It's an exciting time to be an <em><a href="http://www.eve-online.com">EVE Online</a></em> capsuleer, especially if you have the ability to make it to Iceland or are <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/19/schedule-posted-for-the-eve-fanfest-livestream/">checking out the livestreams</a>. For the rest of us desk-bound mortals who weren't able to hop across the pond to make it to <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/eve-fanfest">Fanfest 2011</a>, well... there's always next year! Even now, pilots are partying down with the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/CCP/">CCP</a> development team and talking all things internet spaceships while others are networking. We'd bet there's probably even a bit of setup for an in-game scam or two going on as well. We <em>are</em> talking about <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/EVE-Online/">EVE Online</a>,</em> after all.<br />
<br />
Thankfully, we here at Massively have sent two of our own intrepid adventurers to get into the thick of the action: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/shawn-schuster/">Shawn Schuster</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/brendan-drain/">Brendan Drain</a>. These two brave souls are facing the crowds at the top of the world to catch all the myriad events this weekend and have sent us some <strike>Quafe t-shirts</strike> field reports of all the action going on at Fanfest 2011. First up, it's a tasty overview of this year's opening keynote. So grab your drink of choice and join us after the break for more!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/25/eve-fanfest-2011-keynote-from-the-top-of-the-world/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Online Fanfest 2011: Keynote from the top of the world</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/25/eve-fanfest-2011-keynote-from-the-top-of-the-world/">EVE Online Fanfest 2011: Keynote from the top of the world</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 25 Mar 2011 19:30:00 EST. <em>Keith Neilson is a Massively guest-writer who's here to recount his experiences at the recent Council of Stellar Management summit in Reykjavik. He <a href="http://keithneilson.co.uk">writes regularly about </a></em><a href="http://keithneilson.co.uk">EVE Online</a><em> and has been playing the game since early 2004.</em><br />
<br />
<span style="float: right; margin-left: 10px; margin-top: 6px;"><a href="http://twitter.com/share" data-via="massively" data-count="vertical" class="twitter-share-button">Tweet</a> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js"></script> </span>It is undeniable that <a href="http://play.eveonline.com/"><em>EVE Online</em></a> is unique among MMORPGs in many ways. One of these is its <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/CouncilofStellarManagement/">Council of Stellar Management</a>, an elected committee of nine players who play an active role in the development of the game, bringing player concerns and proposals for the future direction of the game directly to <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/ccp">CCP</a> at biannual summits in Iceland. Until this year, the perception of the CSM among players was that the Council is a marketing tool that does not fulfill its stated role of representing the playerbase. But in June, all of that changed.<br />
<br />
This term of the CSM brought in some major changes to the way the Council is organised, specifically with the removal of term limits (previously delegates could only serve two terms on the CSM) and the extension of terms from six months to a year. In addition to this, the CSM has been given "stakeholder" status within CCP. This means that the Council members have an equal say in the planning of future development along with the internal teams at CCP. This has allowed the fifth CSM to have a significant influence on the future development of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/EVE-Online/">EVE</a></em>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/12/eve-onlines-csm-from-june-to-december/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>An inside look at EVE Online's CSM: From June to December</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/12/eve-onlines-csm-from-june-to-december/">An inside look at EVE Online's CSM: From June to December</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 12 Jan 2011 18:00:00 EST. The roster of candidates for the 4th <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/What_is_the_CSM">Council of Stellar Management</a> (CSM) in <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> has been announced. According to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> developer P&eacute;tur J&oacute;hannes &Oacute;skarsson (aka <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-xhagen">CCP Xhagen</a>), 60 members of the playerbase submitted applications, with 49 players accepted after CCP's screening process. (Players must hold valid passports to attend the CSM summit in Reykjavik, and those with EULA violations are ineligible to run.) From this pool of 49, there will ultimately be nine elected delegates and five alternates who can step in when needed. <br />
<br />
Although Xhagen didn't break down candidate stats by nationality, there is a substantial number of U.S. players running for the 4th CSM as in past elections. This time around there are candidates from Latvia, Serbia, and Barbados as well. The ages of candidates range from 21 to 54, and only one female candidate is in the running this term which Xhagen notes is a decrease from the previous election. (He also indicates that only 3.9% of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a>'s subscribers are female.)<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/31/eve-onlines-candidates-for-4th-council-of-stellar-management-an/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Online's candidates for 4th Council of Stellar Management announced</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/31/eve-onlines-candidates-for-4th-council-of-stellar-management-an/">EVE Online's candidates for 4th Council of Stellar Management announced</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 31 Oct 2009 16:00:00 EST. Of course there's <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNhPig8inEY">the main keynote</a> that included <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514"><em>DUST 514</em></a> info and gameplay footage, but the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFEi2aIvsFA">CCP Panel</a> gave players in attendance the opportunity to ask the <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> developers whatever they felt like. <br /><br />The responses from the devs explain quite a bit about the choices <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a> has made with both <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> and <em>DUST 514</em>, and there are some hints of what's to come. More than anything, it's interesting to see this kind of direct interaction between the players and the people who create the game. <em>(Obligatory disclaimer: The CCP Panel video is a bit NSFW with the language in parts, but if you're watching something like this on the job... you probably don't care.)</em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/08/eve-fanfest-2009-videos-are-up/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Fanfest 2009 videos are up</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/08/eve-fanfest-2009-videos-are-up/">EVE Fanfest 2009 videos are up</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 08 Oct 2009 19:00:00 EST. This year's Alliance PvP Tournament will mark the seventh annual event. <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a> likes to get the players involved in ways beyond being tournament competitors, which is good news for the gamers themselves. Rather than having the developers comment with the play-by-play action, we've mentioned that CCP put out a call to the players, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/30/ccp-games-seeking-players-to-commentate-eve-online-alliance-pvp/">seeking PvP experts to be commentators</a>. The final choices have been made and CCP announced the names of this year's Alliance Tournament commentators today, and it's clearly an accomplished roster of players. <br /><br />Crovan (Dark-Rising), of <a href="http://www.virginworlds.com/podcast.php?show=17">The Drone Bay podcast</a> fame, will be back again this year. As will Kil2 (coracao ardente), who did a great job last year, and who many players will know from <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&amp;threadID=1065858">the PvP videos he's released</a>. Verone, arguably <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/04/outlaws-of-eve-online-verone/"><em>EVE</em>'s most well-known pirate</a>, will apparently be enjoying the tournament as a viewer rather than commentator this year, but his <a href="http://www.veto-corp.com/">Veto</a> corpmate Ryas Nia will be on hand at Alliance Tournament VII. Ryas will be joined by two new commentators this year: TeaDaze from <a href="http://www.agony-unleashed.com/news.php">Agony Unleashed</a> (a PvP training school in <em>EVE</em>) and Trzzbk from <a href="http://wiki.goonfleet.com/index.php?title=Main_Page">GoonFleet</a>. <br /><br />This looks like a great lineup of players chosen to speak during the matches. <em>EVE</em> Alliance Tournament VII will begin in early September, and will run for three weekends, culminating in the live video broadcast of the finals from Reykjavik.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/24/ccp-games-selects-player-commentators-for-eve-alliance-tour/">CCP Games selects player commentators for EVE Alliance Tournament VII</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 24 Jun 2009 18:00:00 EST. CCP Games' <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/events/alliances/tournament/t7/">new Alliance Tournament page</a> explains what the event is all about: "<em>The EVE Online Alliance Tournament is the ultimate battlefield in which the top pilots in EVE Online fight for the glory and honour of their alliance. 64 Alliances compete over 3 weekends of intense, explosive action, with the final weekend broadcast live via EVE TV." </em><br /><br />Last year's was tournament was a big success, with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/31/massively-interviews-crovan-about-eve-alliance-pvp-tournament-vi/">some excellent commentary on the matches</a> from members of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> playerbase and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/01/eve-pvp-tournament-assassination-machiavellian-or-bad-form/">no small amount of drama</a>. Given how well things worked out last year, the 2009 Alliance Tournament will follow the same format, but there are a few changes that <em>EVE</em> developer CCP Claw discusses in his dev blog "<a href="http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=667">How do you stop a man with seven alliance tournaments?</a>"<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/12/eve-alliance-pvp-tournament-vii-details-and-changes-announced/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Alliance PvP Tournament VII details and changes announced</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/12/eve-alliance-pvp-tournament-vii-details-and-changes-announced/">EVE Alliance PvP Tournament VII details and changes announced</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 12 Jun 2009 20:00:00 EST. The event runs from August 17 through the 19th at the Cologne Congress Center East. Hilmar's keynote will focus on how <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> rose from being a small Reykjavik-based studio with an obscure niche title to becoming a success story in the MMO industry with the growing popularity of <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>, now running studios in Atlanta and Shanghai, as well as their hometown of Reykjavik. <br /><br />Perhaps the biggest news here is the reveal hinted at in the <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/pressreleases/default.asp?pressReleaseID=58">CCP Games press release</a>: "<em>As a testament to the industry's potential for growth despite widespread economic turmoil and as an inspiration for up-and-coming independent studios, P&eacute;tursson will give an exclusive first look at the company's latest project, which is currently in pre-production." </em>We can only <em>assume</em> this is the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-darkness"><em>World of Darkness</em></a> MMO, but it could very well be a closer look at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/walking-in-stations"><em>Walking in Stations</em></a> or <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/08/eve-online-moving-to-the-world-of-first-person-shooters/">any of the other projects CCP announced</a> at last year's Fanfest. Last year's tournament was <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/01/eve-pvp-tournament-assassination-machiavellian-or-bad-form/">very entertaining</a>, both in terms of the matches themselves and the commentary from PvP experts selected from the playerbase, namely <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/31/massively-interviews-crovan-about-eve-alliance-pvp-tournament-vi/">Crovan</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/04/outlaws-of-eve-online-verone/">Verone</a>. <br /><br />This year's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> Alliance Tournament VII will kick off in September. We don't have any further details on it yet, except that it will follow the same format that CCP used last year -- two weekends of qualifiers and a third weekend for the finals. Last year's finals were broadcast in live video, which is something that <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a> wants to do again this in Alliance Tournament VII. In fact, they're now seeking PvP experts from among the <em>EVE</em> playerbase since it's worked out so well in the past. The requirements? <em>EVE</em> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-charlie">video producer CCP Charlie writes</a>, <em>"As an Expert you'll be on the set discussing the tournament, tactics, teams and talking with developers about EVE live on air. You'll also take shifts in the commentary booth providing live commentary on the matches themselves. You need to know your PvP and you need to know how to keep on talking!"</em> The first two weeks' commentary will be done from those players' homes (via EVE Voice and internet radio stations), but CCP Games will fly the Experts out to Reykjavik, Iceland for the final rounds, covering both the airfare and accommodation. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-alliance-tournament-vi/">EVE Alliance Tournament VI</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-alliance-tournament-vi/#1327420"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/01/absolution_thumbnail.png" alt="Absolution" title="Absolution" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-alliance-tournament-vi/#1327421"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/01/d1m1-2_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-alliance-tournament-vi/#1327422"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/01/d1m2-1_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-alliance-tournament-vi/#1327424"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/01/d1m3-1_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-alliance-tournament-vi/#1327427"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/01/d1m3-3_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/30/ccp-games-seeking-players-to-commentate-eve-online-alliance-pvp/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CCP Games seeking players to commentate EVE Online Alliance PvP Tournament VII</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/30/ccp-games-seeking-players-to-commentate-eve-online-alliance-pvp/">CCP Games seeking players to commentate EVE Online Alliance PvP Tournament VII</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 30 May 2009 10:00:00 EST. To make things easier, CCP has <a href="http://fanfest.eveonline.com/">launched a Fanfest site</a> that's a one-stop destination for all news and information surrounding the capsuleer pilgrimage to '<a href="http://fanfest.eveonline.com/party-at-the-top-of-the-world.html">the top of the world</a>.' Of course they've announced that <a href="http://fanfest.eveonline.com/pvp.html">there will be a PvP tournament</a> taking place during Fanfest as well, which should come as no surprise to past attendees. Plus they've put together a <a href="http://fanfest.eveonline.com/survival-guide.html">Reykjav&icirc;k survival guide</a> that highlights the city's dining options and nightlife. <br /><br />EVE Fanfest 2009 will last from October 1-3, and as always CCP Games has worked out <a href="http://fanfest.eveonline.com/hotel-and-travel.html">package deals for attendees</a> with Icelandair that also include accommodation. A notable change this year is that <em>EVE</em> fans can purchase their Fanfest passes using PLEX, which is CCP's method of <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/30_days_Concord_Pilot_License_Extension">converting real world cash into an in-game item</a>, sold in-game for ISK and redeemable for buyers as actual playtime. They give more detail on their new <a href="http://fanfest.eveonline.com/plex-for-passes.html">PLEX for Passes</a> program: <em>"In honor of our recent 6th anniversary, we decided to allow people to use PLEX to pay for their tickets to Fanfest, gathering as many players as possible. For the first time ever you can buy your Fanfest 2009 tickets with in-game Pilot License Extensions (PLEX). Using PLEX, attendees can attend Fanfest simply by playing EVE!"</em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/20/ccp-games-launches-new-eve-fanfest-2009-site/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CCP Games launches new EVE Fanfest 2009 site</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/20/ccp-games-launches-new-eve-fanfest-2009-site/">CCP Games launches new EVE Fanfest 2009 site</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 20 May 2009 19:00:00 EST. It's held annually in Reykjavik, Iceland, the home of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a>, and is a major event for die-hard fans of the game. <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> dev CCP Tyr announced the sixth annual 'Party at the Top of the World' this week: <em>"It is time once again to start marking your calendars and making your reservations for the 2009 Fanfest in Reykjavik, Iceland! Get ready for another weekend of PvP tournaments, hanging out with the developers, and partying in a sea of fellow EVE Online fans. As always, Fanfest attendees will be treated to videos and announcements on the future of EVE and what players can expect in the upcoming expansions." <br /></em><br />Rather than holding it in November <a href="http://www.crazykinux.com/2009/03/ccp-pulls-fast-one-on-us-with-fanfest.html">as in all previous years</a>, they've moved up this year's Fanfest dates to October 1- 3, when the weather should hopefully be a bit warmer. CCP Games has worked with Icelandair to put together airfare and hotel travel packages by country, the details of which can be found on the <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=648">EVE Fanfest 2009 announcement page</a>. The CSM is a council of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/council-of-stellar-management">representatives of the playerbase</a>, elected by the players themselves, who work with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> to ensure that the development pipeline reflects the interests of the subscribers. <br /><br />Being a CSM delegate can be both time-consuming and stressful, as past and present reps <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/13/eve-community-spotlight-jade-constantine/">Jade Constantine</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/03/eve-community-spotlight-lavista-vista/">LaVista Vista</a> have told us. Still, it offers players a chance at helping to shape the game they love, something which few other MMO developers would ever allow. Already on the CSM's radar for the next group of delegates is reworking (lawless) 0.0 space and its entrenched system of sovereignty, which is no small task.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/16/call-for-candidates-in-eve-onlines-player-elected-council-of-st/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Call for candidates in EVE Online's player-elected Council of Stellar Management</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/16/call-for-candidates-in-eve-onlines-player-elected-council-of-st/">Call for candidates in EVE Online's player-elected Council of Stellar Management</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 16 Mar 2009 09:00:00 EST. How does it impact your ability to assess the state of <em>EVE</em>'s economy, and are there assumptions you've made in the past that you need to reassess now?</strong><br /><br />It's a good thing that you mentioned the starbase exploit because <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/10/ccp-games-releases-findings-on-eve-starbase-exploit-investigatio/">we are in the final stages of creating a very thorough dev blog on that</a>, which will hopefully be published very soon. [Note: this interview was conducted just prior to the release of the investigation's findings.]<br /><br />There are certain things with the POS exploit that made it very difficult to detect. You basically needed to be able to go to that particular starbase and look at it, look at the setup and so on. It was difficult for us to detect it otherwise, except from the code once we knew what we were looking for.<br /><br />From a market perspective the <em>EVE</em> economy has become so big that in order for you to impact the market you will really have to have large quantities. And as will be shown in this dev blog that will be published, the scale of the exploit really didn't start until late 2008... <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/15/ccp-games-on-the-extent-and-impact-of-eves-starbase-exploit/">to the large industrial scale so that it started to impact the market</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/19/massively-interviews-eves-lead-economist-part-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively interviews EVE's Lead Economist part 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/19/massively-interviews-eves-lead-economist-part-2/">Massively interviews EVE's Lead Economist part 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 19 Feb 2009 12:00:00 EST. One major aspect of the game is that its <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/eve-visual-guide-the-birth-of-new-eden/">far future setting of New Eden</a> functions as one server, where players can build up empires -- or topple those of their rivals -- across more than 5000 solar systems. Beyond its scale, what distinguishes <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> from other games is that it has a player-driven virtual economy, the backbone of the game. <em>EVE</em>'s economy has been a major draw for players interested in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/crafting">market and crafting sophistication</a> generally unseen in an online game. <br /><br /><em>EVE</em>'s creators, <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a>, have fostered a setting where players can do what they want in the 'sandbox', a setting where the tools are in place for players to use as they see fit. Nearly every ship, module, and item used by a player in the game was produced by another player in New Eden at some point. Fight for military dominance and control vast regions of space, or corner the market as part of an industrial conglomerate -- it's all possible in <em>EVE</em>. In fact, the game's warfare and industry are very much intertwined, making <em>EVE</em>'s virtual economy a dynamic one. Monitoring and researching this economy is important to CCP Games, and to further that goal, they've hired real world economist Dr. Eyj&oacute;lfur Gu&eth;mundsson (aka CCP EyjoG). <br /><br />Massively recently caught up with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eyjolfur-gudmundsson/">Dr. EyjoG</a>, who told us about his rather unique position at CCP Games, and what he's learned about virtual economies along the way.<br /><strong></strong><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/19/massively-interviews-eve-online-lead-economist-dr-eyjog/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively interviews EVE Online Lead Economist Dr. EyjoG</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/19/massively-interviews-eve-online-lead-economist-dr-eyjog/">Massively interviews EVE Online Lead Economist Dr. EyjoG</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 19 Feb 2009 12:00:00 EST. CCP's Lead Economist Dr. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eyjolfur-gudmundsson">Eyj&oacute;lfur Gu&eth;mundsson</a> and Researcher <a href="https://www.cmpevents.com/GD09/a.asp?option=G&amp;V=3&amp;id=610144">Petur Johannes Oskarsson</a> will speak about player governance in the virtual space, as exemplified by <em>EVE Online</em>'s "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/council-of-stellar-management">Council of Stellar Management</a>" (CSM). <br /><br />For those who haven't heard of it, the Council of Stellar Management is something unique to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a>. It exists to convey the sentiments of the playerbase to <em>EVE'</em>s developer, <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a>. The idea is that it will ensure that CCP Games is developing and balancing the game in ways that fit the interests of the subscribers. It also allows for concerns between the players and developers to be addressed in a direct way by CCP Games.<br /><br />CSM representatives are not selected by the developers, who largely maintain a hands-off stance on how the CSM is run. The players themselves organize their own election campaigns and the playerbase votes for who the best women and men are for the role. Each CSM term lasts for six months, during which time regular meetings take place, one of which happens in Reykjavik, in 3-days (or more) of face-to-face sessions with CCP Games. <br /><br />The <a href="http://www.gdconf.com/">GDC 09</a> session is titled: "<a href="https://www.cmpevents.com/GD09/a.asp?option=C&amp;V=11&amp;SessID=9311">The Council of Stellar Management: EVE Online Bridges Worlds for a Society</a>".<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/13/eves-council-of-stellar-management-to-be-discussed-at-gdc-09/">EVE's Council of Stellar Management to be discussed at GDC 09</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 13 Feb 2009 18:00:00 EST. Those alliances vie for control of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/new-eden">New Eden galaxy</a>, sparking continual warfare and political upheaval among the thousands of pilots flying in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> at any given time. That's really the beauty of the game: the developers provide the setting, but it's the players who make it what it is. Alliance struggles are one of the defining features of the game, but not all scores are settled through massive fleet engagements. Some alliances opt to engage one another in an arena -- viewed by thousands of <em>EVE</em>'s pilots -- the <a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/events/alliances/tournament/?t=6">Alliance PvP Tournament</a>. <br /><br />Alliance Tournament VI <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/24/eve-online-alliance-pvp-tournament-vi-begins-today/">kicked off last weekend</a>, continues this weekend with qualifying rounds, and will culminate in final rounds in February, which will be streamed as live video. As the Tournament is so significant to the players, each year <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> invites PvP experts from among the playerbase to be the tournament's commentators. Among those veteran combat pilots in <em>EVE Online</em>, <a href="http://bitteroldnoob.blogspot.com/">Crovan</a> certainly stands out. He, along with a small team of other PvP experts, was selected to provide live commentary on the matches. This should come as no problem for him, given the PvP experience gained from his time with <a href="http://eve-history.net/wiki/index.php/Mercenary_Coalition">now-legendary Mercenary Coalition</a> and being a familiar voice to many of us with <a href="http://www.virginworlds.com/podcast.php?show=17&amp;ep=20 ">The Drone Bay podcast</a>. <br /><br />Since The Drone Bay is the official podcast of the tournament, Crovan is recognizable to many listeners as the voice of the <em>EVE Online</em> Alliance Tournament VI. The fact that he's been a past Alliance Tournament competitor also gives him some additional perspective on the event. It's been a while since we spoke with Crovan -- we were fortunate enough to have him with us at Massively in the past through his excellent <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/rogue-signal/">Rogue Signal column</a>. We caught up with Crovan this week, however, and he told us everything we wanted to know about the Alliance Tournament. <strong><br /></strong><strong></strong><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-alliance-tournament-vi/">EVE Alliance Tournament VI</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-alliance-tournament-vi/#1327420"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/01/absolution_thumbnail.png" alt="Absolution" title="Absolution" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-alliance-tournament-vi/#1327421"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/01/d1m1-2_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-alliance-tournament-vi/#1327422"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/01/d1m2-1_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-alliance-tournament-vi/#1327424"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/01/d1m3-1_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-alliance-tournament-vi/#1327427"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/01/d1m3-3_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/31/massively-interviews-crovan-about-eve-alliance-pvp-tournament-vi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively interviews Crovan about EVE Alliance PvP Tournament VI</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/31/massively-interviews-crovan-about-eve-alliance-pvp-tournament-vi/">Massively interviews Crovan about EVE Alliance PvP Tournament VI</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 31 Jan 2009 16:45:00 EST. This is especially prevalent in Iceland, home of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> -- the developers of the sci-fi massively multiplayer online game <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>. The collapse of Iceland's banking system and currency has been devastating to the nation. <em>"Icelanders are reeling from the shock of having everything they knew virtually disappear overnight,"</em> Valur Gunnarsson reports from Reykjavik for <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk">The Guardian</a>.<br /><br />Despite these economic woes, Hilmar V. P&eacute;tursson, the CEO of <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a>, gave assurances <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/16/ceo-of-ccp-games-addresses-eves-continuity-through-turbulent-ti/">all is well with the company</a> back in October. He's stated that CCP is "well isolated" from the banking crisis, that their holdings and assets were diversified enough (due to partner relationships in different parts of the world) to stave off the ruin that many other Icelandic companies are facing. But there's a potential downside to that diversification: restrictions on access to foreign currencies have gone into effect in Iceland. Specifically -- as it relates to CCP Games -- on foreign investment coming into the country. Are these restrictions enough of a hassle that CCP Games would ever need to leave Iceland?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/22/economic-crisis-may-force-ccp-games-to-leave-iceland/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Economic crisis may force CCP Games to leave Iceland</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/22/economic-crisis-may-force-ccp-games-to-leave-iceland/">Economic crisis may force CCP Games to leave Iceland</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 22 Dec 2008 19:00:00 EST. The news imparted at that time did not bode well for the future of the alliance tournaments, given the expense and level of involvement on the part of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> staff to run it. For gamers who are already <em>EVE</em> players, the video is a look inside the <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a> office in Reykjavik, and features interviews with several developers in addition to some nice visuals of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/23/eve-onlines-rumored-orca-ship-unveiled/">the new sub-capital industrial ship</a> arriving with this expansion, the Orca. This video should really be seen in high resolution to appreciate the details, and can be downloaded from the <a href="http://www.eve-online.com/news/downtimenews.asp ">temporary 'downtime news' <em>EVE</em> site</a> which is up during the expansion deployment. In terms of when <em>Quantum Rise</em> is expected to be ready and the servers open up for players, the latest update from CCP is that they're currently on schedule, with the servers to open on November 12th at 02:00 GMT. In the meantime, we've got the 'EVE Online: Behind the Scenes' video embedded for you below the cut.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/11/behind-the-scenes-video-of-eve-online-expansion-quantum-rise/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Behind-the-scenes video of EVE Online expansion Quantum Rise</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/11/behind-the-scenes-video-of-eve-online-expansion-quantum-rise/">Behind-the-scenes video of EVE Online expansion Quantum Rise</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 11 Nov 2008 18:00:00 EST. Rather, the EVE TV team is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/29/eve-tv-returns-to-fanfest-seeking-interviews-with-players/">recording the events and interviewing players</a>, with the aim to make the video footage available to everyone after Fanfest. While some players felt that the graphics as they were prior to Trinity were still ahead of the curve in terms of what's expected of an MMO, the look of the game changed dramatically with Trinity. However, the Trinity deployment wasn't a complete revamp of <em>EVE's</em> look. Ships and stations benefited from Premium graphics, but other celestial objects did not, jump gates notwithstanding.<br /><br /><em>"EVE is in a state where, if you run the Premium graphics edition, half of it is done, you could say,"</em> said Chief Technologist Halldor Fannar of <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a>, at Reykjavik's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eve-fanfest-2008">Fanfest 2008</a>, as reported by Oli Welsh of <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net">Eurogamer</a>. Future graphics updates will bring celestial objects in line with what's currently seen in Trinity, and may well arrive with the forthcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/walking-in-stations"><em>Walking in Stations</em></a> expansion which is slated to launch after the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/quantum-rise"><em>Quantum Rise</em></a> expansion, just around the corner.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/06/eve-fanfest-presentation-discusses-graphics-enhancements/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Fanfest presentation discusses graphics enhancements</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/06/eve-fanfest-presentation-discusses-graphics-enhancements/">EVE Fanfest presentation discusses graphics enhancements</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 06 Nov 2008 19:00:00 EST. While an economic downturn isn't something to be taken lightly, it is unique in comparison with similar problems in the past -- now real world economic issues can <em>potentially</em> ripple into virtual economies, just as they <em>certainly</em> impact the companies who create MMOs and virtual worlds. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/ccp-games">CCP Games,</a> founded in Reykjavik, Iceland, is a case-in-point. <br /><br />There has been <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/15/real-world-economic-impact-on-mmos-and-virtual-worlds/">commentary and speculation</a> among <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online's</em></a> playerbase and in the media about how Iceland's economic woes may impact the game. That's the gist of a question posed by CBBC, a longtime commentator at the <a href="http://terranova.blogs.com/terra_nova/">Terra Nova blog,</a> but specifically he asks: <em>"What now for virtual economies? What happens to <a href="http://www.eve-online.com">EVE</a> now that Iceland's economy is collapsing?... Will my <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com">WoW</a> gold be worth more or less? Will games go under taking their value with them? Will we see a run on games the same as a run on banks?" </em><br /><br />While his questions aren't focused solely on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online,</em></a> and are more of a general inquiry, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP's</a> title is not surprisingly the main example cited by both the CBBC and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/terra-nova">Terra Nova's</a> readers. As expected, the responses to the question are intelligent and shed some more light on how real world economics might affect MMO economies, namely that of <em>EVE Online.</em> Some speculate that real world issues will result in increased escapism, imbuing virtual worlds and their economies with greater significance. Others related financial scenarios that affect <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a> and its virtual economics. If you're interested in the economies of MMOs and virtual worlds, you might want to get involved in the discussion of <a href="http://terranova.blogs.com/terra_nova/2008/10/whither-mmo-eco.html#more">"Whither MMO economies?"</a> over at Terra Nova.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/15/real-world-economic-impact-on-mmos-and-virtual-worlds/">Real world economic impact on MMOs and virtual worlds? </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 15 Oct 2008 18:00:00 EST. The end result promises to be wonderfully chaotic and offers something interesting for players of all types, whether hardcore PvP-er or carebear. In fact, this also creates the new possibility of having industry-focused players giving tournament commentary alongside the PvP veterans, but there's been no word on this to date. <br /><br />While <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE's</em></a> PvP tournament viewers at <a href="http://www.eve-online.com/fanfest/2008/">Fanfest 2008 </a>can look forward to the pandemonium of coordinating mining lasers with missile fire, it's a safe assumption that the tournament participants themselves would like to know how this is expected to go down. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> now has a video explaining how the tournament will work, and has posted two charts showing the brackets of the <a href="http://www.eve-online.com/fanfest/2008/brackets.asp"><em>EVE</em> Fanfest 2008 PvP Tournament schedule.</a> In fact, devs CCP Mindstar and CCP Claw were filmed randomly drawing teams from a 'hat' and matching them up, which was later solidified into the schedule.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/07/eve-fanfest-2008-pvp-tournament-details-announced-in-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Fanfest 2008 PvP Tournament details announced in video</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/07/eve-fanfest-2008-pvp-tournament-details-announced-in-video/">EVE Fanfest 2008 PvP Tournament details announced in video</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 07 Oct 2008 18:30:00 EST. In <a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=583">"A Tale of Two Cities,"</a> CCP Atlas makes an analogy between the conveniences of city life and the similar situation of pilots seeking convenience in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><span style="font-style: italic;">EVE,</span></a> often needing to cross through the busy system to reach a destination. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP's</a> solution is to decentralize Jita from routes between solar systems. In effect, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/22/eve-online-implements-temporary-population-control-measures/">limiting the non-commerce presence</a> in the Jita system, so it can -- hopefully -- continue in its established role as a market hub in New Eden without being a detriment to the players in terms of lag. <br /><br />Once the changes go into effect, players will no longer need to navigate through Jita to reach their destination (namely the Ruomo constellation), nor run agent missions in Jita. That is to say, Jita, as previously announced, will be <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/17/even-npc-agents-are-running-from-jitas-lag-in-eve/">a dead zone for mission agents;</a> mission runners given missions from agents outside of Jita will not be sent into or through Jita as part of their mission completion.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/25/ccp-dev-blog-addresses-lag-issues-new-features/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CCP dev blog addresses lag issues, new features</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/25/ccp-dev-blog-addresses-lag-issues-new-features/">CCP dev blog addresses lag issues, new features</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 25 Sep 2008 09:00:00 EST. Their official site <a href="http://www.childsplaycharity.org/">paints an encouraging picture</a> of the kind of positive change they're effecting in the lives of children, and how you -- as gamers -- can get involved. <br /><br />The other half of the success story of Child's Play is the involvement of the game companies, themselves. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games,</a> the creators of sci-fi MMO <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online,</em></a> is continuing its <a href="http://www.eve-online.com/news/newsOfEve.asp?newsID=478">past support</a> of Child's Play in conjunction with <em>EVE</em> Fanfest 2008. The main item to bid on is a private tour of <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP's</a> Reykjavik HQ, where the highest Child's Play bidder will get to see how the game is run, and will get to meet the staff that keeps New Eden alive. See <a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/news.asp?a=single&amp;nid=2380&amp;tid=1&amp;sid=150969230 ">CCP's announcement</a> and the <a href="http://www.eve-online.com/fanfest/2008/silentauction.asp">2008 silent auction page</a> for the full details about how you can get the guided tour while benefitting sick children. It's a win-win situation for any <em>EVE</em> fan with deep pockets. Bidding in the CCP-Child's Play silent auction starts at $1000 (USD), with bidding already open as of today. Bidding ends October 22, and of course multiple (increasing) bids are possible and encouraged. The tour itself will be given to the highest bidder on November 5th, in advance of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/fanfest"><em>EVE</em> Fanfest 2008.</a> However, the charity auction isn't limited to the Reykjavik HQ tour. Additional items will be auctioned off for Child's Play during Fanfest, and will be given to the highest contributors on the spot.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/24/ccp-games-supports-childs-play-offers-tour-of-hq/">CCP Games supports Child's Play, offers tour of HQ</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 24 Sep 2008 19:00:00 EST. The implementation of these new objectives was briefly outlined by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> in July, but they've now <a href="http://www.eve-online.com/fanfest/2008/pvprules.asp ">clarified the rules and systems to be used;</a> a video they've put up on the official <em>EVE</em> site does a good job of explaining how it's all going to work. <br /><br />Basically, all tournament participants will receive 'super characters' with all skills maxed at level 5. Both sides will have a <a href="http://www.eve-wiki.net/index.php?title=Rorqual">Rorqual capital mining ship</a> -- the space between those is considered to be the arena, where combat can occur. Both sides attempt to collect as much ore as possible within 15 minutes, as the video explains: <em>"Any methods within the rules can be used to accomplish this and stop your opponents from doing the same. Mining ore yourself, killing enemy miners and looting their wrecks, stealing from enemy jetcans or just outright destroying the opposing team are all within the rules."</em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/30/eve-fanfest-pvp-tournament-rules-announced-with-video-demo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Fanfest PvP Tournament rules announced with video demo</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/30/eve-fanfest-pvp-tournament-rules-announced-with-video-demo/">EVE Fanfest PvP Tournament rules announced with video demo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 30 Aug 2008 15:00:00 EST. As you'd expect, the PvP Tournament has always been purely about annihilating the opposing side or conversely losing horribly in front of a live audience of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><span style="font-style: italic;">EVE </span></a>fans. The 2008 PvP tournament, however, will be a little... <span style="font-style: italic;">different.</span> <br /><br />CCP Claw has <a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=576">dubbed this year's tournament</a> "The Super Ultimate <em>EVE</em> Online Mining Tournament of Awesomeness." Why, that name just rolls off your tongue. But the changes coming to the tournament aren't limited to an unwieldy name; players will need to mine for ore while under heavy fire from the opposing team. <span style="font-style: italic;">"Any method within the rules can be used to accomplish this and stop your opponent from doing the same. Mining ore for yourself, killing enemy miners and looting their wrecks, stealing from enemy jetcans, or just outright destroying the opposing team are all within the rules,"</span> CCP Claw states.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/31/eve-fanfest-2008-pvp-tournament-to-be-unconventional/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Fanfest 2008 PvP Tournament to be unconventional</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/31/eve-fanfest-2008-pvp-tournament-to-be-unconventional/">EVE Fanfest 2008 PvP Tournament to be unconventional</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 31 Jul 2008 17:00:00 EST. The piece touches on the views of <a href="http://www.goonswarm.com/">Goonswarm</a> alliance leader and <a href="http://www.eve-csm.com">CSM delegate</a> Sean Conover (aka Darius Johnson, CEO of Goonfleet) and the real-world CEO of <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games,</a> Hilmar Veigar Petursson. The <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com/company/management.asp">Icelandic CEO</a> states: <span style="font-style: italic;">"There isn't a lot of difference between what you can apply within the game and out of it... It's more about social skills than gaming skills. It's very hard to stay on top." </span><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/22/leadership-in-eve-online-applicable-to-real-world-ventures/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Leadership in EVE Online applicable to real-world ventures</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/22/leadership-in-eve-online-applicable-to-real-world-ventures/">Leadership in EVE Online applicable to real-world ventures</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 22 Jul 2008 20:00:00 EST.
