WoW's Stormwind
If you've ever tried to draw a map of the Earth from memory, you know that it's a difficult task, and yet I suspect that most of us could easily sketch out a map of the landmasses and cities of our favorite MMOs. While most MMOs scale significantly smaller than our real-world capitals, they're no less memorable. In fact, some cities practically serve as symbols of the game, from City of Heroes' Paragon City to Guild Wars' Lion's Arch to World of Warcraft's Stormwind. Be they hubs of commerce, zones for party-forming, or home to all your phat loots, we could probably navigate them blindfolded.

Today we ask: What's the most iconic MMO city (and could you map it from memory)?

You may or may not have heard, but we're coming to Planetside to kick some worldwide hide. At least that's the plan, but whatever happens -- win or lose -- I'm just excited to be a part of an epic, cataclysmic in-game event. It's the kind of thing I've always wanted to see more of but somehow I rarely see these sorts of things happen in massively multiplayer online games. There are smaller yearly events that are always fun, sure. It would just be nice to see more events minimally on the scale of City of Heroes' Rikti invasions or today's Planetside Black Ops event.

Whether or not developers haven't really explored this area because they fear player backlash is beyond me. I personally don't see how creating a dynamic world that keeps its players guessing at the next twist or turn isn't worth a little risk. Then again I'm all about dynamic, awe-inspiring, world changing events.

Aikiwoce sent us this pic over on the WoW Insider tipline (here's ours, if you have a tip for us), but it was just too good not to share with you Massively-ers, too (Massives? Massivliers?). Love is in the Air has started up for Valentine's Day in the World of Warcraft, and there is a familiar-looking heart-adorned cube sitting outside of the major cities. Yes, anyone who's played Portal (not an MMO, but my choice for GotY last year-- it was a triumph, and a huge success) will immediately recognize this as a tribute from Blizzard to another terrific PC game.

No wonder Wrath of the Lich King is taking longer than expected-- all the developers at Blizzard must have been spending all their time looking for cake.

World of Warcraft has a ton of special holiday events all year 'round, most of them in homage to real-world events. The Lunar Festival is no exception. Coinciding with Chinese New Year, the Lunar Festival has more to offer players than just eye candy. Inhabiting every major city in Azeroth, on both sides of the fence, stand elders of each race, ready to provide special Coins of Ancestry to those who show respect. These Coins may be redeemed for various novelty items.

And don't forget to check out the fireworks celebration in each city that begins after sunset and runs each hour. This event will run until February 23rd, and today, which marks the actual Lunar New Year, there will be festivities Stormwind, Thunder Bluff, Booty Bay, and Moonglade. With an entire 17-episode season under their belt, Bakasavant Productions is preparing for another action-packed season of Chronicle of the Annoying Quest. Set in World of Warcraft, it is the tale of a paladin, Ellers, that is on a quest to become accepted by his peers in the Holy Order. Rumor has it that Ellers and his trusty sidekick, Guy, are only doing it so that they can get into a bar in Stormwind!

Needless to say, many obstacles get in the way of their goals, including a case of mistaken identity! If you enjoyed this Machinima, you can check out Season 1 on their YouTube page, however, they also offer higher quality viewing in the form of sponsorship on their site, which entitles you to receive a free DVD. In the meantime, you should take a gander at their early episode outtakes, which are quite funny!

I'm not a big fan of sites like cute overload. However, when I encounter creatures like Hat, the Singing Turtle, I'm just overwhelmed with adorable! This is my official petition, Oxhorn. I want more Hat Machinima!

While I'm busy applying for membership to Hat's fan club, check out Hat vs. Barnaby, made in World of Warcraft. When Hat is invited to sing at the Evil Alchemist University, he has no idea that he will be shunned by followers of The Great Critic, Barnaby. As the tale unfolds, a hilarious battle ensues between turtle and crab, taking to the streets of Stormwind. This looks like a job for Mighty Morphin Midget Gnomes!
