• Basically, as concurrency was still climbing, the grid more or less collapsed, cutting the peak short, and around 30,000 users or so logged off in frustration, crashed or were disconnected. The grid had already suffered from assorted transaction problems earlier in the day. Additionally telephone support had troubles of its own.

• The Grid Stability Index for the day was 1.08 (lower is better).
• Uncharacteristically high overnight concurrency minimums for Saturday, just as last week, though at peak loads the grid didn't seem to perform quite as terribly as it did the previous week. This is not to say the grid was free of problems. Transactions again became problematic through much of the afternoon.
• Linden Lab announced the in-world team that is confusingly named the I-World team would have their own sim near the Concierge islands. "I-world" that's got to be about as strong and distinctive a branding proposition as inSL.
• Word from Qarl Linden is that we may be seeing a new Ruth in the near future.
• It looks like both Windlight and Havok-4 will be rolling out everywhere in the early part of the week. There was also an unexpected (probably final) release candidate for Windlight (1.19.2) in the morning.
• Language schooling in Second Life continues to burgeon. Just where are the Klingon classes anyway? Or how about emergency response and firefighting training? That's easier to find.

• At approximately 5AM, strange problems began to take place with the grid. Approximately a half hour later, Linden Lab acknowledged the problems with a notice, and by about 6AM had discovered the cause and temporarily contained the difficulties. Network renumbering of infrastructure equipment took place without delay, as side-effects of that process apparently were to blame. Nonetheless, the grid was still having trouble until well into the afternoon -- with reports of glitches as late as midnight.
• Despite all that, many people were undeterred for the majority of the afternoon and evening.

• Assorted difficulties throughout the day starting shortly after 3AM, many of them looking network related - from asset difficulties to batches of simulators being off the air (even after the problem with this was supposed to have been resolved), and data-loss later in the day (more network problems).
• Server code updates have been aborted due to some unspecified problem, after a late start due to a previously unidentified bug. All affected regions (497) were rolled back. The update is presently on hold pending further investigation and fixes. Havok-4 Early Adopter sims apparently got a working update, however.

• Professor Juan Cole weighed in on the monitoring and profiling of MMO users by government agencies, pointing out that it is essentially impractical (which we already knew), and that it is unconstitutional (which we strongly suspected).
• The Havok Early Adopters were updated with the first release candidate of the new physics system build. There was also a beta refresh in the early hours of the morning, on the beta grid.
• Linden Lab found an issue with parcel joins that was, basically, screwing up search rankings in many cases. A solution for this has been implemented for future parcel joins.
• Sarah Robbins (known in SL as Intellagirl Tully) has been appointed editor of the newly formed SLED (Second Life Education) blog.

• The Grid Stability Index for the day was 1.26 (lower is better).
• 2,000 simulators were updated to a new software version at 5AM. By evening, however, many users were reporting noticeable performance reduction in the upgraded sims - a reduction that was unusually consistent.
• Cisco Systems let us know that they're launching their new Quantum flow processor in Second Life on Tuesday morning.
• Sky News/Five News is reporting a new sexual ageplay scandal. The Wonderland Scandal is already taken. We're taking suggestions for names for this one.
• Linden Lab is hiring an Australian ops engineer.
• Massachusetts General Hospital will be looking for volunteers for a clinical trial on the potential stress-reduction benefits of Second Life.
• There's something interesting going on in the relationship between signups and concurrency. We've been investigating this for some time, and have some findings.

• The grid suffered from slow asset and transaction services throughout the day, which appears to have discouraged logins to some degree. Through the latter part of the afternoon this became more severe, apparently encouraging the early logout of many users.

• Linden Lab announced a serious potential exploit in Thursday's new viewer and rushed out a new version, locking the problematic 1.19.0(4) out of the grid.
• Circuit City relaunched in Second Life, vastly increasing their commitment in the synthetic world, and giving away iPods.
• RealXtend announced the release of version 0.2 of their software, featuring avatar portability.
• Database issues impacted searching for users, and displaying transaction histories. These problems apparently coincided with login difficulties and asset troubles.

• At approximately 11:30PM the group chat servers were restarted to correct some bugs, but little disruption apparently resulted from the switch.
• Live chat through the Support Portal was problematic through much of the day.
• Approximately 2,000 regions were updated with software to support 1.19.1 - so far with better results.
• The Second Life website had troubles of its own.
• Apart from all that, and a few asset server glitches and third-party Internet problems that are causing login difficulties for many users, things were quite smooth.
• The 1.19.0 release candidate was released as the official viewer.

• Linden Lab advises that vendor maintenance will prevent any credit-card processing on Saturday afternoon.
