Greetings barbaric faithful, and welcome to another installment of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-anvil-of-crom">Anvil of Crom</a>. In between bouts of getting frustrated with the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/26/the-anvil-of-crom-extra-an-exclusive-look-at-the-isle-of-the-ir/">Isle of the Iron Statues</a> dungeon this week (I know, I know, it's sooooo easy, and how bad can I be if I have trouble with it?!), I've been giving a fair amount of thought to <a href="http://ageofconan.com"><em>Age of Conan's</em></a> free-to-play experiment.<br />
<br />
It's been nearly four months since the devs rolled out the freemium <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/aoc-unchained">Unchained</a> patch, and that's ample time for me to have formed a few opinions (and to have revised a few others). Join me after the cut for some discussion on what works, what doesn't, and what I hope to see going forward.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/30/the-anvil-of-crom-a-four-month-f2p-report-card/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Anvil of Crom: A four-month F2P report card</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/30/the-anvil-of-crom-a-four-month-f2p-report-card/">The Anvil of Crom: A four-month F2P report card</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 30 Oct 2011 12:00:00 EST. <em>The Game Archaeologist is your spunky Tuesday column devoted to exploring the MMORPGs of yesterday.<br />
</em><br />
Enough is enough! No more <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/04/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-ultima-prize-the-history/">looking back at history</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/11/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-ultima-prize-the-players/">talking to the players who have been there</a>, or even <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/18/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-ultima-prize-richard-garriott/">chatting up the creator of the game</a> -- it was time for the Game Archaeologist to man up and play <a href="http://www.uoherald.com/"><em>Ultima Online</em></a> himself. And so it was with trembling fingers and steely eyes that I downloaded the trial client and entered the game for the very first time.<br />
<br />
I will be honest and admit to a degree of nervousness. It's one thing to talk about a great MMO legend; it's another entirely to experience it first-hand. I didn't really know what to expect -- would it be so hardcore that I'd die before I finished? Would it be so ancient, so creaky that I wouldn't be able to figure it out without a degree in assembly code? Would it... be fun?<br />
<br />
Fortunately, I was not alone in this journey, as <a href="http://westkarana.com/index.php/2010/05/20/ultima-online-a-classic-experience/">Tipa from West Karana</a> graciously agreed to accompany me for an evening full of Ultimas and Onlines. Oh, the spellchecker simply did not like that one. Tough noogies. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/ultima-online"><em>Ultima Online</em></a> has a nice <a href="http://www.uoherald.com/trial/">14-day unlimited trial</a> that doesn't even require a credit card to access, so after a few minutes of patching (<em>UO</em> is tiny compared to many modern MMOs), we were in. And completely, utterly lost.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/25/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-ultima-prize-my-journey/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist and the Ultima Prize: My journey</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/25/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-ultima-prize-my-journey/">The Game Archaeologist and the Ultima Prize: My journey</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 25 May 2010 12:00:00 EST. As March winds down to a close, the <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com/"><em>WAR</em></a> continues -- and Mythic producer Carrie Gouskos steps up to rally the troops behind a few juicy, if tantalizingly vague, quality of life improvements coming in the 1.3.5 patch. Take my hand, Dorothy, for it's dyes, scenarios, Marauders and minimaps, oh my!<br />
<br />
Following <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online/"><em>Warhammer Online's</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/23/war-1-3-4-patch-live-brings-scenario-and-city-siege-enhancement/">patch 1.3.4</a>, the team has kept a close eye on the PvP scenarios, and while they are happy overall, the plague of player /AFK's have taken their toll. Carrie promises that they are <em>"actively investigating a solution for this problem."</em> She also highlighted the improved communication efforts of the team, as seen on <a href="http://forums.warhammeronline.com/warhammer/board?board.id=dev_discussions">the official Dev Discussions forum</a>.<br />
<br />
Small but attractive improvements are in store for <em>WAR's</em> 1.3.5 patch, including a sharper look for armor dyes, "gutters" for the minimap to show off-map objective directions, and dual wielding for the mutated Marauder class.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/31/warhammer-online-producers-letter-teases-1-3-5-improvements/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Warhammer Online Producer's Letter teases 1.3.5 improvements</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/31/warhammer-online-producers-letter-teases-1-3-5-improvements/">Warhammer Online Producer's Letter teases 1.3.5 improvements</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 31 Mar 2010 10:00:00 EST. You're all our friends here on Massively, or at least we'd like to think so. That's why we're doing what friends who play <em><a href="http://www.globalagendagame.com/">Global Agenda</a> </em>do for their friends who are curious about the game but don't want to commit. We're sending you along to the link to <a href="http://www.globalagendagame.com/gafriend/">sign up for a free trial to the game</a> that lets you experience how the game runs for... well... as long as you'd like. Once you have the trial, you have it forever. You can see why <a href="http://www.hirezstudios.com/">Hi-Rez Studios</a> is encouraging people to tell their friends not yet in the game to take a look.<br />
<br />
Of course, their are limitations -- specifically, there are a limited number of trials available, meaning that if you're interested you need to sign up by April 1st. There are also level and content restrictions, as detailed <a href="http://hi-rez.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/163">by the official disclaimer</a>. But none of that should stop the people curious about how the game plays out from signing up in hopes of getting in for free. If there's one thing we've heard over in over in comments about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Global-Agenda/"><em>Global Agenda</em></a>'s <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/02/global-agenda-introduces-first-patch/">rapid</a>-<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/09/global-agenda-drops-patch-1-2-to-the-test-servers/">fire</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/23/the-sandstorm-cometh-to-global-agenda/">patches</a>, it's the want for a trial -- <a href="http://www.globalagendagame.com/gafriend/">and here it is</a>. Isn't that friendly?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/25/global-agenda-offering-free-trials/">Global Agenda offering free trials</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 25 Mar 2010 20:00:00 EST. Free trials can be... stressful. We recently even <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/21/making-the-most-of-the-free-trial-period/">had a piece</a> about trying to make the most of the limited time in them, if the point must be stressed. That's no doubt the reason why several companies have begun moving away from unlimited access for a brief time, and started to spread their trials out for as long as the player wishes. <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a>, <a href="http://www.champions-online.com"><em>Champions Online</em></a>, <a href="http://www.freerealms.com"><em>Free Realms</em></a>, and <a href="http://www.alganon.com"><em>Alganon</em></a> all allow players a chance to try a limited portion of the game for as long as they want. And for someone without a lot of time, it's a perfect way to expand your window of playtime.<br />
<br />
Of course, if you've got plenty of time to devote to the trial, it's a bit obnoxious to hit a hard limit before having really gotten to explore the meat of the game at all. For some players, the fact that they're giving away the starting area or first few levels tends to imply they're not good enough to pay for in the first place. Do you find unlimited free trials more tempting or less than the traditional model? Or do you see it as a sign that the game is in trouble or otherwise undesirable?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/23/the-daily-grind-are-unlimited-trials-more-tempting/">The Daily Grind: Are unlimited trials more tempting?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 23 Dec 2009 08:00:00 EST. These days, with so many different MMOs on the market, several companies are trying <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/21/making-the-most-of-the-free-trial-period/">new, varied formats for their trials</a> in an attempt to capture the most players. You really can't blame them for feeling the need to shift from the traditional models. With our busy lives, an old-school 10-day trial may actually only net a few hours of actual uninterrupted time for many casual players -- especially during the busy holiday season! Enter <a href="http://www.alganon.com"><em>Alganon</em></a>'s new trial format to give players who are curious a chance to try the game for as long as they need to. However, it's not exactly like the other examples currently on the market. <br /><br />As you probably already know, <a href="http://champions-online.com"><em>Champions Online</em></a> and <a href="http://warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a> (<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/03/free-realms-to-introduce-new-job-pets-player-housing-and-more/">among others</a>) employ <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/22/champions-online-launches-new-demo-program/">level-restricted</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/06/warhammer-onlines-endless-trial-now-available/">trials</a>, allowing players unlimited time, but not unlimited access to the world. By contrast, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Alganon/">Alganon</a></em> isn't limiting people on the trial to a specific level. Indeed -- players can level as high up as they can, to the game's current cap. The catch is that at 30 days, your character starts <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oj8RIEQH7zA">pining for the fjords</a> and is deleted if you don't convert that trial over to a paid account. If you level very fast and don't mind the idea of having to reroll once a month, this could be an interesting way to explore the content in Alganon for some time without paying anything. That said, there are other drawbacks to dissuade players from doing that; limitations on crafting; inability to freely chat; only able to take skills to level 3 among others. Overall we still think this is an interesting new tactic for an MMO trial system. <br /><br />[Thanks Robert &amp; Jason!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/22/alganon-tries-something-new-for-trial-accounts/">Alganon tries something new for trial accounts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 22 Dec 2009 20:00:00 EST. Users who participate in this "unlimited free trial" will have the option to upgrade to a subscription based account in one of two flavors -- a 4.99 a month subscription or a 9.99 a month version. The difference between these two subscriptions comes down to customization, number of available skill slots, and the speed of experience gain.<br /><br />So what about those people who paid the 40 dollars for the software? Well, you'll be getting an "Original Gangster" tag and icon for your character, a third free month of the 9.99 subscription plan, exclusive access to upcoming content, and more unannounced in-game items.</div>
