	<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/14/free-for-all-free-to-play-mmo-versions-of-your-favorite-nintend/"><img alt="Nintendo banner" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/nintendosystemeuropeanversionentertainmentdesktop1024x768wallpaper-355832.jpg" style="border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-top-style: solid; border-right-style: solid; border-bottom-style: solid; border-left-style: solid; margin-left: 4px; margin-right: 4px; margin-top: 4px; margin-bottom: 4px; " /></a></div>
I have to be honest -- I wasn't the biggest Nintendo fan. I grew up right as the whole thing was really smashing and keeping kids glued to their TVs, but I generally went outside and played more than stayed inside and played games. (Odd, huh?) Still, I had my fun with certain titles. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contra_(video_game)"><em>Contra</em></a> rocked my boat, along with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kid_Icarus"><em>Kid Icarus</em></a> and a bit of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_Bros."><em>Mario Brothers</em></a>. My friends, on the other hand, were full members of the Nintendo nation. They subcribed to the magazine, played the same games for hours and hours, and generally acted as though the fate of the real world hung in the balance as they attacked that last boss monster.<br />
<br />
Stylistically, the games have left a mark on the genre. Many of those same titles still sell as well, some of them reaching so many variations that I lost track a long, long time ago. I thought it might be fun to list off some free-to-play MMOs that remind me of those old classics. See what you think, and leave any suggestions in the comments section!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/14/free-for-all-free-to-play-mmo-versions-of-your-favorite-nintend/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Free for All: Free-to-play MMO versions of your favorite Nintendo games</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/14/free-for-all-free-to-play-mmo-versions-of-your-favorite-nintend/">Free for All: Free-to-play MMO versions of your favorite Nintendo games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 14 Mar 2012 20:00:00 EST. It's launch day for <em><a href="http://wonderking.ndoorsgames.com/">WonderKing Online</a></em> and Massively, as usual, has you covered. But wait! What is <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/wonderking">WonderKing</a></em>, you ask?<br />
<br />
<em>WonderKing</em> is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ndoors">NDOORS Interactive</a>'s newest free-to-play title, joining the ranks of <a href="http://atlantica.ndoorsgames.com"><em>Atlantica Online</em></a> and <a href="http://luminary.ndoorsgames.com"><em>Luminary: Rise of the GoonZu</em></a>. <em>WonderKing</em> plays very much in the vein of <a href="http://maplestory.nexon.net"><em>MapleStory</em></a>, offering a two-dimensional, action and platforming based experience rather than the traditional 3-D MMO targeting combat.<br />
<br />
However, unlike <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/maplestory"><em>MapleStory</em></a>, <em>WonderKing</em> goes a bit further with its MMO aspects in the form of crafting and cooking systems, an upcoming player housing system, and the upcoming ability to become a king by taking over a castle and defeating other players.<br />
<br />
We've been keeping up with <em>WonderKing</em> for you guys, so here's a roundup of our coverage on this new free-to-play title. Read, learn, and find out if <em>WonderKing</em> is right for you!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/28/massivelys-wonderking-online-launch-day-roundup/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively's WonderKing Online launch day roundup</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/28/massivelys-wonderking-online-launch-day-roundup/">Massively's WonderKing Online launch day roundup</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 28 Jan 2010 12:00:00 EST. Welcome to our <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/first-impressions/">First Impressions</a> of the king of all 2D MMOs, <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://maplestory.nexon.net/WZ.ASPX?PART=/Main">Maple Story</a>! If you haven't played it, consider this a dip of the toe into its cuter-than-thou madness. We're not divulging secrets here, this is not a guide of any sort; this is just a record of the way we found the game during our first hour or so of play. Caveat emptor!<br /><br />First of all, please notice the banner ad at the top of this post. That should tell you everything you need to know about MS in a nutshell: Cute superdeformed anime-esque graphics, goofy-themed gameplay, and an engaging sense of humor about itself. Cyborg turkeys, yes, yes, a thousand times yes. Don't forget, clicking on the following pictures leads to their hi-res versions. Read on, O brave audience!<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/first-impressions-maple-story/">First Impressions: Maple Story</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/first-impressions-maple-story/#978854"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/08/maplestory_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Select world/channel" title="Select world/channel" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/first-impressions-maple-story/#978857"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/08/maplestory_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Select character screen" title="Select character screen" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/first-impressions-maple-story/#978852"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/08/maplestory_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Create character screen" title="Create character screen" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/first-impressions-maple-story/#978856"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/08/maplestory_06_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Training camp" title="Training camp" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/first-impressions-maple-story/#978859"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/08/maplestory_07_thumbnail.jpg" alt="The training grotto" title="The training grotto" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/15/first-impressions-maple-story/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>First Impressions: Maple Story</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/15/first-impressions-maple-story/">First Impressions: Maple Story</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 15 Aug 2008 19:30:00 EST. With all the hullabaloo over the last several months speculating about the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/01/mmos-may-not-inherit-the-earth-after-all/">elimination</a> or <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/06/are-mmos-killing-single-player-rpgs/">possible convergence</a> of traditional single player experiences into the new massively multiplayer model, the last thing we expected to turn up in our daily lap around the web is one of the most beloved MMOs to date transmogrified into a single player platformer/RPG. While it's hardly the robust single player experience of a commercial product, <a href="http://www.aoedipus.net/dist/wtfloader.html">the aptly named <em>WTF?!</em></a> takes a look at what would happen if <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> were condensed into two dimensions.<br /><br />You can play either a Blood Elf Priest or a Gnome Rogue, both of which play slightly differently even within the confines of two dimensions. The game is a little buggy (make sure you get the trinket from Hegemon before you try and take down Mary Daly!) and slightly misogynistic, but it's got a certain flare that is hard to not find endearing. Maybe it's the humor or maybe it's the <em>Mario</em> sound effects, it's hard to pin down. In any case, if you're bored at work this week but don't have the machine for <em>WoW</em>, <a href="http://www.aoedipus.net/dist/wtfloader.html">check it out</a>.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://brokentoys.org/2008/06/02/wtf/">Broken Toys</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/02/world-of-warcraft-in-two-dimensions/">World of Warcraft in two dimensions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 02 Jun 2008 19:00:00 EST.
