Massively has been covering Star Trek Online extensively, and we've complied a guide for all the WoW players out there looking to get into the game. So, you're a big fan of World of Warcraft (or at least you were at one time) and you've heard about this new MMO called Aion. "Hmmm, I wonder what that's all about?" you ponder. "Anything similar?" you posit. "What's so different?" Well, we've written a WoW player's guide to Aion just for you! Sit back with a cup o' joe, while we compare and contrast the two MMOs for you.

Races/factions

There are three factions in Aion: Elyos of Elysea, Asmodians of Asmodae, and Balaur of the Abyss. All three continents are contained in the world of Atreia, connected by the Tower of Eternity, and overlooked upon by Aion (aka God). The Elyos and Asmodians are playable races. The former is a bit lighter and the latter is darker, though neither side is truly evil. Balaur are the dark ones; an NPC race of dragon-like demons bent on the domination of Atreia.

At Massively, we like to focus on making more MMOs accessible to more people. That accessibility to other MMOs is initially started by the 800 lb gorilla: World of Warcraft. Without WoW, a large percentage of MMO players would not be enjoying their current game today, even if they haven't stuck by WoW this whole time.

So using the fact that so many people know WoW, we're continuing our WoW Player's Guide series with this one for Fallen Earth. I'm just going to get this out of the way right now: Fallen Earth is nothing like World of Warcraft. There. That's done, so now we can move on. However, the purpose of this guide is not to grade comparable features, but to show the average WoW player what they may seek in a game like Fallen Earth. That transition can be quite a scary leap, so we're here to offer a helping hand. Oh boy, what have I gotten myself into? Comparing one of the largest and most popular MMOs with the current fastest-growing MMO? Do I have a deathwish? Well, it turns out World of Warcraft and Free Realms actually do have a few things in common, but a straight comparison isn't the point of this article. We at Massively have decided to compile a guide for World of Warcraft players who may be interested in checking out what Free Realms has to offer. Even better, for those WoW players out there with children, this guide could be valuable for some alternatives to your usual family gaming choices.

Whether or not you see many similarities between Blizzard's epically popular title and Mythic's Warhammer Online, the reality is that World of Warcraft players are going to feel very comfortable in the brand-new game. Much of the framework that has made the world of Azeroth so successful over the last four years is in full force within Warhammer. Questing as a central component to leveling, an intuitive user interface, and combat very much like that found in Warcraft are all going to be great handrails to incoming players.

There are plenty of MMO players (rightly) curious about what kind of game Mythic has created for them. For the curious Azerothian citizen, despite the familiar handholds, there are a number of big differences and additional features you're just not going to have experience with. Warhammer's a brand new world, with a lot of different sights, cultures, and expectations. Guild Wars and World of Warcraft have been peacefully co-existing for several years now. Considering the fact that the Guild Wars development team over at ArenaNet is made up of ex-Blizzard folks, you're bound to see some similarities between the games. Or, as is more accurately the case, you'll see some vast differences between the games, as ArenaNet's Jeff Strain and Mike O'Brien set out to make an experience that is unlike any they've worked on at Blizzard.

World of Warcraft has brought thousands, millions of players to the MMO genre that may never have tried it before. Despite that, It's become increasingly obvious over the years that WoW players are not necessarily "MMO players." Even though they enjoy the style of gameplay, many of that millions-strong army only play World of Warcraft. When they want a break they go off to play completely different types of games. At Massively we try to love all of our MMO friends equally, so we'd like to introduce you World of Warcraft players to a brand new experience: Age of Conan.
