This was mentioned in a recent <a href="http://virginworlds.com/podcast.php?show=5&amp;ep=37"><em>Shut Up. We're Talking.</em></a> podcast and provided some fuel for further discussion by Syncaine, from the <a href="http://syncaine.wordpress.com">Hardcore Casual</a> blog.<br /><br />He observes that <em>"EVE players embrace scams, trickery, underhandedness, and generally resent any changes that would 'dumb down' EVE. In WoW that gets you quickly banned, and before that rivers swell from all the tears shed while players scream mommy." </em>There's also a huge divide between the titles in terms of how 'hardcore' or PvP-centric the games are. <em>"EVE is harsh on day one, and stays that way,"</em> Syncaine writes. <em>"WoW holds your hand from 1-80, and makes sure you get a cookie regardless if you win or lose. EVE not only takes your cookie, but laughs at you for bringing one in the first place."</em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/22/natural-selection-applied-to-mmos/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Natural selection applied to MMOs</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/22/natural-selection-applied-to-mmos/">Natural selection applied to MMOs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 22 Nov 2008 16:00:00 EST. The distinction here though, is that the members of this roundtable podcast are discussing their impressions of the game so far from the perspectives of open beta users vs. closed beta users. This is something that is very important to those players who may have had a bad experience with either of the betas, or the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/15/funcoms-official-response-to-the-age-of-conan-early-access-sell/">pre-order early access fiasco</a>.<br /><br />John, from <a href="http://tagn.wordpress.com/">The Ancient Gaming Noob</a>, also brings up some great points from the perspective of someone who has worked in a related field, regarding the fact that <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/aoc">AoC</a></em>'s beta seemed like one big marketing tool. He cites the example of this being done in <a href="http://www.rgtr.com"><em>Tabula Rasa</em></a>'s beta as well, where the information collected from the beta was seemingly ignored for the official launch of the game.<br /><br />The <em>AoC</em> discussion is in the first half of episode 26, and is certainly worth a listen, especially if you're someone who was completely turned off to the game after your experiences with the beta.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/19/shut-up-were-beta-testing/">Shut up.
