This week I'm actually going to detour slightly from the game and instead feature one of my favorite hacks for playing DC Universe Online. Well, OK, not a hack -- more like a fun project for the nerdily inclined. Part of the reason I've decided to detour is an email I received earlier this week from Rusty, who asked: "I am very interested in trying the controller on my PC and would welcome your opinion on the best way to accomplish this. I'm leery of downloading software to make this happen. Would you mind sharing your experience?"

As such, this week I'm dedicating my column to helping my fellow PC fiends get their controller on in DC Universe Online. Depending on your personal level of hardware nerditry, your extant pieces/parts, and your budget, this can range from incredibly inexpensive on up to ridiculously awesome. Hungry for more? Join me after the break!
Continue reading Alter-Ego: Using a controller with DC Universe Online on PC

Alter-Ego: Using a controller with DC Universe Online on PC originally appeared on Massively on Sat, 05 Feb 2011 14:00:00 EST. This is going to happen with this winter's Dominion expansion when players will need Windows XP Service Pack 2 to run the EVE client. The game will be getting a graphics update that includes a new look for some of EVE's planets and the Chromium powered in-game browser will require that XP users step up to at least Service Pack 2.

No hardware system requirement increases have been announced, just the need for players to update to Service Pack 2. This will only affect 0.4% of the game's Windows XP users, according to EVE dev CCP Explorer in his latest dev blog. CCP Games will also officially begin supporting Windows 7 with Dominion.
EVE minimum system requirements raised for Dominion expansion originally appeared on Massively on Thu, 24 Sep 2009 18:30:00 EST. CCP is on the verge of earning the title of having the worst expansion launch in the history of the genre. An echelon of EVE players who downloaded and patched EVE Trinity's premium client from the classic client are reporting serious debilitating computer issues as a result from the patch after rebooting. The premium patch deleted an important file needed to boot! While I would love to rip CCP a new one over this, the more pressing matter is to post a fix and help spread the word. The premium patch client was already taken down, but there are players who already patched, still in the game that are in for a rude-awakening when they reboot their computers. EVE players who already downloaded the premium patch client, upgrading from the classic client and are using Windows XP will need to take the necessary measures to repair their boot.ini file. The boot.ini overwrite does not affect Vista users.

If you are using the classic client, or installed the premium client via the full client download you are not affected.

If you upgraded from the classic client to the premium client, using the content upgrade via the patcher, or the stand alone patch may need to take the necessary precautions to ensure your computer's stability.
