I can hear you right now: "What, <em>another </em>week on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eqmac/"><em>EverQuest Mac</em></a>? There's, like, six people who play that! Move on to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/neocron/"><em>Neocron</em></a> already!" Oh, be patient my lovelies. I know that the whole <em>EQMac</em> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/14/the-game-archaeologist-mourns-the-end-of-eqmac/">termination</a>/<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/21/the-game-archaeologist-chats-with-john-smedley-about-eqmacs-sal/">salvation</a> thing is so yesterday's news, particularly with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">SOE</a> embroiled <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/25/the-tattered-notebook-breaking-up-the-family/">in a completely different community fiasco</a> last week, but I had one last thing to share with you.<br />
<br />
You see, a month ago when I heard that <em>EQMac </em>was going to be shut down, I put out some feelers for any players who might want to share their side of the story. Apparently, this small community is downright fanatical about this game and deluged my inbox with stories and pleas. While it seems like the crisis has passed for these players, I still want to share some of these testimonies with you because that's what this column is about.<br />
<br />
So indulge me with one last week of <em>EQMac </em>discussion before we shift our attention elsewhere. If you're curious why players in 2012 would deliberately choose to game on an archaic server with extremely old-school rules, then the answer awaits you after the jump. And if you'd like to try out this completely free version of <em>EverQuest</em>, <a href="http://www.eqmac.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&amp;t=10782">then head over to the EQMac.com forums</a> for step-by-step instructions.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/28/the-game-archaeologist-reminisces-with-eqmac-vets/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist reminisces with EQMac vets</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/28/the-game-archaeologist-reminisces-with-eqmac-vets/">The Game Archaeologist reminisces with EQMac vets</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 28 Feb 2012 19:00:00 EST. That solution has led to <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=571 ">fewer Fortress-related crashes and overall improved performance</a>, but not everyone is as enthusiastic about the changes <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mythic-entertainment">Mythic</a> has made to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a>. <br /><br />A good example of this type of dissent among the <em>WAR</em> ranks can be found at <a href="http://www.mmocrunch.com">MMOCrunch</a> in a criticism written by Paragus. He takes aim at the Tier 4 campaign changes to Fortresses and states that imposing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/population">population thresholds</a> diminishes the very thing WAR bills itself as -- a massive realm-vs.-realm game. He doesn't pull any punches when he states, <span style="font-style: italic;">"The fact that they are trying to spin this by saying 'to allow even more players to participate' by capping population in a given area only makes me feel better about pulling my guild out of this game. I'll be waiting for the flames from Warhammer fans."</span><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/10/counterpoint-on-warhammer-onlines-fortress-siege-population-cap/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Counterpoint on Warhammer Online's Fortress siege population caps</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/10/counterpoint-on-warhammer-onlines-fortress-siege-population-cap/">Counterpoint on Warhammer Online's Fortress siege population caps</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 10 Jan 2009 17:00:00 EST. Public</a> saying they "have a neat idea" for a <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pokemon">Pok&eacute;mon</a></em> MMO and the maker of casual <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii">Wii</a> title <em><a href="http://www.wiiware-world.com/games/wiiware/pop">Pop</a></em> saying the same thing? Answer: a foot in the door, and little else. That hasn't stopped nnooo.com from <a href="http://nnooo.com/games/licenses.html">pitching the idea</a> to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo">Nintendo</a> via their website, along with ideas for games based on the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlestar_Galactica_%28re-imagining%29">Battlestar Galactica</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_bond">James Bond</a>, and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-men">X-Men</a> franchises. We're not saying they don't have the talent to back this claim, but a casual title is a far cry from a polished MMO -- and possibly Nintendo's first one, at that.<br /><br />Even assuming this pitch had a chance to be taken seriously by Nintendo, it's highly unlikely the company would let a third-party develop it, judging by their existing <em>Pok&eacute;mon</em> line's history. You know, if we're calling dibs, we've <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/29/games-that-could-be-mmos-pokemon/">already pitched</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/16/tv-shows-that-could-be-mmos-battlestar-galactica/">two of these ideas</a> ourselves. Hmm ... <strong>Massively Games</strong> ... has a nice ring, doesn't it?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.nintendolife.com/articles/2008/05/19/pokemon_mmo_please">NintendoLife</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/20/nnooo-com-pitches-pokemon-mmo-own-name-gives-the-answer/">Nnooo.com pitches Pokemon MMO; own name gives the answer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 20 May 2008 14:30:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest/"><em>EverQuest</em></a>'s annual Fabled event has more than enough power to replace the creatures of days of yore with more powerful versions of themselves (and loot ready for present-day challenges as well!). The Fabled power is bringing old players back to the fold in record numbers to relive old and loved raids. While exploring the Fabled Planes of Power last night, we saw people gathering for Fabled Saryrn and Vex Thal raids, and several groups were making their ways up the towers of the Bastion of Thunder to take on these newly empowered foes.<br /><br /><a href="http://massively.com/tag/soe/">SOE</a> continues with their weekly retelling of the lore of the Planes of Power with the skinny on every wing and tower boss. All the way through the <a href="http://eqplayers.station.sony.com/news_article.vm?id=50885">Bastion of Thunder</a>, from Askr to Agnarr himself -- the living manifestation of Karana's anger. When you meet Agnarr and kill him, remember -- Karana will thank you for it.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/08/eq-lore-the-bastion-of-thunder/">EQ Lore: The Bastion of Thunder</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 08 Apr 2008 13:00:00 EST.
