Do you have questions about the Illuminati? Of course you do -- that's sort of their whole method of operation. But when it comes to <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/The-Secret-World/">The Secret World</a></em>, some of those questions got answered via <a href="http://t.co/EGXy76Qq">yesterday's community question-and-answer session on Facebook</a>. While you'll have to Like the page in order to view all of the answers, you're rewarded for doing so with a breadth of facts about the secretive power-mongers and hoarders of secrets.<br />
<br />
Among the first questions was the simple one of how the Illuminati aren't in control of everything in the game world if their operatives have infiltrated the highest level of government; as it happens, with the world exploding and lighting up with the supernatural, the Illuminati are too concerned with working overtime to keep things under wraps to try to take total control. The answers also reinforce the idea that the Illuminati crave power and competence above all, up to the organization's willingness to discard lesser members for valuable information. You can take a peek at <a href="http://t.co/EGXy76Qq">the full set of answer on Facebook</a>, but keep in mind that you're going to need to Like the page first.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/16/the-secret-world-answers-community-questions-about-the-illuminat/">The Secret World answers community questions about the Illuminati</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 16 Jan 2012 10:00:00 EST. <div>
	Take a seat, Templars and Illuminati -- it's the Dragons' time to shine. Over at <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/the-secret-world"><em>The Secret World</em></a>'s official site, <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/funcom">Funcom</a> has announced this week as Dragon week, meaning that as the week goes by, we'll be granted new information and assets focused on the Seoul-based secret society. The game's director, <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/ragnar-tornquist">Ragnar T<span>&oslash;</span>rnquist</a>, says, "Revealing new things about the Dragon is exciting for us, as the very nature of the Dragon is to stay hidden and create chaos behind the scenes to reach their ultimate goal." So it should be interesting to see what kind of tricks the organization has up its sleeves.<br />
	<br />
	Whether you're a Dragon initiate looking to find out more about your chosen secret society or you're a member of the Templars or Illuminati ready to build a dossier on your opposition, keep your eyes open in the coming week as the shady secrets of the Dragon are brought to light. In the meantime, though, check out the gallery below for six new Dragon-centric screenshots.<br />

If you were given the chance to build your very own world from scratch, how would you do it? What would you include? Would it be a world of beauty or dark dreamscapes? And would the inhabitants enjoy their stay or flee in terror?<br />
<br />
To the team at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom/">Funcom</a> tasked with fashioning <a href="http://www.thesecretworld.com/"><em>The Secret World's</em></a>... world, this isn't a hypothetical question, but a practical one. <a href="http://www.thesecretworld.com/news/blog_creating_the_world_part_one">In a new developer blog post</a>, Lead Content Designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/joel-bylos/">Joel Bylos</a> returns to share a behind-the-scenes view of how a game world is made.<br />
<br />
Bylos says that there are four aspects to world-building: identifying purpose, research, building flow, and prototyping and production. Because <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-secret-world"><em>The Secret World </em></a>takes place on our planet in the here-and-now, the team has a reference point to begin, but layers a "secret history" on top of it. Bylos explains by saying, <em>"This is the history of an area as only a member of </em>The Secret World<em> can experience it; the footprints of the secret societies and their past conflicts; the truth behind the local myths and legends; the echoes of ancient magic and forgotten rituals."</em><br />
<br />
Of course, it's one thing to design something what you think is interesting and fun -- it's another to see if it works out in practice. All of this planning on paper is just the first stage of getting it in the game, which Bylos promises will come in an upcoming post.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/23/joel-bylos-on-building-a-better-secret-world/">Joel Bylos on building a better Secret World</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 23 Jun 2011 11:00:00 EST. Looking for further information on <a href="http://www.darkdaysarecoming.com/"><em>The Secret World's</em></a> equally secret Illuminati and Templar societies? We're going to go ahead and assume that you are, as they're quite interesting aspects of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Funcom">Funcom's</a> upcoming third MMO. Actually, considering much of the game's story and conflict revolves around the three warring secret societies, we'd say these two <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/thesecretworld/news.html?sid=6243832&amp;om_act=convert&amp;om_clk=newsfeatures&amp;tag=newsfeatures;title;2&amp;mode=previews">Illuminati</a> and <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/thesecretworld/news.html?sid=6244165&amp;om_act=convert&amp;om_clk=newsfeatures&amp;tag=newsfeatures;title;1&amp;mode=previews">Templar</a> interviews are required reading for anyone who considers themselves interested in the game.<br />
<br />
We're all about picking sides in MMOs here at Massively. When it comes to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/The-Secret-World/"><em>The Secret World</em></a>, there's a lot to consider, although something about the Illuminati is quite alluring. We're of the opinion that their high tech nature combined with their fashion sensibilities is going to be quite attractive to many a person. Oh, plus it doesn't hurt that they're the "bad boys" of the game.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-secret-world-art/">The Secret World Art</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-secret-world-art/#2822391"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/03/cdc-gdc2010-1269295574_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-secret-world-art/#2822392"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/03/che-gdc2010-1269295574_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-secret-world-art/#2822393"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/03/corporation-uniform-gdc2010-1269295575_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-secret-world-art/#2822394"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/03/cowgirl-outfit-gdc2010-1269295575_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-secret-world-art/#2822395"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/03/draugboss-gdc2010-1269295575_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/21/more-on-the-secret-worlds-templar-and-illuminati/">More on The Secret World's Templar and Illuminati</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 21 Dec 2009 10:00:00 EST. There's definitely a certain type of player the enigmatic Dragon secret society will appeal to in <a href="http://www.darkdaysarecoming.com/"><em>The Secret World</em></a>. We can say that with even greater confidence after reading <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/thesecretworld/news.html?sid=6243637&amp;tag=topslot;thumb;2&amp;mode=previews">Gamespot's Dragon-focused interview</a> with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Funcom">Funcom's</a> Ragnar Tornquist. They're masters of the subtle and maestros of manipulation -- also, they carry katanas and guns.<br />
<br />
The interview runs the gamut topic-wise, but many of the answers coming from Ragnar are still incredibly careful to avoid any and all spoilers. Nevertheless, there's still much to be gleaned from regarding what these guys are about and how playing them is going to be different from the other two factions within <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/The-Secret-World/"><em>The Secret World</em></a>. Our favorite nugget of new information? Lighting your katana on fire being confirmed as an in-game feature. One of the key people behind the upcoming horror MMO is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ragnar-tornquist">Ragnar T&oslash;rnquist</a>, Producer and Director of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-secret-world"><em>The Secret World</em></a>. T&oslash;rnquist recently sat down for an interview with Vladimir "<a href="http://ugdb.com/user/evoker/">Evoker</a>" Georgiev from <a href="http://ugdb.com">UGDB.com</a> to discuss what will set <em>The Secret World</em> apart from other MMOs we've played. <br /><br />One of the refreshing aspects of the game is there are no levels or classes in <em>TSW</em>. T&oslash;rnquist tells UGDB, <em>"Our goal is to make sure that players can sit down and play this game and enjoy themselves from the very beginning. You don't start out fighting rats with a rusty sword. You get cool firearms, black magic, occult weapons from the outset -- and you're fighting demons and the undead, not wild boar or petty criminals."</em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/23/ragnar-tornquist-on-what-sets-the-secret-world-apart/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Ragnar Tørnquist on what sets The Secret World apart</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/23/ragnar-tornquist-on-what-sets-the-secret-world-apart/">Ragnar Tørnquist on what sets The Secret World apart</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 23 Oct 2009 11:00:00 EST. In spite of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/29/funcom-layoffs-slow-the-secret-world-development/">recent layoffs</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom/">Funcom</a> seems to be moving forward steadily with <a href="http://www.darkdaysarecoming.com/"><em>The Secret World</em></a>, offering a peek into the secret societies and a chance at the beta. The official site invites you to take the test to win beta access, and offers up a quiz asking "<em>Which secret society do you belong to?</em>"<br /><br />The quiz is brief, a fun diversion that serves to give an overview of the three secret societies in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom/"><em>The Secret World</em></a>: the Illuminati (described as the notorious bad boys and girls of <em>The Secret World</em>), Templars (Crusaders, judges, the holy terror), and Dragon (manipulators and conspirators). Taking the quiz and giving your email address nets you an initiate kit, an invitation to join the forums, and a shot at a beta key. <br /><br />So if you are looking forward to this upcoming game, rest assured that it seems to be delayed, but not dead.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/17/funcom-unveils-the-secret-world-beta/">Funcom unveils The Secret World beta</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 17 Oct 2009 20:00:00 EST. It's quite a departure from the fantasy genre in MMOs, with elements of horror, mysteries and conspiracies, hidden knowledge sought by secret societies... ok, we can say no more. But it's killing us that we can't talk about it quite yet. We've seen the gameplay but <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom">Funcom</a> will unleash unspeakable occult forces upon us, like lawyers, if we spill what we know. Of course we'll have a feature story on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-secret-world"><em>The Secret World</em></a> up on Massively soon -- but in the meantime, we want to ask what you think about the impending arrival of horror to the MMO scene. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.funcom.com">Funcom</a> is clearly trying to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/03/the-secret-world-reveals-new-game-trailer-factions/ ">set the tone for the game with their latest trailer</a>, which might have given us clues about the kinds of things we'll see in <em>TSW</em>. But as we all know, a cinematic isn't always the best representation of a game title. So do you think <em>The Secret World</em> will be a dark, mature title? Or will it be <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cthulu">Cthulhu</a>-lite? Sound off and let us know about your expectations of <em>The Secret World</em>!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/07/the-daily-grind-what-are-your-expectations-of-the-secret-world/">The Daily Grind: What are your expectations of The Secret World?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 07 Sep 2009 08:00:00 EST. Despite all the secrecy, we know it's a modern day setting with heavy overtones of the occult and mysticism. Past images released for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-secret-world">The Secret World</a></em> have shown shambling, twisted <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/17/the-secret-world-screenshots-leaked-in-funcom-quarterly-report/">corpses walking through a town</a>. There was also a Cthulu-esque scene of a thing-that-cannot-be-named obliterating city streets, a lone woman wielding a katana facing off against it. They've told us that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/07/gdc09-interview-with-the-secret-worlds-creator-ragnar-tornqui/">players will form cabals</a> to uncover mysteries and deal with supernatural threats. Still, there hasn't been much to go on. <br /><br />What <a href="http://www.funcom.com">Funcom</a> reveals about <em>The Secret World</em> at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pax-2009">PAX</a> in the coming days will be "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/24/new-the-secret-world-info-at-pax-to-be-biggest-thing-yet/"><em>the biggest thing on TSW yet</em></a>", but apparently secrets just want to be set free. We came across a YouTube video of <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utW53uzpjUA"><em>The Secret World</em>'s second trailer</a> (embedded below), with a shotgun toting girl tracking some monstrosity that can scatter its form into a murder of crows. You can also see the trailer in high res that's part of an exclusive on the Norwegian site <a href="http://www.dagbladet.no/2009/09/03/kultur/spill/the_secret_world/funcom/onlinespill/7939385/">Dagbladet.no</a>. Plus, they've got eleven new screenshots and bits of concept art up on their site as well.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/03/the-secret-world-reveals-new-game-trailer-factions/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Secret World reveals new game trailer, factions</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/03/the-secret-world-reveals-new-game-trailer-factions/">The Secret World reveals new game trailer, factions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 03 Sep 2009 13:45:00 EST. Fantasy reigns supreme, but fans of sci-fi are going to see more MMO titles geared towards their interests in the coming years. One genre that's still underrepresented, though, is horror. <a href="http://www.darkdaysarecoming.com/"><em>The Secret World</em></a> is a horror MMO in development at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom">Funcom</a> that we've heard precious little of. That is, until now. <br /><br />Reporting for <a href="http://www.shacknews.com">ShackNews</a>, Chris Faylor writes that Funcom's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ragnar-tornquist">Ragnar T&oslash;rnquist</a>, game director for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-secret-world"><em>The Secret World</em></a>, will present at the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc">Game Developers Conference</a> later this month. We're hoping his presentation will explain more of the game's premise. Presently, it's <a href="http://www.darkdemonscrygaia.com/">rumored to have secret society and Cthulu-esque elements to it</a>, but we're excited that we'll finally be able to hear more about <em>The Secret World</em> when we cover GDC later this month.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/10/funcom-to-reveal-the-secret-world-at-gdc-09/">Funcom to reveal The Secret World at GDC '09</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 10 Mar 2009 13:00:00 EST.
