It is not every day that a U.S. governor is the one to announce the launch window for an MMO, so savor the weirdness while you can: Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/18/rhode-island-governor-gives-38-studios-copernicus-mmo-a-june-20/">announced at a press conference</a> that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios/">38 Studios</a> will be releasing code-name <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/project-copernicus/">Project Copernicus</a> next summer. "What I understand is Copernicus is June of '13," Chafee said. He also stated that he thought the financial deal was a "risky enterprise" from the start.<br />
<br />
38 Studios Founder and Chairman Curt Schilling <a href="http://bostonglobe.com/business/2012/05/18/facebook-curt-schilling-denies-paid-himself-back-with-money-thanks-supporters-ailing-studios-video-game-company/EnqdY2flmq0Bf55m4YvdRM/story.html">said on Facebook</a> that rumors of his using the state funds to repay his personal investment in the company was "not true." In a separate post, Schilling attempted to set an optimistic tone: "We will find a way, and the strength, to endure."<br />
<br />
We have been following <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/14/rumor-38-studios-may-be-having-financial-trouble/">the financial turmoil</a> that 38 Studios is in following <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/15/if-38-studios-goes-under-rhode-island-taxpayers-will-be-footing/">its default on paying back Rhode Island</a> for its $75 million loan. The studio and state <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/16/no-relief-in-sight-for-38-studios-after-emergency-meeting/">are looking for options</a>, but in the meanwhile, 38 Studios has been struggling to make payments <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/17/38-studios-paying-state-back-by-not-paying-employees/">by holding back employee paychecks</a> and seeking additional capital from private investors.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/18/38-studios-project-copernicus-to-release-in-june-2013-says-ri/">38 Studios' Project Copernicus to release in June 2013, says RI governor</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 18 May 2012 14:30:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/14/rumor-38-studios-may-be-having-financial-trouble/"><img alt="In fairness, the MMO was always about 50-50 on happening." src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/38studio-finance-epl-514.jpg" /></a></div>
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-Studios/">38 Studios</a> is one of many developers whose first big game (<em>Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning</em>) was rumored to lead into an MMO further on down the line. It looks like there may be storm clouds on the horizon before that project even gets moving, however, as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/14/rhode-island-gov-working-hard-at-keeping-38-studios-solvent/">the company may be facing financial issues</a>. Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee has apparently been meeting with owner <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Curt-Schilling/">Curt Schilling</a> to work on "different issues," with Chafee noting that his administration has always tried to ensure that Rhode Island companies remain financially solvent.<br />
<br />
If you consider that Rhode Island invested about $75 million in the company, it's obvious that the government has an interest in making the company remain viable over the long term. <em>Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning</em> was a moderate hit, but that might not be enough for the company as it develops. We'll have more on this story as it develops, hopefully with better news.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/14/rumor-38-studios-may-be-having-financial-trouble/">Rumor: 38 Studios may be having financial trouble</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 14 May 2012 20:20:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/runes-of-magic/"><em>Runes of Magic's</em></a> third anniversary is finally upon us. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/frogster/">Frogster</a> has been gearing up for the event by holding diamond sales and cash-shop specials. Each anniversary, you can also take part in multiple frog-related quests and events. Frog-bashing, frog disguises, and more frog-bashing have long been a staple. Frog-racing and frog etiquette have been added to the roster. What's frog etiquette? Why, it's either insulting or complimenting frogs, silly. During the festivities, various freebies are usually handed out to players who log in, as well.<br />
<br />
The real question is what's new in the land of Taborea, but if you wanted to know about new lands or dungeons, you'll have to wait a little bit longer. There's no official word, but given the time that's passed and the unofficial images and information that are floating around the Internet, we know <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/runes-of-magic-chapter-5/">Chapter 5</a> can't be too far off. There are still players out there who are far from making their way through the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/chapter-4/">Chapter 4</a> content, but many guilds on the cutting edge are starting to trample Tomb of the Seven Heroes into a well-worn path.<br />
<br />
During this intermediary period, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/runewaker-entertainment/">Runewaker</a> added the random attribute extractor and the costume interface. This isn't a replacement to aggregating; it's more like an extension. Most recently, the team introduced a patch containing bug fixes and a sprinkling of changes to the user interface, guilds, pets, vendor NPCs, quests, crafting, and skills. Some of the most exciting information is sketchy but does point to two possible new classes. And what class (or race?) could possibly have skills with names like "forge" and "runecraft" in them? Hmm...<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/19/runes-of-magic-on-its-third-anniversary/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Runes of Magic on its third anniversary</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/19/runes-of-magic-on-its-third-anniversary/">Runes of Magic on its third anniversary</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 19 Mar 2012 12:00:00 EST. You know, that pesky <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/elder-scrolls"><em>Elder Scrolls</em></a> MMO rumor just won't die. We've been hearing scuttlebutt of a Tamriel-themed massively multiplayer title for years now, and even though <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bethesda">Bethesda</a> has debunked such gossip in the past, Tom's Hardware is citing an "industry source" who says the title is a reality.<br />
<br />
The latest rumbling posits that the game will feature three factions and will take place several hundred years prior to the events of <em>Morrowind</em>, <em>Oblivion</em>, and <em>Skyrim</em>. Also, some sort of official announcement is supposedly scheduled for May. Following that, the source claims, the <em>Elder Scrolls</em> MMO will have a "presence at E3" in June.<br />
<br />
Bethesda has yet to comment, but we'll bring you the latest info as it happens.<br />
<br />

The rumor mill is churning fast and furious today as heavy speculation is swirling about a possible release date for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Diablo-III/"><em>Diablo III</em></a>: April 17th. This comes from Italian website <a href="http://www.mmorpgitalia.it/site/content.php?3417-Diablo-III-Fuori-il-17-Aprile!">mmorpgitalia</a>, which reports that retailers are clearing space for their shelves on the 17th after a tip from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/activision-blizzard/">Activision Italy</a>.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard/">Blizzard</a>, of course, is declining to comment on the rumor, although Game Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Jay-Wilson/">Jay Wilson </a>says that an "all-important announcement" -- most likely the release date -- is imminent. When asked on Twitter how soon the announcement would arrive (on a scale of 1-10), Wilson replied with a simple "9."<br />
<br />
Tomorrow begins the <a href="http://www.cebit.de/home">CeBIT 2012</a> trade show in Europe, and Blizzard will be present to show off the <em>Diablo III</em> beta. Stop us if you're heard this one before: There's a new MMO coming out of Korea. It's drop-dead gorgeous, it's built on the latest version of the Unreal engine, and it features fantasy armor that doesn't leave much to the imagination.<br />
<br />
No, it's not <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> or even <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/tera"><em>TERA</em></a>. The new kid on the block is called <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bless"><em>Bless</em></a>, and though we told you about the game <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/18/neowiz-partners-with-epic-games-korea-for-new-unreal-3-mmorpg/">back in October</a>, it's taken <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/neowiz">Neowiz</a> a while to come up with an English website. That website is now live (though it does take forever and a day to load). The site features a trailer, a few screenshots and character concepts, and brief snippets of lore that seem to indicate two factions (Cosmopolis and Hierapolis).<br />
<br />
We've heard a rumor that Neowiz has more than 150 developers working on the project, some of whom worked on <em>Aion</em>, <em>TERA</em>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lineage-2"><em>Lineage II</em></a>. We'll bring you more on the new title as it becomes available.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/27/new-korean-mmo-bless-reveals-english-website/">New Korean MMO Bless reveals English website</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 27 Feb 2012 10:00:00 EST. Rumor has it that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard">Blizzard</a> is hopping on the free-to-play crazy train. <a href="http://www.develop-online.net/news/39915/New-Blizzard-game-to-be-free-to-play">Develop</a> reports that the company "will embrace free-to-play and will apply the model in an upcoming, as yet unannounced game."<br />
<br />
The website says that Blizzard has declined to comment in an official capacity, and the site's source could not provide more details. It's been speculated that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>World of Warcraft's</em></a> recent <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/09/wow-loses-another-100-000-subscribers/">subscription losses</a>, the fact that <em>DOTA</em> is free-to-play, and the game's unlimited free trial though level 20 all indicate a shift in Blizzard's business model mindset.<br />
<br />
COO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/paul-sams">Paul Sams</a> also paid lip service to F2P at BlizzCon last October, saying that F2P "certainly is possible, if we find ourselves in that circumstance, or if we come up with a game where we think that's the right business model, the most appropriate for players to experience it."<br />
<br />
Could the long-awaited <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/titan">Project Titan</a> MMO be Blizzard's first F2P offering, or is a completely new title in the works? We'll update you as the story develops.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/23/rumor-blizzard-embracing-f2p-for-unannounced-game/">Rumor: Blizzard embracing F2P for unannounced game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 23 Feb 2012 11:00:00 EST. Could we finally have <a href="http://p3.no/filmpolitiet/2012/02/%E2%80%93-2012-kommer-til-a-bli-et-veldig-viktig-ar-for-funcom/">a specific launch date</a> for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-secret-world"><em>The Secret World</em></a>? Yes, but more accurately, no.<br />
<br />
While hopeful fans clung to possible news that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom">Funcom</a> had confirmed an April 24th launch date, the studio has issued a statement saying that this was "an internal production date" that was mentioned at a recent press event, and doesn't necessarily reflect the actual release date for the title:
<blockquote class="bq-standard">
	Funcom has become aware of postings in various media stating that commercial launch of the online game <em>The Secret World</em> has been set to 24 April 2012. This date was communicated at a press event in the Funcom offices in Oslo today -- as an internal production date.<br />
	<br />
	Funcom has previously announced the launch month for the game to be April 2012 and wants to stress that there is currently no change or update on the expected time for commercial launch of <em>The Secret World</em>. The company will announce the release date at a later stage through a stock notice and a formal press release when the date has been set.</blockquote>
The studio recently wrapped up a week dedicated to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/illuminati-week/">the Illuminati faction</a> and revealed one of the game's spooky settings, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/25/the-secret-worlds-blue-mountain-revealed/">Blue Mountain</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/08/funcom-debunks-the-secret-world-launch-date-rumor/">Funcom debunks The Secret World launch date rumor</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 08 Feb 2012 08:30:00 EST. 	<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/23/blizzard-scouting-a-franchise-development-producer-for-titan/"><img alt="Activision Blizzard" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/blizz.jpg" /></a></div>
When details of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard/">Blizzard's</a> upcoming casual MMO, code-named <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/titan/"><em>Titan</em></a>, are incredibly scarce due to the developer's ironclad secrecy, it falls to enterprising fans to ferret out any scraps of information that may exist. One such player on <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=459767">the NeoGAF forums</a> was combing through a Blizzard job posting for a <a href="http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/company/careers/posting.html?id=10000B3">Franchise Development Producer</a> and noted an interesting line that indicated the studio could be mulling over the idea of in-game ads for its next MMO.<br />
<br />
The line in question specifies that one of the duties of the position is to "work with major consumer brands to facilitate product placement and licensing within the world of Blizzard Entertainment's next-gen MMO that enhances the gameplay experience." Whether this is a sign that we'll be seeing billboards for Skittles while we raid or that players will be able to get endorsements and decorate their outfits a la NASCAR cars is anyone's guess.<br />
<br />
It's important to note that the rest of this position entails a number of efforts to promote Blizzard's "next-gen MMO" outside of the tight-knit gaming sphere, including comics, action figures, and short movies.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/23/blizzard-job-listing-mentions-product-placement-within-their-n/">Blizzard job listing mentions 'product placement' within its next MMO</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 23 Jan 2012 08:30:00 EST. It's been a rough couple of years for <em>Warhammer</em> MMORPG fans, and if the rumors are true, it's about to get a bit bleaker.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://kotaku.com/5876253/thq-wipes-out-games-planned-for-2014-to-ready-itself-for-sale-says-insider">Kotaku</a> reports on a tweet by games industry insider <a href="https://twitter.com/TheKevinDent">Kevin Dent</a> that indicates that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/thq/">THQ</a> has "canceled its entire 2014 slate of releases to position the company for sale." This would include <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-40k/"><em>Warhammer 40K: Dark Millennium Online</em></a>, which Dent referred to as "<a href="https://twitter.com/#!/TheKevinDent/status/158454172239409152">the Games Workshop MMO</a>" on his Twitter page.<br />

The recent spate of MMO industry layoffs isn't discriminating in terms of company size if the latest rumors are true. We've just been informed that one of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard">Blizzard's</a> golden boys has been served his walking papers, joining hundreds of devs from the likes of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gamersfirst">GamersFirst</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gameforge">GameForge</a>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP</a> in recent weeks.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/john-staats">John Staats</a>, the senior level designer on Blizzard's secretive <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/titan"><em>Titan</em></a> project, has been let go, according to our tipster. Staats has been with the company for over a decade and is responsible for some of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>World of Warcraft's</em></a> most celebrated content including all the raid dungeons, Blackrock Mountain and Booty Bay, and numerous other instanced dungeons.<br />
<br />
Staats was also described by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jeff-kaplan">Jeff Kaplan</a> as the "hero of the <em>WoW</em> dev team."<br />
<br />

If the rumors are true, today has not been the best of days for MMO industry staffers. Hot on the heels of our <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> layoff story comes distressing news for fans of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gamersfirst">GamersFirst</a>, as we've just received an anonymous tip concerning the apparent dismissal of 32 people from the firm's west coast office.<br />
<br />
According to our tipster, "Most of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/all-points-bulletin"><em>APB</em></a> team was let go. A lot of the support staff was let go. The development team was not, to my knowledge, so the game is still being developed in Scotland." We've also been told that GamersFirst's CFO was let go.<br />
<br />
We've reached out to G1 for clarification on this story, and as of press time there is no official word on the staffing decisions or how the shake-up will affect <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/fallen-earth"><em>Fallen Earth</em></a> and the rest of the company's free-to-play lineup.<br />
<br />

Mass conspiracy? Over-eager fans? Or deliberate misinformation? No matter what the case, it turns out that recent information about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-40k/"><em>Warhammer 40K: Dark Millennium Online</em></a> was not passed down by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/thq/">THQ</a> itself, and these "facts," such as the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/12/warhammer-40k-dark-millennium-online-launch-date-revealed/">launch date</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/13/thq-releases-flood-of-new-details-for-warhammer-40k-dark-millen/">class list</a>, should be treated as speculative rumors and nothing more.<br />
<br />
THQ sent a letter to several media outlets clarifying the situation:
<blockquote class="bq-standard">
	It has come to THQ's attention that some media are reporting that we've announced game details and a release date for our upcoming massively multiplayer online project, <em>Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium Online</em>. At this time THQ has not officially announced a release date and any reported features are pure speculation. THQ will announce confirmed game features and an official release date at a later time.</blockquote>
We will keep an eye on this title and the news coming out of THQ as it develops.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/13/thq-says-war40k-release-date-features-list-is-pure-speculation/">THQ says WAR40K release date, features list is 'pure speculation'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 13 Oct 2011 22:30:00 EST. If you've been among the vocal crowds demanding that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/BioWare/">BioWare</a> stop fiddling around with that "Star Wars thing" and get on a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mass-effect/"><em>Mass Effect</em></a> MMO as soon as possible, today might be your day of vindication. It turns out that BioWare's co-founders are very much open to the possibility of an online edition of its popular <em>Mass Effect</em> franchise.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ray-muzyka/">Ray Muzyka</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/greg-zeschuk/">Greg Zeschuk</a> recently fielded the ever-popular question in a much more upbeat tone than ever before. Zeschuk says the studio will evaluate a potential <em>Mass Effect </em>MMO in the near future: "You never know. I think once <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic">The Old Republic</a></em> is done, we'll take a fresh look at the market."<br />
<br />
"We're focused very much on <em>The Old Republic</em>, <em>Mass Effect 3</em> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wrath-of-heroes/"><em>Wrath of Heroes</em></a>, and all the other things we've announced, and haven't announced, but we also have the opportunity to look at our franchises in a way we haven't ever before. There are lots of new platforms and lots of new business models," Muzyka added.<br />

<em>Mass Effect: The MMO</em> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/11/mass-effect-the-mmo/">is one of those speculative rumors</a> that seems to never die. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/06/analyst-predicts-a-mass-effect-mmo-could-top-the-old-republic/">Analysts have predicted</a> that such an MMO could top <em>Star Wars: The Old Republic's</em> numbers.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/30/bioware-open-to-the-possibility-of-a-mass-effect-mmo/">BioWare open to the possibility of a Mass Effect MMO</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 30 Sep 2011 14:00:00 EST. Although the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/faxion-online/"><em>Faxion Online</em></a> team has <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/18/faxion-online-studio-hit-with-layoffs/">weathered layoffs</a> before, today it looks as though none have survived a recent culling.<br />
<br />
According to <a href="http://www.faxiononline.com/content/rip-faxion">a forum post</a> citing a former <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/utv/">UTV</a> employee, it's rumored that the entire team has been given their pink slips. "It is now officially dead," the unnamed source wrote. "They laid off the rest of the <em>Faxion </em>team, so there is no one left to do anything."<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/28/disney-looking-to-buy-out-faxion-online-developer/">Disney recently bought out UTV Ignition</a>, which oversees <em>Faxion</em> <em>Online</em>, and there was some speculation that the Mouse House might be making cuts in this struggling PvP MMO and elsewhere. So far this is an unconfirmed rumor, and it remains to be seen what impact this will have on <em>Faxion </em>going forward if true.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/17/rumor-entire-faxion-online-team-laid-off/">Rumor: Entire Faxion Online team laid off</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 17 Aug 2011 22:00:00 EST. First there was <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/the-burning-crusade/"><em>The Burning Crusade</em></a>, then <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wrath-of-the-lich-king/">Wrath of the Lich King</a></em>, and, most recently, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cataclysm/"><em>Cataclysm</em></a>. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>World of Warcraft's</em></a> expansions have been the lifeblood of literally millions of gamers' playtime, which is why many fans are anxiously awaiting word of the fourth expansion pack to the hit MMO.<br />
<br />
Today we may know the name of the expansion: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mists-of-pandaria/"><em>Mists of Pandaria</em></a>. According to MMO Champion, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard/">Blizzard</a> filed a trademark with this title on July 28th, which is exactly in line with how the company has procured titles for the previous expansions. The trademark specifies that this is for "computer game software."<br />
<br />
The Pandarens are one of the more light-hearted races in the Warcraft franchise, with kung fu panda bears from a secret empire somewhere in Azeroth. Despite being fan favorites, the Pandarens have been rarely seen in <em>WoW</em>, while Blizzard has used them in a couple different April Fool's jokes in the past.<br />
<br />
We'll be keeping our eyes on Blizzard for any official confirmation.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/03/has-wows-next-expansion-been-named/">Rumor: World of Warcraft's next expansion has been named</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 03 Aug 2011 08:30:00 EST. If the rumors are true (and we'd like to stress that these are simply rumors as of press time), <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bluehole-studio">Bluehole Studio</a> is undergoing something of a shakeup following the less-than-stellar showing of its <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/tera"><em>TERA</em></a> MMORPG in Korea.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/hyun-kyu-park">Hyun-Kyu Park</a>, <em>TERA's</em> executive director, has reportedly left the development firm due to an as-yet undetermined internal conflict. Our sources in Korea tell us that Park locked horns with other senior Bluehole executives due to his desire to postpone the game's open beta earlier this year. At the time, Park stepped down from his role as <em>TERA's</em> chief producer to become a producer on a forthcoming Bluehole title but is now rumored to have left the firm entirely.<br />
<br />
<em>TERA</em> launched in Korea on January 25th and Bluehole began merging servers <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/01/rumor-tera-korean-servers-merging/">earlier this summer</a>. Massively has contacted <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/en-masse">En Masse Entertainment</a>, <em>TERA's</em> North American publisher, and is awaiting a response.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/01/rumor-teras-korean-development-director-resigns/">Rumor: TERA's Korean development director resigns</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 01 Aug 2011 12:00:00 EST. <br />
As if to confirm <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/19/rumor-polish-retailer-leaks-swtor-pre-order-info/">the rumor from yesterday</a>, GameStop's website briefly displayed a pre-order page for the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> collector's edition. According to the page, the full collector's edition will be priced at $149.99 US and chock full of CE goodness.<br />
<br />
According to the rumor, the full collector's edition will contain these items physically in the box:<br />
<ul>
	<li>
		<em>Exclusive Gentle Giant Darth Malgus statue</em></li>
	<li>
		<em>Star Wars: The Old Republic game disks in collectible metal case</em></li>
	<li>
		<em>The Journal of Master Gnost-Dural annotated by Satele Shan</em></li>
	<li>
		<em>The Old Republic galaxy map</em></li>
	<li>
		<em>Music of Star Wars: The Old Republic CD</em></li>
	<li>
		<em>High-quality Collector's Edition box</em></li>
</ul>
Also, when the game goes live your account will be granted these seven additional digital items:
<ul>
	<li>
		<em>Flare Gun: Fire flares into the air</em></li>
	<li>
		<em>Training Droid: Hovers at your side for combat assistance</em></li>
	<li>
		<em>HoloDancer: Project your own holographic dancer</em></li>
	<li>

	<li>
		<em>Exclusive Mouse Droid: Spunky Droid to join your adventures</em></li>
	<li>
		<em>Exclusive Collector's Edition Store: Unique in-game vendor with an assortment of items</em></li>
</ul>
If that was not enough, Gamestop's pre-order is said to grant early access to the game as well as a crystal that changes the color effect on your weapon. Perhaps tomorrow we will hear the official information at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/san-diego-comic-con-2011/">San Diego Comic-con</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/20/swtor-preorder-confirmed-by-gamestop/">SWTOR pre-order confirmed by Gamestop?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 20 Jul 2011 18:30:00 EST. Most of the game's fans are aware that there will be some announcement made regarding the game once <a href="http://www.comic-con.org/">San Diego Comic-Con</a> starts up on Thursday, but suspicions seem confirmed when <a href="http://www.empik.com/">Polish retailer Empik.com</a> released what looked to be pre-order information complete with box art for the game.<br />
<br />
Needless to say, the actual entry for the order was quickly pulled from the page, but the box art image remains available, including mention of a pre-order "colour stone to change your weapon effect." Plausible? Considering how many fans are waiting with bated breath to get a release date on the game, it's certainly believable that a release or pre-order is among the orders of business at the convention. It might seem like a bit of a thin framework for fans to pin their hopes on... but even so, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic">Star Wars: The Old Republic</a></em> fans should keep their eyes open during SDCC to see if it turns out to be an accurate forecast of coming announcements.<br />
<br />
[Thanks to all of the tipsters on this one!]<br />

	<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><img border="1" hspace="4" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/fearless.jpg" vspace="4" /></a></div>
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/21/controversy-brewing-over-eve-online-microtransactions/">In the wake of controversy</a> surrounding <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>'s new microtransaction store and its not-so-micro prices, a document has surfaced that has raised more than a few eyebrows in the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/">EVE</a></em> community. The PDF is reported to be a copy of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games/">CCP</a>'s internal company newsletter Fearless. Ex-CCP employee and current CSM member Seleene was <a href="http://failheap-challenge.com/viewtopic.php?p=121170#p121170">able to verify that the company does circulate</a> an internal newsletter by that name and that the style is very similar to the leaked document. However, the absolute authenticity of the document can not at this time be proven.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.evenews24.com/2011/06/22/greed-is-good-purportedly-leaked-internal-bulletin-shows-ccps-refreshing-new-direction/">The document dates back to May 2011</a> and discusses how microtransactions will be integrated into <em>EVE Online</em>, <em><a href="http://www.dust514.com">DUST 514</a></em> and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-darkness">World of Darkness</a></em>. Most of the document is fairly harmless, but a few parts have stood out to players. According to the document, <em>"Not all virtual purchases </em>[in EVE Online]<em> will focus on customization: some will simply be new items, ammunition, ships, etc. that can be purchased outright."</em> Also mentioned is the possibility of buying faction standings. Both of these would be in complete contrast to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/23/eve-online-microtransactions-wont-impact-gameplay/">earlier promises from CCP not to allow microtransactions</a> that influence gameplay.<br />
<br />
Authenticity of the document is still in question, but we can reveal that the leaked PDF has had several pages removed before being made public. A <a href="http://www.mediafire.com/?ccl135embyb6c2v">link to the full version</a> was later <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/HelicityBoson/status/83669623131738112">leaked on twitter</a>. Page 2 of the document, which was omitted in the originally leaked file, contains a disclaimer stating that the views presented are personal opinions and not company policies or decisions. This adds further confusion as players attempt to make sense of the file's contents. We reached out to CCP to ask about the document's authenticity and to request clarification on the discussions presented in it. We'll update this post with any response we get.<br />
<br />
<strong>[UPDATE: The document's authenticity has <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&amp;threadID=1536065&amp;page=5#126">been confirmed by CCP Pann</a> from CCPs PR department. We've been on mystical pins and needles for the past week as the countdown continues to tomorrow's full reveal of <a href="http://www.pottermore.com/">Pottermore</a>, a mysterious website bearing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jk-rowling/">J.K. Rowling's</a> name. <a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2011/06/leaked-memo-reveals-pottermore-will-be-online-gaming-website/240848/">The Atlantic reports</a> that a leaked memo making the rounds spells out the truth: Pottermore will be an online game of sorts.<br />
<br />
The memo <em>"suggests that [Pottermore.com] is a sophisticated online game that contains clues to prizes that are hidden in the real world. These are an unstated number of magic wands secreted in Britain and America, and possibly other countries."</em><br />
<br />
This sounds more like an <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arg/">ARG</a> -- alternate reality game -- than an MMO, although we're not prepared to rule out the possibility until all is said and revealed. The article mentions that this could be a marketing tool tied into Pottermore instead of Pottermore proper.<br />
<br />
Fans who'd love to see a Harry Potter MMO still have hope that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/16/rumor-is-pottermore-the-upcoming-harry-potter-mmo/">this could be the real deal</a>, but we won't know for sure until tomorrow's announcement.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/22/leaked-memo-says-pottermore-is-an-online-game/">Leaked memo says Pottermore is an online game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 22 Jun 2011 14:00:00 EST. 	<a href="http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/middleearthonline/news/6320286/turbine-crafting-project-hendrix-console-mmo-game"><img border="1" hspace="4" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/consolewars.jpg" vspace="4" /></a></div>
Internet scuttlebutt has it that <a href="http://turbine.com">Turbine</a> is cooking up a console MMO codenamed Project Hendrix. A posting at <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/middleearthonline/news/6320286/turbine-crafting-project-hendrix-console-mmo-game">GameSpot</a> cites a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/turbine">Turbine</a> job listing that seeks an engineer for an "<em>unannounced online console project</em>." The article also mentions the resume of one <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/josh-phelan">Josh Phelan</a>, a Turbine employee who apparently mentioned the Hendrix title in his online resume (which has since <a href="http://joshphelan.com/">gone dark</a>).<br />
<br />
Turbine's console aspirations are <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/news/6228694/turbine-on-spinning-console-mmorpgs">nothing new</a>, as studio VP <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/craig-alexander">Craig Alexander</a> hinted at such desires as early as 2009. Commenter speculation links the job listing to the mysterious <a href="http://www.pottermore.com/"><em>Pottermore</em></a> title, and given Turbine's acquisition by <a href="http://www.warnerbros.com/">Warner Brothers</a> (which also owns the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/16/rumor-is-pottermore-the-upcoming-harry-potter-mmo/"><em>Pottermore</em></a> trademark), it's not unreasonable to suspect that the sorting hat could be getting ready to assign a Potter MMO to House Turbine.<br />
<br />

The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/harry-potter/">Harry Potter</a> fan base was abuzz yesterday as <a href="http://www.pottermore.com/">a mysterious new website</a> was launched. The site itself is rather bare, merely sporting the words "Pottermore: Coming Soon" and J.K. Rowling's signature underneath, but there's reason to believe that this may be connected to an online game.<br />
<br />
It gets interesting when you look at <a href="http://www.trademarkia.com/pottermore-77788415.html">Pottermore's trademark page</a>, which lists the trademark as being owned by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/warner-bros/">Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.</a> and describes the product as follows:
<blockquote class="bq-standard">
	<em><span id="ctl00_mainBody_lblGoodService">Providing multiple-user access to a global computer information network; providing on-line chat rooms and electronic bulletin boards for transmission of messages among users in the field of general interest; providing on-line communications links which transfer the web site user to other local and global web pages; providing on-line facilities for real-time interaction with other computer users concerning topics of general interest</span>.</em></blockquote>
<a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2011/jun/16/harry-potter-jk-rowling-pottermore">The Guardian</a> notes that Pottermore could stand for "Potter Multiplayer Online Role-playing Experience," among other things. An editor at <a href="http://www.hpana.com/news.21283.html">HPANA</a> was one of the few to get a glimpse of the full site, commenting, <em>"It is breathtaking in scope, detail and sheer beauty."</em> Meanwhile, on <a href="http://www.youtube.com/JKRowlingAnnounces">YouTube's JKRowlingAnnounces channel</a>, a timer is counting down to an announcement as to why "the owls are gathering" sometime on the 23rd.<br />
<br />
Of course, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/05/the-perfect-ten-why-a-harry-potter-mmo-makes-sense/">a Harry Potter MMO</a> has been <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/17/the-likelihood-of-a-matured-harry-potter-mmo/">heavily rumored</a> for some time now, perhaps in association with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/turbine/">Turbine</a> (which is owned by WB). It's a tenuous connection but a possibility as well, so we'll be keeping our eyes on the site to see what transpires!<br />
<br />

<em>Captain's Log, Stardate 64918.1...</em><br />
<br />
Hello, computer (and players)! Isn't it amazing how the MMO gaming world works? One week you might be ecstatic about the planned updates for your favorite game, and the next week you are wondering if that same game is even going to last another day. Like many other <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> players, I was in this boat just last week. When <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/atari" target="_blank">Atari</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/17/atari-cryptic-studios-a-discontinued-operation/" target="_blank">announced</a> that it was going to be divesting interest in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic" target="_blank">Cryptic</a>, many players initially went into panic mode. But as I stated in my <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/26/captains-log-the-breakup/" target="_blank">entry last week</a>, I strongly felt that things were going to turn out just fine, possibly for the better -- and they definitely have.<br />
<br />
Earlier this week, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/perfect-world" target="_blank">Perfect World Entertainment</a> announced that it would acquire a 100% equity stake from Atari, with Cryptic Studios remaining as the sole shareholder. Made famous for its free-to-play games, including <a href="https://register.perfectworld.com/pwiad9" target="_blank"><em>Perfect World International</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pocketpet-journey-west/" target="_blank"><em>Pocketpet Journey West</em></a>, and <a href="https://register.perfectworld.com/fwad4" target="_blank"><em>Forsaken World</em></a>, Perfect World has the potential to help <em><a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online" target="_blank">STO</a></em> continue to grow. While the new owners are very excited at the opportunity to utilize the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic-engine/" target="_blank">engine</a> Cryptic is famous for, they are also excited at the fact that <a href="http://www.champions-online.com" target="_blank"><em>Champions Online</em></a> uses the free-to-play business model. Oh dear -- here we go again.<br />

<a href="http://www.bluehole.net/eng/">Bluehole Studio's</a> <em><a href="http://tera-online.com/">TERA</a></em> action MMORPG is gearing up for its second round of Korean server merges since launch according to a blurb at <a href="http://www.mmoculture.com/2011/06/tera-korea-major-server-merge-coming.html">MMO Culture</a>. The fantasy title, which is currently being prepared for a North American release by <a href="http://enmasse.com/">En Masse Entertainment</a>, is scheduled to trim its list of 35 shards to 15 this week.<br />
<br />
Despite more upbeat news of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/01/frogster-hints-at-expansive-new-tera-update/">fresh content</a> in the offing, the merges come amid reports of lower-than-expected financial performance according to publisher <a href="http://www.nhncorp.com/nhn/index.nhn">NHN Korea</a>. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/tera"><em>TERA</em></a> launched in Korea last February and is gearing up for a Japanese beta on July 1st. No North American or European beta dates have been announced.<br />
<br />
<strong>[Update]:</strong> <em>TERA's</em> main <a href="http://tera.hangame.com/">Korean website</a> does provide both official confirmation of server merges as well as time projections. <p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/01/rumor-tera-korean-servers-merging/">Rumor: TERA Korean servers merging [Updated]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 01 Jun 2011 15:30:00 EST. The land of Hyrule may be invading your computer very soon -- or maybe <em>you</em> will be invading <em>it</em>. <a href="http://nintendo.com">Nintendo</a>, creator of the console hit the <a href="http://zelda.com"><em>Legend of Zelda</em></a>, has just registered for an <a href="http://esrb.org">ESRB</a> rating for a game called <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/zelda-universe"><em>Zelda Universe</em></a>. According to the ESRB website, this mysterious game has received an "E" rating with "violence" as the only descriptive text, but the game is listed as "online." Although all other Nintendo games have a console listed along with the rating, this particular title does not. This could very well mean that everyone's favorite adventurer will appear in an MMORPG.<br />
<br />
The official website for the <em>Legend of Zelda</em> games is called <a href="http://zelda.com/universe/">Zelda Universe</a>, but the Entertainment Software Rating Board is not in the habit of handing out ratings to online content unless that content is also a game. Perhaps this is one of the big announcements Nintendo will reveal in its presentation at the <a href="http://e3expo.com">Electronic Entertainment Expo</a> in less than 12 days.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/26/is-zelda-about-to-hit-the-mmo-space/">Is Zelda about to hit the MMO space?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 26 May 2011 21:00:00 EST. <em>Captain's Log, Stardate 64903.4...</em><br />
<br />
Hello, computer (and players)! When most relationships come to an end, the dumpee can often feel a sense of abandonment. As <em><a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/" target="_blank">Star Trek Online</a> </em>players, we are currently feeling something similar after the announcement that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/atari" target="_blank">Atari</a> is "parting" ways with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic" target="_blank">Cryptic</a>. As we <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/17/atari-cryptic-studios-a-discontinued-operation/" target="_blank">noted last week</a>, Atari announced during its May earnings report that Cryptic is a now "discontinued operation," which leaves us pondering what will become of the game we are so passionate about.<br />
<br />
In an attempt to counter the rumors flying on the internet, I spoke with Cryptic's PR team and can confirm that that there is no official press release yet and there are no comments that have been or can be made by Cryptic. So all the rumors out there about what is going on are currently just that... rumors. All we know right now is that Atari is planning on putting Cryptic Studios up for sale. With that said, and rumors aside, I would like to share some of my thoughts, explore the feelings of the playerbase, clear up some misconceptions, and explain why this could actually be the best thing to happen to <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online" target="_blank"><em>STO</em></a>.<br />
<br />

How would a <a href="http://www.rockstargames.com/episodesfromlibertycity/agegate/ref/?redirect="><em>Grand Theft Auto</em></a> MMO grab you? Would you play a <a href="http://www.rockstargames.com/reddeadredemption/agegate/ref/?redirect="><em>Red Dead Redemption</em></a> or <a href="http://www.rockstargames.com/lanoire/agegate/ref/?redirect="><em>LA Noire</em></a> massively multiplayer title? While the possibility of said games still falls into the rumor category at this point, we can confirm that <a href="http://www.take2games.com/">Take-Two Interactive</a> has entered into a partnership with <a href="http://xlgames.com/">XL Games</a> to make one of the former's existing properties into an MMO.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/xl-games">XL</a> has been in the news recently due to its upcoming <a href="http://www.archeage.com/en"><em>ArcheAge</em></a> sandpark, and the company founded by noted <a href="http://www.lineage.com/"><em>Lineage</em></a> developer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jake-song">Jake Song</a> will work on the new title with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/take-two-interactive">Take-Two</a> subsidiary <a href="http://www.2kgames.com/#/">2K Games</a>. <a href="http://kotaku.com/5804523/take+two-game-to-be-mmorpg">Kotaku</a> first reported the rumor to the English-speaking world earlier this morning, while the source is Korean website <a href="http://www.4gamer.net/games/133/G013341/20110523041/">4gamer</a>.<br />
<br />
A press release has also been issued by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/2k-games">2K</a>; CEO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/christoph-hartmann">Christoph Hartmann</a> hints at the company's desire to broaden its horizons. "<em>Our partnership with XL Games underscores our ongoing commitment to expanding 2K's presence in online gaming and the Asian market</em>," Hartmann explains. XL's Song says that work on the new title is ongoing. "<em>We have already been working together for a year on the game, and I can tell you this is one of the most exciting projects that I've ever undertaken</em>," he said.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/23/take-two-signs-with-xlgames-to-make-existing-property-into-an-mm/">Take-Two signs with XLGames to make existing property into an MMO</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 23 May 2011 10:30:00 EST. If you have been following <a href="http://www.bungie.net/">Bungie</a>, then you are well aware of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/17/further-details-emerge-on-the-canceled-halo-mmo/">alleged MMO</a> in development by the creators of the single-player first-person shooter series <a href="http://halo.xbox.com/en-us"><em>Halo</em></a>. Most are also aware of the "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/17/wow-in-space-bungies-mmofps-named-destiny/"><em>World of Warcraft</em> in space</a>" quote from a supposed ex-Bungie employee in the geek blog <a href="http://uk.kotaku.com/5762663/is-destiny-the-next-game-from-the-creators-of-halo">Kotaku</a>. In that same article, the source named <em>Project Tiger</em> by another name: <em>Destiny</em>. At the time, there was nothing to validate the claims of the article, until now.<br />
<br />
Now may be a good time to don your tinfoil hat.<br />

On the fan site <a href="http://halo.bungie.org/news.html?item=33340">Halo.Bungie.org</a>, a blogger may have discovered an actual connection between the words of the ex-Bungie employee and the name <em>Destiny</em>. While tracing the activities of Bungie employees, this intrepid pursuer found <a href="http://www.sos.wa.gov/corps/search_results.aspx?search_type=simple&amp;criteria=all&amp;name_type=contains&amp;name=podophobia&amp;ubi=">Podophobia Entertainment</a> a company formed by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Harold-Ryan">Harold Ryan</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Martin-ODonnell">Martin O'Donnell</a> of Bungie. One of the trademarks issued by this company was the name <em>Destiny</em> listed as "computer game software downloadable from a global computer network."<br />
<br />
Massively will let you draw your own conclusion for this, but pictured above is the trademarked logo for Podophobia's <em>Destiny</em> and next to that a Bungie employee wearing that same logo on a t-shirt. Speculation and excitement are the order of the day on both the <a href="http://forums-eu.ageofconan.com/showthread.php?t=166446">European</a> and <a href="http://forums-us.ageofconan.com/showthread.php?t=233192">American</a> forums for <a href="http://ageofconan.com"><em>Age of Conan</em></a>. What's all the hubbub about? Two new lands are purportedly in the works, and this jibes with a cryptic comment by <a href="http://funcom.com">Funcom</a> game director Craig "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/craig-morrison">Silirrion</a>" Morrison in last month's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/29/monthly-update-lays-out-age-of-conan-development-roadmap/">development update</a>.<br />
<br />
"<em>This is where we get to the stuff we can't quite talk about just yet... yes, a little teasing I know, but trust us, it is far more frustrating not being able to talk about what is coming just yet. These will be important updates, with two new and important elements incoming</em>," Morrison wrote.<br />
<br />
Fans are speculating that the two new and important elements are in fact two Hyborian provinces filled with a multitude of new zones, specifically Turan and Ardashir. Massively has confirmed that bringing up the in-game player search tab and filtering by region shows two new headings labeled Turan and Ardashir alongside the pre-existing countries of Aquilonia, Cimmeria, Stygia, and Khitai. There is also a bit of conjecture on the official boards regarding <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom">Funcom's</a> annual report, which <a href="http://forums-eu.ageofconan.com/showthread.php?t=166321">says in part</a> that 2011 will bring "<em>significant content and story tie-ins with the [new Conan] <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/08/the-anvil-of-crom-can-funcom-capitalize-on-the-conan-film-reboo/">movie</a></em>." We'll keep you updated as this story develops and as we get official word from the devs.<br />

Rumors have been flying since yesterday afternoon that it's the end of the line for <a href="http://theagency.station.sony.com/"><em>The Agency</em></a>'s studio. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/george-broussard">George Broussard</a>, one of the minds behind the <a href="http://www.dukenukemforever.com/full/us/">Duke Nukem</a> games, made <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/georgeb3dr">several announcements on Twitter</a> last night that the studio will be closing today:

<blockquote class="bq-standard">
Word that <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/sony-online-entertainment">Sony Online Entertainment</a> Seattle is having layoffs and that studio closure is possible.</em><br />
<br />
To be more clear, the layoffs may be SOE wide and not just limited to Seattle. So, Austin, San Diego, etc...<br />
<br />
SOE Seattle and other studios (Denver is rumored) will be closed tomorrow. Good luck to all impacted.</blockquote>

In addition, Kotaku is reporting that these layoffs could affect <a href="http://kotaku.com/#!5787461/sonys-mmo-makers-close-three-studios-lay-off-one+third-of-workforce">nearly one-third of SOE's total staff</a>. Sony Online Entertainment has not released any statement or announcement to confirm this, so it's uncertain whether Broussard has inside information or is merely getting a jump on April Fool's Day. We'll be watching for official word back from SOE, so keep your eye on Massively for more.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/31/rumor-soe-to-close-the-agency-studio/">Rumor: SOE to close The Agency studio</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 31 Mar 2011 09:00:00 EST. The modern era of MMOs began in 1997 with a little game called <a href="http://www.uoherald.com"><em>Ultima Online</em></a>, and it's fair to say that the genre would look very different if that first example hadn't gone live. These days, outside of a dedicated playerbase and stalwart fans, the game is no longer at the center of attention. But there are a lot of players who still remember it fondly as an introduction to the field... and there are hints here and there that <a href="http://www.gamefront.com/evidence-suggests-new-ultima-mmo/">it might be time for a sequel to the game that started it all</a>.<br />
<br />
It's a known fact that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Paul-Barnett/">Paul Barnett</a> has been hinting at a secret project that is quite possibly an RPG, and it's also no secret that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Electronic-Arts/">Electronic Arts</a> is recruiting for an MMO programmer at its Redwood location. The company has also stepped up defending its trademarks for the <em>Ultima</em> franchise of late, which leads to a bit of interesting speculation. Could it be time for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Ultima-Online/">Ultima Online</a></em> to get a sequel and a new generation of players, a project which has been started and stopped twice before? There's <a href="http://www.gamefront.com/evidence-suggests-new-ultima-mmo/">surely something happening behind the scenes</a>...<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/30/rumor-a-new-ultima-mmo-might-be-in-the-works/">Rumor: A new Ultima MMO might be in the works</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 30 Mar 2011 20:00:00 EST. When it comes to game development, it's somewhat common to see a layoff or realignment of development team members shortly after the release of a title. However, it appears that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/NetDevil/">NetDevil</a>'s most recent round of layoffs came as a complete surprise to its employees. After all, the company's most recent release, <a href="http://universe.lego.com"><em>LEGO Universe</em></a>, is well past that initial post-launch phase, having gone live back in October 2010, and both <a href="http://www.jumpgateevolution.com"><em>Jumpgate Evolution</em></a> and <em><a href="http://www.fortuneonline.com">Fortune Online</a></em> are (at least supposedly) under development currently at the studio. There are <a href="http://www.netdevil.com/employment/">jobs posted on the hiring page</a>, as well.<br />
<br />
However, it appears that the developer, owned by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Gazillion-Entertainment/">Gazillion Entertainment</a>, is on shaky ground as of this morning, according to rumors. The truly horrible thing about this isn't that some developers were laid off -- it's how the affected employees found out. It appears that some of the NetDevil employees were notified that they were going to be laid off via Facebook postings before they were officially contacted by the company, <a href="http://tcanimation.blogspot.com/2011/02/laid-of-from-netdevil.html">according to a blog posting by Toby Cochran</a>, who worked as a character/creature animator on <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/LEGO-Universe/">LEGO Universe</a></em>. Apparently <a href="http://www.gamepron.com/news/2011/02/23/no-more-netdevil-lego-universe-studio-closes/">an image showing a tombstone with the inscription "NetDevil R.I.P. Oct 1997-Feb 2011"</a> started making the rounds on social networking sites shortly thereafter, indicating a far bleaker picture than just that of layoffs.<br />
<br />
We've reached out to NetDevil and Gazillion Entertainment for comment on the rumors and what, if anything, it will mean for the development of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Jumpgate-Evolution/">Jumpgate Evolution</a></em> and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Fortune-Online/">Fortune Online</a></em>. We'll be sure to update this post as soon as we have further information. In the meantime, we hope that all the talented, hard-working NetDevil employees who were affected are able to land fabulous new well-paying spots elsewhere, continuing to do what they love.<br />
<br />
<strong>[Update: We received the following statement from NetDevil: "<em>The transition of members of our team to the LEGO Group allows us to conclude the work-for-hire segment of NetDevil's business and lets us expand our internally-published, free-to-play game businesses based on our own properties and licensed properties. Gazillion is wholly focused on developing, operating, and publishing the next generation of browser-delivered games</em>," said David Brevik, President and COO. "<em>We're proud of the </em>LEGO Universe <em>game that our team built, and we are certain that it has a bright future</em>."]</strong><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/24/netdevil-lays-off-large-portion-of-its-staff/">NetDevil lays off large portion of its staff [Updated]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 24 Feb 2011 10:00:00 EST. As I'm writing this, it's Sunday, and I've just finished talking to <a href="http://twitter.com/garygannon">Gary Gannon</a> and <a href="http://twitter.com/akamikeb">Mike B</a> of <a href="http://www.gamebreaker.tv">Gamebreaker.tv</a>. Although I had planned to talk about character creation in this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/hyperspace-beacon/">Hyperspace Beacon</a> because it's been such a hot topic for other games, I realized that I may have been wrong in a couple of my statements regarding the originality of <em><a href="http://swtor.com">Star Wars: The Old Republic's</a> </em>mechanics. In comments on <a href="http://moseisleyradio.com/">Mos Eisley Radio</a>, I've said that combat mechanics in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>SWTOR</em></a> are very similar to what you'd find in most MMOs. I believe I am going to have to take those statements back, if slightly. During <a href="http://www.gamebreaker.tv/the-republic-25-quesh/">the conversation with Gamebreaker</a>, it occurred to me that even though the mechanics are familiar to most MMO players, they aren't exactly structured the way most MMOs build them.<br />
<br />
This prompted me to take a closer look at other mechanics we have been told about that differ from those in other MMOs. Is crafting different? How about other combat systems? I agree that there is an air of familiarity to all these mechanics. Why do they feel familiar? How are they different? Follow me after the break to explore these questions.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/25/hyperspace-beacon-gameplay-mechanics-twisted-and-evil/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hyperspace Beacon: Gameplay mechanics -- twisted and evil</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/25/hyperspace-beacon-gameplay-mechanics-twisted-and-evil/">Hyperspace Beacon: Gameplay mechanics -- twisted and evil</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 25 Jan 2011 15:30:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/john-smedley/">John Smedley</a>, the President of <a href="http://soe.com">Sony Online Entertainment</a>, is a big tease. Players are clamoring for information about all the new games SOE is releasing this year: <a href="http://dcuniverseonline.com"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> just released, but fans already want to know more about the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/03/exclusive-interview-terrorizing-the-green-lantern-with-dcuos-r/">promised monthly updates</a>. We're all looking forward to <a href="http://theagency.station.sony.com/"><em>The Agency</em></a>, which has been quiet for about nine months and is rumored to come out this year. Then there's <a href="http://planetside.station.sony.com/"><em>PlanetSide Next</em></a>, which seems to be on the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/17/smedley-talks-dcuo-launch-and-planetside-next-beta/">tip of Smedley's tongue</a>, too. His hints about beta testing suggest the game will launch this year as well.<br />
<br />
Imagine the speculation that erupted when <a href="http://twitter.com/j_smedley/status/28620036029546496">Smedley tweeted</a>, "<em>NC ftw!</em>" then a link to the picture above. What does it mean? We suspect "NC" stands for "New Conglomerate" from <a href="http://planetside.station.sony.com/"><em>PlanetSide</em></a>. Is that a New Conglomerate tank? It has to be; <a href="http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/01/22/the-first-image-from-planetside-next/">Rock, Paper, Shotgun agrees</a>. Is Smedley teasing us with the idea that we can battle in tanks in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/planetside-next/"><em>PlanetSide Next</em></a>? We can only hope so. It looks like SOE's got some exciting things planned for us in the coming year!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/23/smedley-entices-us-with-the-first-image-from-planetside-next/">Smedley entices us with the first image from PlanetSide Next</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 23 Jan 2011 15:00:00 EST. Despite the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/04/tera-north-american-release-rumors-abound/">recent rumors</a> of a prolonged delay in the North American/European testing and release schedule, there are still plenty of interesting goings-on in the world of <a href="http://tera-online.com"><em>TERA</em></a>. <a href="http://www.thisisgame.com/board/view.php?id=561843&amp;board=&amp;category=12501&amp;subcategory=&amp;page=1&amp;best=&amp;searchmode=&amp;search=&amp;orderby=&amp;token=">ThisisGame.com</a> has once again published an interview with <a href="http://www.bluehole.net/eng/">Bluehole Studio</a> heavyweights (including <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/tera"><em>TERA's</em></a> executive developer, CEO, and lead graphic artist), and once again the Korean original has been translated by the folks at <a href="http://www.terafans.com/topic/6480-tig-open-beta-qa-with-bhs/?s=42ead51d30cf25a843668480d13180f0">TERAfans</a>.<br />
<br />
There are quite a few interesting nuggets to be found throughout the piece, none more curious than the apparent closed beta tweaks to the game's much-ballyhooed targeting system. We'd like to stress "apparent" here because in the absence of confirmation from North American publisher <a href="http://enmasse.com">En Masse Entertainment</a>, these translations fall squarely under the rumor sub-heading. That said, if the info is accurate, it represents a shift from what we've heard of the game's combat thus far.<br />
<br />
"TERA<em> is an MMORPG with action elements, but the game itself is not an action game. If we call </em>TERA<em> a non-targeting game, many people expect an action game. Throughout the game's various tests, we tried to make </em>TERA<em> easier to get into, adding a lock-on system and many other improvements. After those changes we also decided to rename the non-targeting system to "free targeting system". Let's be honest free targeting rolls off the tongue better doesn't it? It doesn't sound so negative</em>," the article says.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/05/tera-interview-translation-hints-at-targeting-and-combat-changes/">TERA interview translation hints at targeting and combat changes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 05 Jan 2011 14:00:00 EST. A storm is brewing on <a href="http://enmasse.com">En Masse Entertainment's</a> official <a href="http://tera-online.com"><em>TERA</em></a> forums, one that threatens to bring more drama to the intarwebs, kill helpless Popori in their beds, and delay <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/tera"><em>TERA's</em></a> North American release for months. OK, maybe the first two are a bit overwrought, but there are <a href="http://www.terafans.com/topic/6453-tig-qa-hints-at-naeu-testing-period/?s=03bcb24a656826455dfcef896bd218c6">rumors</a> regarding the game's possible late 2011 arrival swirling around the internet. <br />
<br />
It all started with an interview at a Korean website called <a href="http://www.thisisgame.com/board/view.php?id=561681&amp;category=103&amp;subcategory=">ThisIsGame.com</a>, which spoke with <a href="http://www.bluehole.net/eng/">Bluehole Studio</a> boss Kang-Suk Kim. Fan translations of the interview seem to indicate that <em>TERA</em> will launch in Japan during the first half of 2011 and North American/European beta testing will begin a month later (which would lead to an even later final release date). So far though, the dates are a mixture of speculation and conjecture as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/en-masse-entertainment">En Masse</a> (<em>TERA's</em> North American publisher) has declined to offer any clarification.<br />
<br />

Fans who pre-ordered <a href="http://dcuniverseonline.com"><em>DC Universe</em><em> Online</em></a> from Amazon awoke to a pleasant surprise (or is that a tease?) in their inbox this morning. An order update email was sent out by the online shopping megalith indicating that <a href="http://soe.com">SOE's</a> superhero extravaganza will be shipping in mid January with an estimated arrival date somewhere between the 18th and the 20th.<br />
<br />
"<em>We have received new release date information related to the order you placed on October 08 2010 (Order# XXXX). The item(s) listed below will actually ship sooner than we originally expected based on the new release date</em>," says the message.<br />
<br />

<a href="http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/">Blizzard</a> has kept its newest MMO project under tight wraps despite some <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/09/analysts-speculate-on-leaked-blizzard-release-schedule/">corporate leakage earlier this month</a>. However, <a href="http://www.destructoid.com/vgas-interviews-mortal-kombat-and-blizzard-189714.phtml">Destructoid seems to have a confirmation</a> from <a href="http://worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a>'s Executive Producer Frank Pearce that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/titan/"><em>Titan</em></a> is the name of the company's next big project. Pearce told Destructoid, "Titan<em>... the media is not supposed to know anything about that. It's our next-gen MMO, and we've only started talking about it in a limited fashion because we wanna leverage the fact that we're working on something like that for the purpose of recruiting, getting some of the best talent in the industry on that project.</em>"<br />
<br />
However, <em>Titan</em> may only be an internal title for the -- obviously -- massive project. The title is not meant to replace <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>WoW</em></a>, according to Blizzard President Mike Morhaime. "<em>We think that </em>World of Warcraft<em> can continue co-existing with our new MMO</em>," he said in <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/video/blizzcon-2010-blizzcon-2010/706748">a GameTrailers interview at BlizzCon 2010</a>.<br />
<br />
Massively will be sure to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/titan/">keep you informed</a> as more news becomes available.<br />
