This week I'm actually going to detour slightly from the game and instead feature one of my favorite hacks for playing <a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a>. Well, OK, not a hack -- more like a fun project for the nerdily inclined. Part of the reason I've decided to detour is an email I received earlier this week from Rusty, who asked: "<em>I am very interested in trying the controller on my PC and would welcome your opinion on the best way to accomplish this. I'm leery of downloading software to make this happen. Would you mind sharing your experience?</em>" <br />
<br />
As such, this week I'm dedicating my column to helping my fellow PC fiends get their controller on in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/DC-Universe-Online/">DC Universe Online</a></em>. Depending on your personal level of hardware nerditry, your extant pieces/parts, and your budget, this can range from incredibly inexpensive on up to ridiculously awesome. Hungry for more? Join me after the break!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/05/alter-ego-using-a-controller-with-dc-universe-online-on-pc/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Alter-Ego: Using a controller with DC Universe Online on PC</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/05/alter-ego-using-a-controller-with-dc-universe-online-on-pc/">Alter-Ego: Using a controller with DC Universe Online on PC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 05 Feb 2011 14:00:00 EST. </a><a href="http://www.ryzom.com/en/"><em>Ryzom</em></a> might be a five-year-old game, but despite the few hiccups it went through, it remains an attractive and diverse game with a number of features still not widely found in the genre. Having celebrated its anniversary earlier this year, the game continues to roll along at a steady clip, exemplified by the <a href="http://forums.ryzom.com/showthread.php?t=34685">newly-released patch 1.7</a>. The patch's title, The Kitin's Lair, alludes to one of its central elements: a new zone, the first part of the aforementioned lair. Kitins are one of the game's central adversaries, and so the patch's warning to avoid entering the lair alone is no doubt well-advised.<br />
<br />
That's hardly the only feature in the latest patch, however -- the game has also added an overhauled mail system, in-game forums for roleplaying and guilds, and the ability to enter viewable character biographies built in to the game's engine. The game has also adjusted the level display system, now using numbers to indicate the target's level only when it is close to that of the player. The addition of official <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7">Windows 7</a> support makes <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Ryzom/">Ryzom</a></em> more accessible, so the game's players would do well to <a href="http://forums.ryzom.com/showthread.php?t=34685">take note of what the patch brings</a>, and those of you who've never heard of the game may want to give it a fresh look.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/17/ryzom-launches-1-7-patch/">Ryzom launches 1.7 patch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 17 Dec 2009 16:00:00 EST. When I decided to come back and check out <em><a href="http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/index.shtml">Final Fantasy XI</a></em>, I'm fairly certain that I was in the small minority of people returning in that moment. With <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Funcom">Funcom</a> offering previous subscribers <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/08/age-of-conan-offering-two-free-weeks-to-previous-players/">a chance to take a second look</a> at <em><a href="http://community.ageofconan.com/wsp/conan/frontend.cgi?func=frontend.show&amp;template=main">Age of Conan</a></em>, I somehow doubt I'll be in a minority this time around.<br /><br />So here we are, coming back to the digital realm of Hyboria just past a year since everyone first ventured into its lush and deadly landscapes. What will I find? What will I think? These are just a few of the many questions that go through my mind as I boot up the game for the first time in a while.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/13/the-digital-continuum-reentering-the-age-of-conan/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Digital Continuum: Reentering the Age of Conan</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/13/the-digital-continuum-reentering-the-age-of-conan/">The Digital Continuum: Reentering the Age of Conan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 13 Jul 2009 12:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic/">Cryptic</a> today <a href="http://www.champions-online.com/node/88150">revealed the minimum and recommended specs</a> for <a href="http://www.champions-online.com" style="font-style: italic;">Champions Online</a> and they contain some happy and interesting surprises. Happy, because the overall requirements are fairly low, especially if you're the kind of person who plays MMOs on any sort of regular basis. Interesting, because for a game coming out a little under two months before Windows 7 hits retail, there's strangely no mention of support for the new Microsoft operating system.<br /><br />We know that the current beta runs on Windows 7, but that's true of many older games released in the Vista era. Given <a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=search-alias%3Daps&amp;field-keywords=Windows+7&amp;x=0&amp;y=0">the low upgrade prices</a> currently being offered and the positive buzz surrounding the new OS, there'll probably be a decent amount of early adopters come October 22nd. Still, beyond that small curiosity, we'd have to say the required and recommended specs for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Champions-Online/" style="font-style: italic;">Champions Online</a> are definitely good. As an added bonus, this makes another delay beyond September highly unlikely -- <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/26/champions-online-open-beta-coming-in-august/">as does the announced open beta</a>, we <span style="font-style: italic;">suppose</span>.<br /><br />Check out the minimum and recommended system requirements after the break.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/07/system-requirements-revealed-for-champions-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>System requirements revealed for Champions Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/07/system-requirements-revealed-for-champions-online/">System requirements revealed for Champions Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 07 Jul 2009 10:00:00 EST.
