Ten years is an eternity in the game industry, and MMOs that manage to hang around for a decade or more are few and far between. One such title is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/vendetta-online"><em>Vendetta Online</em></a>, which originally released on April 20th, 2002 and is still going strong today.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/guild-software">Guild Software</a> is hosting a couple of celebration events this weekend. The company has also announced that its massive 1.9 patch is coming later this year, followed by an even more massive expansion in 2013.<br />
<br />
<em>Vendetta</em> is unique among MMOs for its twitch-based space combat and extensive trading, mining, and exploration gameplay. Large space battles, dynamic territory control, and player-generated content systems round out the feature set, all of which is coded and maintained by a four-man dev team. The single-universe game server is accessible from a number of different platforms that include Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems. In March 2011, <em>Vendetta</em> became the first PC MMO to jump to mobile platforms, and it spent several weeks as the number one paid app on Android devices.<br />
<br />
Check out the game's official website for more info, and don't forget to sign up for the trial while you're there. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/19/ex-mmo-devs-attempt-to-fund-space-combat-game-via-kickstarter/"><img alt="Squad Wars" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/squad.jpg" /></a></div>
They were part of the force behind many MMOs you've known and loved, including <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jumpgate/">Jumpgate</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/auto-assault/">Auto Assault</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/lego-universe/">LEGO Universe</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/rift">RIFT</a></em>, and<em> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/league-of-legends/">League of Legends</a></em>, and now they're banding together for a new cause funded by crowdsourcing. They're the developers at <a href="http://www.endgames.net/">END Games</a>, and they hope to raise <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1065318294/squad-wars">a quarter of a million dollars</a> to create a multiplayer space combat game.<br />
<br />
Despite the team's legacy, however, this new title will not be an MMO. Titled <em>Squad Wars</em>, the proposed project will blossom into a frantic starfighter game that will pit squads of players against each other in the deadly vacuum of space. Instead of focusing on a persistent world, <em>Squad Wars </em>will offer packaged scenarios that will "ensure the most fun every time you login."<br />
<br />
END Games is also notable in that two of its members were founders of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/netdevil/">NetDevil</a>: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/scott-brown">Scott Brown</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ryan-seabury/">Ryan Seabury</a>. As of the time of this writing, END Games has $1,430 toward its goal, which must be attained by May 19th for the project to proceed.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/19/ex-mmo-devs-attempt-to-fund-space-combat-game-via-kickstarter/">Ex-MMO devs aim to fund space combat game via Kickstarter</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 19 Apr 2012 16:00:00 EST. Whether you're a longtime <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> player or someone who's just recently tried the game and fallen in love with it, you're probably aware that there are other MMORPGs out there. Recently, the game that's been getting the most press is <a href="http://www.swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a>. And if you've sat down and tried it out as a veteran on <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a>, you probably had some idea of what was going on when you started playing, with the only initial speedbump being the lack of an auto-attack feature.<br />
<br />
But there's more to the game than combat and more things that might trip you up in the long run. So <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/eliot-lefebvre">Eliot Lefebvre</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/matt-daniel">Matt Daniel</a> are here to help you out with a massive guide to coming into <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Wars-The-Old-Republic/"><em>TOR</em></a> when you're accustomed to the environment of <em>WoW</em>. Take a skip past the break to find out almost everything you'll need to know when converting from the world of Azeroth to the galaxy of <em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/20/a-wow-players-guide-to-the-old-republic/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A WoW player's guide to The Old Republic</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/20/a-wow-players-guide-to-the-old-republic/">A WoW player's guide to The Old Republic</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 20 Jan 2012 10:30:00 EST. If mankind's exploration into outer space has taught us anything at this point, it's that sooner or later we're going to need to strap big guns on our bubbles of life support and blast each other out of the cosmos. It's already a prevailing theme among MMOs, with titles like <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/black-prophecy"><em>Black Prophecy,</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Battlestar-Galactica-Online/"><em>Battlestar Galactica Online</em></a> allowing us to jump forward a few hundred years of technological growth so we can have some space shootin' fun.<br />
<br />
As of late there seems to be two camps developing regarding MMO space shooters. With the advent of <em>SWTOR</em>, some are warming up to the cinematic on-the-rails style of its space combat game. Tunnel shooters allow for a more scripted -- and potentially more exciting -- experience, and this type of combat has a long history in single-player games dating back to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Fox_%28video_game%29"><em>Starfox</em></a> and before.<br />
<br />
Of course, the other camp just loathes rail shooters, much preferring the ability to fly anywhere one wants and engage in combat on one's own terms. The freedom of this style of space combat appeals to the inner individualist who doesn't want to conform to what everyone else is doing.<br />
<br />
In which camp have you struck your tent? Are you for free-form space combat or on-the-rails shooters? Let your vote be heard after the jump!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/09/leaderboard-free-form-space-combat-vs-on-the-rails-shooter/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Leaderboard: Free-form space combat vs. on-the-rails shooter</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/09/leaderboard-free-form-space-combat-vs-on-the-rails-shooter/">Leaderboard: Free-form space combat vs. on-the-rails shooter</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 09 Jan 2012 16:00:00 EST. <a href="http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com"><em>Star Wars Galaxies</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/16/final-swg-producers-letter-thanks-community/">may be no more</a>, but its legacy lives on in memories, discussion, and hindsight analysis. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">Sony Online Entertainment's</a> John Smedley had a frank talk with <a href="http://www.industrygamers.com/news/star-wars-galaxies-ndash-reflections-on-a-flawed-game/">Industry Gamers</a> in which he owns up to the mistakes of how the studio handled the title, particularly surrounding the much-maligned <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/combat-upgrade/">Combat Upgrade</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/NGE/">New Game Enhancements</a>.<br />
<br />
What would Smedley do if he could go back and give it another try? His first regret is launching the game before the space combat system was done, and his second is that SOE didn't talk and listen to its players more. "We would have encouraged more in-depth discussion with the community surrounding the idea of any game modifications," he said.<br />
<br />

Congratulations, you are now the proud owner of an actual, factual, interstellar starship! Or you soon will be, assuming that you're planning to play <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a>.<br />
<br />
Starships have captured the imaginations of Star Wars fans for over three decades now, as the Millennium Falcon, Luke's X-Wing, Boba Fett's Slave-1, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/knights-of-the-old-republic/"><em>Knights of the Old Republic's</em></a> Ebon Hawk have become geek cultural icons. It's not Star Wars without the stars, after all, which is why <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/BioWare/">BioWare</a> will be handing you the keys to your very own starship as part of your <em>SWTOR</em> journey.<br />
<br />
But what does that entail? There's a lot of confusion and misinformation swirling about starships, which is unfortunate. <em>SWTOR's</em> starships are part player housing, part combat vehicle, and part story platform, and that combination lacks an easy analogue in other MMOs. That's why you've got this handy holocron with all of the starship "must knows" to aid your initial voyage to the stars!<br />
<br />
Coordinates for the jump are plotted. Punch it, reader!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/12/swtor-starship-operators-guide/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>SWTOR: Starship operator's guide</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/12/swtor-starship-operators-guide/">SWTOR: Starship operator's guide</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 12 Dec 2011 12:00:00 EST. Fans were expecting a big showing out of <a href="http://swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> at this weekend's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pax-2011">PAX East</a>. <a href="http://bioware.com">BioWare</a> didn't disappoint, as the renowned RPG maker released the newest (<a href="http://www.swtor.com/media/trailers/fate-galaxy">and best</a>) trailer for its upcoming Star Wars MMORPG opus.<br />
<br />
The two-minute short consists entirely of in-game footage and is titled <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/fate-of-the-galaxy">Fate of the Galaxy</a>, an appropriate moniker given that the video is crammed full of epic Star Wars moments from start to finish. Whether you're into space combat, Jedi combat, or pleasingly retro sound effects from the Lucasfilm library (we dare you not to crack a smile at the signature sound of a <a href="http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Tauntaun">tauntaun</a> or the squeal of a Jawa as he's shown the business end of a Sith lightsaber), there's something here for just about every fan.<br />
<br />
Check out all the pyrotechnics after the cut and let us know what you think in the comments.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/11/bioware-reveals-new-old-republic-trailer-at-pax-east/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PAX East: BioWare reveals new Old Republic trailer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/11/bioware-reveals-new-old-republic-trailer-at-pax-east/">PAX East: BioWare reveals new Old Republic trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 11 Mar 2011 11:30:00 EST. In December of 2003, the <a href="http://www.syfy.com/">SciFi Network</a> (now Syfy) launched a hugely successful re-imagining of the '70s space-opera Battlestar Galactica. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/10/gdc10-an-in-depth-look-at-battlestar-galactica-online/">Early last year</a>, <a href="http://www.bigpoint.com/">Bigpoint</a> announced it had procured the license to make a browser-based MMOG set in the same re-imagined universe. Today, we have the first-ever in-game trailer for <a href="http://battlestar-galactica.bigpoint.com/"><em>Battlestar Galactica Online</em></a>. The press release states that this game is "<em>one of the most ambitious browser-games ever developed,</em>" and the trailer features the in-game footage of Cylon Raiders and Colonial Vipers facing off against the Galactica and Basestars. We also get a taste of what actual combat will feel like, with Bear McCreary's musical score as a emotional backdrop. Catch the full, exciting trailer after the break.<br />
<br />
Beta applications are being accepted on the game's website, open beta begins sometime soon in Q1, and launch will be shortly after that. When the game launches in the United States, it will be available only through Syfy.com. Stay tuned here for more information. So say we all!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/24/battlestar-galactica-fires-up-its-ftls-for-an-in-game-trailer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Battlestar Galactica fires up its FTLs for an in-game trailer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/24/battlestar-galactica-fires-up-its-ftls-for-an-in-game-trailer/">Battlestar Galactica fires up its FTLs for an in-game trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 24 Jan 2011 17:30:00 EST. You only have to go as far as the <a href="http://www.swtor.com/community/forumdisplay.php?f=8">official forums</a> to see the concern over what <a href="http://swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> is offering. I have a major question: Do the concerns have merit? I had an unofficial discussion with my editor, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/brianna-royce">Bree Royce</a>, about the whole idea of complaining to a large gaming company like <a href="http://bioware.com">BioWare</a>. Although I maintain that there is far too much complaining about features that the game will never have, Bree argued that the potential players of the game should continue to complain at every opportunity. What other way can they motivate a top-tier gaming company to deliver the game they want? After some thought, I agreed, but what happens to player desires that exceed the game's scope?<br />
<br />
I would like to think that developers would re-evaluate the scope of the project if enough people complained, but in truth, that level of reconstruction is expensive. For a game that is already as expensive as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>SWTOR</em></a>, I just don't see it happening. The few things that have been changed, like the size of the lightsaber hilts and the Wizard title, are really small things. However, things like taking space combat out of the tunnel are a bit more time-consuming, not to mention costly, and so they are less likely to be changed. But as Bree suggested to me, what other avenue do players have?<br />
<br />
What I'd like to talk about this week are a few of the top desires of the community, desires that push the scope of <em>SWTOR</em>. I will give the reasons I believe they are pushing the scope of the game, but I would really like to have your involvement. Why do you think these things were implemented the way they were, or why will they not be implemented? Step beyond the break to see my thoughts.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/09/hyperspace-beacon-beyond-the-scope/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hyperspace Beacon: Beyond the scope</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/09/hyperspace-beacon-beyond-the-scope/">Hyperspace Beacon: Beyond the scope</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 09 Nov 2010 12:00:00 EST. <a href="http://twitter.com/deb_shin">Deborah Shin</a>, the Marketing Manager for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> told <a href="http://www.torocast.com/index.php/news/item/253-torocast-exclusive-with-deborah-shin-and-rob-cowles">TOROcast at E3</a> that <a href="http://www.paxsite.com/paxprime/index.php">PAX</a> was going to be the game's biggest event of the year. When I heard that announcement about a month and a half ago, I decided that I would have to make it to this event. Prior to that I was willing to let others do the reporting while I snagged some stories at home. I want Massively to be your source of <em>SWTOR</em> news, so how could I not go to the biggest <em>SWTOR</em> bash of the year?<br />
<br />
This week's agenda is quite simple in scope, but a bit more complicated in execution. I hope to give you a very brief overview of what we know of our favorite game going into PAX, followed by a few directions I could go with information gathering. Ultimately, I want the fan's opinion. What information do you want to see come out of this <em>fan</em>-tastic exposition? Follow me after the jump, where I break down the possibilities.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/31/hyperspace-beacon-proper-pax-preparation-prevents-poor-pax-perf/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hyperspace Beacon: Proper PAX preparation prevents poor PAX performance</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/31/hyperspace-beacon-proper-pax-preparation-prevents-poor-pax-perf/">Hyperspace Beacon: Proper PAX preparation prevents poor PAX performance</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 31 Aug 2010 15:00:00 EST. Whether you're a groundpounder or a space jockey, <a href="http://www.swtor.com/"><em>The Old Republic</em></a> is gunning your way, big-time. Fans of either (or both!) aspects of the game have a little more to look forward to this week, as BioWare released additional information on the advanced classes and rolled out the first two starfighters for the public to see.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.swtor.com/news/news-article/20100820-0">In its recent Fan Friday</a>, BioWare clarified <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/18/gamescom-2010-bioware-reveals-10-new-advance-classes-for-tor/">the 16 class specializations</a> by listing each of their top three attributes. For example, bounty hunter players have the choice between powertech or mercenary paths. Powertechs will assume more of a tank role, with flamethrowers and defense shields at the ready. Mercenaries, on the other hand, are to be the ranged DPS version of the class, dealing out the pain with dual guns and missiles.<br />
<br />
If the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/17/bioware-teases-tor-space-combat-video/">recently revealed space combat</a> has you itching to jump into the cockpit, <a href="http://www.swtor.com/info/holonet/starships">you can check out the first two starships</a> (out of six) that will take pilots through the midst of adrenaline-pumping battles. The Fury is an Imperial interceptor (which looks like a predecessor of the <a href="http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/TIE/In_interceptor">TIE Interceptor</a>), designed with speed and firepower in mind. Its counterpart, the Defender, is a standard Republic corvette that's been upgraded with turbolasers and shields for quick combat missions. Hopefully, we'll find out the remaining four fighters before too long!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/22/the-old-republic-clarifies-advanced-classes-roles-unveils-firs/">The Old Republic clarifies advanced classes' roles, unveils first two combat ships</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 22 Aug 2010 16:00:00 EST. Not to be outdone by all the hemming and hawing over the perceived merits of its space combat implementation in <a href="http://www.swtor.com"><em>The Old Republic</em></a>, <a href="http://www.bioware.com">BioWare</a> has released a short video clip showing brief bits of the gameplay in action. Underscored by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_williams">John Williams</a>' seminal TIE Fighter Attack music track from <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars_Episode_IV:_A_New_Hope">A New Hope</a>, the video features some stunningly rendered spacecraft as they fly and fight their way through asteroid belts and in high planetary orbits.<br />
<br />
The trailer also features the high-quality voice acting that everyone has come to expect from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bioware">BioWare's</a> <a href="http://www.starwars.com">Star Wars</a> title, and you can check it out after the cut or at the <a href="http://www.swtor.com/media/trailers/space-combat">official website</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/17/bioware-teases-tor-space-combat-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>BioWare teases TOR space combat video</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/17/bioware-teases-tor-space-combat-video/">BioWare teases TOR space combat video</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 17 Aug 2010 13:00:00 EST. Ever since we heard that <a href="http://www.swtor.com/"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> was going to include <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/23/space-combat-has-been-comfirmed-for-swtor/">space combat</a> as one of its features, we've felt a bit like Red Squadron in A New Hope -- "standing by." It almost seemed too good to be true, especially since the rumor came out that the space portion of the game <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/08/rumor-the-old-republic-space-combat-on-rails/">would be an on-rails shooter</a>.<br />
<br />
It's with great glee, then, that we have received more news on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>TOR's</em></a> space combat in the upcoming October issue of <a href="http://www.pcgamer.com/">PC Gamer</a>. The seven-page spread confirms that the space combat won't be a free-form flight simulator like <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_X-Wing_vs._TIE_Fighter"><em>X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter</em></a>, but instead will be a "tunnel shooter" designed to create highly cinematic battle sequences for players to experience. Space combat hotspots will be unlocked as players progress through the game, and while they'll initially be solo instances only, eventually BioWare hopes to implement PvP and team combat in the future.<br />
<br />
In a tunnel shooter, players will be able to move ships up, down, left and right, although their overall course is locked in by the scenario in question. Ship collision, rotating quest objectives, customizable ship cosmetics, achievements, various difficulty levels and incentives to repeat missions also seem to be a go for this portion of the game. While a lot of the details are still hidden from our prying eyes, we're sure that BioWare will have a lot more to say on this in the near future.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/09/the-old-republics-space-combat-detailed-in-pc-gamer/">The Old Republic's space combat detailed in PC Gamer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 09 Aug 2010 12:00:00 EST. Those of you looking for levels of complexity and immersion comparable to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_X-Wing_vs._TIE_Fighter"><em>X-Wing Vs. TIE Fighter</em></a> or <a href="http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/players/index.vm"><em>Star Wars Galaxies</em></a>' <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jump_to_Lightspeed">Jump to Lightspeed</a> might want to hold your horses prior to pinning your hopes on <a href="http://www.bioware.com">BioWare's</a> <a href="http://www.swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a>. The forthcoming MMORPG is rumored to feature space combat "on rails," which basically means it could be nothing more than a mini-game or a "tunnel shooter" that severely restricts player movement in the form of pre-set paths and goals.<br />

While at <a href="http://www.comic-con.org/">Comic-Con</a>, the fan site <a href="http://moseisleyradio.com">Mos Eisley Radio</a> <a href="http://twitter.com/moseisleyradio/status/19365631503">tweeted a rumor</a> that there will be space combat in <a href="http://swtor.com"><em>SWTOR</em></a>. Space combat has been strongly suspected since the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/15/bioware-discuss-swtor-player-ships-group-gameplay-and-pvp-at-e3/">announcement of player ships at E3</a>, but there was nothing to confirm our suspicions. According to the folks at Mos Eisley Radio, James Ohlen said that each ship will be customizable, and, of course, that the player will be able to use this ship in space combat.<br />
<br />
Not moments later, this rumor was <a href="http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=173964">completely confirmed</a> by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>SWTOR</em></a>'s community manager, Sean Dahlberg, on the official forum. He confesses in his announcement, "<em>While we didn't quite make the numbers [of Facebook and Twitter followers], we definitely saw how excited the community is about this and how everyone came together. After all of that, there's no way we could hold back with our special reveal at Comic-Con!</em>" So it seems the devs did not <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/23/cats-invade-star-wars-the-old-republic-in-this-weeks-fan-frida/">punish the fans</a> for not reaching the social media goal after all. He reveals that further details will be available in the October edition of <a href="http://www.pcgamer.com/category/magazine/">PC Gamer</a>.<br />

<em>The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/hyperspace-beacon/">Hyperspace Beacon</a> is a weekly guide and discussion by Larry Everett about the yet-to-be-released game </em><a href="http://www.swtor.com/">Star Wars: The Old Republic</a>.<br />
<br />
No matter where you were this week, if you are a Star Wars fan, you saw the new <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>SWTOR</em></a> trailer: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/14/alderaan-stands-up-to-darth-malgus-in-new-e3-trailer-for-swtor/">Hope</a>. I'm sure you also read the Daily Grind asking, "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/19/the-daily-grind-do-cinematics-make-you-want-to-play/">Do cinematics make you want to play?</a>" It's an honest question. Lots of times these over-the-top trailers mask some of the things producers aren't telling you about the game you are interested in playing. In fact, it may give you greater expectations than the game has to offer. There have been quite a few comments about <a href="http://starwarsgalaxies.com"><em>Star Wars Galaxies</em></a>' trailers which have caused some players of the seven-year-old MMO to ask rhetorically, "I want to play <em>that</em> game. Where is that game?" So let me tell you up front, <em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em> does not look like either of the cinematic trailers, but that does not mean it is not a great game.<br />
<br />
I believe as a fan of this game and as a reporter for this website that I would be doing you, the reader, an injustice by totally giving into the (albeit mostly fan-created) hype that surrounds this game. So this week I want to take things back a notch and hopefully give you a realistic outlook on a couple of announced aspects of the game.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/21/hyperspace-beacon-fires-of-hope-from-e3-2010/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hyperspace Beacon: Fires of Hope from E3 2010</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/21/hyperspace-beacon-fires-of-hope-from-e3-2010/">Hyperspace Beacon: Fires of Hope from E3 2010</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 21 Jun 2010 16:00:00 EST. While <a href="http://blackprophecy.gamigo.com/"><em>Black Prophecy</em></a> has been flying under the radar, so to speak, it continues to pique our interest with slow burn reveals such as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/01/building-your-ship-in-black-prophecy/">custom ship building</a>. The space shooter MMO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/04/30/black-prophecy-enters-closed-beta/">has been in closed beta</a> for a month and a half, and fortunately for all of us awaiting this action-packed title, Reakktor Media is dropping out of stealth during E3 to give the public a better look.<br />
<br />
They've released a new two-and-a-half-minute trailer for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/black-prophecy/"><em>Black Prophecy</em></a> that features PvP and clan combat, as well as a glimpse of the missions fighter jockeys can accept. We'll be sitting down with the <em>Black Prophecy</em> crew for a chat at E3 later this week, but in the meanwhile, feast your eyes... upon THIS!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/15/black-prophecy-captures-a-battle-royale-in-new-e3-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Black Prophecy captures a battle royale in new E3 video</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/15/black-prophecy-captures-a-battle-royale-in-new-e3-video/">Black Prophecy captures a battle royale in new E3 video</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 15 Jun 2010 14:30:00 EST. First off, alliteration? Always fun. Moving on, we've got five new <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> screens for your viewing pleasure today. If you're wondering whether or not we're embellishing with our headline, well just take a look at the image above this post. That's a pretty good preview of what your eyes will be seeing in the rest of these images.<br />
<br />
If screens aren't enough to please you (and let's face it: they never are) then you should take a look at our several community Q&amp;A features <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/16/ships-star-trek-online-community-qanda-answers/">covering ships</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/25/space-combat-star-trek-online-community-qanda-answers/">space combat</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/09/ground-combat-star-trek-online-community-answers/">ground combat</a>. As usual, the five new screens can be found at the end of our gallery. Space battles in <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> are going to be a big selling point for many a <em>Trek</em> fan. I recently got some hands-on time with the closed beta and found several interesting talking points to deliver like hot fresh delicious phasered pizza. The subject of this week's <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> community Q&amp;A is probably one of the most popular considering its importance in the game. In fact, we're well aware that many questions <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/16/ships-star-trek-online-community-qanda-answers/">in last week's inaugural first post</a> were about space combat. So while we couldn't address those last week, we certainly can do so now!<br />
<br />
We'll give you until the end of Tuesday, November 17th to submit your questions in the comments section below. Following that, we'll round up a cross-section of the most popular and most poignant space combat questions and by next week your answers will be here, straight from the folks at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic/">Cryptic</a>. As before, we're open to suggestions on next week's Q&amp;A topic, so feel free to throw your hat into that ring while you're typing 'em up.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/16/massivelys-star-trek-online-community-qanda-space-combat/">Massively's Star Trek Online community Q&amp;A: Space combat!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 16 Nov 2009 16:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/22/star-trek-online-closed-beta-has-begun/">With beta now beginning</a>, we shot some relevant questions at Cryptic's Craig Zinkievich, executive producer on <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>. He gave us his insight on what the team's goals are during beta and what some of their toughest challenges were from their point of view. Plus, we even got him to spill the beans on when Klingons would be entering the fray for beta testers -- hopefully the rest of us get to see and hear more about the warrior race soon thereafter.<br />
<br />
It's a short interview, mostly because we kept our questions on topic and well, also because we didn't want to distract Craig from working on his game for very long. Someone's got to work on fulfilling our childhood fantasies!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/31/massivelys-star-trek-online-beta-interview/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively's Star Trek Online beta interview</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/31/massivelys-star-trek-online-beta-interview/">Massively's Star Trek Online beta interview</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 31 Oct 2009 11:00:00 EST. The <a href="http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=26979">latest <em>Star Trek Online</em> dev chat</a> was expectedly focused on the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/17/star-trek-online-to-feature-skill-based-leveling/">skill-based progression system</a> revealed in last week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Ask-Cryptic/">Ask Cryptic</a>. A particularly interesting answer revealed that although it's possible to eventually earn all the space skills in the game, your ship equipment and bridge officer selection will be a determining factor. Since ground combat is focused around your skill kit, which is based off your career choice, it's restricted by class.<br /><br />We also learned that advancing in rank earns players the right to newer, larger ships. When hitting a new rank, Starfleet will grant one free vessel, but the acquisition of other vessels within that new type will require merit. Knowing that puts us at ease, because we're sure that once Starfleet gets a load of our captaining abilities, they'll have no choice but to give us a trillion merit on the spot.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/23/skill-and-ship-progression-covered-in-new-sto-dev-chat/">Skill and ship progression covered in new STO dev chat</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 23 Sep 2009 16:00:00 EST. Gamespot got <a href="http://gamescom.gamespot.com/story/6216059/star-trek-online-updated-impressions?tag=top_stories;story;4">some hands-on time</a> with <em><a href="http://www.startrekonline.com">Star Trek Online</a></em> during <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Gamescom/">Gamescom</a> and came away from the experience thoroughly impressed by what Cryptic has been able to do with the license. We're glad to hear it, especially since <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/PAX/">PAX</a> is coming up soon and we're expecting to get a little face time with the game ourselves.<br /><br />Basically, it looks like <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Trek-Online">Star Trek Online's</a></em> space combat is exactly what you'd expect, in a good way. There's rerouting of power from one system to another and the ever-important maneuvering of your ship for optimal shield and weapons usage. Plus, they seemed to be quite impressed with the graphics. Oh, space vistas we cannot wait to see you through Star Trek goggles.<br /><br />Mission structure and ground combat were also touched upon. It seems like away teams will only be able to carry two weapon types into battle, although we're not sure if that scales with game progression or not. Interestingly, Cryptic mentioned that special weapons would eventually become available depending on your faction and "type of character" you play. We can't wait to find out more for ourselves in just a little over a week's time.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/26/sto-space-and-ground-combat-at-gamescom/">STO space and ground combat at Gamescom</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 26 Aug 2009 20:00:00 EST. It's safe to say that everyone here at Massively is excitedly awaiting Cryptic Studio's forthcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Trek-Online/" style="font-style: italic;">Star Trek Online</a>. So our very first interview with executive producer Craig Zinkievich was both a great opportunity and an enlightening experience. Beyond the cut, you'll find answers on player-made starships, holodecks, diplomatic encounters and much more.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/">Star Trek Online Gallery</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/#2451212"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/11/stobridge2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/#2451213"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/11/stobridge3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/#1480579"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/sto_screen_032709_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/#2451211"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/11/stobridge1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/#1480580"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/sto_screen_032709_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/27/massively-interviews-star-trek-online-executive-producer-craig-z/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively interviews Star Trek Online executive producer Craig Zinkievich</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/27/massively-interviews-star-trek-online-executive-producer-craig-z/">Massively interviews Star Trek Online executive producer Craig Zinkievich</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 27 Feb 2009 15:00:00 EST. The folks over at <a href="http://www.mmorpg.com">MMORPG.com</a> seem to have smuggled a few more screenshots out of <a href="http://www.jumpgateevolution.com"><em>Jumpgate Evolution</em></a> for everyone's perusal. Eleven new images of the game have been <a href="http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm?feature=2712&amp;page=1&amp;game=297&amp;bhcp=1">added to their online gallery</a>, each one quite gorgeous and jaw dropping. The screenshots themselves are centered around the various types of ships and starbases that can be encountered in the game, as well as some locales like jumpgates and asteroid fields.<br /><br />We have to keep reminding ourselves that this is a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17d0GB-FyTM">very fast paced space shooter</a> that requires both speed and precision, but how are we suppose to be precise when we're looking at how pretty everything in the game is? We just hope they make everything into a blur, otherwise it's going to be really hard for us to pull away from the scenery to shoot down some enemies.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/19/new-looks-into-jumpgate-evolution/">New looks into Jumpgate Evolution</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 19 Feb 2009 18:00:00 EST. We get a look at its current form in this two part developer with Associate Product Manager, Tim Hodges from E3-2008 courtesy of <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com">GameTrailers.com</a>. <br /><br />Unfortunately, what we loved about earlier builds that showed off the first action cockpit view is absent but not removed. Several landscapes and bases show a sense of scale and some combat aspects from the game. The videos don't reveal much detail, but for being in such an early state of development it looks okay. <em>Jumpgate Evolution</em> is due out sometime in spring 2009, and the alpha is underway and there's no official word on when the beta will start. However, <a href="http://www.jumpgateevolution.com/beta_signup.php">beta signups are live on the official website.</a> The second video is available for viewing after the cut.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/27/jumpgate-evolution-combat-maneuvers-shown-in-walkthrough-videos/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Jumpgate Evolution combat maneuvers shown in walkthrough videos [updated]</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/27/jumpgate-evolution-combat-maneuvers-shown-in-walkthrough-videos/">Jumpgate Evolution combat maneuvers shown in walkthrough videos [updated]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 27 Jul 2008 20:00:00 EST. But even better than a full episode devoted to space combat would be an MMO based in that world. How would that work, you ask? We're glad you did! Keep in mind that this article assumes basic knowledge of the show universe and its characters. If you haven't seen it, get thee to a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.torrent">torrent</a>, or a rental store immediately!<br /><br />First, consider some of the great two-sided rivalries in MMOs: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft">Horde vs. Alliance</a>; <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/tabula-rasa">AFS vs. the Bane</a>; <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/hellgate-london">Humanity vs. Hell</a> -- Mankind vs. the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cylon_%28re-imagining%29">Cylons</a> fits right in. In fact, since the show itself manages to portray both sides as sympathetic, there isn't too much storyline massaging to be done; the universe of <span style="font-style: italic;">Galactica</span> is nicely morally ambiguous. All that really matters is survival.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/16/tv-shows-that-could-be-mmos-battlestar-galactica/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>TV shows that could be MMOs: Battlestar Galactica</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/16/tv-shows-that-could-be-mmos-battlestar-galactica/">TV shows that could be MMOs: Battlestar Galactica</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 16 Apr 2008 09:00:00 EST.
