The game has a dystopian setting, a single (but vast) <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/enterra">island refuge</a> is all that remains of the human race after the world was bathed in nuclear fire. As expected of a post-apocalyptic MMO, there will be areas of the game that are comprised of blasted out buildings and various gutted structures, but the island setting of Enterra will offer a wide variety of terrain for players to explore and exploit. <br /><br />Moll, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/earthrise"><em>Earthrise</em></a>'s community manager, explains in a recent blog post: <em>"As we developed Earthrise, we made sure that the world is tailored in such a way so it provides different game experiences - the whole island is divided almost equally between plains, hills and mountains."</em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/20/earthrise-devs-on-how-terrain-will-impact-gameplay/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Earthrise devs on how terrain will impact gameplay</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/20/earthrise-devs-on-how-terrain-will-impact-gameplay/">Earthrise devs on how terrain will impact gameplay</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 20 Jul 2009 16:00:00 EST. Their <a href="http://forums.play-earthrise.com/index.php?board=18.0">"Question of the Week" forum</a> always dishes out new info about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/earthrise"><em>Earthrise</em></a>. This week is no different and the devs explain how PvE gameplay can give <em>Earthrise</em> players a competitive edge in PvP. <br /><br />Players will be able to progress through storyline quest chains, alternately focusing on combat, crafting, and exploration. Although <em>Earthrise</em> will have a player-driven economy, <a href="http://www.mastheadstudios.com">Masthead Studios</a> writes, <em>"At its foundation, however, it is dependent on the constant supply of resources that are directly connected to PvE gameplay. Many of the missions will be built around the constant competition around resources."</em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/07/earthrise-pve-gameplay-to-give-competitive-edge-in-pvp/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Earthrise PvE gameplay to give competitive edge in PvP</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/07/earthrise-pve-gameplay-to-give-competitive-edge-in-pvp/">Earthrise PvE gameplay to give competitive edge in PvP</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 07 Jul 2009 17:00:00 EST. This brings up another transportation-related question, or several really. How will teleportation work in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/earthrise"><em>Earthrise</em></a>? What limitations will be put on it? Is teleportation accessible to individuals or is it a guild-level ability? The latest Question of the Week entry from the <em>Earthrise</em> devs at <a href="http://www.mastheadstudios.com">Masthead Studios</a> answers these questions and more. <br /><br />The game's sandbox <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/enterra">setting of Enterra</a> is a massive island with many zones. Conventional modes of transportation may not always be the best option for players who need to get from one place to another, hence the developers have included teleportation (travel, not combat) <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/game-mechanics">game mechanics</a>, but characters seeking instantaneous travel will need to pay fees for the privilege. There will be two simple types of teleportation -- short range for within zones, and long range, which can be a jump from one end of Enterra to another. The further you travel, the more you pay. Teleporters will be run by NPC factions, available to players aligned with that faction or neutrals, but <em>Earthrise</em>'s guilds will also be able to establish their own teleporters.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/29/earthrise-developers-explain-how-teleportation-will-affect-gamep/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Earthrise developers explain how teleportation will affect gameplay</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/29/earthrise-developers-explain-how-teleportation-will-affect-gamep/">Earthrise developers explain how teleportation will affect gameplay</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 29 Jun 2009 12:00:00 EST. Given the statements made by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/earthrise"><em>Earthrise</em></a> developer <a href="http://www.mastheadstudios.com">Masthead Studios</a> in the past, it's confirmed that full player looting will be both a driver and reward for PvP in this game. It's interesting to note that the inclusion of mechas in <em>Earthrise</em> will likely play a pivotal role in organized ganks or piracy of a sort. <br /><br />The <em>Earthrise</em> devs explained more about this today in "<a href="http://forums.play-earthrise.com/index.php?topic=4700.0">Mechas, Transit, and Loot</a>" on the game's official forums. The game's community manager Moll writes:<em> "Goliaths of steel used for combat and transit, mechas are definitely not invulnerable to damage and destruction. It takes a bit of effort, but even carefully planned and armed attacks can disrupt a planned resource transportation route and destroy a mecha."</em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/22/earthrise-devs-on-risk-vs-reward-with-mechas-in-organized-ganks/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Earthrise devs on risk vs. reward with mechas in organized ganks and looting</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/22/earthrise-devs-on-risk-vs-reward-with-mechas-in-organized-ganks/">Earthrise devs on risk vs. reward with mechas in organized ganks and looting</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 22 Jun 2009 19:00:00 EST. We've known that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/earthrise"><em>Earthrise</em></a> will have a mix of both online and offline character advancement. The <a href="http://www.mastheadstudios.com">Masthead Studios</a> response to the latest Question of the Week regarding skills, via <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/moll"><em>Earthrise</em> community manager Moll</a>, explains their approach to progression. Moll writes: <em>"Skills improvement is one of the pinnacles of Earthrise's sandbox gameplay. Players in Earthrise will gain skill points by killing monsters and completing quests. Those skill points can be invested in abilities, which are used in combat. The abilities interface dialog is interactive with options to buy and combine abilities by using tactics." </em><br /><br />Beyond this system of combining abilities Moll also writes that players won't be limited in terms of their skill choices and that a player can choose any skills in the game, in addition to combining all types of abilities into tactics. Moll says, <em>"The skill advancement system is easy to learn and offers numerous possibilities for character customization, much more than many other games on the market." </em>You can find the Question of the Week and feedback from the <em>Earthrise</em> community <a href="http://forums.play-earthrise.com/index.php?topic=4551.0">on the game's official forums</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/02/earthrise-devs-shed-some-light-on-skill-advancement/">Earthrise devs shed some light on skill advancement</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 02 Jun 2009 09:00:00 EST. Fortunately the game's creators have been running a <a href="http://forums.play-earthrise.com/index.php?board=18.0">Question of the Week forum category</a>, explaining some of the game mechanics involved with playing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/earthrise"><em>Earthrise</em></a>.The latest QOTW deals with dodging in combat, something we've been wondering about, given that Masthead Studios previously stated <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/21/physics-engine-grounds-earthrise-players/">they don't want players hopping around incessantly</a> out on the battlefield. <br /><br />Jumping will of course be used to avoid damage or cross distances at a quicker pace but, if their original intentions hold true now, jumping and perhaps dodging will be tied in with abilities. <em>Earthrise</em> community manager Moll answers this question: <em>"Will attacks and skills that do damage from a distance have instant effect or will a target perhaps be able to see it coming and have a slim possibility to dodge it completely?"</em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/28/earthrise-developers-explain-dodge-game-mechanics-in-pvp/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Earthrise developers explain dodge game mechanics in PvP</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/28/earthrise-developers-explain-dodge-game-mechanics-in-pvp/">Earthrise developers explain dodge game mechanics in PvP</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 28 May 2009 09:00:00 EST. Rather, the game is one where Earth's technocratic elite survive the global apocalypse via genetic immortality through cloning, and seek to rebuild the world according to utopian ideals. Schisms divide society which leads to outright hostilities and faction struggles, giving <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/earthrise"><em>Earthrise</em></a>'s players the opportunity to play some very different sorts of characters. The lore of <em>Earthrise</em> is steadily being fleshed out, but we're hoping that the gameplay will live up to expectations. <br /><br />Given that the title is still in early beta testing, we're always looking to get our questions about the game answered. <a href="http://www.mastheadstudios.com">Masthead Studios</a> has been doing just that with their <a href="http://forums.play-earthrise.com/index.php?board=18.0">"Question of the Week" forum for <em>Earthrise</em></a> in which the game's developers answer questions posed to them by the fans.
