But the majority of MMO clients are PC only, requiring Mac users to turn to <a href="http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/bootcamp.html">Boot Camp</a> and dual boot Windows XP or Vista. Another option open to MMO players who use Macs is CrossOver from <a href="http://www.codeweavers.com/">Codeweavers</a>, which allows virtualization of PC programs and games within OS X (and Linux), with no Windows license required.<br /><br />Our friends over at <a href="http://www.tuaw.com">TUAW</a> came across a one-day price reduction on CrossOver... <a href="http://www.codeweavers.com/about/general/press/20081027/">that price being 'free'</a>. That's right, all of Codeweavers' products --<a href="http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxmac/"> CrossOver Mac</a>, <a href="http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxgames/">CrossOver Games</a>, and <a href="http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxlinux/">CrossOver Linux</a> -- will be free on Tuesday, October 28, but only for that day. There's a bit of a story behind this, which you can <a href="http://www.tuaw.com/2008/10/27/codeweavers-says-cheap-gas-free-software-tomorrow/ ">read all about over at TUAW</a>, who have all of the details and restrictions related to this offer. But for MMO gamers who are into their Macs, all you really need to know is that CrossOver will allow you to play quite a number of games, MMO and otherwise. Check out the <a href="http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/group/?app_parent=4100">full list of games supported</a>, and get ready to download your free copy. Your 24-hour window to get CrossOver begins at midnight on Tuesday, October 28th. The CrossOver deal is a $40 license giveaway, limited to one license per person, and requires an Intel Mac running either Tiger or Leopard.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/27/crossover-allows-mmo-gameplay-on-mac-free-tuesday-only/">CrossOver allows MMO gameplay on Mac, free Tuesday only</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 27 Oct 2008 19:00:00 EST. Wait, did we say applications? I certainly meant games -- Apple (which is not, as of late, known for their gaming prowess) had <a href="http://www.tuaw.com/2008/03/06/apple-shows-off-iphone-gaming-chops/">EA and other game companies</a> appear on stage to show off what kind of games <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/06/spore-touch-fighter-shown-on-iphone/">can be based on the platform</a>. I also spend some of my time blogging on <a href="http://www.tuaw.com/">TUAW</a>, which is Weblogs, Inc's Apple blog, and I went on record there a while ago saying that the iPhone is the <a href="http://www.tuaw.com/2008/01/08/ea-mobile-prez-iphone-is-hurting-mobile-game-development/">best handheld gaming device ever</a>. Given what we saw today (along with the fact that programmers will have access to the gadget's multitouch, accelerometer, and even microphone and camera features), I believe that more than ever -- all we need is some games to play on it.<br /><br />So what does this all mean for massively multiplayer games? Lots.<br /><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/06/mmos-and-the-iphone-sdk/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>MMOs and the iPhone SDK</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/06/mmos-and-the-iphone-sdk/">MMOs and the iPhone SDK</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 06 Mar 2008 21:30:00 EST. My G5 doesn't show a dramatic increase in speed in <em>Second Life</em>, unlike the increases reported on <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/02/11/mac-os-x-10-5-2-brings-big-fps-gains/">WOW Insider</a> and <a href="http://www.tuaw.com/2008/02/11/10-5-2-makes-your-wow-go-faster-publish-after-8-30pm-please/">TUAW</a> for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>World of Warcraft </em></a>with 10.5.2, but is running about 5% faster in the places I know and test regularly. People on newer machines are reporting bigger increases in speed as well as improved stability. About time too!<br /><br />[For the biologists out there, I know it's a cheetah, not a leopard, but finding good images of fast moving leopards is hard!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/12/macbookpro-fix-for-second-life-at-long-last/">MacBookPro fix for Second Life at long last?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 12 Feb 2008 12:01:00 EST.
