One of the biggest differences between <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> and most other MMOs is the lack of a humanoid avatar. Even when you're docked up in a station, you can't leave your ship and walk around. The detailed avatars we create on starting the game are not so much avatars as passport photos; seen only as little square mug shots in chat channels and the official forums. In their never-ending quest to make <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> the definitive Sci-Fi simulation, this is something the game's developers <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games/"><em>CCP</em></a> have always endeavoured to change. The introduction of <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/gallery.php?game_id=1676&amp;article_id=312505">a full body avatar feature</a>, code-named "Walking in Stations", "Ambulation" and now known as "Incarna", has been undeniably the most anticipated feature since <em>EVE</em> went live. It's been in development since 2006 but has proven a much larger task than CCP originally anticipated. With the expansion tentatively slated for winter this year, new information on it is still harder to find than a sober Icelandic game developer.<br />
<br />
In this week's <em>EVE Evolved</em>, I take a look at Incarna's development so far and why it hasn't been released yet.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/07/eve-evolved-the-development-of-incarna/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: The development of Incarna</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/07/eve-evolved-the-development-of-incarna/">EVE Evolved: The development of Incarna</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 07 Feb 2010 18:00:00 EST. Now <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> have made video of some of the Fanfest panels, presentations, or general madness available on <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/ccpgames">their YouTube page</a> as well. Of course there's <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNhPig8inEY">the main keynote</a> that included <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514"><em>DUST 514</em></a> info and gameplay footage, but the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFEi2aIvsFA">CCP Panel</a> gave players in attendance the opportunity to ask the <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> developers whatever they felt like. <br /><br />The responses from the devs explain quite a bit about the choices <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a> has made with both <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> and <em>DUST 514</em>, and there are some hints of what's to come. More than anything, it's interesting to see this kind of direct interaction between the players and the people who create the game. <em>(Obligatory disclaimer: The CCP Panel video is a bit NSFW with the language in parts, but if you're watching something like this on the job... you probably don't care.)</em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/08/eve-fanfest-2009-videos-are-up/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Fanfest 2009 videos are up</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/08/eve-fanfest-2009-videos-are-up/">EVE Fanfest 2009 videos are up</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 08 Oct 2009 19:00:00 EST. We discussed <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a>'s winter expansion, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dominion"><em>Dominion</em></a>, and the new dimensions to the sci-fi MMO's setting that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> hopes to introduce. We also learned a bit more about the company's plans to expand <em>EVE</em> into other platforms, namely through the COSMOS social network which will tie in with the game from <em>Dominion</em> onward.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/19/agdc09-eves-nathan-richardsson-on-the-dominion-expansion-and-b/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>AGDC09: EVE's Nathan Richardsson on the Dominion expansion and beyond</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/19/agdc09-eves-nathan-richardsson-on-the-dominion-expansion-and-b/">AGDC09: EVE's Nathan Richardsson on the Dominion expansion and beyond</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 19 Sep 2009 18:00:00 EST. This is especially the case with a sandbox MMO like <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> where the developers provide a setting and the players establish their own virtual society of sorts. The topic of emergent gameplay in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> came up in a recent video interview from the <a href="http://www.nordicgame.com/">Nordic Game Conference</a>, where our friend <a href="http://blog.dontfearthemutant.com/">Petter M&aring;rtensson</a> from <a href="http://www.gamereactor.se">Gamereactor</a> spoke with CCP Games Executive Producer Nathan "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/oveur">Oveur</a>" Richardsson. <br /><br />Their conversation touches upon what the players are doing with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wormholes">wormhole exploration</a> (with around 2500 uncharted solar systems) and CCP's excitement when player alliances clash and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/05/further-developments-in-eves-grand-theft-alliance-drama/">create their own stories of conflict</a>. The interview also covers <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/walking-in-stations"><em>Walking in Stations</em></a> (avatars), the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/21/eve-online-social-network-cosmos-coming-with-winter-expansion/">COSMOS social network</a> that will tie in with <em>EVE</em>, and the company's intent to alter 0.0 space with more tools to build empires and more incentives to get people out there into these lawless regions. However, the fact is many players can't make the trip to Iceland, and a number of North American players have hoped for an event that's more accessible to them. It looks like this is going to happen, and what's more accessible than Las Vegas? (Bonus: "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.")<br /><br />The <a href="http://www.evevegas.com/">2009 EVE Developers Meet and Greet</a> in Las Vegas was mentioned very briefly during the recent (and excellent) <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eve-alliance-tournament">Alliance PvP Tournament</a>, but more info is available now. EVE Vegas is a two-day event that will be held on May 8th and 9th at the Imperial Palace (on the Strip). It kicks off on a Friday with the Meet and Greet, followed up by a conference on Saturday.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/17/eve-developers-to-hold-a-meet-and-greet-in-las-vegas/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE developers to hold a meet and greet in Las Vegas</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/17/eve-developers-to-hold-a-meet-and-greet-in-las-vegas/">EVE developers to hold a meet and greet in Las Vegas</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 17 Feb 2009 19:00:00 EST. Nathan emphasizes the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> stance on charging for expansions: they don't. All <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> expansions to date have been free, as will <em>Apocrypha</em>. The March expansion will also mark the first time <em>EVE</em> has been <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/04/rumors-surface-of-extras-included-with-eve-online-retail-release/">available as a boxed release</a> since the game's initial launch, which Nathan reiterates is CCP's attempt to reach a broader audience. On the subject of making <em>EVE</em> accessible to more gamers, he discusses CCP's choices made with the New Player Experience which will be one of the changes <span style="font-style: italic;">Apocrypha</span> brings to the title. <br /><br />He addresses the game's learning curve and says, <em>"Massively multiplayer gaming is constantly reaching new audiences that haven't tried it before, which results in a challenging start when coupled with [the] complexity of EVE. We strive to expose the gameplay in a simpler manner, easing players into the different areas of gameplay rather than 'dumbing down' EVE. We're working on everything from usability to re-implementing existing features more intuitively."</em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/14/eve-executive-producer-nathan-richardsson-on-the-apocrypha-expan/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE executive producer Nathan Richardsson on the Apocrypha expansion</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/14/eve-executive-producer-nathan-richardsson-on-the-apocrypha-expan/">EVE executive producer Nathan Richardsson on the Apocrypha expansion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 14 Feb 2009 20:00:00 EST. Namely, how the game might expand by <a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/api/doc/">leveraging the <em>EVE</em> API</a>. It looks like CCP is taking the next step in making this happen, from the <a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&amp;threadID=960122">announcement an <em>EVE</em> player came across</a> -- one that suggests mobile and iPhone applications for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> may be coming. <br /><br /><a href="http://ru.is/?PageID=723">Reykjavik University</a> and <a href="http://www.mit.edu/">MIT</a> maintain cooperation through the <a href="http://ilp-www.mit.edu/display_page.a4d?key=H1">MIT Industrial Liaison Program</a> (ILP), which is essentially a way to tap the expertise of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for specific projects. <div align="center"><em>Behold, the Orca! </em><br /></div>
<br /><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> developer CCP Chronotis unveiled the much-rumored Orca ship in <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> today, something industry-types have been looking forward to for a very long time. Chronotis said, <em>"The development of the Orca has been unusual to say the least. With the introduction of the Rorqual last year <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/oveur">Oveur</a> immediately pointed out the remaining glaring gap in the industrial ship line and commanded us to fill it."</em> The end result is a 'sub-capital logistical ship with a mining command focus'. <br /><br />Read on below for a brief FAQ drawn from CCP Chronotis' dev blog as well as his commentary on the forums, which clarifies more about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><span style="font-style: italic;">EVE's</span></a> newest ship, the Orca.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/23/eve-onlines-rumored-orca-ship-unveiled/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Online's rumored 'Orca' ship unveiled</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/23/eve-onlines-rumored-orca-ship-unveiled/">EVE Online's rumored 'Orca' ship unveiled</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 23 Oct 2008 16:30:00 EST. They rolled out a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online">new expansion,</a> released a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/20/new-empyrean-age-trailer/">CG video for <span style="font-style: italic;">Empyrean Age,</span></a> organized <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/20/eve-fanfest-2008-to-have-first-public-preview-of-ambulation/">Fanfest 2008</a> and now they've <a href="http://www.eve-online.com/empyreanage/index.html">put up video interviews</a> with four of their key developers. <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a> gives these highlights of the clips: <br /><br />
<ul>
    <li>Tony Gonzales, <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE Online's</span> Lead Writer, explains that tensions built within the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/empyrean-age"><span style="font-style: italic;">Empyrean Age</span></a> novel were developed to entice both veteran and <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span> players and the 'uninitiated' science fiction fan. Gonzales also toys with the idea of writing a sequel to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/13/the-empyrean-age-qanda-with-author-tony-gonzales/">the book.</a></li>
</ul>
<ul>
    <li>Noah Ward, <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE's</span> Lead Designer, discusses the new features in Trinity 1.1: Boost Patch. Learn all about the new improvements, deadlier ships and interface renovations now available. </li>
</ul>
<ul>
    <li>Matthew Woodward, Game Designer for <span style="font-style: italic;">Empyrean Age,</span> tells us,<span style="font-style: italic;">"These new missions give players the strength of narrative."</span> New missions within Factional Warfare alter the focus from isolated PvE, taking these objectives and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/18/eve-onlines-empyrean-age-a-first-step-towards-something-great/">tying them into the sweeping story</a> found in the <span style="font-style: italic;">Empyrean Age</span> novel. </li>
</ul>
<ul>
    <li>Nathan Richardsson, Executive Producer, discusses the origins of <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE Online</span> while providing an overview of <span style="font-style: italic;">Empyrean Age's</span> features. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/16/eve-evolved-faction-warfare-unleashed/">All out war</a> was the most brutal and obvious choice for this new expansion. Was this war inevitable? Yes. Richardsson also offers his view on what makes PvP exciting and worthwhile. </li>

How would you best describe the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eve-online/"><span style="font-style: italic;">EVE Online</span></a> 2007 Fan Fest? I'd say it was filled with players that talked about ships, consumed copious amounts of alcohol alongside the developers, drooled over the Trinity II expansion, drank more alcohol, some pew-pew and a few bruised <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">hairy man boobs</span> egos afterwards, and it all went down in Iceland. I'll sum it up as a frozen mixture of freakishly-<span style="font-style: italic;">EVE </span>debauchery. I'm still bummed, no "mozom" Fan Fest action for me this year; not that I would want my corporation to obtain proof I mingled with some hostiles, and later use said evidence to black mail me as a spy unless I paid a lofty 25 billion space-bux fine. <br /></div>
<br />Thankfully, for those of us not in attendance or those wanting to relive the panel discussions, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp/">CCP</a> came through on their earlier promise to feature full-length videos from this year's <em>EVE Online</em> Fan Fest. Currently, 12 videos are up for viewing, and length times vary, some go for 20 minutes and others that last a little longer than 60 minutes. It doesn't cost a dime to watch them either. <a href="http://www.eve-online.tv/fanfest.aspx">If you are too lazy to click over and to see the <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE-TV</span> guide</a>, I have you covered with the line-up below.
