Sony Online Entertainment's Recruit-a-Friend program (otherwise known as the powerlevel-your-alts-with-multiple-accounts program) has been a hit in EverQuest II for quite some time now. It's only natural that the initiative make its way to the original incarnation of Norrath, and SOE's Piestro has posted a notice on the official EverQuest boards marking just such an occasion.

Recruits and recruiters will enjoy a wealth of benefits including in-game mounts, bonus Station Cash, Legends of Norrath booster packs, a unique title, and of course, loads of bonus XP. Check out all the details on the o-boards, then hit up the official RaF page to get started.
Recruit-a-Friend program comes to EverQuest originally appeared on Massively on Sat, 02 Jul 2011 14:00:00 EST.

RIFT players, have you been trying to get your friends to come join you in Telara, but you just can't come up with the right incentive? Trion Worlds has you covered. Beginning tomorrow with the advent of patch 1.2, RIFT subscribers will be able to Ascend-a-Friend into the ranks of the Defiant or Guardians, providing the newly Ascended with a seven-day free trial as well as linking the two players' accounts together.

This account link comes with benefits for both the Ascender and the Ascendee. The former will gain in-game rewards -- an adorable Corgi-esque non-combat pet, a stylin' new hat, and a rather menacing flaming horse mount of doom -- for each recruited friend who decides to purchase RIFT. The latter will be granted an exclusive title, "The Chosen," and each player will be given the ability to teleport to the other's location once every 30 minutes.

If this sounds like just the thing you needed to get your friends to Telara without having to drag them forcibly, just log in to your Trion Worlds account and click "Ascend-a-Friend" on the left of the page to prepare to bolster your faction's forces with some brave new Ascended.

RIFT begins Ascend-a-Friend referral promotion originally appeared on Massively on Mon, 09 May 2011 20:00:00 EST. With almost two months on the post-launch clock at Trion Worlds, RIFT appears to be holding its own in the wild and woolly field of MMORPGs. With a major update and the first world event under its belt, RIFT is sailing into the future with the wind at its back and a hull full of subscribers below.

We got Trion's Scott Hartsman on the phone to discuss RIFT's second big patch, Update 1.2, as well as to see how the game's progressed thus far and where the team is trying to take it into the future. And of course we couldn't let this opportunity pass by without a candid dissection of the uneven world event and how Trion plans to learn from its mistakes.

So hit the jump and witness Scott Hartsman giving us a Care Bear Stare full of info and exclusive tidbits about the inner workings of RIFT!
Continue reading An exclusive look at RIFT's Update 1.2 and beyond with Scott Hartsman [Updated]

An exclusive look at RIFT's Update 1.2 and beyond with Scott Hartsman [Updated] originally appeared on Massively on Fri, 22 Apr 2011 16:30:00 EST. So you didn't get a chance to take part in the last free trial weekend in RIFT. Maybe you didn't have time to play over the weekend, maybe your friends ran out of keys, maybe they're just useless at giving you those keys, or maybe you're avoiding the game anyway and want no part of a free event. If you belong to any group other than the last, however, you're in luck -- another free weekend is coming, starting this Friday and running through Monday, April 11th.

As with the last event, players who sign up will be granted access to a limited version of the game during this second iteration of Allies of the Ascended. Existing players will be receiving special ally codes via email to distribute to friends, neighbors, and anyone else who hasn't yet tried RIFT but might enjoy it. So if all of your friends won't stop talking about the game, be sure to grab a key and enjoy some soul-filled action for the weekend.
RIFT offers another free trial weekend for friends of players originally appeared on Massively on Wed, 06 Apr 2011 21:00:00 EST. Playing one with friends of course! Realizing this, SOE just rolled out a Recruit-a-Friend program for EverQuest II. This is one of the better Recruit-a-Friend programs we've seen lately considering the quality of incentives.

Anyone with an EQ2 account in good standing, active or inactive, can invite their friends to take a free 14-day trial of EQ2 content up to the Rise of Kunark expansion. There does not appear to be any limit to how many friends you can invite. While grouped with a friend, you will (both?) receive a 3x experience bonus. Mentor the friend and he or she will receive an additional 10% adventure experience. MMOs are all about having a massive amount of people in one world, so you might as well drag a few of your real life friends along for the ride, right? Or are you more of the person who likes to leave his friends behind, so you can have all of those pretty treasures and super powerful abilities for yourself?

Today's grind question wants to know if you enjoy taking advantage of those "bring your friends" offers and why you do it. Is it all about having a way to get your friends into your favorite game quickly and easily, with things like triple the experience for your buddy? Or is it more because you get that sweet mount and free game time? Whatever the reason is, let us know if why you've taken advantage of these programs, or perhaps why you may not be so keen on the whole idea down in the lovely white comment box below.
The Daily Grind: Do you take advantage of recruit-a-friend offers? originally appeared on Massively on Mon, 12 Jan 2009 08:00:00 EST. Warhammer Online's Grab Bag 7 discusses the recruit-a-friend and trial programs, as well as a handful of quite specific questions relating to dungeons and items found later in the game -- in other words, it's got a bit of something for everyone. There's good news for Europe, as the recruit-a-friend promotion is being sorted out by GOA right now and should be available to Europeans soon. Some confusion regarding the trial client is also cleared up; yes, it is the same as the retail game client, but trialing players who want to subscribe will still need to pick up a retail copy to get an account key.

Perhaps the most interesting bit of trial-related information is that a standalone trial, independent of recruit-a-friend, is on its way too. The introduction of free trials usually feels like the beginning of a new stage in an MMO's life, reminding you that they're not that new anymore and should have had time to find their feet.. Occasionally free trials are brought about in an attempt to save a sinking ship, but we really don't think that's the case here. You can read about the trials, along with the answers to some other miscellaneous questions, at the latest Grab Bag.

WAR Grab Bag no. 7: Recruit-a-Friend, trials and more originally appeared on Massively on Sun, 11 Jan 2009 12:00:00 EST. When Christmas comes and you want to find the very best present, let your friends and family go to WAR with you! Warhammer Online has just thrown open the gates to its own recruit-a-friend program, letting current subscribers send out free 14 day trials to anyone they wish. The only catch to the program is that you get a limited number of invites. Initially you get three for being a subscriber and then you receive one new invite each month to a maximum of six.

If your buddy converts his trial account to a full account by buying the game, then you get the standard 30 days free. Mythic's notice has already promised more rewards for recruiting in the future though, so it seems the program will expand beyond the scope of free game time. Although, honestly, none of us are arguing against free game time. It's the gift that keeps on giving, until someone steals your keep.

Note: This may sound familiar. It doesn't give the experience bonuses that the World of Warcraft offer of the same name does. In fact, the WAR Recruit-a-Friend is similar to what's happening with EVE Online: you invite a friend to a free trial. If that friend becomes a subscriber, the invitation sender receives 30 days of free game time credited to their account. You can recruit up to three people, although over your time subscribed this increases to a maximum of six recruitment notices you can have on deck at any given time. For more info on how this works, log into your master account to see how it's done.

Co-lead designer Tom Chilton and producer J. Allen Brack spoke with Oli Welsh from Eurogamer at the Games Convention in Leipzig, about where the Blizzard title is now, and where it's heading.

The interview touched on how Blizzard will handle instances in the Death Knight starting zone in Wrath of the Lich King, with Brack stating that instances won't actually be used. Rather, a player's environment will shift between different world states dependent upon quest progression. Other highlights of their talk include the design aspects of the hero class, faster leveling, and whether new players can really have the same experience that drew so many gamers to World of Warcraft years ago. How substantial? Well, how about some hyper-fast leveling and a unique mount substantial? The brand new updated Blizzard Support FAQ offers the nitty gritty, but here are the highlights:

Recruited players are now 'linked' to the player account the invitation was sent from.

Grouping with a linked player allows both of you to level very quickly. As long as your character and the recruit character are relatively even level, you'll both recieve 3x the normal experience.

Recruiting players can summon their friends to them once an hour, via a spell, up to level 60.

For every two levels a recruited player earns, he can grant one level to a character played by the veteran. This character must be lower level than the recruit player's character.

If the recruit upgrades to a full account from the 10-day trial, these benefits last a full 90 days.

If the recruit buys a two month subscription as well as upgrading, the recruiting player is granted a unique Zhevra mount.

If these sound like fun, and you've been meaning to get a buddy into the game, you can jump into using the new program via the recruit-a-friend splash page.
