For this latest <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook">Tattered Notebook</a>, I'd already planned -- and in fact was in the middle of -- writing impressions of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/scars-of-the-awakened/"><em>Scars of the Awakened</em></a>, <em><a href="https://www.everquest2.com/">EverQuest II's</a></em> most recent meaty update. I've collected a slew of notes taken from the adventurer and crafter questlines, including some tips and time-saving tricks. But amidst all that intense update research (I gladly sacrifice myself for you guys!), I got distracted. And no, it wasn't by a shiny!<br />
<br />
You see, although the land of Cobalt Scar opened up just over a month ago, I've been pulled away and unable to complete everything I want to in that zone. Why? Because in that same time, there have been multiple city festivals, a round of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/18/tattered-notebook-a-guide-to-eqiis-moonlight-enchantments-an/">Moonlight Enchantments</a> (with new quests and brand-new housing items that were a must have), a double XP weekend that just begged for some serious crafting advancement, a commissioned housing project to complete, personal houses to decorate, old quests to finally finish up... and that was just to start!<br />
<br />
As the guilt for not finishing the entirety of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GU66/">GU66</a> settled in, friends who weren't as high-level as I wanted to play together in areas they had access to, which coincidentally did not include the latest update. So off I ran through older zones and dungeons with lower-leveled friends. Needless to say, my in-game adventures of late have stretched all over the map of Norrath. Sounds busy, no? It was during all this that I had to finally lay my delusions of finishing everything I have planned before <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next">EverQuest Next</a></em> to rest; there's just too much to do in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EQII</em></a>!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/08/tattered-notebook-theres-too-much-to-do-in-everquest-ii/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tattered Notebook: There's too much to do in EverQuest II!</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/08/tattered-notebook-theres-too-much-to-do-in-everquest-ii/">Tattered Notebook: There's too much to do in EverQuest II!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 08 Jun 2013 18:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gu66/">Game Update 66</a> for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> is ready to dominate April, and <a href="https://www.everquest2.com/news/article?month=042013&amp;id=51621">SOE has opened the beta gates</a> for testers to give the new content and features a try. All <em>EverQuest II</em> players are allowed into the beta, so you can see what it's all about if you're so interested. The studio put a few disclaimers on the beta, such as the fact that it might be unavailable at times and is subject to being wiped.<br />

Do you have the chops to create captivating homes in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>? If so, you might be raking in the bucks very soon. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">SOE</a> announced that <a href="http://forums.station.sony.com/eq2/index.php?threads/player-studio-houses-coming-big-decorating-sale-too.5632/">it will begin to test the sale of player studio houses</a> in the beta for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/12/eqiis-scars-of-the-awakened-update-is-coming-on-april-30th/">GU66</a>.<br />
<br />
The team is creating tools, including a new web site, to aid with the sale and purchase of these homes. To encourage interest in sprucing up that old shack, SOE is running a sale on decorations and houses from tomorrow through next Thursday. All decorations will be at least 50% off, the studio promises.<br />
<br />
The test begins on April 2nd. SOE says that it wants to get the studio houses out along with GU66 on April 30th.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/21/everquest-ii-tests-the-sale-of-player-created-houses/">EverQuest II tests the sale of player-created houses</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 21 Mar 2013 19:00:00 EST. Back when <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/player-studio">Player Studio</a> first introduced the idea of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/23/soe-live-2012-building-your-business-and-selling-homes-with-pla/">adding player-created items for sale</a> in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>EverQuest II's</em></a> cash shop, only housing items and cloaks could be submitted. However, players were promised that more items would be allowed in time. Well, break out your Blender, because that time is now! Fans with a creative streak can now submit personally designed hairstyles, weapons, and shields for consideration and possible inclusion in the game.<br />
<br />
Currently, hairstyles for only elves and humans can be submitted and must be shoulder-length or above. For weapons, various one- and two-handed stances are all possible, with the notable exception of caster staffs. Instructions, models, and samples are provided on the <a href="https://www.everquest2.com/player-studio/get-started">official site</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/28/eqii-player-studio-challenges-players-to-end-bad-hair-days/">EQII Player Studio challenges players to end bad hair days</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 28 Feb 2013 16:30:00 EST. As the year comes to a close, it's really amazing to look back and follow the twisty path of <a href="http://everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II's</em></a> evolution. This past year in particular stood out for me because the first half was marked by unconventional (some would say radical) ideas that broke away from the <a href="http://everquest.com"><em>EverQuest</em></a> tradition. The second half, though, revealed a return to the game's roots, and to what longtime players associate with the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest/">EQ</a> </em>franchise.<br />
<br />
In fact, when I look back even further, there are many things I've really come to appreciate in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EQII</em></a>, and I miss them when I'm playing other MMOs that don't have them. So in this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook/">Tattered Notebook</a>, I'm meeting up with the <em>EQII </em>ghosts of Frostfell past, present, and future to look at what I love most about the game and what I want to see in the game as we approach 2013.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/12/29/the-tattered-notebook-my-eqii-journey-with-the-ghosts-of-frostf/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: My EQII journey with the ghosts of Frostfell</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/12/29/the-tattered-notebook-my-eqii-journey-with-the-ghosts-of-frostf/">The Tattered Notebook: My EQII journey with the ghosts of Frostfell</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 29 Dec 2012 16:00:00 EST. Just a few days ago, <a href="http://soe.com">SOE</a> launched the first wave of items submitted by players through <a href="https://player-studio.soe.com/">Player Studio</a>. <a href="http://everquest.com"><em>EverQuest</em></a>, <a href="http://everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>, and <a href="http://freerealms.com"><em>Free Realms</em></a> all have player-made items for sale in the Marketplace; the players who created the items receive 40% of the revenue. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest/"><em>EverQuest</em></a> launched its first player-made weapon, the Stormlord's Bludgeon; <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> featured the Heroic Salesman's Chest and Cloak of the North Star; and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/free-realms/"><em>Free Realms</em></a> revealed the Swirly Railed Gazebo and Happy Heart T-Shirt.<br />
<br />
We had a chance to talk to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/rick-reynolds">Rick Reynolds</a>, Senior Manager of SOE's E-Commerce team, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/joe-shoopack">Joe Shoopack</a>, Director of Artistic Development, both of whom have played key roles in the successful launch of Player Studio. They shared insight into what goes on behind the scenes after a player submits an item, and they hinted at future plans for the system. During <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE-Live-2012/">SOE Live</a>, we got a more <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/23/soe-live-2012-building-your-business-and-selling-homes-with-pla/">in-depth look</a> at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/sony-online-entertainment/">Sony Online Entertainment's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/player-studio">Player Studio</a>, a new feature where players can design items to be sold to others in game via the marketplace. Today, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest">EverQuest</a></em>, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii">EverQuest II</a></em>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/free-realms"><em>Free Realms</em></a> will see some of those player-created items go live!<br />
<br />
When checking the in-game store today, <em>EverQuest II</em> players will find the cloak of the North Star and the heroic salesman's crate. <em>Free Realms</em> fans will get to choose a swirly-railed gazebo or a happy heart T-shirt. In <em>EverQuest</em>, hammer users will have a new skin they can slap on their weapon.<br />
<br />
Although this first wave of Player Studio items is not very extensive for any of the games, SOE has over 60 other trinkets spread across the three games ready to go, and more stuff will be introduced each week. Be sure to check the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook">Tattered Notebook</a> this Saturday for even more details and an interview with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/rick-reynolds">Rick Reynolds</a>, SOE's Senior Manager of E-Commerce and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/joe-shoopack">Joe Shoopack</a>, Director of Artistic Development!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/12/13/soe-launching-first-player-studio-items-for-eq-eq-ii-free-real/">SOE launching first Player Studio items for EQ, EQ II, Free Realms</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 13 Dec 2012 10:00:00 EST. The tug-o-war in the MMO community between the virtues of sandbox vs. themepark designs looks like it's starting to result in a muddy heap in the middle: the sandpark. Personally, I think there are wonderful aspects of both designs (and drawbacks too), and a marriage between the two could offer more player freedom and creativity while keeping it structured and balanced.<br />
<br />
So I've been thinking about <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> in regard to this and how it might benefit from a greater number of sandbox features in the future. I mean, on one hand we have one of the most "on rails" PvE games out there, but on the other hand there are seeds of great player freedom. Elements like the music system, the Winter-home theater, Hytbold, and the quite robust crafting system all serve to take us a step beyond the themepark.<br />
<br />
But what if <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online"><em>LotRO</em></a> took a few more steps toward sandboxy goodness? Seeing as how <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/21/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-what-ifs-middle-earth-online/">the original vision for the game</a> was to make it a pure sandbox, I think that's not too farfetched a question. Here are several sandbox features that I think if married to the game would add to its appeal and variety.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/11/24/the-road-to-mordor-sandbox-features-that-would-serve-lotro-well/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Road to Mordor: Sandbox features that would serve LotRO well</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/11/24/the-road-to-mordor-sandbox-features-that-would-serve-lotro-well/">The Road to Mordor: Sandbox features that would serve LotRO well</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 24 Nov 2012 12:00:00 EST. Everyone loves to scream for "more innovation!" at any given opportunity, but this is often done with blinders on to the studios that actually are trying to push MMOs forward -- even if in small and important measures.<br />
<br />
While studios are risk-adverse by nature and common sense, they've also learned the hard way that clinging too much to the familiar can drive away more players than not. So innovation, like it or not, is the path to survival in an increasingly competitive field.<br />
<br />
Today I'd love it if we took the blinders off and gave credit where it's due. Which MMO studio is the most innovative? Is it <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">SOE</a>, with its initiatives like the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/player-studio">Player Studio</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soemote">SOEmotes</a>? Would you give <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> the hat tip for creating a new breed of MMO? Or perhaps <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard">Blizzard</a> for... OK, I can't finish that sentence. What say you?<br />

We've all had that moment. In your mind's eye, you see the perfect item; whether you are a decorator or adventurer, you've imagined that one item that would look perfect in your <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii">EverQuest II</a></em> house or on your <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest"><em>EverQuest</em></a> character. But alas, since you aren't on the development team, your awesome idea could not be realized. That was then; this is now. With the new <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/player-studio/">Player Studio</a> announced <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/09/06/create-and-sell-your-own-in-game-items-with-soes-player-studi/">last month</a>, that idea can not only come to fruition but net you some cold hard cash as well.<br />
<br />
So how does one transition from imaginer to bustling entrepreneur? Devs hosted a panel at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE-Live-2012/">SOE Live 2012</a> that discussed the steps of getting an item from your mind's eye out into the Marketplace for others to buy and enjoy. But what if instead of imagining new items, you take existing items and create incredible displays that are the envy of others? Devs announced a feature that will allow decorators to fully furnish a home, bundle it up, and offer it for sale via the Marketplace as well.<br />
<br />
After the informative panel, I caught up with Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/holly-longdale/">Holly Longdale</a> and director of of the <em>EQ</em> franchise <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dave-georgeson">Dave Georgeson</a> to uncover even more details about the opportunities available with Player Studio.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/23/soe-live-2012-building-your-business-and-selling-homes-with-pla/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>SOE Live 2012: Building your business and selling homes with Player Studio</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/23/soe-live-2012-building-your-business-and-selling-homes-with-pla/">SOE Live 2012: Building your business and selling homes with Player Studio</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 23 Oct 2012 20:00:00 EST. <div>
	User-generated content is an awesome way to breathe life into games (and cash into your wallet, if you don't mind stretching that metaphor to the breaking point). <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">Sony Online Entertainment</a>'s <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/player-studio">Player Studio</a> has been generating interest since its introduction as a way for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest">EverQuest</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii">EverQuest II</a></em>, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/free-realms">Free Realms</a>, </em>and (eventually) <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/vanguard"><em>Vanguard</em></a> players to create and sell their own in-game items.<br />
	<br />
	In response to that interest, SOE's most recent <a href="http://www.twitch.tv/soe/b/334449227">community webcast</a> focuses the spotlight on the Player Studio, with input from Director of Artistic Development Joe Shoopack, Sr. Manager of E-Commerce Rick Reynolds, and Global Community Relations Director Linda Carlson. Together, they talk players through the idea of the Player Studio and its origins in the wealth of fanart and persistent excitement about the games involved, what sort of effort will go into making items, and the magical journey that a submission undertakes before it emerges as a full-fledged, purchasable asset.<br />
	<br />
	While some of the initial item possibilities are still being nailed down, players can expect to be able to submit housing items, weapons, and shields for <em>EQ</em>, cloaks and housing items for <em>EQII</em>, and similar items for the other games.<br />
	<br />

Talk about a busy week for the <a href="http://everquest.com"><em>EverQuest</em></a> franchise! In a one-two punch, <a href="http://soe.com">SOE</a> announced new expansions for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest/"><em>EverQuest</em></a> and <a href="http://everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> and unveiled <a href="http://www.soe.com/player-studio/">Player Studio</a>, a new tool that will allow players to create and sell their own items on the marketplace. I went from "what shall I write about this week" to "where do I begin?!"<br />
<br />
The expansions deserve attention in their own right, plus they're still a ways off from being released, so in this week's column, I'd like to look at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/09/06/create-and-sell-your-own-in-game-items-with-soes-player-studi/">Player Studio</a> with an eye on <em>EQ's</em> past. In the history of the franchise, user-generated content has been around for a long time, as has open-ended gameplay. Both seem to be making a return to <em>EQ</em> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii">EQII</a>, and I'll say it's long overdue.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/09/08/the-tattered-notebook-why-player-studio-is-actually-a-return-t/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Why Player Studio is actually a return to EQ's roots</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/09/08/the-tattered-notebook-why-player-studio-is-actually-a-return-t/">The Tattered Notebook: Why Player Studio is actually a return to EQ's roots</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 08 Sep 2012 16:00:00 EST. Not to be outdone by the news of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>EverQuest II's</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/09/06/everquest-iis-chains-of-eternity-expansion-slated-for-november/">new expansion</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">SOE's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/09/06/create-and-sell-your-own-in-game-items-with-soes-player-studi/">Player Studio</a>, faithful ol' <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest">EverQuest</a></em> is muscling its way back into the spotlight with its 19th expansion, titled <a href="http://www.everquest.com/expansions"><em>Rain of Fear</em></a>.<br />
<br />
<em>Rain of Fear</em> picks up the story from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/house-of-thule"><em>House of Thule</em></a>, where nasty shards of power are falling from the sky and becoming ripe for the taking. Players will hop across the world to gather these shards and prevent their use by evil forces.<br />
<br />
Of course, if you're more into numbers than story, you'll be interested to hear that the expansion will raise the level cap to an even 100, add nine zones, 13 raids, 110 quests, and 1800 new spells. SOE also plans to institute an aggro meter, new collection and hunter tasks, fun titles, and an autonomous brokering system to boost the player economy.<br />
<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>EverQuest II's</em></a> new expansion reared its head earlier today, as did the latest content drop for the original <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest"><em>EverQuest</em></a>. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">Sony Online Entertainment</a> didn't stop there, though. The firm has unveiled something called <a href="http://www.soe.com/player-studio/">SOE Player Studio</a>, which is a new endeavor designed to give creative customers a way to develop their own <a href="http://www.everquest2.com/player-studio">in-game items</a>.<br />
<br />
While user-generated content has been a staple in SOE titles for many years, Player Studio is different because it's built on a for-profit foundation.<br />
<br />
Players may "download sample geometry for actual in-game objects and through the use of third party art tools, learn how to develop, design and personalize items of their own." After an item passes the SOE approval process, it can be purchased by other players in the SOE Marketplace. Player content authors will then receive 40 percent of the net amount that SOE receives from the sale.<br />
<br />
The service will initially cover both <em>EQ</em> and <em>EQII</em>. SOE's website says Player Studio is coming soon for both <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/vanguard"><em>Vanguard</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/free-realms"><em>Free Realms</em></a>.<br />
