Welcome to another edition of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>, the greatest weekly column about <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> that you'll read on Massively today. I can't believe this, but there's a fairly solid chance that I'm digging myself out of another blizzard at this very moment, so I hope you're having fun reading this instead of freezing to death, shovel in hand. Winter is getting on my nerves.<br />
<br />
Next week, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO</em></a> will celebrate its one-year anniversary, and Captain's Log will celebrate with a half-amazed look back at 12 months of Federation funsauce and Klingon, er... hm. Anyway, we'll look ahead this week to <em>STO's</em> future -- both the future we expect, and the future <em>STO</em> needs to ensure it reaches its second, fifth and tenth anniversaries.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/27/captains-log-facing-the-future-of-star-trek-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Facing the future of Star Trek Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/27/captains-log-facing-the-future-of-star-trek-online/">Captain's Log: Facing the future of Star Trek Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 27 Jan 2011 11:00:00 EST. Ahoy, space cadets! According to my space calendar, it's Space Thursday again already. That means it's time for another edition of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>, your weekly peek into <em><strike>Space</strike></em> <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>.<br />
<br />
This week marks the final installment of our ground-combat trilogy. First we <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/10/captains-log-five-basics-of-ground-combat-in-star-trek-online/">covered five basics</a> of ground combat, and last week we <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/24/captains-log-guide-to-melee-combat-in-star-trek-online/">discussed melee combat</a> in some depth. Now we round things out with some miscellaneous tips for upping your game in a space firefight. After I rant a little first.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/01/captains-log-nine-more-tips-for-ground-combat/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Nine more tips for ground combat</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/01/captains-log-nine-more-tips-for-ground-combat/">Captain's Log: Nine more tips for ground combat</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 01 Jul 2010 13:00:00 EST. It's time again for Captain's Log, where we examine the best and the worst <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> has to offer -- and everything in between -- each and every Thursday. Or at least until I replace my <a href="http://memory-alpha.org/wiki/Emotion_chip">emotion chip</a> with a dance champion chip. Then I'm off to conquer <em>Dancing with the Stars</em>. <br />
<br />
This week, I've had a change of heart. I was in the middle of writing about grouping, loneliness and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/03/stos-season-one-update-two-soft-lands-today/">the new squad system</a> in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO</em></a> when the universe -- as the universe is wont to do -- mucked that up. As I ran around trying to take a few screenshots for the grouping column, poor Captain Gil found himself caught in a seemingly endless string of ground-combat missions. And so, if for no other reason than because I snapped a bunch of guys-shooting-each-other-with-phasers pictures, this week's Captain's Log introduces some of the basics of ground combat in <em>STO</em>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/10/captains-log-five-basics-of-ground-combat-in-star-trek-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Five basics of ground combat in Star Trek Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/10/captains-log-five-basics-of-ground-combat-in-star-trek-online/">Captain's Log: Five basics of ground combat in Star Trek Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 10 Jun 2010 12:00:00 EST. Hello again, space cadets! Welcome back to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/captains-log">Captain's Log</a>, where I pretend each week to know a photon torpedo from a warp core. They both blow up sometimes, so what's the difference, right?<br />
<br />
Last week <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/04/15/captains-log-beginners-guide-to-star-trek-online/">we discussed starting out</a> in <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>, from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/21/star-trek-online-character-customization-in-pictures/">creating a character</a> to beginning the tutorial. Let's jump right back into it this week. I'll run you through the rest of the Federation tutorial, adding a few helpful hints as we go. By the end, you'll be ready to set sail in your very own ship ... even if it does look awfully similar to everyone else's ship.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/04/22/captains-log-more-beginners-guide-to-star-trek-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: More beginner's guide to Star Trek Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/04/22/captains-log-more-beginners-guide-to-star-trek-online/">Captain's Log: More beginner's guide to Star Trek Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 22 Apr 2010 15:00:00 EST. Avast, me hearties! Shiver me timber beams, and raise the mainsail matrix! The weather in the Beta Ursae Sector Block has been so nice lately that the crew of the <em>U.S.S. Bob Wiley</em> has a little spring fever. We've been hanging out in the holodeck re-enacting a trio of historical recordings about Caribbean pirates, and the parlance has rubbed off on me a bit.<br />
<br />
Welcome to another edition of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>, ye olde Massively column on the vagaries of <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>. With the Bajoran lilacs in bloom, patrolling seems like such a drag. And with the solar winds wafting so lightly through the Rolor Nebula, <strike>spreading diplomacy throughout the sector</strike> blasting Cardassians into oblivion has lost some of its luster. Spring is a time of new beginnings. (Your humble captain assumes that the rest of the galaxy experiences spring at the same time as the Eastern Seaboard of Planet Earth's United States.) Part 2 of the <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> starship tactics video <a href="http://pc.ign.com/dor/objects/14270158/star-trek-online/videos/startrekonline_trl_starshiptacticspt2_111909.html">premiered over at IGN</a>, and there are a couple concepts clarified over a few subjects -- but <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/19/new-star-trek-online-video-shows-tactical-combat-ui/">as with the last video</a>, it's nothing really new. The gameplay footage that's attached to the explanation is quite compelling however, especially with the boarding parties where you can see the little shuttlecrafts head towards the Romulan ship. Let's take a closer look at each of the concepts the video covers.<br />
<br />
<strong> Power management.</strong><br />
<br />
Power management is going to play a big role, which we known about for a while. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/gallery/star-trek-online-beta-user-interface/2464260/full/">You can see some detailed pictures of part of the power management UI</a> in yesterday's article, located along the bottom of the screen with words like Defense, Attack, and Speed. Say you have 100 units of power, in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO</em></a> you're going to be able to devote 25 of those units to the shields, 10 to auxiliary systems, 50 to weapons, and 15 to the engines. Power allocation will not be immediate, it will have some sort of delay associated with it. That means you'll have to think ahead about your strategic choices.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/20/star-trek-online-ship-tactics-part-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Star Trek Online ship tactics, part 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/20/star-trek-online-ship-tactics-part-2/">Star Trek Online ship tactics, part 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 20 Nov 2009 16:00:00 EST.
