I'm not much of a shooter fan and probably never will be. Sure, I have as much fun blasting my way through monsters as the next gamer, but I rarely have the patience or physical stamina to overcome the pains and frustrations of shooter PvP. After all, my first rule of PvP applies especially well to shooters: <em>There is always someone better than you</em>. <a href="http://www.planetcyrene.com/html/index.html"><em>Planet Cyrene</em></a>, the new world being added to the impressive portfolio of <a href="http://www.entropiauniverse.com/">Entropia Universe</a>, tasks players tasks similar to those found in <a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com/home/?"><em>Planet Calypso</em></a> and mixes in PvP arenas that promise to frustrate (or delight) players, depending on their skill level. I sat down with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ed-robles-III/">Ed Robles III</a>, lead developer for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/entropia/">Planet Cyrene</a>,</em> to see just how nasty and expensive things might get.<br />
<br />
Remember, this is the Entropia Universe we are talking about, and that means players will spend real money on bullets, armor, and practically everything else. Fortunately, players can earn items that are worth real money as well. Call it gambling or whatever you want, but it still seems to be a pretty successful formula.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/16/free-for-all-planet-cyrene-adds-to-the-high-stakes-worlds-of-en/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Free for All: Planet Cyrene adds to the high-stakes worlds of Entropia</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/16/free-for-all-planet-cyrene-adds-to-the-high-stakes-worlds-of-en/">Free for All: Planet Cyrene adds to the high-stakes worlds of Entropia</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 16 May 2012 20:00:00 EST. What a long way <a href="http://everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II's</em></a> come! If you had said back in 2004 that the game would not only go free-to-play but have microtransactions and emerge largely intact, I probably would have run to get my pitchfork. But here we are in 2012, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EQII's</em></a> website has a huge green button that says "Play Free" in big letters, with a long list of special deals on station cash and Marketplace items.<br />
<br />
In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook/">Tattered Notebook</a>, I want to look back at the evolution of <em>EQII </em>to see how it successfully transitioned while gauging where it's headed down the road when it comes to its payment model. The official move to free-to-play might seem like the final hurdle, but I think we still have a few more around the bend.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/12/the-tattered-notebook-learning-from-eqiis-free-to-play-model/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Learning from EQII's free-to-play model</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/12/the-tattered-notebook-learning-from-eqiis-free-to-play-model/">The Tattered Notebook: Learning from EQII's free-to-play model</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 12 May 2012 14:00:00 EST. <a href="http://heroesofnewerth.com/"><em>Heroes of Newerth</em></a> released a brand-new community-inspired MidWars game map this week to lend official support to the popular unofficial game mode. <a href="http://leagueoflegends.com/"><em>League of Legends</em></a> revealed upcoming champion Varus with a full run-down of his abilities and a great art spotlight video. <a href="http://dota2.com/"><em>Dota 2</em></a> fixed some bizarre bugs and introduced classic hero Phantom Lancer. <a href="http://riseofimmortals.com/"><em>Rise of Immortals</em></a> revealed details of its upcoming immortal Nauria, the Angel of Agony. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/diablo-III/">Diablo III</a></em> may not be out yet, but that's no good reason not to be filling up your virtual coffers for the day that it hits the streets! <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard/">Blizzard</a> has thrown the switch on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/battle.net-balance/">Battle.net Balance</a>, activating its online payment service that allows players to charge up their Battle.net funds to purchase various Blizzard game services.<br />
<br />
The new Balance system can be used to buy <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> game time (although you can't set up a recurring subscription with it), in-game pets and mounts, paid account services in <em>WoW</em> such as character transfers, digital copies of Blizzard titles, and the opportunity to buy and sell items on <em>Diablo III's</em> auction house. It's important to note that not all regions will be able to participate in <em>Diablo III's</em> real-money transactions, however.<br />
<br />
Once real money has been funneled into Battle.net Balance, it cannot be converted back into cash. Blizzard does state that in some regions, players will have an option to get cash back on <em>Diablo III</em> auction sales via PayPal. The company also mentioned that there is a cap on how much any player can have in his or her Balance account and that there are potentially region-specific expiration dates for Balance funds.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/07/battle-net-balance-boots-up/">Battle.net Balance boots up</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 07 Feb 2012 09:00:00 EST. South Korean MMO makers are under the Game Rating Board's microscope for allegedly obstructing an investigation related to MMORPG gambling. The ratings board has questions regarding real-world money transactions that offer a chance at valuable in-game items, and a veritable who's who of Korean development firms are refusing to fully cooperate, according to <a href="http://www.thisisgame.com/go/2011/09/21/whats-speculative-and-whats-not/">This Is Game</a>.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/nexon">Nexon</a>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/hanbitsoft">HanbitSoft</a> are just a few of the companies mentioned in the report, and while the publishers have given up item names, costs, and other details related to the transactions, the companies are thus far refusing to divulge information on payout percentages.<br />
<br />
GRB chairman Soo Keun Lee says that his organization is simply trying to determine the legality of RMT transactions using a set of gambling standards adopted by South Korea in 2008. "Game companies ask us why GRB tries to touch their business model and [they] refuse our request[s]," he said.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/22/nexon-ncsoft-refuse-to-fully-cooperate-with-south-korean-mmo-ga/">Nexon, NCsoft refuse to fully cooperate with South Korean MMO gambling probe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 22 Sep 2011 17:00:00 EST. It's been a long time since we've heard anything about Diamonds being reinstituted into <a href="http://us.runesofmagic.com/us/index.html"><em>Runes of Magic's</em></a> auction house. Since that fateful day they were removed, a lot of new players have joined, veterans have left and some things that should not have been forgotten... were lost.<br />
<br />
Having Diamonds in the auction house is an important feature that was planned from the get-go. It allows for seamless trading and player-controlled price fluctuations that keep all items obtainable for everyone. It's about having the freedom to play multiple ways. Options are more numerous than simply paying and having everything opened up or not paying and being stuck. With <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/runes-of-magic/"><em>RoM's</em></a> cash-shop items being integrated into the title's gameplay, there's a grayscale that lets players have many more options in how they want to play.<br />
<br />
It's not an overly complex issue, but one worth looking back on. Getting Diamonds back in the auction house isn't a lost cause, but the issue has dragged on to the point that long time players may have given up all hope. This edition of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lost-pages-of-taborea/">Lost Pages of Taborea</a> is all about looking back at the beginning and bringing players up to speed on diamonds in (or not-in) the auction house.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/18/lost-pages-of-taborea-a-history-of-diamonds/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Lost Pages of Taborea: A history of Diamonds</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/18/lost-pages-of-taborea-a-history-of-diamonds/">Lost Pages of Taborea: A history of Diamonds</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 18 Jul 2011 19:00:00 EST. For $6 million you could buy a heck of a lot of tacos -- or one virtual planet. Wisely, <a href="http://www.seeglobalentertainment.com/">SEE Virtual Worlds</a> went the latter route, snapping up <a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com/home/"><em>Planet Calypso</em></a> from <a href="http://www.mindark.com/">MindArk</a> and saving itself massive heartburn. The sci-fi-themed <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/planet-calypso/"><em>Planet Calypso</em></a> operates under the umbrella of <a href="http://www.entropiauniverse.com/"><em>Entropia Universe</em></a> and boasts 950,000 registered accounts since coming online in 2003. <br />
<br />
As part of the deal, SEE Virtual Worlds also acquired all of the assets of <a href="http://www.mindark.com/company/first-planet-company-ab/">First Planet Company</a>, a former subsidiary of MindArk, which has been transformed into SEE Digital Studios. Under this reorganization, SEE Digital Studios is now responsible for developing and operating<em> Planet Calypso, <a href="http://www.planetmichael.com/">Planet Michael</a></em> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/universal-monsters/"><em>Universal Monsters</em></a>. The company is expected to hire on additional team members for these projects.<br />
<br />
Fresh from the champagne celebration, SEE Virtual Worlds President <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Corey-Redmond/">Corey Redmond</a> sat down with us to discuss this deal and the future of these three titles. Hit the jump to boogie with Michael Jackson, scream in terror at the Wolfman, and navigate the economy of virtual worlds.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/27/see-buys-planet-calypso-for-6-million-talks-with-massively-for/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>SEE buys Planet Calypso for $6 million, talks with Massively for an encore</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/27/see-buys-planet-calypso-for-6-million-talks-with-massively-for/">SEE buys Planet Calypso for $6 million, talks with Massively for an encore</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 27 Jan 2011 10:00:00 EST. The game's developer, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a>, has approached the problem from a few different angles. Central to their strategy of combating sellers of the game's currency called ISK (Interstellar Kredits) is to offer another way for players to exchange real world currency for the virtual in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> -- "PLEX", or the <a href="http://support.eve-online.com/Pages/KB/Article.aspx?id=495">30 Day Pilot License Extension</a>. PLEX is an in-game item that represents gameplay time and can be bought, sold, or traded on the open market in-game. PLEX has been integral in combating the numerous shady ISK selling websites in operation and CCP's dev blog last week showed how <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=684">the playerbase is starting to embrace this system</a>. <br /><br />After all, if this practice of outright buying in-game assets with real world cash is going to happen in <em>EVE</em>, as with most MMOs (and regardless of what the developers try to do to curb this) it might as well be via a system the devs can regulate. It's a slippery slope, and <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP</a>'s approach to the problem does have some critics, but thus far it's been successful. PLEX has only been one facet of their battle against the ISK spammers, sellers, and the virtual armies of macro-using operations, though. CCP's operation "Unholy Rage" is a major offensive against the RMT operations exploiting the game, and is the subject of a dev blog from <em>EVE Online</em>'s <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gm-grimmi">GM Grimmi</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/17/eve-onlines-anti-rmt-operation-unholy-rage-bans-over-6200-accou/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Online's anti RMT operation Unholy Rage bans over 6200 accounts</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/17/eve-onlines-anti-rmt-operation-unholy-rage-bans-over-6200-accou/">EVE Online's anti RMT operation Unholy Rage bans over 6200 accounts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 17 Aug 2009 20:00:00 EST. Game developers tackle the problem in different ways. For instance, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/23/the-final-fantasy-xi-anti-rmt-task-force-strikes-back/"><em>Final Fantasy XI</em> has an anti-RMT task force</a> and <a href="http://onlinegamesareanichemarket.wordpress.com/2008/09/21/a-banning-we-will-go-a-banning-we-will-go-heave-ho-off-the-servers-yo-a-banning-we-will-go/"><em>Warhammer Online</em> has a zero-tolerance</a> name-and-shame approach to RMT. Other companies grab the bull by its horns and base their game around a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/27/live-gamers-andy-schneider-on-legitimizing-rmt-in-games-and-vir/">virtual item trade they can regulate</a>. <br /><br />The problem of RMT has affected <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> just as it has other MMO titles, if not moreso given how its player-driven economy and the Interstellar Kredit (ISK) currency is central to the game. Beyond the potential revenue lost to the black market when players pay real cash for their ships and modules or buy huge sums of ISK outright, there are also issues with players getting their accounts cleaned out by the shady companies (ostensibly) selling the ISK. When that cleverly-named player "ajakdsk" links you to his ISK selling site in a chat channel, following that link could infect your computer with a keylogger, resulting in a fire sale on whatever they find in your account. <br /><br /><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a>'s creators <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> have taken a two-prong approach to handling these issues.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/11/the-fight-against-rmt-in-eve-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The fight against RMT in EVE Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/11/the-fight-against-rmt-in-eve-online/">The fight against RMT in EVE Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 11 Aug 2009 19:00:00 EST. Despite how loudly many protest against the idea of RMT in games, the fact remains that there <em>is</em> a market for this and people spend a lot of real world money on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/virtual-goods">virtual goods</a> every year. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.livegamer.com/">Live Gamer</a> is a company that aims to legitimize real money trading, creating a way for players to spend their cash without the risks inherent in dealing with shady gold and item sellers. It also ensures that money spent on virtual goods is going back into the pockets of the game companies. While services such as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/live-gamer">Live Gamer</a> don't end the debate on whether or not RMT should be permitted in the first place, it's clearly here to stay, and some game publishers are <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/28/gdc09-applied-rmt-design-with-gopets-and-live-gamer/">getting proactive about real money trading</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/27/live-gamers-andy-schneider-on-legitimizing-rmt-in-games-and-vir/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Live Gamer's Andy Schneider on legitimizing RMT in games and virtual worlds</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/27/live-gamers-andy-schneider-on-legitimizing-rmt-in-games-and-vir/">Live Gamer's Andy Schneider on legitimizing RMT in games and virtual worlds</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 27 Apr 2009 19:00:00 EST. Not all of this is grey market, and more games are now being designed with microtransactions in mind. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/live-gamer">Live Gamer</a> aims to bring greater legitimacy to microtransactions through a regulated secondary market providing benefits to companies as well as the players themselves. Thus far they've worked with <a href="http://everquest2.station.sony.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>, <a href="http://vanguard.station.sony.com/"><em>Vanguard</em></a>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gopets"><em>GoPets</em></a>, with Acclaim's <a href="http://9dragons.acclaim.com/"><em>9 Dragons</em></a> on the way. <br /><br />Bethke and Schneider kick off their talk by explaining the fact that RMT in MMOs is inevitable, explaining how developers can be proactive about incorporating RMT into their titles rather than having it exist outside of the game. Live Gamer works with developers to create a legitimate system for trading virtual items for real money, one that's safe and secure. Of course, legitimizing RMT can also stir up controversy. <br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc09-rmt-design-panel/">GDC09: RMT Design panel</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc09-rmt-design-panel/#1450043"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/03/img_4203_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc09-rmt-design-panel/#1450041"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/03/img_4204_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc09-rmt-design-panel/#1450048"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/03/img_4205_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc09-rmt-design-panel/#1450047"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/03/img_4206_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc09-rmt-design-panel/#1450046"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/03/img_4207_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/28/gdc09-applied-rmt-design-with-gopets-and-live-gamer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC09: Applied RMT Design with GoPets and Live Gamer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/28/gdc09-applied-rmt-design-with-gopets-and-live-gamer/">GDC09: Applied RMT Design with GoPets and Live Gamer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 28 Mar 2009 12:00:00 EST. While the various MMO developers and operators have their own approaches to the problem, ranging from <a href="http://onlinegamesareanichemarket.wordpress.com/2008/09/21/a-banning-we-will-go-a-banning-we-will-go-heave-ho-off-the-servers-yo-a-banning-we-will-go/">public humiliation of spammers</a> to an <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/25/final-fantasy-xi-anti-rmt-squad-drops-the-banhammer/">anti-RMT strike force</a> that exists to root them out and eliminate them, a key (*the* key) part of this equation for grief is the playerbase itself. <br /><br />"<a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/gold-trading-exposed-introduction-article">Gold Trading Exposed</a>" is the first in a series of articles tackling the issues surrounding RMT written for <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net">Eurogamer</a> by Nick Ryan. Over time, Ryan will look at the multi-billion dollar trade in virtual gold through the eyes of all parties involved -- the gold traders, the developers, and of course the players themselves (many of whom deny they buy gold). Ryan points out there there's no small amount of hypocrisy from MMO playerbases which profess a hatred for the gold selling trade since, after all, there must be a reason that gold sellers thrive and multiply.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/24/gold-trading-exposed-a-look-at-multi-billion-dollar-grey-marke/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>'Gold Trading Exposed' a look at multi-billion dollar grey market in MMOs</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/24/gold-trading-exposed-a-look-at-multi-billion-dollar-grey-marke/">'Gold Trading Exposed' a look at multi-billion dollar grey market in MMOs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 24 Mar 2009 13:00:00 EST. As we mentioned earlier today, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/12/the-community-responds-to-a-week-of-microtransaction-announcemen/">it's been kind of a big week for alternate revenue streams</a>. Whether you're a staunch subscription traditionalist or a big fan of mini-payments and free-to-play gaming, it's hard to deny that this week reflects some major changes in the MMO landscape. We've already heard from the rest of the MMO community. Now it's your turn (<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/22/the-daily-grind-how-do-you-feel-about-microtransactions/">again</a>). What do you think about microtransactions as a way to subsidize an online game service?<br /><br />Do you feel strongly that flat monthly fees are the only way to go? Are you okay with companies offering micro-payment bundles on top of that fee, as <a href="http://www.coh.com"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> has done for some time and SOE began doing this week? Or are you more of a fan of free play options and pay-as-you-go opportunities? Let us know in the comments below. Just remember, whichever side you fall on, there are respectable and sensical arguments for both viewpoints. Let's have a good discussion.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/12/the-daily-grind-what-do-you-think-about-rmt-and-microtransactio/">The Daily Grind: What do you think about RMT and microtransactions?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 12 Dec 2008 08:00:00 EST. But it wasn't always that way. In fact, it wasn't so long ago that the notion of people working in virtual settings and earning real world wealth was, quite frankly, bizarre. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.juliandibbell.com/">Julian Dibbell</a> was one of the first journalists to expose the idea of RMT and the possible existence of 'virtual sweatshops' to mainstream readers years ago, before such ideas and practices became almost commonplace in virtual worlds and MMOs. <p>I was in the bathroom the other day, reading <a href="http://www.gamesforwindows.com/en-US/Pages/index.aspx">Games for Windows</a> (because let's be honest, where else would anybody read GfW?) and they had an article on an extremely interesting, though vaguely troubling new shooter called <a href="http://www.kwari.com/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Kwari</span></a>. Its basic premise is that players pony up a small amount of cash, the amount varying depending on the stakes of the game, and players lose or gain a portion of the pot based on their fragging prowess. Or to put it more simply, it's like <a href="http://www.pokerstars.com/">online poker</a>, but instead of cards, there are bullets. Designer Eddie Gill of Kwari Limited was hoping that in adding a financial incentive to the basic shooter model, it would result in an experience that was much more intense for the players involved. And if he took in a cut of the profits as well, what's the harm?</p>
<p>By all accounts, <span style="font-style: italic;">Kwari</span> utterly fails at delivering an engaging shooter experience, so whatever sociological implications the game would have had were rendered moot because of sloppiness on the developer's part. Still, this perception that online games could be tweaked to be a form of online gambling got me thinking. Is this business model just a developer supported <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/12/19/how-to-make-rmt-obsolete-rather-than-legit/">real-money transaction (RMT) scheme</a>, or is it even deeper down the rabbit hole of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shylock">Shylock-esque</a> shamelessness?</p><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/05/the-kwari-model-can-rmt-be-taken-to-the-next-level/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Kwari model: Can RMT be taken to the next level?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/05/the-kwari-model-can-rmt-be-taken-to-the-next-level/">The Kwari model: Can RMT be taken to the next level?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 05 Feb 2008 14:00:00 EST. The last thing to be mentioned in the short blurb is the inclusion of in-game ads after the patch is live. Players already participate in a microtransaction-based model in order to buy certain upgrades for their Mechanaught, but obviously this wasn't enough of a cash-spinner, so <em>Exteel</em> will be able to take its place in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/23/marketing-in-virtual-worlds-which-company-gets-around-the-most/">this table</a> soon.<br /><br />Aside from the ads, there are a few other changes to come with the patch. A new map called Face-Off will be launched, two new Mechanaught sets will be available (one purchased with NCcoins from real money transactions), some changes to Territory Control rewards, weapon balancing, and a super-deformed gameplay option.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/24/upcoming-exteel-patch-to-introduce-in-game-ads/">Upcoming Exteel patch to introduce in-game ads</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 24 Jan 2008 22:00:00 EST.
