When a ship is destroyed in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE Online</em></a>, half of its fitted modules are destroyed and half are dropped as loot. When <em>EVE</em> was young, the list of modules destroyed and dropped in a kill was sent in an in-game mail to both the victim and the player who got the killing blow. Today the killmail is stored in a players' character sheet rather than clogging up his inbox, providing a record of all the ships he's killed and those he's lost in combat. When you destroy a player's escape capsule, however, all you're left with is a blank killmail and a tasty corpse floating in space.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;nbid=2922">In a new devblog, CCP Masterplan describes</a> the introduction of one of <em>EVE</em>'s most requested features: implants on pod killmails. When an escape pod is destroyed, a list of all the expensive implants installed in the corpse's head will be added to the currently blank killmail, letting players put a much more accurate value on successful kills. This comes as good news to corporations and alliances judging their war performance using killboard valuations.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/20/eve-online-adding-implants-to-killmails/">EVE Online adding implants to killmails</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 20 Oct 2011 16:00:00 EST. Every month, <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> developer <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/ccp-fallout">CCP Fallout</a> trawls the forums to find the best of the community's creative efforts. Previous editions of the Celebrating the Creative Player blog have looked at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/22/ccp-showcases-the-eve-communitys-creativity-in-a-new-monthly-de/">in-game news websites</a>, a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/03/eve-online-player-creativity-gallente-shuttle-in-minecraft-an/">Gallente shuttle remade in Minecraft</a>, and the cross-platform <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/07/eve-online-player-creativity-ship-fitting-edition/">Python Fitting Tool</a>. <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=852">This month's bumper edition</a> starts off with one of my favourite recent creations -- <a href="http://swiftandbitter.com/eve/wtd/">a flowchart</a> designed to help players pick what they want to do in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a>. Each option is linked to further reading on the topic, making it a handy tool for new players who find themselves lost in <em>EVE</em>.<br />
<br />
Also impressing the devs this month is <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&amp;threadID=1441882">a tool designed to track the bounties</a> gained from missions. It's often difficult to work out what the most profitable missions are to run, and this tool simplifies that by recording a log of bounties on each mission. My personal favourite highlight this month was <em>EVE</em> player Guindel Angeline's <a href="http://guindel.deviantart.com/art/pod-193905534">papercraft escape pod</a>. We've seen some incredible papercraft <em>EVE</em> ships before, but I think this is the first time someone's made the escape pod.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/06/eve-online-player-creativity-papercraft-pod-edition/">EVE Online player creativity -- Papercraft pod edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 06 Feb 2011 11:00:00 EST. Everyone knows that the death penalty in <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">EVE Online</span></a> is harsh but is it really as bad as we make it out to be? Is losing a ship really a devastating blow or does the emotional factor of losing something we've put care and attention into make us exaggerate the loss? Since <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/" style="font-style: italic;">EVE</a>'s gameplay is focused entirely on piloting ships rather than <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/walking-in-stations/">walking around with your character</a>, we can get very attached to our ships and feel a great sense of loss at their destruction. It can be hard to keep in mind that our ships in <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span> are just tools, which can make their loss feel a lot harsher than it should be. Is this the fault of the player for getting attached to their ship or of the game design for not encouraging us to form attachments with our characters instead?<br /><br />In this brief article, I discuss some of the golden rules of <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span> used to minimise the death penalty and ask whether our perceptions of <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE Online</span>'s death penalty are really that accurate.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/07/eve-evolved-is-eve-onlines-death-penalty-really-that-harsh/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: Is EVE Online's death penalty really that harsh?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/07/eve-evolved-is-eve-onlines-death-penalty-really-that-harsh/">EVE Evolved: Is EVE Online's death penalty really that harsh?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 07 Dec 2008 17:00:00 EST. There are so many things you wish someone had told you before you went out and made a noobish ass of yourself. <br /><br />Even with the much-improved Aura tutorial that's been implemented in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><span style="font-style: italic;">EVE,</span></a> there are lots of things that still cause players to scream something to the effect of,<span style="font-style: italic;"> "Why didn't anyone warn me?!" </span>This is often accompanied by frantically warping away from one's obliterated ship in an escape pod with a liberal amount of cursing. Of course, it doesn't have to be this way.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/23/ten-things-every-new-player-should-know-about-eve-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Ten things every new player should know about EVE Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/23/ten-things-every-new-player-should-know-about-eve-online/">Ten things every new player should know about EVE Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 23 Jul 2008 16:30:00 EST. There should be no question in a player's mind about this, regardless of whether or not they believe themselves to be completely safe in Empire space. The first podding or two pounds that lesson into your head. Still, for most, life in Empire is relatively safe. <br /><br />But there are two main threats that loom large for <a href="http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=carebear">carebears</a> these days, particularly for industrial-types. One is JihadSwarm, the GoonSwarm effort to suicide bomb as many Empire miners as possible, which they've drenched in zealotry. The other threat is receiving a wardec from another corp. Once war is declared upon a corporation or alliance, they are fair game to all aggressors and Concord will not intervene to protect the war targets. In effect, nowhere outside of a station can be 100% safe to a war target. <br /><br />But, what if you could run a program that gives a proximity alert when hostiles enter your system?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/21/proximity-alerts-controversial-in-eve-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Proximity alerts controversial in EVE Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/21/proximity-alerts-controversial-in-eve-online/">Proximity alerts controversial in EVE Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 21 Apr 2008 21:00:00 EST. (Never mind that business about it being the only video podcast on Massively...)<br /></em><br />It's Tuesday! Hooray! If you like having intellectual discussions about current political events and their impact on the everyday life of the brave men and women serving abroad fighting for our freedom then I am afraid you have come to the wrong place. I don't have a clue about the wars going on here on planet Earth. What I do know about however, is a MMO universe so vast and EPIC that I makes the petty struggles of this world seem insignificant.
