The feature page for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE Online</em></a>'s next major patch <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/crucible"><em>Crucible</em></a> 1.1 has gone live, with a <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/en/crucible/features/">comprehensive list of the features</a> we can expect when it's released on Tuesday January 24th. As the patch has probably now entered feature lockdown, the feature page is now a complete listing of the updates we can expect. The patch finalises the changeover of player owned starbases to the convenient new fuel block system, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/11/six-small-changes-that-will-make-a-big-difference-to-eve-players/">the six changes revealed</a> in Team BFF's last devblog will also be going into effect.<br />
<br />
The neocom will receive its big update with the patch, but the two biggest changes are issues that players have begged <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP</a> to address since 2008. Tech 2 assault frigates are finally being rebalanced to bring them in line with other ships, and alliances will now be able to sign up for faction warfare. Other big changes include a boost to all sizes of Null blaster ammo and the release of new deadspace invulnerability fields for shield users. This summer's lackluster <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/incarna">Incarna</a></em> expansion and the ensuing microtransaction drama took a massive toll on <em><a href="http://www.eve-online.com/">EVE Online</a></em>'s player community and development staff. Players were quitting in droves, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP</a> eventually had to lay off 20% of its staff worldwide. Two years of half-implemented expansions, broken features, and "first steps" that were never iterated on left players <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/11/eve-evolved-expansions-not-excuses/">begging for a content-heavy expansion</a> like <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/apocrypha">Apocrypha</a></em> or those released in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/">EVE</a></em>'s early years. <em>EVE</em> is known for being practically a new game every six months, but since the blockbuster <em>Apocrypha</em> expansion, daily life in New Eden hasn't changed much at all.<br />
<br />
To pull things back from the brink, CCP refocused development on <em>EVE Online</em> and gave developers a free pass to work on hundreds of small features and improvements. The company began flooding us with details on new ships, graphical updates, new gameplay mechanics, and desperately needed balance tweaks, and we loved every bit of it. Although it's mostly small features and gameplay tweaks, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Crucible/">the <em>Crucible</em> expansion feels like a genuine rebirth</a> for <em>EVE Online</em>. The types of changes made show that CCP knows exactly what players want from <em>EVE</em> and that the company is now willing to deliver it. With CCP's renewed focus on internet spaceships, the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Crucible/">Crucible</a></em> expansion feels like the start of a new era in the sandbox.<br />

For much of <em><a href="http://www.eve-online.com">EVE Online</a></em>'s life, warfare has revolved around player-owned structures of one sort or another. When conquerable stations were released at the end of 2003, they became flashpoints for PvP and goals for corporate territorial warfare. This continued even after the release of player-owned starbases in late 2004, as even the most territorial alliance didn't have the manpower to take down a well-defended large starbase. Industrialists held all the cards, and nullsec alliances made deals with them to open their moons for exploitation.<br />
<br />
Eventually, player-built outposts arrived on the scene, and starbases were adopted to fill a military role in system defense. Whichever side in a fight could control the most starbases in a system would win the outpost, and fearsome dreadnoughts were introduced to make starbase sieges possible. Today, starbases take a back seat to wars over infrastructure hubs, territorial claim units and sovereignty blockade units. The war will eventually extend to planets, but until now planetary interaction has been an entirely industrial affair <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/05/eve-evolved-the-eve-online-that-could-be/">without the slightest hint</a> of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/">EVE</a></em>'s typical conflict. With the coming <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Crucible/">Crucible</a></em> expansion, the starbase and customs office systems are due to be overhauled in a way that should lead to more conflict and lay the ground work for <a href="http://www.dust514.com"><em>DUST 514</em></a>.<br />

When <em><a href="http://www.eve-online.com">EVE Online</a></em> launched in 2003, it was a barren game without many of the comforts we enjoy today. The user interface was abysmally worse than today's (if you can imagine such a thing), players with cruisers were top dog, and practically the only activities were mining or blowing up miners. The culmination of years of hard work by a small indie studio, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/">EVE Online</a></em> sold almost entirely on its future potential. When I was introduced to the game by an excited friend in early 2004 during the Castor expansion, he encouraged me to get in on the ground floor because he believed the game was going to be huge. Years later, I find myself introducing the game to thousands of readers on the same premise.<br />
<br />
<em>EVE</em>'s continual success over the years transformed a fresh-faced <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> into a multinational game development giant. And yet, for all that growth and all the updates to <em>EVE</em> over the years, the fact that the game sells largely on future potential is still firmly embedded in both players and developers. Players subscribe not only because they like the game but because they want to support development to reach <em>EVE</em>'s true potential. Two years with very little iteration on existing features <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/26/eve-evolved-the-day-that-eve-online-died/">sent the message</a> that developers weren't trying to reach that potential, but it seems that trend is soon to be completely reversed. With the newly announced <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Crucible/">Crucible</a></em> expansion, CCP will be adding countless small features, graphical updates and iterations that put <em>EVE</em> firmly back on the path to reaching its full potential.<br />

Several weeks ago, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/">EVE Online</a></em> developer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/CCP-Games/">CCP Games</a> restructured its company and announced a new laser focus on in-space features for <em>EVE Online</em>. Since then we've seen an absolute deluge of news updates and devblogs on features due for release in the winter expansion. In the first two of CCP's new In Development video series, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/CCP-Guard/">CCP Guard</a> explored the art department and showed off the new nebula effects, <em>EVE</em>'s sharpened shadows and the new tier 3 battlecruisers.<br />

In <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dInM9k3tTSw">the latest In Development video</a>, Guard talks to the <em>EVE</em> feature teams about the absolutely massive list of balance changes and features coming with the winter expansion. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/CCP-Soundwave/">CCP Soundwave</a> admits that developers have "probably done more rebalancing in the past month than we have in the past two years," before rattling off an impressive list of changes and new features.<br />

Several weeks ago, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/">EVE Online</a></em> developer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/CCP-Greyscale/">CCP Greyscale</a> published possibly the single most important devblog of the past two years. Titled <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=946">Nullsec development: Design goals</a>, the blog laid the ground rules for high-level discussion on <em>EVE</em>'s upcoming nullsec revamp. For those who live in nullsec, territorial warfare and nullsec life represent the true endgame of <em>EVE</em>. It's in these massive lawless regions of space that players forge alliances, build their own empires, and lead massive fleets of ships into enemy territory to kick over some space sandcastles.<br />
<br />
Over the past two weeks, I've been delving into the discussion surrounding the upcoming nullsec revamp and speculating on what changes we might see. I started with a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/21/eve-evolved-bringing-back-the-glory-days/">look back at the early days of nullsec industry</a> and went on to give some ideas aimed at reclaiming those glory days. I followed that up with last week's summary of <em>EVE Online</em>'s empire-building history, the problems faced by today's territorial warfare mechanics, and further speculation on how the system could be radically changed for the better.<br />

It's often said that <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/">EVE Online</a></em> is 99% endgame, with only the tutorials and epic mission arcs really providing directed gameplay. Once you get out into the open world, the game is dominated by sandbox laws and social interaction. This is most clear in the lawless nullsec regions where alliances war over territory and build their own empires in the void.<br />
<br />
Last week I <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/21/eve-evolved-bringing-back-the-glory-days/">looked back at the early days of nullsec industry</a> and examined the problems industry has developed over the years. With a massive nullsec revamp <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/16/eve-online-dev-blog-outlines-major-long-term-changes/">scheduled to begin this winter</a>, I went on to speculate on how the game could be changed to bring back the glory days of nullsec industry. Although adequately incentivised local mining and production could transform player-created empires, those aren't the only areas of gameplay being revisited. Sovereignty mechanics, fleet warfare, small gang warfare, exploration and small-scale territorial control will all eventually be redesigned as part of the massive iterative overhaul.<br />

In years gone by, exploring the unknown far reaches of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE Online</em></a> universe meant setting a course for nullsec. With no way to install a permanent residence in the most lucrative far-off systems, players would launch dangerous expeditions into the deep with the hope of striking it rich. Nullsec was the only place to mine rare ores containing megacyte and zydrine, and piracy wasn't as common as it is today. For putting themselves at the risk of pirates, miners were rewarded with an income stream greater than that of any other profession in the game. It was a golden age in exploration that wasn't to repeat itself until March 2009's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Apocrypha/"><em>Apocrypha</em></a> expansion <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/19/eve-evolved-untangling-the-mystery-of-the-sleepers/">opened 2500 hidden wormhole systems</a> for exploitation.<br />
<br />
Things have changed considerably since those early days of <em>EVE</em>. Player-built starbases and outposts have transformed the face of nullsec, allowing alliances to build themselves an empire in the void. December 2009's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Dominion/"><em>Dominion</em></a> expansion brought a complete revamp of the nullsec sovereignty mechanics, allowing alliances to upgrade their space but dramatically increasing the cost of system ownership. Despite all of these updates and improvements, over the past several years we have somehow lost a lot of what made nullsec great in its glory days. Local industry has been replaced by risk-free logistics, and nullsec's risky but rewarding mining profession is now greatly overshadowed by safe highsec mission-running.<br />

Hello, computer (and players)! Ahhh, the good 'ol developers! You follow them on twitter, you read every one of their forum posts, and you even stalk them in-game. But you know what? Developers are just like us, a fellow human being, right? Wrong! Developers are the key to the future, the hands that create our dreams, the molders that shape our gameplay. Okay, okay -- I'm going a bit overboard, but you have to admit, they are pretty dang cool!<br />
<br />
Luckily for us <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/" target="_blank"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> players, the devs that are working on the game, as well as all of the other projects in development at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic" target="_blank">Cryptic</a>, are very transparent. More often that not, they let us know what they are working on and look to the community to see what we think about particular ideas -- we truly get to help influence what makes it into the game. Aside from posting in the forums, many of them also participate with the community by guest starring on podcasts and meeting up with players when they can.<br />

As I broke <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/19/star-trek-onlines-dine-with-the-devs-event-details/" target="_blank">the news</a> to you all last week, I was privileged to host a Dine with the Devs event that coincided with a visit of some of the <em>STO</em> devs to this year's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/comic-con-2011/" target="_blank">San Diego Comic-Con</a>. While this was not associated with Massively, I figured all of you would like to know what happened and what was said. Hello, computer (and players)! On my way home from work today, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/videos/jason-derulo/514460/ridin-solo.jhtml" target="_blank">Jason DeRulo's Ridin' Solo</a> came up on my iPod's playlist, and I thought to myself, <em>how boring -- who would want to ride solo?</em> Most of us will agree that we have the most fun when we are teamed up with someone while playing. Whether it is for the social interaction or the companionship or just so that we don't have to keep <a href="http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=zerging" target="_blank">zerging</a>, we play MMOs so that we can play with other people from around the world. Our games also allow us to take teaming one step further in the form of guilds. In <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/" target="_blank"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>, joining a fleet is one of the most popular ways to play the game.<br />

Since the early days of closed beta, thousands of fleets have formed inside <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/cryptic" target="_blank">Cryptic's</a> server, fleets that have brought players together from around the world. It truly does not matter whether you speak English or not -- some of the larger fleets out there have members who represent dozens of countries, languages and ethnicities. Whether you are into PvP, roleplay, raiding, PvE, or accolade-hunting, there is a fleet for everyone -- but it doesn't stop there! As time warps on, developers of the game are going to be adding new options and creating new gameplay that will change the way you will interact with your fleet. So what are they?<br />

Because it is stigmatised as a boring and inactive activity, mining is perhaps <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>'s most overlooked profession. While it can be a repetitive and sedate affair, mining is a good way to make ISK during low points in your game time. A lot of miners use the profession to make a little ISK while they chat with friends in-game, read the forum or do some other activity. In the first two parts of this three-part guide to mining in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a>, I looked at some of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/09/eve-evolved-mining-101-the-basics/">the basics of solo or group mining</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/16/eve-evolved-mining-101-mining-efficiency/">how to make the most ISK for your invested time</a>.<br />
<br />
Over the years, I've learned a few tricks and strategies for mining that have come in handy. If the local asteroid belts are stripmined clean and you need somewhere nearby to mine, for example, it's possible to use the mission system to spawn a practically endless supply of low-end ore. If setting up camp in high-security space isn't your thing, it can also be very profitable to run a nomadic mining expedition. Using a starbase as a base of operations, you can set up ore depots and refining stations in either normal space or wormhole space.<br />

This week, <em>EVE</em> player Laci surprised the <em>EVE</em> community with the release of an impressive new guide aimed at new players and industralists. The comprehensive 416-page <a href="http://www.isktheguide.com/">Industrial-Sized Knowledgebase</a> (or ISK for short) covers practically everything a new player could want to know about the game. Until now, the guide had been available only in Hungarian. After intensive translation and design work, the full guide has been released in English.<br />

After what seemed to be a smooth launch, it soon became apparent that <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>'s <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tyrannis"><em>Tyrannis</em></a> expansion had brought with it several broken features. While the planet-scanning interface works fine and looks fantastic, the deployment of command centres was pushed back until June 8th. The materials produced on planets could not possibly be made until June 8th but on May 26th, tier 4 products from planetary interaction began appearing on the market. It wasn't long before <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> players figured out that you could refine NPC-sold starbase structures into high-end planet products. Starbase structures are one of the many things that <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com"><em>CCP</em></a> is switching from being supplied at fixed prices by NPCs to being produced by players through planetary interaction. When new <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> players give up and quit the game, their reasons are usually very similar. A <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/22/eve-evolved-how-do-you-handle-burnout/">lack of drive to play the game is common</a>, with players logging in only to change skills. Similarly, people complain that <a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/208-Eve-Online">the game is boring</a> and isn't really taking them anywhere. Most of these reasons boil down to a basic lack of motivation, purpose and goals. As a sandbox game, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> doesn't really lead the player anywhere after the tutorials and it can be easy to get lost. This is where the <em>EVE</em> community steps in by providing a whole host of player-run corporations to help pilots find their way in <em>EVE</em>.<br />
<br />
As a very social game, I don't think <em>EVE</em> truly takes off <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/02/eve-evolved-finding-the-perfect-corporation-in-five-easy-steps/">until you get into a good corporation</a>. In addition to help and advice, a good corp with some solid corporate goals will offer players a sense of purpose and direction that can be hard to find on your own. The opportunity to be a part of something bigger than yourself and accomplish goals you could never hope to on your own can be a great motivator. Whether your corporation's goal is to build a freighter from scratch, run a massive industrial complex, engage in PvP or even lay claim to a system, it stands a much better chance of being achieved <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/11/eve-evolved-running-your-own-corporation/">when pilots cooperate</a>.<br />

Player housing is one of those features we love to see in an MMO but every game that has it seems to implement it differently. Sometimes it's limited to instanced rooms the player can decorate and sometimes it's a little more functional like shared guild halls. In <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>, the closest thing to widely-available player housing would be <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Starbase">anchorable starbases</a>, which can be configured to serve a variety of functional roles. Originally, their primary purpose was to mine moon minerals and <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Moon_mining">react them to produce advanced materials</a> for Tech 2 production.<br />
<br />
Starbases can be very useful as tactical staging points for PvP operations. With the right modules anchored around them, they can also be configured for use in other industries, from mining and manufacturing to research and deep space exploration. Until recently, they also played a critical role in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a>'s alliance sovereignty warfare as the alliance with the most starbases in a system gained control of it. With that role <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/01/massivelys-eve-dominion-launch-day-roundup/">now fulfilled by Outposts, Infrastructure Hubs and Territorial Claim Units</a>, starbases have mostly returned to their former industrial and tactical uses.<br />

While it's most often lauded for its PvP, not everything in <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> is about shooting people. Research and manufacturing are two of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a>'s most popular PvE professions because of the small time commitments they require. A lot of things in <em>EVE</em> are built from blueprints and through research, you can be one of the people supplying those blueprints. Whether you want to <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Researching_blueprints">improve your own blueprints</a> to increase manufacturing profit margins or make blueprint copies for sale, it's worth looking into doing your own research. Jobs can be set up to run for days on end, taking you as little as a few minutes per week to manage. This can augment your income from active sources like mining, trading or mission-running.<br />

They're making some database changes with the next <em>Apocrypha</em> patch that should improve what you experience in your game client with inventory management, but beyond addressing "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jita">The Jita Problem</a>" there will be a fair number of changes in the next patch. <br /><br />On that topic of speed, players should notice a huge change with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pos">starbase deployment</a> (or hasty tear downs): players will be able to anchor, online, or unanchor offensive and defensive starbase structures in half the time it took previously. (Ninja POS deployment?) Perhaps more significant to some players than others, station reprocessing will be much faster -- apparently refining stacks of items will be up to 25 times faster than before. Three of those corporations were in two alliances, and over 70 accounts have been banned thus far in connection with the exploit.
