When we started into <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-matrix-online/"><em>The Matrix Online</em></a> month last week on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-game-archaeologist/">The Game Archaeologist</a>, one of the comments caught my eye. Massively reader <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/profile/4440149/">stealthrider</a> wrote:

	<em>Please, please do a tribute to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/rarebit/">Rarebit</a>. </em>MxO <em>was his baby, and no one took its death worse than he.<br />

	He did everything for that game, much of it single-handedly. Everything from playing the canon characters and co-writing the story to fixing hundreds of bugs and even creating a new zone from scratch. Not to mention developing and implementing the story missions, new items, the RP item vendors, and pretty much everything else in </em>MxO's<em> final couple of years. He even implemented and moderated a player-created minigame as part of the official story.<br />
	<br />
	He retired from game development in the months before </em>MxO's<em> shutdown. He was </em>that <em>dedicated to this game that he couldn't work on anything else afterward.<br />

I think this sums up how many <em>Matrix Online </em>vets feel about <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/ben-chamberlain">Ben "Rarebit" Chamberlain</a>. So instead of a mere tribute, we drove the MassivelyMobile over to Chamberlain's house (read: send a polite email request), and he graciously said he'd be glad to reminisce with us. So hit that jump to find out the last word on <em>MxO </em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/29/anti-aliased-so-long-and-thanks-for-all-the-woah/">from the dev who held it together</a>!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/17/the-game-archaeologist-jacks-into-the-matrix-online-jamming-wit/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist jacks into The Matrix Online: Jamming with Ben 'Rarebit' Chamberlain</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/17/the-game-archaeologist-jacks-into-the-matrix-online-jamming-wit/">The Game Archaeologist jacks into The Matrix Online: Jamming with Ben 'Rarebit' Chamberlain</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 17 May 2011 12:00:00 EST. Although it is so far out on the scale of probability that it is tipping into impossibility, there <em>is</em> a remote chance that some player in <a href="http://na.aiononline.com/"><em>Aion</em></a> does not know about <a href="http://us.ncsoft.com/en/">NCsoft's</a> cash shop. After all, we are often assaulted with advertisements for new goodies offered at the <a href="https://secure.ncsoft.com/cgi-bin/Store.pl?action=toggleCategory&amp;category=14#aion">NCsoft Store</a> front-and-center on the launchpad; if you have logged into the game any time in the last couple of months, you have seen offerings of cosmetic clothing, exclusive <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/12/aion-the-411-on-2-0-pets/">pets</a>, and weapon skins.<br />
<br />
Now I can understand ponying-up for a character name-change since the user is asking for a smidgen of change in code. Changing gender -- sure, why not? <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/14/paid-server-transfers-coming-to-aion/">Server transfers</a> definitely involve a bit of work, so making this a paid service also makes sense. Cosmetic surgery, however, is harder for me to accept since I have played a game that offered it in-game as a service performed by a specific class. But what about all of the extra items? The little perks, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/27/wings-over-atreia-heat-wave/">fluff</a>, and limited-time deals?<br />
<br />
Grab your wallet and join me past the break for a discussion on fleecing customers (I mean offering deals, really) and to see some items that I personally would like to implement.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/18/wings-over-atreia-milking-the-cash-cow/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Wings Over Atreia: Milking the cash cow</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/18/wings-over-atreia-milking-the-cash-cow/">Wings Over Atreia: Milking the cash cow</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 18 Apr 2011 18:00:00 EST. One of the most common things I hear from people who don't play <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> is that they don't like the game itself but they absolutely love the stories that come out of it. There's something inherently brutal and visceral about the stories players act out every day in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a>'s colossal sandbox. Tales of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/11/eve-online-player-steals-45-000-worth-of-isk-in-massive-investm/">high-profile thefts</a> and political intrigue occasionally creep into the media and grab our attention, but stories of that sort are a lot more common than you'd think. Last year, we told <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/12/eve-evolved-death-of-an-industrialist/">one such story</a> of a player's descent into criminality and revenge taken too far. In last week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-evolved/">EVE Evolved</a>, I began to tell the true tale of that same player in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/10/eve-evolved-the-great-wormhole-heist-part-1/">one of his biggest heists to date</a>. If you haven't read the first part of this story yet, head back to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/10/eve-evolved-the-great-wormhole-heist-part-1/">last week's EVE Evolved</a> before reading on.<br />
<br />
<strong>A matter of time</strong><br />
<br />
Having discovered an opportunity for theft much greater than expected, Scott recognised that he would need help to pull off a successful heist. With the <a href="http://www.massively.com/2009/07/19/eve-evolved-untangling-the-mystery-of-the-sleepers/">wormhole corporation</a>'s assets within Scott's reach, a sense of urgency began to overtake him. Based on discussions with his new corp members, he knew that the group's wormhole tenancy had just begun and that they were still in the process of clearing the starbase up following a frantic move-in. This explained the secure containers littering space -- a temporary measure to be used until an adequate hangar permission scheme could be created.<br />
<br />
In this week's conclusion of the story of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/10/eve-evolved-the-great-wormhole-heist-part-1/">the great wormhole heist</a>, Scott discovers allies in some unexpected places and finds out first-hand whether there really is no honour amongst thieves.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/17/eve-evolved-the-great-wormhole-heist-part-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: The great wormhole heist, part 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/17/eve-evolved-the-great-wormhole-heist-part-2/">EVE Evolved: The great wormhole heist, part 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 17 Apr 2011 18:00:00 EST. 	<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-evolved/"><img border="1" hspace="4" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2011/04/whheist-title.jpg" vspace="4" /></a></div>
Several years ago, <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>'s Community Manager <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/CCP-Wrangler">CCP Wrangler</a> made a statement that I felt really crystalised the sentiment behind the game. He said that <em>"</em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/">EVE</a><em> isn't designed to just look like a cold, dark and harsh world; it's designed to be a cold, dark and harsh world."</em> Although most of us are content to indulge ourselves in PvP, market games and other traditional modes of gameplay, a criminal underworld runs beneath that innocuous surface. A significant few <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/08/eve-evolved-outlaws-of-eve/">carve their own illicit destinies</a> from the void, stealing and cheating their way to the top.<br />
<br />
Whether these space-faring cyber-criminals are in it for fame and riches, political influence, or their own personal goals, the stories of their actions in <em>EVE</em>'s colossal sandbox never fail to grip us. High-profile thefts like the <a href="http://eve.klaki.net/heist/">Guiding Hand Social Club heist</a> of 2005, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/26/eve-online-player-run-bank-1-2-trillion-isk-in-the-red-freezes/">closure of EBank</a>, and last year's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/11/eve-online-player-steals-45-000-worth-of-isk-in-massive-investm/">Titans4U scandal</a> have been made very public, and smaller-scale crimes occur every day in New Eden. Last year, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/12/eve-evolved-death-of-an-industrialist/">we brought you the true tale</a> of one player's revenge taken too far -- a story of corporate infiltration, social deception and utter destruction. Although this was Scott's first foray into criminality, it was most certainly not his last. The events in this week's story are true, but the names of the players and corporations involved have been changed.<br />
<br />
In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-evolved/">EVE Evolved</a>, Scott returns as I begin to tell the true story of his huge wormhole heist.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/10/eve-evolved-the-great-wormhole-heist-part-1/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: The great wormhole heist, part 1</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/10/eve-evolved-the-great-wormhole-heist-part-1/">EVE Evolved: The great wormhole heist, part 1</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 10 Apr 2011 18:00:00 EST. Whatever happened to <a href="http://theagency.station.sony.com/verification.vm"><em>The Agency</em></a>? Inquiring minds want to know, and since <a href="http://soe.com">Sony Online Entertainment's</a> internal memos haven't been given the WikiLeaks treatment, we'll have to take company president John Smedley at his word. "<em>There was a moment in time in our company where we looked at our own stuff with a clear eye and saw we have to do better</em>," Smedley told Kotaku in a <a href="http://kotaku.com/5707624/is-the-future-of-pc-gaming-massive-and-online">recent interview</a>. Translation: it ain't ready 'til it's ready.<br />

While the spy MMO's launch would seem to be quite a ways off, fans should be glad to hear that it hasn't been shelved entirely. We haven't seen hide nor hair of the title since <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/16/e3-2010-the-agency-blows-up-in-our-faces-and-its-a-good-thi/">E3 2010</a>, but hopefully the extra time will serve to boost the game's stock in the same vein as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">SOE's</a> other upcoming MMO. <a href="http://dcuniverseonline.com"><em>DC Universe</em></a>, originally scheduled to launch last November, has apparently benefited from the extra test cycles if the scuttlebutt surrounding yesterday's NDA-drop is to be believed.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/07/soes-the-agency-delayed-until-late-2011/">SOE's The Agency delayed until late 2011</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 07 Dec 2010 16:00:00 EST. Of all the things that define <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>, it's the stories of criminality that stand out the most. The criminal underworld of New Eden is so deeply ingrained in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> that CCP even made a selling point of it <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/05/ccp-releases-new-eve-trailer-reveals-new-contest/">in the latest official trailer</a>. Last week, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/12/eve-evolved-death-of-an-industrialist/">I began to tell the true tale</a> of one <em>EVE</em> pilot's thirst for revenge and the corporate infiltration techniques he used to get close to his target. In this week's conclusion of the story, Scott's plans for revenge come to fruition. But is Scott really the victim he believes himself to be, or has greed blinded him to what he's doing? If you haven't read part 1 of the story, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/12/eve-evolved-death-of-an-industrialist/">skip back to read last week's EVE Evolved column</a> before reading on.<br />
<br />
<strong> Newbies again</strong><br />
<br />
Once in Zeeqo's corp, Scott and his crew began the slow task of setting their target up for a colossal fall. Simply destroying Zeeqo's mining barge could be a swift and fitting retribution, but Scott had a much harsher punishment in mind. Zeeqo would be made to pay for his mistake several times over. The plan for retribution hinged on Zeeqo's weekend freighter runs to Jita, a time at which he flew his most expensive and indefensible ship. This gave the three infiltrators only five days to befriend their target and work out how best to capitalise on his weekly haul.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/19/eve-evolved-death-of-an-industrialist-part-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: Death of an Industrialist, part 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/19/eve-evolved-death-of-an-industrialist-part-2/">EVE Evolved: Death of an Industrialist, part 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 19 Sep 2010 18:00:00 EST. It's often said that the <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> universe is a dark and harsh place, the market overflowing with con-artists and the skies filled with pirates looking for some easy prey. The sandbox style of New Eden enables emergent gameplay like <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/14/eve-evolved-eves-economic-underworld/">market manipulation</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/27/eve-evolved-corporate-infiltration-for-fun-and-profit/">corporate infiltration</a>, spying <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/21/eve-evolved-using-courier-contracts-for-theft/">and theft</a>. When faced with the choice, some players choose to be ruthless outlaws who will stop at nothing to further their own goals. Political puppet-masters pull the strings on the alliance war machines from behind the scenes, spies infiltrate corporations to gather intelligence, and thieves plot their way to riches.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/05/ccp-releases-new-eve-trailer-reveals-new-contest/">The latest official game trailer</a> makes a big point of this side of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a>, telling an incredible story of revenge and theft that closely mirrors the reality of New Eden. As if to highlight the point made by the trailer, this week <em>EVE</em> player Bad Bobby confirmed that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/11/eve-online-player-steals-45-000-worth-of-isk-in-massive-investm/">he'd stolen a total of 850 billion ISK</a> from players in the investment market. Concluding a plan set in motion years ago, Bobby pulled off the theft last week of his supposedly secured Titans4U company. In keeping with this recent theme of theft and corruption, this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-evolved/">EVE Evolved</a> is a story of revenge, corporate infiltration, social deception and utter destruction. I've embellished the story in places and names have been changed to protect the privacy of all those involved, but the events described are real.<br />
<br />
In this week's article, I begin to tell the very real tale of an <em>EVE</em> player's revenge -- a precision strike against an industrialist who made one fatal mistake.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/12/eve-evolved-death-of-an-industrialist/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: Death of an industrialist</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/12/eve-evolved-death-of-an-industrialist/">EVE Evolved: Death of an industrialist</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 12 Sep 2010 18:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> developer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> typically has a presence at major industry events like the upcoming <a href="http://www.gdconf.com/index.html">Game Developers Conference</a>, but the session that's caught our attention so far <em>isn't</em> a presentation from the devs -- it's actually from a member of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> community. That GDC 2010 speaker is Alexander Gianturco -- better known to most <em>EVE Online</em> players as Goonswarm's spymaster, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/the-mittani">The Mittani</a>. Others may know the infamous player as the "<a href="http://www.tentonhammer.com/features/mittani">Sins of the Solar Spymaster</a>" <em>EVE</em> columnist at <a href="http://www.tentonhammer.com">Ten Ton Hammer</a>. Gianturco will give a lecture at GDC 2010 titled "<a href="https://www.cmpevents.com/GD10/a.asp?option=G&amp;V=3&amp;id=664627">Uniquely Ruthless: The Espionage Metagame of <em>EVE Online</em></a>" that will give an insider's perspective on the political machinations possible in the game's sandbox of New Eden. <br />
<br />
His talk will hit on topics like the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/05/further-developments-in-eves-grand-theft-alliance-drama/">disbanding of the Band of Brothers alliance</a>, how the espionage metagame has changed over time, and of course the myriad aspects of <em>EVE</em>'s sandbox that allow players to even engage in such pursuits. The session description for Uniquely Ruthless: The Espionage Metagame of <em>EVE Online</em> states that Gianturco's presentation should be of general interest to anyone with a love of spies and their stories.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/25/eve-online-spymaster-the-mittani-to-present-at-gdc-2010/">EVE Online spymaster The Mittani to present at GDC 2010</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 25 Jan 2010 13:00:00 EST. Goonswarm spymaster <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/the-mittani">The Mittani</a> took a different approach with his latest <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> column at <a href="http://www.tentonhammer.com">Ten Ton Hammer</a>, and conducted an interview with a corporate saboteur titled "The Most Dangerous Agent". While it should be stated that most players in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> do not engage in espionage, it's a career path of sorts that any player <em>could</em> potentially engage in, provided they have the combination of intelligence, social skills, and dedication needed to succeed. It's that aspect of dedication which often goes unmentioned -- the challenge of maintaining long-term duplicity. <br />
<br />
The Mittani's interview with a player anonymously referred to as "Darwin's Accelerator" explains how a player with destructive aims greater than simply engaging a few enemy ships at a time can use intel to devastating effect, wiping out entire fleets. Maintaining a persona that fits in with the target organization and thus won't arouse suspicion, however, can be difficult if the infiltrator genuinely dislikes the members that comprise the corporation or alliance.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/20/the-challenges-and-rewards-of-espionage-in-eve-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The challenges and rewards of espionage in EVE Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/20/the-challenges-and-rewards-of-espionage-in-eve-online/">The challenges and rewards of espionage in EVE Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 20 Nov 2009 12:00:00 EST. Rumors and speculation <a href="http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=56275">have been floating around</a> this week about the Jedi Knight, so no big surprise when <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/BioWare/">BioWare</a> reveals that, yes, Knights of the Jedi persuasion are in fact a player class in <a href="http://www.swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a>. The news comes with <a href="http://www.swtor.com/info/holonet/classes/jedi-knight">all the expected class page accoutrements</a> such as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/gallery/star-wars-the-old-republic-1/2407556/full/">screens</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/gallery/star-wars-the-old-republic-concept-art/2407551/full/">concept art</a> and a few videos showing off three Jedi Knight attacks. It's all standard practice information release at this point, which only slightly dilutes the excitement of the announcement.<br />
<br />
The videos all show the proper level of Jedi powerhousing that you'd expect, although we're not entirely cool with all the droid destroying that's happening. Sure, we're aware that unlike Sith, Jedi are limited to disabling droids and pushing things around but that's no excuse to pick on the little helpless mechanical people. Yes, we said people -- robots are people too!<br />
<br />
In all seriousness, this is probably the class reveal everyone has been waiting for and/or expecting all along. Jedi and Sith were a given, so from here on out it's almost entirely anyone's guess. Spy? Rogue? Droids? Wookiees? Albino Ewoks? Okay, that's a little silly, nobody wants to play a rogue over a spy.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-old-republic-concept-art/">Star Wars: The Old Republic Concept Art</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-old-republic-concept-art/#1255574"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/01/ca_20090102_colorstudy03_1600x780_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-old-republic-concept-art/#2004016"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/05/ca4_800x257_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-old-republic-concept-art/#1255575"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/01/ca_20090102_human_male_concept_863x1076_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-old-republic-concept-art/#2243369"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/08/ca1_800x450_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-old-republic-concept-art/#1255576"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/01/ca_20090102_ithorian_concept_1600x1375_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-old-republic-1/">Star Wars: The Old Republic Screenshots</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-old-republic-1/#1357047"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/02/ss_20090213_004_1600x900_thumbnail.jpg" alt="A Hutt" title="A Hutt" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-old-republic-1/#1357048"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/02/ss_20090213_005_1600x900_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Cantina of the Hutt Palace" title="Cantina of the Hutt Palace" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-old-republic-1/#1111058"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/10/ss_20081021_droidswithblasters_full_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Droids with blasters" title="Droids with blasters" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-old-republic-1/#1111059"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/10/ss_20081021_tomblightsaberduel_full_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Tomb Lightsaber Duel " title="Tomb Lightsaber Duel " /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-old-republic-1/#1111060"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/10/ss_20081021_trooperopensfire_full_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Trooper opens fire" title="Trooper opens fire" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/30/jedi-knight-officially-steps-into-the-old-republic-spotlight/">Jedi Knight officially steps into The Old Republic spotlight</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 30 Oct 2009 12:00:00 EST. It's possible for high-level directors of an alliance to disband the organization, and this is <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&amp;threadID=1205168">exactly what happened today</a> to Curatores Veritatis Alliance. CVA was an alliance loyal to the game's NPC faction the <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Amarr">Amarr Empire</a> and had a long history of <a href="http://www.cva-eve.org/providence.html">enforcing rule in lawless space</a> and resisting rival player organizations of Minmatar freedom fighters -- <a href="http://www.ushrakhan.com/portal/">notably Ushra'Khan</a> -- who they branded as terrorists. In short, CVA has played a significant role in the player-driven setting of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a>. <br /><br />At this point, speculation as to <em>how</em> CVA was disbanded is rampant. The concept of a mole using high-level access to destroy an alliance from within <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/05/further-developments-in-eves-grand-theft-alliance-drama/">is not unprecedented</a> in the game, although some players are asserting an account hack took place. <em>EVE</em> pilot "BULLETPROOF 50CENT" of the corporation Traceless Representatives of Anonymous Players (TRAP) has claimed credit for the disintegration of CVA. <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&amp;threadID=1205196">He stated</a>: <em>"I am known as bullet, just a small, relatively unknown member of a covert organization, created by and dedicated to the taking down of what we saw as the single largest evil in EVE -- CVA." </em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/28/major-eve-online-alliance-cva-disbanded-espionage-or-hack/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Major EVE Online alliance CVA disbanded: espionage or hack? </em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/28/major-eve-online-alliance-cva-disbanded-espionage-or-hack/">Major EVE Online alliance CVA disbanded: espionage or hack? </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 28 Oct 2009 19:30:00 EST. The developers have stated that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/earthrise"><em>Earthrise</em></a> will be a sandbox game, with a large part of the player experience based on what guilds try to accomplish in the post-apocalyptic setting of Enterra. Given this emphasis on player-driven content, <a href="http://www.mastheadstudios.com">Masthead Studios</a> has been running a Community Consensus over the past few weeks where the devs <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/01/earthrise-developers-seeking-player-input/">seek input from <em>Earthrise</em> fans</a> on various aspects of the game's design. <br /><br />Today Masthead Studios wants to hear what the community thinks about alts. In most MMOs having extra character slots is expected, but alt play in a sandbox game where <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/01/hints-of-espionage-in-earthrise/">players will engage in espionage</a> could get out of hand. Would the ability to easily for any player to create a cell of spy alts unbalance the game, or should there be a tight limit on character slots per account?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/19/earthrise-developers-seeking-community-input-on-alts/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Earthrise developers seeking community input on alts</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/19/earthrise-developers-seeking-community-input-on-alts/">Earthrise developers seeking community input on alts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 19 Oct 2009 19:00:00 EST. Of all the <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> stories I've heard over the years, none have impressed and inspired me as much as those detailing a well-planned corporate heist. These aren't your <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/30/wtb-scammer-tears-the-end-of-freeform-contract-scams-in-eve-onl/">run-of-the-mill contract scammers</a> or corp hanger thieves. A professional corporate spy can earn the deepest levels of trust, destroy a corporation from the inside out, rob its members of their most prized possessions and then disappear without a trace. They're the people that pull the strings of war in the background, pitting alliances against each other to meet their own ends. The <a href="http://eve.klaki.net/heist/">Guiding Hand Social Club's famous 2005 heist</a> remains to this day possibly the single most impressive story in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> history and serves as a benchmark of value and style for a heist that has seldom since been matched.<br /><br />When I'm not busy writing about <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span> or running sleeper anomalies with my buddies, I find myself delving more and more into the dark side of <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span>. From <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/16/eve-evolved-wormhole-piracy-101/">wormhole piracy</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/21/eve-evolved-using-courier-contracts-for-theft/">courier contract theft</a> to full-blown corporate infiltration, this year has bestowed on me a great deal of experience in the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/14/eve-evolved-eves-economic-underworld/">dirty underworld</a> of <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span>. In this article, I explain how to infiltrate a corp successfully and capitalise on the opportunities it throws at you.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/27/eve-evolved-corporate-infiltration-for-fun-and-profit/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: Corporate Infiltration for fun and profit</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/27/eve-evolved-corporate-infiltration-for-fun-and-profit/">EVE Evolved: Corporate Infiltration for fun and profit</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 27 Sep 2009 18:00:00 EST. As part of our extensive E3 tour through SOE's newest games, launched and upcoming, we got a fairly good look at some gameplay footage in <em><a href="http://theagency.station.sony.com/verification.vm">The Agency</a></em>. Of course, you know <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-agency"><em>The Agency</em></a> as the spy MMO that had everyone talking at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/27/e308-walking-through-the-agencys-trailer/">last year's E3</a>. With this new gameplay footage, you lucky readers (or, viewers) get to see what to expect <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/25/dc-universe-online-and-the-agency-get-a-2010-release-date/">when the game launches</a>.<br /><br />Click through after the jump to see the game's lead producer, Lorien Gremore, show us around a bit with combat, stealth, minigames and even a bit of female persuasion tactics*.<br /><br />* Not from Lorien<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/e3-2009-the-agency/">E3 2009: The Agency</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/e3-2009-the-agency/#2054874"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/06/115_soe-e3_1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/e3-2009-the-agency/#2054892"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/06/118_soe-e3_1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/e3-2009-the-agency/#2054875"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/06/119_soe-e3_1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/e3-2009-the-agency/#2054893"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/06/120_soe-e3_1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/e3-2009-the-agency/#2054879"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/06/121_soe-e3_1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div> <hr />

There were no announcements for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-agency"><em>The Agency</em></a> at today's Sony press event at the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2009">E3 Expo</a>, but we've noticed that there's new content to be found on the game's official site. <br /><br />A quick search of <em>The Agency</em> site reveals some new screenshots and wallpapers, concept art, info about both playable factions -- U.N.I.T.E. (spies) and Paragon (mercenaries) -- and a tongue-in-cheek 'evaluation quiz' for recruitment to each faction. In addition to the new art assets, they've also got <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/29/the-agency-new-cg-trailer-builds-excitement-leading-up-to-e3/">their latest trailer</a> up on the site as well. If you've been looking forward to some spies-and-mercenaries gameplay in an MMO, check out what's new on <a href="http://theagency.station.sony.com/"><em>The Agency</em>'s revamped site</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/02/the-agency-declassifies-intel-for-revamped-game-site/">The Agency declassifies intel for revamped game site</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 02 Jun 2009 19:00:00 EST. Either way, you can be sure we'll bring you some juicy info after we've cornered a developer and prodded him or her with a blunt microphone.<br /><br />Hopefully, this news will tide you over. An exclusive CG trailer that originally premiered on X-Play <a href="http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/695922/World-Premiere-Exclusive-The-Agency-CG-Trailer.html">just made it up to the G4TV website</a>. We think it's fair to say this is the most we've heard about the spy-MMO in a long time and it has us excited about what we might find out at <a href="http://www.e3expo.com/">E3 2009</a>.<br /><br />We have known for a while that <a href="http://www.station.sony.com/">SOE</a> was aiming to release <em>The Agency</em> on both <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/27/new-details-emerge-about-the-agency/">the PC and PS3</a>, but we weren't sure if they could pull it off. Apparently, development for the console is going well because Oli got a chance to watch two developers play a mission together on both platforms and says it looked pretty good. When asked about whether or not the game would use the subscription or F2P/RMT model, Hal responded by saying that they are aiming for the lowest barrier of entry for PS3 players, which probably lends itself to the latter.<br /><br />The interview uncovers many details on planned methods of progression, including a mashup of reputation, influence, skill/item usage (&agrave; la <em><a href="http://darkfallonline.com">Darkfall</a></em>?), operatives, and XP unlocks. Operatives are one of the more difficult concepts to understand and the author explains them in an interesting way: <em>"...operatives are loot, and hopelessly irresistible loot at at that. Pursuing and sorting an ideal roster will be akin to assembling a perfect gear set in an RPG - if your gear argued with itself, made more gear for you while you were offline, and you could equip 100 pieces at once at max level."</em><br /><br />To learn more about the game including their plans for missions, the environment, PvP, and even gambling mini-games, check out <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/the-agency-preview_4">the monster three-page interview</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/25/infiltrating-soe-to-get-a-sneak-peak-of-the-agency/">Infiltrating SOE to get a sneak peek of The Agency</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 25 May 2009 17:00:00 EST. It's only played online, is class-based, has achievement unlocks which open up new gear possibilities, and after the last update there's a backpack with room for 50 items and mention (read: unconfirmed) of tradeable items. In some ways, <em>TF2</em> is an FPS for MMO lovers -- or just those who use way too many acronyms. <br /><br />The comparisons between <em>Team Fortress 2</em> and MMOs aren't lost on some of the more inventive <em>TF2</em> players out there like <a href="http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/member.php?u=546217">goldenhearted</a> who's made <a href="http://www.garrysmod.com/">Garry's Mod</a> mockups of a <a href="http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=819874">fictional "<em>Team Fortress 2</em> RPG"</a>. The game, which they are describing as spy-fi, is set on a post world war three earth that is ruled by an oppressive global government and promises to feature 3rd person fast-paced combat.<br /><br />Although most of the information has been previously available, the updated site does contain useful information such as reiterating that the game will be subscription based, contains PvE content as well as PvP and will rely heavily on instances in order to provide battles that will allow 10 players on each side. Perhaps most importantly, the site confirms that the game <a href="http://hi-rez.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/72">does not feature elves</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/24/global-agenda-answer-center-updated/">Global Agenda answer center updated</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 24 Apr 2009 20:00:00 EST. The game is set in the 22nd century and features fast paced PvP action in a world that has been devastated by the third world war and is now governed by a single world order, the Commonwealth.<br /><br />The story chronicles Steven, who is a 17 year old growing up in Commonwealth Prime. This is a city where everybody is controlled down to the level of having a prescribed routine that they must stick to perfectly and without question. Steven tries to break this routine in little ways whenever he can but his actions, however, have consequences.<br /><br />You can read the story over at <a href="http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm?feature=2957&amp;page=1&amp;game=339&amp;bhcp=1">MMORPG.com</a>, and don't forget to check out our <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/global-agenda">previous coverage</a> of <em>Global Agenda</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/23/global-agenda-fiction-the-utopian/">Global Agenda fiction: The Utopian</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 23 Apr 2009 13:00:00 EST. Information on <em><a href="http://theagency.station.sony.com/">The Agency</a></em> has thinned out over the past few months. Still, nothing lasts forever, and like a cool breeze in the summer, a gust of sweet new information has wafted out via an interview with Hal Milton <a href="http://theagency.massivehq.com/special-features/in-studio-briefing-part1">on The Agency HQ fansite</a>.<br /><br />While no new media comes with said interview, there's plenty of information on special role (<em>The Agency's</em> term for classes) abilities, character progression and even some talk of bouncing bullets off walls. In fact, there's so much interview that The Agency HQ has <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/08/the-agencys-character-advancement-stays-true-to-skill-based-gam/">decided to parse it out</a> over the coming weeks. Hopefully we'll get some new screens or even a gameplay video by the end of it all.<br /><br />So until that time comes, we'll all just have to play spy around our house with BB guns and bond music in the background. Everyone does that, right?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/09/the-agency-interview-informs-on-character-progression-and-skills/">The Agency interview informs on character progression and skills</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 09 Feb 2009 10:00:00 EST. One of the oldest and best known alliances has broken apart in <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> today. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/band-of-brothers">Band of Brothers</a> (BoB) has disbanded, or been disbanded, under circumstances which have not fully yet come to light. Band of Brothers is well-known for their role in "<a href="http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2008/09/09/the-great-war/">The Great War</a>" in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> for their fierce opposition to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/goonswarm">GoonSwarm alliance</a> and their allies over the years. Through that war they claimed such firsts as the first Titan ship kill through their conflict with Ascendant Frontier, and have been well-known amongst the media.<br /><br />Current rumors suggest that this was a GoonSwarm infiltration, but as of this posting this is unconfirmed. Multiple sources suggest that a director of the alliance has defected to GoonSwarm, stealing billions worth of assets, and compromising the sovereignty that Band of Brothers had previously established.<br /><br />Massively.com will keep you up to date as more information is known about this major <em>EVE</em> event.<br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> GoonSwarm has released <a href="http://go-dl.eve-files.com/media/0902/mittani.mp3">a audio file (NSFW)</a>, allegedly explaining what happened. This account is still, however, unconfirmed.<br /><br />(Thanks, Six Strangelove!)<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/04/rumor-band-of-brothers-breaks-apart-in-eve-goonswarm-responsib/">Rumor: Band of Brothers breaks apart in EVE, GoonSwarm responsible</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 04 Feb 2009 22:50:00 EST. While most conflicts play out in sweeping alliance warfare, with its requisite fleet battles involving hundreds of players, some alliances also choose to face one another in arena combat with the rapt attention of many thousands of their fellow pilots: the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/31/massively-interviews-crovan-about-eve-alliance-pvp-tournament-vi/">Alliance PvP Tournament</a>. <br /><br />The Alliance Tournament in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> provides a way for players to demonstrate what they're capable of under controlled conditions, and offers a shot at fame or notoriety among the playerbase. In some cases, alliances may face off in the PvP tournament to settle a score in a very public way. The rules of engagement in place ensure that all alliance teams are on equal ground with one another. <em>EVE</em> players can be devious though, if nothing else... as one match this past weekend proved: one alliance competitor assassinated his team's captain once the match had begun, and then self-destructed his own ship. The would-be saboteur, ironically named "Happy Joymaker", later announced he had infiltrated the alliance for the express purpose of a public execution of his target.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/01/eve-pvp-tournament-assassination-machiavellian-or-bad-form/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE PvP Tournament assassination: Machiavellian or bad form?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/01/eve-pvp-tournament-assassination-machiavellian-or-bad-form/">EVE PvP Tournament assassination: Machiavellian or bad form?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 01 Feb 2009 20:00:00 EST. One of the big lures to <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> is the fact that its PvP isn't just shoehorned into consensual duels and battlegrounds. Instead, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> PvP can occur anywhere whether you like it or not and punishments are levied after-the-fact for engaging in unsanctioned combat in designated safe areas. In <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/19/eve-evolved-pvp-masterclass-introduction/">the previous three parts</a> of this exhaustive guide on where you can take your PvP career, I described the different types of PvP <em>EVE</em> has to offer from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/26/eve-evolved-pvp-masterclass-gang-warfare/">small gang warfare</a> to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/02/eve-evolved-pvp-masterclass-fleet-warfare/">massive territorial fleets</a>. In this final part, I explore <em>EVE</em>'s evil side as I talk about piracy and corporate infiltration.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Griefing?:</span><br />In most MMOs, stealing from other players or indiscriminately killing them for fun or profit can be considered griefing and may be against the rules <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/21/dutch-court-convicts-2-minors-of-stealing-virtual-items/">or worse</a>. In the cold, harsh universe of New Eden, however, piracy and theft are just another facet of the complex player-based gameplay. From <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/25/surviving-gatecamps-in-eve-online/">the common gatecamping pirate</a> to the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/7-deadly-sins-of-eve-online/978792/">criminal masterminds</a> behind the Guiding Hand Social Club heist, players of all kinds are drawn into the criminal underworld of <em>EVE Online</em>.<br /><br />If piracy, theft and corporate infiltration sounds like your cup of tea, continue reading as I delve into the dark side of <em>EVE Online</em>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/09/eve-evolved-pvp-masterclass-the-dark-side/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: PvP masterclass - The dark side</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/09/eve-evolved-pvp-masterclass-the-dark-side/">EVE Evolved: PvP masterclass - The dark side</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 09 Nov 2008 20:00:00 EST. The concept of being a spy or saboteur is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/14/eve-evolved-freeform-professions/">a profession of sorts</a> that arose in the game. There aren't any game mechanics that necessarily enable spying or make it into a viable profession, nor are there any rules that prohibit most of these activities. <br /><br />Wes from <a href="http://www.eve-tribune.com">EVE Tribune</a> recently wrote a piece called "Metagaming", dealing with how espionage can impact rival corporations and alliances in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE.</em></a> Wes asks, <em>"Why is everyone so paranoid about spies and metagaming?"</em> then goes on to explain how espionage in <em>EVE</em> works, categorizing spies by their modus operandi:<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/12/eves-spies-and-metagamers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE's spies and metagamers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/12/eves-spies-and-metagamers/">EVE's spies and metagamers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 12 Oct 2008 12:00:00 EST. In some cases, the wardec may be provoked -- another corp's pilot killed or harassed, perhaps one ninja salvaging too many, and the next thing you know Concord sends you an email notifying you of hard times ahead. Then again, wardecs can also simply be used for kicks and consequence-free highsec kills. Potentially, a war declaration can also be a form of ransoming, a way for aggressors to extort money as a 'fee' to retract the wardec. Regardless of its cause, the situation remains the same: your opponents are free to fire upon you in high security space without <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/concord">triggering a response from Concord. </a><br /><br />For a newer player, a feeling of panic can sink in. That warm, comfy security blanket of highsec no longer offers its sheltering protection from harm. Perhaps for the first time, there's <em>real</em> risk involved in playing the game. That's an angle of war declarations that writer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/sam-guss">Sam Guss</a> discusses in a piece for MMORPG.com called "EVE Online: Surviving Your First War." (Guss is also a writer at <a href="http://www.eve-mag.com">EVE-Mag</a>). But that's really just the backdrop. He recounts his own experience with being wardecced, from the surprise of the initial wardec to the sobering 24-hour countdown to war against far more experienced PvP-ers.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/05/a-newbies-first-war-declaration-in-eve-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A newbie's first war declaration in EVE Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/05/a-newbies-first-war-declaration-in-eve-online/">A newbie's first war declaration in EVE Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 05 Oct 2008 10:00:00 EST. Perhaps it's this latter tendency that prompted the latest announcement from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games.</a> They're branding the monkeywrenching of rival corporations during wartime as an exploit. <br /><br />GM Grimmi states:<em> "The practice of insta-joining/leaving warring corporations for the purpose of surprising war targets, or getting them in trouble with CONCORD, is considered an exploit from here on. Reports of this will be investigated on a case by case basis and warnings will be issued at the discretion of the GM. Repeated incidents may result in bans on accounts involved."</em> This doesn't seem to apply to 'normal' corp infiltrations, though it does beg the question of why a corporation at war would even be accepting new recruits at all. What's the protocol in your corp, do you continue to accept applicants into the fold during a wardec, or is the risk of alt <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/15/the-7-deadly-sins-of-eve-online/">spying and sabotage</a> too great?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/27/eve-exploit-warning-affects-corp-infiltration-practices/">EVE exploit warning affects corp infiltration practices</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 27 Aug 2008 12:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">EVE Online</span></a> is a game often lauded for its sandbox style open-ended gameplay. Some of the best parts of the game have been entirely developed by the players and this trend continues in the field of professions. At launch, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp/">CCP</a> advertised the professions miner, trader, bounty hunter and pirate. Little did they know that players would add <a href="http://eve.klaki.net/heist/">double-agent</a>, <a href="http://eve.hubau.be/index.php?page=about">stock broker</a>, <a href="http://www.achaeon.com/eve/">artist</a> and many others to that list.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">What makes a profession freeform?:</span><br />Put simply, a freeform profession is any job a person can fill that wasn't explicitly created by the game's developers. While <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/08/eve-evolved-mining-the-forgotten-profession/">mining</a> and mission-running were deliberately created by CCP, there are plenty of professions that the players themselves came up with. In <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span></a>'s hyper-capitalistic world, everything and everyone has a price and if there's a demand for something, you can make a career out of it.<br /><br />In my early days in <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span>, I noticed a shortage of research labs in the game and decided to capitalise on it. I flew around the fringes of empire space renting all the available labs and then sold them on to players for a huge profit. Going from a run-of-the-mill miner to a self-made real estate agent made me realise that <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span> was something really special.<br /><br />Find out what innovative professions the players of <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE Online</span> have come up with over the years.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/14/eve-evolved-freeform-professions/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: Freeform professions</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/14/eve-evolved-freeform-professions/">EVE Evolved: Freeform professions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 14 Jul 2008 09:00:00 EST. In part one of <a href="http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/33680">a recent interview with Kevin O'Hara</a>, Senior World Designer for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-agency/">The Agency</a></em>, we learn even more about the environments, levels and combat mechanics of <a href="http://www.station.sony.com/en/index.vm">SOE</a>'s upcoming game.<br /><br />One point of this interview that stuck out in our minds the most is the mention of an open vs. linear environment. This seems to be a big draw for many MMOs these days, where players are requesting more and more vast areas to explore, trying to escape the funneled experiences we get with <a href="http://www.guildwars.com">more linear storylines</a>. Thankfully, <em>The Agency</em> seems to tackle this concern by allowing more options in your questing experience, while still allowing a "cool-down" area to prep for the next encounter. The overall faster-paced feel of the game promises to set it apart from the traditional MMOs we know today.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/21/interview-with-the-agencys-kevin-ohara/">Interview with The Agency's Kevin O'Hara</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 21 May 2008 17:30:00 EST. There's the code name -- are you more of a Falcon or a Wolf? Are those too urbane? Maybe DA FIXER is more your style? And then there's the outfit. Tuxedos -- rent or buy? Evening gowns -- daring or coy? Cars -- black sports cars or camo-painted APCs? You just can't walk into the business unprepared.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.station.sony.com/">SOE</a> is here to help. Their upcoming spy-themed MMO, <a href="http://theagency.station.sony.com/"><em>The Agency</em></a>, lets you indulge your inner cloak and dagger -- how much of cloak and how much of dagger, well, that's up to you. Urbane and sophisticated, making risky plays in Baccarat and seducing the young, rich and beautiful? If you like your ID numbers short with a few zeros in front, well, the United Nations Intelligence and Tactical Experts -- UNITE -- is likely your sort of organization. If the authorities can follow the line of half-destroyed buildings and flaming car wrecks straight to your slightly-dented tank, you should think about talking to the Paramilitary Global Operations Network -- ParaGON.<br /><br />To make your task a little easier, <a href="http://massively.com/tag/soe/">SOE</a> has tossed together a video that should make it easier for you to decide whether people should know you as "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055701/">The Saint</a>" or "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0001783/">BAMF</a>". On one side, you have all the guns, explosives, and "M"-ratings. On the other side, you have cartoon-inspired graphics, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/rmt">Real Money Trading</a>, and loads of fun from-7-to-70 minigames. And right in the middle of them both, there'd be John "Smed" Smedley keeping score. These are the kinds of things that come to mind while reading the latest interview with Smed. He talks, again, about the new MMOs and the innovations they bring to the genre, in a pleasantly relaxed tone. Absent are mad, loud proclamations to <a href="http://www.funcom.com/wsp/funcom/frontend.cgi?func=frontend.show&amp;template=home">Funcom</a>, <a href="http://www.mythicentertainment.com/">EA Mythic</a> and <a href="http://www.blizzard.com/">Blizzard</a> describing how, in great detail <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">SOE</a> MMOs will KICK THEIR MMO'S BUTT.<br /><br />He may not see his games in direct competition with the others, but players do. They want to know HOW the games will kick butt, WHERE they will do it, how PAINFUL it will be, and where they can get a front row seat. In <a href="http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/33637">this ION interview</a>, Smed talks about how children who play <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/free-realms/"><em>Free Realms</em></a> can be given an allowance in the game to limit the amount they spend on in-game goods. If you get your friends to try <em>Free Realms</em>, hey, you can find some shiny nickels in your account to perhaps buy that lovely outfit you've been eying. With <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-agency/"><em>The Agency</em></a>, on the other hand, you want boom? They will have boom. You want bleed? Bleed will happen. SOE is committed to getting an "M" rating for the game, even if they need to have an NPC cuss to do it. We want passion and we get bullet points. We want butt-kicking and get fireside chats. Smed, please tell us how <em>The Agency</em> is going to slam <a href="http://www.ageofconan.com/"><em>Age of Conan</em></a> to the ground. They went way beyond the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/01/april-fools-in-tabula-rasa-new-hybrid-class/">Skitterin hybrid class</a> Destination Games announced today, going all out with three additional hybrids, three new <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/personal-armor-units">PAUs</a> (check out the <a href="http://vnmedia.ign.com/tabularasavault.ign.com/fms/images/wallpapers/19/1206898645_fullres.jpg">Exobiologists' sweet ride</a>!), and a whole slew of weapon and class changes that should make any <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/tabula-rasa"><em>Tabula Rasa</em></a> die-hard chuckle.<br /><br />Among my favorites were changes to the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/spy">Spy's</a> blade that would increase both damage and range (!), the reduction in damage and increase in threat for the already woefully useless grenade launcher, and best of all, a new "poledance" emote for Exobiologists' clones to make them actually worth a darn in PvP combat, even just as a distraction. All we can say is poor, poor Exobiologists. Barbie cars and poledancing? April Fools' Day has not treated them kindly.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/01/april-fools-on-tabula-rasa-vault-wait-until-you-see-these-paus/">April Fools' on Tabula Rasa Vault: wait until you see these PAUs!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 01 Apr 2008 18:30:00 EST. Scanning the air-waves though, we've been hearing about a few wonky things from the patch. Nothing big, mind you, and nothing serious. Just a few things that have stuck out to players that any enterprising player would probably be keen on knowing.<br /><br />
<ul>
    <li><em>Blades now do physical damage with their alt attack.</em> - Players in general chat have been emphatic about this one, noting how the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/spy">Spy's</a> alt attack (hitting F while wielding a blade) still does type damage, and not physical damage as promised. Evidently, this is already <a href="http://www.planettr.com/forums/showpost.php?p=70753&amp;postcount=23">being looked at</a>.<br /></li>
    <li><em>Powerful Kael can now leap long distances in pursuit of their target. They do not utilize this at close range, but will do so to prevent their enemies from escaping. - </em>Be prepared to be a little frightened by this one. Kael have gotten a fairly substantial buff. Kael used to be big brutes who you could kite around and destroy with a pistol, but with this and the addition of a new stun attack, they will close distance in a blink and make quick work of you.</li>
    <li><em>The only circumstance where you cannot interrupt a reload is when you manually reload a weapon that still has some ammo left in it. </em>- With <a href="http://www.planettr.com/forums/showthread.php?p=70393#post70393">this thread</a> as our witness, this is not true. You can still interrupt a manual reload. For our money, this seems like a good bug to keep in - who wants to die while reloading?</li>
</ul>
All in all, a pretty good patch with some neat new tricks and no game breaking unfun.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/30/picking-apart-the-patch-for-tabula-rasa-1-6/">Picking apart the patch for Tabula Rasa 1.6</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 30 Mar 2008 09:00:00 EST. The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/tabula-rasa"><em>Tabula Rasa</em></a> crew has sent down another missive from the heavens today, instructing everybody to give themselves a big pat on the back for the rigorous testing that made <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/patch-1.6">patch 1.6</a> a success. Looking forward to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tr-patch-1.7">patch 1.7</a>, they've stressed that while <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/21/trs-ranger-classes-get-a-second-look/">the changes to the Ranger sub-classes</a> are their first and primary focus, they will be making an effort to look into every class to see what needs to be changed. Specifically, they mention making a global pass on all abilities for every class sometime between now and patch 1.8 and 1.9. <br /><br />In the immediate short term, they're looking to make changes to the minion system, which should give classes like the Exobiologist a little more utility than they have in the current build. Pets will also now receive a damage bonus from the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/12/14/tr-attribute-changes-unveiled-coming-in-1-4/">mind attribute</a>, giving them some added reason to spec something other than body for a change. In addition to some other, smaller UI changes, they also sought to make it apparent that the current costs for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/27/on-tabula-rasa-respecs-and-resolutions/">redeeming items with CP tokens</a> is not set in stone, and can and will be tweaked if they're not seeing the desired results server-side.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/28/all-tr-classes-getting-a-look-by-patch-1-9/">All TR classes getting a look by patch 1.9</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 28 Mar 2008 20:00:00 EST. If you're anything like most members of<em> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Tabula-Rasa/">Tabula Rasa</a></em>'s <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Spy/">Spy</a> class, you were first intrigued by 2 things: the chance to scare noobs in Alia Das disguised as a Thrax, and the immense power of the blade. Seriously, does it get any better than that? In a <a href="http://www.rgtr.com/community/community_news/feedback_friday_3212008.html">recent announcement for patch 1.7</a>, we're informed of a reduction in the blade's damage coming soon. It was inevitable that this would happen, as it is general knowledge that the blade is extremely overpowered. It is also inevitable that many <a href="http://www.planettr.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5221">people who play the spy</a> would get upset about this change.<br /><br />Fortunately, the good folks at <a href="http://www.plaync.com/us/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Destination Games</span></a> have offset the cons with some pros. For one, we have the wonderful new changes to most of the Spy's best abilities, as well as complete revamps of old, under-used abilities. Cloak Wave will now... well, it will now work. This includes the intriguing concept of the spy's entire squad actually being invisible to other players when in a PvP situation.<br /><br />So will a high percentage of spies completely ignore the ability buffs and concentrate on the blade's damage reduction on this upcoming patch? Yes, probably, but not this spy. I look forward to the class being more about real stealth and strategy, and much less about hack and slash.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/24/patch-1-7s-impact-on-the-spy/">Patch 1.7's impact on the Spy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 24 Mar 2008 19:00:00 EST.
