For this latest <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook">Tattered Notebook</a>, I'd already planned -- and in fact was in the middle of -- writing impressions of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/scars-of-the-awakened/"><em>Scars of the Awakened</em></a>, <em><a href="https://www.everquest2.com/">EverQuest II's</a></em> most recent meaty update. I've collected a slew of notes taken from the adventurer and crafter questlines, including some tips and time-saving tricks. But amidst all that intense update research (I gladly sacrifice myself for you guys!), I got distracted. And no, it wasn't by a shiny!<br />
<br />
You see, although the land of Cobalt Scar opened up just over a month ago, I've been pulled away and unable to complete everything I want to in that zone. Why? Because in that same time, there have been multiple city festivals, a round of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/18/tattered-notebook-a-guide-to-eqiis-moonlight-enchantments-an/">Moonlight Enchantments</a> (with new quests and brand-new housing items that were a must have), a double XP weekend that just begged for some serious crafting advancement, a commissioned housing project to complete, personal houses to decorate, old quests to finally finish up... and that was just to start!<br />
<br />
As the guilt for not finishing the entirety of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GU66/">GU66</a> settled in, friends who weren't as high-level as I wanted to play together in areas they had access to, which coincidentally did not include the latest update. So off I ran through older zones and dungeons with lower-leveled friends. Needless to say, my in-game adventures of late have stretched all over the map of Norrath. Sounds busy, no? It was during all this that I had to finally lay my delusions of finishing everything I have planned before <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next">EverQuest Next</a></em> to rest; there's just too much to do in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EQII</em></a>!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/08/tattered-notebook-theres-too-much-to-do-in-everquest-ii/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tattered Notebook: There's too much to do in EverQuest II!</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/08/tattered-notebook-theres-too-much-to-do-in-everquest-ii/">Tattered Notebook: There's too much to do in EverQuest II!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 08 Jun 2013 18:00:00 EST. A curious thing happened as I was strolling through <a href="https://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> this past week. It seems there was a bit of commotion in the Norrathian community, with races good and evil cheering and dancing in the streets. Personally, I didn't even know Sarnak could move like that! What was the catalyst of this celebration? Why, didn't you hear -- there was news about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next"><em>EverQuest Next</em></a>! And with the scarcity of that kind of treasure, it's understandable that folks went a'frolicking. But this wasn't just any old news, either. This week, fans learned that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/emily-taylor/">Emily "Domino" Taylor</a>, also known as Pentapod, was returning to the <em>EverQuest</em> franchise as the producer for <em>EQ Next</em>.<br />
<br />
Can the presence of just one person really send prospective players into a tizzy of anticipation? Yes, it can. I watched as a number of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii">EQII</a></em> players, once ambivalent or on the fence about <em>EQN</em>, not only look twice at the upcoming sandbox but hop right on over into the newest Norrath's camp. More eyes than ever are watching the development of this game (even though there is scant little to watch at the moment). And this is why.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/25/the-tattered-notebook-eq-next-ranks-swell-with-the-known/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: EQ Next scoops up Emily 'Domino' Taylor</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/25/the-tattered-notebook-eq-next-ranks-swell-with-the-known/">The Tattered Notebook: EQ Next scoops up Emily 'Domino' Taylor</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 25 May 2013 18:00:00 EST. Lately, there have been a number of topics all vying for my attention here in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook">Tattered Notebook</a>. In a couple of instances, some of them got a little rough and started pushing the others around to try for a better place in line. Yet all the while, <a href="https://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II's</em></a> Moonlight Enchantments has been patiently waiting. So as a reward (we do like to reward good behavior here!), that quiet little topic is getting the spotlight in a special bonus edition. And the timing couldn't be more perfect!<br />
<br />
You see, initially this guide was just going to focus on speed to help you get through that short two-day event that comes but once a month on the 20th and 21st in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EQII</em></a>. Now, however, we get to delve into the changes and new things coming to the Enchanted Grottoes, from even more housing items (yes, that's on top of the new additions in March) to two new repeatable quests to earn the tokens to buy the items. And with this month's festival right around the corner, having a game plan ready to get the most out of those two days will benefit new and old players alike.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/18/tattered-notebook-a-guide-to-eqiis-moonlight-enchantments-an/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tattered Notebook: A guide to EQII's Moonlight Enchantments (with new stuff!)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/18/tattered-notebook-a-guide-to-eqiis-moonlight-enchantments-an/">Tattered Notebook: A guide to EQII's Moonlight Enchantments (with new stuff!)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 18 May 2013 20:00:00 EST. It's like they know me! You'd think with all the bag functionalities that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">SOE</a> has introduced to <a href="https://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> this year that the devs have watched my livestreams and taken pity on me and my storage predicament. And it didn't stop with just one new addition; even after one set of sorting capabilities was released, another set came along. With all these new organizational tools, there is a chance even I might actually find something in my oft-overstuffed bags. (Clean bags, however, is another matter entirely and not likely to be resolved!)<br />
<br />
Now bag sorting in and of itself really doesn't sound like a big deal, the kind complete with flashing lights and a ticker-tape parade. It's not. In fact, it's pretty much a little thing... well, except for micro-managers and packrats, of course. So why in heavens would I be spending time talking about piddly updates in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/">EQII</a></em> when such <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/30/eqiis-scars-of-the-awakened-highlights-the-story-through-art/">an expansive one</a> recently released? Because getting the little things (and getting them with regularity) <em>is</em> big. The subject of minor updates warrants just as much attention as a named one like <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/scars-of-the-awakened/">Scars of the Awakened</a></em>, both for what the updates are and for what they portend. And those updates bode well for everyone.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/11/tattered-notebook-its-the-little-things-that-count-in-eqii-up/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tattered Notebook: It's the little things that count in EQII updates</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/11/tattered-notebook-its-the-little-things-that-count-in-eqii-up/">Tattered Notebook: It's the little things that count in EQII updates</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 11 May 2013 14:00:00 EST. OMG! It's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next"><em>EverQuest Next</em></a> news! No, really. I'm not pulling your chain. It's all official and everything. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/namaste-entertainment/">Namaste Entertainment</a>, the creator of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/storybricks/"><em>Storybricks</em></a>, made the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/23/storybricks-team-announces-everquest-next-collaboration/">announcement</a> that it is collaborating with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE/">SOE</a> on <em>EQ Next</em>. So go ahead and do your finally-some-news celebratory dance, I'll wait a moment. Just don't go all out and strain something; you'll want to be able to spring into celebration again when more is revealed, right?<br />
<br />
Sadly, the news is pretty much summed up right there in that one sentence; we don't have any more details to revel in and no time frame for getting more (well, other than SOE Live, of course!). But when has a lack of specifics derailed fan excitement about an upcoming game? Well we may not have definitive details, but using what we know about <em>Storybricks</em>, we can certainly speculate on what the relationship between the two means for Norrath's next incarnation.<br />
<br />
And if there was ever a relationship I was happy to see, it's <em>Storybricks</em> and <em>EverQuest Next's</em>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/27/tattered-notebook-eq-next-and-storybricks-sitting-in-a-tree/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tattered Notebook: EQ Next and Storybricks, sitting in a tree...</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/27/tattered-notebook-eq-next-and-storybricks-sitting-in-a-tree/">Tattered Notebook: EQ Next and Storybricks, sitting in a tree...</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 27 Apr 2013 16:00:00 EST. If you were even slightly luckier than I, you had the chance to traipse through the Chronoportals of <a href="https://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II's</em></a> most recent event. The events inside these portals are a nod to the game's older sibling, the original <a href="https://www.everquest.com/"><em>EverQuest</em></a>, and include landscapes, characters, and dialogue that reflect that first incarnation of Norrath. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest"><em>EQ</em></a> vets understood the inside jokes and humor, who then had to explain it to us young <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>EQII</em></a> whippersnappers who'd never experienced the situations featured.<br />
<br />
Even though I missed out on this year's event (I was too busy trying to weasel some <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next"><em>EQ Next</em></a> information out of folks at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2013/">GDC</a> for you), it got me thinking: If <em>EQII</em> has Chronoportals back to <em>EQ</em>, will <em>EQ Next</em> have some back to <em>EQII</em>? And if so, what iconic moments should be immortalized in the next incarnation of Norrath?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/31/tattered-notebook-what-chronoportals-to-eqii-would-you-put-in-e/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tattered Notebook: What Chronoportals to EQII would you put in EQ Next?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/31/tattered-notebook-what-chronoportals-to-eqii-would-you-put-in-e/">Tattered Notebook: What Chronoportals to EQII would you put in EQ Next?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 31 Mar 2013 14:00:00 EST. There is no two ways about it: Every time I started to pen this particular piece, I had to pause. You see, the story behind it all is steeped in emotion; inspiration, joy, pride, sadness, and togetherness are all a part of the heartwarming tale that is simply impossible to not be touched by (or in my case, completely choked up). And it's one that makes me proud to be a part of the <a href="https://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> community.<br />
<br />
Last year we shared with you the story of a young boy whose simple wish for a fun place to play in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/17/the-tattered-notebook-the-touching-story-of-ribbitribbit-and-th/"><em>EQII</em></a> brought the community together in an unparalleled way. In order to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/17/the-tattered-notebook-the-touching-story-of-ribbitribbit-and-th/">make an extra special place for Ribbitribbit</a>, adventurers, raiders, and crafters left their guilds -- heck, even their servers -- to come aid in what became more than a simple island refuge. It became a multi-house playground that included a Tier 3 guild hall. The sheer volume of enthusiastic participation is enough to make any heart swell. Sadly, shortly thereafter Ribbitribbit lost his battle with cancer, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/26/the-tattered-notebook-the-passing-of-ribbitribbitt/">that same community mourned his passing</a>. Now, one year later, the same organizer who uncorked that first outpouring of generosity has brought players together again to commemorate community, continue philanthropy, and remember those who have been lost.<br />
<br />
Today's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook/">Tattered Notebook</a> invites you to become a part of this community with a look at Ribbitribbit Day 2013.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/16/the-tattered-notebook-eqiis-ribbitribbit-day-celebrates-commun/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: EQII's Ribbitribbit Day celebrates community</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/16/the-tattered-notebook-eqiis-ribbitribbit-day-celebrates-commun/">The Tattered Notebook: EQII's Ribbitribbit Day celebrates community</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 16 Mar 2013 14:00:00 EST. When <a href="https://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> first went <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/06/soe-releases-eqii-age-of-discovery-expansion-freeport-revamp-f/">free-to-play</a> in December 2011, a number of long-lost players poked their noses back into the game. But even before that, and certainly since then, veteran players have found cause to return to Norrath after a (sometimes very) prolonged absence. And why not? There are plenty of great things to lose yourself in within <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EQII</em></a>... as well as plenty of ways to feel lost! Invariably, those who have been gone for any length of time are confronted with a doozy of a headache-inducer upon their return: alternate advancements.<br />
<br />
Back in the dark recesses of time, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook/">The Tattered Notebook</a> brought you a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/27/the-tattered-notebook-a-newbie-look-at-alternate-advancement/">newbie guide to these AA points</a>. But much has changed in the ensuing two years, including the AAs. So it behooves us to take another look and update our information. The following is my personal journey with that at times intimidating system, sprinkled with tips, tricks, and tales of woe I've picked up along the way.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/02/the-tattered-notebook-attacked-by-aas-in-eqii/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Attacked by AAs in EQII</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/02/the-tattered-notebook-attacked-by-aas-in-eqii/">The Tattered Notebook: Attacked by AAs in EQII</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 02 Mar 2013 14:00:00 EST. So let's talk about adornments in <a href="http://www.everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>. If you're a relatively casual <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>EQII</em></a> player like I am, you may not have any adornments on your gear. Heck, you may not even know what adornments are or why you might want them! <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook">The Tattered Notebook</a> is here for you, and while adorning can seem like an unnecessary pain in the butt at first, availing yourself of the system will make your avatars much more powerful in the long run.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/23/the-tattered-notebook-getting-started-with-everquest-ii-adornme/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Getting started with EverQuest II adornments</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/23/the-tattered-notebook-getting-started-with-everquest-ii-adornme/">The Tattered Notebook: Getting started with EverQuest II adornments</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 23 Feb 2013 14:00:00 EST. Ahh, l'amore. You can feel it in their air tonight, no? Oh wait, that was Thursday! No matter, 'tis still the season of love and loot in Norrath.<br />
<br />
Did I say loot? You bet your barbarian love notes I did! Holidays in <a href="https://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> may be inspired by their real-world counterparts, but their true purpose lies in supplying us with oodles of special loot. Don't believe me? Just look at the plethora of items available from quests, crafting, and collections during any given celebration. Sure, there are fun lore lines to follow as well, and that aspect certainly deserves a nod, but there is no denying the prominence of holiday paraphernalia that fills our bags, banks, and vaults.<br />
<br />
Not that I am complaining, mind you; it's precisely this loot I am after -- specifically, the housing items. As a die-hard decorating nut, I look forward to the holidays like Erollisi Day to get my hands/paws/claws on these unique items offered only during the events. Unfortunately, like many of us plagued by real life, I don't always have tons of time to devote to the festivities, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EQII's</em></a> holidays are pretty elaborate affairs with a whole lot to do. So to help us both get the most treasure for our time, I've devised this speed guide to getting the holiday goods before the festival ends at 2:59 a.m EST on February 21st.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/16/the-tattered-notebook-a-guide-to-getting-erollisi-day-spoils-fo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: A guide to getting Erollisi Day spoils for the time-impaired</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/16/the-tattered-notebook-a-guide-to-getting-erollisi-day-spoils-fo/">The Tattered Notebook: A guide to getting Erollisi Day spoils for the time-impaired</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 16 Feb 2013 14:00:00 EST. I was going to update you fine folk on my adventures in rolling my 17,000th <a href="http://www.everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> alt for this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook">Tattered Notebook</a>, but <a href="http://www.soe.com">SOE</a> decided to drop a <strike>Fan Faire</strike> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/02/soe-live-scheduled-for-august-planet-hollywood/">Live date</a> on us, which sort of mucked up my nefarious plans.<br />
<br />
Why do we care about SOE Live? Well, there are multiple reasons, but the most important one is that instead of having to wait until October, we now get to see (and touch!) <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next"><em>EverQuest Next</em></a> in early August!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/09/the-tattered-notebook-what-i-want-to-see-in-everquest-next/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: What I want to see in EverQuest Next</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/09/the-tattered-notebook-what-i-want-to-see-in-everquest-next/">The Tattered Notebook: What I want to see in EverQuest Next</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 09 Feb 2013 14:00:00 EST. It's time to talk experimentation in <a href="https://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>. No, I don't mean sniffing, snorting, smoking, or otherwise illicitly subjecting yourself to the various flora in Norrath; I'm referring to one of the three new crafting prestige lines introduced with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Chains-of-Eternity/"><em>Chains of Eternity</em></a>. As I'm an armorer, gear augmentation definitely seemed the most relevant to my trade. (Besides, can you just see me cranking out 100 breastplates at a time?!) So as I leveled through the 90s, I started plopping those prestige points into that middle line and looked forward to the day I could beef up my armor.<br />
<br />
But let's face it -- I don't always choose things on the basis of logic; a Vulcan, I am not. What actually drew me to the experimentation prestige line, even before I had any clue what it would do, was a remark from the devs during the panel and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/24/soe-live-2012-everquest-ii-interviews-highlight-focus-on-crafti/">my interview</a> at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE-Live-2012/">SOE Live</a>: that failure was an option! Experimentation became <em>the</em> choice because it would bring back some of the feel of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/">EQII's</a></em> original crafting. You vets out there will know what I am talking about -- when there was some real risk involved in crafting and your skill meant something. I may still not have the chance to die at the forge anymore (booo!), but failure with experimentation comes with much more of a bite.<br />
<br />
Sound intriguing? Take a walk on the wild side and let's explore experimentation.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/02/the-tattered-notebook-experimentation-in-everquest-ii/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Experimentation in EverQuest II</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/02/the-tattered-notebook-experimentation-in-everquest-ii/">The Tattered Notebook: Experimentation in EverQuest II</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 02 Feb 2013 18:00:00 EST. So the last time we talked <a href="http://www.everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>, I confessed that coming back to the game felt a lot like <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/12/the-tattered-notebook-why-i-came-back-to-everquest-ii/">coming home</a>. That's still true, in more ways than I first realized. I don't know about you, but when I return after a lengthy absence I have an overwhelming urge to get things done. As I look around the place and figure out what's changed, what needs fixing, and what seems like fun, I tend to get overwhelmed, too, because there's just a lot of <em>stuff</em> that needs doing.<br />
<br />
That's exactly what happened to me in Norrath over the past two weeks. I logged in with my 92 Sage and my 92 Shadowknight, surveyed their vast array of abilities and possibilities, and promptly threw up my hands.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/26/the-tattered-notebook-decisional-paralysis-in-everquest-ii/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Decisional paralysis in EverQuest II</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/26/the-tattered-notebook-decisional-paralysis-in-everquest-ii/">The Tattered Notebook: Decisional paralysis in EverQuest II</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 26 Jan 2013 14:00:00 EST. Two weeks ago I closed my <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/05/the-tattered-notebook-tips-and-tricks-to-start-the-new-year-in/">handy tips and tricks guide</a> by encouraging players to shun power-leveling in <a href="http://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>. At that point, I touched on the issue by talking about how you miss so much of the game by skipping all the stories and lore in the quests. I even cautioned that people hesitate to group with someone who doesn't yet know his or her class. But the reasons to avoid it go so much deeper than what I mentioned there. There are definite pitfalls when characters are power-leveled, even for the folks who have other max-level characters!<br />
<br />
Some may be wondering why this topic is hot enough at the moment to warrant more of my attention. As those of you who read level 1-9 chat already know, there was recently a massive surge in power-leveling services and a population explosion of max-level characters, all due to the unexpected consequences of combining the new experimentation crafting prestige line with playing as your character in the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/20/some-assembly-required-a-look-at-eqiis-dungeon-maker/">Dungeon Maker</a>. While this latest power-leveling scheme has been negated (thanks to last Tuesday's patch), many folks are feeling the fallout of using the service.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/19/the-tattered-notebook-pitfalls-of-powerleveling-in-eqii/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Pitfalls of powerleveling in EQII</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/19/the-tattered-notebook-pitfalls-of-powerleveling-in-eqii/">The Tattered Notebook: Pitfalls of powerleveling in EQII</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 19 Jan 2013 16:00:00 EST. When I log into <a href="http://www.everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> after a long absence, I feel a little bit like a world-weary vagabond who's finally earned a rest. I see myself -- or my avatar, at least -- dropping his luggage on a familiar front porch and surveying the surroundings he vividly remembers despite months (sometimes years) of travel abroad.<br />
<br />
There's a fine coating of dust on the furniture. The neighborhood has a bunch of new rules and as many new neighbors. All in all, though, the spires of Freeport and its refurbished waterfront are a welcome sight. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>EQII</em></a> has always been the one MMO that I return to without fail; it's also the one that I've played the most, now that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-galaxies"><em>Star Wars Galaxies</em></a> is gone.<br />
<br />
This time around, I'm coming back not for an expansion or a new feature (although there are plenty of both in the world's deepest themepark) but rather for the need for a little MMO stability. And hey, I'd be lying if I said I'm not partly motivated by the promise of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next"><em>EQNext</em></a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/12/the-tattered-notebook-why-i-came-back-to-everquest-ii/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Why I came back to EverQuest II</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/12/the-tattered-notebook-why-i-came-back-to-everquest-ii/">The Tattered Notebook: Why I came back to EverQuest II</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 12 Jan 2013 16:00:00 EST. Hellllloooooo fellow Norrathians! It is I, MJ -- the intrepid explorer, with a penchant for lightning and fire. And am I excited to be here!<br />
<br />
Right about now you may be noticing a slight change in authorship of your favorite <a href="http://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> column. You aren't seeing things; through a marvelous confluence of events (and no, I don't mean kidnapping <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/karen-bryan">Karen Bryan</a> and locking her in a dank cell in Freeport!), I have the opportunity to share my love of this game with you alongside another Norrathian denizen, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/jef-reahard">Jef Reahard</a>. And any of you who have seen me gallivanting about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>EQII's</em></a> many lands on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/livestream">Massively TV</a> every <em>EverQuest Two</em>-sday can attest to the fact I really do love this game. So it is with no shortage of glee that I begin my first <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook/">Tattered Notebook</a> entry.<br />
<br />
<em>Feastday, Blossoming 7, of the year 3897</em><br />
<br />
Throughout my most recent journeys, I have noticed that there is a good chunk of population that has either returned to the lands after a lengthy absence (not unlike yours truly a few years back) or is pretty new. For both groups, there are a number of little things that may be unknown or forgotten; heck, I've played for a long time and am still discovering these things! So today I am going to share with you a few of the tips and tricks I have learned for a smoother Norrathian life.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/05/the-tattered-notebook-tips-and-tricks-to-start-the-new-year-in/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Tips and tricks to start the new year in EQII</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/05/the-tattered-notebook-tips-and-tricks-to-start-the-new-year-in/">The Tattered Notebook: Tips and tricks to start the new year in EQII</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 05 Jan 2013 16:00:00 EST. As the year comes to a close, it's really amazing to look back and follow the twisty path of <a href="http://everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II's</em></a> evolution. This past year in particular stood out for me because the first half was marked by unconventional (some would say radical) ideas that broke away from the <a href="http://everquest.com"><em>EverQuest</em></a> tradition. The second half, though, revealed a return to the game's roots, and to what longtime players associate with the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest/">EQ</a> </em>franchise.<br />
<br />
In fact, when I look back even further, there are many things I've really come to appreciate in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EQII</em></a>, and I miss them when I'm playing other MMOs that don't have them. So in this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook/">Tattered Notebook</a>, I'm meeting up with the <em>EQII </em>ghosts of Frostfell past, present, and future to look at what I love most about the game and what I want to see in the game as we approach 2013.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/12/29/the-tattered-notebook-my-eqii-journey-with-the-ghosts-of-frostf/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: My EQII journey with the ghosts of Frostfell</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/12/29/the-tattered-notebook-my-eqii-journey-with-the-ghosts-of-frostf/">The Tattered Notebook: My EQII journey with the ghosts of Frostfell</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 29 Dec 2012 16:00:00 EST. This past week saw the arrival of two big events in <a href="http://everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>: Frostfell and a free 15-day gold membership upgrade to all former players. This is actually a great time for players to give <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>EQII</em></a> a try, not only because of the promo but because of the return of Frostfell. Frostfell is a festive dim sum of the best of what <em>EQII </em>offers. There's crafting, fun minigames, and a more in-depth dungeon crawl that you can do solo or with friends. And most of the rewards are perfect for the house-decorating community, another nice side of <em>EQII</em>.<br />
<br />
Let's look at the details of the promo for returning players and then take a look at what those players should be sure to check out during Frostfell.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/12/22/the-tattered-notebook-why-frostfell-and-the-gold-member-promo-a/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Why Frostfell and the Gold member promo are a perfect fit</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/12/22/the-tattered-notebook-why-frostfell-and-the-gold-member-promo-a/">The Tattered Notebook: Why Frostfell and the Gold member promo are a perfect fit</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 22 Dec 2012 16:00:00 EST. Just a few days ago, <a href="http://soe.com">SOE</a> launched the first wave of items submitted by players through <a href="https://player-studio.soe.com/">Player Studio</a>. <a href="http://everquest.com"><em>EverQuest</em></a>, <a href="http://everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>, and <a href="http://freerealms.com"><em>Free Realms</em></a> all have player-made items for sale in the Marketplace; the players who created the items receive 40% of the revenue. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest/"><em>EverQuest</em></a> launched its first player-made weapon, the Stormlord's Bludgeon; <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> featured the Heroic Salesman's Chest and Cloak of the North Star; and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/free-realms/"><em>Free Realms</em></a> revealed the Swirly Railed Gazebo and Happy Heart T-Shirt.<br />
<br />
We had a chance to talk to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/rick-reynolds">Rick Reynolds</a>, Senior Manager of SOE's E-Commerce team, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/joe-shoopack">Joe Shoopack</a>, Director of Artistic Development, both of whom have played key roles in the successful launch of Player Studio. They shared insight into what goes on behind the scenes after a player submits an item, and they hinted at future plans for the system. Earlier this week, we reported on a change in the <em><a href="http://legendsofnorrath.station.sony.com/index.vm">Legends of Norrath</a></em>. Gold members have received free <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/legends-of-norrath">LoN</a></em> packs each month, and they would stack up so that even if you didn't log in during a certain month, you'd still receive the pack. Going forward, you have to log in each month or you won't get the pack for that month. It might seem like a small change, but there are a surprising number of players who participate not necessarily for the game cards but for a chance at one of the rarer loot cards.<br />
<br />
Over the years, <em>Legends of Norrath</em> has actually had several loot cards that created some controversy, and one could argue that <em>LoN </em>helped ease <a href="http://everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II's</em></a> transition to the Marketplace and even to free-to-play. Let's look at some of the more notable loot cards in this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook/">Tattered Notebook</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/12/08/the-tattered-notebook-how-legends-of-norrath-influenced-everque/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: How Legends of Norrath influenced EverQuest II</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/12/08/the-tattered-notebook-how-legends-of-norrath-influenced-everque/">The Tattered Notebook: How Legends of Norrath influenced EverQuest II</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 08 Dec 2012 18:00:00 EST. With the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Chains-of-Eternity/">Chains of Eternity</a></em> expansion now live, I've seen lots of comments and even a couple of emails from players who are looking to try out <a href="http://everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> or are thinking of coming back after an extended hiatus. And because the game is free-to-play, it's easy to get in-game and check things out before committing to a payment plan.<br />
<br />
But with all of the changes over the past year or so, it's sometimes hard to make sense of it all. Some guides and write-ups are now outdated, and with the recent forum conversion, it's difficult to find answers to common questions when coming back (or trying out) the game. So in this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-Tattered-Notebook/">Tattered Notebook</a>, I've put together a general rundown of topics that tend to come up for new and returning players.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/12/01/the-tattered-notebook-a-guide-for-new-and-returning-everquest-i/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: A guide for new and returning EverQuest II players</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/12/01/the-tattered-notebook-a-guide-for-new-and-returning-everquest-i/">The Tattered Notebook: A guide for new and returning EverQuest II players</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 01 Dec 2012 16:00:00 EST. It's time to talk about experience. No, not the experience that comes from immersing yourself in a virtual world and creating memorable moments. I'm talking about the numerical value assigned to the various things you do in game, the kind of experience everyone wants and never has enough of.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> underwent a recent change in how experience is awarded, and it got me thinking about experience in general in our MMOs. How far have we come when it comes to the experience reward system, and will we ever arrive at a system that satisfies everyone?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/11/24/the-tattered-notebook-experiencing-experience-in-eqii/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Experiencing experience in EQII</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/11/24/the-tattered-notebook-experiencing-experience-in-eqii/">The Tattered Notebook: Experiencing experience in EQII</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 24 Nov 2012 18:00:00 EST. <a href="http://everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II's</em></a> <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Chains-of-Eternity/">Chains of Eternity</a></em> launched this past week, and while the paint is still fresh and I'm still taking it all in, there are a few things I really appreciate with this expansion so far. If you look back at all of the past expansions and adventure packs, you'll notice there always seemed to be one or two things that were trial balloons and never really fit with the spirit of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EQII</em></a>. In <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Desert-of-Flames/">Desert of Flames</a></em>, it was the arena, while more recently in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Velious/">Velious</a></em>, the public quests got a lot of use but always seemed to have issues (and they now seem to be off the radar entirely).</div>

<em>Chains of Eternity</em> is just good old <em>EverQuest II</em> content, and it's tailor-made for longtime players. In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-Tattered-Notebook/">Tattered Notebook</a>, I'll offer up some first impressions of the new expansion and a few things that I appreciate about the game.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/11/17/the-tattered-notebook-breaking-into-eqiis-chains-of-eternity/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Breaking into EQII's Chains of Eternity</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/11/17/the-tattered-notebook-breaking-into-eqiis-chains-of-eternity/">The Tattered Notebook: Breaking into EQII's Chains of Eternity</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 17 Nov 2012 16:00:00 EST. This past week, we had a chance to see some of the new zones with a guided tour from Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/holly-longdale/">Holly Longdale</a> and Designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/carlos-mora/">Carlos Mora</a>. They took us to the Ethernere and explained several exciting new features along the way. The dust has barely settled from our yearly foray to Bally's, and already we're seeing some of the exciting news from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE-Live-2012/">SOE Live</a> become a reality. Just a few days ago, we saw the arrival of Krono to <a href="http://everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>, and out of all the news about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EQII</em></a>, it has the potential to be the biggest game changer of all. Basically, Norrath now has its own version of <a href="http://eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online's</em></a> PLEX.<br />
<br />
In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-Tattered-Notebook/">Tattered Notebook</a>, we'll take a look at exactly how Krono works, but we'll also examine how this could lead to even bigger changes in <em>EverQuest II</em>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/11/03/the-tattered-notebook-an-appraisal-of-eqiis-krono/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: An appraisal of EQII's Krono</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/11/03/the-tattered-notebook-an-appraisal-of-eqiis-krono/">The Tattered Notebook: An appraisal of EQII's Krono</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 03 Nov 2012 14:00:00 EST. If there's one word that perfectly sums up the spirit of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE-Live-2012/">SOE Live</a>, it's family. I don't know how, but <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE/">SOE</a> always manages to deliver a big gaming event and make it feel like a casual, intimate get-together at the same time. The picture above epitomizes that, and I'll explain the story behind it below.<br />
<br />
There was a lot to cover this time around, and I would argue that this year's convention included more titles than ever before and brought more game news than it ever has. It was a hectic pace, but we all survived in one piece. Well, actually, there was that one guy at the pool (a Ranger), but he turned out to be OK too. You've probably seen the many articles that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/mj-guthrie">MJ Guthrie</a> and I put together over the past few days, but I'd like to use this week's column to do one final wrap-up of things that weren't covered but deserve a look. Read on for my final wrap-up of a very busy SOE Live.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/27/the-tattered-notebook-final-thoughts-on-soe-live-2012/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Final thoughts on SOE Live 2012</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/27/the-tattered-notebook-final-thoughts-on-soe-live-2012/">The Tattered Notebook: Final thoughts on SOE Live 2012</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 27 Oct 2012 14:00:00 EST. Last night brought a flurry of new announcements for <a href="http://soe.com">SOE</a> titles, but one of the more curious moments was when SOE President <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/John-Smedley/">John Smedley</a> got to talking about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/EverQuest-Next/"><em>EverQuest Next</em></a>. He started off by bringing out two of the handful of screenshots that we've seen time and time again, and with a click of a button, made them evaporate into a shower of pixels, to be followed by a blank screen and the sound of crickets. In short, they went back to the drawing board.<br />
<br />
It's a bold move to take a year and a half of production and completely scrap it, especially at a time in the industry when the competition is so tight, but Smedley promised that what we'd see in the end would be unlike anything we've ever seen. Perhaps, though, we've already seen a glimpse of the future in the other two titles in the <a href="http://everquest.com"><em>EQ</em></a> franchise. What will the sandbox gameplay look like in <em>EQ Next</em>? I'll prognosticate below.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/20/the-tattered-notebook-what-does-a-sandbox-look-like-in-norrath/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: What does a sandbox look like in Norrath?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/20/the-tattered-notebook-what-does-a-sandbox-look-like-in-norrath/">The Tattered Notebook: What does a sandbox look like in Norrath?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 20 Oct 2012 12:00:00 EST. What do goat herding and community management have to do with one another? On the surface, you'd probably think not much, but at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-Online/">GDC Online</a> this week, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE/">SOE</a> Head of Global Relations <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Linda-Carlson/">Linda "Brasse" Carlson</a> explained the parallels between her job as Community Manager and her job as a goat herder.<br />
<br />
In the talk, though, she not only gave advice on how to run a community management team but also shared some interesting observations about some of SOE's online communities in general. In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-Tattered-Notebook/">Tattered Notebook</a>, we'll look at some of the highlights.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/13/the-tattered-notebook-linda-carlson-on-goat-herding-and-communi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Linda Carlson on goat herding and community management</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/13/the-tattered-notebook-linda-carlson-on-goat-herding-and-communi/">The Tattered Notebook: Linda Carlson on goat herding and community management</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 13 Oct 2012 16:00:00 EST. There's just a couple of weeks left until this year's <a href="http://www.soe.com/soelive/">SOE Live</a>, and players are all preparing for what should be a very busy convention with lots of game news. But for some of us, it's hard to get used to not calling it Fan Faire. The gathering has had a long past spanning more than a decade and more than a few memorable moments (some of them not fit to print!).<br />
<br />
What happens in Vegas doesn't always stay in Vegas, and as fans get ready to once again descend upon Bally's, it's worth looking back at highlights from past Fan Faires. In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook/">Tattered Notebook</a>, we'll revisit a few of those memorable moments.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/06/the-tattered-notebook-seven-highlights-from-soe-fan-faire-histo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Seven highlights from SOE Fan Faire history</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/06/the-tattered-notebook-seven-highlights-from-soe-fan-faire-histo/">The Tattered Notebook: Seven highlights from SOE Fan Faire history</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 06 Oct 2012 18:00:00 EST. With an ever-growing number of MMOs competing for attention (and your wallet), I'm sure every game company is constantly asking, "What can we do to bring in new players and convince former players to come back?" This past week, the <a href="http://everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> team posed that very question to a surprising group: the players!<br />
<br />
In a <a href="http://forums.station.sony.com/eq2/posts/list.m?&amp;topic_id=522444">recent post to the official forums</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/everquest-ii/"><em>EQII</em></a> Producer Holly "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/holly-longdale/">Windstalker</a>" Longdale posted the following:
<blockquote class="bq-standard">
	Howdy Norrathians! The team has been brainstorming ideas that would ease the re-entry back into the game and soften the learning curve for returning players as well as creative options for a Refer-a-Friend program. What would float your boat if you are, or were, a returning player at some point? Creative suggestions? And do you have ideas that would make you excited to not just refer a friend, but play with them too?</blockquote>
In past columns, we've looked at a few ways to attract new and returning players, but in this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook/">Tattered Notebook</a>, it's worth looking at the topic again. In just a few weeks, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE/">SOE</a> fans will gather in Las Vegas for <strike>Fan Faire</strike> <a href="http://www.soe.com/soelive/">SOE Live</a>. The name change isn't the only thing that's different this year, though. As the convention details begin to take shape, we're finding a lot more questions than answers. In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-Tattered-Notebook/">Tattered Notebook</a>, we'll look at some of the changes this year and try to read the tea leaves of what they might mean for fans. We'll look at what's on the schedule, like money and a possible Mobhunter sighting, and also what's not included (but should be).<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/09/22/the-tattered-notebook-gearing-up-for-soe-live/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Gearing up for SOE Live</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/09/22/the-tattered-notebook-gearing-up-for-soe-live/">The Tattered Notebook: Gearing up for SOE Live</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 22 Sep 2012 16:00:00 EST. Last week's announcement of a new <a href="http://everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> expansion was a surprise in many ways, but I think the biggest surprise of all is the fact that there is an expansion coming at all. The game has gone through many changes in both its update schedule and payment model over the past few years, so it's interesting to see the announcement of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Chains-of-Eternity/">Chains of Eternity</a></em>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EQII's</em></a> ninth expansion. We've seen the transition to free-to-play, free content game updates, and with the most recent expansion, a move toward features and away from game content.<br />
<br />
So why is <em>EQII </em>going back to a traditional style expansion? And in light of free-to-play and not "pay to hope," should the game even continue with paid expansions? Let's look at a few things to consider in this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-Tattered-Notebook/">Tattered Notebook</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/09/15/the-tattered-notebook-are-eqii-expansions-a-square-peg-in-the-f/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Are EQII expansions a square peg in the free-to-play model?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/09/15/the-tattered-notebook-are-eqii-expansions-a-square-peg-in-the-f/">The Tattered Notebook: Are EQII expansions a square peg in the free-to-play model?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 15 Sep 2012 16:00:00 EST. Talk about a busy week for the <a href="http://everquest.com"><em>EverQuest</em></a> franchise! In a one-two punch, <a href="http://soe.com">SOE</a> announced new expansions for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest/"><em>EverQuest</em></a> and <a href="http://everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> and unveiled <a href="http://www.soe.com/player-studio/">Player Studio</a>, a new tool that will allow players to create and sell their own items on the marketplace. I went from "what shall I write about this week" to "where do I begin?!"<br />
<br />
The expansions deserve attention in their own right, plus they're still a ways off from being released, so in this week's column, I'd like to look at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/09/06/create-and-sell-your-own-in-game-items-with-soes-player-studi/">Player Studio</a> with an eye on <em>EQ's</em> past. In the history of the franchise, user-generated content has been around for a long time, as has open-ended gameplay. Both seem to be making a return to <em>EQ</em> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii">EQII</a>, and I'll say it's long overdue.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/09/08/the-tattered-notebook-why-player-studio-is-actually-a-return-t/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Why Player Studio is actually a return to EQ's roots</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/09/08/the-tattered-notebook-why-player-studio-is-actually-a-return-t/">The Tattered Notebook: Why Player Studio is actually a return to EQ's roots</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 08 Sep 2012 16:00:00 EST. The <a href="http://everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> team has been regularly checking off game changes from the summer update announcement, and the most recent additions to the world of Norrath are new Gigglegibber minigames. If you've had your eye on a certain armor crate, a particular mount, or a handy consumable, but you haven't wanted to spend a lot of Station Cash to buy it, you can try your luck at winning it through one of three minigames. For 100 SC, you can buy a ticket, play a game, and get a random reward at the end.<br />
<br />
If you're curious about what the games are like and what the possible prizes are, then you're in luck! In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-Tattered-Notebook/">Tattered Notebook</a>, we'll hang out with the Gigglegibbers and explore the new minigames.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/09/01/the-tattered-notebook-piling-up-prizes-with-eqiis-gigglegibber/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Piling up prizes with EQII's Gigglegibber minigames</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/09/01/the-tattered-notebook-piling-up-prizes-with-eqiis-gigglegibber/">The Tattered Notebook: Piling up prizes with EQII's Gigglegibber minigames</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 01 Sep 2012 16:00:00 EST. A few days ago, the <a href="http://everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> team made itself available for a <a href="http://www.everquest2.com/news/article?month=082012&amp;id=51348">question-and-answer session on Twitter</a>. This session was unusual not because the team doesn't take the time to answer questions (communication through the years has had its peaks and valleys but is pretty decent overall) but because the venue is a new one for the team. As far as I can recall, this is the first time the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/EverQuest-II">EQII</a></em> team has used Twitter to field questions, and it led to some juicy answers. In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/The-Tattered-Notebook/">Tattered Notebook</a>, let's look at a few of the highlights!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/08/25/the-tattered-notebook-twitter-highlights-from-the-everquest-ii/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Twitter highlights from the EverQuest II team</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/08/25/the-tattered-notebook-twitter-highlights-from-the-everquest-ii/">The Tattered Notebook: Twitter highlights from the EverQuest II team</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 25 Aug 2012 16:00:00 EST. <a href="http://eqinterface.com">EQInterface</a> and <a href="http://eq2interface.com">EQ2Interface</a> have been stalwart sidekicks for me through the years, and it's great to see them expand into other games. They now have a library of UIs for several MMOs and have really helped put player-made UIs on the map. <a href="http://everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II's</em></a> site had a news article announcing that the collective UI site, now called <a href="http://MMOUI.com">MMOUI.com</a>, is celebrating its 10th birthday this week, so I thought I'd get in the celebratory spirit by highlighting a few iconic favorites and taking a brief look at the state of the user interface in MMOs. I've included picks from three <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE/">SOE</a> MMOs: <a href="http://everquest.com"><em>EverQuest</em></a>, <a href="http://vanguardthegame.com"><em>Vanguard</em></a>, and of course, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>.<br />

In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-Tattered-Notebook/">Tattered Notebook</a>, we'll put down our macros, take a break from resizing windows, and look at the quest for the perfect UI.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/08/18/the-tattered-notebook-celebrating-the-search-for-the-perfect-ui/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Celebrating the search for the perfect UI</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/08/18/the-tattered-notebook-celebrating-the-search-for-the-perfect-ui/">The Tattered Notebook: Celebrating the search for the perfect UI</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 18 Aug 2012 14:00:00 EST. This week, <a href="http://everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> launched a new feature called <a href="http://soemote.com">SOEmote</a>. It gives players the ability to use a webcam and create facial expressions for their avatars, but it also includes the ability to change your voice to match your character in voice chat. You wouldn't think that being able to raise and lower eyebrows, tilt your head, or sound like a pixie would match up well with killing orcs and looting treasures, but neither would home decorating, and yet it's become a very popular activity in game. Will SOEmote follow suit and be yet another outlet for player creativity, or is it just a gimmick? In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-Tattered-Notebook/">Tattered Notebook</a>, we'll take a look at the new feature and give some first impressions about its potential.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/08/11/the-tattered-notebook-exploring-identity-with-eqiis-soemote/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Exploring identity with EQII's SOEmote</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/08/11/the-tattered-notebook-exploring-identity-with-eqiis-soemote/">The Tattered Notebook: Exploring identity with EQII's SOEmote</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 11 Aug 2012 18:00:00 EST. This week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-Tattered-Notebook/">Tattered Notebook</a> feels like a "hey, wait a second!" column because I didn't get a chance to write about this leading up to the launch of <a href="http://www.everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II's</em></a> Qeynos Revamp, and just around the corner is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOEmote/">SOEmote</a> and the <a href="http://www.everquest2.com/news/article?month=082012&amp;id=51312">August update</a>. I've always made it clear that I'm not a PvPer, but that's because I'm lousy at it, not because I don't love a good, tight PvP match. So I focused on running some of the newly revamped battlegrounds this week to see what's changed and how the new level agnostic system is working out.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/08/04/the-tattered-notebook-duking-it-out-in-eqiis-level-agnostic-ba/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Duking it out in EQII's level-agnostic battlegrounds</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/08/04/the-tattered-notebook-duking-it-out-in-eqiis-level-agnostic-ba/">The Tattered Notebook: Duking it out in EQII's level-agnostic battlegrounds</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 04 Aug 2012 14:00:00 EST. The tale of Helen and Paris is a classic one. Paris of Troy, blinded by Helen's beauty, was willing to risk full-scale naval invasion and the destruction of his home city in order to be with her. But what if the Paris and Helen love story had been more like the movie Shallow Hal, in which the women that Hal's attracted to are not very attractive on the outside to say the least? That pretty much sums up <a href="http://everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II's</em></a> character models for the past several years, and it creates a tricky situation on a number of levels.<br />
<br />
Gamers spend hours getting every nose wrinkle and hair curl just right, but what if that didn't matter? What if your carefully tailored character looked completely different to others than it does to you? And is it worth it to preserve two distinct sets of character models if it causes a mountain of work every time a new armor set is created? This past week, the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/EverQuest-II">EQII</a></em> team <a href="http://forums.station.sony.com/eq2/posts/list.m?topic_id=520314&amp;post_id=5776674#5776674">responded to a discussion about this very topic</a>, and in this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-Tattered-Noteboo/">Tattered Notebook</a>, we'll take a look at whether the current system needs to go!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/07/28/the-tattered-notebook-the-eqii-face-that-launched-a-thousand-sh/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: The EQII face that launched a thousand ships</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/07/28/the-tattered-notebook-the-eqii-face-that-launched-a-thousand-sh/">The Tattered Notebook: The EQII face that launched a thousand ships</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 28 Jul 2012 14:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II's</em></a> upcoming Qeynos revamp brings many new changes, but one that runs the risk of getting overlooked is a new public quest in Antonica. It's not necessarily a surprise that a low-level PQ would be added, since there was one in the Commonlands after the Freeport revamp. But I actually didn't discover it until I stumbled on a feedback thread in the testing forums. I'm a big fan of public quests because I think they're a great way of bringing people together without the traditional grouping hurdles, so I'm definitely rooting for this little PQ.
