<em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Tribes-Ascend/">Tribes: Ascend</a></em> has finally launched, and that means players everywhere can experience the simple joy of logging in, gearing up, and then skiing at high velocity across the ground while firing explosive munitions at distant targets. All right, maybe that joy isn't quite as simple, but the point remains that the game has successfully cleared its beta test. And what better way to celebrate that a bit belatedly than by pulling together some interesting stats on the overall beta experience?<br />
<br />
Past the cut, you'll find an official infographic tallying things like total kills, total number of flags captured, and the ever-important question of how many people met their end by falling. In a game with jetpacks and high-speed skiing, that number is a bit higher than you might otherwise think. Actually, wait a minute. When I think on it, if <a href="http://www.hirezstudios.com">Hi-Rez Studios</a>' new free-to-play sci-fi shooter were an MMO, I probably wouldn't like it as much. That's right, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/hi-rez-studios">Hi-Rez Studios'</a> frantic FPS is releasing first thing in the morning, and you're invited to join the fight.<br />
<br />
With jetpacks, skiing, and a strong lineage dating back to the original 1998 game, <em>Tribes: Ascend</em> has a lot going for it. The free-to-play title promises to bring back all of the frantic action that fans loved with a few new twists, such as a capture and hold game mode and the return of the classic map Raindance. Players will log in tomorrow to new social options as well and can test out unowned weapons in a special target practice area.<br />

I realize that any discussion of realism in MMOs can quickly devolve into absurdity, but bear with me. I was recently involved in a discussion between some guildies of mine who were extolling the virtues of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Tribes-Ascend/">Tribes: Ascend</a></em> over more realistic FPS games. "It's the jetpacks," they told me. In a realism-driven FPS, there's an emphasis on physics and gravity, but in <em>Tribes</em>, it's all about the jetpacks and learning how to fight effectively while using one. The fun of a game like that is in how awesome it is to <em>break</em> realism, not in how true-to-life it might be.<br />
<br />
Pure MMOs are no different. Many games make compromises along the spectrum of reality, especially when it comes to travel: In some games, we're grounded, forced to use a horse or our own two feet to make our way across the world; in others, we teleport via magical contraptions or leap tall buildings in a single bound. So riddle me this: When it boils down to it, what do you prefer to be the guiding principle of your MMOs -- realism or awesome?<br />

With the excitement and craziness of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pax-east-2012">PAX East</a> just a couple of days away, studios are clamoring for your attention with promises of candy and sweet, sweet previews. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/hi-rez-studios">Hi-Rez Studios</a> is no different; the company hopes that attendees will check out its booth for exclusive demos of its upcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tribes-ascend"><em>Tribes: Ascend</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/smite"><em>SMITE</em></a>.<br />

Players who visit booth 962 can check out a new preview release build of <em>Tribes: Ascend</em> before the game launches formally later this month. The demo contains a new game mode, Capture &amp; Hold, which is a fast-paced experience that requires the mastery of vehicles and teamwork. Players will also get to see the return of a classic 1998 <em>Tribes </em>map revamped for modern times: Raindance.<br />
<br />
Hi-Rez's other PAX East offering is its MOBA <em>SMITE</em>, which is in closed alpha testing. Here, attendees can choose from one of 15 deities and head out on to 5v5 battleground maps for serious smackdown. New to the public are six of these playable deities and the first look at the Fire Giant mob.<br />

<em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/TribesAscend/">Tribes: Ascend</a></em> has an open chat system that might seem unusual to players more familiar with MMORPGs than MMOFPS titles. Anyone can lay down whatever smack-talk he wants in the traditional open chat... but almost no one does. Instead, players make use of quick macros to audibly announce enemy movements, signal for aid, praise comrades, and taunt opponents. Truth is, time spent trash-talking the other side in chat is time enough for that side to shoot you in the face, so players stick to simple short-cut communication, keeping the game relatively clean of the sort of chatter that makes your eyes bleed.<br />
<br />
Roleplayers would never go for such a limited chat system, I realize, and I'm right there with them when it comes to annoyance that factional chats limit communication between, say, the opposing teams of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/World-of-Warcraft/">World of Warcraft</a></em> and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Wars-The-Old-Republic/">Star Wars: The Old Republic</a></em>. But at the same time, it's refreshing to see a streamlined chat that sticks to gameplay and isn't bogged down with Chuck Norris jokes and clever ways around the profanity filter.<br />

It's been a crazy week at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2012">GDC</a>, and though I've already gotten the skinny on both <em><a href="http://www.planetside2.com">PlanetSide 2</a></em> and <em><a href="http://www.dust514.com">DUST 514</a></em>, there's more on the way when it comes to online shooter news. Yesterday morning I headed over to the <a href="http://www.hirezstudios.com">Hi-Rez Studios</a> booth on the main show floor, where COO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/todd-harris">Todd Harris</a> had some exciting news to share with fans of the firm's <a href="http://www.tribesascend.com"><em>Tribes: Ascend</em></a> title.<br />

The free-to-play shooter will officially launch on April 12th, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/hi-rez-studios">Hi-Rez</a> has also released a new parody trailer that pays homage to <em>Dead Island</em> and shows off the perils of the dreaded "llama capture" (if you're a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tribes-ascend"><em>Tribes</em></a> newb, just know that speed equals survival when it comes to flag-grabs).<br />

Oh man, betas! There are so many nowadays that I have trouble keeping track. Not only that, but my attitude towards actual betas and "marketing" betas has softened somewhat. It used to be that I wouldn't touch a pre-release MMO with a ten foot pole. They were buggy, laggy, and frankly they spoiled my launch-day joy by wiping any progress I'd made during the testing phase.<br />
<br />
Now, though, many firms allow your beta characters to live on post-launch, and most late beta phases are more about stressing the servers and getting the game in the public eye than they are about system testing and bug reporting (which, let's face it, isn't much fun even when you're being paid).<br />
<br />
Right now I've got <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/tera"><em>TERA</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tribes-ascend"><em>Tribes: Ascend</em></a>, and a couple of other hush-hush MMO beta icons on my desktop. Today's a big day for fans of <a href="http://www.tribesascend.com"><em>Tribes: Ascend</em></a>, and it's also a big day for <a href="http://www.hirezstudios.com">Hi-Rez Studios</a>, the Atlanta-based indie firm behind the upcoming online shooter.<br />

Online shooters are a dime a dozen these days. Heck, so are MMOs. I can't get up from my computer chair for five minutes without missing some sort of PR blast about the latest, greatest gift to gamingkind.<br />

It's been a bumper week for online gaming news, with an absolute flood of new information from the world of game development. Rock Paper Shotgun gots some hands-on time with upcoming online FPS <a href="http://tribesascend.com/"><em>Tribes: Ascend</em></a> and delivered a cautious preview. <a href="http://blacklight.perfectworld.com/"><em>Blacklight: Retribution</em></a>'s massive character customisation options were detailed in a new dev diary video, adding smiley faces and rainbows (yes, rainbows) to this dark and brutal FPS. <a href="http://diablo3.com/"><em>Diablo III</em></a> opened the floodgates on news this week with details on the three artisan NPCs, news of the new Battle.Net Balance system, a new cinematic video, and the news that the unattuned runestone system has been scrapped.<br />

Enigmatic online game <em><a href="http://loco.en.alaplaya.net/">Land of Chaos Online</a></em> launches this week, blending elements of MMO and MOBA gameplay into a third-person team deathmatch. <em><a href="http://leagueoflegends.com">League of Legends'</a></em> competitive season two is underway, and this week <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/riot-games">Riot</a> launched its season two competitive gaming website with an article on all the recent major developments. <em><a href="http://heroesofnewerth.com">Heroes of Newerth</a></em> saw some interesting competitive action of its own over the weekend with some surprising upsets in the finals of the North American Star league.<br />

This week we learned that <em><a href="http://diablo3.com">Diablo III</a></em> beta testers will soon be getting a taste of the real money auction house, and fansite DiabloFans has been digging inside the game files to unearth details of the Mystic follower and her array of equipment enchantments. <em><a href="http://blacklight.perfectworld.com">Blacklight: Retribution</a></em> opened its closed beta on Thursday 1st December, and <em><a href="http://pathofexile.com">Path of Exile</a></em> received a huge patch as it draws closer to release. <em><a href="http://bloodlinechampions.com">Bloodline Champions</a></em> launched a charity pack containing a limited-edition avatar and title, with all the proceeds going to gaming charity Child's Play. <em><a href="http://riseofimmortals.com">Rise of Immortals</a></em> reveals upcoming lion immortal Kavashiir and shows off its new crystalline creep models.<br />

Welcome back to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-firing-line">The Firing Line</a>, folks. I'm still putting out a few flames from last week's how-dare-you-call-this-an-MMO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/11/the-firing-line-defining-the-mmo-shooter/">smackdown</a>, and rather than fuel that particular fire by telling you that I've been playing a lot of <a href="http://worldoftanks.com"><em>World of Tanks</em></a> (oh, did I say that?), I figured I'd take a high-level look at what's been happening with a few of the larger MMO shooters (and quasi-MMO shooters) over the last couple of weeks.<br />

Despite my best efforts, we're still stuck with lore updates and insignificant PR when it comes to <a href="http://planetside2.com"><em>PlanetSide 2</em></a>, though we did snag a few new screenshots recently. Things have also been quiet when it comes to <a href="http://globalagendagame.com"><em>Global Agenda</em></a> and a few of my other favorite titles. When I talk about MMO shooters with friends and colleagues, one of the first things mentioned is the definition of the term. Everyone knows what a shooter is (or at least what he thinks it is), and everyone knows what an MMO is (although thanks to MOBAs and the social networking explosion, the definition of the latter grows murkier by the day).<br />

What's up folks, and welcome to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-firing-line">The Firing Line</a>. We've been branching out our coverage lately, first with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/gamecolumns/">MMO-specific columns</a> and then with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/not-so-massively">Not So Massively</a> and MOBAs. Now we're doing something similar with online shooters. This genre is positively huge, and while there's a lot of room for debate in terms of what constitutes an MMO shooter, there's also no denying that all of the games hovering around the periphery of that designation are a lot of fun.<br />

I think we're all allowed our moments of pure geek squeeing when we bump into the people responsible for some of our favorite video games of yesteryear. So I had to apologize to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tramell-isaac/">Tramell Isaac</a> in advance for gushing over his work on the first two <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/fallout/"><em>Fallout</em></a> titles, games that are among my all-time favorites. He didn't seem to mind, and he spent a few minutes shooting the breeze about his favorite designs in the game -- designing Robobrain and the Vault Boy cards that accompanied the player perks.<br />
<br />
MMO fans will probably best know Isaac from his work on the original <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/planetside/"><em>PlanetSide</em></a>, a project that is near and dear to his heart. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">Sony Online Entertainment</a> brought him back on board to be the senior art director for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/planetside-2/"><em>PlanetSide 2</em></a>. This makes sense -- after all, who else would best know how to evolve the series' design than the guy who started it?<br />

Isaac was kind enough to sit down on the phone with me to talk about how <em>PlanetSide 2's </em>visuals are shaping up, following <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/27/senior-art-director-tramell-isaac-discusses-planetside-2s-aest/">his own blog post</a> on the subject. In addition to releasing a champion spotlight on Riven, Riot Games this week published new information on how minions will feature in <em>League of Legends: Dominion</em>'s point-capturing gameplay.<br />

Blizzard revealed this week that PayPal will be handling sales in <em>Diablo III</em>'s controversial real-money auction house. In preparation for opening the <em>D3</em> beta to the public, Blizzard also released a series of new class pages and a <em>Diablo III</em> skill calculator. Fans of the Tribes series will be glad to know that its online multiplayer sequel <em>Tribes: Ascend</em> has officially started accepting applications to join the upcoming closed beta.<br />

<a href="http://www.gamescom-cologne.com/en/gamescom/home/index.php">Gamescom</a> is just around the corner, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/hi-rez-studios">Hi-Rez Studios</a> is gearing up to show off two new titles at the Cologne trade show on August 17th. The makers of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/global-agenda"><em>Global Agenda</em></a> are bringing a demo version of <em>Tribes: Ascend</em> to the event and will also be unveiling <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/smite"><em>SMITE</em></a>, a MOBA announced last April that features battles between gods from various mythologies.<br />

	Your voices were heard! At least, I do hope those are <em>your</em> voices I've been hearing in my head... they are telling me to do things. And I listened. I am instructed to listen to the voices. The voices can't hurt me, right? Well, maybe not the voices themselves, but since they <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/30/cma-making-the-world-a-better-place/">chimed in on experimenting with combat</a>, I know I am about to get hurt some!</div>

This week concludes our foray into <em><a href="http://www.xsyon.com/">Xsyon</a></em> for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/choose-my-adventure">Choose My Adventure</a>, but I dare say it does not end my time there. Although the game does not fit the standard mold of MMO fare today, it has been quite enjoyable and a great change of pace. I have kept myself entertained with my adventures in-game and I still look forward to logging in each time (minus the apprehension as the combat loomed closer).<br />

There really is something to be said for creating your own world. How many of you gamers out there have just ached for a MMO game in which you could truly affect the world instead of rolling along on a predestined path that is the same for everyone? As I delve deeper into <em><a href="http://www.xsyon.com/"><em>Xsyon</em></a></em>, that is what I find -- a world where my actions have real meaning. A world where we can change not only the political and economic landscapes but the <em>literal</em> landscape.<br />
<br />
For <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/choose-my-adventure">Choose My Adventure</a> this week, you, the Massively readers, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/16/choose-my-adventure-and-so-it-began-again/">decided</a> that I shall work on my architecture skills and place a homestead (thereby allowing me to terraform). This really highlights some of the most unique features of the game. Although I dove into these new tasks with gusto, I now know why olden-day manual laborers sang songs during their work -- there is serious need of brain stimulation during long, monotonous labor. And building a new world from the ground up is seriously a long and slow process. If nothing else, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/xsyon">Xsyon</a></em> is not a game for the instant-gratification crowd. Which is all the better, in my opinion.<br />

<a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/pax-east-2011">PAX East</a> has already begun fading into memory, but there was a lot to see and do over the three days of the convention. Even if we disregard the numerous fan gatherings and community events taking place, there were an awful lot of games on the floor, with showings from MMOs that dwarfed last year's offerings. If you were lucky enough to be there, we can only hope that you had fun and got to see all of the impressive displays.<br />

Well, this week has certainly been interesting. And by <em>interesting</em>, I mean not really usual. Then again, if any of you know me very well, that really should not come as much of a surprise; normal and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/mj-guthrie">MJ</a> usually do not coexist in the same stratosphere. I am also not one to shy away from the untrodden path, and I tend to take off on my own tangents. Who needs easy when you can have <em>interesting</em>? Perhaps this quality alone made me a decent match for tackling the world of <a href="http://www.xsyon.com/"><em>Xsyon</em></a> for this round of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/choose-my-adventure">Choose My Adventure</a>. That, and a measure of patience.<br />
<br />
In my first true week of playing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/xsyon"><em>Xsyon</em></a>, I really didn't get to "play" much of anything. Not in any sense of the word that most MMO gamers would be familiar with. That isn't to say that I didn't have any fun; on the contrary, I really enjoyed the time I did get in, and I look forward to really digging my toes into that rich Tahoe soil. Well, my shovel, really.<br />

Way back in October of 2010, we broke the news that Atlanta-based <a href="http://www.hirezstudios.com/">Hi-Rez Studios</a> would be revisiting the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tribes_%28series%29"><em>Tribes</em></a> franchise in an upcoming online persistent-world shooter. At the time, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/hi-rez-studios">Hi-Rez</a> was focused on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tribes-universe"><em>Tribes: Universe</em></a>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/26/massively-exclusive-hi-rez-talks-tribes-universe/">our interview</a> with CEO and lead designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/erez-goren">Erez Goren</a> shed a bit of light on the company's followup to <a href="http://globalagendagame.com"><em>Global Agenda</em></a>.<br />

Today at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pax-east">PAX East</a>, Hi-Rez officially took the wraps off a second <em>Tribes</em> game, and <a href="http://tribesascend.com"><em>Tribes: Ascend</em></a> is set to re-introduce the venerable franchise to gamers all over the world. "<em>Before </em>Halo<em>, before </em>Modern Warfare<em>, and before </em>Battlefield<em>, there was </em>Tribes," says <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/todd-harris">Todd Harris</a>, Hi-Rez Studios COO, before going on to reveal that the new game will be available in late 2011. Hi-Rez will distribute <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tribes-ascend"><em>Tribes: Ascend</em></a> as a digital download and is targeting Windows PCs as well as the Xbox 360 for the initial release.<br />

Why a second <em>Tribes</em> title? "<em>We've had tremendous fun play-testing and realized the potential of a multiplayer-focused title ahead of </em>Tribes Universe<em>. The community has been waiting for a multiplayer shooter that is the modern successor to </em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tribes_2">T2</a><em>. </em>Tribes: Ascend<em> is that game</em>," Harris said.<br />

So my bags are packed (what exactly do you pack for an apocalypse? I vote toothbrush, regardless!) and I'm setting out for the Lake Tahoe region. Yup, our itinerary is set -- <a href="http://www.xsyon.com/"><em>Xsyon</em></a> has won the hearts of the readers for this next escapade in the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/choose-my-adventure">Choose My Adventure</a> series. I find this kind of exciting, as I grew up frequenting this area out here in the real world and look forward to seeing it represented in the game.<br />
<br />
Now, I have a confession to make: I watched <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/23/choose-my-adventure-to-boldly-go-where-no-cma-has-gone-before-e/">the vote</a> carefully. Too carefully. OK, I was obsessed with it! I don't think I can even tell you how many times I clicked refresh in one day; it was quite addicting to watch the numbers creep up as the readers cast their votes. And since six weeks of my life was on the line, I had a vested interest in the outcome. At least, that's how I tried to rationalize my maniacal refreshing. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/xsyon"><em>Xsyon</em></a> </em>commanded the lead straight off, but <a href="http://www.burningsea.com/page/home"><em>Pirates of the Burning Sea</em></a> had a good showing and maintained a solid second place throughout the contest. Four games kept running neck-and-neck: <em><a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/">DC Universe Online</a>,</em> <em><a href="http://play-earthrise.com/">Earthrise</a>,</em> <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/"><em>EVE Online</em></a>, and <a href="http://universe.lego.com/en-us/splash/default.aspx"><em>LEGO Universe</em></a>. I admit to rooting some for the underdogs as well -- each game has special and unique features I would enjoy delving into. Think about it: Can you imagine life as a LEGO? But in the end, no one could topple the promise of a vast wasteland filled with mutants and an empty canvas for players to fill in.<br />

So now that we have the setting, all we need is the character. Unlike many games, <em>Xsyon</em> demands that you pick things such as your crafting skills at character creation, so please forgive the number of polls attached to this week's article.<br />

While war itself is a hellish, nasty activity that we'd be better off without, there's always been something compelling about playing war as both kids and adults. When you strip war of death and suffering, the play version can become downright compelling as we get engrossed in tales of heroics, deep strategies, risky gambits, and clear-cut victories. It's why we invest so much time in simulating war throughout our lives -- in snowball fights, toy soldiers, laser tag, and MMOs.<br />
<br />
For the soldiers of <a href="http://planetside.station.sony.com/"><em>PlanetSide</em></a>, the war has been raging for over eight years now with no end in sight, and that's just fine with everyone involved. The game was designed to be a perpetual struggle between military forces -- not due to politics or prejudice but simply for the love of the fight.<br />
<br />
In the year or so I've been writing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-game-archaeologist/">this column</a>, I've never seen so many people come forward when asked to share their experiences with an MMO as have done for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/planetside/"><em>PlanetSide</em></a>. There's definitely something compelling and unique about this MMOFPS that's become a dear part of many gamers' memories, and I'm pleased to be sharing those stories with you today. Famous PvPer George S. Patton once said that "The object of war is not to die for your country but to make the other n00b die for his." We here at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-game-archaeologist/">Game Archaeologist</a> University applaud that line of thinking, especially when we want to be entertained. This perhaps explains the long-lasting appeal of <a href="http://planetside.station.sony.com/"><em>PlanetSide</em></a>. Another working theory is that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">Sony Online Entertainment</a> is into witchcraft.<br />

For an MMO I never gave much of a thought past "Huh, that's still around?" <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/planetside/"><em>PlanetSide's</em></a> surprised me with such a loyal -- and literate -- playerbase. Ever since starting this column, I've never received so many emails about an MMO. Memories and fearless love run strong in this community, and that intrigues me. What have I overlooked? Has <em>PlanetSide </em>proven that our ancestors' DNA contained the hybrid FPS/MMO gene, a gene that was passed down to a select group of winners?<br />

It's even more fun if we can play it with dozens (if not hundreds) of our closest friends, so we were excited to hear about the new MMOFPS that <a href="http://www.bc3000ad.com/">3000AD</a> and <a href="http://www.dereksmart.com/">Derek Smart</a> are making and will publishing through <a href="http://www.qol.com/live/">Quest Online</a>. It sounds like there will be some cool twists and unique innovations in this new title, a game called <em><a href="http://lodmmo.com">Line of Defense</a></em>, so we were happy to ask someone at the source. <br />

Earlier this week <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/23/hi-rez-studios-announces-development-of-tribes-universe-mmo/">we reported</a> on <a href="http://www.hirezstudios.com/">Hi-Rez Studios</a> acquiring the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tribes_%28series%29"><em>Tribes</em></a> license for the purposes of making a <em><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Tribes Universe</span></em> MMOFPS.  We also sat down to talk with company CEO and lead designer Erez Goren to get the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/26/massively-exclusive-hi-rez-talks-tribes-universe/">inside scoop</a> on the game.  The original announcement, as well as our interview, indicated that alpha testing would initially be restricted to level 50 <a href="http://www.globalagendagame.com"><em>Global Agenda</em></a> players.  Happily, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/hi-rez-studios">Hi-Rez</a> has opened the process up a bit, and any interested parties can <a href="http://www.tribesuniverse.com/">apply</a> at the game's official website.<br />

Alpha testing is currently scheduled to begin in early 2011, and the team is looking for experienced testers and FPS players.  "<em><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black;">Because the game will be  focused around huge battles on huge landscapes, we need a solid group of  very dedicated testers that can help us from the game's earliest stages  to validate the scalability and performance of the game, while also  helping tune and refine gameplay</span></em><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black;">," said executive producer Stewart Chisam.<br />

It's certainly not one that players were expecting, though.<br />

<a href="http://www.hirezstudios.com/">Hi-Rez Studios</a> CEO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/erez-goren">Erez Goren</a> announced today that the company is the "<em>proud new owner of the <a href="http://www.planettribes.com/">Tribes</a> franchise</em>." The company now has two teams in the studio, one devoted to <em>Tribes Universe</em>, which is expected to enter alpha testing at the beginning of 2011.<br />

While some of the community worries that this news means the end of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/global-agenda"><em>Global Agenda</em></a>, Erez is clear that Hi-Rez will continue to develop and support <em>GA</em>.
