If you've ever tried to draw a map of the Earth from memory, you know that it's a difficult task, and yet I suspect that most of us could easily sketch out a map of the landmasses and cities of our favorite MMOs. While most MMOs scale significantly smaller than our real-world capitals, they're no less memorable. In fact, some cities practically serve as symbols of the game, from <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/City-of-Heroes/">City of Heroes'</a></em> Paragon City to <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Guild-Wars/">Guild Wars'</a></em> Lion's Arch to <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/World-of-Warcraft/">World of Warcraft's</a></em> Stormwind. Be they hubs of commerce, zones for party-forming, or home to all your phat loots, we could probably navigate them blindfolded.<br />
<br />
Today we ask: What's the most iconic MMO city (and could you map it from memory)?<br />
<br />

It's been anything but a quiet weekend in my neck of the woods. I'm currently writing this with no real ETA on when I'm going to have power back, which is a bit of an issue considering that my job sort of requires a functional internet connection and a computer to type and play things on. Also, there was a hurricane that sort of prompted that string of events, which made things all sorts of interesting and has led to a variety of interesting circumstances at home and abroad. In short, thank you, but I could really do without living in these particular interesting times.<br />
<br />
You know what was remarkably quiet, however? <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/PAX-Prime-2011/">PAX Prime</a>.<br />
<br />
OK, that's not true; there was a lot of interesting information to be seen on display over the course of the event, not the least of which being previews of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/WildStar/">WildStar</a></em>, which only increased my enthusiasm for the title. But for me and my fellow <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/City-of-Heroes/">City of Heroes</a></em> fans, despite the game's staff's having a definite presence, there wasn't a whole lot to be said about the proceedings that I saw. (Admittedly, that may have something to do with the fact that, as mentioned, I'm kind of limited in my current ability to correspond with the outside world.) So what happened? When did <em>City of Heroes</em> fall off the radar?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/31/a-mild-mannered-reporter-paxflop/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A Mild-Mannered Reporter: PAXflop</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/31/a-mild-mannered-reporter-paxflop/">A Mild-Mannered Reporter: PAXflop</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 31 Aug 2011 14:30:00 EST. The low-level gangs that heroes face in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/City-of-Heroes/">City of Heroes</a></em> follow a pretty set pattern. At the absolute bottom are street thugs with a little bit of superhuman muscle at the very top, just enough to remind you that you are in a city swarming with mutants and magic and all of that fun stuff. One step up, however, and you start to find gangs that are just a little more vicious, ones that genuinely couldn't thrive at all outside of the superheroic milieu. That's where the Trolls sit -- as a group of legitimately superhuman street thugs mostly kept in line by their own issues.<br />
<br />
The Trolls are most likely the first villain group out of the starter areas that you'll encounter in numbers, if for no other reason than the simple fact that they're swarming the Hollows. You're also likely to start running into them if you deal with the Skulls long enough because the Skulls are what keeps the Trolls up and running. Trolls aren't like their lower-level counterparts -- they suffer from a disease, and feeding that ailment is the source of their power and reputation.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/24/a-mild-mannered-reporter-spotlight-on-the-trolls/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A Mild-Mannered Reporter: Spotlight on the Trolls</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/24/a-mild-mannered-reporter-spotlight-on-the-trolls/">A Mild-Mannered Reporter: Spotlight on the Trolls</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 24 Aug 2011 19:00:00 EST. </a></div>
Today sees the launch of <em><a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/">World of Warcraft</a>: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cataclysm/">Cataclysm</a></em>, which represents a destructive "reboot" button on the world of Azeroth. The old has been made new by virtue of fiery explosions that have rent the very earth in twain, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft/"><em>WoW</em></a> gamers will have to find their footing all over again. As you might imagine, it's made one big-ass mess, which is compounded by the fact that there are no janitor classes in the game to sweep it up (the next hero class, perhaps?).<br />
<br />
However, the notion of an in-game cataclysm is hardly the sole domain of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/activision-blizzard/">Activision-Blizzard</a>; on the contrary, large-scale apocalypses pop up all the time in MMOs. After all, nothing grabs the attention like the end of the world (but hey, you still feel fine)!<br />

In a list that in no way is meant to capitalize on any expansions that may or may not be on the market, we're going to strap on our Kevlar suits, slather our arms with 1000 SPF sunblock, and take a brief tour of 10 worlds that have dated cataclysms -- and lived to tell the tale.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/07/the-perfect-ten-mmo-cataclysms/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Perfect Ten: MMO cataclysms</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/07/the-perfect-ten-mmo-cataclysms/">The Perfect Ten: MMO cataclysms</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 07 Dec 2010 13:00:00 EST. How precisely <em>does</em> a hero face off against a ghost in the machine? Well, if you're lucky, you'll never have to face one in Paragon City, but once in a great while, one still slips through. Take, for example, this oddball "haunting" that recently occurred on a fairly innocent corner in <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com"><em>City of Heroes</em></a>. Reporting in today is Cube, who believes he may have figured out what the source of this particular anomaly is:<br />
<br />
"<em>This is me on my tanker, Blood Brother Eldred. With me are Alisha Shatogi (the lovely lady in the trenchcoat), and DJ Aerial. There have been a few issues with Paragon City's mail system over the past few days, and I think we've found out why. It seems that Aerial's pet Singularity/Disco Ball (affectionally named George) managed to find his way into a mailbox. It looks like the folks at the Paragon City Postal Service have their work cut out for them..</em>."<br />

If there's been a complaint about the visuals for the upcoming <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> expansion, it's that <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com/goingrogue"><em>Going Rogue</em></a> will be sticking characters in yet another cityscape. On the most technical level, that's true. However, compared to the utilitarian New England city areas in Paragon City and the urban decay of the Rogue Isles, the sweeping curves and smooth designs of Praetoria couldn't be more different. And even if the visuals from the newest reveal don't grab you, there's still a wealth of information in the latest official disclosures on the expansion's site.<br />
<br />
Nova Praetoria is the heart of the world's administration and the most exclusive neighborhood ever. (It's the equivalent of the President asking you to move in next door, if the President ran the entire planet and could bend cars in half with his hands.) In a parody of the omnipresent memorials to lost heroes in Paragon City, Nova Praetoria is dotted with statues celebrating the still-living Praetors. The Underground, directly beneath the district, was created to avoid any sight of the day-to-day maintenance of the city -- but it's since become a haven for the movement against Cole and his empire. Take a look at our gallery below for more of the visual awesomeness.<br />

There's just a little more than a month left until <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> players get to take the new expansion for a spin, and <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com/goingrogue"><em>Going Rogue</em></a>'s promotions have been stepped up accordingly. Oddly, while the art direction, storytelling, and mechanical aspects of the expansion have all gotten significant attention, we've heard very little about the music that will be expected to set the mood. But if you really want to know, there's no need to speculate -- the soundtrack is <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com/news/news_archive/going_rogue_soundtrack_now_ava.html">already available for purchase</a>.<br />
<br />
Available both on <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/city-heroes-going-rogue-original/id381853569">iTunes</a> and <a href="http://www.amazon.com/City-Heroes-Going-Rogue-Soundtrack/dp/B003VFMXD8">Amazon</a> (albeit slightly cheaper on Amazon), the soundtrack contains 13 pieces composed by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Jason-Graves/">Jason Graves</a>, previously of <em>Dead Space </em>and <em>Command &amp; Conquer 4</em> fame. The previews available suggest a highly orchestral and high-energy collection of pieces, with each piece giving a distinct and different feel from the familiar melodies of the Rogue Isles and Paragon City. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Going-Rogue/"><em>Going Rogue</em></a> players may well want to pick up the soundtrack, as it's only a few bucks and should conjure some engaging images for future <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/City-of-Heroes/">City of Heroes</a></em> adventures.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/13/city-of-heroes-going-rogue-soundtrack-available-on-itunes-and-am/">City of Heroes Going Rogue soundtrack available on iTunes and Amazon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 13 Jul 2010 18:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> has the best pseudo-seasonal event anywhere: the double XP weekend. Forget holidays that you're usually sick to death of in which you can get some arbitrary gimmick powers, it's cold hard character boosting that really gets everyone excited. And if those of us that play the game weren't swimming with enough alts, we also had our chance to scream up with dual pistols. In summary, it was poised to be the best Christmas ever, except for the minor detail of not being Christmas. <br />
<br />
Going into the weekend on Friday. I had three major priorities. I wanted to level one of my two "mains" which had been suffering from some neglect, I wanted to bring a villain to 20 or as close as I could manage, and I wanted someone with paired handguns. A tall order, even for a doubled-up weekend, but I live for challenges. Or I'm a glutton for punishment, one or the other. Read on past the break for the path of events and some observations about the leveling game, and perhaps even a bit of enlightenment.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/10/a-mild-mannered-reporter-tripping-the-xp-fantastic/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A Mild-Mannered Reporter: Tripping the XP fantastic</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/10/a-mild-mannered-reporter-tripping-the-xp-fantastic/">A Mild-Mannered Reporter: Tripping the XP fantastic</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 10 Mar 2010 12:30:00 EST. Welcome to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/A-Mild-Mannered-Reporter/">A Mild-Mannered Reporter</a>, Massively's new weekly column all about <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com"><em>City of Heroes</em></a>! We were originally going to spin you a dynamic yarn about how I had watched my parents die, then spent years training in secret to strike fear into the hearts of criminals by writing about video games, but that was eliminated during the concept stage due to copyright infringement. Instead, we're just going with a column.<br />
<br />
For our first installment, we're highlighting a number of sites that are useful in one way or another to the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/City-of-Heroes/">City of Heroes</a></em> playerbase. While the game has enjoyed quite a lifespan, the web presence on it has been a bit more limited than some other games, probably due in no small part to the fact that it's much easier to simply pick up and play. That doesn't mean there's nothing here, though -- the community has developed a number of excellent tools and community gathering points to improve everyone's experience in <a href="http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Paragon_City">Paragon City</a> or the <a href="http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Rogue_Isles">Rogue Isles</a>. Take a look at what we've looked at and see as the highlights.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/27/a-mild-mannered-reporter-community-guide-to-city-of-heroes/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A Mild-Mannered Reporter: Community guide to City of Heroes</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/27/a-mild-mannered-reporter-community-guide-to-city-of-heroes/">A Mild-Mannered Reporter: Community guide to City of Heroes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 27 Jan 2010 16:00:00 EST. In <a href="http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Paragon_City">Paragon City</a>, the living embodiment of what it means to be a superhero is <a href="http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Statesman">Statesman</a>. And it's hard to argue with that -- he's a combination of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superman">Superman</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_america">Captain America</a> in one superhuman package, the apex of what a hero can aspire to be. But in the upcoming <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> expansion, <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com/goingrogue/"><em>Going Rogue</em></a>, the man behind the mask took a very different turn. Tyrant is neither villain nor hero, but a dictator whose rule over a parallel Earth is absolute. He has created a utopian, flawless world, held in place by his strength of arms and of will. And to no great surprise, he's received <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com/goingrogue/en/lore_tyrant.html">a full writeup</a> on the official <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/City-of-Heroes/">City of Heroes</a></em> page for the upcoming expansion.<br />
<br />
Tyrant's timeline is a far darker one than took place in the real world, including the deployment of nuclear weapons in the Korean War and a full-scale onslaught of enraged elementals. His full biography traces an alternate history in a way that at least provides a glimpse into the mind of someone who chose to enforce world peace through absolute control, highlighting many of the moral gray areas on display in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Going-Rogue/">Going Rogue</a></em>. <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com/goingrogue/en/lore_tyrant.html">Read the full dossier here</a>, and perhaps start designing a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justice_Lords">Justice Lord</a> costume for your favorite hero.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/23/city-of-heroes-unveils-the-full-biography-of-tyrant/">City of Heroes unveils the full biography of Tyrant</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 23 Jan 2010 20:00:00 EST. It's been a quiet week on <a href="http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Croatoa">Lake Salamanca</a>... well, actually, all across <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com"><em>City of Heroes</em></a>, when you get right down to it. For those of us not on the inside, it looked as if nothing of interest was happening with the game. But that's apparently quite far from the truth, since it appears there have been <a href="http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=206504">quite a few internal shakeups</a> over the holiday season and most of the month.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Matt-Miller/">Matt Miller</a>, longtime lead designer of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/City-of-Heroes/">City of Heroes</a></em>, has passed the mantle on to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Melissa-Bianco/">Melissa Bianco</a>. Miller is continuing to work on the game, but will be involved in rather vaguely-described endgame systems as well as some undisclosed projects. Bianco (also known as "War Witch" in keeping with the developer nicknaming scheme) has already <a href="http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/3/feature/3946/New-Lead-Designer-Interview.html">given an interview</a> on her plans and the state of <em>CoH</em>, with promises of new content before and after <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com/goingrogue"><em>Going Rogue</em></a> goes live.<br />
<br />
And speaking of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Going-Rogue/">Going Rogue</a></em>, we're promised <a href="http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=206504">more frequent pieces of information</a> on the expansion, which has seen very little revealed since its announcement. There's also an opportunity to take part in <a href="http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=206472">a community Q&amp;A with Bianco</a>. The quiet week seems to be over... which is really for the best, when you get right down to it.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/21/city-of-heroes-unveils-new-lead-designer/">City of Heroes unveils new lead designer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 21 Jan 2010 18:00:00 EST. It's holiday time in both <a href="http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Paragon_City">Paragon City</a> and the <a href="http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Rogue_Isles">Rogue Isles</a>, and that means it's time for players of <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> to celebrate the occasion. We <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/16/massivelys-2009-winter-holiday-event-guide/">recently discussed</a> the game's <a href="http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Winter_Event_2009">holiday event</a>, which is of course how the characters in the game get to enjoy the start of the winter months. But what about the players behind the keyboard, the ones who may very well have donated to charitable causes and deserve something nice themselves this holiday season? Well, perhaps if you're blessed with a spot of luck and the spirit of the season, you could win some decorations for yourself and your environment in the game's <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com/news/contests_promos/the_city_of_heroes_holiday_con.html">holiday contest</a>.<br />
<br />
The contest has two categories, for most festive costume and most festively-decorated base, with three winners per category. Prizes include hero and villain pins, some of the limited-edition <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/City-of-Heroes/">City of Heroes</a></em> fifth-anniversary t-shirts, and a few other nice toys. All that's required for entry is to take two screenshots of your character's costume or your decorated base and submit them by January 3rd, which means that everyone in the game has both time an inclination to get into the spirit of things. Read <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com/news/contests_promos/the_city_of_heroes_holiday_con.html">the official rules</a> for more details, and get a little something back for your superhuman antics being seasonally appropriate.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/17/city-of-heroes-offers-holiday-contest/">City of Heroes offers holiday contest</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 17 Dec 2009 20:00:00 EST. NCsoft has more info about <em>Issue 15</em> on their <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com/news/game_updates/issue_15/issue_15_overview.html"><em>Anniversary</em> overview site</a>, and asks, <em>"What does the opening of the Omega Team Time Capsule hold in store for Paragon City and the Rogue Isles?"</em> The answers, we suspect, should be clear as <em>City of Heroes</em> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-villains"><em>City of Villains</em></a> players explore the new <em>Issue 15</em> content.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/29/the-5th-column-returns-as-city-of-heroes-issue-15-anniversary-g/">The 5th Column returns as City of Heroes Issue 15: Anniversary goes live</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 29 Jun 2009 15:00:00 EST. Along with that announcement and an <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com/news/game_updates/issue_15/issue_15_overview.html">overview of the <em>Issue 15</em> features</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/paragon-studios">Paragon Studios</a> senior designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bruce-harlick">Bruce Harlick</a> has written a developer diary titled "A Circle of Fifths: Designing the Ultimate Fifth Anniversary Task Force and Strike Force" <br /><br />Harlick writes that when Paragon Studios was hashing through ideas for the game's strike force and task force for the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-heroes"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> 5th Anniversary, bringing the 5th Column back to Paragon City seemed the right thing to do. It also lets them bring <a href="http://cityofheroes.wikia.com/wiki/Reichsman">The Reichsman</a> into the game, leading to some interesting mission arcs. Harlick writes, <em>"I didn't want the two arcs to be simple mirrors of each others, with the villains doing something and the heroes stopping it." He adds, "I wanted the villains to succeed with their plan and to deal with the consequences, and I wanted the heroes to deal with an emerging big problem." </em><br /><br />Have a look at <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com/news/game_updates/issue_15/developer_diary_2.html">Bruce Harlick's developer diary on <em>City of Heroes Issue 15: Anniversary</em></a>, for more about what he describes as <em>"a story that's worthy of the return of one of the biggest threats to ever hit Paragon City and the Rogue Islands."</em><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/city-of-heroes-issue-15-anniversary/">City of Heroes Issue 15: Anniversary</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/city-of-heroes-issue-15-anniversary/#2074315"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/06/screenshot_2009-05-20-15-50-03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/city-of-heroes-issue-15-anniversary/#2074314"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/06/screenshot_2009-05-19-14-29-58_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/city-of-heroes-issue-15-anniversary/#2074310"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/06/screenshot_2009-05-19-14-16-43_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/city-of-heroes-issue-15-anniversary/#2074309"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/06/coh_issue15_faces_male_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/city-of-heroes-issue-15-anniversary/#2074307"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/06/coh_issue15_faces_female_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/29/city-of-heroes-senior-designer-bruce-harlick-on-return-of-the-5t/">City of Heroes senior designer Bruce Harlick on return of The 5th Column</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 29 May 2009 15:30:00 EST. <div align="left">Yes another one of NCSoft's MMOs is celebrating its birthday this week and this time it's <a href="http://massively.com/tags/city-of-heroes"><em>City of Heroes</em></a>. Celebrating its fifth birthday on April 28th and continuing through May, the devs have plenty planned in an attempt to reward existing players and tempt back lapsed heroes and villains to Paragon City.<br /><br />Whilst being vague about exactly what's going on, the devs have an in-game event planned beginning 11am EDT on April 28th. Apparently 'all CHAOS is going to break loose' until 12am on the 29th. There's the promise of merits, badges and lovely XP. Also at 8pm EDT, there will be a special address from Lead Developer Positron; apparently he has some info to share. What could that be I wonder? The broadcast will also appear shortly after on the game's <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com/">official website</a>.<br /><br />Also keen to bring heroes and villains out of retirement, anyone who logs on between 28th April and 3rd May with an expired trial or retail account will be able to access the live servers and join in on the fun. As a final incentive, any character -- that's <em>character</em> not account -- who logs in between 11am on 28th April until 31st of May will find themselves awarded with a special fifth anniversary badge.<br /><br />There will also be some cool contests running, including one where you get to design a t-shirt logo and another where you can create an homage video. Details will appear on the official site next week, but for now, more details can be found <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com/news/news_archive/city_of_heroes_5_year_annivers.html">here</a>.<br /><br /></div>

<br /> We're subbing in for our regular machinima blogger, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/bloggers/moo-money">Moo Money</a>, who is AFK for the next little while. Today for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Cinemassively/">Cinemassively</a>, we're bringing you a video we stumbled across recently and really enjoyed. For those who are fans of the Chicago Public Radio show<em> <a href="http://www.thisamericanlife.org/">This American Life</a></em>, this machinima made by SuperZuck took elements from both <em>TAL</em> and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/City-of-Heroes/">City of Heroes</a></em> and presented (the beginning of) a day in the life of an old-school hero turned filmmaker. Tasty shades of meta. <br /><br />While this is only part one of the work, we are definitely interested in seeing more machinima of this nature! Paragon City holds many heroes, each with a different story, and reasons all their own. Excellent work, SuperZuck, and congrats on your first-place win in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/molotov-alva">Molotov Alva'</a>s "<a href="http://www.machinima.com/molotovalva">Your Virtual Life</a>" machinima contest! Even though the developers have thought of nearly everything, as it's an Open Source application, feel free to make additions to the software. If you are good at coding and testing, however, one thing the team is looking for is a <a href="http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?forum=herostats-devel">developer</a> who can assist with solidifying the application under <a href="http://www.herostats.org/release-notes.html#Known_Issue_Vista">Windows Vista</a>. Of course, like all works in progress, there are a few <a href="http://www.herostats.org/release-notes.html#Known_Issues">minor issues</a> that are constantly being tweaked, whether due to internal concerns or game client changes. For example, as of 29 October, HeroStats now tracks the <a href="http://www.herostats.org/power-notes.html">power sets</a> introduced in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/issue-11">Issue 11</a>. And don't forget, HeroStats works with both the <a href="http://www.cityinfoterminal.com/live/index.asp">City Information Terminal</a> -- one of the top-rated badge tracking sites on the net -- and the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/23/city-game-tracker-software-updated/">City Game Tracker</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/25/herostats-enhanced-with-issue-11-flavor/">HeroStats: enhanced with Issue 11 flavor</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 25 Nov 2007 14:30:00 EST. Ever regret not sending in your work? Well, here's your chance, because <a href="ftp://ftp.cityofheroes.com/fanzine/COHfanzine8X10new.pdf">Issue #0</a> of the new <em>City of Heroes</em> <a href="http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&amp;Number=9639993&amp;an=0&amp;page=0#Post9639993">Fanzine</a> was released today.<br /><br />For those of you who may be concerned that this publication is replacing the City Scoop, fear not: the fanzine was never intended to replace the scoop, but to add to the lore and backstory of the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cox">CoX</a></em> universe. Then, too, the fanzine will only be coming out quarterly, so you'll have to rely on the Scoop ... and Massively, of course ... for timely news about the Rogue Isles and Paragon City.<br /><br />So pull out your pens and digital tablets, and <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com/community/fansubmission_guidelines.html">share your stories and visions</a> of the digital world all of our alts inhabit. We're looking forward to seeing what you have to offer. And don't forget, if you have any thoughts about the fanzine, issues you'd like to raise, or concerns you feel need to be addressed, bring them up in the <a href="http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&amp;Number=9640008&amp;page=0&amp;vc=#Post9640008"><em>City of Heroes</em> official forum</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/17/new-city-of-heroes-fanzine-released/">New City of Heroes Fanzine released</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 17 Nov 2007 05:30:00 EST. It's not just the consistently high quality of the writing, the in-depth retrospectives of the individuals <a href="http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthreaded.php?Cat=0&amp;Number=9533523&amp;page=0&amp;vc=1">Behind the Mask</a>, or the <a href="http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthreaded.php?Cat=0&amp;Number=9533553&amp;page=0&amp;vc=1">artwork</a>, but it's all of those elements combined with the passion put into it by the people behind the project. The pages show that real thought is put into layout and leading, that each person cares about the final product, and that everyone wants to make -- and succeeds in making -- the Scoop fun to read.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/03/extra-extra-read-all-about-it/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CoH's City Scoop drops player written news</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/03/extra-extra-read-all-about-it/">CoH's City Scoop drops player written news</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 03 Nov 2007 17:30:00 EST.
