Why is this significant? ZeniMax is the owner of <a href="http://www.bethsoft.com/eng/index.php">Bethesda Softworks</a>, and thus both <em>Fallout</em> and <em>Elder</em> <em>Scrolls</em>. A <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/fallout-mmo"><em>Fallout</em> MMO is entirely possible</a>, but the business side of producing this title is somewhat complex. <a href="http://www.r1ft.com/mmo/the-fine-print-of-a-fallout-mmo/">Daedren over at r1ft Gaming</a> dissected the issue as it stood in November:<br /><br />Bethesda Softworks owns the rights to the the <em>Fallout</em> IP, while <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/interplay">Interplay</a> retains rights to a <em>Fallout</em> MMO. However, those rights are forfeit provided Interplay is unable to raise $30 million and begin development of the <em>Fallout</em> MMO by April of 2009. (This is presumably Interplay's "<a href="http://www.interplay.com/about/article.php?id=24">Project V13</a>" which involves other <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/24/interplay-launches-new-site-hires-chris-taylor-for-fallout-mmo/">original <em>Fallout</em> team members</a>.)<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/11/zenimax-media-hiring-for-mmo-division/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>ZeniMax Media hiring for MMO division</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/11/zenimax-media-hiring-for-mmo-division/">ZeniMax Media hiring for MMO division</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 11 Mar 2009 18:00:00 EST. Earlier this month, our very own <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/bloggers/kyle-horner">Kyle Horner</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/01/the-digital-continuum-lets-talk-about-the-fallout-mmo/">explored the real possibilities</a> of a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/fallout-mmo"><em>Fallout</em> MMO</a> in his <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-digital-continuum/">Digital Continuum</a> column. He talked about how the post-apocalyptic MMO could work in regards to an absence of lush scenery and a combat system based on pausing time. Expanding into another realm of that discussion, <a href="http://www.r1ft.com/author/dashe/">Daedren</a> over at <a href="http://www.r1ft.com">r1ft.com</a> goes more into the financial and legal probabilities of the development of a <em>Fallout</em> MMO.<br /><br />According to <a href="http://www.interplay.com">Interplay</a>'s <a href="http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Project_V13">agreement</a> with <a href="http://www.bethsoft.com">Bethesda</a>, there are a few stipulations when it comes to their retention of the IP for an MMO. For instance, they need to raise $30 million and begin development of the game by April, 2009. Even if they were able to raise that much based on investor faith in the wildly-successful <em>Fallout</em> name, where would they get the rest of the money? $30 million, an MMO does not make, and that's exactly what this article is about. Will Bethesda end up retaining the IP through fine print complications and actually make a better MMO than Interplay ever could? Check out <a href="http://www.r1ft.com/mmo/the-fine-print-of-a-fallout-mmo/">Daedren's complete argument</a>, including the facts as we know them today.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/06/the-fine-print-of-a-fallout-mmo/">The fine print of a Fallout MMO</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 06 Nov 2008 12:30:00 EST. We here at Massively have pointed to our <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/warhammer-online">fair share</a> of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/29/g4s-x-play-reviews-warhammer-online/">positive opinion</a> pieces for <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a>, but we realize that not all people see the game as fluffy bunnies and <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5im0Ssyyus">rainbow unicorns</a>. One such example of this is the ever-endearing <a href="http://www.r1ft.com/author/dashe/">Daedren</a> over at <a href="http://www.r1ft.com">r1ft.com</a>, whom we all love for his <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/16/daedren-pulls-no-punches-on-erling-ellingsen-interview/">insightful pessimism</a> towards our favorite MMOs.<br /><br />Despite the fact that Daedren spends much of <a href="http://www.r1ft.com/war/the-inevitable-meh-of-warhammer-online/">his article</a> reaming <em>Warhammer Online</em>, he ends by admitting that it may just be a general disdain for the fantasy genre as a whole, while <em>WAR</em> may just basically be in the wrong place at the wrong time. He writes, <em>"Whatever happened to making a player feel like they are a hero?" "The reason that </em>D&amp;D<em> and </em>Warhammer<em> tabletop games were popular is because the story revolved around the players; they could noticeably affect and change the world based on their decisions. This main aspect and magic of the game is lost in a sea of inane, repetitive and fun killing "Quests"."</em><hr />

In that lengthy article, Daedren gave his top reasons for <a href="http://www.ageofconan.com"><em>AoC</em></a>'s demise, and even offered it as a lesson learned for future developers. Comments on his site, and here at <em>Massively</em> were quite heated concerning players' malcontent with <span style="font-style: italic;">Age of Conan</span>. <br /><br />Since then, Daedren was able to grab the attention of <a href="http://www.funcom.com">Funcom</a>, and hence <a href="http://www.r1ft.com/age-of-conan/hell-froze-over-an-interview-with-erling-ellingsen/">an interview with Product Manager Erling Ellingsen</a>. In true Daedren style, he doesn't beat around the bush and asks the questions plaguing the minds of most former and current <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/age-of-conan">AoC</a> subscribers. Where is this PvP system we've heard so much about? Why announce a new expansion when the current game still needs so much work? <br /><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/16/daedren-pulls-no-punches-on-erling-ellingsen-interview/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Daedren pulls no punches on Erling Ellingsen interview</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/16/daedren-pulls-no-punches-on-erling-ellingsen-interview/">Daedren pulls no punches on Erling Ellingsen interview</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 16 Sep 2008 12:30:00 EST.
