Unless you had a really bad date that ended with fire and regret, "Valentine's Day" and "massacre" are typically not paired together. Of course this doesn't apply to <a href="http://www.runescape.com/"><em>RuneScape</em></a>, which loves to break the rules and keep us guessing. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/runescape"><em>RuneScape</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/11/massivelys-guide-to-valentines-day-festivities/">recently hosted a Valentine's Day Massacre</a> as a tongue-in-cheek way to celebrate both the holiday and a PvP zone called the Wilderness returning to the game, and by all accounts, <a href="http://services.runescape.com/m=news/valentines-day-massacre---results">it was a huge success</a>.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jagex/">Jagex</a> reports that 625,347 players met their untimely end during the event, which spanned 48 blood-soaked hours. Before the massacre began, the company ran a contest to see who could predict the kill count, and one player carried away the top prize with a guess of 623,500.<br />
<br />
For anyone else who participated in the slaughter, Jagex is selling a limited edition t-shirt commemorating the event. Available in red, white, or black <a href="http://runescape-us.spreadshirt.com/">in the Jagex store,</a> the tee says "I brought the Wilderness back" and can be purchased for $13.00.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/17/the-bloody-aftermath-runescapes-valentines-day-massacre-in-nu/">The bloody aftermath: RuneScape's Valentine's Day Massacre in numbers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 17 Feb 2011 21:00:00 EST. There is so much to be excited about in the MMORPG world that I am always perplexed when someone claims lack of innovation in the market. I tend to think that this comes from an inability to play more than one game, or to support more than one idea in gaming, rather than from the actual state of the market. The fact is that there is <em>so much</em> happening in the world of gaming, and specifically free-to-play gaming, a player should feel almost overwhelmed.<br />
<br />
I wanted to point out three games now in development (or very close to release) that I believe will do very well. Think of this as a list of predictions -- in fact I am going to have some fun with it and predict just how well these games will do. I have always enjoyed testing my gut. Concerning these three games, my gut is very, very excited. So, let's get right to the list.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/25/free-for-all-three-games-to-keep-an-eye-on/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Free for All: Three games to keep an eye on</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/25/free-for-all-three-games-to-keep-an-eye-on/">Free for All: Three games to keep an eye on</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 25 Aug 2010 17:00:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a> NDA has been <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/18/warhammer-online-nda-lifts-august-19th/">lifted</a>, and a veritable <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/elves-of-war/">tidal wave</a> of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online"><em>WAR</em></a>-related information has <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/massively-goes-to-war">struck the internet.</a> The open beta test is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/18/warhammer-online-na-open-beta-begins-september-7th/">imminent</a>, but countless <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/07/war-nda-probably-ends-next-week-ce-pre-orders-to-join-closed/">pre-order customers are already in the closed beta.</a> The game's launch is only a month away! So this is a great time to ask for your predictions: is <em>Warhammer Online</em> the long-awaited <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> killer?<br /><br />Some folks hoped it would be <a href="http://www.ageofconan.com"><em>Age of Conan</em></a>, but while that game is doing all right, it hasn't lived up for the hype for everyone. Are all your hopes placed in <em>WAR</em> now, or will it take <a href="http://www.bioware.com">BioWare</a>'s <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/kotoro"><em>Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Online</em></a> or <a href="http://crypticstudios.com/">Cryptic</a>'s <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> to move the genre into the next era? Hell, maybe <a href="http://massively.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>WoW</em></a> will <em>never</em> be dethroned by one game.<br /><br />Make your predictions here, but we have a disclaimer: we won't be held responsible for any shame and embarrassment when you're proven way off base in the future!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/20/the-daily-grind-is-war-the-wow-killer/">The Daily Grind: Is WAR the WoW killer?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 20 Aug 2008 08:00:00 EST. This is not surprising to us; savvy MMO developers will talk your ear off about how multi-million dollar graphics are at best <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/22/disneys-mike-goslin-stresses-importance-of-low-system-requirements/">a red herring</a> and at worst a <a href="http://www.fohguild.org/forums/mmorpg-general-discussion/27757-nino-one-upsides-vg-66.html#post699867">harbinger of doom.</a><br /><br />On the other hand, the study also said that by 2012, 70% of all organizations will be using virtual worlds, and that those endeavors will more successful because businesses will have learned exactly what to expect and will plan development accordingly.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.worldsinmotion.biz/2008/05/gartner_90_of_virtual_worlds_f.php">Worlds in Motion</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/17/study-says-90-of-virtual-worlds-dont-last-18-months/">Study says 90% of virtual worlds don't last 18 months</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 17 May 2008 07:00:00 EST.
