	Another round of server merges are coming to <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/category/warhammer-online">Warhammer Online</a></em>, and this time it's Drakenwald's metaphorical head on the proverbial chopping block. As of tomorrow, March 20th, Drakenwald will be marked as a Legacy server, which will prevent players from creating new characters there. In the meantime, the players who currently populate the server will be able to move to either Karak Norn or Badlands. After three weeks in Legacy status, Drakenwald will be officially retired and any characters remaining on the server will have to be transferred before they can be played. <em>WAR</em> players should know the routine by now, but if you need a refresher, the details can be found on the game's official site.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/19/another-one-bites-the-dust-warhammer-online-shuts-down-another/">Another one bites the dust: Warhammer Online shuts down another server</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 19 Mar 2012 18:00:00 EST. Eulogizing <a href="http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/index.vm"><em>Star Wars Galaxies</em></a> is difficult. In fact, I've written some 2,200 articles since signing on with Massively a couple of years ago, and none of them has come close to being as painful as this particular wall o' text.<br />
<br />
The fact that I even used the word eulogy in reference to a video game says it all, really. Join me after the cut for as brief a remembrance as I can manage.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/16/some-assembly-required-one-last-jump-to-lightspeed/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Some Assembly Required: One last jump to lightspeed</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/16/some-assembly-required-one-last-jump-to-lightspeed/">Some Assembly Required: One last jump to lightspeed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 16 Dec 2011 15:00:00 EST. After only three months of commercial operation, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Troy-Online/">Troy Online</a></em> is going to be <a href="http://troy.alt1games.com/forums/viewTopic.htm?f=9&amp;t=12653&amp;currentForumId=9">discontinuing operations as of November 30th</a>. According to the official notice, within the short span of time that the game has been available, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Alt1-Games/">Alt1 Games</a> has noticed a level of bugs and errors that the developers considered unacceptable, leading to the decision to shut down service at the end of the month and re-launch the game at a later date.<br />
<br />
The obvious question for players, of course, becomes "what about the stuff that I bought out of the cash shop?" If you still have remaining coins for the in-game store or unused cash shop items in your character's inventory, you are eligible for a refund by contacting the customer support center by November 22nd, with refunds being credited between the 23rd and the 24th. It's a sad whimper for the game's operation to end on, but at least players won't be <a href="http://troy.alt1games.com/forums/viewTopic.htm?f=9&amp;t=12653&amp;currentForumId=9">left out in the cold with any unused money</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/03/alt1-games-shutting-down-troy-online/">Alt1 Games shutting down Troy Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 03 Nov 2011 19:30:00 EST. Sometimes, games go down for maintenance, or your power goes out, or there's an internet hiccup. You have to deal with a bit of time out of the game, and it's no big deal. But other times, you have to deal with an extended hiatus from your game of choice due to massive natural disasters or other catastrophic circumstances. You might have bigger problems than just not logging in to <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Trek-Online/">Star Trek Online</a></em>, but it doesn't change the fact that you're going to be out of circulation for a bit.<br />
<br />
If you've been messing around exclusively with low-level characters that have nothing time-related on their plates, naturally, you won't be affected. But if you're in the midst of endgame work in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/RIFT/">RIFT</a></em> or long-term roleplaying in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Lord-of-the-Rings-Online/">Lord of the Rings Online</a></em>, being out for a long stretch of time can cause some issues. So how do you work around it? And equally importantly, how do you manage your time when you're taking an unwanted hiatus from one of your hobbies for a while?<br />

<br />
Games die. It's an unpleasant reality but a reality just the same, with the highest-profile death on the horizon being <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Wars-Galaxies/">Star Wars Galaxies</a></em>. Business decisions get made, and unfortunately, sometimes those decisions boil down to "this game is no longer worth the money to keep it running." If you're lucky, the announcement comes with a great deal of time for you to wrap up what you've always wanted to do in the game; if you're unlucky, you might have a couple of weeks before the servers go dark.<br />
<br />
So what do you do as a player? How do you cope with the fact that the game is shutting down? There are a lot of approaches, but I think it's unfortunate that most of the reactions seem to center around some last-ditch effort to save the game from oblivion. It's entirely missing the point to try and pull the game back from the brink of death, and it does a disservice to both the game and the players when you spend your last days desperately fighting a foregone conclusion.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/09/the-soapbox-be-here-now/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Soapbox: Be here now</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/09/the-soapbox-be-here-now/">The Soapbox: Be here now</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 09 Aug 2011 13:00:00 EST. <div>
	Today's <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/category/the-mmo-report">MMO Report</a>, sadly, suffers from a distinct lack of <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/casey-schreiner">Casey Schreiner</a>. But all is well, as G4's <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/morgan-webb">Morgan Webb</a> has stepped up to the plate to cover for Casey as he celebrates his 30th birthday.<br />
	<br />
	The first order of business is the announcement that <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft">NCSoft</a> will be <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/11/ncsoft-shutting-down-lineage-in-north-america/">shutting down</a> the North American <em><a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/category/lineage">Lineage</a></em> servers on June 29th. All inactive accounts for the 13-year-old game have been reactivated, and the game will be free-to-play until the servers go dark.<br />

	Secondly, we move on to the much-anticipated <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> and the confirmation that Lion's Arch, a social hub featured in the first game, would be making its return in <em>Guild Wars 2</em>. Be sure to check out <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/16/flameseeker-chronicles-lions-arch-unveiled/">our coverage</a> of the unveiling of the fly-through video and some analytical commentary from our own Rubi Bayer.<br />
	<br />
	Next up is some screen-time for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/minecraft">Minecraft</a></em>. While the game is not strictly an MMO, there's no doubt that the indie title has gained immense popularity in the gaming community. Morgan reports that <em>Minecraft </em>creator Notch is contemplating holding a Las Vegas launch party... err, convention tentatively dated for November 11th.<br />
	<br />
	<a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a>'s Sith Inquisitor made its <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/12/swtors-sith-inquisitor-shows-unlimited-power/">trailer debut</a> earlier this week. Being described by Morgan as "<em>the one player character you really don't want to meet in a dark alley,</em>" the class incorporates elements of both spellcasters and stealth classes into one mean, Force-fueled combination.<br />
	<br />
	Lastly, we have a fly-through video of the starting zones of <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/perfect-world-entertainment">Perfect World Entertainment</a>'s <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ether-saga-odyssey">Ether Saga Odyssey</a></em>. The free-to-play MMO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/28/ether-saga-odyssey-officially-launches/">launched late last month</a>.<br />

If you're playing on the Iron Rock or Volkmar servers for <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a>, it's time to get ready to say goodbye. The development team for the game has just announced that <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=1490">free server transfers are being unlocked for both servers</a>, allowing players to transfer to Gorfang to help bolster the population. That in and of itself wouldn't be all that unusual, except that when the transfer starts, both Iron Rock and Volkmar are being flagged as Legacy servers to prevent any new characters from being created.<br />
<br />
Starting on February 9th, transfers will be enabled and the Legacy flag will go into place. After three weeks of open transfers, both Iron Rock and Volkmar will be flagged as "Retired," meaning that any characters not transferred off the server will have to be transferred to Gorfang (or Badlands via a paid transfer). That means that two of the game's remaining four American servers will be removed in the near future, and while the population boost will no doubt help <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Warhammer-Online/">Warhammer Online</a></em>'s RvR battles, it's still <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=1490">a shutdown for two servers</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/07/warhammer-online-offering-free-server-transfers-as-prelude-to-tw/">Warhammer Online offering free server transfers as prelude to two server shutdowns</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 07 Feb 2011 22:00:00 EST. Sad news today for fans of <a href="http://fez.gamepotusa.com"><em>Fantasy Earth Zero</em></a> -- after officially launching <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/18/fantasy-earth-zero-celebrates-launch-with-special-events/">less than a year ago</a>, the game <a href="http://fez.gamepotusa.com/announcements/index.aspx?id=224">will be shutting down in North America</a> in just under two months. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Gamepot-USA/">Gamepot USA</a> has posted a full statement explaining the game's shutdown schedule as well as the policies on refunds for any game currency purchased within the last month. The game's cash shop has been closed, with all servers set to quadruple experience and money so that players can enjoy the time that's left.<br />
<br />
<em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Fantasy-Earth-Zero/">Fantasy Earth Zero</a></em> took the long way around to get released stateside in the first place, after being developed by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Square-Enix/">Square-Enix</a> and then nearly shut down in Japan due to poor sales. An <a href="http://fez.gamepotusa.com/announcements/index.aspx?id=225">emotional farewell letter</a> has also been posted, something fans of the game will no doubt wish to read. There's still time left to enjoy the accelerated servers before the shutdown, but when the lights go out on March 24th, <a href="http://fez.gamepotusa.com/announcements/index.aspx?id=224">they won't be coming back on</a>.<br />

It wasn't entirely unexpected -- after all, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Jeff-Skalski/">Jeff Skalski</a> gave some indications this might be coming in our <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/11/massively-interview-mythic-producer-on-future-of-warhammer-online/">recent interview with him</a> -- but it's still unbalancing. <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a> community manager <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Andy-Belford/">Andy Belford</a> confirmed today that <a href="http://forums.warhammeronline.com/warhammer/board/message?board.id=heraldnews&amp;message.id=2825#M2825">two of the game's servers, Dark Crag and Phoenix Throne, will be shutting down</a>. The population of these servers will be allowed a free transfer to two other servers each -- Iron Rock or Badlands for Dark Crag, Gorfang or Volkmar for Phoenix Throne. He also mentions that there will be a 20% bonus to experience and renown in the weeks following the transfer, to at least slightly take the sting off the event.<br />
<br />
It looks as if there will be <a href="http://bootaesbloodyblog.blogspot.com/2009/11/open-rvr-closed.html#comments">slightly more servers in the European region</a>, as they have a total of 13 still open... but several of those are due to the different languages, and at least one of the realms is scheduled for shutdown. As for what this means for the game itself... it's hard to call it anything but bad news, even with the promises of a boost incoming to ease the impact. We know that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online/"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a>'s future looks a bit shaky after <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/09/rumor-80-more-layoffs-hit-mythic/">recent</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/11/producer-letter-addresses-the-future-of-warhammer-online/">events</a>, but this is more dire than any of us had expected or hoped. We'll keep up on any news as it becomes available.<br />

In a letter to all <a href="http://www.starwarsgalaxies.com"><em>Star Wars Galaxies</em></a> account holders today, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">Sony Online Entertainment</a> has announced that they will be <a href="http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/players/news_archive.vm?id=68443&amp;month=current">shutting down 12 servers</a> on October 15th. This brings their number of active servers to 13 -- a pretty respectable number for any game to still host.<br /><br />This shutdown has come as a response to the free character transfer service that SOE has offered <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-galaxies"><em>Star Wars Galaxies</em></a> players, leaving certain servers with drastically low populations while other servers have become the new homes of the community. Many members of the SWG community only <a href="http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/posts/list.m?topic_id=995148">look upon this move with happiness</a>, as now it means having worlds teeming with players rather than wasteland planets.<br /><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/15/star-wars-galaxies-to-shut-down-12-servers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Star Wars Galaxies to shut down 12 servers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/15/star-wars-galaxies-to-shut-down-12-servers/">Star Wars Galaxies to shut down 12 servers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 15 Sep 2009 17:00:00 EST. We hope you knew what <em><a href="http://www.mythos.com/">Mythos</a></em> was -- <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/18/mythos-beta-is-shutting-down-tonight/">or is, depending on how things play out</a> -- because <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/25/mythos-wins-over-another-fan-in-new-hands-on/">the game was a whole lot of fun</a> even in beta. In fact it really seemed ready for prime time and that was several months ago. We really don't know what the future holds for the game, but right now it's on indefinite hiatus and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/21/mythos-is-dead-but-its-memory-lives-on/">that makes us wear our sad faces</a>. So for today's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-daily-grind/">The Daily Grind</a> we're asking you: Did you plan on playing the game once it came out of beta?<br /><br />As a free-to-play game, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/mythos/">Mythos</a></em> stood a chance to become a wonderful "instead" game. What we mean is that it was the perfect game to play instead of your regular evening or weekend getaway game. Don't feel like grinding through more dungeons in <em><a href="http://www.lotro.com">Lord of the Rings Online</a></em> or <em><a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com">World of Warcraft</a></em> today? Play <em>Mythos</em> instead, it's easy-going hack n' slash fun! The examples are beyond several. Well, they <em>were</em> beyond several. We truly hope to see a rushed revival for those of you (us included) that were planning on playing the game once it launched.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/23/the-daily-grind-were-you-going-to-play-mythos/">The Daily Grind: Were you going to play Mythos?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 23 Jul 2008 08:00:00 EST. According to Scott over at <a href="http://pumpingirony.net/">Pumping Irony</a>, upon firing-up the old test launcher <a href="http://pumpingirony.net/2008/06/27/the-free-ride-is-over/">players were met with the somber news and much kudos</a> for their hard diligent bug reporting and feedback during the whole testing operation. Funcom kept their old beta servers online for a month after <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/20/age-of-conan-opens-its-doors-to-the-bloodthirsty-hordes/"><em>Age of Conan</em> launched</a> before pulling them offline yesterday and the plan is to convert them over into a "Testlive" server. A common practice after an MMOG launches. <br /></div>
<br />To keep a healthy test playerbase busy swatting bugs and pillaging bleeding-edge content the following standard measure is planned: <br /><em><br />"We will be doing several things to encourage people to play on Testlive. We are looking at being able to copy characters from Live, having "buffing" NPCs that will level and gear your character up."</em><br /><br />Doesn't seem like much incentive to play on the official test live server, but what else can they do aside from handing out bags of money to all your non-test characters? You tell us.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/28/age-of-conan-s-old-beta-test-servers-shut-down/">Age of Conan's old beta test servers shut down</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 28 Jun 2008 18:00:00 EST.
