Just a week after the announcement of the ambitious <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/call-to-arms">Call to Arms</a></em> expansion for <em><a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com">Warhammer Online</a></em>, the first in a series of live events drops onto the game servers. Today sees <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=605">the release of the 1.1.1 patch to <em>WAR</em></a>, bringing with it <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/liveevents/2009NightofMurder.php">the sinister Night of Murder Valentine's Day event</a>. This macabre outing (traditionally associated with <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com/armiesofWAR/darkelves/WitchElf.php">the Witch Elf class</a>) will give a poisonous new meaning to this traditionally saccharine-sweet holiday. Check out a snippet from our interview with Mythic's Jeff Hickman to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/29/valentines-day-in-warhammer-online-announced-as-the-night-of-mu/">get a sense of what you'll be doing for the next week</a>.<br /><br />Other features of the 1.1.1 patch include the addition of new flight points throughout the game world, brand new quests from Keep Lords, and the launch of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online">Warhammer Online</a></em> in Russia. The Open RvR changes in particular are outstanding, continuing to build on the influence system the company put in with the last few patches. <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=605">Full patch details are available</a> on the Warhammer Herald site.<hr />

<div align="center"><em>"Keg End is here, with the mud and the blood and the beer!!"</em><br /></div>
<br />It seems that most of the major MMO titles have <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/holiday-event/">gotten into the holiday spirit</a>, including <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a> with its Dwarf New Year's festival of Keg End. The event begins today, December 17th and continues through to January 5th. <br /><br />We knew <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/12/celebrate-the-holidays-with-warhammer-onlines-keg-end-live-even/">a bit about Keg End</a> before. Namely how it seemed to be an in-game event where it's perfectly OK to act like a violent drunk with a burning desire to blow things up, and then brag about it (with some new emotes). Well, Keg End promises to be all that and more, given the event info <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mythic-entertainment">Mythic Entertainment</a> released today. No matter whether you're Order or Destruction, there's plenty of fun to be had and hell to raise. The best part is you don't need to feel guilty or make excuses the morning after (it wasn't you, it was the 'Frothy Goodness' ale)... although you may be stuck with the new in-game title "The Drunkard" for a while.<hr />

Near the end of last week <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mythic-entertainment">Mythic Entertainment</a> added to the momentous announcements across the industry at large by dropping the first part of an enormous patch to <em><a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com">Warhammer Online</a></em>. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/11/warhammer-online-patch-1-1a-goes-live/">Patch 1.1a began the road to newly revamped systems</a> for the game, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/11/warhammer-developers-weigh-in-on-1-1a-rvr-changes/">our chat with Mythic's Drescher, Gershowitz, and Wheeler</a> revealed <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/11/warhammer-developers-explain-their-expansion-new-content-philoso/">numerous components of the future <em>WAR</em></a>. Now Mythic has <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=525">furthered that path by releasing <em>Warhammer Online</em> Patch 1.1b</a>. Servers went down early this morning, and the company expects them to be live again by 1pm EST. <br /><br />Despite the change from a to b, this patch isn't nearly as big a deal ... unless you're a fan of the Nordenwatch scenario, which has been offline for a few days. The 'watch is now back online after a fix. The developers have also <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/13/war-grab-bag-no-6-orvr-easy-pqs-and-dungeons/">continued to tweak open RvR</a>, trying to get the reward systems right. Reward, XP, and influence have all been added for attacking and defending Fortresses, making the end-game situation that much more worthwhile. Renown gains when engaging in oRvR are now tweaked as well, with Renown gain based on the differential between a Player's Rank and their Renown Rank. Diminishing returns are now a part of the system as well to reduce farming. <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=525">Check the full notes for an example</a> on this and some further explanation of the systems change.<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/16/warhammer-online-patches-to-1-1b-just-days-after-1-1a/">Warhammer Online patches to 1.1b just days after 1.1a</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 16 Dec 2008 10:00:00 EST. A couple of the questions are directed at Open RvR; we're told to keep an eye out for some changes that will "make zone control more intuitive and rewarding" in the future. The new Easy PQ system is also asked about, and we learn that although the influence bonus for getting to the next stage of a PQ will be less (past Stage 2), all other influence gains are the same as a normal PQ. Oh, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/07/warhammer-online-immortalizing-top-players-in-stone/">those fancy statues</a> that the top players have built in their honor to reflect the leaderboards? Expect enemies to be able to smash them down if the city becomes contested.<br /><br />The dungeon feature looks at four different instances, two for lower levels and two for the level 40s. The dungeon entrances are pointed out, and their theme and lore are discussed -- it's in no way spoilerific, and is meant merely to entice players to visit and discover more for themselves. Part 1 of the feature includes the Altdorf Sewers, the Sacellum, Bilerot Burrows and Sigmar's Crypt.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/13/war-grab-bag-no-6-orvr-easy-pqs-and-dungeons/">WAR Grab Bag No. 6: oRvR, Easy PQs, and dungeons</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 13 Dec 2008 09:00:00 EST. But the most important fixes, in this writer's humble opinion, are for the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/11/warhammer-developers-weigh-in-on-1-1a-rvr-changes/">oRvR system</a>.<br /><br />The amount of influence for achieving offensive battlefield objectives has been changed while leaving the influence system the same for defense. The stated reason for this change is for balance - in order to encourage more players to use the system. In addition, high-level players will once again be <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/05/one-shots-fowl-play/">turned into chickens</a> if they enter lower-ranked RvR areas. Scenarios will also close when too few people are in them.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/12/warhammer-patches-patch-1-1a/">Warhammer patches patch 1.1a</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 12 Dec 2008 13:30:00 EST. A few days ago Mark Jacobs offered up the heartening news that the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mythic-entertainment">Mythic Entertainment</a> developers are <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/07/mythic-putting-off-expansion-work-to-focus-on-live-game/">focused solely on supporting the <span style="font-style: italic;">Warhammer Online</span> live game</a>. While the devs have had some discussions about expansion content, for the foreseeable future the company is going whole-hog on supporting and advancing the existing game. We spoke with Adam Gershowitz and Associate Producer Josh Drescher about Mark's statement, and got some deep insights into their philosophy on new content.<br /><br />Offered Josh Drescher, <span style="font-style: italic;">"We want to reward player loyalty, we want to show we're dedicated to the ongoing quality of the product we already have on the market, and we want to leverage all the resources we've got. We have an entire team here that's already worked their fingers to the bone on this game. Adam has no fingers left, he just has two stumps he uses to beat on the keyboard."<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;"></span></span>R<span style="font-style: italic;"><span style="font-style: italic;"></span>e</span>ad on below the cut for full details on everything from patching philosophies to the <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">Warhammer</span></a> team's plans for future live events.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/11/warhammer-developers-explain-their-expansion-new-content-philoso/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Warhammer developers explain their expansion/new content philosophy</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/11/warhammer-developers-explain-their-expansion-new-content-philoso/">Warhammer developers explain their expansion/new content philosophy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 11 Dec 2008 09:00:00 EST. We've already talked this morning about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/11/warhammer-online-patch-1-1a-goes-live/">today's patch 1.1a for <span style="font-style: italic;">Warhammer Online</span></a>, as well as the numerous changes to RvR <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/11/warhammer-developers-weigh-in-on-1-1a-rvr-changes/">incentivizing the open field style of play</a>. We also spoke with Adam Gershowitz and Josh Drescher about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/09/knight-of-the-blazing-sun-and-black-guard-careers-now-available/">the recently released new careers</a>: the Knight of the Blazing Sun and the Black Guard. They indicated those two will be the last new careers we should expect to see in the game for some time. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/20/one-of-warhammers-cut-classes-wont-be-coming-back/">We already knew the Dwarf Hammerer was out permanently</a>; now it looks like anyone looking forward to the Orc Choppa or even the rumored Dwarven Slayer will be doing so for a while yet.<br /><br />Said Josh Drescher, <span style="font-style: italic;">"We're not going to add things back in simply to say, 'hey, new crap'. If you see new careers in the future, it will be because we see it as new, useful content that improves on the experience the players are already enjoying."</span><br /><br />Read on below the cut for our full discussion about the new careers and the future of content addition in the game.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/11/no-new-careers-any-time-soon-say-the-warhammer-developers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>No new careers any time soon, say the Warhammer developers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/11/no-new-careers-any-time-soon-say-the-warhammer-developers/">No new careers any time soon, say the Warhammer developers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 11 Dec 2008 08:30:00 EST. With <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/11/warhammer-online-patch-1-1a-goes-live/">today's launch of the 1.1a patch</a>, the face of <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a> is changing dramatically. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/11/warhammer-developers-weigh-in-on-1-1a-rvr-changes/">New incentives for participating in Open RvR</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/11/no-new-careers-any-time-soon-say-the-warhammer-developers/">the two brand new careers</a> are the biggest selling points, but there are numerous quality of live improvements wrapped up in this patch. With all these great new changes arriving today, we just had to ask: are you in the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online"><em>WAR</em></a>?<br /><br />If you're still playing <em>Warhammer</em>, what do you think of these new changes? We know some of you have stepped away to rejoin other games ... what do you think of patch 1.1a? Are these tweaks enough to pull you back? Are you going to be logging in this weekend after a hiatus? Let us know in the comments, and make sure to tell us what you think of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mythic-entertainment">Mythic</a>'s approach here. <hr />

Yesterday, just a day before <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/11/warhammer-online-patch-1-1a-goes-live/">this morning's announcement of the 1.1a patch</a> to <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.warhammeronline.com">Warhammer Online</a>, we had the chance to speak with some of the leading lights in the Warhammer development process. Adam Gershowitz, Associate Producer Josh Drescher, and Designer Brian Wheeler laid out the ins and outs of Realm vs. Realm changes in our discussion. <br /><br />Said Josh Drescher,<span style="font-style: italic;"> "The core philosophy for 1.1 as regards RvR is to guarantee you a rewarding time in open field combat. It should be just as rewarding as spending an hour anywhere else in the game. We want to address the problem where players would want to participate in open RvR, but had limited time and felt they would be better rewarded in a Scenario. We were specifically addressing that in this update this time around."</span><br /><br />Read on below the cut for our full discussion.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/11/warhammer-developers-weigh-in-on-1-1a-rvr-changes/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Warhammer developers weigh in on 1.1a RvR changes</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/11/warhammer-developers-weigh-in-on-1-1a-rvr-changes/">Warhammer developers weigh in on 1.1a RvR changes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 11 Dec 2008 07:30:00 EST. After months of smaller, targeted patches <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">Warhammer Online</span></a> players are getting a heaping helping of new and shiny goodness as <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=506">patch 1.1 hits the live servers later today</a>. The Warhammer Herald is trumpeting the arrival of the much-anticipated new game tweaks, and the server wranglers at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mythic-entertainment">Mythic</a> hope to have everyone back online by 1pm ET. We've <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/war-patch-1.1">talked at length about the new content arriving in this patch</a>, but here's a quick high-level overview:<br />
<ul>
    <li><span style="font-weight: bold;">New Careers</span> - These plate-wearing soldiers actually <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/09/knight-of-the-blazing-sun-and-black-guard-careers-now-available/">arrived on the live servers earlier this week</a>, but their arrival is technically a part of this patch.</li>
    <li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Open RvR Influence</span> - As we've talked about in the past, the company is really trying to direct players into the RvR 'lakes' to take on keep sieges and battlefield objectives. Check out our exclusive interview with Josh Drescher and company about 1.1 RvR goals.</li>
    <li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Easy Public Quests</span> - One PQ at each chapter of tier 1, across all the racial pairings, has been tuned to 'easy mode'. Challenges and rewards have been reduced to allow players the chance to solo their way through that content.</li>
    <li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Armor Set Improvements</span> - Itemization across the armor sets has been tweaked, in some cases increasing the power of set pieces while in others making them more accessible at earlier levels.</li>
    <li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Main Assist and UI improvements</span> - A new 'main assist' mechanic will make it easier to focus fire on the tank's target, while tweaks to the PQ UI and the addition of item hyperlinking makes the game easier to manager overall.</li>
</ul>
There's a bucket more content in there as well, everything from player statues in the cities to graphic option tweak. And that's not all; you might have noticed the 'a' added to the 1.1 designation. Mark Jacobs wants us to be sure to know <a href="http://www.warhammeralliance.com/forums/showthread.php?t=211905">there will be lots more goodness coming soon</a>. <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/patchnotes/index.php?id=2008_1-1-0">Check out the full official patch notes</a> for the all details on this first content drop, and make sure to check out our interviews on the site today for more insights. In <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/11/warhammer-developers-weigh-in-on-1-1a-rvr-changes/">addition to our RvR chat</a>, we also talk about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/11/warhammer-developers-explain-their-expansion-new-content-philoso/">the team's attitude towards new content</a> and some <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/11/no-new-careers-any-time-soon-say-the-warhammer-developers/">news about the rate we'll be getting new classes</a>. We just finished a big pre-1.1 interview with some of the <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.warhammeronline.com">Warhammer Online</a> developers, and we'll have a full writeup of that conversation available soon. We wanted to let you know right away, though, that details on the next big live event in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online"><span style="font-style: italic;">Warhammer</span></a> will be coming very soon. Josh Drescher, speaking with us alongside Adam Gershowitz and members of the RvR team, let us know that we'll be getting <a href="http://tok.blogwarhammer.net/?p=209">full details on the Keg's End live event</a> as of this Friday. <br /><br />Additionally, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/war-patch-1.1">the much-anticipated 1.1 patch</a> will be jumping from the test to the live servers 'very, very soon'. According to the developers, always in good spirits, they're "spellchecking the patch notes" right now. That's an indication that we'll be seeing things like the new open RvR influence system on the live servers probably within the next week or so. They're hopeful it will make it out there this week, but made no promises.<br /><br />For video of Paul's Barnett's off-the-cuff introduction to the Keg's End event, read on below the cut.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/10/warhammer-online-kegs-end-details-coming-friday-1-1-going-live/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Warhammer Online Keg's End details coming Friday, 1.1 going live 'soon'</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/10/warhammer-online-kegs-end-details-coming-friday-1-1-going-live/">Warhammer Online Keg's End details coming Friday, 1.1 going live 'soon'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 10 Dec 2008 15:00:00 EST. In a lengthy thread over at the VN boards, players began offering up a number of thoughts about <a href="http://vnboards.ign.com/warhammer_online_age_of_reckoning_general_board/b22997/109643703/r109648028/">what they'd like to see in the first expansion</a> to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mythic-entertainment">Mythic Entertainment</a>'s <em><a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com">Warhammer Online</a></em>. They had a couple of great ideas, too, with thread-starter DiscipleofWar suggesting it focus on the fabled <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Araby_(Warhammer)">Land of the Dead</a>. That would allow players to come up against the forces of the Tomb Kings, fun objective-based gameplay for each faction, and even the introduction of a new third 'Dogs of War' army that will allow players to play ruthless mercenaries.<br /><br />Surprisingly, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mark-jacobs">Mark Jacobs</a> dropped in to add his own view on the conversation. Mr. Jacobs states that they are actually not working on the expansion at all right now, other than in theoretical design work. The reason is very straightforward: <em>"We are not pushing an XPack out the door at the expense of WAR. And once we begin work on an XPack, it's going to take us quite a while to do it."</em> They don't want to take away from the tuning problems and issues that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online"><em>Warhammer</em></a> currently has just to push on to an expansion. Good on you, Mythic! Music to the players' ears, we imagine. <hr />

Now the Knight of the Burning Sun and the Blackguard are in testing, available to the folks who <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/heavy-metal/">completed the Heavy Metal event requirements</a>, and first impressions are starting to surface from the players. Wizards and Wenches has <a href="http://wnw.blogwarhammer.net/2008/12/05/knight-of-the-burning-sun-first-impressions/">a lengthy look at the Empire's stalwart Knight</a>, breaking down everything from the way they look to how they hand in solo situations.<br /><br />The author's conclusion is that it <em>"feels polished and really useful."</em> Despite the tanking role the Knight steps into, it offers a large amount of support from Auras and controlling elements like knockback. It's also apparently very solo-friendly ... enough to make the Warrior Priest-loving blogger reconsider which character to play as his 'main'. <br /><br />Have you had a chance to play with the Knight yet? On Tuesday, we reported on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/02/warhammer-online-1-0-6-patch-adds-new-classes-tidal-wave-of-upd/">patch 1.0.6</a>, which brought tons of changes for classes and combat. Now it seems the<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/27/warhammer-online-rvr-performance-and-stability-improvements-fort/"> RvR performance issues are getting some of their previously-promised love</a> in the form of a <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=484">client update to help boost frame rate</a> and reduce flickering effects... And <a href="http://www.warhammeralliance.com/forums/showthread.php?t=206088">patch 1.1 is live on the test server</a> with the intention of releasing today.<br /><br />With a whopping 14 pages of patch notes and development preceding that of 1.0.6, <a href="http://www.warhammeralliance.com/forums/showthread.php?t=206090">patch 1.1 promises to bring updates</a> to nearly all aspects of the game. There will be new careers available, UI changes, the ability to hyperlink in chat, and most excitingly the new open RvR influence system. You can even get <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statue">a statue</a> of your character put up in the capital. Strike a pose!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/04/making-warhammer-smoother-1-1-patch-at-a-time/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Making Warhammer smoother 1.1 patch at a time</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/04/making-warhammer-smoother-1-1-patch-at-a-time/">Making Warhammer smoother 1.1 patch at a time</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 04 Dec 2008 07:00:00 EST.
