Picture this. You're sitting in your internet spaceship, pounding space rocks or waiting for your fleet leader to assign you some hapless newb of a target. You've already caught up on the all the relevant <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> news courtesy of Massively, and you can't really spin your ship since you're not docked.<br />
<br />
What's a bored capsuleer to do?<br />
<br />
Read the latest <em>EVE</em> novel, of course. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tony-gonzales">Tony Gonzales'</a> new Templar One is now available pretty much everywhere books are sold, and in keeping with New Eden's high-tech trappings, you can pick it up in <a href="http://www.amazon.com/EVE-Templar-One-ebook/dp/B004WJQNY2/ref=tmm_kin_title_0?ie=UTF8&amp;m=AG56TWVU5XWC2">eBook</a> form if you're loathe to consume story content the old-fashioned way. The official <em>EVE</em> website has more details, as does a pre-Christmas <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;nbid=3357">blog posting</a> from the author himself.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/04/eve-templar-one-novel-now-available/">EVE Templar One novel now available</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 04 Jan 2012 14:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tony-gonzales/">Tony Gonzales</a> is set to unveil his latest <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> novel, titled <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;nbid=3357">EVE: Templar One</a>, this January 3rd. But for Gonzales, it is a bittersweet moment, as it marks his final contribution to the game world: "EVE: Templar One is a labor of love that began in 2009. For now, it is my last contribution to <em>EVE's</em> fiction as I was amongst the casualties of the recent difficult times CCP endured."<br />
<br />
EVE: Templar One should prove of particular interest to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514/"><em>DUST 514</em></a> followers, as the novel reveals the backstory of the immortal soldiers who will make up the game. Gonzales also says that it will follow up on the events of his previous book, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/13/the-empyrean-age-qanda-with-author-tony-gonzales/">EVE: The Empyrean Age</a>. Readers who want to beef up on the lore of both games will appreciate the explanations of how the immortals work and some of the many mysteries that have popped up in the <em>EVE </em>universe.<br />
<br />
Gonzales concludes the announcement of the novel's impending release with heartfelt appreciation to fans: "Your support over the years has been overwhelming, and I'll never forget it. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything."<br />
<br />
Currently the novel is available for pre-order through <a href="http://www.amazon.com/EVE-Templar-One-Tony-Gonzales/dp/0765326191">Amazon.com</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/23/eve-onlines-third-novel-dropping-ship-in-january/">EVE Online's third novel dropping ship in January</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 23 Dec 2011 09:00:00 EST. Issue 24 of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE Online</em></a>'s quarterly <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/31/eon-magazine-issue-22-tackles-incarna-surviving-the-eve-fanfest/">official magazine EON</a> hit the shelves this month, bringing a fresh dose of internet spaceships to coffee tables and bathrooms everywhere. Produced by MMM Publishing and written by a growing cast of writers from within the <em>EVE</em> community, EON provides something solid for fans of <em>EVE</em> to hold on to and acts as a snapshot in time or record of the game as it evolves. Recent big news stories and nullsec wars are detailed in each issue, along with editorial pieces, fiction, interviews and guides.<br />
<br />
The latest issue is a wormhole special, with a huge focus on 2009's incredibly successful <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/apocrypha/"><em>Apocrypha</em></a> expansion and the hidden wormhole systems it brought to <em>EVE</em>. In addition to the second part of Pottsey's background on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/19/eve-evolved-untangling-the-mystery-of-the-sleepers/">the ancient Sleeper race</a> locked away in wormhole systems, the magazine contains testflights of the four strategic cruisers produced from materials discovered in wormhole space. A fantastically insightful article on the making of <em>Apocrypha</em> also delves into the gritty details of how CCP put its entire weight behind one incredible expansion during a time of real world economic turmoil.<br />
<br />
Skip past the cut for a breakdown of everything in EON Issue 24 and my impressions from reading through it.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/23/eon-magazine-issue-24-looks-back-at-eve-onlines-apocrypha-expan/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EON Magazine issue 24 looks back at EVE Online's Apocrypha expansion</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/23/eon-magazine-issue-24-looks-back-at-eve-onlines-apocrypha-expan/">EON Magazine issue 24 looks back at EVE Online's Apocrypha expansion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 23 Jul 2011 18:00:00 EST. Development studio <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a> has been in the news a lot this year with their ambitious MMOFPS project codenamed <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514/"><em>Dust 514</em></a>. When it's released, <em>Dust</em> will actually tie into the studio's current MMO <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>. <em>Dust</em> players will hire themselves out to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> players as mercenaries, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/23/eve-evolved-dust-in-the-wind/">their combined aim being to dominate territories on a planet's surface</a>. The first steps toward this unique integration of two MMOs in the same concurrent universe came with <em>EVE Online</em>'s <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dominion/"><em>Dominion</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tyrannis/"><em>Tyrannis</em></a> expansions. <em>Dominion</em> gave <em>EVE</em> players a new Sovereignty framework, which will later be adapted to include planets as strategic points of interest. In the recent <em>Tyrannis</em> expansion, the planets of <em>EVE</em> began producing resources worthy of domination, ensuring that players will fight over them once it becomes possible.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/19/a-dust-514-novel-may-be-in-the-works/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A Dust 514 novel may be in the works</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/19/a-dust-514-novel-may-be-in-the-works/">A Dust 514 novel may be in the works</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 19 Aug 2010 16:00:00 EST. They join together or band against their rivals in alliance warfare, drug cartels, pirate organizations, and industrial powerhouses. The complex interplay of involvements that allow the game's players to establish and destroy invariably triggers cascades of drama. This is the point of the sandbox design of the game, what you do in New Eden affects other players on some level. <br /><br />For some players, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> is just about their interactions with one another and the fiction underpinning of the game is of marginal concern. While not all players choose to immerse themselves in the game's backstory, the setting is actually quite rich -- built on roughly six years' worth of lore <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/background/potw/">fleshed out in the Chronicles</a>, short stories that provide snapshots of the various levels of activity in New Eden.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/28/eve-online-novel-the-burning-life-to-focus-on-pirate-factions/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Online novel The Burning Life to focus on pirate factions</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/28/eve-online-novel-the-burning-life-to-focus-on-pirate-factions/">EVE Online novel The Burning Life to focus on pirate factions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 28 Jul 2009 17:00:00 EST. But sci-fi lends itself well to novelization as well, and in the MMO scene as it exists today, <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> is a prime example. The game's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/eve-visual-guide-the-birth-of-new-eden/">far-future setting of New Eden</a> is known for its sweeping warfare between vast empires, republics, and federations, but the game's lore has also shown there's a lot happening on a much smaller level. <br /><br />That sweeping warfare was the focus of the first <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> novel, <em>The Empyrean Age</em> written by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tony-gonzales">Tony Gonzales</a>, and this was tied in with the storyline events leading up to all-out war between the game's races. However, <em>EVE</em>'s creators <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> will be showing a different side to the game with the second novel, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/the-burning-life"><em>The Burning Life</em></a>, written by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/hjalti-danielsson">Hjalti Danielsson</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/13/the-challenges-of-storytelling-in-eve-onlines-player-driven-set/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The challenges of storytelling in EVE Online's player-driven setting</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/13/the-challenges-of-storytelling-in-eve-onlines-player-driven-set/">The challenges of storytelling in EVE Online's player-driven setting</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 13 Jul 2009 15:00:00 EST. The sci-fi novel is written by Hjalti Dan&iacute;elsson (aka <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-abraxas">CCP Abraxas</a>) who has written many of the <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/background/potw/"><em>EVE</em> Chronicles</a> -- short, gritty tales that show readers the various facets of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/eve-visual-guide-the-birth-of-new-eden/">life in New Eden</a>. <br /><br />The Chronicles have been a way of driving the game's lore forward for years, so we're wondering what to expect from The Burning Life. Could it possibly be tied in with the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/09/ccp-games-to-revamp-the-lore-of-eve-online/">new directions that CCP Games wants to take</a> with <em>EVE</em>'s lore? <br /><br />At this point we don't know have much information about the novel, or whether it will be tied in with an upcoming expansion as the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/empyrean-age"><em>Empyrean Age</em></a> novel by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tony-gonzales">Tony Gonzales</a> was in 2008. <br /><br />There are <a href="http://media.us.macmillan.com/video/olmk/fall09/Tor-Fall-09-1.pdf">paperback release dates listed for 2009</a> in North America (Tor) and 2010 in Europe (Gollancz).<br /><br /><a href="http://twitter.com/galen_druid">[Via Ga'len</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/04/new-eve-online-novel-the-burning-life-is-on-the-way/">New EVE Online novel "The Burning Life" is on the way</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 04 Jun 2009 16:00:00 EST. That backstory is coupled with the many contributions of (volunteer) in-game journalists who report both on the actions and machinations of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a>'s players and alliances, and who also write news-style fiction that helps drive the game's storylines forward. <br /><br /><em>EVE Online</em>'s Lead Writer CCP t0nyG (aka <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tony-gonzales">Tony Gonzales</a>, author of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/13/the-empyrean-age-qanda-with-author-tony-gonzales/"><em>Empyrean Age</em></a>) has made some major announcements this week regarding changes to <em>EVE</em>'s storyline and lore, in a dev blog titled "<a href="http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=655">The Rediscovered Scrolls</a>". The dev blog focuses on how CCP plans to address some of the issues players have noted in terms of the backstory and how it relates to them as '<a href="http://www.eveonline.com/background/eggers/">capsuleers</a>' in the setting of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/eve-visual-guide-the-birth-of-new-eden/">New Eden</a>, given that official fiction and lore are now being released quite frequently. Gonzales says, <em>"Unfortunately, we haven't been perfect in the execution of this effort. A balance had to be maintained between keeping the storyline fresh and dynamic while also holding fast to the core attributes of foundation material. That led to mistakes, contradictions, and general inconsistencies in the canon. We took that personally, and decided to do something about it." </em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/09/ccp-games-to-revamp-the-lore-of-eve-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CCP Games to revamp the lore of EVE Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/09/ccp-games-to-revamp-the-lore-of-eve-online/">CCP Games to revamp the lore of EVE Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 09 May 2009 12:00:00 EST. Not everyone will agree with that opinion, of course, just as not all players seek out immersion in New Eden. For those who do, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> has been building up short stories to flesh out the lore over the past six years -- <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/background/">all nicely collected on their site</a> -- gritty tales of New Eden's technological heights and moral depths. It's already led to a novel titled <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Eve-Empyrean-GollanczF-Tony-Gonzales/dp/0575080353/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1240082294&amp;sr=1-1"><em>Empyrean Age</em></a> authored by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tony-gonzales">Tony Gonzales</a>, which will hopefully lead to a follow-up work. <br /><br />Given all the attention <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a> has given to adding these dimensions and layers to the game's backstory, the truth is that <em>EVE</em> is as much a virtual setting as it is a game; as such, there's always a need to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/05/eve-evolved-storytelling-in-eve-online/">expand and refine that setting</a>. A solid backstory is important but it's equally important to <em>EVE</em>'s players to be able to interact with it, feel like they're really <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/eve-visual-guide-the-birth-of-new-eden/">a part of New Eden</a> in some way. Live events and storyline missions (quests) have been used in the past to this end. However, in the case of missions, a player's role in New Eden's story hasn't quite matched up with what many feel it could be. CCP's efforts to make <em>EVE Online</em>'s storylines more engaging is the focus of their latest dev blog, titled "<a href="http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=650">Telling Stories: Evolution of the Atlanta Content Team</a>".<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/19/telling-more-engaging-stories-in-eve-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Telling more engaging stories in EVE Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/19/telling-more-engaging-stories-in-eve-online/">Telling more engaging stories in EVE Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 19 Apr 2009 10:00:00 EST. The Sleepers, an ancient race of NPCs known for their mastery of virtual reality and cryogenics, will provide the greatest PvE challenges players have ever faced in <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span> <span style="font-style: italic;">Online</span> through their guardian drones. Their <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/23/eve-online-developer-explains-new-ai-for-the-sleeper-race/">AI is far beyond what players are used to</a> going up against in PvE. The Sleepers will have varying levels of strength and adaptation to player threats. They do seem to have a particular hatred for their creators at CCP, given their ultra-violent response to Ward's arrival at a structure the Sleeper drones constructed in space. They move in on him, dishing out *all* damage types: beams sizzle for EM and Thermal damage; warheads obliterate for Kinetic and Explosive damage. Fortunately Ward's Proteus is set up to deal with this (<span style="font-style: italic;">"I'm going to put on a GM shield extender, or when we go through there I'm going to get wasted!"</span>) making his ship virtually impossible to kill, letting us witness the Sleeper offensive in safety.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/06/massivelys-apocrypha-expansion-hands-on-the-sleepers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively's Apocrypha expansion hands-on: The Sleepers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/06/massivelys-apocrypha-expansion-hands-on-the-sleepers/">Massively's Apocrypha expansion hands-on: The Sleepers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 06 Mar 2009 17:00:00 EST. <div align="center"><strong>True Exploration</strong> <br /></div>
<br />For many <em>EVE</em> <em>Online</em> players, the <em>Apocrypha</em> expansion is the advent of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/true-exploration"><em>true exploration</em></a>. Exploration has been a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/14/eve-evolved-freeform-professions/">mini-profession in <em>EVE</em></a> for some time now, and there are a number of dedicated explorers in the game. That said, the profession has been difficult to learn and players typically go through exploration probes like kleenex, in the hope that they'll find a hidden pocket of space to exploit. Critics of exploration have pointed out that they're not truly exploring new places, simply scanning down what's just hidden to most other players. <br /><br />The <em>Apocrypha</em> expansion will bring true exploration to the game, allowing players to find and enter wormholes leading to uncharted regions of space. Roughly 2500 new solar systems await <em>EVE</em>'s explorers willing to brave the challenges within this hostile space.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/06/massivelys-apocrypha-expansion-hands-on-true-exploration/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively's Apocrypha expansion hands-on: True Exploration</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/06/massivelys-apocrypha-expansion-hands-on-true-exploration/">Massively's Apocrypha expansion hands-on: True Exploration</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 06 Mar 2009 17:00:00 EST. <br /><em>EVE</em> <em>Online</em>'s setting of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/eve-visual-guide-the-birth-of-new-eden/">New Eden is one with a rich backstory</a>, which is always being fleshed out further through regular Chronicles (<a href="http://www.eveonline.com/background/potw/archive.asp">short stories found on the game's official site</a>), video footage tied into the game's lore and, as of last year, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/13/the-empyrean-age-qanda-with-author-tony-gonzales/">brought to life in the <em>Empyrean</em> <em>Age</em> novel</a>. <br /><br />While not all players opt to delve into this aspect of the game, the content is there to immerse yourself in. The problem is that there's a disconnect between the story and gameplay because of how mission running (quests) work in <em>EVE</em> and the repetition that characterizes them.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/06/massivelys-apocrypha-expansion-hands-on-epic-mission-arcs-and/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively's Apocrypha expansion hands-on: Epic Mission Arcs and Tech III</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/06/massivelys-apocrypha-expansion-hands-on-epic-mission-arcs-and/">Massively's Apocrypha expansion hands-on: Epic Mission Arcs and Tech III</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 06 Mar 2009 17:00:00 EST. We jumped at the chance to find out more about the <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/apocrypha/index.html"><em>Apocrypha </em>expansion</a>, and Ward was kind enough to give us our own hands-on demo while answering our questions about where <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> is heading. We were pleasantly surprised to find that <em>EVE</em>'s lead writer Tony Gonzales was on hand as well. Fans of the game's backstory will know him for writing <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Eve-Empyrean-GollanczF-Tony-Gonzales/dp/0575080353">The Empyrean Age novel</a>, which chronicled the events leading up to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/eve-visual-guide-the-birth-of-new-eden/">New Eden's factional warfare</a>. <br /><br /><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/apocrypha"><span style="font-style: italic;">Apocrypha</span></a> will be the most significant expansion in <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span>'s history to date, introducing new -- and some controversial -- features while revamping existing aspects of the game. Ultimately the aim of <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a> with <span style="font-style: italic;">Apocrypha</span> is to make <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span> accessible to more gamers while adding depth for the existing playerbase. The <span style="font-style: italic;">Apocrypha</span> expansion launch will coincide with <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span> <span style="font-style: italic;">Online</span>'s retail release on March 10th. Leading up to that date, a number of the CCP developers have dropped info about what's on the way through dev blogs and the occasional interview, but the expansion seen as a whole is mind-blowing. What we have for you here is the most complete look at the <span style="font-style: italic;">Apocrypha</span> expansion offered to date, in one place, and much of it from the developers themselves. We've tackled <em>Apocrypha</em> in four parts: the New Player Experience, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/06/massivelys-apocrypha-expansion-hands-on-epic-mission-arcs-and/">Epic Mission Arcs &amp; Tech III</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/06/massivelys-apocrypha-expansion-hands-on-true-exploration/">True Exploration</a>, and the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/06/massivelys-apocrypha-expansion-hands-on-the-sleepers/">Sleepers</a>.<br /><br />Strap yourself in and get ready for Massively's exclusive hands-on with the <span style="font-style: italic;">Apocrypha</span> expansion for <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span> <span style="font-style: italic;">Online</span>.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-online-apocrypha-expansion/">EVE Online Apocrypha expansion</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-online-apocrypha-expansion/#1413058"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/03/1920x1200_minmatar_t3_wip_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-online-apocrypha-expansion/#1413059"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/03/caldari_v3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-online-apocrypha-expansion/#1413057"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/03/1920x1200_caldari_t3_wip_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-online-apocrypha-expansion/#1413169"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/03/picture-3_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-online-apocrypha-expansion/#1413167"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/03/picture-6_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/06/massivelys-eve-online-apocrypha-expansion-hands-on/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively's EVE Online Apocrypha expansion hands-on</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/06/massivelys-eve-online-apocrypha-expansion-hands-on/">Massively's EVE Online Apocrypha expansion hands-on</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 06 Mar 2009 17:00:00 EST. Simply by piloting their ships as capsuleers -- whether it's to make New Eden a safer place, or to lay waste to every unfortunate soul that crosses their path -- all <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> players assume a role of sorts. However, for those who prefer greater immersion, one of the real strengths of <em>EVE Online</em> is the depth and breadth of its backstory, which provides a gritty setting for players to delve into, should they choose to. <br /><br />The <a href="http://www.eve-online.com/background/potw/28-07-08.asp">latest <em>EVE</em> Chronicle</a> provides a look within New Eden's power structures that goes beyond the heads of the four races. "Masks of Authority" sheds more light on the corporate paradigm that governs one's life as a Caldari player in <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE,</span> a system overpowered by the Chief Executive Panel -- eight megacorporations whose collective wealth and influence makes or breaks the lives of all Caldari citizens.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/31/eve-chronicle-masks-of-authority/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Chronicle: Masks of Authority</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/31/eve-chronicle-masks-of-authority/">EVE Chronicle: Masks of Authority</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 31 Jul 2008 19:00:00 EST. <ul>
    <li>Tony Gonzales, <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE Online's</span> Lead Writer, explains that tensions built within the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/empyrean-age"><span style="font-style: italic;">Empyrean Age</span></a> novel were developed to entice both veteran and <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span> players and the 'uninitiated' science fiction fan. Gonzales also toys with the idea of writing a sequel to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/13/the-empyrean-age-qanda-with-author-tony-gonzales/">the book.</a></li>
</ul>
<ul>
    <li>Noah Ward, <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE's</span> Lead Designer, discusses the new features in Trinity 1.1: Boost Patch. Learn all about the new improvements, deadlier ships and interface renovations now available. </li>
</ul>
<ul>
    <li>Matthew Woodward, Game Designer for <span style="font-style: italic;">Empyrean Age,</span> tells us,<span style="font-style: italic;">"These new missions give players the strength of narrative."</span> New missions within Factional Warfare alter the focus from isolated PvE, taking these objectives and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/18/eve-onlines-empyrean-age-a-first-step-towards-something-great/">tying them into the sweeping story</a> found in the <span style="font-style: italic;">Empyrean Age</span> novel. </li>
</ul>
<ul>
    <li>Nathan Richardsson, Executive Producer, discusses the origins of <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE Online</span> while providing an overview of <span style="font-style: italic;">Empyrean Age's</span> features. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/16/eve-evolved-faction-warfare-unleashed/">All out war</a> was the most brutal and obvious choice for this new expansion. Was this war inevitable? Yes. Richardsson also offers his view on what makes PvP exciting and worthwhile. </li>

Features added include <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/18/rogue-signal-eves-empyrean-age-and-factional-warfare/">factional warfare</a> with a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/24/full-empyrean-age-rank-list-exhibited-in-dev-blog/">ranking</a> system, new agents, a new region of space, details on hidden deadspace complexes, and new system occupancy rules.<br /><br /><em>EVE</em>'s in-game news sources have been filled with reports of one violent diplomatic disaster after another, setting the stage for the all out war to come. In addition to those reports, CCP commissioned writer Tony Gonzales to write <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Eve-Empyrean-Age-Tony-Gonzales/dp/0575082682/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1212014701&amp;sr=8-1">a novel</a> (also titled <em>Empyrean Age</em>) that reveals in detail the back-story of the conflict.<br /><br /><em>Empyrean Age</em> is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/28/the-empyrean-age-blasts-onto-singularity/">already live</a> on <em>EVE</em>'s test server, Singularity. User reactions have been positive so far, and we suspect this update will offer plenty of satisfactory content to tide users over until the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/24/ambulation-project-closer-to-reality/">Ambulation</a> update downloads later this year.</div>
