It's been a little over a month since <a href="http://nw.perfectworld.com/"><em>Neverwinter</em></a> soft-launched as a no-wipe open beta. Perhaps some folks are holding off until the "official" launch to play it, but I wager that most anyone who is interested in this game is already leveling up like mad.<br />
<br />
I always think that the one-month mark is a good time to pause for evaluation. There's just too much drama and over-excitement and new car smell that goes on during the first week to keep a level head, so first impressions can be tainted by an atmosphere that will soon settle down. But 30 days seems like a good span of time to get a feel for how <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/neverwinter/"><em>Neverwinter</em></a> is doing, how it's being received by the community, and what needs addressing.<br />
<br />
I've been playing every day since the soft launch, although two re-rolls because of guild/server conflicts means that I haven't achieved the level cap the way that some players have. Still, there's no shortage to my opinions on what I like and dislike about this title, but I'll see if I can sum up the salient points for you today.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/12/neverwinter-days-a-one-month-evaluation/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Neverwinter Days: A one-month evaluation</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/12/neverwinter-days-a-one-month-evaluation/">Neverwinter Days: A one-month evaluation</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 12 Jun 2013 13:30:00 EST. At times over the last half decade, I've felt as if the MMORPG genre lost sight of itself. It seemed that all any gamemaker wanted to do was emulate a certain wildly successful outlier, and this in turn threw a wet blanket over the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/sandbox">sandbox play</a>, emergent design, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/player-generated-content">player-generated content</a> that separates MMOs from run-of-the-mill video games.<br />
<br />
The last year or so has seen the collective industry start to wake up from that bad dream, as there are now <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/12/some-assembly-required-your-guide-to-mmo-sandboxes-in-2013-and/">a half dozen</a> really promising sandbox or sandpark titles in development, several of which are backed by millions of dollars and major studios.<br />
<br />
What about the current crop of games, though? Is it a stretch to imagine a few of them, even the unapologetically linear ones, expanding their horizons with a little bit of player-generated content?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/07/some-assembly-required-three-games-that-need-player-generated-c/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Some Assembly Required: Three games that need player-generated content</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/07/some-assembly-required-three-games-that-need-player-generated-c/">Some Assembly Required: Three games that need player-generated content</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 07 Jun 2013 18:00:00 EST. Starting today, warriors in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/allods-online/">Allods Online's</a></em> guild versus guild territory battles will have new mechanics at their disposal. These new battle mechanics include the ability to set a battle time to improve the organization and coordination of military campaigns as well as a new tournament-based league for sectors. Additionally, a new matchmaking system aims to keep things balanced and fair by using an improved battle points calculation that allows guilds to challenge others with similar power and skill levels.<br />
<br />
On top of those changes, players with their own allod can now <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/allods-online-introduces-new-dungeon-building-tool/">create a dungeon</a> to hide their treasures in a customizable maze that plunderers will have to successfully navigate.<br />
<br />
Need another reason to log in and check things out? How about this: <em>Allods Online</em> is offering a special event called A Gift a Day. Starting today, each day a player logs in, s/he will receive a gift. Prizes can include exclusive new costumes and a brand-new wolf mount. If you need any more coaxing, check out new images in the gallery below and the update's trailer after the cut.<br />

Much ado has certainly been made lately about doing something "new and different" in games. Just take a look at all the options coming through <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/kickstarter/">Kickstarter</a> lately; even more contenders have thrown their hats into the ring since our <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/01/some-assembly-required-kick-start-ing-the-sandbox-genre-into-hi/">roundup last February</a>. But in a large number of these cases, the new ideas are coming from developers within the gaming industry. So what would happen if a game were developed from outside the industry?<br />
<br />
Enter <em><a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/nerdkingdom/tug-1">TUG</a></em>. Formally known as <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tug">The Untitled Game</a></em>, the game is the brainchild of <a href="http://nerdkingdom.com/">Nerd Kingdom</a>, a group hailing from the world of academia that happens to have intersected with gaming. Self-described as "a collaboration of video game developers, academic scientists, modders, and gamers," this group wants to move beyond just improving the way games are made "to show[ing] that such games can make us better as individuals and as a society."<br />
<br />
I was able to catch up with one of the founders of Nerd Kingdom, Scientist and Researcher of Stuffs <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Peter-Salinas/">Peter Salinas</a>, to talk about the game. We touched on everything from player design input to features (like player books and companions) to making an engine available for others to use. Oh, and of course, Soylent Green.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/24/some-assembly-required-tug-interview-reveals-the-true-nature-o/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Some Assembly Required: TUG interview reveals the true nature of Soylent Green</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/24/some-assembly-required-tug-interview-reveals-the-true-nature-o/">Some Assembly Required: TUG interview reveals the true nature of Soylent Green</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 24 May 2013 12:00:00 EST. So funny story: In planning out in advance what I wanted to talk about in this biweekly <a href="http://nw.perfectworld.com"><em>Neverwinter</em></a> column, I had selected something that recently caught my eye about the game and made me happy. That something was the<em> </em><a href="https://gateway.playneverwinter.com/"><em>Neverwinter</em> Gateway</a>, a web portal that allows out-of-game players the ability to fiddle with their character sheets, auctions, professions, guilds, and mail. I thought -- and I still do -- that this was a nifty service that deserved a day in the sun.<br />
<br />
As I was getting set to write that column, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/neverwinter/"><em>Neverwinter's</em></a> economy exploded and then imploded over the course of a weekend, thanks to a nasty exploit that involved, yup, the Gateway. Suddenly my topic had to shift from "isn't this a neat tool?" to "check out what the tools are doing with this tool." Seeing the economy effectively destroyed in a matter of hours and how <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic-studios/">Cryptic Studios</a> dealt with this PR nightmare might be old news at this point, but it's definitely worthy of reflection, analysis, and speculation as to how trust can be rebuilt in this fledgling title.<br />
<br />
Let's get cracking -- we have a lot of ground to cover!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/23/neverwinter-days-the-great-economic-collapse-of-2013/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Neverwinter Days: The great economic collapse of 2013</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/23/neverwinter-days-the-great-economic-collapse-of-2013/">Neverwinter Days: The great economic collapse of 2013</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 23 May 2013 12:00:00 EST. Remember <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/a-mystical-land"><em>A Mystical Land</em></a>? Well, forget about it, at least under that name. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mad-otter">Mad Otter</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/neonga">Neonga</a> have sent out a press release announcing that the title is now called <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/villagers-and-heroes"><em>Villagers &amp; Heroes</em></a> in an effort to "better match the content and focus of the game."<br />
<br />
The name change isn't the only change, either, as gameplay has been upgraded by the addition of player-created custom gear, new realms to explore, and new epic bosses.<br />
<br />
Animal ranching is a thing now, too, so you can raise sheep, chicken, and pigs alongside those crops in your backyard. Additional improvements are planned for future updates, and <em>Villagers &amp; Heroes</em> is also seeking your approval on <a href="http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=143799783">Steam's Greenlight</a> service.<br />

It's hard to be a fan of <a href="http://www.champions-online.com"><em>Champions Online</em></a> right now. The game has not been in a good state for pretty much any of its life cycle, but as I've discussed previously, its woes have really come into focus lately. It's been a long time since the game really sat down and advanced any sort of story, and it's been even longer since the game offered players something new in the endgame. When <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic/">Cryptic</a> has two other games with lots of ambition and promise, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Champions-Online/">Champions Online</a></em> is left looking like the unwanted sibling.<br />
<br />
Part of the problem is the fact that <em>CO</em> currently has a skeleton crew working on it and a minimal budget. I suspect (without having hard numbers) that it's at the same sort of uneasy place as <a href="https://www.vanguardthegame.com/"><em>Vanguard</em></a> was for a long while -- making just enough money to justify its continued operation while not making enough money for additional development staff. So with all of that in place, what can the game do to prop itself up a bit more without requiring a huge infusion of additional money? How can <em>Champions Online</em> get its act back together?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/a-mild-mannered-reporter-how-champions-online-could-get-its-gro/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A Mild-Mannered Reporter: How Champions Online could get its groove back</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/a-mild-mannered-reporter-how-champions-online-could-get-its-gro/">A Mild-Mannered Reporter: How Champions Online could get its groove back</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 15 May 2013 13:00:00 EST. I've had a strange start with <a href="http://nw.perfectworld.com"><em>Neverwinter</em></a>, to be honest. While I did get in on the 25th with the early-early crowd, shortly thereafter I had to boogie on off to a vacation that canceled out eight days of soft launch gaming time. So even though I got an early start, I'm probably behind many of you -- even those who started on the 30th.<br />
<br />
That's OK; I'm not in a rush. I'm not the type to get into a speed race or feel the compulsion to become an instant expert by the end of week one. My experience so far has been feeling out what <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/neverwinter"><em>Neverwinter</em></a> has to offer, mostly by going through the solo quest line, participating in skirmishes, and queuing up for dungeon runs when time permits. And I'm enjoying myself so far, although I still have that "slightly lost" feeling that comes with exploring a brand-new MMO. I need to learn how to create Foundry missions and I haven't even touched professions yet.<br />
<br />
Maybe you're like me. Maybe you assume that everyone already knows the ins and outs of the game as though he's been playing it for years, while you're an ignorant noob wandering the streets. I don't think you're alone if that's the case, and to help both you and me out, I've done some research to find the top 14 most helpful threads, sites, and articles that all fledgling <em>Neverwinter</em> adventurers should at least skim over.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/neverwinter-days-the-14-guides-you-need-to-read/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Neverwinter Days: The 14 guides you need to read</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/neverwinter-days-the-14-guides-you-need-to-read/">Neverwinter Days: The 14 guides you need to read</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 15 May 2013 10:00:00 EST. Player-created content is coming to <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Allods-Online/">Allods Online</a></em> in the form of a dungeon-building feature that will allow players to generate their own private islands called allods.<br />
<br />
Launching June 5th of this year, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Path-to-Victory/">Path to Victory</a> expansion opens up new private islands that act as customizable labyrinths for other players to explore. In addition to this dungeon-building tool, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Gala-Networks/">Gala Networks</a> is also introducing the Weaponsmith tradeskill and several graphical updates with this patch.<br />
<br />

Have you heard tell about this "Foundry" thingy-ma-bob in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/neverwinter">Neverwinter</a></em>, but you're not exactly sure what it is? Then <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic's</a> latest <a href="http://nw.perfectworld.com/news/?p=882931">dev blog</a> is for you! In it, Foundry producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/rob-overmeyer/">Rob Overmeyer</a> gives a heaping helping of the what, the why, and the how of the fantasy game's player-made content generator.<br />
<br />
Of course the Foundry is a tool for creating stuff. But more than that, Overmeyer emphasizes that "it's a place where your stories come to life." With extensive customization available in the map editors (both internal and external) and dialogue editors (for both people and objects), players can become immersive storytellers. For a look at what's possible, check out Overmeyer's overview. Then jump in game and test it out for yourself.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/13/neverwinter-dev-blog-delves-into-the-foundry/">Neverwinter dev blog delves into the Foundry</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 13 May 2013 13:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic</a> is cracking down on player-created missions <a href="http://nw-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?196582-Exploit-Maps-What-s-the-deal-Who-gets-punished">that utilize certain exploits</a> to gain XP <a href="http://nw-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?205661-New-best-exp-in-the-game-Is-this-an-Exploit-2-3-levels-hr">faster than normal</a> in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/neverwinter"><em>Neverwinter's</em></a> Foundry. While the studio temporarily banned authors for making these missions in the Foundry, it looks as though <a href="http://nw-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?201931-Patch-Notes-NW-1-20130416a-16">a recent patch</a> has addressed the situation by "tweaking" the amount of XP that a player can gain within a set period of time.<br />
<br />
Apparently some Foundry authors had been creating missions designed to pay out the maximum amount of XP by allowing near-nonstop combat. The patch has slowed that rate down by allowing players to earn only so much XP in five minutes before turning off the XP spigot altogether until the time limit is up.<br />
<br />
Players have been reacting <a href="http://nw-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?204491-Foundry-Nerfs">to the Foundry nerf</a> <a href="http://nw-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?206821-Petition-Bring-back-Foundry-EXP">with dismay</a>, particularly <a href="http://nw-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?203581-Worried-about-XP-nerf-IOW-quot-Why-we-can-t-have-nice-things-quot-%29">non-exploit-using authors</a> who feel as though they are being punished with the rest of the class by the XP nerfs (though "legit" farming maps appear to have escaped deletion so far). <a href="http://nw-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?203581-Worried-about-XP-nerf-IOW-quot-Why-we-can-t-have-nice-things-quot-%29&amp;p=2767322&amp;viewfull=1#post2767322">One player noted</a> called this situation an "endless cat and mouse game" that has happened in other similar systems.<br />

One of <a href="http://www.thesecretworld.com/"><em>The Secret World's</em></a> most unique elements makes it ripe for producing immersive experiences, even outside of the game. Set in the modern real world (as opposed to the fantasy or even sci-fi themes prevalent in our MMOverse), a game can more easily blur the line between logged in and logged out. Players can, and do, generate ways to be a part of the game while still out and about in the real world. Today, I'm going to shine a spotlight on two of these projects that use very different methods to continue immersion beyond actual gameplay.<br />
<br />
In January, one <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-secret-world/"><em>TSW</em></a> fan ran an Alternate-Reality Game (ARG) for fellow players. Using Twitter, the forums, email, and even in-game characters, this player orchestrated a full-on investigation for participants to work through. And just recently, a new site offering to immerse players more deeply into the game through imagery was beta-launched. Both projects further player involvement in the world of the game -- the stories, the conspiracies, the histories, and the surroundings -- beyond the actual game. Both received support from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Funcom/">Funcom</a> in their efforts to expand the fans' experiences. And both are definitely worth checking out, so I sat down with the creators to get the scoop on the why, the how, and the what's next.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/06/chaos-theory-player-projects-enhance-the-secret-world-experienc/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Chaos Theory: Player projects enhance The Secret World experience</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/06/chaos-theory-player-projects-enhance-the-secret-world-experienc/">Chaos Theory: Player projects enhance The Secret World experience</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 06 May 2013 16:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/neverwinter"><em>Neverwinter</em></a> recently launched, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic">Cryptic's</a> Forgotten Realms MMO brought with it a substantial player-generated content toolset called the Foundry. The Foundry isn't the first of its kind, however, or even the first of its name. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> boasts an earlier version of Cryptic's Foundry, and other games going back a decade or more have also tried their hand at user content suites.<br />

After <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/26/massivelys-neverwinter-early-access-launch-diary-day-one/">yesterday's initial foray</a> into <a href="http://nw.perfectworld.com/"><em>Neverwinter</em></a>, I was eager to get back to it. I was still trying to figure everything out, including frustrating little issues (is there a screenshot key that saves to a folder? Can I keep the little notifications from constantly popping out of the side of the map?). There's that period of acclimation in new games when you're excited but also feel a little lost. I'm guessing it's going to be another day or two before I truly feel comfortable in my <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/neverwinter/"><em>Neverwinter</em></a> home.<br />
<br />
From what I can figure out, there are six main options for a typical <em>Neverwinter </em>play session. There are general PvE quests, skirmishes (think instanced public quests), zone-wide events, group dungeon runs, Foundry missions, and PvP fights. There's also playing the auction house, crafting, and making your own Foundry missions.<br />
<br />
Yesterday was about the first two, so I decided that the second day would be all about the Foundry. At a certain level or part of the quest line (around level 11), you gain access to daily Foundry quests. These give you astral diamonds as incentive to run player-made content, so I figured I had nothing to lose and everything to gain!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/27/massivelys-neverwinter-launch-diary-day-two/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively's Neverwinter early access launch diary: Day two</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/27/massivelys-neverwinter-launch-diary-day-two/">Massively's Neverwinter early access launch diary: Day two</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 27 Apr 2013 14:00:00 EST. Not too long ago, I had the opportunity to cover an occasion during which an in-game community came together and created a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/16/the-tattered-notebook-eqiis-ribbitribbit-day-celebrates-commun/">new player-run annual event</a>. Born as an anniversary follow-up to a service event for the young terminally ill player <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ribbitribbit/">Ribbitribbit</a>, the new tradition focused on celebrating that very community that pulled together to create him a dream playground within <em><a href="https://www.everquest2.com/">EverQuest II</a></em>. If the game lacked a sense of community in the game before that original project, it certainly didn't after.<br />
<br />
After tugging at my heartstrings for a while, that experience made me reflect on how much our communities are really a cornerstone of player-generated content. How often have you attended or participated in an event or run a mission created by someone other than yourself? And yet, when discussing important tools and elements needed to support player-generated content, we often overlook the necessity of a vibrant community. It's like trying to bake a cake without adding the flour. Or how about this analogy: You can give folks a giant tool box full of a shiny implements and tell them to build a house, but not much will happen without the actual wood and materials! So to foster PGC, games need to foster building communities.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/26/some-assembly-required-community-as-content/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Some Assembly Required: Community as content</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/26/some-assembly-required-community-as-content/">Some Assembly Required: Community as content</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 26 Apr 2013 16:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/goblinworks">Goblinworks</a>' CEO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ryan-dancey">Ryan Dancy</a> recently guested on the DM Fiat podcast. The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pathfinder-online"><em>Pathfinder Online</em></a> producer had plenty to say about the tabletop RPG that's invading the MMO space, including nuggets about <em>Pathfinder's</em> extensive guild/settlement system, the River Kingdoms and expanding beyond them, and player-generated content.<br />
<br />
Dancey says that Goblinworks would like for players to create their own PvE content modules and sell them to others, likely via some sort of app store format. He also mentions <em>Pathfinder's</em> archetype system and its numerous advantages over traditional class mechanics. Head to DM Fiat to listen to the podcast.<br />

Ready to play some <a href="http://nw.perfectworld.com/"><em>Neverwinter</em></a>? It looks as though <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic">Cryptic</a> is ready to pull the trigger on this bad boy, with a soft launch (<a href="http://nw.perfectworld.com/news/?p=849741">open beta with no wipes</a>) starting on April 25th for founders and April 30th for everyone else. While I'm not surprised that the studio is moving ahead with the launch, I still wish that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/neverwinter"><em>Neverwinter</em></a> were being held back a few months to get more testing time and to add more classes.<br />
<br />
You see, five classes doesn't seem like enough to me, especially in a D&amp;D MMO. Yes, there's plenty of room for growth here, and I'm sure that Cryptic will be charging for each new class rolled out, but five? That's pretty paltry, especially when you read <a href="http://www.ign.com/wikis/neverwinter/Neverwinter_Classes">this prospective list</a>.<br />
<br />
But I'm not in charge of development and schedules; I'm just a humble gamer and writer. So I'll lift my chin and get excited for the fact that, hey, we're going to be playing non-wipeable <em>Neverwinter </em>soon! That means that we all have just a couple of weeks to make a crucial decision: What class will we roll first? Let's take a look at the big five and see what the options are.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/17/neverwinter-days-choosing-your-first-class/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Neverwinter Days: Choosing your first class</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/17/neverwinter-days-choosing-your-first-class/">Neverwinter Days: Choosing your first class</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 17 Apr 2013 13:00:00 EST. With last Wednesday's release of <em><a href="https://www.everquest2.com/">EverQuest II's</a></em> latest prestige home, the totally awesome Hua Mein Retreat, I couldn't help but be focused on one of my favorite gaming features. I toured the new home, got to check out the break-out spots, and marveled at how pro <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">SOE</a> is with housing. Sure, there have been some misses when it comes to the prestige options, but things just keep getting better. Before long, my thoughts turned to the idea of housing in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next"><em>EverQuest Next</em></a>.<br />
<br />
Obviously, I am excited to play <em>EverQuest Next</em>. How could I not be? This studio has cornered the market on the most fun classes I have ever played (Dancer, Disciple, Fury, and Shaman) and the best housing systems I've personally had the pleasure to delve into <em>(</em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-galaxies"><em>Star Wars Galaxies</em></a>, <a href="https://www.vanguardthegame.com/"><em>Vanguard</em></a>, and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii">EverQuest II</a></em>). And now it's making another sandbox.<br />
<br />
But will <em>EQN</em> pull me permanently away from <em>EQII</em>, a game where I've earned my seven-year vet rewards? That, my friends, will depend in large part on the housing.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/13/the-tattered-notebook-can-eq-nexts-housing-measure-up-to-everq/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Can EQ Next's housing measure up to EverQuest II's?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/13/the-tattered-notebook-can-eq-nexts-housing-measure-up-to-everq/">The Tattered Notebook: Can EQ Next's housing measure up to EverQuest II's?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 13 Apr 2013 16:00:00 EST. Welcome to Massively's guide to MMO sandboxes in 2013 and beyond. I've collected the essential details on all the major sandbox titles releasing this year and in the near future in one easy-to-reference article. If you're wondering whether <a href="http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/634/feature/6374/PostPAX-Interview.html/page/1"><em>ArcheAge</em></a> forces you to PvP, or if you can't tell <a href="http://www.therepopulation.com"><em>The Repopulation</em></a> from <a href="http://www.originsofmalu.com"><em>Origins of Malu</em></a>, this is your post.<br />
<br />
I'll be updating it as game features are added, removed, or revealed, so be sure to use the comments to let me know if I've overlooked a particularly noteworthy item. Finally, I want to point out that this isn't an exhaustive list because of the sheer number of sandbox projects ongoing. For now, I'm choosing to focus on the ones that will be playable in 2013/2014 as well as the projects that have a big-name developer attached.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/12/some-assembly-required-your-guide-to-mmo-sandboxes-in-2013-and/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Some Assembly Required: Your guide to MMO sandboxes in 2013 and beyond</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/12/some-assembly-required-your-guide-to-mmo-sandboxes-in-2013-and/">Some Assembly Required: Your guide to MMO sandboxes in 2013 and beyond</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 12 Apr 2013 10:00:00 EST. Although there is no <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/some-assembly-required">Some Assembly Required</a> in the title, don't let that fool you; today's focus is on one of the founding precepts of this column, player-generated content. It's just not sandboxy player-generated content like we've covered before. Today's special edition explores the PGC proposed for the decidedly non-sandbox action RPG <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/path-of-exile">Path of Exile</a></em>.<br />
<br />
At <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-2013">GDC</a> I sat down with managing director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/chris-wilson/">Chris Wilson</a> and technical director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jonathan-rogers/">Jonathan Rogers</a> to discuss <em>Path of Exile</em> and their idea of adding player-run races to the game. A fan favorite, these timed gaming experiences are currently only officially sponsored events grouped into seasons, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/20/path-of-exiles-season-one-race-events-start-february-23rd/">the first of which</a> just concluded. However, devs would like to give players the opportunity to create and host unofficial events (meaning results won't have any bearing on the seasons) to allow players to enjoy this wildly popular facet of the game in a place where they can practice skills, test themselves against friends, or just enjoy a unique challenge.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/08/path-of-exile-interview-reveals-plans-for-player-generated-races/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Path of Exile interview reveals plans for player-generated races</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/08/path-of-exile-interview-reveals-plans-for-player-generated-races/">Path of Exile interview reveals plans for player-generated races</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 08 Apr 2013 16:30:00 EST. For many gamers, the name "Neverwinter" goes hand-in-hand with player-created content. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bioware">BioWare's</a> 2002 <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neverwinter_Nights"><em>Neverwinter Nights</em></a> and the 2006 sequel allowed players to whip up their own story modules for friends and strangers to enjoy. While many RPGs put us on the receiving end of the developer's storytelling, user-generated content (UGC) in <em>Neverwinter Nights</em> and other similar games allowed the common gamer a chance to try his or her hand at making an adventure from scratch.<br />
<br />
In my opinion, UGC is the holy grail for MMOs. We all know how developers can never create content faster than the community consumes it, so utilizing the community's creativity, time, and energy to assist in making that content theoretically eliminates a content limit. There's always something to do because people are always, always creating.<br />
<br />
But UGC is notoriously tricky to handle in a persistent online world, and it comes with many trouble spots that haven't been fully addressed. Considering just how much <a href="http://nw.perfectworld.com"><em>Neverwinter</em></a> is relying on its UGC, via the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Foundry/">Foundry</a>, to flesh out the game, I have to wonder: Can the Foundry succeed?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/03/neverwinter-days-can-the-foundry-succeed/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Neverwinter Days: Can the Foundry succeed?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/03/neverwinter-days-can-the-foundry-succeed/">Neverwinter Days: Can the Foundry succeed?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 03 Apr 2013 14:00:00 EST. This week we have a special <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2013/">GDC</a> edition of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Some-Assembly-Required/">Some Assembly Required</a>. I had the opportunity to sit down with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/chris-roberts">Chris Roberts</a> and talk about his highly anticipated space sim sandbox, <em><a href="http://www.robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/">Star Citizen</a></em>. We talked lore, the game's PvP/PvE sliders and living universe concepts, guilds, and when players can expect to get in some dogfighting. Roberts also delved deeply into the crafting and economic aspects of the game.<br />

<em>Captain's log, Stardate 86234.1. The USS Xiang Yu is reporting back to Starfleet Headquarters for a debriefing following a mission containing a cascading temporal anomaly linked to the ship's warp signature. My first officer has been asked to give a report on the observable effects of the phenomenon and what might be done in the future to prevent a similar incident from reoccurring.<br />
<br />
During what should have been a fairly simple search and rescue assignment, the Xiang Yu was trapped in a repeated cycle of destruction and temporal displacement. Upon closer examination, my chief engineer identified a concentration of chroniton signatures that corresponded with the impact points of torpedoes during an earlier engagement with the Orion Syndicate. Her theory is that these weapons were somehow responsible for this phenomenon.<br />
<br />
My first officer, meanwhile, is convinced that interpersonal relationships are in some way connected to this incident. I am occasionally unclear why Admiral Celeste encourages her in this fashion.</em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/27/choose-my-adventure-star-trek-online-iii-the-search-for-the-f/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Choose My Adventure: Star Trek Online III - The search for the Foundry</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/27/choose-my-adventure-star-trek-online-iii-the-search-for-the-f/">Choose My Adventure: Star Trek Online III - The search for the Foundry</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 27 Mar 2013 12:00:00 EST. You know what's something I didn't think I'd be saying about <a href="http://nw.perfectworld.com"><em>Neverwinter</em></a> prior to getting my hands on the beta? It shares <em>way </em>more in common with <a href="http://www.ddo.com"><em>Dungeons &amp; Dragons Online</em></a> than I'd assumed.<br />
<br />
Yeah yeah, they're both D&amp;D games and MMOs, and there's bound to be similarities on a basic level. But what I'm talking about is more than that: an uncanny connection between the games and a deliberate design philosophy that both seem to share. As a player who's done a couple of tours of duty in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dungeons-and-dragons-online"><em>DDO</em></a>, I think I have enough experience to claim this.<br />
<br />
Besides, everyone's already thinking about "the Dice Duel of 2013" as the papers are calling it. Two D&amp;D MMOs will be facing off against each other, one with a new expansion and the other with a game launch, and both are gunning for the same piece of the pie. So let's deal with this situation now rather than later and look at why <em>DDO </em>and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/neverwinter/"><em>Neverwinter</em></a> are more than kissing cousins.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/20/neverwinter-days-the-ddo-connection/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Neverwinter Days: The DDO connection</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/20/neverwinter-days-the-ddo-connection/">Neverwinter Days: The DDO connection</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 20 Mar 2013 13:00:00 EST. There is no two ways about it: Every time I started to pen this particular piece, I had to pause. You see, the story behind it all is steeped in emotion; inspiration, joy, pride, sadness, and togetherness are all a part of the heartwarming tale that is simply impossible to not be touched by (or in my case, completely choked up). And it's one that makes me proud to be a part of the <a href="https://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> community.<br />
<br />
Last year we shared with you the story of a young boy whose simple wish for a fun place to play in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/17/the-tattered-notebook-the-touching-story-of-ribbitribbit-and-th/"><em>EQII</em></a> brought the community together in an unparalleled way. In order to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/17/the-tattered-notebook-the-touching-story-of-ribbitribbit-and-th/">make an extra special place for Ribbitribbit</a>, adventurers, raiders, and crafters left their guilds -- heck, even their servers -- to come aid in what became more than a simple island refuge. It became a multi-house playground that included a Tier 3 guild hall. The sheer volume of enthusiastic participation is enough to make any heart swell. Sadly, shortly thereafter Ribbitribbit lost his battle with cancer, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/26/the-tattered-notebook-the-passing-of-ribbitribbitt/">that same community mourned his passing</a>. Now, one year later, the same organizer who uncorked that first outpouring of generosity has brought players together again to commemorate community, continue philanthropy, and remember those who have been lost.<br />
<br />
Today's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook/">Tattered Notebook</a> invites you to become a part of this community with a look at Ribbitribbit Day 2013.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/16/the-tattered-notebook-eqiis-ribbitribbit-day-celebrates-commun/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: EQII's Ribbitribbit Day celebrates community</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/16/the-tattered-notebook-eqiis-ribbitribbit-day-celebrates-commun/">The Tattered Notebook: EQII's Ribbitribbit Day celebrates community</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 16 Mar 2013 14:00:00 EST. The other week I posted a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/04/leaderboard-whats-the-best-star-wars-mmo/">Leaderboard</a> inviting people to vote for their favorite <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/star-wars">Star Wars</a> MMO. The comments featured a number of both predictable and surprising insights, but one line of thought in particular stood out to me. There are apparently some folks out there who think that Star Wars is nothing more than laser pistols and lightsabers, just as there are some folks who think that MMOs are nothing more than combat lobbies.<br />
<br />
While I'll stop short of labeling these people because of a difference in opinion, it's clear that they haven't really thought this through.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/15/some-assembly-required-you-cant-have-crafting-in-star-wars/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Some Assembly Required: There's no crafting in Star Wars!</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/15/some-assembly-required-you-cant-have-crafting-in-star-wars/">Some Assembly Required: There's no crafting in Star Wars!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 15 Mar 2013 13:00:00 EST. Before we get into the really hectic period of the pre- and post-launch frenzy, I wanted to take a week to discuss both why I'm looking forward to playing <a href="http://nw.perfectworld.com/"><em>Neverwinter</em></a> and why I decided to take on a column covering the game.<br />
<br />
Oddly enough, I've only been following this title very casually since its first announcement. Sometimes I get swept up in all of the pre-launch hype, and sometimes it just passes me by. In this case, I've dipped my toes into the waters of interest from time to time and found it pleasingly warm. Yet it's kind of a no-brainer to be interested in this game for me because I do love <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic's</a> titles and free-to-play philosophy (especially for <a href="http://sto.perfectworld.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>) and also because I'm at the right point in my life to appreciate some bite-sized gaming.<br />
<br />
Bite-sized gaming? Is that just vernacular for "fun size" candy bars that are neither filling nor sized for a party? Nay, I say to you. It's just a good alternative to have in a gaming diet.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/06/neverwinter-days-the-allure-of-bite-sized-gaming/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Neverwinter Days: The allure of bite-sized gaming</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/06/neverwinter-days-the-allure-of-bite-sized-gaming/">Neverwinter Days: The allure of bite-sized gaming</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 06 Mar 2013 20:00:00 EST. A recent comment made in regard to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/crafting/">crafting</a> in an upcoming game gave me pause. It went something like this: <em>If the gameplay fails, the crafting system won't matter</em>. My first thought was that this person must have accidentally tripped over his tongue and mistakenly substituted words, meaning to insert pwnzer PvP or some such instead of gameplay. Why? Because we all understand that as a part of playing the game, crafting is inherently gameplay.<br />
<br />
But then another explanation for this wildly inaccurate statement came to me; perhaps the speaker had actually never seen -- let alone experienced -- real, meaningful crafting in a game! After all, there has been a serious dearth of deep, involved crafting systems where skill and dedication are valued for quite some time in MMOs. Crafting, if it exists at all, is often relegated to some mechanic that can be slept through that results in uniform, standardized products. It's no wonder that some folks might not realize that crafting is gameplay.<br />
<br />
But change is a-comin'! Some upcoming games are returning to the idea that robust crafting systems are a deep and engaging part of games. Heck, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/11/26/some-assembly-required-a-greed-monger-interview/">the whole premise behind one</a> <em>is</em> crafting! Two titles, <em><a href="http://www.therepopulation.com/">The Repopulation</a></em> and <em><a href="https://goblinworks.com/">Pathfinder Online</a></em>, seem to have really hit the nail on the head when it comes to developing sophisticated crafting systems that have purpose and meaning. Today in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/some-assembly-required/">Some Assembly Required</a>, we'll take a closer look at how both are putting the "craft" back into crafting.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/01/some-assembly-required-bringing-the-craft-back-to-crafting/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Some Assembly Required: Bringing the 'craft' back to crafting</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/01/some-assembly-required-bringing-the-craft-back-to-crafting/">Some Assembly Required: Bringing the 'craft' back to crafting</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 01 Mar 2013 17:00:00 EST. Back when <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/player-studio">Player Studio</a> first introduced the idea of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/23/soe-live-2012-building-your-business-and-selling-homes-with-pla/">adding player-created items for sale</a> in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>EverQuest II's</em></a> cash shop, only housing items and cloaks could be submitted. However, players were promised that more items would be allowed in time. Well, break out your Blender, because that time is now! Fans with a creative streak can now submit personally designed hairstyles, weapons, and shields for consideration and possible inclusion in the game.<br />
<br />
Currently, hairstyles for only elves and humans can be submitted and must be shoulder-length or above. For weapons, various one- and two-handed stances are all possible, with the notable exception of caster staffs. Instructions, models, and samples are provided on the <a href="https://www.everquest2.com/player-studio/get-started">official site</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/28/eqii-player-studio-challenges-players-to-end-bad-hair-days/">EQII Player Studio challenges players to end bad hair days</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 28 Feb 2013 16:30:00 EST. If you've been following <a href="http://nw.perfectworld.com/"><em>Neverwinter's</em></a> development closely and combing the internet for every scrap of information about it, chances are that this week's column isn't for you. But if <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic's </a>newest D&amp;D dungeon crawler has arrested your interest as of late and you're trying to catch up with the rest of the crowd, I think we can be accommodating.<br />
<br />
Prior to a game's release, I like to bone up on the basics without crossing over into spoiler-heavy territory (especially guides and extensive video walkthroughs, but that's just me). It's a great time to get into dedicated podcasts on the game as well; I swear that podcasts at pre-launch are always more interesting than afterward.<br />
<br />
So this week we'll go over a few essential resources that all <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/neverwinter"><em>Neverwinter</em></a> fans, current and aspiring, should include in their bookmarks, as well as a brief discussion about the game's monetization plans.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/20/neverwinter-days-money-and-knowledge/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Neverwinter Days: Money and knowledge</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/20/neverwinter-days-money-and-knowledge/">Neverwinter Days: Money and knowledge</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 20 Feb 2013 12:00:00 EST. Late last year I penned a piece that looked ahead to 2013's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/12/21/some-assembly-required-six-reasons-to-love-sandboxes-in-2013/">most promising</a> sandbox titles. Recent developments have necessitated that I add to that list, which is simultaneously staggering and somewhat stressful. My new MMO home is lurking in one of these games, but I must choose, and <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oF2UrYSDb3k">choose wisely</a>! Help me out after the cut.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/15/some-assembly-required-the-sweet-sorrow-of-choosing-a-new-sandb/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Some Assembly Required: The sweet sorrow of choosing a new sandbox</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/15/some-assembly-required-the-sweet-sorrow-of-choosing-a-new-sandb/">Some Assembly Required: The sweet sorrow of choosing a new sandbox</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 15 Feb 2013 09:00:00 EST. Any game that implements a player-generated content system runs the risk of creating a system that's more fun -- or more lucrative -- than the original game itself. Players of the now-sunsetted <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/City-of-Heroes/">City of Heroes</a></em>, for example, were forever finding ways to turn experience and currency gain within the player-content tool known as the Mission Architect to their advantage. Imagine designing a mission with mobs that deal nothing but fire damage, then bringing your fire Tanker with her anti-fire shields to blaze through a group's worth of mobs while soaking up the levels and loot. Overpowered? Most definitely. Fun? Frequently, especially when you just wanted to level up your 50th alt to get to the good powers. Exploitable? Some people did consider such activities to be expoits, and to pacify them, the developers brought so many nerfhammers down on the system that by the end, it was seldom used except by the most diehard storygoers.<br />
<br />
This same battle is now being <a href="http://nw-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?33891-Let-us-make-a-pact-concerning-Foundry-and-its-rating-system&amp;p=592711&amp;viewfull=1#post592711">waged</a> <a href="http://nw-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?33891-Let-us-make-a-pact-concerning-Foundry-and-its-rating-system/page2&amp;p=566101#post566101">on the</a> <a href="http://nw-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?33891-Let-us-make-a-pact-concerning-Foundry-and-its-rating-system&amp;p=584971&amp;viewfull=1#post584971">forums</a> of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Neverwinter/">Neverwinter</a></em>, which game will also implement a player-generated content system that allows participants to design and play each other's missions. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic/">Cryptic</a> plans to curtail potential powergaming by limiting rewards earned through the tool, but there's always a danger of limiting rewards so much they're not worth the bother. Today, let's discuss what you think about the potential dangers of PGC. Are powergaming and farming acceptable uses of PGC tools like the Foundry? Do you prefer studios crack down hard on people who aren't doing it the "right" way? Or do you have a different solution?<br />

Welcome to Neverwinter Days, a fresh new column that will be pulling on our +1 boots of game exploring while we go tramping through dungeons and fantastic locales. I'm fairly excited about this game and wanted to explore it from top to bottom while bringing you along for company.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://nw.perfectworld.com/"><em>Neverwinter</em></a> is a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic</a> title, and with that comes a laundry list of expectations: Players will be pretty divided on it, it'll skew toward "fun" and "buggy," there'll be a lot of visual customization, and "F" always, always interacts with the world. And it's a Dungeons &amp; Dragons title, so there are even more genre expectations. For example, we're going to be laying the smackdown on Kobolds early and often. Poor buggers.<br />
<br />
Usually we begin a column by showcasing the community resources out there, but we're going to put that off until next time in favor of discussing this past weekend's beta event. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/07/neverwinters-cloak-tower-a-photo-essay/">Yours truly</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/11/first-impressions-of-neverwinter-beta/">several other</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/08/massivelys-video-guide-to-neverwinter-character-creation/">Massively staffers</a> were on the scene to chow through <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/neverwinter/">Neverwinter</a> </em>and see how it's shaping up in these final months prior to release. So what did I get out of it? It's going to cost you one click to find out!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/13/neverwinter-days-beta-blitz/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Neverwinter Days: Beta blitz</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/13/neverwinter-days-beta-blitz/">Neverwinter Days: Beta blitz</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 13 Feb 2013 10:00:00 EST. Last week, I explored <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/04/chaos-theory-mounting-a-campaign-for-vehicles-in-the-secret-wo/">transportation</a> as one avenue of making <em><a href="http://www.thesecretworld.com/">The Secret World</a></em> even more of a living, breathing world. Today, my focus is on that one aspect that really can make an MMO a home: actual homes!<br />
<br />
It's no secret that I love housing; I've written about it on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/06/22/some-assembly-required-desert-homes-of-vanguards-qalia/">multiple</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/09/some-assembly-required-swg-housing-extravaganza/">occasions</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/livestream">livestreamed</a> tours in various games as well. But this isn't just about fulfilling a personal wish list. Adding housing goes beyond making my gaming experience more immersive (though it most certainly does that); it's a method for increasing the longevity of the game. Housing is one of those features that, when done well, binds players to a game, giving them a reason to not only stay in game longer during a play session but stick with the game long term. And I definitely want that for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-secret-world/">The Secret World</a></em>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/11/chaos-theory-oh-give-me-a-home/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Chaos Theory: Oh, give me a home -- in TSW</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/11/chaos-theory-oh-give-me-a-home/">Chaos Theory: Oh, give me a home -- in TSW</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 11 Feb 2013 15:00:00 EST. <span style="font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt;">At January's </span><em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/WildStar/">WildStar</a></em><span style="font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt;"> press event, I had the opportunity to chat with several of </span><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Carbine-studios/">Carbine's</a><span style="font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt;"> developers about something near and dear to my heart: modding. During my personal demo, </span><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/JeremyGaffney/">Jeremy Gaffney</a><span style="font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt;"> remarked offhandedly -- twice! -- that people don't really want to play the UI; they want to play the game. I know that he's right about <em>some</em> people, and I'm glad game developers are devoting resources toward designing a seamless blend of UI and gameplay that makes actually healing party members as fun or more fun than playing Grid-style healer whackamole. But whackamole or not, I <em>do</em> want to play the UI. I want to <em>tinker</em>.</span><br />

Fortunately, <em>WildStar</em> intends to accommodate me in a huge way. Read on for the scoop on <em>WildStar's</em> planned modding tools, player councils, and player-generated content.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/06/slap-a-rocket-on-a-pig-wildstars-modding-and-pgc-community/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Slap a rocket on a pig: WildStar's modding and PGC community</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/06/slap-a-rocket-on-a-pig-wildstars-modding-and-pgc-community/">Slap a rocket on a pig: WildStar's modding and PGC community</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 06 Feb 2013 09:00:00 EST. Sandbox aficionados are known to reminisce about the "good old days." You know, that time long lost in the past when the greats of open-world play like <a href="http://uo.com/"><em>Ultima Online</em></a> and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-galaxies">Star Wars Galaxies</a></em> (pre-NGE of course) enjoyed their heyday. Many a lamentation has also been heard about how things have never been the same, or how nothing has filled that void.<br />
<br />
Of course, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/02/some-assembly-required-is-the-sandbox-dead/">sandbox never died</a>. In 2012 we started the year off with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/06/some-assembly-required-a-virtual-world-round-up/">a guide to games sporting sandbox features</a> to scratch a variety of virtual world itches and we ended with a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/12/21/some-assembly-required-six-reasons-to-love-sandboxes-in-2013/">look at some promising upcoming titles</a> for 2013. With plenty of choices abounding, why are sandbox fans still decrying the lack of a home? It could be because they want one home for everyone to settle in together, basically one game to rule them all. But how realistic is that?<br />
<br />
Even with the plethora of offerings now, many folks want to play <em>their</em> ideal sandbox, and everyone has their own idea of what <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/18/some-assembly-required-the-ultimate-mmorpg/">the perfect one</a> would be (and conversely, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/30/some-assembly-required-how-to-screw-up-your-sandbox/">what would kill it</a>). Perhaps the answer, then, is to forget about a single universal home that accommodates the masses and actually create a number of niche games where people find exactly what they are looking for. Wait, that's already happening? Enter Kickstarter.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/01/some-assembly-required-kick-start-ing-the-sandbox-genre-into-hi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Some Assembly Required: Kick(start)ing the sandbox genre</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/01/some-assembly-required-kick-start-ing-the-sandbox-genre-into-hi/">Some Assembly Required: Kick(start)ing the sandbox genre</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 01 Feb 2013 13:00:00 EST. MMO player housing usually comes in one of two varieties: instanced or open-world. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/the-repopulation"><em>The Repopulation</em></a>, on the other hand, will feature both as well as a third option tied to player-owned cities.<br />
<br />
The instanced housing will be available to everyone, though players of different factions will be restricted to different housing neighborhoods. Open-world housing will be limited, of course, but players will also be able to buy and sell the plots. Player city housing will feature a similar plot system that is administered by the owner of the city in question.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/above-and-beyond-technologies">Above &amp; Beyond Technologies</a> has authored a new blog post explaining <em>The Repopulation's</em> housing systems in further detail. It's been raining for four days straight, and I've been cooped up in my house with nothing but a head cold and a bunch of time to think about my ideal sandbox MMORPG.<br />
<br />
For this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/some-assembly-required">Some Assembly Required</a>, then, I'm shamelessly borrowing the format from Massively's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/mmo-blender">MMO Blender</a> column to construct a perfect(ly) theoretical hybrid. I've done so <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/26/mmo-blender-jefs-swg-star-citizen-mashup/">once before</a>, but this time I'm going to put the focus on fantasy instead of on the sci-fi stylings of <a href="http://www.robertsspaceindustries.com/"><em>Star Citizen</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-galaxies"><em>Star Wars Galaxies</em></a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/18/some-assembly-required-the-ultimate-mmorpg/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Some Assembly Required: The ultimate MMORPG</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/18/some-assembly-required-the-ultimate-mmorpg/">Some Assembly Required: The ultimate MMORPG</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 18 Jan 2013 11:00:00 EST. Well, speak of the devil! No sooner did I get done exploring the topic of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/04/some-assembly-required-how-do-you-define-player-generated-conte/">whether or not PvP is player-generated content</a> than I stumbled upon some players generating content based on PvP in <a href="http://na.aiononline.com/"><em>Aion</em></a>. And by "stumbled upon," I mean "noticed on the launcher while loading up for some winged fun." The group <a href="http://epidemicgaming.com/">Epidemic Gaming</a> was set to host a PvP tournament on the Tiamat server. As an <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/some-assembly-required">obvious fan</a> of PGC, I immediately made plans to attend.<br />
<br />
I'll be the first to admit I am not by any means a master of PvP (so you can quit your laughing over there before your sides split), but both the announcement and the message itself brought a smile to my face and more hope to my heart. Heck, I may even have more spring in my step! Why? I'll tell you why! Join me as we check out this battle royal where the Daevas of Tiamat duke it out until there's only one standing as well as what an event such as this means for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/13/wings-over-atreia-pvp-tourney-produces-victory-for-winner-and-a/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Wings Over Atreia: PvP tourney produces victory for winner and Aion</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/13/wings-over-atreia-pvp-tourney-produces-victory-for-winner-and-a/">Wings Over Atreia: PvP tourney produces victory for winner and Aion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 13 Jan 2013 12:00:00 EST. Beyond amazing character design, compelling narratives, and the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dragons/">presence of dragons</a>, there is one thing that all MMOs depend upon for success: player loyalty. Without returning subscribers, a loving community, or folks dropping a few dimes in the cash shop now and again, MMOs simply wouldn't be a feasible way for a games studio to do business. Smart development teams have <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/player-retention/">player retention</a> departments tasked specifically with tracking and analyzing the rise and fall of player allegiances and finding ways to leverage loyalty is becoming an increasingly important aspect of the creation process.<br />
<br />
Even the non-gaming world is getting in on the fray. Back in November, researchers at the University at Buffalo School of Management <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/11/16/university-study-explores-game-loyalty-in-mmos/">published a study</a> tracing the roots of player loyalties in a variety of MMO environments. The study outlined the mentalities of MMO gamers and the things that successfully encouraged them to keep coming back for more looting, more grinding, and more <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/emote/">/hugging</a>. Most importantly, the study declared that an MMO that increases loyalty by just 5% can increase profits by 25-95%.<br />
<br />
We sat down with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Lawrence-Sanders/">Dr. Lawrence Sanders</a>, co-author of the study, to dive a little deeper into the researchers' methods, results, and plans for future MMO investigation.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/09/massively-interview-dr-lawrence-sanders-on-mmo-loyalty/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively Interview: Dr. Lawrence Sanders on MMO loyalty</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/09/massively-interview-dr-lawrence-sanders-on-mmo-loyalty/">Massively Interview: Dr. Lawrence Sanders on MMO loyalty</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 09 Jan 2013 15:00:00 EST.
