Many of us have mused from time to time what we would do if we happened to get our hands on coveted GM powers in our MMOs. While it may be tantalizing to think of slaughtering raid bosses with a single command, it's probably best that these virtual god-like powers are kept out of the public's reach. Unfortunately for the <a href="http://www.anarchy-online.com"><em>Anarchy Online</em></a> team, this scenario went from hypothetical to chaotically real this past week.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/anarchy-online/"><em>AO</em></a> Game Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/colin-cragg/">Colin Cragg</a> labeled it an "<a href="http://www.anarchy-online.com/wsp/anarchy/frontend.cgi?func=publish.show&amp;template=content&amp;func_id=2615&amp;table=CONTENT">unplanned and unwanted volunteer event</a>" when a player managed to access a GM account and ran amok for over two hours in the game last Tuesday. Surprisingly, the player in question did try to "put on a spectacular show with special guest stars," as Cragg put it, although the event ended up causing a huge mess. Some players became unable to fight due to fear effects while others unwittingly received special items in their inventory. The team spent over 30 hours cleaning up the situation, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom/">Funcom</a> had to suspend over 140 accounts until these items could be removed. It is unclear if they caught the person responsible.<br />
<br />
Surprisingly, Cragg says that this wasn't the first time that someone took a GM account for a joyride in the game, due to the company's policy of trusting volunteers with this access. Even so, he had a few strong words for anyone who would do this: <em>"If anyone is reading this who is responsible for these attacks GIVE US A BREAK. All we are trying to do here is trying to continue to develop a game we all enjoy. If you are mad about your accounts being banned, or something like that, please try to grow up and accept the fact that you very likely deserved it."</em><br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.anarchy-online.com/wsp/anarchy/frontend.cgi?func=publish.show&amp;template=content&amp;func_id=2615&amp;table=CONTENT">You can read Cragg's full account of this event</a> at <em>Anarchy Online</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/10/anarchy-online-player-hijacks-gm-account-runs-amok-in-game/">Anarchy Online player hijacks GM account, runs amok in game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 10 Jan 2011 10:00:00 EST. Normally on Massively we love offering you <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/giveaways">giveaways</a> and beta keys and all sorts of goodies for reading our site. And, normally, we tell you where all of these fantastic prizes and keys are coming from. Companies love that we, essentially, promote their games, and you guys love having the chance to check out new games. It's a win/win.<br />
<br />
Today's beta opportunity is a bit different. Very different, in fact! Today's post is regarding a super seekret beta test that we're not allowed to name in public. Shhhhh. What we can tell you, though, is that the game is from a prominent game developer, and the company is looking for 100 volunteers to provide feedback on the game during a focused testing phase this weekend. Currently, gamers from the United Kingdom, United States, and Germany are eligible to volunteer.<br />
<br />
<strike>If you're interested in playing a mysterious game this weekend,<strong> send an email to </strong></strike><a href="mailto:sera@massively.com"><strike><strong>sera@massively.com</strong></strike></a><strike><strong> with the subject "Beta Test Volunteer."</strong> If you're one of the first 100 people to mail me, I'll respond back to you with a key to the test and instructions on how to download and play the game.</strike><br />
<br />
Remember though: This is a serious test! The devs at this company are looking for feedback on their game, and they're hoping you're willing to give it to them! So if you're up for it, mail away!<br />
<br />
[<strong>Update:</strong> Bolded the e-mail address and the subject line, because apparently many of you did not see the requested subject line. I love you all, even when you send me e-mails with crazy subjects. ~Sera]<br />
<br />
[<strong>Update 2:</strong> Holy heck guys! I hit over 500 e-mails in 20 minutes. Looks like I have my 100 participants! Thank you for your interest!]<br type="_moz" /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/04/who-wants-to-be-in-a-seekret-beta-test/">Who wants to be in a seekret beta test? There are great points across the board, but this morning we thought we'd ask you - in specific relation to <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Warhammer-Online/">Warhammer Online</a></em> - do you think that Mythic should (or should not) be opening forums at this (post-launch) stage? Perhaps you think they should limit them to only customer service and developer interaction and leave the more free-form discussions elsewhere? Or do you think that the fully-featured forums they're planning is absolutely the way to go - if only to (hopefully) have a moderated forum to discuss all things <em>WAR</em> on? <p>Linden Lab has finally finished processing the results of the <a href="http://secondlife.com/"><em>Second Life</em></a> new mentor renewal program. Starting with approximately 3,700 mentors, roughly 1,700 went through the renewal process. This far exceeded Linden Lab's expectations for renewals, which were anticipated to only range from about 350 to a little under a thousand, based on observations of volunteer activity.</p>
<p>The renewal process was officially advertised through the (admittedly unreliable) group notices system, in-world mentor meetings, and on the <a href="http://vteamblog.com/">V-Team Web-site</a>. Keeping up-to-date with one or more of these channels is now, apparently an ongoing requirement for group membership. Additionally many mentors and new-resident-support groups advertised the renewal program within groups and among friends, which appears to have led to the unexpectedly high renewal rate.</p><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/26/updates-to-second-life-volunteer-programs/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Updates to Second Life volunteer programs</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/26/updates-to-second-life-volunteer-programs/">Updates to Second Life volunteer programs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 26 Oct 2008 10:00:00 EST. What promised to be a new avenue for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE's</em></a> roleplaying community ended up being inaccessible to roleplaying alliances. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP</a> stipulated that alliances cannot enlist with factional militias, as their sheer numbers could streamroll their opposition and create overwhelming odds for the disadvantaged side in the conflict. <br /><br />The only recourse <em>EVE's</em> alliances have is to form splinter corporations outside of the alliance, for the sole purpose of allying with a given racial faction. That is, until recently. An article from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/isd">ISD Magnus Balteus,</a> one of <em>EVE Online's</em> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/20/new-edens-virtual-reporters/">in-game reporters,</a> states the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/13/eve-community-spotlight-jade-constantine/">Star Fraction alliance</a> <em>"has openly declared war on corporations that have joined the Caldari milita; the State Protectorate. <a href="http://www.soe.com">SOE</a> and the <a href="http://everquest2.station.sony.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> community are <a href="http://eq2players.station.sony.com/news_archive_content.vm?id=1839&amp;section=News&amp;locale=en_US">celebrating the ten year anniversary</a> of <a href="http://everquest.station.sony.com"><em>EverQuest</em></a>'s Guide program. Guides are folks who volunteer to provide customer support to players, as well as host in-game events. Rremember back in the day when Qeynos Hills was invaded by skeletons, and all the newbies died before higher levels came in from the Karanas to save the day? That event was the work of Guides!<br /><br />An article over at <a href="http://eq2players.station.sony.com/news_archive_content.vm?id=1839&amp;section=News&amp;locale=en_US">EverQuest II Players</a> heralds the celebration with memories from both a former and a current Guide Liaison, as well as a story by well-known Elder Guide Ozymandias honoring all the folks who have served the community over the years. The story is written like an historical lore entry. It contains a few references to legendary names that should be familiar to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest"><em>EverQuest</em></a> veterans.<br /><br />Volunteer guides are a very old tradition in MMOs. Of course there were the Wizards of the MUD era. But after that, both <a href="http://www.meridian59.com"><em>Meridian 59</em></a> and <a href="http://www.uoherald.com"><em>Ultima Online</em></a> made use of volunteer customer service and event folks too.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/12/celebrating-10-years-of-everquest-customer-service-volunteers/">Celebrating 10 years of EverQuest customer service volunteers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 12 Aug 2008 17:00:00 EST. This element of risk is what makes the game exciting, but even those who are wary of the online personas of some <em>EVE</em> players may still find themselves getting <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/31/relive-the-exploits-of-legendary-eve-online-assassins/">backstabbed and robbed,</a> or worse. Many in <em>EVE</em> have learned to profit from the misfortunes of others. However, this social environment has created certain opportunities for individuals who are able to establish their credibility over time, and through great effort. <br /><br />Among the most trustworthy in <em>EVE Online</em> is Chribba, a player who's very active in the community and provides <a href="http://omg.la/bs/">a number of services</a> to <em>EVE</em> fans, free of charge. Helped by Chribba's efforts, <em>EVE Online</em> has expanded into a game where players become auteurs, <a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp?a=channel&amp;channelID=29045">creating videos and sharing</a> their in-game pursuits with others, either for their own glory or their organization's propaganda. Of course, his contributions don't end there, as most everyone in the <em>EVE</em> community knows. Massively recently caught up with Chribba and asked him to share a bit about what he does for the <em>EVE</em> player base, and why he does it.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/30/eve-online-community-spotlight-a-qanda-with-chribba/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Online Community Spotlight: a Q&amp;A with Chribba</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/30/eve-online-community-spotlight-a-qanda-with-chribba/">EVE Online Community Spotlight: a Q&amp;A with Chribba</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 30 Jun 2008 13:30:00 EST. There were a few prominent storyline events run in tandem by the devs and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/20/new-edens-virtual-reporters/">volunteers in ISD,</a> but while such events succeeded in some respects, they failed in others. He discusses the challenges of making <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/empyrean-age"><em>The Empyrean Age</em></a> novel accessible to any fan of sci-fi, particularly those who are not familiar with the setting of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> and the serendipity of 'being at the right place at the right time.' Have a look at the TenTonHammer interview and get an idea of the universal conflict Tony Gonzales brings to readers and gamers alike in <em>The Empyrean Age.</em> If you're interested in a sneak peak before the <a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&amp;threadID=781268">June 19 release date,</a> TenTonHammer also has <a href="http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/34967">an excerpt from the novel</a> at their site. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.eve-online.com/news/newsOfEve.asp?newsID=568">Via EVE Online</a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/13/the-empyrean-age-qanda-with-author-tony-gonzales/">The Empyrean Age Q&amp;A with author Tony Gonzales</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 13 Jun 2008 20:00:00 EST. They're injecting the coming struggle with as much gritty realism as they can muster. Massively has already covered the formation of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online's</em></a> in-game news organization, called <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/20/new-edens-virtual-reporters/">Interstellar Correspondents</a>, but it looks like the staff at <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a> is setting their sites a bit higher. <br /><br />In a recent dev blog, CCP Ginger discussed <a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=565">the concept of embedded reporting</a> in New Eden. Specifically, there will be war correspondents who report on the events that transpire during the clashes between factions. These members of Interstellar Correspondents will be in the thick of the action and report on world shaping events to the populace of New Eden.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/10/eve-onlines-war-journalists-report-from-the-front-lines/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Online's war journalists report from the front lines</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/10/eve-onlines-war-journalists-report-from-the-front-lines/">EVE Online's war journalists report from the front lines</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 10 Jun 2008 16:30:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom">Funcom</a> posted <a href="http://forums.ageofconan.com/showthread.php?p=1929049#post1929049">a bulletin</a> seeking volunteers to moderate the<a href="http://forums.ageofconan.com"> official <em>Age of Conan</em> forums.</a> The game will be <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/06/aoc-account-registration-begins-for-pre-order-customers/">launching in just over a week,</a> so if you're a particularly passionate member of its community, this is probably a good time to jump on board.<br /><br />All you need: strong English language skills, an infraction-free couple of months of history on the <em>AoC</em> forums, "organization skills," and a little bit of forum moderation experience. It's too bad it's not a paying gig, but there's no doubt that there are people out there who are committed enough to the game that they'll help out for free. So if you're one of those people, head on over; Funcom has provided a <a href="http://forums.ageofconan.com/showthread.php?p=1929049#post1929049">application</a> for you to fill out.<br /><br />Just don't be too shocked when you end up spending hours every day battling level 80 elite <a href="http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=troll">trolls.</a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/10/funcom-seeks-volunteer-forum-moderators/">Funcom seeks volunteer forum moderators</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 10 May 2008 15:00:00 EST. Although there are already a number of <a href="http://www.eve-wiki.net/index.php?title=Main_Page">sources</a> of <em>EVE</em>-related <a href="http://eve.grismar.net/wikka.php?wakka=WikiHome">information</a> available to players, the EVElopedia is CCP-sanctioned. The woefully outdated <a href="http://www.eve-online.com/itemdatabase/EN/">item database</a> will be revamped through this project, and numerous player resources will be added, essentially creating a <a href="http://www.wikipedia.org">Wikipedia</a> for the <em>EVE</em> universe.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/20/the-wikipedia-of-eve-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Wikipedia of EVE Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/20/the-wikipedia-of-eve-online/">The Wikipedia of EVE Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 20 Apr 2008 20:00:00 EST.
