For those curious about the fate of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-40k/"><em>Warhammer 40K: Dark Millennium Online</em></a>, <a href="http://www.ripten.com/2012/04/10/thq-talks-layoffs-says-they-cant-afford-to-ship-darksiders-ii-and-south-park-until-theyre-perfect/2/">Ripten</a> recently interviewed <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/thq">THQ</a> executive <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/danny-bilson">Danny Bilson</a> regarding the game's future.<br />
<br />
You'll recall that late last month, THQ announced that <em>DMO</em> would shed its MMO skin and reinvent itself as a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/29/war40k-devs-laid-off-game-will-no-longer-be-an-mmo/">single-player title</a>. Bilson says that much of what makes the game unique will remain intact, and most importantly, <em>WAR40K</em> "is still sitting with the people who invented it five years ago, and honestly, they are incredibly excited about the new direction."<br />
<br />
While you wouldn't expect anything less than positive spin from a bigwig whose company has seen better days, the interview still manages to make the new title sound pretty intriguing. "If you liked <em>Space Marine</em>, you're gonna love this thing. It's much deeper. <em>Space Marine</em> was designed as a console experience. This one has tremendous multiplayer gameplay, and there is a lot going on in this game that's spectacular," Bilson says.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/11/thq-executive-explains-war40ks-new-direction/">THQ executive explains WAR40K's new non-MMO direction</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 11 Apr 2012 11:00:00 EST. This week on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/The-MMO-Repor/">The MMO Report</a>, Casey tells everyone to stop whining about <em>Mass Effect 3's</em> ending, laments the loss of the "online" part of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-40k/">Warhammer 40K: Dark Millennium Online</a></em>, touches on the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/World-of-Darkness/">World of Darkness</a></em> keynote, and outlines <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/The-Secret-World/">The Secret World's</a></em> preorder plans. He also reveals the identity of one of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/TERA/">TERA's</a></em> key voice actors: Michael Hogan (of Battlestar Galactica fame), who will play Samael in the final game. Finally, he pulls one measly letter from the mailbag and debates which class he represents in <em>TERA</em>.<br />

The on-again off-again saga of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-40k/"><em>Warhammer 40K</em></a> is apparently off again, at least in regard to the title's future as an MMORPG. In early February we reported on some rumored <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/thq">THQ</a> financial trouble, but the company later <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/02/thq-still-planning-on-war40k-launch-in-fiscal-2014/">pooh-poohed the concerns</a> and said that <em>WAR40K</em> was still on track.<br />
<br />
Today, though, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/29/warhammer-40-000-dark-millennium-mmo-now-single-player-game-10/">our sister site reports</a> that <em>Dark Millennium Online</em> will axe the online portion of its lengthy moniker and the company will be producing the title as a single-player game going forward. A substantial number of jobs have also been cut, with 79 <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/vigil-games">Vigil Games</a> employees and 39 <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/relic-entertainment">Relic Entertainment</a> employees receiving pink slips.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/29/war40k-devs-laid-off-game-will-no-longer-be-an-mmo/">WAR40K devs laid off, game will no longer be an MMO</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 29 Mar 2012 15:00:00 EST. It seems as if the recent brouhaha over <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/thq">THQ's</a> future was a bit overblown, as were concerns about the fate of the firm's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-40k/"><em>Warhammer 40K: Dark Millennium Online</em></a> MMO. Our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/02/thq-lists-warhammer-mmo-for-fiscal-2014-has-multiple-unannounce/">sister site reports</a> that <em>DMO</em> is on track for "fiscal 2014 and beyond" based on a THQ earnings report released today.<br />

We consulted our corporate-speak decoder rings and determined that fiscal 2014 translates to April 2013, which puts the launch window slightly behind the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/13/warhammer-40k-dark-millennium-mmo-coming-march-13-2013/">original target date</a>, according to Joystiq.<br />
<br />
Last month THQ <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/15/rumor-war40k-canceled-thq-readying-itself-for-sale/">debunked a rumor</a> tweeted by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/kevin-dent">Kevin Dent</a> that had the firm canceling its entire 2014 catalog and prepping for a firesale.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.gamespot.com/news/thq-looking-for-help-with-warhammer-40k-mmo-6349698">Gamespot</a>, meanwhile, is reporting that THQ is actively seeking publishing partners for the game.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/02/thq-still-planning-on-war40k-launch-in-fiscal-2014/">THQ still planning on WAR40K launch in fiscal 2014</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 02 Feb 2012 19:00:00 EST. Why does <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/The-MMO-Report/">The MMO Report</a> cover <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Minecraft/">Minecraft</a></em>? "Shut up, that's why," says Casey with a smile. In addition to chronicling <em>Minecraft's</em> newest <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/FarmVille/">FarmVille</a></em>-esque update, the Beard meanders through the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Dark-Millennium-Online/">Dark Millennium Online</a></em> cancellation rumors, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/The-Secret-World/">The Secret World's</a></em> Illuminati trailer, and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/TERA/">TERA's</a></em> upcoming May release date ("your cue to start claiming it's better than <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/World-of-warcraft">WoW</a></em>, internet"). Finally, Casey touches on the patch delays suffered by <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Wars-The-Old-Republic/">Star Wars: The Old Republic</a></em>, excusing the tardiness by suggesting the promised dates are more like guidelines, and besides, "Only a Sith deals in absolutes."<br />
<br />
All this and a quick dip into Uncle Casey's Mailbag can be found in the full HD video behind the cut.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/19/the-mmo-report-shut-up-thats-why-edition/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The MMO Report: Shut up, that's why edition</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/19/the-mmo-report-shut-up-thats-why-edition/">The MMO Report: Shut up, that's why edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 19 Jan 2012 20:00:00 EST. While I'm on board the <a href="http://www.swtor.com/"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> train (at least until <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">SOE's</a> <em>Star Wars: The New Republic</em> comes out in 2014 and forces <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>SWTOR</em></a> to shut down), I can certainly sympathize with the frustration that non-fans are feeling right about now. There are few things more annoying than not being into the latest craze -- or hating it outright -- and yet being unable to escape it.<br />
<br />
So I'm here to say to you today that, like <a href="http://us.battle.net/wow/en/"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a>, <em>SWTOR </em>isn't the be-all, end-all of the MMO field. It's a part of it, but just one part, and there are many, many others in the works as we speak. Mama always told me never to put all your eggs in one basket anyway, so I'm spreading my eggcitement across many cyber-nests.<br />
<br />
This is the bone I'm throwing to all of you this week: a list of 10 Midichlorian-free MMOs that have me -- and should have you -- extremely buzzed about their development. In putting together this list, I realized that there are so many promising prospects that I divided them into two groups. This week I'm presenting the strongest contenders that should make it to launch with a solid product, while next time I'll list promising prospects that may be more of a long shot. I'm 47% confident that I will not forget your most-anticipated title.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/01/the-perfect-ten-the-upcoming-contenders/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Perfect Ten: The upcoming contenders</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/01/the-perfect-ten-the-upcoming-contenders/">The Perfect Ten: The upcoming contenders</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 01 Dec 2011 16:00:00 EST. I've written about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ufo-online/"><em>UFO Online</em></a> before. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/09/e3-2011-gamigo-goes-turn-based-with-ufo-online-and-jagged-allia/">It should be obvious</a> how much I am looking forward to this new browser-based, turn-based strategy combat game. When I got to sit down with representatives from publisher <a href="http://www.gamigo.com/">gamigo</a> at <a href="http://www.e3expo.com/">E3</a> earlier this year, I felt that familiar old feeling that I used to get when shopping for tabletop gaming miniatures. There's something about controlling a squad of little dudes with guns, something that seems to resonate with my generation.<br />
<br />
Well, the board game has gone digital, and now we do not have to drive for miles and miles to get to the closest gaming shop and wade through six feet of nerddom just to hope that we aren't teamed up with players who really give the hobby a stereotypical bad name. Now we can digitally join up with fellow game geeks and have it out across worlds that fit in our browser.<br />
<br />
I was able to take a bit of a tour through <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/browser/"><em>UFO Online</em></a> over the last week. So what did I find? Click past the cut and I'll let you know.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/20/first-impressions-ufo-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>First Impressions: UFO Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/20/first-impressions-ufo-online/">First Impressions: UFO Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 20 Nov 2011 16:00:00 EST. Welcome to another super-exciting edition of <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/twimmo">This Week in MMO</a>. On this episode, host <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/gary-gannon">Gary Gannon</a> and a pair of Mikes have a bit of fun with the announcement that <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/bigpoint-games">Bigpoint</a> will be taking the helm of an MMO based on the super-trendy A Game of Thrones. Meanwhile, is <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/category/wildstar">WildStar</a></em> a theme-park or a sandbox? Well, we don't know, but the TWIMMO guys have a bit to say on the matter. <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/dc-universe-online"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> gets a wild playerbase boost after its transition to free-to-play, and speculation abounds as to whether the upcoming <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/warhammer-40k"><em>Warhammer 40: Dark Millenium Online</em></a> MMO could be free to play.<br />

Mass conspiracy? Over-eager fans? Or deliberate misinformation? No matter what the case, it turns out that recent information about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-40k/"><em>Warhammer 40K: Dark Millennium Online</em></a> was not passed down by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/thq/">THQ</a> itself, and these "facts," such as the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/12/warhammer-40k-dark-millennium-online-launch-date-revealed/">launch date</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/13/thq-releases-flood-of-new-details-for-warhammer-40k-dark-millen/">class list</a>, should be treated as speculative rumors and nothing more.<br />
<br />
THQ sent a letter to several media outlets clarifying the situation:
<blockquote class="bq-standard">
	It has come to THQ's attention that some media are reporting that we've announced game details and a release date for our upcoming massively multiplayer online project, <em>Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium Online</em>. At this time THQ has not officially announced a release date and any reported features are pure speculation. THQ will announce confirmed game features and an official release date at a later time.</blockquote>
We will keep an eye on this title and the news coming out of THQ as it develops.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/13/thq-says-war40k-release-date-features-list-is-pure-speculation/">THQ says WAR40K release date, features list is 'pure speculation'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 13 Oct 2011 22:30:00 EST. If you've been waiting for the upcoming Warhammer 40k MMO <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-40k/">Dark Millennium Online</a></em>, you may have checked out recent single-player title <em><a href="http://www.spacemarine.com/">Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine</a></em>. In <a href="http://www.shacknews.com/article/70606/space-marine-sequel-dark-millennium-online-creative-overlap">an interview on the two games with Shacknews last night</a>, THQ's VP of Core Games <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/danny-bilson">Danny Bilson</a> described a potential conflict of interest between the upcoming MMO and any potential Space Marine sequel. When asked whether the single-player title deserved a sequel, Bilson described an interesting creative overlap between the game and its upcoming MMO counterpart.<br />
<br />
Revealing that the MMO would contain more action-based gameplay than the MMO norm, Bilson painted a picture of <em>Dark Millennium Online</em> as an online spiritual successor to <em>Space Marine</em> but with the other 40k factions similarly explored. "It may be that the next iteration of <em>Space Marine</em> is a much bigger universe, where if you love Space Marines you can play that way," he told Shacknews, adding that "there was a creative overlap going on with <em>Dark Millennium Online</em>'s development" and "there's not room in the world for that overlap."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/13/dark-millennium-online-has-conflict-of-interest-with-potential-s/">Dark Millennium Online has conflict of interest with potential Space Marine sequel</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 13 Oct 2011 19:30:00 EST. If you're a fan of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-40k/"><em>Warhammer 40K: Dark Millennium Online</em></a>, you are likely pretty happy to have a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/12/warhammer-40k-dark-millennium-online-launch-date-revealed/">launch date</a>. You're also probably anxious for details about the game itself, which have been in short supply until now.<br />
<br />
We've got good news for you though: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/thq">THQ</a> has released a huge list of data on design, gameplay, classes and races, and much more. The information ranges from all-encompassing, such as talk of art style and who is involved in development, to very specific, such as a party size of five, raid size of 50, and level cap of 60.<br />
<br />
There's plenty more for eager fans: dual-wielding pistols and melee weapons (including chain swords), classes with three specialties, a crashed space hulk ripe for exploration, and much more. Strategy Informer has the complete summary, so head over there for your full <em>Warhammer 40K: Dark Millennium Online</em> fix!<br />

I think we're all allowed our moments of pure geek squeeing when we bump into the people responsible for some of our favorite video games of yesteryear. So I had to apologize to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tramell-isaac/">Tramell Isaac</a> in advance for gushing over his work on the first two <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/fallout/"><em>Fallout</em></a> titles, games that are among my all-time favorites. He didn't seem to mind, and he spent a few minutes shooting the breeze about his favorite designs in the game -- designing Robobrain and the Vault Boy cards that accompanied the player perks.<br />
<br />
MMO fans will probably best know Isaac from his work on the original <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/planetside/"><em>PlanetSide</em></a>, a project that is near and dear to his heart. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">Sony Online Entertainment</a> brought him back on board to be the senior art director for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/planetside-2/"><em>PlanetSide 2</em></a>. This makes sense -- after all, who else would best know how to evolve the series' design than the guy who started it?<br />
<br />

While <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2011/">last week's E3</a> is still fresh in our minds and hearts, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/thq/">THQ</a> is giving us a great reason to look forward to next year's expo: the chance to get our hands on <em><a href="http://www.darkmillenniumonline.com/">Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium Online</a>.</em><br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-06-16-warhammer-40k-mmo-playable-next-year">Eurogamer reports</a> that THQ is committing to this time frame. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Danny-Bilson/">Danny Bilson</a> says that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-40k/"><em>WAR40K</em></a> will be the highlight of the company's display: <em>"Next year, I promise you, next E3. I've already got plans for what the booth is like. The centrepiece of the booth will be that MMO."</em><br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/07/e3-2011-new-dark-millennium-online-teaser-sighted-in-the-wild/">We caught only a glimpse of a teaser trailer</a> for the game at this year's E3. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/vigil-games/">Vigil Games</a> is hard at work on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/10/thq-spending-approximately-50-million-on-war40k-mmo/">the $50+ million project</a>, and Bilson says that it's looking good and on track for a launch between April 2012 and March 2013.<br />
<br />
<em>"It looks fabulous. I like it. I can't speak to it now, or people will kill me. But, I'll tell you what, it plays differently. A little bit... This thing is gonna be special,"</em> he said. <em>"We're going to come out when we come out in a big way. I feel like we're fully competitive with the other guys. It'll be seven years in the making when it comes out. We're competing with the best games in the world. You can't mess around with this thing." </em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/16/dark-millennium-online-to-be-playable-at-e3-2012/">Dark Millennium Online to be playable at E3 2012</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 16 Jun 2011 09:00:00 EST. The first <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2011">E3</a> tidbit on <a href="http://thq.com/">THQ's</a> <a href="http://www.darkmillenniumonline.com/"><em>Warhammer 40K: Dark Millennium Online</em></a> is officially loose on the interwebs, and it takes the form of a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpJdFT-J82E&amp;feature=player_embedded">short teaser video</a>. When we say short, we mean <em>short</em> (as in, less than a minute in length -- 10 seconds of which are given over to company logos). Since the footage is heavily stylized, it's hard to tell exactly what is gameplay and what is cinematic.<br />
<br />
In any event, it all looks pretty cool, and fans looking forward to <a href="http://www.vigilgames.com/">Vigil's</a> take on the dark and dystopian far-future setting will be left wanting a bit more. The video also plays it coy when it comes to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-40k/"><em>WAR40K's</em></a> release date, opting for a cryptic "coming soon" tag when all the pyrotechnics have died down. Have a look after the cut and let us know what you think.<br />
<br />
[Thanks to Alluvian for the tip!]<br />

If you're wondering how many users it's going to take for <a href="http://thq.com">THQ's</a> forthcoming <a href="http://www.darkmillenniumonline.com/"><em>Warhammer 40K</em></a>-based sci-fi MMORPG to be successful, you can keep wondering. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/thq">THQ</a> executive vice president and chief financial officer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/paul-pucino">Paul Pucino</a> did speak briefly about the budget of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-40k/">Dark Millennium Online</a></em>, however, while addressing a Wedbush Morgan conference on March 9th. Pucino said the title will cost "<em>somewhere in the area of $50 million or so to get these games to market, certainly in that range for </em>Dark Millennium."<br />
<br />
Pucino was asked about desired subscriber numbers for <em>WAR40K</em>, which is being developed by <a href="http://www.vigilgames.com/">Vigil Games</a>, but declined to offer any details. "<em>We haven't gotten specific yet, we're a couple of years away here from release and certainly as we get closer we'll give some specifics with regards to break-even or target users</em>," he said.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/10/thq-spending-approximately-50-million-on-war40k-mmo/">THQ spending approximately $50 million on WAR40K MMO</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 10 Mar 2011 11:00:00 EST. It looks like March 2013 is the latest expected delivery date for <a href="http://thq.com">THQ's</a> <a href="http://www.darkmillenniumonline.com/"><em>Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium Online</em></a> MMORPG. <a href="http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/02/03/thq-says-40k-mmo-due-by-march-31-2013/">Rock, Paper Shotgun</a> reports that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/thq">THQ</a> <a href="http://investor.thq.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=96376&amp;p=irol-IRHome">told its investors</a> the sci-fi opus should see the light of day in the fiscal year 2013, a period stretching from April 2012 to March 2013.<br />
<br />
While news of the far-future setting has excited some fans, others are put off by rumors that the extensive faction roster from the source material is being distilled to a more MMO-palatable pair of <a href="http://war40k.zam.com/story.html?story=23215">opposing organizations</a>. However it turns out, we'll have to wait quite a while it seems and content ourselves with the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/06/war40k-throws-down-the-gauntlet-to-the-competition/">slow</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/27/thq-reveals-the-dark-engine-powering-warhammer-40k/">trickle</a> of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-40k"><em>WAR40K</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/20/new-war40k-trailer-introduces-first-playable-race/">news</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/03/thq-says-war40k-mmo-due-by-march-2013/">THQ says WAR40K MMO due by March 2013</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 03 Feb 2011 11:00:00 EST. Years ago I had to find a job in my new home state of Texas. Luckily for me, my wife hooked me up with a friend who helped me get hired at <a href="http://www.starbucks.com/">Starbucks</a>. At first, I hung my head in shame. Later, though, I enjoyed dealing with customers and the free coffee. I had a co-worker, a real chin-scratching, coffee house wanna-be intellectual who would often spend more time dreaming about some game than about getting people on their breaks. He even brought his Macbook to work to sneak in time in the game. <br />
<br />
I glanced over his shoulder one day and was delighted to see an odd-looking, cartoony, turn-based game on his screen. It turned out that the game was <em><a href="http://www.dofus.com/en">Dofus</a></em>. I tried it immediately and fell in love with it, but that was years ago. I still found time to revisit the game, but once I started working at Massively, most of my time became dedicated to every <em>other</em> game in the world. <br />
<br />
Well, it's time to visit it again. During the first part of this week, though, I thought this was going to be a disaster. I stayed strong and battled my way through bot after bot, spam message after spam message, and eventually found the great game I remember. Click past the cut to see exactly what I found!<br type="_moz" /><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/02/rise-and-shiny-recap-dofus/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rise and Shiny recap: Dofus</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/02/rise-and-shiny-recap-dofus/">Rise and Shiny recap: Dofus</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 02 Jan 2011 14:00:00 EST. Other MMOs are predictable, lazy and lack the real "feel" of combat -- or so says <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/vigil-games/">Vigil Games'</a> founder Dave Adams. <a href="http://www.pcgamer.com/2010/12/04/warhammer-40k-dark-millennium-online-a-grim-dark-future/">In a recent PC Gamer article</a>, Adams and Creative Director Mike Maza share their vision for <a href="http://www.darkmillenniumonline.com/"><em>Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium Online</em></a> -- and it's all about bucking the industry standard.<br />
<br />
Adams had a few strong words for Vigil's competition: <em>"A lot of developers see that as an opportunity to cut that corner because there's so much to do on an MMO. They think people care about X, Y and Z. They don't really care about the feeling of the combat... Our goal is when some guy's walking past </em>DMO <em>they won't instantly know it's an MMO. That depends on a minimal interface: it's not a full FPS but it looks more 'actiony'."</em><br />
<br />
The devs confirmed that there would be a wide range of combat features in this action-based title, including fierce melee brawls, intense ranged firefights -- and no action bar icons of which to speak. The team is working hard to recreate the tabletop's iconic world into a virtual one, designing guns (stubber and bolter firearms) and player-controlled vehicles (Titan mechs and Predator tanks) to look deadly, used and WAR40Kish.<br />
<br />
The game will kick players into the fight almost immediately. <em>"There's scenarios that introduce you to your character class. We'll throw you into your very first instance, to get a feel for a very player directed experience. Then you'll go to your trainers and merchants, then drop down onto the over-world from orbit,"</em> Maza said.<br />

In honor of this week's big news at the time of this writing, we here at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Ask-Massively/">Ask Massively</a> have decided to reveal to our readers that we are not just repositories of information both useful and esoteric -- we are also <a href="http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0185.html">future psychics</a>. As proof of our powers, we have decided to explain to the world exactly what will happen when <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/cataclysm"><em>Cataclysm</em></a> launches, starting with the fact that it will sell approximately fourteen hojillion copies within five minutes, thus breaking sales records previously set by the exact same game.<br />
<br />
Two days out from release, an uberguild will have cleared every ounce of available content and will be asking why <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Blizzard/">Blizzard</a> is dragging its heels on the next raid. Three days out will mark the Running of the Wolves, as the Alliance areas are swarmed with worgen of every conceivable hue. Four days out, we'll be in full-on meme status for at least one boss.<br />
<br />
But for today, we have questions about <a href="http://www.vigilgames.com/dmo"><em>Warhammer 40,000</em></a> and <a href="http://tfwiki.net">Transformers</a>, but we can always use more. Mail your questions along to <a href="javascript:void(location.href='mailto:'+String.fromCharCode(97,115,107,64,109,97,115,115,105,118,101,108,121,46,99,111,109)+'?')">ask@massively.com</a> or just leave them in the comments!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/07/ask-massively-future-psychics-edition/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Ask Massively: Future psychics edition</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/07/ask-massively-future-psychics-edition/">Ask Massively: Future psychics edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 07 Oct 2010 20:00:00 EST. Hungry for information -- any information at all -- on <a href="http://www.vigilgames.com/">Vigil Games'</a> upcoming <a href="http://www.darkmillenniumonline.com/"><em>Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium Online</em></a>? Did you watch <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/20/new-war40k-trailer-introduces-first-playable-race/">the Imperium of Man trailer</a> and gibber, "More! MORE!" So did we. Unfortunately, it was looking like we'd have to be content with hints... <br />
<br />
...but fortunately, <a href="http://games.on.net/article/10018/Video_Interview_Warhammer_40000_Dark_Millennium_Online">Games On Net cornered David Adams</a>, Vigil Games' GM, and pumped him for further details. While Adams was reluctant to go into the specifics of gameplay, he did open up about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-40k/"><em>WAR40K's</em></a> engine, which is the same one the company used for <a href="http://community.darksidersvideogame.com/"><em>Darksiders</em></a>. The engine is being tweaked for the MMO, although Adams testified that it was already great with portraying a seamless world, which should be perfect for <em>WAR40K's</em> needs. DirectX 11 is also slated for inclusion.<br />
<br />
So will the graphic requirements be low enough that the game could run on a toaster, or will it be a high-performance-only excursion? While Adams admits that the necessary graphic options will take a decent machine to run well, he's hoping to have as many visual toggles as possible so that <em>WAR40K </em>can reach a wider audience. He wouldn't say how many characters he expects the engine to handle in a certain area, other than to claim: "Big, it's 40K, it's all about big giant battlefields."<br />

As promised <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/24/a-look-at-gamescom-2010-part-one/">earlier this week</a>, we present part two of our video series documenting <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2010">Gamescom 2010</a> from the good people at <a href="http://www.maverickmedia.co.uk/">Maverick Media</a>. In this one, we have a look at <em><a href="http://www.vigilgames.com/dmo">Warhammer 40K: Dark Millennium Online</a>, <a href="http://www.tera-online.com/">TERA</a>, </em><em><a href="http://www.endofnations.com/en/">End of Nations</a>, </em><a href="http://www.darkdaysarecoming.com/"><em>The Secret World</em></a>'s amazing booth and Ben before his morning coffee and makeup.<br />
<br />
If you enjoyed the tongue-in-cheek humor of the first video, you'll certainly love this second video found just after the jump. E3 is always an exciting time full of announcements, reveals and hundreds of journalists attempting to leech every last drop of information from crafty studios. It's pretty much insane, and if your head isn't exploding from all of the news, trailers, screenshots and surprises, then I'm going to have to ask you to hand in your gamer card.<br />
<br />
For Turbine, this year's E3 has been a crucial moment in the company's history. Not only are we seeing them under the Warner Bros. banner in public, but they had to step up and both defend and build off of the revelation of <a href="http://www.lotro.com/"><em>Lord of the Ring Online's</em></a> new business model. They were smart not to save the announcement itself for E3, because the gaming public and the press needed a bit of time to both digest the news and get past the initial emotional reaction so they could bring the studio thoughtful questions. Turbine's undoubtedly enjoying its fair share of press coverage at E3 because of this, and that's saying something considering all of the other heavy-hitters like <a href="http://www.swtor.com/"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a>, <a href="http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com/"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a> and <a href="http://www.vigilgames.com/home"><em>Warhammer 40K</em></a> that are making appearances.<br />
<br />
No matter what your feelings are on the F2P model, Turbine's got a lot more for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online/"><em>LotRO</em></a> gamers than just that -- in fact, they've been bombarding us with so much good new stuff that it's hard to know where to start. So let's take a quick tour through 10 exciting additions and updates to the game that they've revealed.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/18/the-road-to-mordor-enedwaith-exploration-expo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Road to Mordor: Enedwaith Exploration Expo</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/18/the-road-to-mordor-enedwaith-exploration-expo/">The Road to Mordor: Enedwaith Exploration Expo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 18 Jun 2010 11:00:00 EST. Let's face it: At E3, every studio, game and gadget struggles to be the talk of the show, but there's just so much going on that most exhibits and demos get lost in the noise. Therefore, when buzz erupts to eclipse the noise, it behooves the gamer to sit up and take notice. <a href="http://www.vigilgames.com/home"><em>Warhammer 40k: Dark Millennium Online</em></a> is buzzing strong right now, like thousands of armored, heretic-hunting space bees, especially after <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/15/trailer-revealed-for-warhammer-40k-dark-millenium-online/">revealing the trailer earlier this week</a>. With the previously secretive MMO out in the open, fans are hungry for any and all details about this entry in the beloved 40k franchise.<br />
<br />
Fortunately, Massively made fast friends with Vigil's Mark Downie, who was more than happy to spill the space beans about the look of the game, faithfulness to the IP and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/warhammer-40k-dark-millennium-online/"><em>Warhammer 40k's</em></a> release window. Buckle up, engage thrusters and hit the jump for the full conversation.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/17/e3-2010-interview-with-warhammer-40ks-mark-downie/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E3 2010: Interview with Warhammer 40K's Mark Downie</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/17/e3-2010-interview-with-warhammer-40ks-mark-downie/">E3 2010: Interview with Warhammer 40K's Mark Downie</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 17 Jun 2010 19:30:00 EST. Good afternoon, cadets and admirals. Welcome to this week's edition of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>, your ever-expanding guide to <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>. Last time, we discussed <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/10/captains-log-five-basics-of-ground-combat-in-star-trek-online/">some basics of ground combat</a>, and I promised more to come. But I've decided to change course a bit, so we'll cover those next week. <br />
<br />
Instead, I thought it might be fun to discuss what's on every Earth nerd's mind right now: E3! <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2010">The Electronic Entertainment Expo</a> has engines on full impulse this week in Los Angeles, and amid all the grand news we don't care about -- I was counting on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/15/nintendo-3ds-first-hands-on/">the 3DS</a> to not be totally awesome so I wouldn't have to replace my <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dsi-xl/">DSiXL</a>! Curses! -- the MMO news is flying fast and furious. With all the news and shiny images of forthcoming space-based MMOs, should fans worry that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO's</em></a> days are numbered?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/17/captains-log-should-star-trek-online-fans-fear-the-competition/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Should Star Trek Online fans fear the competition?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/17/captains-log-should-star-trek-online-fans-fear-the-competition/">Captain's Log: Should Star Trek Online fans fear the competition?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 17 Jun 2010 12:00:00 EST. THQ and Vigil Games promised to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/04/warhammer-40k-mmo-to-be-fully-revealed-this-summer/">"fully reveal" the Warhammer 40k MMO at E3</a>, and they're standing by that promise. Our first peek at this revelation comes in the form of a brand new trailer, as well as the game's title.<br />
<br />
<span style="float: right; margin-left: 10px; margin-top: 7px;"> <script> var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/pc_games/Trailer_revealed_for_Warhammer_40k_Dark_Millennium_Online'; </script> <script src="http://digg.com/api/diggthis.js"></script></span> The trailer for <a href="http://www.vigilgames.com/home"><em>Warhammer 40k: Dark Millennium Online</em></a> gives us the backstory: demons, aliens and heretics versus man. We get our first look at gameplay as well as the trailer pans through several different battlegrounds. <br />
<br />
The trailer comes at the same time as a site redesign for <a href="http://www.vigilgames.com/home">Vigil Games</a>, which brings a heavy focus on this highly anticipated game. Follow along after the jump to see the trailer, and keep an eye out for Massively's exclusive interview with THQ and hands-on demo of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-40k/"><em>Warhammer 40k: Dark Millennium Online</em></a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/15/trailer-revealed-for-warhammer-40k-dark-millenium-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Trailer revealed for Warhammer 40k: Dark Millennium Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/15/trailer-revealed-for-warhammer-40k-dark-millenium-online/">Trailer revealed for Warhammer 40k: Dark Millennium Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 15 Jun 2010 13:37:00 EST. There are two wonderful parts to talking about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/The-MMO-Report/">The MMO Report</a>: we don't have to think up a clever title, and we don't have to try and explain endgame mechanics in half a sentence. We also don't have to worry about rounding up the week's big news, since Casey Schreiner does it for us, and this week had its fair share of news. Kicking off with the leaks out of <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a>'s next major expansion, <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/cataclysm/"><em>Cataclysm</em></a>, the show talks about the notable reveals and the note that the leaks were removed at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Blizzard/">Blizzard</a>'s request.<br />
<br />
After the leaks are out of the way, we move on to the graphical designs of the upcoming <a href="http://www.riftgame.com/en/"><em>Rift: Planes of Telara</em></a>, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/06/thq-says-warhammer-40k-mmo-doesnt-need-a-million-subscribers/">rather modest subscriber hopes</a> of the upcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-40k/"><em>Warhammer 40k</em></a> game, and the <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> free trial that's just been released. And, of course, there's a dip inside the mailbag to see what's been submitted by way of reader questions. Jump on past the cut for this week's installment of news and amusement, and tune in every Thursday for a new installment from <a href="http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/704669/The-MMO-Report-Thursday-May-13th.html">G4TV</a> and Massively.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/13/this-week-on-the-mmo-report/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>This week on the MMO Report</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/13/this-week-on-the-mmo-report/">This week on the MMO Report</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 13 May 2010 19:30:00 EST. The <em>Warhammer 40k</em> team is small and very experienced, so they have the advantage of skipping a lot of expensive trial-and-error, moving straight to building the game right. <br />
<br />
In a <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/28417/THQ_Warhammer_40K_MMO_Doesnt_Need_A_Million_Subscribers.php">recent conference call</a>, THQ's CEO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/brian-farrell">Brian Farrell</a> pointed to the relatively low investment cost of the <em>Warhammer 40k</em> MMO as the reason that they don't need to aim for huge numbers: <em>"We don't need the kind of subscriber levels that people throw around, like a million subscribers, to make a lot of money on this title. If we get anywhere near that level, we'll be making <i>a lot</i> of money."</em><br />
<br />
Given the enthusiasm shown by fans of the title, they just might hit those numbers anyway.<br />

Have you been looking forward to the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-40k"><em>Warhammer 40K</em></a> MMO for what feels like forever? The people at <a href="http://us.thq.com/us">THQ</a> have been offering up small pieces of information since they announced the game a few years ago -- last April we finally <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/03/warhammer-40k-mmo-gets-a-release-date/">got a release year</a> of 2012, and just in December we were given some <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/02/an-early-look-at-the-warhammer-40k-mmo/">beautiful concept art</a>.<br />
<br />
Now we've been given even better news. THQ plans to "fully unveil" <em>Warhammer 40K</em> this summer at E3. The <a href="http://www.e3expo.com/">Electronic Entertainment Expo</a> will be at the Los Angeles Convention Center this year, from June 15th-17th, and if you were thinking of attending, this is a very good reason to hop off the fence.<br />
<br />
THQ has kept the game largely under wraps for now, but the developers are pretty excited. Team member <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/joe-madureira">Joe Madureira</a> promises large scale combat, tons of customization, and great-looking characters.<br />
<br />
June suddenly seems a lot farther away, but we'll keep a close eye out for more news on the game until then!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/04/warhammer-40k-mmo-to-be-fully-revealed-this-summer/">Warhammer 40k MMO to be fully revealed this summer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 04 Feb 2010 10:30:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">
	We've been hearing about a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-40k/"><em>Warhammer 40k</em> MMO</a> for a very long time, beginning back in March of 2007. We also received some tantalizing general details back in<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/09/warhammer-40k-mmo-details-emerge-from-cover/"> April of 2008</a> -- It will have an RPG feel, there will be extensive gunplay, and all races important to <em>Warhammer 40k</em> lore will be included. Spring of 2008 continued the information train with several interviews here and there in which Vigil Games offered a few more details and assured fans that development was continuing.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
After that, all was quiet again until April of this year, when a familiar name popped up on a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/03/warhammer-40k-mmo-gets-a-release-date/">list of release dates</a> from THQ. <em>Warhammer 40k</em> MMO was given a 2012 release date -- subject to change, of course. Again, all was quiet after that, until now.<br />
<br />
Yesterday, <a href="http://kotaku.com/5415951/an-early-look-at-the-warhammer-40k-mmo/gallery/">Kotaku received new concept art</a> for the <em>Warhammer 40k</em> MMO, and while it's not exactly a completed game, it's a step in the right direction. The images include a nice look at character models and weaponry, so follow along after the jump to see for yourself.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/02/an-early-look-at-the-warhammer-40k-mmo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>An early look at the Warhammer 40K MMO</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/02/an-early-look-at-the-warhammer-40k-mmo/">An early look at the Warhammer 40K MMO</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 02 Dec 2009 11:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.thq-games.com/uk">THQ</a> just <a href="http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/57994">unveiled some release dates for their major game titles</a> over the next few years and if you were getting excited for the <a href="http://www.vigilgames.com/games_40k.php"><em>Warhammer 40k</em></a> MMO, you might feel a bit deflated after reading this. The above slide shows that <em>WH40K</em> is slated for a 2012 expected release date, which of course is subject to change.<br /><br />We haven't heard much from <a href="http://www.vigilgames.com/">Vigil Games</a> since May 2008 about this title, but <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/04/pc-gamers-warhammer-40k-interview/">what we know sounds promising</a> so far. The MMO's creative director is none other than comic book artist extraordinaire, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Madureira">Joe Madureira</a> (side bar: my favorite artist of all time). Vigil hopes to stay <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/12/warhammer-40k-mmo-info-update/">as true to the tabletop experience as they can</a> while still remaining an MMORPG. Finally, the world's primary weapons will be guns and vehicles may play a large part in combat.<br /><br />While many fans of the <a href="http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/">Games Workshop</a> miniatures game have found a familiar home in <a href="http://warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a>, many others have complained that <a href="http://mythicentertainment.com">Mythic</a>'s incarnation of the <em>Warhammer</em> setting is not harsh, gritty, or dark enough. It will be interesting to see if <a href="http://massively.com/tag/warhammer-40k"><em>WH40k</em></a> can capture this or if Vigil will opt for a less mature environment (and rating).<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/03/warhammer-40k-mmo-gets-a-release-date/">Warhammer 40K MMO gets a release date</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 03 Apr 2009 10:00:00 EST. I can't be said to venture within with any great frequency, but something particular caught my eye, and I was intrigued enough to duck in and talk to the staff. You see, uncharacteristically, the store was devoid of customers for the first time I had seen since it had opened.</p>
<p>I spoke with Todd, the store manager, who told me that it had been like that for a couple of weeks. Customers and sales had suddenly dropped off, leaving the store empty for hours at a time. Previously there were customers passing the time, discussing products and their collective hobby for extended periods, as well as making purchases. Without warning it had all dried up. Todd and I toyed with the speculation that perhaps his regular customers for miniatures and related paraphernalia had simply chosen to join the epic battle between Order and Chaos online instead of offline, but came to no real conclusion.</p>
<p>So, what about it, enlightened readers -- has <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online/">Warhammer Online</a></em> curbed your time with the tabletop and face-to-face versions of this popular game, or are you still the loyal grognards and figure-fans you always were?</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/16/the-daily-grind-has-warhammer-online-dragged-you-away-from-the/">The Daily Grind: Has Warhammer Online dragged you away from the tabletop?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 16 Oct 2008 08:00:00 EST. If you've been following <a href="http://www.plaync.co.uk">NCsoft Europe</a> around lately, you'll notice they've been <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/29/ncsoft-europes-ultimate-heroic-weekend/">attending a ton of conferences</a> and keeping fairly busy with charitable events as well. This coming weekend is no exception, as they'll be participating in the <a href="http://www.ukgamesexpo.co.uk/">UK Games Expo 2008</a> event in Birmingham, after just returning from Bristol's <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/ncsofteurope/sets/72157605019051375/">Comicexpo</a>. Also, with them once again are the artists from <a href="http://drawtheworldtogether.wordpress.com/welcome/">Draw the World Together</a>, a charity formed to help children in developing third-world countries.<br /><br />During this coming event, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft/">NCsoft</a> will be joined by <a href="http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/">Games Workshop</a> artist Karl Kopinski. You may have seen Karl's amazing work if you're a <em><a href="http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/landing.jsp?catId=cat210002">Warhammer</a> </em>fan, or if you've checked out <a href="http://www.karlkopinski.com/">his personal site</a> itself. The title is a little IP called <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-40k/">Warhammer 40k</a></em>, the gritty guns-and-gremlins sibling to <em><a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com">Warhammer Online</a></em> and the <em>Warhammer</em> fantasy RPG. The Vigil developers offer up a far-distant preview of what they're hoping to offer in 40k once the dust settles. From the sounds of things, the 40k approach to the Warhammer world will be a lot closer to the 'mass combat' style of gameplay we see in the miniatures game.<br /><br />That said, the developers also <a href="http://www.gamesradar.com/f/warhammer-40000-online/a-20080502174245201051">made it clear that this is going to be a roleplaying game</a>. As they put it, <em>"Relic has the RTS angle covered with the awesome Dawn of War series - we are making an RPG."</em> An RPG, but with a number of twists: guns will be the primary form of combat, incredibly customizable characters, no forced grouping, and the possibility of vehicles playing an important role in the gameworld. So far Vigil is saying all the right things, offering up hope that they're going to polish until they get it right: <em>"We want each and every race to have weight in the game world, and feel distinct. We won't include a race if we can't do them justice."</em> Let's hope that attitude sees them through the long process of bringing an MMO to market.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/12/warhammer-40k-mmo-info-update/">Warhammer 40k MMO info update</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 12 May 2008 13:00:00 EST. Although the initial difference between the two is obvious -- one's a fantasy RTS, the other is a science fiction RPG -- a <a href="http://www.pcgamer.com/archives/2008/04/42908_-_warhamm.html">recent interview</a> with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/vigil-games/">Vigil Games</a>' General Manager David Adams and Studio Creative Director <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Madureira">Joe Madureira</a> offers up more juicy details.<br /><br />Topics covered in the interview include customization options, available classes and NPCs, and how the existing <em>Warhammer 40k</em> universe will be introduced to gamers who may not have ever played the tabletop version. While there are still no beta or release dates on offer, development continues apace. We'll have more on this title as news emerges.<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/04/pc-gamers-warhammer-40k-interview/">PC Gamer's Warhammer 40k interview</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 04 May 2008 11:00:00 EST. This MMO will play more like an RPG than an FPS, even though there will be extensive gunplay elements, such as flanking, suppressive fire, and cover. <br /><br />Additionally, fans of the franchise will be happy to know that their favorite race, no matter what that might be, will find a home in-game. <span class="text_article_body"> "All of the races important to <em>Warhammer 40,000</em> lore (not to mention the fans) will be represented", says creative director <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Madureira">Joe Madureira</a>, formerly of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvel_comics">Marvel Comics</a>. He adds that there will be "Tons of stuff hanging off your character, weapons, scrolls ... we are going to have the coolest looking characters of any MMO, ever. Once we begin releasing images, feel free to call me on that." That's tempting fate, like saying 'At least it's not raining'. But given that it sounds as though <a href="http://www.thq.com/search/">THQ</a>'s taking their time in developing this game, it could very well be true. We'll keep up to date with further news as it arises.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=186373">computerandvideogames</a>]</span><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/09/warhammer-40k-mmo-details-emerge-from-cover/">Warhammer 40k MMO details emerge from cover</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 09 Apr 2008 13:00:00 EST.
