We all know that know that story is the fourth pillar for The Old Republic. We also know BioWare has the reputation for having some of the most compelling stories in the gaming industry. In fact, story is written into its mission statement: "BioWare's vision is to deliver the best story-driven games in the world." So it is no surprise at all that when the team came to Comic-Con this past weekend, it consisted of mostly writers.

Massively's Dan O'Halloran nabbed the Managing Editor on SWTOR, Alexander Freed, for a conversation. Freed has scribed much of the story and dialogue for this epic MMO, as well as been the writer for the exciting adventures of Teneb Kel in The Blood of the Empire webcomic.

Continue on after the break to catch Alexander Freed's insight into what the different types of quests will be available in SWTOR, what compelling choices players have to make, and what it takes to write for a project of this magnitude.
Continue reading SDCC 2010: A SWTOR Managing Editor who doesn't solve problems by killing all the kittens

SDCC 2010: A SWTOR Managing Editor who doesn't solve problems by killing all the kittens originally appeared on Massively on Mon, 26 Jul 2010 11:00:00 EST. With Comic*Con less than a week away, BioWare is passionately preparing for the stellar event. And to tease us into wanting more, the development team threw us a gigantic Fan Friday for Star Wars: The Old Republic. What secrets were revealed in the newest issue of the Blood of the Empire? What can be divulged in a Developer's Blog about audio? How do we discover this secret the SWTOR Community Manager wants to tell us? And music in an MMO? Is that important? The Developer's Dispatch wants to show us.

All of these and other important questions will be answered if you click the little "Read more" button below.
Continue reading Music, audio, webcomics and more: It is super-reveal Friday for SWTOR's fans

Music, audio, webcomics and more: It is super-reveal Friday for SWTOR's fans originally appeared on Massively on Fri, 16 Jul 2010 13:30:00 EST. Star Wars: The Old Republic has done it again! The fourth installment of The Blood of the Empire has us itching for more, and asking more questions. Will Teneb Kel find his mark? How did Exal Kressh betray the Empire?

This dialog-heavy issue introduces us to two new characters, an unnamed Jedi Master and his apprentice. The Jedi pair face the dilemma of trusting a Sith woman, Kressh, who (we found out last issue) was the apprentice to the Emperor himself. According to the Jedi Master, they are "staking a lot on this mystery woman" and the Jedi council has given them one chance to discern her intentions. On the Sith side, Teneb Kel pits off against a gangster-baron of the orbiting Lenico IV colonies, Ybann the Hutt. Should Kel trust the slug when told that Kressh has left? Should he trust his companion, named Maggot, when pressed to tell the one-eyed alien who Kressh is?

You will notice a wrap around the Jedi Master's eyes. This wrap is similar to those worn by other Jedi such as Q'Anilia, Jerec, and the famous KOTOR 2 character, Visas Marr. This could be a hint that he is a Miraluka, but the greater question remains: Is Miraluka a possible playable race? Perhaps this will be one of the questions answered at E3.
SWTOR teases with the next Blood of the Empire webcomic installment originally appeared on Massively on Fri, 04 Jun 2010 17:00:00 EST.
Today marks the 30th anniversary of the release of the Empire Strikes Back. Just as in that monumental movie, the newly-revealed Emperor gives deadly instructions to his kneeling servant in Star Wars: The Old Republic's issue #3 of Blood of the Empire.

Bioware's ingenious marketing campaign of webcomics drags us to the edge of our seats again. The issue begins explosively as Sith Warrior Teneb Kel faces off against his former Master, one he claimed to love as a father. This frantic and fear-filled lightsaber duel is cut short by the Sith Council just before Kel removes his Master's head, although this does not end Kel's trials for the day. A white-robed Emperor awaits with a final test: Exal Kressh. You may recall her in the last issue as the "pure blood" Sith. Her connection to Kel is yet to be revealed, but there is no mistaking the shock on his face when the yellow-eyed Emperor asks him to kill her.

The pacing and art of this whole comic captures the audience much better than the Threat of Peace, but information just is not being revealed fast enough for the fans. To judge for yourself check out this week's edition.

SWTOR reveals the Emperor in webcomic originally appeared on Massively on Fri, 21 May 2010 14:30:00 EST. And so the plot thickens, as the identity of the man attempting to dissolve the peace treaty between the Republic and the Empire is now closer to being revealed. Yes, this week BioWare continues their free online comic Threat of Peace with issue number 20, which largely focuses on the Bounty Hunter known as Braden.

The developer's propensity for seeding hints at future in-game content through this series continues, and in that statement we mean to say Nar Shadda is most likely going to be a playable planet in Star Wars: The Old Republic. We also wouldn't be surprised to see Dantooine become an in-game destination as well, since it's both a classic location and apparently the future site of some intrigue for Threat of Peace readers.

We suppose it'd be easy enough to assume most planets featured from the movies and previous KOTOR games will end up in Star Wars: The Old Republic. Nonetheless, it's fun to play the guessing game when it comes to a highly anticipated MMO. We're hoping the next official planet announcement goes to Nar Shadda, as it's just such a lovely place to visit.
Everybody loves a good cantina fight in Threat of Peace, issue #20 originally appeared on Massively on Fri, 20 Nov 2009 23:00:00 EST.
With the convention craze of the summer - E3 into San Diego ComicCon and then PAX, the news for Star Wars: The Old Republic has been crazy hot and heavy. Meanwhile, the co-operative webcomic between BioWare, LucasArts and Dark Horse Comics have been coming out steadily, overshadowed by their shinier brethren.

As a bit of a breather, the team at BioWare have focused for the last couple of weeks exclusively on the comic - we're sure to allow the story to shine on its own. It was a niche game, but the idea of playing a video game inside a computer world is still a nifty hall of mirrors. Personally I hope the new TRON movie revitalizes the franchise and puts an MMO on the table. I sure would like to take on the Master Control Program myself someday.

Have a funny story of your own? The eleventh issue for Star Wars: The Old Republics' ongoing free webcomic Threat of Peace is out now, and full of Rodian and Jedi strife. Rodians get left out in the cold and hard times have fallen on the Jedi since the Sith Empire came down hard on Coruscant. Unfortunately, their plan of forcing the Republic into a cease fire worked, sorta.

Now the war rages on behind closed doors, through political maneuvers and inside torture sessions. It's bound to become quite grizzly from here on out. But such is the price of peace, and of course it should make for some great storytelling, which is the whole point. Oh and in case you missed it, the latest video showcasing plenty of gameplay and voice work is out as well. It's definitely a good week to be a Star Wars fan. Here's hoping for another class reveal soon!
The price of peace in SWTOR's latest Threat of Peace webcomic originally appeared on Massively on Mon, 20 Jul 2009 09:00:00 EST. While I think it's neat you'll finally be able to make that Mr. Hyde knockoff you've been waiting to build, Grinders today reflects other possible gameplay options.

On a side note, I wonder what this'll do to the character gender debate. Now in CoH, your character doesn't need to have a gender, just a costume slot does. You could make a character that is in fact five distinct characters. It's about time the MMO scene started seeing some real deviation. Grinders is more than proud to get revved up for Cities XL, and try out some more playstyles than just leather armor and pest control. Though, it'll be really interesting to see what similarities do come out of the game. It'll also make us rethink what an MMO is, because if 'lots of players' and 'online' are the only two sticking points, I don't think that it'll stay a genre of its own for much longer.

Have a funny story of your own? Though, I bet calling it an MMO is really starting to abuse the term, much like Virtual Laguna Beach and Habbo Hotel have caused us to do in the past. This of course means a certain shift in the team populations. Valve's trying something different this time with two class updates instead of just one, but see if that'll really help. Really.

Have a funny story of your own? Ten comics enter, one leaves with a beta key for Star Trek Online. That's the latest contest the folks at Cryptic are running, and they're letting the community vote! The one minor caveat is that you've got to have a forum account to actually place your vote, which is an easily resolved matter.

We kind of wish that the comics had been re-sized a little, as some of them appear to be quite massive in dimensions. Nonetheless, there are some really great Trek-humor entries. Just be careful to go into these knowing that unless you watched a lot -- and enjoyed a lot -- of Star Trek, you probably won't really care too much for the humor. And while the art may not be the best in the world, it's an enjoyable effort by an obviously enthralled community.
Vote for your favorite Star Trek Online comic originally appeared on Massively on Thu, 14 May 2009 09:00:00 EST. When creating an "Awesome Star Wars Meal" make sure you remember to add in a heaping helping of Wookiees, explosions and Bounty Hunters. Do this, and you'll have a winning formula to keep your readers/watchers/players interested in whatever it is you may be planning for their entertainment future.

Of course, make sure that you deliver on this stew with a main course that really packs of satisfying punch. You wouldn't want the rapid anger of a Star Wars fan to leap onto and assault your body in a fit of moist, fisty rage. Most, if not all of these cases do not end well, and require severe levels of ultimately fruitless medical attention.

Nobody wants that.

You can find issue five (and it's previous issues, of course) over at the official Star Wars: The Old Republic website. Backwards? Maybe. I can't vouch for the genders of the other featured characters, but I do want to thank them for rallying in Atlas Park to get in the feature. The Sith have strange ways about them; strange but effective means of getting exactly what they want. This is why when Coruscant came under siege by the Sith Empire just as they were beginning peace talks with the Galactic Republic, we had a feeling there was an deeper motive beneath the obvious. It all becomes clear in this week's issue number four of BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic webcomic, Threat of Peace.

Beyond here things should only get more interesting. We're hoping for a timeline update next week along with issue five, because at four pages a pop the cliffhangers can sometimes be a real pain in our geeky butts.
Threat of Peace issue #4, need we say more? originally appeared on Massively on Sat, 11 Apr 2009 20:00:00 EST. Today marks the first installment of the Star Wars: The Old Republic online webcomic series that we first mentioned earlier in the month. This webcomic has been created as a joint venture between BioWare, LucasArts and Dark Horse comics, and offers fans an opportunity to discover the Old Republic era in preparation for the yet-unannounced launch date for the TOR MMO.

In this introductory issue entitled Act 1: Treaty of Coruscant, the Jedi and the Republic maintain control of core worlds while the Sith Empire continues its military victories over critical star systems. The desperate Republic accepts a surprising offer of peace from the Empire, as key members of the Senate, Jedi and Sith Dark Council join together for the terms of their new treaty. Check out the entire comic at the SWTOR website and look for more issues to arrive twice a month.
The Old Republic launches first issue of Dark Horse webcomic originally appeared on Massively on Fri, 27 Feb 2009 10:00:00 EST. It seemed so simple: craft a ten-word story about World of Warcraft and win yourself a huge pile of trading card game loot. The devil is, as is so often the case, in the details. With many hundreds of entrants the competition was quite fierce, and today's unveiling of the top five entries proves out just how fierce.

Like you, a lot of bloggers from the site submitted stories, but we know when we're beaten. How can you top "Overlord Saurfang is only afraid of one thing... Mrs. Saurfang?" Or "Naked they run, level 1 banks: Clark Kents of Azeroth?" I espcially like winner #3's tale: "The gunshot echoed like a ghost with nobody to haunt." Many of the honorable mentions are great too, like "'Small trogg problem in Orgrimmar's basement.' What an understatement, Thrall", or "Tipping his sombrero in salute, he dismounted his mechanical chicken."

We're curious, though: did you enter? If you'd be willing, why don't you share your submission(s) with us in the comments? This blogger volunteers to go first: "The murlocs, their scales glinting, advanced with hungry mouths wide."
Penny Arcade's WoW CCG contest ends, hilariously originally appeared on Massively on Fri, 18 Apr 2008 13:30:00 EST. The Penny Arcade guys do a lot of amazing stuff beyond their incredibly popular three-days-a-week webcomic. The one thing they haven't done -- at least in recent memory -- is a contest that anyone can enter to win a mountain of super cool swag, at least until today. This particular contest consists of three huge mountains of World of Warcraft CCG swag, each of which contains the rare X-51 Nether-Rocket card that also happens to be redeemable in-game for a sweet rocket mount that your WoW character can scoot around on. We're pretty sure that thousands of WoW players are going to be entering this contest solely for said rocket card.

The actual contest itself is most awesome, asking participants only to supply Gabe and Tycho with a ten word story. We've been having fun at Massively by simply coming up with ten word stories for the hell of it -- although we're beginning to think it might be a good idea to enter some of these things. If you'd like to do that same, simply email Gabe with the subject line of "Ten Words" and as many quality ten word stories as you can come up with.
Penny Arcade WoW CCG contest originally appeared on Massively on Fri, 04 Apr 2008 17:30:00 EST. How is this a Massively concern? The final panel takes a shot at both Sony's Home and Second Life.

Warning: this comic is NSFW in both image and text!
