Warning: This week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/behind-the-mask/">Behind the Mask</a> column contains a spoilers for the plot of Vibora Bay, <a href="http://champions-online.com"><em>Champions Online</em>'s</a> endgame zone.<br />
<br />
After completing the Vibora Bay Crisis, you realize you've got a lot of work cut out for you. That sexy minx Valerian seduced you into playing into her hands, and you royally screwed up. Now it's time to get down to business, undo all the mess you made and make things right.<br />
<br />
At the end of all the plots and careful unraveling of Therakiel's well-laid plans, there's still the big bad fallen angel himself. He's no pushover, and he still has the support of Vibora's gangs.<br />
<br />
You've done all of Caliburn's errand-boy work so he can save the day -- better make sure he doesn't screw it up.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/09/behind-the-mask-a-complete-guide-to-angel-slaying-volume-one/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Behind the Mask: A complete guide to angel-slaying, volume one</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/09/behind-the-mask-a-complete-guide-to-angel-slaying-volume-one/">Behind the Mask: A complete guide to angel-slaying, volume one</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 09 Jun 2011 14:00:00 EST. Before we get into today's discussion on the merits of <a href="http://champions-online.com"><em>Champions Online's</em></a> lore, I want to do a quick brief on the pet pass and the Demonflame update for those not hounding the forums. Demonflame is a little under a week away on PTS and about two weeks on live; you can get the skinny from Poz <a href="http://forums.champions-online.com/showthread.php?t=116240">here</a>. The <a href="http://forums.champions-online.com/showthread.php?p=1677207">pet patch</a> is currently on PTS, and it's not bad, but it still needs some work. If you're interested at all in bashing out pets I strongly advise getting on PTS, going to the boards and dropping some feedback. A few other things have been tweaked too.<br />
<br />
This week on <a href="http://massively.com/tag/behind-the-mask">Behind the Mask</a>, we're going to talk about lore. I'm not talking about the game's lore, although I'll cover some of that too. I'm talking about the book lore! I finally gave in and picked up the PDFs (you can buy them from the <a href="http://www.herogames.com/home.htm">Hero Games</a> website), and I browsed through a lot of the lore content. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised.<br />
<br />
Most of the content in <a href="http://massively.com/tag/champions-online"><em>Champions Online</em></a> consists of parodies of comic and MMO culture, and those elements dilute the serious and interesting lore content that is available. If you've read the lore entries that you can find throughout <em>CO</em>, you'll find that most of them actually sound kind of cool. Unfortunately, that lore is scattered and doesn't show a lot of the big picture.<br />
<br />
Fortunately, I blew a ton of cash on PDFs (including even the rulebooks) to get a good sense of the game's lore.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/23/behind-the-mask-six-editions-of-legacy-cant-be-all-bad/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Behind the Mask: Six editions of legacy can't be all bad</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/23/behind-the-mask-six-editions-of-legacy-cant-be-all-bad/">Behind the Mask: Six editions of legacy can't be all bad</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 13:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.champions-online.com"><em>Champions Online</em></a>, like any game developed by a smaller studio, is fundamentally produced by people who enjoy the game that they're making. So it's not exactly surprising when they decide to host a night for players to play directly with the development team. They've run a few in the past, but this time they'll be taking on <a href="http://www.champions-online.com/node/594955">the largest new piece of content in the game at the moment</a>: the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/09/champions-online-expansion-is-now-free/">still-infamous mini-expansion in Vibora Bay</a>.<br />
<br />
A couple of players are a bit surprised in the discussion thread that the developers are opting for PvE content rather than the PvP nights that had been fairly well-established. <a href="http://forums.champions-online.com/showpost.php?p=1544114&amp;postcount=10">An official response</a> was quick to come, explaining that while the developers also like the PvP encounters, they want to get a chance to play with the members of the community not necessarily interested in the PvP side of things. <a href="http://www.champions-online.com/node/594955">The event</a> will be running from 4 PM to 7PM PST (7 PM to 10 PM EST), making it an excellent chance for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Champions-Online/"><em>Champions Online</em></a> players to enjoy the game on Friday night with the team behind it.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/04/28/friday-nights-all-right-for-fighting-with-champions-online-deve/">Friday night's all right for fighting with Champions Online developers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 28 Apr 2010 18:00:00 EST. One of the common statements made among the newer MMO generation is the idea that a game "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/22/attacking-the-holy-trinity-of-mmos/">abolishes the holy trinity</a>." It's the idea that their game has evolved to the point where labels like "tank," healer," and "damage dealer" aren't as relevant when talking about a character. This idea isn't particularly new -- the first big RPG with mass online support to break this trend was probably <a href="http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/games/d2/"><em>Diablo 2</em></a>, which actually predates most of the mass-market MMORPGs available today.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://champions-online.com"><em>Champions Online</em></a> definitely takes a step in this direction. In fact, it was <a href="http://forums.champions-online.com/showthread.php?t=102883">a suggestion on the forums</a> and the overwhelming player response against the holy trinity that gave me the idea to write this in the first place. <a href="http://massively.com/tag/champions-online"><em>Champions</em></a> is very solo-friendly, and a character can build to be pretty self-sufficient -- one can build for tanking, damage dealing, and self-healing all in the same package. This lends some pretty big weights to the idea that the holy trinity is a thing of the past.<br />
<br />
But <em>Champions Online</em> has a few things in its design that maintain the "Holy Trinity" design concept. Hit the jump, and I'll talk about why, contrary to popular belief, I think that keeping the holy trinity around is a good thing.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/04/01/behind-the-mask-finding-the-holy-trinity/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Behind the Mask: Finding the Holy Trinity</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/04/01/behind-the-mask-finding-the-holy-trinity/">Behind the Mask: Finding the Holy Trinity</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 01 Apr 2010 13:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.champions-online.com"><em>Champions Online's</em></a> upcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Revelation/">Revelation</a> update is coming very soon and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic">Cryptic's</a> answered a bunch of (somewhat random) community questions regarding the substantial free content add-on. We're not sure if there was any kind of theme to this Q&amp;A other than, "Hey, what would you like to know about Revelation?" Perhaps there were a couple people dressed up a vampires, in spirit of the new zone <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Vibora-Bay/">Vibora Bay</a>, but that's a somewhat commonplace thing nowadays -- vampires, we mean.<br />
<br />
Before we spin-out into a crazy off-topic rant about kids and their vampire <em>tendencies</em>, we'd like to point out that it sounds as if Cryptic is moving towards a more staggered update approach. Instead of spending six months creating one big update, they're looking to push out smaller chunks of content on a more frequent basis. They haven't specified whether that means every month or every few months, but we do know some new missions with longer storylines are coming -- as is some low-level experience curve smoothing. There was quite a stir when <a href="http://www.champions-online.com"><em>Champions Online</em></a> first announced their new region of Vibora Bay, with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/27/players-miffed-over-champions-onlines-kitchen-sink-patch-and/">a lot of negative feelings getting voiced</a>. That was mollified when <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/09/champions-online-expansion-is-now-free/">it transformed into its current form</a> as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/24/massively-interviews-bill-roper-on-champions-onlines-revelation/"><em>Champions Online: Revelation</em></a>, a mini-expansion free to all players of the game promising a new area, new enemies, and new plots to uncover. The wait is nearly over, and that means all the joy of testing out the new features before they go live, as the game has just announced <a href="http://www.champions-online.com/node/594876">a special playtest event</a> with the development team on Thursday, March 11th.<br />
<br />
Running from 4-7 PM PST (that's 1-4 PM EST for those on the opposite coast), the event will (understandably) be taking place on the public test server. It's a chance both to hang out with the dev team and get an idea of what the new area will play like, with the added bonus of knowing that the people who know the area inside and out will be right there for any questions. Keep your eyes open for <a href="http://www.champions-online.com/node/594876">the event</a>, as <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Champions-Online/">Champions Online</a></em> will no doubt have quite a bit to reveal during the test.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/09/champions-online-gearing-up-for-revelation-playtest/">Champions Online gearing up for Revelation playtest</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 09 Mar 2010 11:00:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.champions-online.com/revelation">hub page for <em>Champions Online's</em> upcoming <em>Revelation</em></a> update is live, detailing quite a bit of both the crunchy and fluffy information regarding the game. Players should be happy to finally have some new level 37-40 content in the new Vibora Bay zone, which has fallen under the control of the demon/angel Therakiel. And even if you don't have a hero that high, the new costume parts will bring some fresh content for all.<br />
<br />
We think the new zone looks pretty good, especially since it's a much darker color palette than the rest of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Champions-Online/"><em>Champions Online</em></a>. The addition of five new enemy groups should also help inject some more variety into the game. Lastly, the new cast of NPC heroes and villains look quite promising -- <a href="http://files.champions-online.com.s3.amazonaws.com/img/revelation/gangs/co_concept_full_juryrig.jpg">especially Juryrig</a>, an almost "Junkpunk" looking cyborg dude.<br />
<br />

A lot of upset has <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/27/players-miffed-over-champions-onlines-kitchen-sink-patch-and/">been swirling around</a> the <a href="http://www.champions-online.com"><em>Champions Online</em></a> community lately. Much of it has been due to the announcement of a paid zone expansion and implementation of a "Kitchen Sink" patch that was pushed out too soon. In an effort to heal wounds and correct mistakes, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic-Studios">Cryptic</a> <a href="http://forums.champions-online.com/showthread.php?p=1468539">has released a new State of the Game</a> targeted at addressing player concerns.<br />
<br />
There are a couple big things to take away from this news. For one, <strong>the expansion is now completely free</strong>. It's also now <a href="http://www.champions-online.com/node/594840">known as <em>Champions Online - Revelation</em></a> and is due out in mid-March 2010. New play areas, new powers, new rewards, and greater challenges are all promised by Cryptic. Expect a tidal wave of screenshots, videos, interviews and sweet juicy information in the coming weeks.<br />
<br />
The other big change is the way in which the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Champions-Online/"><em>Champions Online</em></a> team is interacting with the community. They're adding a bevy of new features and community events -- like a Cryptic Studios Supergroup in-game -- that should help open up the lines of communication and hopefully add some much needed transparency to the game.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/champions-online-revelation/">Champions Online: Revelation</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/champions-online-revelation/#2747335"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/02/coscreen02051004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/champions-online-revelation/#2693176"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/02/corevelationscreen02081023_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/champions-online-revelation/#2693179"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/02/corevelationscreen20810222346523df3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/champions-online-revelation/#2747324"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/02/coscreen02051001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/champions-online-revelation/#2747325"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/02/coscreen02051002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/09/champions-online-expansion-is-now-free/">Champions Online expansion is now free</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 09 Feb 2010 22:25:00 EST. So, wow, what a set the last week and a half has been. There seems to be a very strong theme going on in my inbox recently, and that's, without a doubt, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic-studios">Cryptic Studios</a>. I've read unflattering comments about my integrity as a journalist, the usual statements of how this site is Cryptic's lapdog due to all of the <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> and <a href="http://www.championsonline.com"><em>Champions Online</em></a> coverage, and, even more oddly, people want to know my opinion of Cryptic's recent actions -- specifically <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online">Star Trek Online</a></em> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/vibora-bay">Vibora Bay</a>.<br />
<br />
Well, I was never one to shirk from the truth. I've been wanting to give my personal opinion on these events since Vibora Bay hit, so I might as well dedicate this column to my evaluation of Cryptic Studios. But, before we get to Cryptic, I have a few ground rules that I want to go over with you guys. Some facts that I'd like to set straight for, oh, I dunno, the fifth time.<br type="_moz" /><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/04/anti-aliased-a-cryptic-opinion/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Anti-Aliased: A Cryptic opinion</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/04/anti-aliased-a-cryptic-opinion/">Anti-Aliased: A Cryptic opinion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 04 Feb 2010 18:00:00 EST. Today, <a href="http://forums.champions-online.com/showthread.php?t=99523">Cryptic_Stormshade confirmed</a> what the <em><a href="http://www.champions-online.com">Champions Online</a></em> community <a href="http://forums.champions-online.com/showthread.php?t=99488">was speculating on</a> since the early morning hours -- that Cryptic_Daeke, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/champions-online"><em>Champions Online</em></a> community manager, has parted ways with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic-studios">Cryptic Studios</a>.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/daeke">David "Daeke" Bass</a>'s leaving comes amidst heavy fire from the community on Cryptic's most recent endeavor, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/27/players-miffed-over-champions-onlines-kitchen-sink-patch-and/">addition of Vibora Bay</a> in <em>Champions Online</em>. Daeke was the first member of the Cryptic staff to acknowledge that Vibora Bay <a href="http://forums.champions-online.com/showpost.php?p=1447669&amp;postcount=5">would be a piece of paid content</a>, and not a free patch to the game.<br />
<br />
The switch in community managers is sudden and unexpected, leaving many in the <em>Champions Online</em> community wondering if this event and Vibora Bay's announcement are somehow related. Stormshade, however, has declined to speak any further on Daeke's departure, simply stating, "<em>Daeke has moved on to other things. Stormshade has now stepped away from <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> to become the new CM for <em>Champions</em>. We here at Massively would also like to take the time to wish Daeke the best and luck with whatever he pursues next.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/03/community-manager-daeke-leaves-cryptic-stormshade-to-replace-him/">Community manager Daeke leaves Cryptic, Stormshade to replace him</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 03 Feb 2010 20:00:00 EST. It's an awkward time for <em><a href="http://www.champions-online.com">Champions Online</a></em>. After <a href="http://forums.champions-online.com/showthread.php?t=98537">the last State of the Game post</a> by Chronomancer, things were looking up. <a href="http://www.champions-online.com/node/594825">The latest patch</a> was slated to fix Lemuria (colloquially known as Lagmuria, due to the extreme system hiccups), add more power to various power frameworks, nemesis changes, the addition of team looting, and changes to the crafting system. Furthermore, the same State of the Game post announced that <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/champions-online">Champions</a></em> would be getting its first expansion -- <a href="http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php/63202-Vibora-Bay">Vibora Bay</a>.<br />
<br />
However, with the deployment of the "kitchen sink" patch, most gamers have experienced more lag in all zones, some characters are locked in Lemuria, unable to log in, and there are issues with the crafting systems. If all of that wasn't bad enough, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/daeke">Cryptic Daeke</a> has confirmed that <a href="http://forums.champions-online.com/showpost.php?p=1447669&amp;postcount=5">Vibora Bay will be a "paid expansion"</a> which will add more content for levels 37 to 40 -- a move which has sent many members of the community into what can only be described as "a frothing rage."<br type="_moz" /><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/27/players-miffed-over-champions-onlines-kitchen-sink-patch-and/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Players miffed over Champions Online's "kitchen sink patch" and Vibora Bay</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/27/players-miffed-over-champions-onlines-kitchen-sink-patch-and/">Players miffed over Champions Online's "kitchen sink patch" and Vibora Bay</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 27 Jan 2010 18:30:00 EST.
