Fancy being a pirate in the fantasy world of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/archeage"><em>ArcheAge</em></a>? You can, and all it takes is a ship and a crew of your best mates.<br />
<br />
A new player-made video shows off the game's naval combat potential, and the clip is basically three minutes of jaw-dropping PvP action. There's plenty of carnage courtesy of player-manned ship cannons and destructible hulls, and we can also see combatants crossing swords on the decks of enemy ships (if you look closely you'll catch a glimpse of a player using a hang-glider to travel from one ship to the next).<br />
<br />
The video also gives us a good look at <em>ArcheAge's</em> functional ship rigging, and you can see players unfurling sails, interacting with various ship controls, and even climbing a mast to the crow's nest. Check it out after the break.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/21/yarr-archeage-cbt4-video-shows-player-piracy/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Yarr! <br />
Unless you've been living under a rock, chances are you've heard of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_Online_Piracy_Act">SOPA</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PROTECT_IP_Act">PIPA</a>. The Stop Online Piracy Act and PROTECT IP Act are two radical pieces of copyright legislation currently being pushed through the US government. Although the stated intent of the new legislation is to provide companies with additional tools with which to combat piracy, the bill's <a href="http://motherboard.vice.com/2011/12/16/dear-congress-it-s-no-longer-ok-to-not-know-how-the-internet-works">loose wording has raised some serious alarm bells</a>. Opponents to the proposed law say it would give corporations the ability to shut down any almost any website under the guise of protecting copyright infringement.<br />
<br />
Gamers will be affected worst of all, as the loose wording of the law makes any website with user-submitted content potentially vulnerable to a shut down order. That could include YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, any blog with a comment section, or even any online game with a chat system. Perhaps the scariest part is that you'll be affected even if you're not in the US, as one of the new law's enforcement mechanisms is to remove a site from the DNS records, a move that assumes the US has jurisdiction over the global Domain Name System. <a href="http://boingboing.net/2011/11/16/internet-giants-place-full-pag.html">AOL is among many huge companies strongly opposing SOPA</a>, and so naturally Massively opposes it too.<br />
<br />
In this week's massive two-page <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-soapbox/">Soapbox</a>, I make the case for why you should be worried about SOPA, and I suggest what can be done to tackle piracy in the games industry. Comments can be left on page two.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/10/the-sopabox-defeating-online-piracy-by-destroying-the-internet/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The SOPAbox: Defeating online piracy by destroying the internet</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/10/the-sopabox-defeating-online-piracy-by-destroying-the-internet/">The SOPAbox: Defeating online piracy by destroying the internet</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 10 Jan 2012 11:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/sony/">Sony</a> may once again be the target of hacking attacks, but at least this time the company has a little heads-up in advance. The secretive organization of hackers known as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/anonymous/">Anonymous</a> released a video declaring its intent to strike at Sony over Sony's support of the controversial <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_Online_Piracy_Act">Stop Online Piracy Act</a> (SOPA).<br />
<br />
The video contains your usual vague proclamations of doom and ego-boosting statements, although with Anonymous' past activity, it will be hard to ignore the threat. The collective of hackers were thought to be <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/06/hackers-say-anonymous-was-responsible-for-sony-attack/">at least partially responsible</a> for the attack on Sony earlier this year that forced the company to take its network and games offline.<br />
<br />
SOPA is a proposed U.S. bill that would allow law enforcement to combat pirated digital goods by shutting down websites and blocking payments to site owners. While the bill is supported by Hollywood, the music industry, and some major game companies, SOPA opposers worry that the bill will infringe on First Amendment rights and permanently harm the internet.<br />
<br />
You can watch the Anonymous declaration after the jump.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/30/anonymous-declares-war-on-sony-over-sopa-support/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Anonymous declares war on Sony over SOPA support</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/30/anonymous-declares-war-on-sony-over-sopa-support/">Anonymous declares war on Sony over SOPA support</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 30 Dec 2011 16:00:00 EST. PvP in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/">EVE Online</a></em> is more often likened to a game of strategy than of action. If that's true, then Rooks and Kings' impressive track record for tactical genius makes the alliance undeniably a grandmaster of intergalactic chess. The group's instructional video <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/02/eve-evolved-the-top-ten-eve-videos-of-all-time-part-2/">Clarion Call: Triage Special</a> in early 2009 was released to wide acclaim, and the tactics demonstrated in the video became core strategies replicated by military corporations throughout the game. The follow-up video <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/13/eve-video-corner-clarion-call-2-pantheon/">Clarion Call: Pantheon</a> evolved those strategies to counter opponents prepared to come up against triage carriers.<br />
<br />
Massively is proud to exclusively reveal Rooks and Kings' third and undeniably most impressive video to date. Clarion Call 3 moves the stage of Rooks and Kings' normal hunting grounds in nullsec and lowsec to the undiscovered lands of wormhole space. But star Alazais says "one does not simply walk into a wormhole," noting that the tight restrictions on the mass of ships that can enter a wormhole presents new challenges. The group fought outnumbered and outgunned against an enemy possessing an ability that later became known as "the infinity gun."<br />
<br />
Skip past the cut to learn more about the infinity gun exploit and to watch the full film. Don't forget to set it to 1080p for the full HD experience.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/18/amazing-eve-online-video-tells-epic-tale-of-wormhole-conflict/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Amazing EVE Online video tells epic tale of wormhole conflict</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/18/amazing-eve-online-video-tells-epic-tale-of-wormhole-conflict/">Amazing EVE Online video tells epic tale of wormhole conflict</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 18 Nov 2011 09:00:00 EST. Over the years, I've introduced several friends to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE Online</em></a> and tried to give them the best start possible. Offering a financial safety net for ship losses definitely helped a little, as did providing funding to back market experiments and manufacturing or research ventures. What I found helped most of all was to bring new players on quick PvP fleets and discourage them from gravitating toward mining or mission-running as their primary form of gameplay. The adrenaline rush of <em>EVE</em> PvP is something I've yet to find in another MMO, and it's the reason so many of us are hooked to the game. It only makes sense then to introduce new players to it as soon as possible.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/17/eve-evolved-learning-to-let-go/">Last month, I encouraged new players</a> who might be starting out on their own to grab a few friends and similarly charge into PvP from day one. To follow up, the last two weeks' columns have been dedicated to getting <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/24/eve-evolved-getting-into-your-first-pvp-frigate/">new players into their first PvP frigate</a> and upgrading to a cruiser, with emphasis on staying financially ahead of the inevitable ship losses. Last week we tackled Gallente and Amarr ships, with some cheap battle-tested setups for the Thorax, Vexor, Arbitrator and Omen that new players will be able to fly with only a few weeks of skill training.<br />

In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-evolved/">EVE Evolved</a>, we look at Minmatar and Caldari cruisers, with setups for the Stabber, Rupture, Blackbird and Moa and tips on saving your escape pod to minimise the cost of death.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/07/eve-evolved-upgrading-to-a-pvp-cruiser-minmatar-and-caldari/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: Upgrading to a PvP cruiser: Minmatar and Caldari</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/07/eve-evolved-upgrading-to-a-pvp-cruiser-minmatar-and-caldari/">EVE Evolved: Upgrading to a PvP cruiser: Minmatar and Caldari</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 07 Aug 2011 18:00:00 EST. <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/eve-spotlight">EVE Spotlight</a> is a biweekly feature in which we interview prominent members of </em><a href="http://www.eve-online.com">EVE Online</a><em>'s player community or development team. Twice each month, we'll be shining the spotlight on a player or developer who has a significant impact on </em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/">EVE</a><em> to highlight the efforts of </em>EVE<em>'s most influential people.</em><br />
<br />
Whether you love <em><a href="http://www.eve-online.com">EVE Online</a></em> or hate it, there's no doubting that the game's community has produced some great works of art. From <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/14/eve-spaceships-artfully-designed-into-nature/">wallpapers</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/06/eve-online-player-creativity-papercraft-pod-edition/">papercraft ships</a> to <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vfv1QtZDirY">music parodies</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/02/eve-evolved-the-top-ten-eve-videos-of-all-time/">incredible cinematic videos</a>, <em>EVE</em> has seen more than its fair share of creative efforts over the years. In <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/15/eve-evolved-emergence-in-the-sandbox/"><em>EVE</em>'s colossal social sandbox</a>, players often use their real-life talents to make a name for themselves in the community, and this spotlight's interviewee is no exception. <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Kyoko_Sakoda_%28Character%29">Film-maker Kyoko Sakoda</a> has popped up on our radar several times, impressing players with his awesome contributions to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a>'s cinematic film scene.<br />
<br />
Kyoko debuted with the well-composed 2008 video <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&amp;threadID=798375">Push Eject (The Angel Cartel)</a>. Hoping to showcase the pirate way of life, he produced this video to celebrate the future release of faction warfare and the role piracy would play in it. Kyoko went on to produce <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&amp;threadID=974250">War Has Come</a> and worked with Kale Ryoko on the incredible cinematic work <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/31/eve-video-corner-future-proof/">Future Proof</a>. The holographic UI components Kyoko produced in Future Proof mirror those used in <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/ccp">CCP's</a> own <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/29/eve-online-the-butterfly-effect/">Butterfly Effect</a> trailer, and the success of those videos may even be pushing CCP to develop similar 3-D user interface elements for <em>EVE</em>.<br />
<br />
In this edition of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eve-spotlight/">EVE Spotlight</a>, we interview film-maker Kyoko Sakoda to ask about his previous videos and get the low-down on his next big project.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/19/eve-spotlight-an-interview-with-kyoko-sakoda/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Spotlight: An interview with Kyoko Sakoda</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/19/eve-spotlight-an-interview-with-kyoko-sakoda/">EVE Spotlight: An interview with Kyoko Sakoda</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 19 May 2011 13:00:00 EST. The U.S. Navy <a href="http://gamepolitics.com/2011/05/10/us-navy-uses-mmo-train-real-world-piracy">has a new tool in its war against piracy on the high seas</a>: MMOs. Specifically, the Massive Multiplayer Online WarGame Leveraging the Internet, or "MMOWGLI" if you like your awkward acronyms. Developed over several years to bring war simulations to the next level, MMOWGLI will go online May 16th and be used by civilians and military to figure out new ways to combat Somali pirates.<br />
<br />
This unique MMO was developed by the <a href="http://www.onr.navy.mil/">Office of Naval Research</a> to be used as a flexible training platform. Under the watch of a control team, players will secure and arm ships, plan for a variety of pirate attacks, figure out hostage situations, and raid pirate camps. There's no word on whether these raids will be 10, 20, or 40-mans.<br />
<br />
ONR's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Larry-Schutte/">Dr. Larry Schutte</a> looks forward to seeing if this simulator will result in better preparedness: <em>"We hope MMOWGLI will help us to understand what happens when your insights are combined with the observations and actions of another player -- will that fusion result in a game-changing idea or solution, or will the MMOWGLI platform teach us something about our traditional thought processes?"</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/11/u-s-navy-fights-piracy-with-mmos/">U.S. Navy fights piracy with MMOs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 11 May 2011 09:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em> EVE Online</em></a>'s Community Manager CCP Wrangler once said that <em>"EVE isn't designed to just look like a cold, dark and harsh world; it's designed to be a cold, dark and harsh world."</em> That sentiment sums up the core philosophy behind the game, which permits such nefarious gameplay styles as thief, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/24/outlaws-of-eve-online-masudi/">smuggler</a>, scam-artist, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/09/eve-evolved-pvp-masterclass-the-dark-side/">pirate</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/14/eve-evolved-eves-economic-underworld/">market manipulator</a>. Underhanded deals go on every day in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a>, with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/16/eve-evolved-mercenaries-the-hired-goons-of-eve/">bounty hunters</a> hired to ruin someone's day and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/27/eve-evolved-corporate-infiltration-for-fun-and-profit/">spies tearing corporations apart from within</a>. Many are drawn to <em>EVE</em> because it's one of the few MMOs that allows players to embrace their darker side. The opportunity to be a real villain in a sandbox universe can be intoxicating.<br />
<br />
Perhaps more intoxicating is the notion that the presence of tangible villains affords players a rare opportunity to play the role of hero. For every pirate gang lurking at a stargate in low security space, there's an anti-pirate squad somewhere planning an attack. For every thief ready to empty their corporation's hangers, there's a security specialist weeding out spies. The true outlaws of <em>EVE</em> are people who have earned their infamy through acts of ruthlessness in their chosen field.<br />
<br />
Over the years, we've interviewed and examined some of <em>EVE</em>'s most notorious outlaws. In this article, I look back at four of <em>EVE</em>'s most wanted, how they earned their infamy, and what they're doing today.<strong><br />

When it comes to fighting the gold-sellers, Icelandic game developer <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a> took an innovative approach to the problem. Players of <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> can buy game time with cash and then trade it with other players as <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/30_days_Concord_Pilot_License_Extension">in-game "Pilots License EXtensions" (PLEX)</a>. This lets people with cash to spare effectively purchase ISK from other players, while those with plenty of in-game ISK can effectively play for free. With a legitimate method for buying ISK, players needn't face the inevitable threat of bans and key-loggers from nefarious sources. Fearing that the market for PLEX might not take off if they were at risk of being lost during transport. To combat this issue, CCP made it impossible to move them from the station they were redeemed at.<br />
<br />
In a new devblog, CCP Zulu explains <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=776">plans to remove all the transport restrictions on PLEX</a>. In addition to being able to undock with a PLEX in your cargo hold, you'll also be able to place them into courier contracts. When these changes come into effect, you might see someone hauling game time from station to station. If you plan to move any PLEX around, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/28/eve-evolved-staying-safe-in-high-security-space/">be extremely wary of suicide attacks</a>. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a>'s darker social element routinely scans passers-by in high-security space, looking for juicy targets to gank. The possibility of finding game time amongst the loot may send them into overdrive. The changes are due to come into effect on Tuesday the 13th of July.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/11/changes-to-eve-onlines-plex-make-it-possible-to-loot-game-time/">Changes to EVE Online's PLEX make it possible to loot game time</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 11 Jul 2010 10:00:00 EST. As a sandbox game, <a href="http://www.eve-online.com/"><em>EVE Online</em></a> allows every person to play his or her own way. Some players like to trade on the market, run missions in whatever spare time they get or manufacture ships for their corporation. Others play for <a href="http://www.eve-pirate.com/">the adrenaline rush of PvP</a> or the strategy of political conquest. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a>'s population can be roughly split into those players that PvP regularly and those that don't, with a surprising number of pilots <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/28/eve-evolved-staying-safe-in-high-security-space/">abstaining from it altogether</a>. But what if you're one of those players who doesn't PvP and thinks it's time for a change? Maybe you've had enough of mining rocks and finally <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/16/eve-evolved-wormhole-piracy-101/">want to give piracy a go</a>. Or perhaps your corp is the target of yet another war declaration and you think it's time to make a stand. Whatever your reasons, making the transition into the world of ships blowing each other to smithereens can be a tricky business.<br />
<br />
In this informative guide, I look at the various things a player or corporation can do to prepare themselves for war and ease the transition into a PvP play style<strong>.</strong><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/20/eve-evolved-preparing-for-war/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: Preparing for war</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/20/eve-evolved-preparing-for-war/">EVE Evolved: Preparing for war</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 20 Jun 2010 18:00:00 EST. Arguably one of the more popular things to do in <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> along with blowing people into smithereens, manipulating the markets, or good old-fashioned mining, is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/11/new-eve-quarterly-economic-newsletter-talks-wormholes-and-tech-3/">scanning down wormholes</a>. With the chance at goodies -- whether via resources or <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/16/eve-evolved-wormhole-piracy-101/">making off with someone else's resources</a> -- wormholes have also proven to be profitable. Today, we have a very short note, but a graphically pretty screenshot from Mal Iss of [Los Chupacabras]. With that said, he apparently wasn't content with just <em>regular</em> bragging rights, so he decided to capture a picture of his pirate expedition and email it in to us. The note attached read only "<em>piracying a Chimera in a wormhole... YARRR!!!</em>" Hope they had insurance. <br />

From large to small, we love to see MMOs of all styles and sizes. If you'd like to show off your favorite game and give others a glimpse into one of the things that you think makes it cool, why not send in a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/One-Shots/">One Shots</a> image? All you have to do is email it to us here at <strong>oneshots AT massively DOT com</strong> along with your name, the name of the game, and a description of what we're looking at. We'll post it out here and give you the credit for sending it in.<br />

Today marked the announcement of a major new content update for an MMORPG set in a galaxy far, far away. No, not that one. <a href="http://www.station.sony.com/">Sony Online Entertainment</a> brings us word of the new <a href="http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/en_US/players/content.vm?page=Current+update&amp;cid=EM3107&amp;_mid=3107&amp;_rid=3107.3001.39768">Game Update 16: Stronghold of the Lok Revenants</a> content patch for <a href="http://www.starwarsgalaxies.com"><em>Star Wars Galaxies</em></a>.<br />
<br />
The title is certainly a mouthful, and the amount of content looks to be equally chunky. The update features a return to the Feeorin pirate Nym's stronghold on the backwater barren known as Lok. One of the original themepark quest lines for the long-running MMO, Nym's has been revamped to feature additional side quests and new rewards, including the Jinkins J-1 Rifle, mounted Slugthrower decorations and Nym's logo rug.<br />
<br />
The update also features a new addition to the oft-neglected space-based portions of the game in the form of a piracy system that allows players to pull trade convoys out of hyperspace and pillage them for engines, shields, and all manner of shiny valuables. Finally, players can look forward to a new Email Collections reward - a display model of Nym's 'Havoc' starfighter. Check out the <a href="http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/en_US/players/content.vm?page=Current+update&amp;cid=EM3107&amp;_mid=3107&amp;_rid=3107.3001.39768">press release</a> for the full details on Game Update 16.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/26/swg-adds-space-piracy-revisits-lok/">SWG adds space piracy, revisits Lok</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 26 Mar 2010 11:30:00 EST. When new <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> players give up and quit the game, their reasons are usually very similar. A <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/22/eve-evolved-how-do-you-handle-burnout/">lack of drive to play the game is common</a>, with players logging in only to change skills. Similarly, people complain that <a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/208-Eve-Online">the game is boring</a> and isn't really taking them anywhere. Most of these reasons boil down to a basic lack of motivation, purpose and goals. As a sandbox game, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> doesn't really lead the player anywhere after the tutorials and it can be easy to get lost. This is where the <em>EVE</em> community steps in by providing a whole host of player-run corporations to help pilots find their way in <em>EVE</em>.<br />
<br />
As a very social game, I don't think <em>EVE</em> truly takes off <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/02/eve-evolved-finding-the-perfect-corporation-in-five-easy-steps/">until you get into a good corporation</a>. In addition to help and advice, a good corp with some solid corporate goals will offer players a sense of purpose and direction that can be hard to find on your own. The opportunity to be a part of something bigger than yourself and accomplish goals you could never hope to on your own can be a great motivator. Whether your corporation's goal is to build a freighter from scratch, run a massive industrial complex, engage in PvP or even lay claim to a system, it stands a much better chance of being achieved <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/11/eve-evolved-running-your-own-corporation/">when pilots cooperate</a>.<br />
<br />
In this opinion piece, I show how the whole can be greater than the sum of its parts as I look at a few of the goals corporations commonly work toward as a team.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/07/eve-evolved-the-importance-of-corporate-goals/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: The importance of corporate goals</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/07/eve-evolved-the-importance-of-corporate-goals/">EVE Evolved: The importance of corporate goals</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 07 Mar 2010 18:00:00 EST. Player housing is one of those features we love to see in an MMO but every game that has it seems to implement it differently. Sometimes it's limited to instanced rooms the player can decorate and sometimes it's a little more functional like shared guild halls. In <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>, the closest thing to widely-available player housing would be <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Starbase">anchorable starbases</a>, which can be configured to serve a variety of functional roles. Originally, their primary purpose was to mine moon minerals and <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Moon_mining">react them to produce advanced materials</a> for Tech 2 production.<br />
<br />
Starbases can be very useful as tactical staging points for PvP operations. With the right modules anchored around them, they can also be configured for use in other industries, from mining and manufacturing to research and deep space exploration. Until recently, they also played a critical role in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a>'s alliance sovereignty warfare as the alliance with the most starbases in a system gained control of it. With that role <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/01/massivelys-eve-dominion-launch-day-roundup/">now fulfilled by Outposts, Infrastructure Hubs and Territorial Claim Units</a>, starbases have mostly returned to their former industrial and tactical uses.<br />
<br />
In this article, I look at five different starbase configurations that can be very useful to organised corporations.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/14/eve-evolved-five-useful-starbase-configurations/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: Five useful starbase configurations</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/14/eve-evolved-five-useful-starbase-configurations/">EVE Evolved: Five useful starbase configurations</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 14 Feb 2010 18:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> is as much a setting as it is a massively multiplayer online game. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em>'s galaxy of New Eden</a> spans thousands of charted solar systems, with thousands more <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/26/eve-evolved-just-another-week-in-the-sleepers-den/">waiting to be discovered in the uncharted frontiers</a> reachable only through wormholes. For all the myriad opportunities New Eden offers players to explore and create, there are just as many risks. The dangers that other pilots can pose also provide memorable stories that few other MMOs can match. The outlaws of <em>EVE Online</em> halt the calming lull of mining lasers, inject some thrills into otherwise routine trade runs, and disrupt the rote completion of mission objectives. More often than not, encounters with New Eden's pirates will leave you with a pounding heart and surge of adrenaline to go along with the flaming wreckage of your ship, if not a one-way trip back to the cloning facility. They create that fear of what threats lie on the other side of the next star gate and ultimately set the tone for New Eden. But even among these criminals there are a few whose accomplishments truly stand out. <br />
<br />
The capsuleer called Mynxee is a well-known pirate in New Eden's underworld. Hers is a name remembered well by the many victims who've met their end under rapid fire from her autocannons. She is the founder and CEO of <a href="http://www.hellcatsofeve.com/">Hellcats</a>, an all-women pirate corporation in <em>EVE Online</em>, and a central figure in <em>EVE</em>'s criminal society. Outside of New Eden, Mynxee has built up quite a following through her <a href="http://lifeinlowsec.blogspot.com">Life in Low Sec</a> blog and is one of <em>EVE</em>'s more <a href="http://twitter.com/Mynxee">active pilots on Twitter</a> as well. If there is such an individual in New Eden that can be viewed <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/04/outlaws-of-eve-online-verone/">as its pirate king</a>, Mynxee is undoubtedly its queen. She first caught Massively's attention years ago with <a href="http://lifeinlowsec.blogspot.com/2008/07/flashy-red-dress.html">her flashy red dress</a> (size -10), but she's since become a pivotal figure in New Eden, popular with players from all walks of life in <em>EVE</em>. <br />
<br />
Massively recently spoke with Mynxee about the allure of being an outlaw, and how she has expanded the scope of her piracy -- bringing it out of the shadows of low security space and into the light, where players feel they are safest.<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/outlaws"><br />

Hellcats CEO and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> underworld celebrity <a href="http://lifeinlowsec.blogspot.com">Mynxee</a> had this to say about the event: <em>"This party is intended to express our appreciation of fans and friends plus give folks the chance to hang out, share stories, wave e-peens, and get to know each other. Of all the <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> stories I've heard over the years, none have impressed and inspired me as much as those detailing a well-planned corporate heist. These aren't your <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/30/wtb-scammer-tears-the-end-of-freeform-contract-scams-in-eve-onl/">run-of-the-mill contract scammers</a> or corp hanger thieves. A professional corporate spy can earn the deepest levels of trust, destroy a corporation from the inside out, rob its members of their most prized possessions and then disappear without a trace. They're the people that pull the strings of war in the background, pitting alliances against each other to meet their own ends. The <a href="http://eve.klaki.net/heist/">Guiding Hand Social Club's famous 2005 heist</a> remains to this day possibly the single most impressive story in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> history and serves as a benchmark of value and style for a heist that has seldom since been matched.<br /><br />When I'm not busy writing about <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span> or running sleeper anomalies with my buddies, I find myself delving more and more into the dark side of <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span>. From <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/16/eve-evolved-wormhole-piracy-101/">wormhole piracy</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/21/eve-evolved-using-courier-contracts-for-theft/">courier contract theft</a> to full-blown corporate infiltration, this year has bestowed on me a great deal of experience in the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/14/eve-evolved-eves-economic-underworld/">dirty underworld</a> of <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span>. In this article, I explain how to infiltrate a corp successfully and capitalise on the opportunities it throws at you.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/27/eve-evolved-corporate-infiltration-for-fun-and-profit/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: Corporate Infiltration for fun and profit</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/27/eve-evolved-corporate-infiltration-for-fun-and-profit/">EVE Evolved: Corporate Infiltration for fun and profit</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 27 Sep 2009 18:00:00 EST. We don't have any further details on the sovereignty revamp yet, but according to <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP</a> the changes have been made with subscriber feedback in mind, particularly through the player-elected <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/council-of-stellar-management">Council of Stellar Management</a>. <br /><br />Given that CCP Games is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514">tying more of <em>EVE Online</em>'s gameplay into the planets</a> of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/eve-visual-guide-the-birth-of-new-eden/">New Eden galaxy</a>, the next step they're taking with the Trinity graphics engine is to add more detail to these planets (and presumably moons).<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/31/eve-online-announces-dominion-expansion-walking-in-stations-r/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Online announces Dominion expansion, 'Walking in Stations' renamed Incarna</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/31/eve-online-announces-dominion-expansion-walking-in-stations-r/">EVE Online announces Dominion expansion, 'Walking in Stations' renamed Incarna</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 31 Aug 2009 16:45:00 EST. If it seems like I've gone wormhole crazy lately, that's because I have. The wormholes that arrived with the Apocrypha expansion have <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/22/eve-evolved-have-wormholes-revitalised-eve/">infiltrated and enriched</a> many different aspects of <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>, from exploration and corporate goals to small gang PvP and piracy. In previous articles, I looked at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/09/eve-evolved-gear-up-for-wormhole-exploration/">preparing for an expedition</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/19/eve-evolved-untangling-the-mystery-of-the-sleepers/">untangled the mystery of the Sleepers</a> and told the story of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/26/eve-evolved-just-another-week-in-the-sleepers-den/">a tense week for Total Comfort</a> alliance in the Sleeper's den. After a week spent hunting wormhole-dwellers for fun and profit, this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-evolved/"><em>EVE Evolved</em></a> is dedicated to the fine art of being an interstellar cut-throat as I delve into the world of wormhole piracy.<br /><br />Wormhole piracy is one of the few professions where small gang warfare is most prevalent. While many pirates have already begun <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/news.asp?a=single&amp;nid=3033&amp;tid=7">including wormhole systems</a> in their roaming gangs, our corporation (and I'm sure others) have come across a much more effective method. By setting up your own pirate <a href="http://eve-wormholes.blogspot.com/2009/08/this-space-occupied.html">staging base inside a wormhole system</a>, your corp can use its regular outgoing wormholes to wreak havoc in systems all across <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a>. Using this method, it's possible to spring attacks on people without anyone even seeing you coming. Whether you're planning surprise attacks on 0.0 systems or hunting in the 2500 new unknown sleeper systems, wouldn't you like to run your own pirate way-station?<br /><br />Read on for an informative guide on using wormholes to wreak havoc around <em>EVE</em> and make a profit in the process.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/16/eve-evolved-wormhole-piracy-101/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: Wormhole piracy 101</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/16/eve-evolved-wormhole-piracy-101/">EVE Evolved: Wormhole piracy 101</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 16 Aug 2009 18:00:00 EST. It's said that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/29/eve-online-the-butterfly-effect/">sandbox</a> MMO <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">EVE Online</span></a> doesn't really begin to shine until you <a href="http://www.eve-mag.com/wordpress/archives/recruiting-in-eve-more-than-you-think">join a good player-run corporation</a>. There's only so much a lone pilot can accomplish and a lot of the game's most rewarding experiences are based around groups and collaboration. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/19/eve-evolved-untangling-the-mystery-of-the-sleepers/">Wormhole expeditions</a>, PvP, territorial wars, politics and much of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span></a>'s other emergent gameplay routes rely heavily on forming groups and friendships in-game. In fact, I think you'd be hard pressed to find an MMO which doesn't have its game experience improved by group activities and forming friendships. But just as choosing the right corporation for your play style can make the game a lot better, choosing the wrong one or <a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/208-Eve-Online">not joining one at all can ruin a new player's experience</a> of the game.<br />
<br />
Over the past few weeks, I've had several emails from readers looking for advice on how to find a good corporation. In this article aimed at new and prospective <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span> players, I introduce a simple five-step approach for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/29/eve-online-the-butterfly-effect/">finding that perfect corporation</a> who can turn playing <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span> from a potentially boring experience into a very rewarding one.<br />

Although it's not a gaming podcast, their latest episode (#176) is all about <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>. The GWC hosts are apparently really into playing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> and they talk about the game's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/eve-visual-guide-the-birth-of-new-eden/">setting of New Eden</a> in the context of David Weber's <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honorverse">Honorverse</a> series of military sci-fi novels, drawing parallels between the two in terms of strategy and technology. They also discuss the things they've seen and done in their time in the game, from their first steps into (and fleeing from) PvP to a run-in with a virtual prostitute. (You're free to do many things in <em>EVE</em>'s sandbox... but <em>that</em> is probably not one of them.) <br /><br />The hosts are given a hand in relating what they've gotten from the game experience in <em>EVE Online</em> by two notable players. Ian Chisholm, the creator of the award-winning <a href="http://www.clearskiesthemovie.com">Clear Skies machinima</a> and its <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/10/clear-skies-2-has-been-released/">excellent follow-up</a>, explains how he tells his own stories in the game visually. He also discusses what drives him to invest so much of his time and effort into the projects, and the technical challenges in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/09/eve-online-meets-half-life-2-in-machinima-masterpiece/">making Clear Skies a reality</a>. A fantastic interview.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/27/gwc-podcast-interviews-eve-onlines-first-lady-of-piracy-and-cle/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GWC podcast interviews EVE Online's first lady of piracy and Clear Skies film maker</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/27/gwc-podcast-interviews-eve-onlines-first-lady-of-piracy-and-cle/">GWC podcast interviews EVE Online's first lady of piracy and Clear Skies film maker</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 27 Jul 2009 13:00:00 EST. Given the statements made by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/earthrise"><em>Earthrise</em></a> developer <a href="http://www.mastheadstudios.com">Masthead Studios</a> in the past, it's confirmed that full player looting will be both a driver and reward for PvP in this game. It's interesting to note that the inclusion of mechas in <em>Earthrise</em> will likely play a pivotal role in organized ganks or piracy of a sort. <br /><br />The <em>Earthrise</em> devs explained more about this today in "<a href="http://forums.play-earthrise.com/index.php?topic=4700.0">Mechas, Transit, and Loot</a>" on the game's official forums. The game's community manager Moll writes:<em> "Goliaths of steel used for combat and transit, mechas are definitely not invulnerable to damage and destruction. It takes a bit of effort, but even carefully planned and armed attacks can disrupt a planned resource transportation route and destroy a mecha."</em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/22/earthrise-devs-on-risk-vs-reward-with-mechas-in-organized-ganks/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Earthrise devs on risk vs. reward with mechas in organized ganks and looting</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/22/earthrise-devs-on-risk-vs-reward-with-mechas-in-organized-ganks/">Earthrise devs on risk vs. reward with mechas in organized ganks and looting</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 22 Jun 2009 19:00:00 EST. Many of <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">EVE Online</span></a>'s most prolific marketeers use <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Contracts#Courier">courier contracts</a> to collect together items from their region-wide buy orders but that's not all they can be used for. Courier contracts were originally intended as a way to pay another player to haul items for you securely using a standard collateral deal but if you know how, they can also be used for theft. Over the years, players have found ways to use courier contracts for profiteering, gambling, and even corporate theft. In <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span></a>'s Machiavellian universe, anything you can get away with is fair game. This includes twisting an innocuous game mechanic like courier contracts into a tool for theft and piracy.<br /><br />In this short article, I examine some of the more creative ways pilots have used courier contracts to steal and plunder their way to the top<span style="font-style: italic;"></span>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/21/eve-evolved-using-courier-contracts-for-theft/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: Courier contracts used for theft</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/21/eve-evolved-using-courier-contracts-for-theft/">EVE Evolved: Courier contracts used for theft</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 21 Jun 2009 20:00:00 EST. In fact we've noted an ever-increasing amount of excellent content out there, particularly among the <a href="http://www.crazykinux.com/2008/06/eve-online-blog-pack.html"><em>EVE</em> Blog Pack</a> that's either informative or entertaining, <a href="http://www.rifterdrifter.com/rifter-pvp-guide/">and often both</a>. The only downside, if there even is one, is that we don't get the chance to highlight as much of what people are doing out there quite as much as we'd like. Now and again though, we come across something that we feel really stands out and truly deserves a mention. <br /><br />This is the case with "<a href="http://00sage00.wordpress.com/2009/06/02/piloting-saaviness/">Piloting Savviness</a>", one condensed gem of a post by 00sage00 on his blog <a href="http://00sage00.wordpress.com/">Yarrbear Tales</a>. 00sage00's article is chock full of tips on how to improve your effectiveness as a pilot, ranging from pointers on knowing your ship and its limitations to gaining an an awareness of your opposition, as well as your surroundings. If you're an <em>EVE Online</em> player getting into PvP, <a href="http://00sage00.wordpress.com/2009/06/02/piloting-saaviness/">"Piloting Savviness" is a must-read</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/10/eve-online-article-on-piloting-savvy-a-condensed-gem-of-a-resour/">EVE Online article on piloting savvy a condensed gem of a resource</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 10 Jun 2009 10:00:00 EST. The game has a rich backstory behind it though; <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/eve-visual-guide-the-birth-of-new-eden/"><em>EVE</em>'s setting of New Eden</a> continually gains more depth and new dimensions through <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/background/potw/">bi-weekly Chronicles</a> written by <em>EVE</em> developer <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=lastposts&amp;cid=165905997">CCP Abraxas</a>. Since <em>EVE</em>'s players are ship-bound in actual gameplay (until <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/walking-in-stations">Walking in Stations</a></em> is released), the game's lore adds something that a number of pilots have gotten into, with player corporations and alliances siding with a given faction discussed in the backstory. A fair amount of the Chronicles focus on New Eden's four (playable) races and regimes -- and the <em>Empyrean Age</em> expansion <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/18/eve-evolved-has-faction-warfare-been-abandoned/">brought factional warfare into the game</a> -- but there are also a few notable criminal organizations presented in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a>'s lore. <br /><br />Perhaps the most disturbing among them is <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/The_Blood_Raiders_%28Chronicle%29">The Blood Raider Covenant</a>, a pirate NPC faction in the game that many <em>EVE</em> players know as their enemy through <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/quests">mission running</a>, exploration content, or simply 'ratting' in asteroid belts. <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Blood_Raider_Covenant">EVElopedia describes them</a> as <em>"a particularly gruesome sect of the generally reviled Sani Sabik cult. While all modern Sani Sabik rituals use blood in some manner or another, the Covenant places particular value on the blood of cloned humans, and is utterly ruthless in obtaining it, regularly boarding other spacecraft and abducting all aboard. From their base in <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Category:Delve_(Region)">Delve</a> they launch lightning raiding parties and surprisingly well coordinated incursions deep into <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Empire_Space">Empire space</a> in pursuit of their goals." </em>Their <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Blood_Raider_News">place in the game's lore</a> provides fertile ground for <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Of_God_and_her_Beast_%28Chronicle%29">mixing horror with sci-fi</a>. Some <em>EVE</em> players have even established corporations and alliances <a href="http://thedeceived.com/seraphim/">aligned with the Blood Raider Covenant</a> and the latest addition to <em>EVE</em>'s lore focuses on this bloodthirsty faction.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/19/eve-lore-blends-sci-fi-with-horror-in-blood-raiders-pirate-facti/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE lore blends sci-fi with horror in Blood Raiders pirate faction Chronicle</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/19/eve-lore-blends-sci-fi-with-horror-in-blood-raiders-pirate-facti/">EVE lore blends sci-fi with horror in Blood Raiders pirate faction Chronicle</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 19 May 2009 18:00:00 EST. This helps the game's lore creators conjure up a sense that the stories of New Eden <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/19/telling-more-engaging-stories-in-eve-online/">echo throughout and define a single expansive galaxy</a>, at least for those who choose to get into the game's backstory.<br /><br /><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a>'s lore has been building up for years as <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/background/">short Chronicles</a> and <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Eve-Empyrean-GollanczF-Tony-Gonzales/dp/0575080353/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1240082294&amp;sr=1-1">even in novel form</a>, creating a substantial yet growing body of work that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/05/eve-evolved-storytelling-in-eve-online/">fleshes out the gritty setting</a>. We don't cover all of the Chronicle releases at Massively but we do tend to highlight those that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/21/divinity-and-malevolence-personified-in-latest-eve-chronicle/">have a direct bearing on the game's lore</a>, rather than those that add flavor. Still, now and again a story comes along that really stands out. That was the case with this week's Chronicle titled "<a href="http://www.eveonline.com/background/potw/default.asp?cid=20-04-09">All These Lives are Fit to Ruin</a>" by CCP Abraxas, the description of which was one simple word: "Sabotage". This caught our interest and, in this writer's opinion after having read the Chronicle twice, "All These Lives are Fit to Ruin" may be one of the best stories Abraxas has written thus far.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/22/latest-eve-online-chronicle-a-moral-tale-of-sabotage-and-retribu/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Latest EVE Online Chronicle a moral tale of sabotage and retribution</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/22/latest-eve-online-chronicle-a-moral-tale-of-sabotage-and-retribu/">Latest EVE Online Chronicle a moral tale of sabotage and retribution</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 22 Apr 2009 11:00:00 EST. The learning curve has, in the past, dissuaded some MMO gamers from really digging in to <em>EVE</em>, but that curve has been getting a bit less steep as the tutorial improves. The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/06/massivelys-eve-online-apocrypha-expansion-hands-on/"><em>Apocrypha</em> expansion's New Player Experience</a> also aims to make those first weeks in New Eden easier. That said, the best resource available to new <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> players is the game's playerbase itself. It's always best to learn from others and when possible, <em>with</em> others. That's one of the unique things about <em>EVE</em> -- players form corporations for various purposes, one of which is to provide schools or academies where various facets of the game are taught by experienced players. Players can learn alongside others who share similar interests. <br /><br />You want to learn the ropes of the game? You can join <a href="http://www.eve-ivy.com">EVE University</a> and take part in their organized classes or listen to speakers on various topics in New Eden. Want to learn how to kick ass in PvP? Take a class at <a href="http://www.agony-unleashed.com/news.php">Agony Unleashed</a> and they'll turn you into a killer in no time. But <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/23/eve-university-celebrates-fifth-anniversary/">EVE University</a> and the other training-focused corps tend to focus on the more 'legitimate' aspects of the game. But what if you want a training course that lets you learn about and become part of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/15/the-7-deadly-sins-of-eve-online/">New Eden's criminal society</a>? There are options.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/16/the-black-rabbits-academy-teaches-piracy-in-eve-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Black Rabbits Academy teaches piracy in EVE Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/16/the-black-rabbits-academy-teaches-piracy-in-eve-online/">The Black Rabbits Academy teaches piracy in EVE Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 16 Apr 2009 18:00:00 EST. It's been just over a week since the Apocrypha expansion went live and <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">EVE Online</span></a> is already starting to see the impact of the new content on gameplay. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/09/eve-evolved-gear-up-for-wormhole-exploration/">Wormholes</a> in particular have revitalised gameplay for so many individuals that Apocrypha may just be the best <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span></a> expansion to date. Everything from piracy to low security space, system ownership and exploration have been affected by the advent of unstable wormholes. But how could something as simple as unstable wormholes <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/19/wormhole-exploration-hearkens-back-to-eve-onlines-early-days/">revitalise other areas of gameplay</a>?<br /><br />In this article, I examine the far-reaching effects of <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span>'s newest gameplay addition - <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/10/one-shots-beware-the-wormholes/">wormholes</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/22/eve-evolved-have-wormholes-revitalised-eve/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: Have wormholes revitalised EVE?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/22/eve-evolved-have-wormholes-revitalised-eve/">EVE Evolved: Have wormholes revitalised EVE?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 22 Mar 2009 19:00:00 EST. Given how integral alliance warfare is to gameplay, <em>EVE Online</em>'s annual <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/alliance-pvp-tournament">Alliance PvP Tournament</a> is a major event each year, watched by thousands of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/eve-visual-guide-the-birth-of-new-eden/">New Eden's pilots</a>. The sixth annual Alliance PvP Tournament for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> was one of the most exciting to date. Combatants employed clever ship setups and tactics, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/31/massively-interviews-crovan-about-eve-alliance-pvp-tournament-vi/">commentary was excellent</a>, and there was even a bit of drama thrown into the mix in the form of a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/01/eve-pvp-tournament-assassination-machiavellian-or-bad-form/">player assassination during the tournament</a>. In the end it was the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/08/pandemic-legion-crowned-eve-alliance-tournament-vi-champions/">Pandemic Legion alliance that reigned supreme</a> and a permanent monument to their victory has been set up in the Amamake solar system, where the <a href="https://www.pandemic-legion.com/">Pandemic Legion</a> corporation Sniggerdly started out as pirates. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.eve-tribune.com/">EVE Tribune</a> writer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/miyamoto-isoruku">Miyamoto Isoruku</a> recently had a chance to interview the leader of Pandemic Legion, Shamis Orzoz. They discuss a wide range of topics, ranging from the tactics used in Alliance PvP Tournament VI to Orzoz's views on player-politics and the state of alliance warfare in New Eden. This player-elected <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/council-of-stellar-management">Council of Stellar Management</a> works with the sci-fi title's developer, CCP Games, to ensure that the game design and balancing of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> reflects the interests of the subscribers. Player politics related to a divisive community of gamers can be complicated, however. <br /><br />Since its inception, the <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/What_is_the_CSM">Council of Stellar Management</a> has faced intense criticism and no small amount of skepticism about how effective they will ultimately be. In other words -- <em>EVE</em>'s Council of Stellar Management is a fairly accurate simulation of how the public reacts to real-world governance. Still, some of the original CSM delegates chose to stick it out and seek re-election for a second term. One of those delegates, now in his second term in office, is LaVista Vista. He's well-known to the <em>EVE</em> community for his level-headed approach to balancing the game and his experience with the different 'walks of life' of <em>EVE</em>'s playstyles. <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&amp;threadID=900554">These qualities make him an ideal representative</a> of the interests of the players themselves and it came as little surprise that he was re-elected. <br /><br />Massively recently caught up with LaVista Vista, who was happy to discuss some of his experiences as a dedicated <em>EVE</em> player as well as a Council of Stellar Management representative.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/03/eve-community-spotlight-lavista-vista/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Community Spotlight: LaVista Vista</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/03/eve-community-spotlight-lavista-vista/">EVE Community Spotlight: LaVista Vista</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 03 Mar 2009 16:00:00 EST. Whether you like <em><a href="http://www.eve-online.com">EVE Online</a></em> or hate it, I think everyone can agree that it's a visually stunning game. Combined with the enthralling PvP experiences to be had in the game, it's not surprising that the game lends itself well to making <a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp?a=channel&amp;channelID=29045">some excellent videos</a>. Films of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/">EVE</a></em> gameplay have been around since <em>EVE</em> began and large fleets now routinely bring a camera specialist pilot in a cloaked covert ops frigate to film their action. With the release of the premium client and the proliferation of good video editing software, the quality of <a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp?a=channel&amp;channelID=29045"><em>EVE</em> videos</a> has improved significantly over the past few years.<br /><br />In this article, I run down my list of the top ten <em>EVE</em> videos of all time.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/02/eve-evolved-the-top-ten-eve-videos-of-all-time/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: The top ten EVE videos of all time</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/02/eve-evolved-the-top-ten-eve-videos-of-all-time/">EVE Evolved: The top ten EVE videos of all time</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 02 Feb 2009 17:30:00 EST. But it's not everyday that a short film as good as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/08/massively-interviews-clear-skies-creator-ian-chisholm/">Clear Skies</a> or <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/07/eve-online-films-nominated-for-machinima-filmfest-2008-awards/">Havoc</a> comes along. Then again, it's also not every day that something created by a player draws accolades from the game's creators -- but that's exactly the case with the work of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online "><em>EVE</em></a> player Kyoko Sakoda, in "<a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&amp;threadID=974250 ">War Has Come</a>" -- which beautifully captures the game, set to a cover of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower."<br /> <br />Sakoda writes, <em>"This is one of my first thematic works. I know the Bear McCreary version of the song may sound like it is out of place for a few hardcore sci-fi fans, but I could not justify using any other cover. Enjoy, and write feedback if you wish. I'm always looking to improve my storytelling, direction, and editing and compositing skills." </em><br /><br />We've got "War Has Come" embedded for you below the cut, and it's well worth a look. We just wish Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" was a longer song...<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/28/stunning-eve-machinima-depicts-struggle-between-new-edens-facti/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Stunning EVE machinima depicts struggle between New Eden's factions</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/28/stunning-eve-machinima-depicts-struggle-between-new-edens-facti/">Stunning EVE machinima depicts struggle between New Eden's factions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 28 Jan 2009 10:00:00 EST. <div align="center"><em>You killed KIA. You bastards!</em><br /></div>
<br />The <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> Alliance PvP Tournament returned this past weekend, guns blazing. The first qualifying round is now finished, huge <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/isk">bets in ISK</a> were won and lost, and the competitors are preparing themselves for next weekend's face-offs. There were some good fights, and some surprises as well. When the relatively new pirate alliance "<a href="http://www.the-bastards.com/">The Bastards</a>" went toe to toe against <a href="http://killboard.kia-clan.info/?a=home">KIA Alliance</a> -- a formidable mercenary alliance in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> comprised of seasoned combat pilots, many players assumed KIA would win. Those assumptions were wrong -- The Bastards scored a decisive victory against their opponents, no doubt to the chagrin of many players who bet against the pirates. <br /><br />One combatant from The Bastards, a career pirate (in <em>EVE</em>) named "<a href="http://i-pirate.blogspot.com/">Flashfresh</a>", wrote about the experience of preparing to face some heavy competition from KIA Alliance and how their time spent in training paid off. <a href="http://i-pirate.blogspot.com/2009/01/am-very-proud-of-bastards.html">Flashfresh wrote</a>: <em>"This afternoon, the team was announced, moved to a staging area and the Ventrilo server became a cacophony of mad noise. The rest (including me) cheered ourselves hoarse. There was no worry or fear amongst the Bastards team; no talk about the opposition only on how we were going to do. The entire corp had volunteered time and resources to train and train and train. We were ready."</em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/27/pirate-underdogs-victorious-in-first-round-of-eve-alliance-pvp-t/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Pirate underdogs victorious in first round of EVE Alliance PvP Tournament</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/27/pirate-underdogs-victorious-in-first-round-of-eve-alliance-pvp-t/">Pirate underdogs victorious in first round of EVE Alliance PvP Tournament</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 27 Jan 2009 12:00:00 EST. Being an outlaw in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><span style="font-style: italic;">EVE Online's</span></a> setting of New Eden isn't just about prowess in combat. For some, the pull of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/15/the-7-deadly-sins-of-eve-online/">New Eden's underworld</a> is all about the social fabric of the game... and how to exploit it. Deception is their greatest weapon, and paired with the endless opportunities for social engineering in <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span>, that weapon can be put to devastating use. Among all of the conmen and scam artists in New Eden, there's one name that conjures up more rage and misery than most others: <em>Miz Cenuij</em>. <br /><br />From the earliest days of New Eden, Miz was on the path to becoming a major antagonist in <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span>. While some players love him, most just love to hate him, and he wouldn't have it any other way. Over time, Miz has become one of New Eden's most notorious thieves and hell raisers, an evil celebrity of sorts. His manipulations have triggered alliance wars, brought him numerous <a href="http://www.eve-search.com/thread/594437/page/1">threats from other pilots</a>, thousands of <a href="http://www.battleclinic.com/eve_online/pk/view/player-Miz+Cenuij-kills.html">confirmed kills</a>, and raked in a fantastic amount of wealth in the process. His preferred modus operandi in <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span> is the long con, but since he learned to convert his wealth into influence over others, he's found that corruption and practiced deception make a formidable combination. As if a counter to restlessness, his apparent goal of keeping New Eden set in motion, <a href="http://www.eve-search.com/thread/594339/page/1#1">if not set ablaze</a>, has ensured that Miz Cenuij lives on a steady diet of tears and rage.<br /><br />Massively caught up with Miz Cenuij, who told us what motivates him to engage in activities that oppose the interests of so many other citizens of New Eden, and why he enjoys igniting controversy in <em>EVE</em>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/12/outlaws-of-eve-online-miz-cenuij/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Outlaws of EVE Online: Miz Cenuij</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/12/outlaws-of-eve-online-miz-cenuij/">Outlaws of EVE Online: Miz Cenuij</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 12 Nov 2008 17:00:00 EST. One of the big lures to <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> is the fact that its PvP isn't just shoehorned into consensual duels and battlegrounds. Instead, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> PvP can occur anywhere whether you like it or not and punishments are levied after-the-fact for engaging in unsanctioned combat in designated safe areas. In <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/19/eve-evolved-pvp-masterclass-introduction/">the previous three parts</a> of this exhaustive guide on where you can take your PvP career, I described the different types of PvP <em>EVE</em> has to offer from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/26/eve-evolved-pvp-masterclass-gang-warfare/">small gang warfare</a> to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/02/eve-evolved-pvp-masterclass-fleet-warfare/">massive territorial fleets</a>. In this final part, I explore <em>EVE</em>'s evil side as I talk about piracy and corporate infiltration.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Griefing?:</span><br />In most MMOs, stealing from other players or indiscriminately killing them for fun or profit can be considered griefing and may be against the rules <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/21/dutch-court-convicts-2-minors-of-stealing-virtual-items/">or worse</a>. In the cold, harsh universe of New Eden, however, piracy and theft are just another facet of the complex player-based gameplay. From <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/25/surviving-gatecamps-in-eve-online/">the common gatecamping pirate</a> to the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/7-deadly-sins-of-eve-online/978792/">criminal masterminds</a> behind the Guiding Hand Social Club heist, players of all kinds are drawn into the criminal underworld of <em>EVE Online</em>.<br /><br />If piracy, theft and corporate infiltration sounds like your cup of tea, continue reading as I delve into the dark side of <em>EVE Online</em>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/09/eve-evolved-pvp-masterclass-the-dark-side/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: PvP masterclass - The dark side</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/09/eve-evolved-pvp-masterclass-the-dark-side/">EVE Evolved: PvP masterclass - The dark side</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 09 Nov 2008 20:00:00 EST. For those who like how busy the official forums are, but not the rules that govern it, there's <a href="http://www.scrapheap-challenge.com/">Scrapheap Challenge</a>. SH-C is a forum which is chiefly dedicated to discussing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a>, but not moderated by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> themselves. Recent months, however, have seen a large number of <em>EVE</em> players striking out on their own, with their own blogs that focus on a particular aspect of the game linked to that blogger's playstyle. Industry, finance, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/piracy">piracy</a>, 0.0 alliance warfare, and now even <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/boosters">boosters</a> (drugs) are being written about on a daily basis.<br /><br />While over 100 of these blogs are out there, the more prolific among them have joined under the banner of CrazyKinux's <a href="http://www.crazykinux.com/2008/06/eve-online-blog-pack.html">Blog Pack</a>. By all accounts, it's been a successful community effort by <em>EVE</em> players, and now CrazyKinux is adding another dimension to the Blog Pack: conversation topics that are collectively tackled by the various bloggers, called "Blog Banter." The <a href="http://www.crazykinux.com/2008/10/eve-blog-banter-1-exotic-dancers.html">first Blog Banter got underway</a> this past week, and the first issue up for discussion has been a timely one: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/walking-in-stations"><em>EVE's</em> <em>Walking in Stations</em> expansion</a>, formerly known as <em>Ambulation</em>, which <a href="http://www.eve-online.com/fanfest/2008/ ">Fanfest attendees</a> will get to try out firsthand in just a few more days. The question itself was <a href="http://psychediver.blogspot.com/">proposed by PsycheDiver</a>, who asked, <em>"Ambulation: What are your hopes for your avatar and new functionality of stations?"</em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/02/eve-blog-banter-discusses-walking-in-stations-expansion/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE 'Blog Banter' discusses Walking in Stations expansion</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/02/eve-blog-banter-discusses-walking-in-stations-expansion/">EVE 'Blog Banter' discusses Walking in Stations expansion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 02 Nov 2008 16:10:00 EST. PvP Masterclass is a series of articles explaining <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/20/eve-and-sun-tzus-the-art-of-war/">PvP from the bottom up</a> and showing you how to get involved even if you're a new player. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/19/eve-evolved-pvp-masterclass-introduction/">In part 1 of this series</a>, I examined the main types of PvP a player can choose in <em><a href="http://www.eve-online.com">EVE Online</a></em> and showed the directions players can take their PvP careers. In this second part, I explore how small gang warfare fits into the PvP landscape of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/" style="font-style: italic;">EVE</a> and help you decide what avenues you should pursue if small gang warfare is your cup of tea.<br /><br /><strong>Numbers game:</strong><br />A complaint I hear all too often today is that small gang warfare in <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span> is dead, that PvP is a numbers game and competing on the battlefield means <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/26/eve-evolved-to-blob-or-not-to-blob/">having the biggest blob</a>. It almost always transpires that these people are trying to shoehorn small gang warfare into places it's not suited for like major 0.0 territorial conflicts or that they're neglecting the importance of intel-gathering scouts. Small gang warfare isn't about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/12/eve-evolved-the-nano-problem/">your gang of five ships trying to take on a blob of two hundred</a>. It's about putting together a small, tight unit of pilots and picking your fights carefully.<br /><br />Whether you're planning to pirate, fight for the Gallente Federation or declare war on your neighbours, small gang warfare is for you. Read on as I examine the small roaming gang, one of <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span>'s oldest and most fun avenues of PvP.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/26/eve-evolved-pvp-masterclass-gang-warfare/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: PvP masterclass - Gang warfare</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/26/eve-evolved-pvp-masterclass-gang-warfare/">EVE Evolved: PvP masterclass - Gang warfare</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 26 Oct 2008 17:30:00 EST. Only in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a>, you don't just respawn and all's well. There's often more... drama... involved. A ship lost, implants obliterated, screams of it being unfair or <em>"Whyyyy?!"</em> echo in Local or on the forums. This can be a brutal game at times, and most every player in <em>EVE</em> learns their lessons the hard way. Much of what's said on this is typically from the perspective of the victim. But what about the person behind those guns? Is it always easy for them to pull the trigger? <br /><br /><em>EVE Online</em> blogger <a href="http://blackclawtravels.blogspot.com/">Black Claw</a> addresses that sense of regret that carebears go through when turning towards piracy in "<a href="http://blackclawtravels.blogspot.com/2008/10/feeling-guilty.html ">Feeling guilty?</a>" After all, many pirates were once the 'innocent' victims of someone else when they were starting out. Black Claw writes about what it's like to make the transition from a PvP victim to a killer.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/25/learning-to-pull-the-trigger-in-eve-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Learning to pull the trigger in EVE Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/25/learning-to-pull-the-trigger-in-eve-online/">Learning to pull the trigger in EVE Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 25 Oct 2008 12:00:00 EST. <br />One of the most perplexing things about <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">EVE Online</span></a> has to be the fact that although the game is essentially designed around PvP, a lot of players avoid it entirely. In this new series of articles, I will explain PvP from the bottom up, with a particular focus on helping anyone that has always wanted to give <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span></a>'s high quality PvP a try but wasn't sure what to do. In this first article, I examine the different types of PvP available in <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE Online</span> and suggest ways to get involved in them even if you're just finishing the <a href="https://secure.eve-online.com/trial/">14-day trial</a>.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Types of PvP:</span><br /><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pvp/">In most MMOs, PvP</a> means organised battleground matches or one versus one player duels. For those games lucky enough to have open world PvP, the options are a lot more varied. In <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE Online</span>, the exact right combination of factors come together to create what on a good day I can only describe as the best PvP experience I have ever had in a computer game. Rather than just being something fun to do, PvP in <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span> arises as a natural consequence of normal play, used by players to <a href="http://scratchpad.roaringshrimp.com/?m=200710">push forward their own agenda in a harsh, dismal space-borne society</a>.<br /><br />Continue reading as I help you choose which type of PvP suits you the best and suggest ways to get involved in it.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/19/eve-evolved-pvp-masterclass-introduction/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: PvP masterclass - Introduction</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/19/eve-evolved-pvp-masterclass-introduction/">EVE Evolved: PvP masterclass - Introduction</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 19 Oct 2008 18:00:00 EST.
