We're only a few days away from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/halloween/">Halloween</a>, and already the Massively office staff is dressing up in anticipation. Shawn's post-apocalyptic gear is at odds with Rubi's tastefully modest <a href="http://www.guildwars.com/"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> Elementalist outfit. Greg's Squig is in the corner battling it out with Larry's Chewbacca. Bree is dudded up as a giant red corrective marker; Jef's free-to-play outfit requires microtransactions to view in full; and Kyrstalle is photographing it all with her Poloroid <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/one-shots/">One-Shot</a> camera. I think Eliot showed up in full plate armor and riding a mechanical bull, but that just may be his normal work attire.<br />
<br />
So as everyone else is goofing off in the spirit of the holidays, it remains to me, your lovable intern, to hack out a top 10 list in honor of All Hallow's Eve. It's the least I can do since they're paying me in candy.<br />
<br />
While every MMO incorporates horror at some point (even, yes, <a href="http://www.hellokittyonline.com/"><em>Hello Kitty Online's</em></a> Cat-Tastrophie zone), and it's nearly impossible to escape a clutch of giant spiders in any game you visit, I've picked out 10 MMOs that best deliver a slice of October 31st. Some are old, some new, some canceled and some yet to come, but these are 10 of the spookiest MMOs in the world.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/28/the-perfect-ten-halloween-mmos/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Perfect Ten: Halloween MMOs</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/28/the-perfect-ten-halloween-mmos/">The Perfect Ten: Halloween MMOs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 28 Oct 2010 12:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.playrequiem.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">Requiem</span></a>, the free-to-play MMO that insists on making sure that all living creatures squirt out 20 gallons of blood upon their deaths, has recently updated the game with a new expansion -- <a href="http://www.playrequiem.com/news/news.aspx"><span style="font-style: italic;">Memento Mori</span></a>.<br /><br /><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memento_mori">Memento Mori</a>, the Latin phrase meaning "Remember you will die," is a great description for the expansion that focuses on integrating learned skills and DNA directly into the character as they level. Previously, players would have to visit a trainer to learn skills, or assemble DNA strands with a DNA scientist in order to equip DNA mutations. <br /><br />Now these two aspects of character development have been placed into the game <a href="http://www.playrequiem.com/news/updateDetail.aspx?Num=60">as talent-esque windows</a>, which allow you to spread your points amongst new upgrades the moment you level. It's almost like you're "remembering" your skills and DNA abilities instead of learning them. We appreciate that.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/01/requiem-updates-to-memento-mori/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Requiem updates to "Memento Mori"</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/01/requiem-updates-to-memento-mori/">Requiem updates to "Memento Mori"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 01 Oct 2009 20:00:00 EST. We haven't heard too much from the folks over at Gravity Interactive since they launched their monster-and-blood filled <a href="http://www.playrequiem.com/index.aspx"><em>Requiem: Bloodymare</em></a>. That said, it seems things are going well, as they've just wrapped up a contest to <a href="http://www.playrequiem.com/news/news.aspx?num=79#79">let players build monsters</a> even more nightmarish than this guy. Today's One Shots comes to us from sgamer, who decided to go toe to toe with this towering pile of fug in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Requiem--Bloodymare/">Requiem: Bloodymare</a></em> and writes in to tell us a bit more about it. <em>Here, I was fighting the big Ancient Ghoul outside of the Ruins of Lament. [He's] a big, fun mob to solo with my Rogue.</em> He looks pretty hungry to us. <br /><br />If you've got a picture of a game we don't often see - or perhaps yourself running around in skimpy armor like sgamer here - we want to see it! Just email it to us at <strong>oneshots AT massively DOT com</strong> along with your name, the name of the game, and a quick description. Please try to turn off or minimize UI elements, too. Yours could be next. <br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/one-shots/">One Shots</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/one-shots/#2704109"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/02/os864_eq2_1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/one-shots/#2700179"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/02/os863_fe_1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/one-shots/#2695825"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/02/os862_lotro_1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/one-shots/#2691569"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/02/os861_co_1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/one-shots/#2687909"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/02/os860_wow_1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/02/one-shots-all-we-wanna-do-is-eat-your-brains/">One Shots: All we wanna do is eat your brains</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 02 Sep 2009 14:00:00 EST. At last check we had identified and indexed well over 250 MMOs of just about every shape, size and color available for gamers from 8 to 80 - and up! Unfortunately, there just aren't enough hours in the day to cover every single game out there as in-depth as we'd like. That said, we are pretty insanely dedicated to MMOs and love to play them... So what's a blog to do? <br /><br />After kicking the idea around, we've decided to bring back <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/First-Impressions/">First Impressions</a> for those readers who want to know about more games than just the mainstream. For now, we'll give you a brief look back at some of the staff's favorite past Impressions, as a taste of the fun to come. Be sure to come back next Wednesday and join me as we start a new journey through strange and fantastic worlds of First Impressions!<br /><br />

<em>The MMO genre is more than World of Warcraft, Age of Conan, and Warhammer Online. Here's what's going on in the rest of the world.<br /><br /></em><strong><em>Mabinogi</em> welcomes Generation 3</strong><em><br /></em>The MMO that bills itself as "your fantasy life" has gotten its next upgrade with Generation 3. Now <em><a href="http://mabinogi.nexon.net/Intro/">Mabinogi</a></em> players will have the ability to marry each other, complete with license and wedding attire for both genders. An overarching quest will require warriors to recover dungeon seals to prevent the Fomor from entering the world. And finally, the pet system gets an overhaul, with new interactions, behaviors, and controls. Our MMOs are filled with all sorts of emotions -- the excitement of getting to the next level, the surprise of the item you desperately wanted dropping off of a boss, the intense rush of a player vs. player encounter, and the joy of exploration of these fantastic worlds.<br /><br />But there is one <a href="http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3165244">very specific genre</a> and emotion that goes regularly unnoticed in our massively multiplayer gaming experiences. The genre in question isn't anything new to our gaming culture in the slightest, but it just seems that no MMO developer can make a game centered around it.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/20/anti-aliased-scare-tactics/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Anti-Aliased: Scare tactics</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/20/anti-aliased-scare-tactics/">Anti-Aliased: Scare tactics</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 20 Aug 2008 10:00:00 EST. To get you up to speed on <em><a href="http://www.playrequiem.com/index.aspx">Requiem: Bloodymare</a></em> before its <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/10/requiem-bloodymare-launches-on-june-16th/">launch</a>, here's a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/22/a-look-at-the-turan-race-in-requiem-bloodymare/">look at another</a> of the game's races -- the massive, tank-like Bartuk. <br /><br />The Bartuk are pretty much exactly what you'd think -- wielders of two-handed weapons, incredibly strong, staunch allies, etc. Historically, these races don't typically work magic, but when they do, the Bartuk use black magic, usually fire-based spells. From the official description: "<em>Bartuks believe in family, honor and the daily spilling of their enemies' blood. If you see a Bartuk warrior on the prairie, sword in hand, his eyes targeting a monstrous shape many times his size, rejoice. You're witnessing the Great Race for whom the word "fear" has no meaning</em>."<br /><br />When the 16th hits, who will you choose to be?<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/requiem-bloodymares-bartuk-race/">Requiem: Bloodymare's Bartuk Race</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/requiem-bloodymares-bartuk-race/#852735"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/06/screencapture_2008_05_29_16_10_29_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/requiem-bloodymares-bartuk-race/#852734"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/06/screencapture_2008_05_28_19_48_34_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/requiem-bloodymares-bartuk-race/#852733"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/06/screencapture_2008_05_28_19_44_25_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/requiem-bloodymares-bartuk-race/#852732"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/06/screencapture_2008_05_28_19_23_00_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/requiem-bloodymares-bartuk-race/#852731"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/06/screencapture_2008_05_28_19_37_43_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><br />[Thanks, Luis!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/10/a-look-at-the-bartuk-race-in-requiem-bloodymare/">A look at the Bartuk race in Requiem: Bloodymare</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 10 Jun 2008 13:00:00 EST. The Temperions are the player characters of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gravity-interactive/">Gravity Interactive</a>'s <a href="http://www.playrequiem.com/">Requiem: Bloodymare</a>. They are the poor souls who are condemned to fight the horrors that their world has been invaded by. Temperions are divided into three races: the human-seeming Turan, the mesomorphic Bartuk, and the wraithlike Kruxena. If you choose to play as a Turan, you're going to enjoy the inclusive, versatile skillset of the best-balanced race in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/requiem-bloodymare">R:B</a>. From Gravity:<br /><br /><em>The Turan Race fights with honor and virtue. They rely on cunning, speed and agility to do battle with the most horrifying creatures known to man. No wonder they are the representative race of Ethergia - no other race displays such valor in the face of danger. It takes courage to be human in a world filled with monsters.</em><br /><br />Check out the latest screenshots of the Turan in action. Note: There will be blood.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/requiem-bloodymares-turan-race/">Requiem: Bloodymare's Turan race</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/requiem-bloodymares-turan-race/#819113"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/05/screencapture_2008_05_13_18_28_31_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/requiem-bloodymares-turan-race/#819112"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/05/screencapture_2008_05_13_18_51_57_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/requiem-bloodymares-turan-race/#819111"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/05/screencapture_2008_05_13_18_47_59_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/requiem-bloodymares-turan-race/#819110"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/05/screencapture_2008_05_13_18_13_58_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/requiem-bloodymares-turan-race/#819109"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/05/screencapture_2008_05_13_17_43_13_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><br />[Thanks, Luis!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/22/a-look-at-the-turan-race-in-requiem-bloodymare/">A look at the Turan race in Requiem: Bloodymare</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 22 May 2008 14:30:00 EST. The battle against the darkness of Ethergia has begun again as <a href="http://www.gravity.co.kr/eng/index.asp">Gravity</a> announces the start of the open beta for their newest title, <a href="http://www.playrequiem.com"><em>Requiem: Bloodymare</em></a>. The doors to Ethergia will open up once again starting this <a href="http://www.playrequiem.com/forum/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=2407&amp;posts=1&amp;start=1">Thursday, May 15th, at 7 PM PDT (10 PM EST)</a> and will stay open for an undisclosed amount of time.<br /><br />This phase of the beta will be open to everyone, both closed beta players and the public. All that's required is the new <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/requiem-bloodymare/"><em>Requiem</em></a> client, which can be <a href="http://www.playrequiem.com/Account/Login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fgame%2fClientDownload.aspx">downloaded from the playrequiem.com website</a>, and a Requiem account. All prior accounts will be reset, and all new characters will start off in a totally new tutorial space called Turba Island.<br /><br />This change already addresses one of the large gripes from the previous test - the lack of a decent tutorial space. It seems that Gravity has been listening to all of the feedback they've received about Requiem during the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/31/requiem-bloodymare-closed-beta-period-extended/">closed beta</a>, and are working to improve upon their game. However, only time will tell as to what else has been changed and added to by the <em>Requiem</em> team.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/13/requiem-bloodymare-slashes-its-way-to-open-beta/">Requiem: Bloodymare slashes its way to open beta</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 13 May 2008 17:30:00 EST. In these pictures you can see just a few of the shambling horrors that populate this terrifying world. <br /><br />For those who have been <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/24/gdc08-requiem-bloodymare/">following along</a>, one of these shots showcases a player during Beast Possession, and it's likely at least one of the others depicts the Nightmare mode, when the tougher monsters come out to play. Closed beta ends on the 17th of April; the final release date is still to be released. Enjoy -- once you've managed to peek through your fingers, that is.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/requiem-bloodymare-gallery/">Requiem: Bloodymare Gallery</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/requiem-bloodymare-gallery/#748051"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/04/requiem-2008-02-06-18-47-54-97.avi_000004600_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Whip it good" title="Whip it good" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/requiem-bloodymare-gallery/#748050"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/04/requiem-2008-03-07-13-13-52-31.avi_000038466_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Beaver Cleaver, is that you?" title="Beaver Cleaver, is that you?" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/requiem-bloodymare-gallery/#748049"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/04/requiem-2008-02-06-17-40-58-49.avi_000008533_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Feed me, Seymour!" title="Feed me, Seymour!" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/requiem-bloodymare-gallery/#748048"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/04/requiem-2008-03-06-22-16-52-32.avi_000020333_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Hold me closer, tiny dancer" title="Hold me closer, tiny dancer" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/requiem-bloodymare-gallery/#748047"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/04/requiem-2008-02-06-18-47-54-97.avi_000014166_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Unconcerned" title="Unconcerned" /></a></div><br /><br />[Thanks, Luis!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/13/new-screens-from-the-requiem-bloodymare-closed-beta/">New screens from the Requiem: Bloodymare closed beta</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 13 Apr 2008 09:00:00 EST. I don't mind a little chicanery from time to time, especially if the payoff is an earlier-than-expected gift. Regardless, to play this title you'll need to obtain an access code, which you'll be able to get in the following ways:<br /><br />Registered users of FilePlanet have access to a limited number of beta codes as of Tuesday, and what's more, these users can access the closed beta immediately, days ahead of schedule. The day of closed beta launch, both MMORPG.com and MMOSITE.com will have codes available. Wednesday, March 26th at 10 AM PST marks the end of the closed beta. FilePlanet users, time to see if there's anything left.<br /><br />[Thanks, Colin!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/27/requiem-bloodymare-closed-beta-officially-begins-february-29th/">Requiem: Bloodymare closed beta officially begins February 29th</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 27 Feb 2008 01:00:00 EST. Already playing in Korea, <em>R:B</em> will enter closed beta in about a month's time.<br /><br />Expecting a simplified hack 'n' slash with overdone Gothic elements, <span style="font-style: italic;">R:B</span> surprised us with some really cool features and a deep character growth system. At the time, we had no idea how you'd pull off <a href="http://www.worldsinmotion.biz/2008/01/gravity_gets_gory_with_new_hor.php">a gory, horror-based MMO</a>, but <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/06/gory-mmo-coming-to-the-states-in-early-08/">thanks to Joystiq</a>'s YouTube-searching abilities (these videos were all posted back in November-- whoops), we now have video, and you can see above just how this thing might play out.<br /><br />In a few words, "just like every other MMO." Granted, this is the starting area (which explains why the mobs are just standing there being neutral), but <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y351MwrqZGA&amp;feature=related">even the trailer itself</a> doesn't promise anything super new-- the same old spells, grinding, standard MMO gamplay, and "extreme battle effects." It doesn't look bad, but it doesn't look new either, so anyone hoping to have a real horror experience in an MMO (I had my hopes up, if only for a second) will still be waiting.<br /><br />But maybe the quest text, in Korean in the video, will add that much more to the experience. Release is set for sometime this year, so we'll see.<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/09/requiem-bloodymare-footage-is-not-that-horror-ific/">Requiem Bloodymare footage is not that horror-ific</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 09 Jan 2008 17:00:00 EST. Gravity has announced that <a href="http://www.worldsinmotion.biz/2008/01/gravity_gets_gory_with_new_hor.php">they've been working hard on another title for almost four years</a> now, and it's nothing like the stylized cuteness of <em>Ragnarok</em>. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Requiem-Bloodymare/">Requiem: Bloodymare</a></em> is the name of the new game, and it sounds about as different from <em>Ragnarok</em> as night is from day. <br /><br />The game will make use of the high-tech <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/search/?q=Havok">Havok</a> engine to portray a violent dystopian future. PCs will take the part of creatures forged via magic and technology to kill demons and undead creatures loosed by years of experimentation. <br /><br />The article at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/search/?q=Worlds%20in%20Motion">Worlds in Motion</a> includes commentary from Gravity's CEO Peter Kang about the company's goals, and their deliberate decision to move away from their past work. At the moment there's no expected release date, but one would expect to hear something soon; four years is a pretty good amount of game development time.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/04/ragnarok-developer-waking-up-to-a-bloodymare/">Ragnarok developer waking up to a Bloodymare</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 04 Jan 2008 19:00:00 EST.
