Given the popularity of Batman, Superman, and the rest of the DC Comics license, you'd think an MMO based in and around Gotham City and Metropolis would be nothing short of wildly successful.<br />
<br />
If anything, though, <a href="http://dcuniverseonline.com"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> (as well as dearly departed <a href="http://soe.com">Sony Online Entertainment</a> titles like <a href="http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/index.vm"><em>Star Wars Galaxies</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-matrix-online"><em>The Matrix Online</em></a>) has proved that big-name IPs are not a surefire recipe for an MMO blockbuster. While <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online"><em>DCUO</em></a> has picked up a head of steam over the past couple of months, it took a free-to-play business model conversion to help the superhero title achieve success in its rookie year.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/11/year-one-a-look-back-at-dcuo-on-its-first-anniversary/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Year One: A look back at DCUO on its first anniversary</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/11/year-one-a-look-back-at-dcuo-on-its-first-anniversary/">Year One: A look back at DCUO on its first anniversary</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 11 Jan 2012 12:00:00 EST. The success notices keep rolling in for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a>. This time <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">Sony Online Entertainment</a> is touting the fact that one million new players have joined the game's community over the past week. Executive director of development <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/lorin-jameson">Lorin Jameson</a> says that the numbers are split 50/50 between the PC and PlayStation 3 platforms, and he also intimates that more good news is in the works for fans of the superhero MMO.<br />
<br />
"We have a lot of exciting things coming up for players to enjoy in the game and are thrilled at the initial enthusiasm for the game's free-to-play transition," Jameson said via press release.<br />

Well folks, we'd love to tell you the official date that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> is switching to its freemium business model. The only problem is that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">Sony Online Entertainment</a> isn't making that information available until tomorrow.<br />
<br />
Why this post, then?<br />
<br />
So you can mark your Bat-calendars of course! SOE will make the date official at 7:30 p.m. EDT on October 27th via its <a href="http://www.stickam.com/sonyonline">Stickam</a> portal (so, yes, this is effectively an announcement about an announcement). As we <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/19/massively-exclusive-soes-john-smedley-reveals-f2p-model-for-dc/">reported last month</a>, SOE will be moving <em>DCUO</em> to a tiered access plan and eliminating the barrier that is the monthly subscription fee -- although gamers who choose to continue paying it in the form of the Legendary plan will enjoy numerous perks including free DLC and lots of character slots.<br />

We still don't have a date for you with regard to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online"><em>DC Universe Online's</em></a> impending payment model <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/19/massively-exclusive-soes-john-smedley-reveals-f2p-model-for-dc/">switcheroo</a>. We do have the latest <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">Sony Online Entertainment</a> press release, though, and it's full of details about the superhero MMO's latest content patch.<br />
<br />
Listen up, Superman fans, as today's patch brings about the second phase of a three-part raid in which players must stop Brainiac from harnessing Kryptonian technology and using it to destroy the entire planet. The update, appropriately titled The Fate of the Fortress, features Superman's iconic arctic hideout known as the Fortress of Solitude, and the patch allows would-be heroes to team up with Kal-El, Lex Luthor, and their fellow players to tackle a challenging eight-man group combat raid.<br />
<br />
There's a bunch of new loot to be had as well, and today's update also features a new hard-mode option for the HIVE tier-two alert as well as a new Batcave PvP map. Finally, SOE has incorporated a new dueling mechanic into <em>DCUO</em>, so fire up your launchpads, button up your underoos, and get ready to save Gotham City and Metropolis from the clutches of the megalomaniacal Brainiac.<br />

For those of us who lack Batman's financial resources, maintaining several monthly MMO subscriptions can be a challenge. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">Sony Online Entertainment</a> recognizes this, and as a result, the company has just announced that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> will be officially joining the freemium revolution toward the end of October.<br />
<br />
The new business model will feature a familiar tiered access plan with three membership levels. The Free, Premium, and Legendary plans feature full access to the current game while offering different levels of "convenience and flexibility." Free players will be limited to two character slots, and new "downloadable game packs/updates, additional character slots, powers, and more" will be available for purchase via microtransactions.<br />
<br />
Premium players, i.e., folks who have spent at least $5 US on the game (including former subscribers and in-game item purchasers), will receive additional character slots, inventory slots, and higher cash limits. Legendary players will take home "maximum features and benefits" including free DLC, more than 15 character slots, and more than 80 inventory slots, all for the regular $14.99 monthly fee. <em>DCUO</em> will also continue to be available on SOE's Station Pass (and subscribing to the monthly all-in-one service nets you Legendary status in <em>DCUO</em> as well as access to all of SOE's MMORPGs).<br />

Finally, Massively sat down with SOE president <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/john-smedley">John Smedley</a> and producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/lorin-jameson">Lorin Jameson</a> to chat about the new model, and you can find that transcription after the break.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/19/massively-exclusive-soes-john-smedley-reveals-f2p-model-for-dc/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively Exclusive: SOE's John Smedley reveals F2P model for DC Universe Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/19/massively-exclusive-soes-john-smedley-reveals-f2p-model-for-dc/">Massively Exclusive: SOE's John Smedley reveals F2P model for DC Universe Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 19 Sep 2011 10:30:00 EST. Brainiac is back on the offensive in the latest <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/dc-universe-online"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> update, and this time his sights are set on Superman's Fortress of Solitude. Players must join forces with Superman and his reluctant ally Lex Luthor to fend off Brainiac, lest he use the Fortress' Kryptonian technology to destroy the Earth. Why Superman has Earth-destroying technology in his Fortress, we're not too sure. Just in case someone really pisses him off is our guess.<br />
	<br />
	The Fortress of Solitude is an eight-man raid which will reward successful players with Marks of Distinction, which players can use to purchase powerful new gear. The update also includes new high-level armor sets, including sets for heroes featuring Superman's logo, and sets for villains emblazoned with a 'Z' for "Zod." New hard-modes are also making an appearance, in the form of the Batcave and Hive hard-mode alerts. All this new content is available now, so jump right in and fight for some peace and solitude!<br />
	<br />
	<strong> UPDATE: Sony Online Entertainment released two corrected details today, August 4th. Players will earn Marks of Krypton good towards purchasing new gear in the Watchtower or Hall of Doom, rather than Marks of Distinction. There is no Hard Mode Option for the Hive Alert.</strong></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/02/fight-for-solitude-in-the-newest-dc-universe-online-update/">[Updated] Fight for solitude in the newest DC Universe Online update</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 02 Aug 2011 15:00:00 EST. Just like how Clark Kent and Superman are one and the same, so too is <a href="http://fw.perfectworld.com/"><em>Forsaken World's</em></a> open beta and launch. The free-to-play MMO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/01/forsaken-world-to-be-unleashed-march-23rd/">was scheduled to go live on March 23rd</a>, but <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/perfect-world-entertainment/">Perfect World Entertainment</a> surprised us all <a href="http://fw.perfectworld.com/news/?p=207471">by moving it forward to... today</a>.<br />
<br />
While the website calls this an open beta, the studio insists that this is indeed the official launch of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/forsaken-world/"><em>Forsaken World</em></a>. Semantics aside, players can now roll characters without fear of any future wipe as Perfect World Entertainment declares that from now on it's all "for keeps."<br />
<br />
From pets to prayers to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/01/forsaken-world-details-floating-guild-halls/">floating guild halls</a>, <em>Forsaken World</em> is trying to keep life spicy in the F2P market. Head on over <a href="http://fw.perfectworld.com/">to the official website</a> to get into the game today, and don't forget to check out <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/23/exclusive-interview-exploring-the-forsaken-world/">our exclusive Perfect World Entertainment interview</a> of this darker MMO.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/09/play-for-keeps-forsaken-world-launches/">Play for keeps: Forsaken World launches</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 09 Mar 2011 19:00:00 EST. Is that a bird? Is that a plane? Is that Superman? No, it's you in the House of El battlesuit. This piece of iconic gear, as well as the Lexcorp Salvation suit, is available to level 30 characters in <a href="http://dcuniverseonline.com"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a>. However, the suit isn't just handed to you for nothing; you have to earn it. These two suits are specially designed for heroes or villains who follow the Meta-human storyline. They contain the best stats for either tank, controller, healer, or DPS, and they can only be bought if you have the right influence with the right faction.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/chris-cao/">Chris Cao</a>, the game director for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online/"><em>DCUO</em></a>, gave Massively an exclusive video outlining exactly what it takes to get your hands on this special armor. If you are looking to follow the mega-billionaire Lex Luthor or the Man of Steel himself in the DC Universe, fly past the cut and pay close attention to this video.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/16/dcuo-examines-the-meta-human-power-suits/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DCUO examines the meta-human power suits</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/16/dcuo-examines-the-meta-human-power-suits/">DCUO examines the meta-human power suits</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 16 Feb 2011 17:00:00 EST. For those of you who haven't run through <a href="http://dcuniverseonline.com"><em>DC Universe Online's</em></a> tutorial instance 36,000 times by now, <a href="http://soe.com">SOE</a> has posted a new video to its <a href="http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=488286687329">Facebook page</a> previewing a bit of the goings on aboard Brainiac's prison/invasion/newbie ship. The one-minute clip is full of furious fists, physics-based combat and flying containers -- and in a bit of a spoiler -- the Man of Steel himself shows up to lend newbs a helping hand.<br />
<br />
Curiously, Superman's video voiceover isn't performed by Adam Baldwin, but other than that, the footage is exactly what you'll experience after you've fired up <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online.com"><em>DCUO's</em></a> character creator and taken your first steps into a larger world. Check it out after the cut and visit the game's <a href="http://dcuniverseonline.com">official website</a> for more details.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/26/soe-shows-off-dc-universe-online-newbie-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>SOE shows off DC Universe Online newbie video</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/26/soe-shows-off-dc-universe-online-newbie-video/">SOE shows off DC Universe Online newbie video</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 26 Jan 2011 17:00:00 EST. Launch day for <a href="http://soe.com">SOE's</a> long-awaited <a href="http://dcuniverseonline.com"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> is finally upon us, and in addition to breathless anticipation, server queues, and coordinating friend meet-ups, we also have a brand new trailer making the rounds. The clip, which clocks in at around a minute and a half, starts with footage from last summer's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/24/soe-and-blur-release-dcuo-story-trailer/">Blur Studios</a> cinematic before segueing into in-game material featuring heroes, villains, and player characters from the storied DC mythos.<br />
<br />
The video also plays up <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online"><em>DCUO's</em></a> superhero flavor in a manner reminiscent of Hollywood's greatest action movie trailers, from the heroes and villains facing off in the streets to the dramatic orchestral score and the "<em>save this universe...or destroy it</em>" titles. Check out all the mayhem after the cut, and let us know your early impressions of the game as the servers come up.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/11/soe-releases-dc-universe-launch-trailer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>SOE releases DC Universe launch trailer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/11/soe-releases-dc-universe-launch-trailer/">SOE releases DC Universe launch trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 11 Jan 2011 12:30:00 EST. You'd be hard-pressed to think of a more iconic superhero than Superman. The Man of Steel is instantly recognizable, the archetype that defines superheroes in every medium, a paragon of decency despite his titanic power. His presence has been felt in <a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> for quite some time, and in a rather fitting turn of events, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Sony-Online-Entertainment/">Sony Online Entertainment</a> has decided to use the last weekend prior to the game's launch to reveal screenshots of Superman in action.<br />
<br />
In addition to the concept sketch of the last son of Krypton and several neutral renders, the gallery shows off Superman fighting in a variety of environments, displaying both the range of his powers and the sheer level of power he operates at. While we can't promise that the most iconic hero in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/DC-Universe-Online/">DC Universe Online</a></em> will really ameliorate the wait until Tuesday's release, it might at least help take the edge off.<br />

With release just a scant week away, <a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> has a loose end to tie up -- specifically, the still-ongoing beta test. In the grand tradition of betas, of course, it won't be with a simple message to buy the game and a server shutdown. No, players will get to take part in something epic in the tradition of the source material, with <a href="http://www.facebook.com/DCUniverseOnline#!/notes/dc-universetm-online-the-official-game-page/dcuo-beta-ending-event-battle-of-the-legends/10150371676490717">a grand battle involving iconic characters of the universe as well as player characters</a>.<br />
<br />
Each of the closing events involve two iconic DC figures going head-to-head -- either Superman against Lex Luthor or The Joker versus Batman. Players will have the opportunity to fight alongside the iconic villain or hero depending on character alignment, with <a href="http://www.facebook.com/DCUniverseOnline#!/notes/dc-universetm-online-the-official-game-page/dcuo-beta-ending-event-battle-of-the-legends/10150371676490717">times varying based on the server</a>. And in the event that you can't attend, the team will be helpfully posting status updates on each iconic battle, as well as possibly introducing a few new wrinkles to complicate the event. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/DC-Universe-Online/">DC Universe Online</a></em> testers should still do their level best to be present for the battles -- after all, who wouldn't want to close off a beta by teaming up with Batman?<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dcuo-end-of-beta-event/">DCUO -- End of Beta Event</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dcuo-end-of-beta-event/#3746731"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2011/01/dcuo-end-of-beta-12_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dcuo-end-of-beta-event/#3746720"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2011/01/dcuo-end-of-beta-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dcuo-end-of-beta-event/#3746730"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2011/01/dcuo-end-of-beta-11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dcuo-end-of-beta-event/#3746721"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2011/01/dcuo-end-of-beta-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dcuo-end-of-beta-event/#3746722"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2011/01/dcuo-end-of-beta-03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/05/dc-universe-online-closes-its-beta-with-a-bang/">DC Universe Online closes its beta with a bang</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 05 Jan 2011 09:00:00 EST. So you want to be Superman? That is an extremely lofty goal for you. There is no way you can... Wait, what's that? According to the Creative Director of <a href="http://dcuniverseonline.com"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jens-andersen/">Jens Andersen</a>, it is possible for you to follow in Superman's footsteps. If you choose the Meta-Human storyline in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online/"><em>DCUO</em></a>, you will follow either the Man of Steel or -- if you are the villainous type -- Superman's arch-nemesis Lex Luthor. The team at <a href="http://soe.com">Sony Online Entertainment</a> just released <a href="http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=469005712329&amp;oid=99160148471&amp;comments">a video</a> on <a href="http://www.facebook.com/DCUniverseOnline">its facebook page</a> outlining just what it takes to don Supe's heroic cowl.<br />
<br />
However, if you are in a more nefarious mood, Massively has a special treat for you. Wednesday, Contributing Editor <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/krystalle-voecks">Krystalle Voecks</a> joined me for a run-through of the first instance in the Meta-Human villain line. In SOE's official video, Andersen mentions assisting Parasite. Well, we can show you exactly what that looks like with this video.<br />
<br />
Take a peek after the cut for both the Meta origin story and the Livestream video. Or you can pop over to <a href="http://www.facebook.com/DCUniverseOnline"><em>DCUO</em>'s official facebook page</a> for more information.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/17/dcuos-jens-anderson-unveils-the-meta-origin-story/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DCUO's Jens Anderson unveils the Meta origin story</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/17/dcuos-jens-anderson-unveils-the-meta-origin-story/">DCUO's Jens Anderson unveils the Meta origin story</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 17 Dec 2010 20:00:00 EST. We can now talk about <a href="http://dcuniverseonline.com"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a>. <a href="http://soe.com">Sony Online Entertainment</a>, <a href="http://www.warnerbros.com/">Warner Bros.</a>, and (of course) <a href="http://www.dccomics.com/dccomics/">DC Comics</a> have collaborated to make one of the first physics-based action MMORPGs. Now with the NDA lifted, we can finally give our impressions of this ground-breaking online game.<br />
<br />
A few of Massively's staff members have beta-tested <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online/"><em>DCUO</em></a> for about a month now. We have been biting our tongues for just about as long as we could. We have seen the highs and lows of this game. Making an MMO with proven mechanics is hard enough, but when a developer delves into unexplored territory, there are always huge risks. As with any game in still in production, not everything will be perfect. I will keep this in mind as we step into this DC Universe.<br />
<br />
Prepare to be amazed by the exhilarating graphics, excited by the high-octane mechanics, confounded by surprising glitches, and flabbergasted by the astonishing voice work. Step past the cut for the whole story and the screenshots I took as I was playing through the first six levels of <em>DC Universe Online</em>!<br />

If you are looking for the district that is the epitome of <a href="http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Metropolis">Metropolis</a>, look no further than the Tomorrow District. This apex of technology guides all scientific advancements for the entirety <a href="http://dcuniverseonline.com"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a>. Every gizmo you can imagine -- and not imagine -- is found here. Ever heard of a thermal-nuclear toothbrush? Yeah, neither have we, but the scientist in <a href="http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/STAR_Labs">STAR Labs</a> invented it. And STAR Labs is just one of the many gargantuan buildings your hero will find in this district of the future.<br />
<br />
If it's gameplay opportunities you seek, the Tomorrow District is is designed specifically for your high-level character. Even though <a href="http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Jenet_Klyburn_%28New_Earth%29">Jenet Kylburn</a> works for the good guys, sometimes she cannot maintain control of everything STAR Labs produces. As Game Director Chris Cao said in regard to the STAR Labs scientists, "<em>Sometimes their optimism exceeds their wisdom,</em>" and they have to call on the heroes to come save the day. However, because of the heaping amount of new technology in the area, the Tomorrow District attracts its share of villains looking to get their grubby paws on these advanced inventions.<br />
<br />
After the break, Chris Cao provides a travelogue of the ups and downs of this exciting zone.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/04/dc-universe-reveals-tomorrow-district-today/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DC Universe reveals Tomorrow District, today</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/04/dc-universe-reveals-tomorrow-district-today/">DC Universe reveals Tomorrow District, today</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 04 Nov 2010 17:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com"><em>DC Universe</em></a> fans can officially stop crying in their beer. No, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/04/dc-universe-online-delayed-until-early-2011/">delayed launch date</a> hasn't been rescinded, but today does mark the official start of the pre-order beta period. Budding superheroes who have ponied up for the <a href="http://www.soe.com">SOE</a> title will need to submit an image of their receipt via the <a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/betakey/">official pre-order webpage</a> to get the process rolling. Don't delay either, as submissions must be received prior to November 15th in order to receive your beta key.<br />
<br />
In addition to the privilege of previewing and testing the game, bug-hunters will get to participate in the end-of-beta event showcased in last summer's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/24/soe-and-blur-release-dcuo-story-trailer/">Blur Studios trailer</a> (an apocalyptic throw-down featuring Batman, Superman, the Joker, Lex Luthor, and others). Check out <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">SOE's</a> new <a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/betakey/">pre-order beta page</a> for more details.<br />

Through all of Superman's adventures, there's one adversary that epitomizes everything he's not: Lex Luthor. A brilliant man with no special powers, Luthor has nothing but contempt for others, seeking control and power even at the same time that he seeks the destruction of Superman. It's a known fact that Luthor will be featured in <a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a>, after appearing in the cinematic trailer as both antagonist and ally -- but now we get to see the man himself in his now-familiar power armor.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Marv-Wolfman/">Marv Wolfman</a>, writer for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/DC-Universe-Online/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a>, has plenty of history with writing Luthor, as he was behind the character's shift from being a mad scientist to the cold and calculating businessman he is today. And any veteran of DC comic continuity knows that Luthor might not ever come out on top... but he always makes for a worthy adversary. Take a gander at the gallery for a good look at an iconic character in the game -- a sometimes-ally, a dangerous adversary, and one of the motivating factors behind the game's overarching plot.<br />

With the launch of <a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> just around the corner, we're starting to see a bit more information revealed about <a href="http://www.soe.com">Sony Online Entertainment's</a> superhero extravaganza. <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/dcuniverseonline/news.html?sid=6275462&amp;mode=previews">Gamespot</a> reports on its lengthy hands-on at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">SOE's</a> Austin development studio; highlights include a quest chain in the city of Metropolis as well as observations on the game's RPG and gear mechanics.<br />
<br />
Fan website <a href="http://www.dcuosource.com/index.php/component/content/article/541-jens-andersen-speaks">DCUO Source</a> also contributes some interesting info in the form of a collation of comments from the game's <a href="http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=159248597418593">Facebook</a> site. Ordinarily, reader comments regarding teaser videos aren't anything to write home about, but the fact that SOE's Jens Andersen chimed in to answer questions provides some interesting reading.<br />
<br />
One exchange that seems particularly noteworthy is Andersen's response to a fan concerned with the lack of information on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online"><em>DCUO's</em></a> character customization options. "<em>Character creation will be ongoing throughout the game with our appearance collection system and real items with stats forming a great fusion between form and function,</em>" Andersen says<em>. "This means less choices upfront but more meaningful ones as you go through the game. It's a far cry from starting in rags and a loin cloth like in fantasy MMO's but it also isn't a fluff fest of everything which takes away the impact of getting cool stuff in games you can show off to your friends</em>," he writes.<br />

Today we have more from the question-and-answer portion of the <a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> panel at the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/sdcc-2010/">San Diego Comic-Con</a> last week. (<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/27/sdcc-2010-up-up-and-away-at-the-dcuo-panel/">Part one</a> of the panel was posted earlier this week.) Panelists included Creative Director Jens Andersen, Game Director Chris Cao, legendary comic book writer Marv Wolfman, Jim Lee, and the voice of the Joker, Mark Hamill.<br />
<br />
<strong>Will there be a mechanic for switching from hero to villain or vice versa?<br />
</strong><br />
No. You make the choice of hero or villain at character creation, and it can't be changed after that. This is so it is clear to other players in PvP who is on what team.<br />
<br />
<strong>Will current storylines in the DC comic universe affect the MMO?<br />
</strong><br />
The game will launch "pristine"; that is, the DC Universe in the game will be the popular, well-known one. Wonder Woman will be in her classic costume; Bruce Wayne will be Batman; etc. From there, storylines from the comics may start altering the MMO universe, but at least from the get-go, the game will start with a clean slate. <br />
<br />
<em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online/">DCUO</a></em> will be getting its own bi-weekly comic as well.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/01/sdcc-2010-dcuo-panel-part-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>SDCC 2010: Part two of our DCUO panel report</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/01/sdcc-2010-dcuo-panel-part-2/">SDCC 2010: Part two of our DCUO panel report</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 01 Aug 2010 16:00:00 EST. Are you pumped for <a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> after watching the recent "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/24/soe-and-blur-release-dcuo-story-trailer/">Who Do You Trust?</a>" trailer or <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/26/sdcc-2010-you-can-play-as-iconic-characters-massivelys-interv/">our own interview with John Smedley</a>? We can hardly blame you -- it's tough being a superhero waiting in the wings. While we count down the days until its November 2nd launch, there's a lot more <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online/"><em>DCUO</em></a> goodness to be had.<br />
<br />
Massively was on hand at the <em>DCUO </em>panel at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, where Jens Andersen, Chris Cao, Marv Wolfman, Jim Lee and Mark Hamill (who is reprising his voice work as the Joker) were on hand to answer questions about DC's upcoming title. Hit the jump for the full skinny on time travel, heroes, villains and Bat-shark repellent.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/27/sdcc-2010-up-up-and-away-at-the-dcuo-panel/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>SDCC 2010: Up, up and away at the DCUO panel</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/27/sdcc-2010-up-up-and-away-at-the-dcuo-panel/">SDCC 2010: Up, up and away at the DCUO panel</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 27 Jul 2010 15:00:00 EST. We talked quite a bit about the ability to play as Batman via a preorder bonus, and one of the questions we asked was "<em>Will there be more opportunities in the future to play as familiar DC Universe villains or heroes?</em>"<br />
<br />
John replied that they were thinking about it, but it sounds like the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online"><em>DCUO</em></a> team has been doing a lot more than just thinking about it. We caught up with <em>DCUO</em> Studio Art Director Mike Daubert at <a href="http://www.comic-con.org/">Comic-Con</a> this weekend, and he had some pretty exciting news for us.<br />

<a href="http://www.soe.com">Sony Online Entertainment</a> has just released a lengthy story trailer for its forthcoming <a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> superhero MMORPG. Debuting early Saturday morning on GameTrailers, the massive video clocks in at over six minutes in length and features nearly all of the <a href="http://www.dccomics.com">DC Comics</a> notables, including Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, the Flash, Wonder Woman, the Joker, and others.<br />
<br />
The hyper-violent cinematic is the latest creation of <a href="http://www.blur.com/">Blur Studio</a>, also known for its <a href="http://www.swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/24/behind-the-scenes-with-that-swtor-cinematic-trailer/">teaser</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/14/alderaan-stands-up-to-darth-malgus-in-new-e3-trailer-for-swtor/">work</a>. The cinematic sets up <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online">DCUO's</a></em> overarching story, in which the heroes team up with Lex Luthor to stop Brainiac and his latest threat to humanity.<br />
<br />
You can view the trailer, appropriately named "Who Do You Trust," after the cut or at <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/video/exclusive-who-dc-universe/702049">GameTrailers</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/24/soe-and-blur-release-dcuo-story-trailer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>SOE and Blur release DCUO story trailer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/24/soe-and-blur-release-dcuo-story-trailer/">SOE and Blur release DCUO story trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 24 Jul 2010 13:00:00 EST. Just a few days after the preorder bonuses were released and beta signups began for <a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a>, <a href="http://www.soe.com/">Sony Online Entertainment</a> unveiled the <a href="http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/hamill-conroy-lead-all-star-voice-cast-for-dc-universe-online-98934649.html">central lineup of voice actors</a> for the game.<br />
<br />
Some of the names are familiar and unsurprising, but still nice to have confirmed. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mark-hamill">Mark Hamill</a> will be voicing The Joker once again, and <a href="http://www.angelfire.com/ca4/kevinconroy/">Kevin Conroy</a> returns as Batman. SOE highlighted the two returning actors with a short video on the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online"><em>DCUO</em></a> site entitled "<a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/movies.vm?movie=DCUO_voices_072110">The Voices of the Game</a>."<br />
<br />
<a href="http://whedonesque.com/comments/24392">Fans of Joss Whedon's work</a> were interested to see several familiar names in the list: <a href="http://www.gina-torres.com/">Gina Torres</a> as Wonder Woman, <a href="http://www.jamesmarsterslive.com/">James Marsters</a> as Lex Luthor, and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Baldwin">Adam Baldwin</a> as the voice of Superman. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michelle_Forbes"><br />
<br />
Michelle Forbes</a> rounds out the cast list list as the voice of Circe.<br />
<br />
John Blakely, SOE's Vice President of Development, says<em> "We're excited that not only will Mark and Kevin bring their talent back to the DC Universe as part of </em>DC Universe Online<em>, but we've hit the jackpot with a full cast that are veterans of movies, TV shows and games that our fans are crazy about."</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/22/dc-universe-online-promises-all-star-voice-cast/">DC Universe Online promises "all-star voice cast"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 22 Jul 2010 13:00:00 EST. Fans of <a href="http://www.soe.com/">Sony Online Entertainment's</a> highly-anticipated <a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/index.vm"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> title can chew on an additional piece of news to go along with all the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/15/sony-online-entertainment-reveals-new-trailer-for-dc-universe-on/">goodies</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/17/e3-2010-dc-universe-online-takes-it-up-a-notch/">revealed</a> at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/e3">E3</a> last week. Several websites have run unconfirmed reports on the game's pricing model, so we went straight to the source to get the skinny.<br />
<br />
"<em>The revenue model will be subscription based, with a monthly fee of $14.99 per month. The PC version will carry a suggested retail price of $49.99 and the PS3 version will carry a suggested retail price of $59.99</em>," said an <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">SOE</a> public relations spokesperson.<br />
<br />
Rumor has it that the superhero title will also feature some sort of microtransaction model to go along with the traditional subscription fee, but when asked about it directly, SOE responded "<em>we have not confirmed microtransactions at this point</em>." Stay tuned to Massively for more details as they become available.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/21/soe-confirms-subscription-model-for-dcuo/">SOE confirms subscription model for DCUO</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 21 Jun 2010 12:00:00 EST. We've seen SOE's superhero MMO <a href="http://dcuo.station.sony.com/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a>. We saw it <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/28/comic-con-08-hands-on-with-dc-universe-online/">two years ago at the San Diego Comic Con</a> where its physics-based badassery allowed us to pick up cars, lampposts and anything else we could get our costumed hands on, and use them to knock our foes across three city blocks. Two years later we expected to see something substantially new and excited and we were not disappointed.<br />
<br />
Creative Director Jens Anderson took us through a walkthrough of the latest build of the game and we saw boss fights, PvP gameplay and endgame armor sets themed to declare your allegiance to the most popular superheroes in the game. Read on for the latest details!<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/e3-2010-dc-universe-online/">E3 2010: DC Universe Online</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/e3-2010-dc-universe-online/#3089465"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/06/soe-dcuo-e3-2010-00001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/e3-2010-dc-universe-online/#3089466"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/06/soe-dcuo-e3-2010-00002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/e3-2010-dc-universe-online/#3089467"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/06/soe-dcuo-e3-2010-00003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/e3-2010-dc-universe-online/#3089468"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/06/soe-dcuo-e3-2010-00004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/e3-2010-dc-universe-online/#3089469"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/06/soe-dcuo-e3-2010-00005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/17/e3-2010-dc-universe-online-takes-it-up-a-notch/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E3 2010: DC Universe Online takes it up a notch</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/17/e3-2010-dc-universe-online-takes-it-up-a-notch/">E3 2010: DC Universe Online takes it up a notch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 17 Jun 2010 13:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.station.sony.com/">Sony Online Entertainment's</a> Jens Andersen, Creative Director on the studio's forthcoming <a href="http://dcuo.station.sony.com/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> title, is featured in a new video over at <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/video/e3-2010-dc-universe/100701">GameTrailers</a>. The four and a half minute clip, a preview of next week's E3 2010 coverage, highlights a bevy of features for the new superhero title, and also shows off the improved combat animations and mechanics.<br />
<br />
"<em>We took this great combat model from action games, because it pays off in the superhero experience, and we put it together with all the great online features that MMORPGs have, with the community, the progression, and being able to feel that sense of accomplishment that you have as you're leveling up your character</em>," Andersen enthuses.<br />

The video showcases the physicality of <a href="http://dcuo.station.sony.com/"><em>DCUO's</em></a> combat, as well as quite a few cameos from superheroes (and villains) that call the storied 70-year old franchise home. Our friends over at DCUOSource have unearthed an interesting tidbit regarding the forthcoming <a href="http://dcuo.station.sony.com/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> MMORPG. <a href="http://www.station.sony.com/">Sony Online Entertainment's</a> superhero extravaganza has been shrouded in secrecy for awhile now, and speculation has run rampant about what's percolating in the depths of their batcave. Fans have questions about everything from game mechanics to subscription models, and some interesting images of a possible <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dcuo"><em>DCUO</em></a> web site re-design may shed some light on the latter.<br />
<br />
Apparently a web designer has included images of a new <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dcuo"><em>DCUO</em></a> web site in his online portfolio, and as DCUOSource's Vicious points out, one of them contains verbiage relating to a 14-day trial. Could <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">SOE</a> opt for a traditional subscription model for those of us looking to fight alongside the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight?<br />
<br />
Check out the <a href="http://dcuosource.com/index.php/component/content/article/1-latest-news/397-dcuocom">images</a> as well as the resulting <a href="http://dcuosource.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&amp;t=3551">discussion thread</a>.<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/sony-online-entertainment/">Sony Online Entertainment</a> revealed a brand new addition to <a href="http://dcuo.station.sony.com/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> Friday: Bizarro. Even if you're not already familiar with the character, you can pretty much assume that anything with a name like that is going to be probably evil and definitely awesome. So who is this guy? <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online"><em>DCUO</em></a> provides a brief backstory for anyone living in a cave, and for the sake of moving on and getting to the good part, we'll go with that: <em>"In hopes of having a Superman of his very own, Lex Luthor called upon his top scientist Dr. Teng to scan and replicate the hero's genetic structure. Due to complications in the construction of the carbon copy, their results gave birth to a monstrous menace, Bizarro."</em><br />
<br />
Bizarro's the polar opposite of Superman. Where Superman has heat vision and freeze breath, Bizarro has freeze vision and flame breath. Best of all (or worst of all, depending on your outlook) Kryptonite gives Bizarro strength. Following this train of logic, it seems like Bizarro would also be really slow, but that's no fun.<br />

Two weeks ago at E3, the Massively staff had <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/e308-dc-universe-online-roundup/">their first glimpse</a> of <a href="http://www.myspace.com/dcuo"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> gameplay footage. Developers showing the trailer promised players could play equally well whether on a PC or PS3, engage in battles unlike any before and push the limits of the Unreal physics engine that is the technological base of the game. After getting my hands on a pre-Alpha build of the game this week at Comic-con, I can tell you one thing for sure: this game delivers on its promises.<br /><br />I've rarely had so much fun playing an MMO in such an early stage of development. Running up the sides of skyscrapers at superspeed, picking up city buses and smashing them into enemies, encasing the bad guys in blocks of ice and punting them two city blocks, the list goes on. These activities not only make the player feel truly heroic, but create an environment where players can coordinate their attacks with each other to defeat supervillains in all new and unexpected ways.<strong><br /></strong><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/28/comic-con-08-hands-on-with-dc-universe-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Comic-Con 08: Hands-on with DC Universe Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/28/comic-con-08-hands-on-with-dc-universe-online/">Comic-Con 08: Hands-on with DC Universe Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 28 Jul 2008 13:00:00 EST. Jim Lee has just appeared on the stage at Sony's press conference here at E3 to talk about Sony Online's upcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dc-universe-online/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> title. He kicked off his presentation by doing a one-handed pushup (the press conference is going down on the same state that Jack Palance did his famous pushup on), and it only got more exciting from there.<br /><br />Lee told the audience that that creating the MMO based around the DC Comics universe is a dream for him -- not only did he grow up reading comics, but he's also a big <em>Everquest</em> fan -- he was the first Paladin to <a href="http://kyros.info/Paladin/Fiery_Avenger/">get a Firey Avenger</a>. He also said that the game will allow players to create their own superhero and/or supervillian, and then fight alongside some of DC's finest -- against the Joker with Batman, or pull a Bane and help all the bad guys break out of Arkham.<br /><br />Lee also showed off a bit of art from the game, featuring Batman (seen above), Superman, and the Green Lantern taking out baddies in a colorful landscape. We'll keep an eye out for more <em>DCUO</em> info when we speak with Sony later today. <hr />

In this month's <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edge_(magazine)">Edge magazine</a>, executive creative director Jim Lee reveals some new information on the super hero MMO that is due out sometime next year.<br /><br />This game is described by Lee as a "kick-ass hybrid between a traditional MMO and a first-person action console game". Character creation promises to be diverse, and all of the expected MMO features are listed: character leveling, PvP arenas, raids, shared environments as well as instanced zones. While you may not be able to actually play as <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superman">Superman</a> or <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman">Batman</a>, you will be able to meet them in game, and even battle them if you're playing the villain. Not only that, the first two large shared environments that are revealed so far include <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metropolis_%28comics%29">Metropolis</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gotham_City">Gotham City</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/27/dc-universe-online-details-emerge/">DC Universe Online details emerge</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 27 Jun 2008 11:30:00 EST. There are many reasons why <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic-studios">Cryptic Studios</a> is awesome, one of those reasons is for letting us all live out our superhero fantasies -- the other is because of how <a href="http://www.champions-online.com/dev_blog/ask_Cryptic_03-14-08">involved</a> they are with the community. When other developers are <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/15/mark-jacobs-rails-against-official-forums/">eschewing</a> the very medium which subscribers and fans can get intimate with developers -- Cryptic is doing everything they can to make great use of it.<br /><br />Recently, forum posters on the official <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/champions-online"><em>Champions Online</em></a> boards where given a stickied thread where they could hurl as many questions as they wanted at Cryptic. After the proper <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/08/new-champions-online-screens-get-in-your-face/">amount</a> of question firing was complete (probably somewhere around or beyond the 100 range) select few questions were answered in length and the entire thing was posted to the main page on the official <em>CO</em> website. It's all very exciting!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/15/you-ask-cryptic-answers-non-combat-skills/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>You ask, Cryptic answers: Non-combat skills</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/15/you-ask-cryptic-answers-non-combat-skills/">You ask, Cryptic answers: Non-combat skills</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 15 Mar 2008 10:30:00 EST. <em>Every Tuesday think "T" for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/bloggers/mark-turpin/">Turpster</a> and take the "a" in "day", capitalise it, remove the little bit in the middle, turn it upside down and you get a "V". Put the two together and you'll have TV for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/turpstervision/">TurpsterVision</a> -- the best Internet video podcast on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/">Massively</a>! (Never mind that business about it being the only video podcast on Massively...)</em><br /><br />It's that time of the week again folks! For some people out there they have been going through withdraw symptoms since my absence on this week's <a href="http://www.wcradio.com/archives.php?selectArchive=766&amp;autoplay=1">WoW Insider Show</a>. Have no fear, for Super Turpster is here! I have tried to make it up to you guys, even though my schedule is whooping my butt. Thanks to all the folks from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/26/turpstervision-lord-of-the-dings/">last week</a> who voted Bard, you all win a "Turpster-Patented-Internet-High-Five".<br /><br />I find it very tough in this job to ever be fair to an MMO; I only get a week to play it and produce the review. It's always tough to get a sense of how fantastic it is past the starting zone. That in mind, I do urge all of you out there to try every MMO you can get your hands on. There is so much more out there than just <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.wowinsider.com">World of Warcraft</a> (Blasphemy I hear you scream!) Then again on Massively I feel like I am preaching to the choir!<br /><br />Enjoy the show this week; it was a close shave getting it up in time...in more ways than one! (Join us after the break to find out if Turpster is really allowed to make such horrid innuendo.)<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/04/turpstervision-an-episode-of-great-impotence/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>TurpsterVision: An Episode of Great Impotence</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/04/turpstervision-an-episode-of-great-impotence/">TurpsterVision: An Episode of Great Impotence</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 04 Mar 2008 16:00:00 EST. I wanted to start our daily screenshot feature on Massively off with something, well, <em>massive</em>. A memorable, recognizable, and important scene from MMO history.... and while you may all argue with me about what makes this particular shot important, it was the first thing that came to mind. Here we see a group of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-heroes/"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> players gathering at City Hall in Atlas Park to, "salute the memory and inspiration that is Christopher Reeve on the 2nd anniversary of his death." It's rare to see an in-game event that brings players together for a cause other than slaying dragons and similar.<br /><br />But perhaps you have a screenshot of your own that you think expresses a unique or memorable moment in your MMO of choice? <a href="mailto:massivelyscreenshots@gmail.com">Send 'em my way</a> with a description and you may see it posted here for tomorrow's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/one-shots/">One Shots</a>.<br /><br />[via <a href="http://uk.boards.cityofheroes.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&amp;Number=666693&amp;page=0&amp;fpart=1&amp;vc=1">City of Heroes Official European forums</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/02/one-shots-a-tribute/">One Shots: A tribute</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 02 Nov 2007 18:15:00 EST.
