Man oh man, why couldn't I just take a month or so off of this column without getting sucked back into it? Why must classic MMOs be so compelling and newsworthy these days?<br />
<br />
I planned to take some time off of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-game-archaeologist/">TGA</a> while I went through <a href="http://darkageofcamelot.com/"><em>Dark Age of Camelot</em></a> in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/choose-my-adventure">Choose My Adventure</a> (which you're all reading, yes?), but there was so much to talk about regarding older MMOs that I couldn't sit back and stay mum. Ergo, I've dashed off this special "break" column devoted to commenting on recent news about classic games. Hopefully this will help tide you over until I get back into the full swing of things in April.<br />
<br />
On the docket for today's discussion is <a href="http://vgplayers.station.sony.com/"><em>Vanguard's</em></a> forthcoming F2P change, <a href="http://www.everquest.com/"><em>EverQuest's</em></a> recent conversion, <a href="http://www.anarchy-online.com"><em>Anarchy Online's</em></a> stunning graphic engine video, and more!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/03/the-game-archaeologist-bio-break/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist: Bio break!</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/03/the-game-archaeologist-bio-break/">The Game Archaeologist: Bio break!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 03 Apr 2012 13:00:00 EST. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-online-adventures/">EverQuest Online Adventures</a></em>, the console spinoff of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">SOE's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest/"><em>EverQuest</em></a> franchise, is counting down the hours until the server is switched off at midnight tonight. In addition to <em>EQOA</em>, SOE is shuttering three other underperforming titles today: <em>Cosmic Rift, Infantry</em>, and <em>Star Chamber: The Harbinger Saga.</em><br />
<br />
Instead of spending its final days in sorrow, the <em>EQOA </em>community joined the dev team for a series of epic battles against marauding dragons this past week. Players <a href="http://forums.station.sony.com/eqoa/posts/list.m?topic_id=115600014245">have filled the forums</a> with posts about <a href="http://forums.station.sony.com/eqoa/posts/list.m?topic_id=115600014365">their favorite in-game memories</a> over the past nine years of gameplay. To compensate players for the loss of their game world, SOE gave <em>EQOA </em>subscribers three months of gold-level status in <em>EverQuest </em>and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>.<br />
<br />
<em>EQOA </em>came out in 2003 on the PlayStation 2 and was one of the first generation of console MMOs. For those Massively readers feeling nostalgic or curious about it, definitely check out our series on the game: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/08/the-game-archaeologists-excellent-everquest-online-adventures/">part 1</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/15/the-game-archaeologists-excellent-everquest-online-adventures/">part 2</a>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/22/the-game-archaeologists-excellent-everquest-online-adventures/">part 3</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/29/everquest-online-adventures-slays-its-final-dragon/">EverQuest Online Adventures slays its final dragon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 29 Mar 2012 16:00:00 EST. It appears that Leap Day 2012 is not destined to be kind to the MMO industry. On top of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/29/blizzard-announces-layoffs-of-600-employees-worldwide/">layoffs</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/29/black-prophecy-developer-reakktor-media-on-its-last-legs/">struggling studios</a>, we've received word that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">Sony Online Entertainment</a> has delivered a pink slip to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-online-adventures/"><em>EverQuest Online Adventures</em></a>. According to the company, <em>EQOA </em>will be sunsetted on March 29th.<br />
<br />
No specific reason was given for the move, but <a href="http://everquestonlineadventures.station.sony.com/news_story.vm?id=67961">a farewell letter posted on the site</a> attempts to soften the blow: "This is not an easy decision, but there comes a time when it's best for our developers to move on to the next adventure, and that day has come." In the <a href="http://forums.station.sony.com/eqoa/posts/list.m?topic_id=115600014244">closure FAQ</a>, SOE also promises <span class="postbody">a celebration at the end of the game's run.</span><br />
<br />
To appease its remaining <em>EQOA </em>customers, SOE is offering three months of gold membership in both <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest"><em>EverQuest</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> for current subscribers. This consolation prize will become effective on March 16th. SOE will also not be charging current players during March.<br />
<br />
<em>EQOA </em>has always been the smallest member of the <em>EverQuest </em>franchise since its release in 2003 on the PlayStation 2. We covered it in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/08/the-game-archaeologists-excellent-everquest-online-adventures/">our Game Archaeologist column</a> late last year and were impressed by the passion and memories that the game's fans shared.<br />

If you're playing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/final-fantasy-xi"><em>Final Fantasy XI</em></a> on your PlayStation 3, you might want to head to <a href="http://ffxi.gamerescape.com/2012/01/24/playstation-3-hdds-getting-more-room-for-final-fantasy-xi/">Gamer Escape</a> to get the details on an upcoming hardware tweak.<br />
<br />
The website reports that sometime in February, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/sony">Sony</a> will release a system update for the PS3 that will increase the hard drive space necessary to run the PlayStation 2 version of <em>FFXI</em>. PS3 models that feature 60GB and 20GB drives are the only units being affected, but it's worth noting because the <em>FFXI</em> client will require an additional 9GB of space after the patch (21GB total).<br />
<br />
The PS2 version of <em>FFXI</em> isn't changing, nor is the Windows version, so don't sweat it if you're not playing the title on your PS3. If you are, though, the source article is worth a read. As of press time, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/square-enix">Square-Enix</a> hasn't divulged a reason for the space increase.<br />

It's been a good month looking back at <a href="http://everquestonlineadventures.station.sony.com/"><em>EverQuest Online Adventures</em></a>, wouldn't you agree? Educational, almost. While this title is just about as far from the mainstream MMO eye as can be these days, it's heartening to know it's still out there, still running, and still capable of evoking fond memories from current and former players.<br />
<br />
While we did attempt to contact <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">SOE</a> for an interview to see if we could find out anything new -- or even old -- about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/everquest-online-adventures/"><em>EQOA</em></a>, it failed to materialize. As a wonderful consolation prize, however, this week we'll hear from three players who have extensive experience in the game. So let's hit this column running and equip our +2 Ears of Paying Attention!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/22/the-game-archaeologists-excellent-everquest-online-adventures/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist's excellent EverQuest Online Adventures: The memories</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/22/the-game-archaeologists-excellent-everquest-online-adventures/">The Game Archaeologist's excellent EverQuest Online Adventures: The memories</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 22 Nov 2011 14:00:00 EST. To tell you all the truth, the comments from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/08/the-game-archaeologists-excellent-everquest-online-adventures/">last week's initial foray</a> into <a href="http://everquestonlineadventures.station.sony.com/"><em>EverQuest Online Adventures</em></a> bowled me over -- I truly was not expecting so many players to be so passionate about the game! How cool is that? I hope that some of you send me in your <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/everquest-online-adventures/"><em>EQOA</em></a> stories to <a href="mailto:justin@massively.com?subject=EQOA%20memories">justin@massively.com</a> so we can include them in next week's column.<br />
<br />
Today I want to welcome <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Rick-Stonebrook/">Rick "Stoney" Stonebrook</a> to our neck of the Massively woods. I remember finding Stoney's <em>EQOA </em>blog over a year ago and being so impressed that there was someone out there regularly updating a blog about this low-profile MMO. Stoney agreed to an interview about the game from a player's and blogger's perspective, so here goes!<br />
<br />
<strong>The Game Archaeologist: Please introduce yourself and your blog! Why did you start blogging about <em>EQOA</em>?</strong><br />
<br />
<strong>Stoney:</strong> Well, I'm 24 and have lived in a lot of places in the past few years. I adopted the name Stoney when I started the blog, <a href="http://eqoa.wordpress.com/">eqoa.wordpress.com</a>, in October 2010. The purpose for the blog was simple: compile as much information about the game as I could find using various search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and YouTube. I hadn't played since 2005 and wasn't familiar with any new content. I had always wanted to return to the game. Thus the blog's goal evolved from a collection of memories to an effort to get people to return.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/15/the-game-archaeologists-excellent-everquest-online-adventures/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist's excellent EverQuest Online Adventures: The blogger</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/15/the-game-archaeologists-excellent-everquest-online-adventures/">The Game Archaeologist's excellent EverQuest Online Adventures: The blogger</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 15 Nov 2011 17:00:00 EST. In the pantheon of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">Sony Online Entertainment's</a> flagship <a href="http://www.everquest.com/"><em>EverQuest</em></a> franchise, there is a whole family of MMOs gathered around the table every evening. There's Papa <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest/"><em>EverQuest</em></a>, looking a little wrinkled and worn but also radiating fame and authority. Next to him is Mama <a href="http://everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>, a powerful matron of entertainment if there ever was one. They look proudly down the table at a bassinet where Baby <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/everquest-next/"><em>EverQuest Next</em></a> lies, cooing as it grows into the future generation of this family.<br />
<br />
Then, in the next room over is a cabinet. The cabinet is locked. Inside that cabinet is a weird abnormality that certainly looks like a member of the family, but he hasn't seen the light of day in quite some time. He subsists on the scraps of an aging console and the fading loyalty of fans, hoping against odds that one day he'll be allowed out for a stroll or something. His name is Cousin <a href="http://everquestonlineadventures.station.sony.com/"><em>EverQuest Online Adventures</em></a>, the <em>EQ </em>MMO nobody mentions.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/everquest-online-adventures/"><em>EQOA</em></a> is a strange abnormality in SOE's lineup. While it was one of the very first console MMOs and heir to the <em>EverQuest </em>name, it was quickly eclipsed in both areas by other games and left alone. Yet, against all odds, it continues to operate on the PlayStation 2, eight years and counting since its debut.<br />
<br />
This month <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-game-archaeologist/">the Game Archaeologist</a> will crack open that cabinet and give this interesting MMO a few weeks of attention and care. I think it's about time, don't you?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/08/the-game-archaeologists-excellent-everquest-online-adventures/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist's excellent EverQuest Online Adventures: The highlights</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/08/the-game-archaeologists-excellent-everquest-online-adventures/">The Game Archaeologist's excellent EverQuest Online Adventures: The highlights</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 08 Nov 2011 20:00:00 EST. As a long-time movie buff, I've always been fascinated by sequels. I know, they have a terrible reputation and everyone gets this face like he's digesting a porcupine when discussing them, but there's something fun about them as well. I think we always want a good story to continue, to see what happens next, and to answer the question, "What would the first film be like if it were put in the hands of a complete boob?" It would be an entertaining trainwreck, that's what.<br />
<br />
Even though the MMORPG genre is in its toddler stage, it's seen a number of sequels, prequels and spin-offs, just the same as other types of entertainment. Video game sequels for hit titles are safer financial investments than striking out into new territory, so it makes sense that MMO studios would follow this pattern as well.<br />
<br />
Right now there are loads of MMO sequels and spin-offs in the works -- including <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next/"><em>EverQuest Next</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/planetside-next/"><em>PlanetSide Next</em></a>, <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com/en/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mabinogi-2/"><em>Mabinogi 2</em></a>, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/maplestory-2/">MapleStory 2</a>, <a href="http://pso2.jp/alpha/">Phantasy Star Online 2</a>, <a href="http://www.dust514.org/">Dust 514</a></em>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/30/rumor-a-new-ultima-mmo-might-be-in-the-works/">even a possible <em>Ultima Online</em> sequel</a> -- so it's safe to say that the trend won't be dying down anytime soon. However, today I want to look at 10 sequels that already made it to release and briefly examine how they stacked up to their predecessors. Oh yes, there will be blood after the jump -- and I will drink your milkshake!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/19/the-perfect-ten-sequelitis/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Perfect Ten: Sequelitis</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/19/the-perfect-ten-sequelitis/">The Perfect Ten: Sequelitis</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 19 May 2011 11:30:00 EST. With the first month of <a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> now in the past, the time has come for that all-important MMO decision -- is the game worth renewing? For some, the answer is no. The first major patch still has not dropped; it's meant to offer us many fixes and the new content we've been told is coming. Some players have hit the level cap and aren't interested in leveling alts or doing endgame content. Whatever each person's reason may be, the shine is wearing off for some. <br />
<br />
Meanwhile, <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/hal-halpin">Hal Halpin</a>, President of the Entertainment Consumer's Association, recently <a href="http://www.ign.com/blogs/halhalpin/2011/02/16/dcuniverse/">wrote a piece</a> that presented another reason that some may not be renewing: Console gamers are feeling that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SonyOnlineEntertainment/">Sony Online Entertainment</a> has been less than open about the game's being locked to a single account. Many are upset about not being able to trade <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/DC-Universe-Online/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> in for another game now that their free month is up. His reasoning? "<em>The problem, of course, is that console games are sold and the ownership conveyed, along with rights</em>." There's only one flaw in that statement: This isn't anything new -- not even on consoles.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/19/alter-ego-dcuos-console-conundrum/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Alter-Ego: DCUO's console conundrum</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/19/alter-ego-dcuos-console-conundrum/">Alter-Ego: DCUO's console conundrum</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 19 Feb 2011 12:00:00 EST. The times in <a href="http://www.playonline.com"><em>Final Fantasy XI</em></a> are changing, it seems, with the advent of an early February mini-patch serving as a sign of same. That's hardly the only thing players have questions about, but <a href="http://www.playonline.com/pcd/topics/ff11us/detail/6166/detail.html">the most recent dispatch from the development team</a> focuses primarily upon what the mini-patch will bring. Still, the improved communication goes across the board, discussing details of future updates and other system changes as well as some requested features that will have to remain omitted.<br />
<br />
New auto-translate phrases, for instance, are something that the team would like to implement but can't due to PS2 hardware limitations. The pattern for version update files, however, is being changed to better accommodate the same hardware limitations, saving the machine from having to download the full update and then apply the files one by one. Perhaps most heartening to veteran players, experience gains will be adjusted outside of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Abyssea/">Abyssea</a> to try to ease the gap between the add-on scenarios and the rest of the world. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Final-Fantasy-XI/">Final Fantasy XI</a></em> players can take a look at <a href="http://www.playonline.com/pcd/topics/ff11us/detail/6166/detail.html">the full list of questions</a> and get ready for the version update in early February.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/31/another-batch-of-final-fantasy-xi-answers-for-players/">Another batch of Final Fantasy XI answers for players</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 31 Jan 2011 21:00:00 EST. If you asked <a href="http://www.playonline.com"><em>Final Fantasy XI</em></a> players to describe the usual nature of the development team, "taciturn" might be thrown around, as would "mute" and "uncommunicative" and "sadistic." Which makes <a href="http://www.playonline.com/pcd/topics/ff11us/detail/6109/detail.html">the newest dispatch from the development team</a> uncharacteristic in many ways, because it represents a heretofore uncommon level of transparency from the team. Addressing several topics that arose from the December version update, the full sessions of questions and answers includes a number of interesting tidbits for players.<br />
<br />
One of the stated goals within the dispatch is that the team wishes to have the widest variety of players able to access the widest variety of content, an attitude that hasn't always seemed to be at the forefront of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Square-Enix/">Square-Enix</a>'s priorities. There's also a promise to make Pet Food Eta easier to create and a quick discussion of the numerous hard drive problems noted for PlayStation 2 players. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Final-Fantasy-XI/">Final Fantasy XI</a></em> players should take a look at <a href="http://www.playonline.com/pcd/topics/ff11us/detail/6109/detail.html">the full set of questions</a>, hopefully heralding an upswing in communications.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/23/the-development-team-of-final-fantasy-xi-shares-insights-with-pl/">The development team of Final Fantasy XI shares insights with players</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 23 Dec 2010 10:00:00 EST. My original plan for this week was to step <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/14/the-mog-log-experiment-rhio/">back into the experiment with soloing</a> that I started in <a href="http://www.playonline.com"><em>Final Fantasy XI</em></a> what feels like an eternity ago, but the recent updates about <a href="http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a>'s market system prompted a comment that interested me. A reader noted that the auction block in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Final-Fantasy-XI/"><em>Final Fantasy XI</em></a> was partly responsible for the enormous gilselling issue that's plagued the game more or less since its release stateside, with the theory going that the market wards and so forth in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Final-Fantasy-XIV/"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a> were a specific response to this.<br />
<br />
It seems fitting, in light of all of the gilselling issues that we've gone through in Vana'diel, to take a look at the sordid history of the currency in the game and at how likely it is to translate to the new kid on the block. I don't think the problem lies so much with the sellers as with the environment that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Square-Enix/">Square-Enix</a> unintentionally created, as well as with the perfect storm of circumstances that devalued the currency of the game to near-worthlessness with no alternatives. That's right -- it's time to look back six years or so to the launch of the game in the U.S.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/02/the-mog-log-gil-rules-everything-around-me/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Mog Log: Gil rules everything around me</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/02/the-mog-log-gil-rules-everything-around-me/">The Mog Log: Gil rules everything around me</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 02 Oct 2010 18:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.playonline.com"><em>Final Fantasy XI</em></a> isn't just one of the only console MMOs in existence, it's also the most successful of the lot, due in part to the wide spread of available platforms. Since the game has long been playable on the Xbox, there were several <a href="http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a> fans (or Xbox 360 owners) hoping it would eventually come out on that console as well. But it's not happening, and according to <a href="http://www.ffxivcore.com/topic/8174-points-of-interest-from-4players-interview/?s=a447e8574bb1b2277d2057fbd0bd97f7">a recently translated interview</a> <a href="http://www.4players.de/4players.php/dispbericht/Allgemein/Interview/17343/68833/0/Final_Fantasy_XIV_Online.html">from 4players.de</a>, the reason rests squarely with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Microsoft/">Microsoft</a>.<br />
<br />
When asked in an interview why <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Final-Fantasy-XIV/"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a> wasn't appearing on Microsoft's console, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Hiromichi-Tanaka/">Hiromichi Tanaka</a> explained that Microsoft was unwilling to work with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Square-Enix/">Square-Enix</a> to deal with the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Xbox-Live/">Xbox Live</a> setup. As he put it, it seemed the company made a one-time exception with <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Final-Fantasy-XI/">Final Fantasy XI</a></em> to get the console in people's minds as an online platform, but now that it's established the gates are closed. There are currently no plans to adapt the game for the console, but it will still be <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/30/final-fantasy-xiv-announces-launch-date-and-pricing-model/">coming out for the PC in late September</a>, with a Playstation 3 release due at some point after that. Getting started with <a href="http://www.playonline.com"><em>Final Fantasy XI</em></a> can be rather daunting the first time. You might be lucky to have a friend right there holding your hand through the starting areas... or you might accidentally wind up vendoring several thousand gil worth of items because you didn't properly grasp how the auction house works. Or you might throw away a bunch of zinc ore <a href="http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Shady_Business">because it's taking up too much space</a>. Or you might put yourself on everyone's blacklist by accidentally locking your chat mode in /yell.<br />
<br />
You can draw whatever conclusions you want about my early memories of the game. They're not pretty.<br />
<br />
Assuming you've mastered moving, the basics of looking around in your inventory and interacting with NPCs, and so forth, it's not always immediately evident what you're supposed to do, what the best job for a starter character is supposed to be, and so on. Thus, for those of you newly interested in the game, we have a small guide on some of the less immediately transparent elements of the game. (For those of you who already know <a href="http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Tu%27Lia">Sky</a> and <a href="http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Sea">Sea</a> inside and out, you can skip ahead to the end. I can promise there's something there.)<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/06/the-mog-log-starting-new-in-vanadiel/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Mog Log: Starting new in Vana'diel</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/06/the-mog-log-starting-new-in-vanadiel/">The Mog Log: Starting new in Vana'diel</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 06 Feb 2010 12:00:00 EST. With the news out yesterday that <a href="http://www.championsonline.com"><em>Champions Online</em></a> will <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/11/champions-online-console-launch-will-be-delayed/">not be seeing a launch day release to consoles</a> along with the PC client, we're kind of wondering what's coming for the future of consoles in terms of MMO releases. Sure, there are already a handful of MMOs out there in the space: <a href="http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/index.shtml"><em>Final Fantasy XI</em></a>, <a href="http://phantasystaruniverse.com/"><em>Phantasy Star Universe</em></a>, and <a href="http://everquestonlineadventures.station.sony.com/"><em>EverQuest Online Adventures</em></a>, but they seem to be more the exception than the rule. <a href="http://www.ageofconan.com"><em>Age of Conan</em></a>, promised to be released to consoles shortly after <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/age-of-conan"><em>AoC</em></a>'s PC launch, has been beseiged by setbacks and is now only <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/12/funcom-re-reaffirms-conan-360-in-addition-to-the-secret-world/">rarely mentioned</a> - if at all. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Champions-Online/">Champions Online</a></em> has been set back. <a href="http://freerealms.com"><em>Free Realms</em></a> (and likely the other upcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE/">SOE</a> titles as well), perhaps the strongest potential crossover due to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/13/soe-moved-under-scei-to-strengthen-playstation-3/">SOE being part of SCEA</a>, will still see console release well after the initial PC launch. <br /><br />So with all the delays or largely-vaporware-status of several promised console MMOs, we thought we'd ask you this morning - just exactly how important is it to you, as an MMO gamer, that there are more options for MMOs on the console? Do you look forward to the day when you can get a USB keyboard and hook it into your console, to enjoy a round of MMO gaming from the comfort of your couch? Or does it not really make much of a difference for you, as you'll be at your computer anyway; after all, consoles don't tend to offer the option of alt-tabbing out and checking database sites for item drops, locations, tips and other hints. How important are console MMOs to you?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/12/the-daily-grind-how-important-are-console-mmo-titles-to-you/">The Daily Grind: How important are console MMO titles to you?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 12 Mar 2009 08:00:00 EST. Kaz Hirai of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/sony-computer-entertainment ">Sony Computer Entertainment</a> mentioned in his <a href="http://www.cesweb.org/">Consumer Electronics Show</a> speech that <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/home-downloaded-by-3-4-million">3.4 million PlayStation 3 users</a> have downloaded <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/home"><em>Home</em></a>. It was, however, announced too early according to key members of the <em>Home</em> team in an interview with <a href="http://www.developmag.com">Develop</a>.<br /><br />Announcing <em>Home</em> back at the 2007 <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc">Game Developer's Conference</a> had the effect of stoking the interest of third parties (not to mention gamers and virtual world residents), but there was no where to run with their projects, given the early stage of <em>Home</em>'s development at that time. Indeed, <em>Hom</em>e's Game Director Peter Edward feels that initially some developers were reluctant to get involved, but that situation is beginning to change. Edward says, <em>"The feedback we've been getting is that, in the early days, it was a bit thin on the ground in terms of support and tools, but now it's mature and everybody's starting to produce some really interesting stuff."</em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/10/despite-3-4-million-downloads-playstation-home-announced-too-ea/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Despite 3.4 million downloads, PlayStation Home announced too early</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/10/despite-3-4-million-downloads-playstation-home-announced-too-ea/">Despite 3.4 million downloads, PlayStation Home announced too early</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 10 Jan 2009 19:30:00 EST. While some of the older PS3 models boasted PlayStation 2 emulation, moving forward gamers purchasing the PlayStation 3 <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/26/tabulator-comparing-the-playstation-3-skus/ ">won't enjoy this backwards compatibility</a>.<br /><br />Given this limitation, and the simple fact that many gamers are leaving the PS2 behind as they look ahead, why hasn't <em>Final Fantasy XI</em> migrated to the PS3? You'd envision this being the logical next step for the title, particularly given the new breed of console-based MMOs coming to PS3 -- namely, superhero MMO <a href="http://dcuo.station.sony.com/"><span style="font-style: italic;">DC Universe Online</span></a>, spy-centric <a href="http://theagency.station.sony.com/"><span style="font-style: italic;">The Agency</span></a>, and of course <a href="http://www.freerealms.com/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Free Realms</span></a>. As it turns out, <a href="http://www.square-enix.com/na/">Square Enix</a> <em>did</em> intend to move up to the PS3, according to a recent report from <a href="http://www.1up.com/do/my1Up?publicUserId=4547494">Kris Pigna</a> over at <a href="http://www.1up.com">1UP</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/08/no-love-for-final-fantasy-xi-on-ps3/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>No love for Final Fantasy XI on PS3</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/08/no-love-for-final-fantasy-xi-on-ps3/">No love for Final Fantasy XI on PS3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 08 Dec 2008 18:00:00 EST. And that's it. The only MMO currently thought to be planned for release on both PC and console (though not at launch) is <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/age-of-conan/">Age of Conan</a></em> for the 360. Why is there such a dearth of console MMOs?<br /><br />Many will say that it's because MMOs are so complex and rich that they cannot be managed with a console controller, and that's partly true -- imagine playing <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft/">World of Warcraft</a></em> with a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dualshock">DualShock</a> -- but that's more of a design issue. A game meant for consoles, rather than one ported over from the PC, should have such limitations in mind. There's also the closed environment of the console, which is harder to plan patches for, and the still-in-its-infancy online service for the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft">three</a> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony">major</a> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo">brands</a>. On the bright side, there would be no need to worry about system specs; every player would be getting the same experience. And there could be added value in game <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Achievements#Gamerscore">achievements</a>, which is a system that doesn't currently exist for PC MMOs.<br /><br />Are there more reasons against console MMOs than there are for them? Should developers bother with the consoles at all?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/19/the-daily-grind-why-arent-there-more-console-mmos/">The Daily Grind: Why aren't there more console MMOs?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 19 Apr 2008 08:00:00 EST. As you're probably already aware, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Sony-Online-Entertainment/">Sony Online Entertainment</a> has come out with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/10/30/everquest-halloween-event-live-today-late-start-due-to-fires/">a number</a> of seasonal activities to entertain and delight players in nearly all of their MMOs. Lest it be lost in the shuffle, we thought we'd clue you in on a peculiarly timed event going on in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/everquest-online-adventures/"><em>EverQuest Online Adventures</em></a>, the obscure EQ offshoot available only on the Playstation 2.<br /><br />The <em>EQOA</em> crew has revealed that their Fishing Season event <a href="http://www.soepress.com/release.asp?i=152">officially started yesterday</a>, and will run through November 15th. Players cast their rods far and wide in search of special "tagged fish" which can be turned into NPCs for special "certificates of participation." At the end of each week, a GM will bestow a prize on the player who has collected the most certificates for a given week. What is the prize you ask? They don't actually say. For the sake of those PS2 hold-outs still playing <em>EQOA</em> on the ol' Playstation 2, how about a <a href="http://www.ps3fanboy.com/">PS3</a>?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/01/everquest-online-adventures-fishing-event-announced/">EverQuest Online Adventures has gone fishin'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 01 Nov 2007 17:35:00 EST.
