When <em><a href="http://www.eve-online.com">EVE Online</a></em> launched in 2003, it was a barren game without many of the comforts we enjoy today. The user interface was abysmally worse than today's (if you can imagine such a thing), players with cruisers were top dog, and practically the only activities were mining or blowing up miners. The culmination of years of hard work by a small indie studio, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/">EVE Online</a></em> sold almost entirely on its future potential. When I was introduced to the game by an excited friend in early 2004 during the Castor expansion, he encouraged me to get in on the ground floor because he believed the game was going to be huge. Years later, I find myself introducing the game to thousands of readers on the same premise.<br />
<br />
<em>EVE</em>'s continual success over the years transformed a fresh-faced <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> into a multinational game development giant. And yet, for all that growth and all the updates to <em>EVE</em> over the years, the fact that the game sells largely on future potential is still firmly embedded in both players and developers. Players subscribe not only because they like the game but because they want to support development to reach <em>EVE</em>'s true potential. Two years with very little iteration on existing features <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/26/eve-evolved-the-day-that-eve-online-died/">sent the message</a> that developers weren't trying to reach that potential, but it seems that trend is soon to be completely reversed. With the newly announced <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Crucible/">Crucible</a></em> expansion, CCP will be adding countless small features, graphical updates and iterations that put <em>EVE</em> firmly back on the path to reaching its full potential.<br />
<br />
In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-evolved/">EVE Evolved</a>, I look at CCP's plans to <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/en/crucible/features/">return <em>EVE</em> to the crucible</a> and reforge it into something awesome. Those waiting for the third part of my look at the new player experience can catch that in next week's column, as Kajatta is enjoying his final week in <em>EVE</em> before delivering his verdict.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/20/eve-evolved-returning-eve-to-the-crucible/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: Returning EVE to the Crucible</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/20/eve-evolved-returning-eve-to-the-crucible/">EVE Evolved: Returning EVE to the Crucible</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 20 Nov 2011 18:00:00 EST. In years gone by, exploring the unknown far reaches of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE Online</em></a> universe meant setting a course for nullsec. With no way to install a permanent residence in the most lucrative far-off systems, players would launch dangerous expeditions into the deep with the hope of striking it rich. Nullsec was the only place to mine rare ores containing megacyte and zydrine, and piracy wasn't as common as it is today. For putting themselves at the risk of pirates, miners were rewarded with an income stream greater than that of any other profession in the game. It was a golden age in exploration that wasn't to repeat itself until March 2009's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Apocrypha/"><em>Apocrypha</em></a> expansion <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/19/eve-evolved-untangling-the-mystery-of-the-sleepers/">opened 2500 hidden wormhole systems</a> for exploitation.<br />
<br />
Things have changed considerably since those early days of <em>EVE</em>. Player-built starbases and outposts have transformed the face of nullsec, allowing alliances to build themselves an empire in the void. December 2009's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Dominion/"><em>Dominion</em></a> expansion brought a complete revamp of the nullsec sovereignty mechanics, allowing alliances to upgrade their space but dramatically increasing the cost of system ownership. Despite all of these updates and improvements, over the past several years we have somehow lost a lot of what made nullsec great in its glory days. Local industry has been replaced by risk-free logistics, and nullsec's risky but rewarding mining profession is now greatly overshadowed by safe highsec mission-running.<br />
<br />
With a new iterative nullsec revamp scheduled to begin this winter, I use this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-evolved/">EVE Evolved</a> to speculate on what can be done to bring back the glory days of nullsec industry.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/21/eve-evolved-bringing-back-the-glory-days/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: Bringing back the glory days</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/21/eve-evolved-bringing-back-the-glory-days/">EVE Evolved: Bringing back the glory days</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 21 Aug 2011 18:00:00 EST. Issue 24 of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE Online</em></a>'s quarterly <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/31/eon-magazine-issue-22-tackles-incarna-surviving-the-eve-fanfest/">official magazine EON</a> hit the shelves this month, bringing a fresh dose of internet spaceships to coffee tables and bathrooms everywhere. Produced by MMM Publishing and written by a growing cast of writers from within the <em>EVE</em> community, EON provides something solid for fans of <em>EVE</em> to hold on to and acts as a snapshot in time or record of the game as it evolves. Recent big news stories and nullsec wars are detailed in each issue, along with editorial pieces, fiction, interviews and guides.<br />
<br />
The latest issue is a wormhole special, with a huge focus on 2009's incredibly successful <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/apocrypha/"><em>Apocrypha</em></a> expansion and the hidden wormhole systems it brought to <em>EVE</em>. In addition to the second part of Pottsey's background on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/19/eve-evolved-untangling-the-mystery-of-the-sleepers/">the ancient Sleeper race</a> locked away in wormhole systems, the magazine contains testflights of the four strategic cruisers produced from materials discovered in wormhole space. A fantastically insightful article on the making of <em>Apocrypha</em> also delves into the gritty details of how CCP put its entire weight behind one incredible expansion during a time of real world economic turmoil.<br />
<br />
Skip past the cut for a breakdown of everything in EON Issue 24 and my impressions from reading through it.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/23/eon-magazine-issue-24-looks-back-at-eve-onlines-apocrypha-expan/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EON Magazine issue 24 looks back at EVE Online's Apocrypha expansion</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/23/eon-magazine-issue-24-looks-back-at-eve-onlines-apocrypha-expan/">EON Magazine issue 24 looks back at EVE Online's Apocrypha expansion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 23 Jul 2011 18:00:00 EST. In the past three weeks, I've covered the ins and outs of research in <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>, from Tech 1 blueprints and the Tech 2 invention system to Tech 3 and reverse engineering. In my nearly six years of playing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a>, I've delved into every traditional profession and picked up some valuable tips and insights on each one. Having been involved in every aspect of the Tech 1, 2 and 3 industries, I've built up a fairly complete picture of how the research portion of any industry interacts with its production lines. In this final part to the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-evolved/"><em>EVE Evolved</em></a> guide to research, I give five top tips that I consider invaluable for anyone getting into research and industry.<br />
<br />
<strong>#5 - Chasing profit:</strong><br />
To keep your profit margins high in any business, you'll need to adjust your choice of products frequently to keep up with what's recently profitable. The most important tool you'll ever have in any industry is a spreadsheet or application to calculate build costs for you. By updating the prices on your spreadsheet regularly, you can quickly spot which items are profitable to build and stay ahead of the curve. This is important because in some areas, like the market for Tech 2 modules, it can take as little as a week for an item to go from high profit to making a loss. In <em>EVE</em>'s highly competitive markets, it's the most agile players able to stay on top of market trends who make the most ISK. There are several <a href="http://www.eve-meep.com/">freely available applications and websites</a> that can help with practically every industry but I've always found it useful to make my own spreadsheets.<br />

In the first two parts of this guide to Research in <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>, I covered <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/13/eve-evolved-research-tech-1-blueprints/">the basics of Tech 1 blueprint research</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/20/eve-evolved-research-invention-and-tech-2/">the "Invention" system</a> that allows players to make their own Tech 2 blueprint copies. The reverse engineering process used to make Tech 3 blueprints is a lot like invention except with a new set of materials, equipment and skills. Though the process used to create it will be familiar to inventors, the end product is a strange beast. Unlike Tech 2, Tech 3 isn't just a straight improvement over lower tech levels and doesn't use Tech 1 or 2 as a base. Instead, it's an entirely new technology used to make <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/06/eve-evolved-tech-3-strategic-cruisers/">custom, modular ships</a>. At the moment, the only Tech 3 products we have are the modular "Strategic Cruiser" class but more is planned for future patches. Tech 3 frigates are rumoured to be next on the development table and it's entirely possible that we'll see strange new Tech 3 modules thrown into the mix too at some point.<br />
<br />
In today's part of this bumper guide to research, I look into <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a>'s newest addition to the researcher's repertoire as I examine Tech 3 and "Reverse Engineering". I'll look at how it all fits together to make a finished product, what's required to get involved and best practices for staying profitable in what has become a very competitive marketplace.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/27/eve-evolved-research-reverse-engineering-and-tech-3/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: Research: Reverse Engineering and Tech 3</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/27/eve-evolved-research-reverse-engineering-and-tech-3/">EVE Evolved: Research: Reverse Engineering and Tech 3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 27 Dec 2009 18:00:00 EST. With <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>'s <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/apocrypha/">Apocrypha</a></em> expansion came an entire new class of ship. Tech 3 Strategic Cruisers represent a new wave of technology in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a>. Rather than being simply improved versions of the existing Tech 2 ships, Strategic Cruisers are modular ships reverse engineered from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/19/eve-evolved-untangling-the-mystery-of-the-sleepers/">ancient Sleeper and Talocan components</a>. They allow players to design their own ship from a base hull and a set of five subsystems. Each subsystem has four options, with a fifth possibly in the works. Original designs called for the ship to improve as it was used, but this was replaced with a set of rank 1 skills and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/gallery/eve-strategic-cruisers/2261582/">you lose a level of one of them</a> if your ship is destroyed. A fully fit Tech 3 ship originally would have cost you upwards of two billion isk but prices have since dropped to around the 600 million mark and they're still falling. As these ships have become more affordable, I've had a chance to see some of them in action and see first hand what they can do.<br /><br />Join me in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-strategic-cruisers/">this visual gallery article</a> where I dish out some information on Strategic Cruisers and then examine a few of the different ways these ships can be fit to fulfill different roles. If you have a particularly inventive setup, feel free to post it as a comment.<br />

They're making some database changes with the next <em>Apocrypha</em> patch that should improve what you experience in your game client with inventory management, but beyond addressing "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jita">The Jita Problem</a>" there will be a fair number of changes in the next patch. <br /><br />On that topic of speed, players should notice a huge change with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pos">starbase deployment</a> (or hasty tear downs): players will be able to anchor, online, or unanchor offensive and defensive starbase structures in half the time it took previously. Perhaps more significant to some players than others, station reprocessing will be much faster -- apparently refining stacks of items will be up to 25 times faster than before. Also, some of those changes to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tech-3">Tech III</a> production <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/09/next-eve-online-patch-will-boost-tech-iii-production/">we've mentioned before</a> are going into effect on Monday, and should ultimately be a boost for Tech III. <em>Apocrypha</em> 1.3's changes extend far beyond what is mentioned here; players heavily invested in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wormhole-exploration">wormhole exploration</a> and the production it fuels should <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/updates/patchnotes.asp?patchlogID=190">look closely at the patch notes</a> to see how CCP's changes to the game might affect them.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/26/apocrypha-1.3-improvements-and-tech-iii-changes-coming-to-eve-on-monday/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Apocrypha 1.3 improvements and Tech III changes coming to EVE on Monday June 29</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/26/apocrypha-1.3-improvements-and-tech-iii-changes-coming-to-eve-on-monday/">Apocrypha 1.3 improvements and Tech III changes coming to EVE on Monday June 29</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 26 Jun 2009 20:00:00 EST. The podcast's hosts <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/crovan">Crovan</a> and Alsedrech got air time with <em>EVE</em> developers <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-tyr">CCP Tyr</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-claw">CCP Claw</a>, as well as StevieSG from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eve-tv">EVE TV</a>. In addition to dropping more info about the sixth annual Fanfest and some of the options players will have for excursions in Iceland beyond the player gathering itself (which will be October 1 - 3), they discuss the Fanfest PvP tournament. <br /><br />The Fanfest PvP tournament is a major draw to the event. The Fanfest tournament differs from the Alliance PvP Tournament (<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/12/eve-alliance-pvp-tournament-vii-details-and-changes-announced">which will be held earlier in the year</a>, in September) in some noticeable ways. Where the Alliance tournament is taken <em>very</em> seriously by most competitors who spend weeks in preparation -- after all, a substantial part of the game's playerbase are watching or listening to the event live -- the Fanfest PvP tournament is meant to allow for more impromptu, spontaneous match-ups. Indeed, some winning teams at the Fanfest tournament were comprised of virtual strangers who joined up at the last minute, and the rules can lead to some... <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/31/eve-fanfest-2008-pvp-tournament-to-be-unconventional/">unusual scenarios</a>. In keeping with this spirit of mixing it up, CCP has decided to hold free-for-all PvP matches at Fanfest 2009.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/16/eve-fanfest-pvp-tournament-to-have-free-for-all-and-tech-iii-mat/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Fanfest PvP tournament to have free-for-all and Tech III matches</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/16/eve-fanfest-pvp-tournament-to-have-free-for-all-and-tech-iii-mat/">EVE Fanfest PvP tournament to have free-for-all and Tech III matches</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 16 Jun 2009 20:00:00 EST. CCP Games' <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/events/alliances/tournament/t7/">new Alliance Tournament page</a> explains what the event is all about: "<em>The EVE Online Alliance Tournament is the ultimate battlefield in which the top pilots in EVE Online fight for the glory and honour of their alliance. 64 Alliances compete over 3 weekends of intense, explosive action, with the final weekend broadcast live via EVE TV." </em><br /><br />Last year's was tournament was a big success, with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/31/massively-interviews-crovan-about-eve-alliance-pvp-tournament-vi/">some excellent commentary on the matches</a> from members of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> playerbase and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/01/eve-pvp-tournament-assassination-machiavellian-or-bad-form/">no small amount of drama</a>. Given how well things worked out last year, the 2009 Alliance Tournament will follow the same format, but there are a few changes that <em>EVE</em> developer CCP Claw discusses in his dev blog "<a href="http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=667">How do you stop a man with seven alliance tournaments?</a>"<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/12/eve-alliance-pvp-tournament-vii-details-and-changes-announced/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Alliance PvP Tournament VII details and changes announced</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/12/eve-alliance-pvp-tournament-vii-details-and-changes-announced/">EVE Alliance PvP Tournament VII details and changes announced</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 12 Jun 2009 20:00:00 EST. The goal for many such explorers is ultimately to produce the next iteration of ship technology in the game; these <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tech-3">Tech III strategic cruisers</a> feature modular designs that can accomplish some impressive things. This, coupled with their rarity and sky high prices make Tech III ships into everybody's favorite multi-billion ISK gankmagnets, and it's that scarcity that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> game designer CCP Chronotis addresses in his latest dev blog.<br /><br />He writes that <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a> will make some changes in the next <em>Apocrypha</em> patch that will affect the supply of Tech III materials. Specifically, they're going to boost reverse engineering while also balancing out the types of salvage gained from Sleeper NPC wrecks, and increase the availability of Tech III production materials in general. If you're involved in wormhole exploration or Tech III production, consider this dev blog from CCP Chronotis a <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=661">heads up as to the changes on the way</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/09/next-eve-online-patch-will-boost-tech-iii-production/">Next EVE Online patch will boost Tech III production</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 09 Jun 2009 09:00:00 EST. The trailer depicts a cataclysmic event which creates rifts in space-time throughout <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/eve-visual-guide-the-birth-of-new-eden/">the New Eden galaxy</a>, affecting all of the races. <br /><br />We see fleets of ships investigating the anomalies and take their first journeys through wormholes, emerging in unknown space. There, the explorers find bizarre structures whose design is unknown to New Eden's races. These space stations house <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/06/massivelys-apocrypha-expansion-hands-on-epic-mission-arcs-and/">the technology behind Tech III</a>, advanced modular ship designs, but seizing technology potentially thousands of years beyond that of the capsuleers awakens long-dormant defenses: the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/06/massivelys-apocrypha-expansion-hands-on-the-sleepers/">drones of the ancient Sleeper race</a>. <br /><br />We've got the YouTube embed of the <span style="font-style: italic;">Apocrypha</span> trailer in HD for you below the cut.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/07/eve-online-apocrypha-expansion-trailer-kicks-off-storyline-event/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Online Apocrypha expansion trailer kicks off storyline events</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/07/eve-online-apocrypha-expansion-trailer-kicks-off-storyline-event/">EVE Online Apocrypha expansion trailer kicks off storyline events</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 07 Mar 2009 18:00:00 EST. <div align="center"><strong><br />Epic Mission Arcs and Lore</strong><br /></div>
<br /><em>EVE</em> <em>Online</em>'s setting of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/eve-visual-guide-the-birth-of-new-eden/">New Eden is one with a rich backstory</a>, which is always being fleshed out further through regular Chronicles (<a href="http://www.eveonline.com/background/potw/archive.asp">short stories found on the game's official site</a>), video footage tied into the game's lore and, as of last year, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/13/the-empyrean-age-qanda-with-author-tony-gonzales/">brought to life in the <em>Empyrean</em> <em>Age</em> novel</a>. <br /><br />While not all players opt to delve into this aspect of the game, the content is there to immerse yourself in. The problem is that there's a disconnect between the story and gameplay because of how mission running (quests) work in <em>EVE</em> and the repetition that characterizes them.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/06/massivelys-apocrypha-expansion-hands-on-epic-mission-arcs-and/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively's Apocrypha expansion hands-on: Epic Mission Arcs and Tech III</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/06/massivelys-apocrypha-expansion-hands-on-epic-mission-arcs-and/">Massively's Apocrypha expansion hands-on: Epic Mission Arcs and Tech III</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 06 Mar 2009 17:00:00 EST. Explorers willing to discover wormholes and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/29/eve-online-to-introduce-new-npc-race-with-apocrypha-expansion/">take the risk of engaging the Sleepers within</a> will be able to obtain some of their technology, provided they manage to survive the encounter. This could bring wealth by selling the tech outright, or reverse engineering it to create <em>EVE</em>'s <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tech-3">strategic "Tech III" cruisers</a> -- modular ship designs based in part off of Sleeper technology. <br /><br /><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> has said that the Sleepers will be unlike any NPC type that pilots in the game have ever faced, and that was no exaggeration. Their AI makes fighting these particular NPCs more like fighting other players. That is to say, they react to immediate threats and change their tactics to counter what's thrown at them, to some degree. The video embedded below (captured on the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/singularity">Singularity test server</a>) shows what the Sleepers are capable of against a mixed fleet of players -- with capital ships no less -- that had great difficulty withstanding the ancients. <br /><br />Check out the raw power of the Sleepers in fullscreen HD, with their sizzling blue beams and warheads absolutely melting battleships and any other threat that demands their attention:<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/22/video-shows-eve-onlines-sleeper-npc-race-in-action/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Video shows EVE Online's Sleeper NPC race in action</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/22/video-shows-eve-onlines-sleeper-npc-race-in-action/">Video shows EVE Online's Sleeper NPC race in action</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 22 Feb 2009 12:00:00 EST. Quite a number of <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>'s players are drawn to the crafting side of this particular sci-fi MMO, and those in large corporations and alliances have learned how their collective efforts can allow them to produce vast quantities of items and reap equally vast <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/isk">sums of ISK</a>.<br /><br /><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a>'s crafting system is also very much the backbone of the game. Almost every ship and module used by players in the game was created by another player. Those who are into the combat aspects of the game are reliant upon the producers to supply their tools of destruction, and that destruction in turn creates demand (and fuels profits) for <em>EVE</em>'s industrialists. It's an interesting bit of symbiosis (despite that animosity towards those on the other side of the fence) that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/eve-visual-guide-the-birth-of-new-eden/">keeps New Eden thriving</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/16/eve-online-developer-explains-how-to-build-tech-iii-strategic-cr/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Online developer explains how to build Tech III strategic cruisers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/16/eve-online-developer-explains-how-to-build-tech-iii-strategic-cr/">EVE Online developer explains how to build Tech III strategic cruisers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 16 Feb 2009 09:00:00 EST. Critics of the game's user interface might be surprised to learn that there is a team that focuses solely on UI, and it seems they've been quite busy with this radical layout change. Ship fitting in <em>Apocrypha</em> will be focused on an iPod-like ring where you array your modules and rigs, as well as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tech-3">subsystems for Tech III ships</a>, while viewing your ship (and how it changes) in the center. This large fitting reticle is flanked by collapsible side panels which are used for item selection and displaying ship stats. <br /><br />Browsing the hundreds (in some cases thousands) of items in the various division hangars in a given station should be easier, with collapsible sections in the left side item panel. The stats panel to the right actually provides more info about your ship setup than before, by mousing over and bringing up a pop-up box. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-fendahl">CCP Fendahl</a> addresses the fact that this is more complex than the previous system: <em>"While this increases the barrier to entry when learning how to fit a ship for the first time, we also think that the fitting screen is a critically important interface that needs to show all the relevant numbers."</em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/15/eve-dev-blog-explains-new-ship-fitting-screen-saveable-configur/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE dev blog explains new ship fitting screen, saveable configurations</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/15/eve-dev-blog-explains-new-ship-fitting-screen-saveable-configur/">EVE dev blog explains new ship fitting screen, saveable configurations</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 15 Feb 2009 18:00:00 EST. Tech III ships have been the subject of a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/08/ccp-reveals-tech-3-coming-in-eves-march-expansion/">great deal of excitement</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/09/players-skeptical-about-eve-onlines-introduction-of-tech-iii/">no small amount of trepidation</a> from the game's players. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> developer CCP Nozh introduces the playerbase to <em>"the dark delights of Tech 3 ships"</em> in his dev blog "<a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=629">Strategic Cruisers: A New Breed</a>." This moniker "Strategic Cruisers" is a fitting one, as they certainly are a new breed of ship, and one that requires some explanation. <br /><br />Nozh writes, <em>"The elation of happening upon a unique fit, some fresh and clever setup, has always been a very appealing aspect of EVE. One of our primary goals for the Tech 3 ships was to bring this customization to a whole new level. The new ships are a fundamental departure from the tried and tested, offering such unparalleled customization that discussing them on the same terms as previous ships belies their true extent -- we're talking full-fledged, independent systems within the system. A little bit scary, really." </em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/12/eve-online-developer-explains-major-new-feature-tech-iii/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Online developer explains major new feature: Tech III</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/12/eve-online-developer-explains-major-new-feature-tech-iii/">EVE Online developer explains major new feature: Tech III</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 12 Feb 2009 17:00:00 EST. Still, others remain standoffish, citing either the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/09/players-skeptical-about-eve-onlines-introduction-of-tech-iii/">potential for over-complexity</a> or "Lego in space."<br /><br />Well now it's time for speculation to fizzle out, and for the players to see what Tech III is all about firsthand. An announcement today from <em>EVE</em> dev CCP Nozh let the players know that Tech III can be experimented with on the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/singularity">Singularity test server</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/06/eve-onlines-tech-iii-ships-hit-singularity-test-server/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Online's Tech III ships hit Singularity test server</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/06/eve-onlines-tech-iii-ships-hit-singularity-test-server/">EVE Online's Tech III ships hit Singularity test server</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 06 Feb 2009 14:30:00 EST. Anyone who's run a solid week of missions knows this all too well, and the combat dynamic between players and NPCs is something <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> will start remedying in the next game expansion: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/apocrypha"><em>Apocrypha</em></a>.<em><br /><br />EVE</em> dev CCP Ytterbium's dev blog "When Evolution Leaps Forward" has some big news about what's in store for players as of March 10th in <em>Apocrypha</em>. The devs tasked with revamping the game's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/pve">PvE experience</a> are making some substantial changes to the distribution of bigger and badder NPCs. That childhood pastime of snapping together pieces to create new and often bizarre creations is coming to the spaceships of <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>, but not all players are happy to hear about this. <br /><br />The next <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> expansion, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/apocrypha"><em>Apocrypha</em></a>, is going to introduce some new aspects to gameplay. Some of these new features, like wormhole exploration, seem to be received positively by the player base. But others -- like the modular "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tech-3">Tech III</a>" ship designs -- have drawn no small amount of criticism from <em>EVE</em>'s subscribers. Tech III is an aspect of the game that has players pretty well divided, much like the upcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/walking-in-stations"><em>Walking in Stations</em></a> (aka Ambulation) expansion.<em> </em>The sentiment a number of players have been vocal about is <em> 'Do we really need this?'</em> Whines and tears are a daily occurrence on the game's official forums and perhaps the opinions voiced there aren't necessarily indicative of the sentiments of the larger player base. But concerns about Tech III are also beginning to show up on player blogs, far from the bandwagoning of the <em>EVE Online</em> forums, and in some cases from players who know the game very well.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/09/players-skeptical-about-eve-onlines-introduction-of-tech-iii/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Players skeptical about EVE Online's introduction of Tech III</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/09/players-skeptical-about-eve-onlines-introduction-of-tech-iii/">Players skeptical about EVE Online's introduction of Tech III</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 09 Jan 2009 18:00:00 EST. P&eacute;tursson</a>, CEO of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games ">CCP Games</a>, has given a rather softspoken video interview with <a href="http://www.gamereactor.no/">Gamereactor</a> on where the sci-fi title <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> is today, and what's on the horizon. The interview seems intended for those who haven't played the game before -- as Hilmar gives an intro to the game and its <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/28/eve-evolved-eve-onlines-server-model/">single world setting</a> -- or perhaps gamers who haven't gotten their feet wet in a massively multiplayer online game yet, as he highlights some of the benefits of incorporating more social aspects into video games. <br /><br />Hilmar gives some history of the company, discussing how <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a> has grown into having nearly 400 employees at present, with 300 of them focused on the next expansion and its retail launch (<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/08/ccp-games-and-atari-partner-on-retail-box-sales/ ">in partnership with Atari</a>). The next expansion -- <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/08/ccp-reveals-tech-3-coming-in-eves-march-expansion/ ">which will include Tech III and wormhole exploration</a> -- will go live on March 10th, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> will appear on retail shelves on March 12th.
