Guild Wars 2 players were distressed last night to find themselves kicked from the game during loading screens and unable to log in. Shortly after the problems began, ArenaNet's community team started communicating about them via Twitter, saying that the issues were being looked into. Forum logins were also disabled.

After about an hour of downtime, the game was once again accessible to all -- with a slight problem. Many players discovered that they'd lost the fruits of recent endeavors, including map exploration, items, experience, and gold. According to the Guild Wars 2 Twitter, the team is unable to restore progression or items due to the nature of the outage.

Beyond updates as the issue was being resolved, no one from ArenaNet has given comment about the nature of the outage or how such problems will be avoided in the future.

Guild Wars 2 players suffer a server outage originally appeared on Massively on Sat, 22 Sep 2012 18:00:00 EST. In the 10 days since its head start launch, Guild Wars 2 has suffered multiple outages and bugs, seemingly a new one every day. Even if we discount those players who lost their accounts to hacking, we've still seen players affected by in-game mail outages, exploits, overflow bugs, character creation and deletion issues, server transfer problems, guild system implosions, and a new email authentication system (which was meant to reduce the rate of hackings) that rendered even some Massively commenters and staffers unable to play the game over chunks of this holiday weekend.

Perhaps the issue affecting the most people over the course of the last week has been the near-permanent offline status of the Black Lion Trading Company, the game's auction hall. Quaggans are cute and all, but I'm starting to get impatient myself; I've yet to see the trading post live for even a minute.

So today we're wondering when exactly your patience runs out when it comes to large-scale MMO launches and their immediate aftermath. How long do you give a just-launched game to get its act together before you give up and go back to more established, tried-and-true MMOs? And if you leave in a huff, do you forgive and forget and return when the game has settled down?
The PlayStation Network outage plot thickens. In today's hearing by the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Sony executive vice president Kaz Hirai refused to testify. One who did testify, however, was US Public Policy Council of the Association for Computing Machinery head Gene Spafford, and did he ever have some words for Sony.

During his testimony, Spafford claimed that Sony was well aware of the security holes in the PlayStation Network, asserting that PSN was using old software that was "unpatched and had no firewall installed." He also noted that these security issues were brought to the table in a Sony-moderated forum, but no action was taken as a result.

If these claims are true, Sony is in for an even bigger world of hurt, and this situation could escalate into something not even a complimentary Batman mask can rectify.
It hasn't been an easy ride for Sony Online Entertainment customers this week, as it looks like the PSN hack has affected them as well. The company is already working on a plan to make up the outage to players, especially the DC Universe Online customers who have been doubly hit. And as we all know, the road to mending fences starts with a nice hat, which has just recently been revealed on the former game's Facebook page.

According to the official statement, all DC Universe Online players impacted by the outage will receive a free month of game time plus one day per day that the service was unavailable. Players will also be receiving a new Batman-inspired mask as shown above. Precise details will be made available to players in the coming days as network service begins restoration, and while the hat won't cure all woes, it will at least help ease the sting.
DC Universe Online players getting a new mask as a consolation prize originally appeared on Massively on Wed, 04 May 2011 19:30:00 EST. If you live in New England, you've probably spent the past month staring at a wall of unblinking white hatred, playing video games in a desperate effort to feel less trapped. Unfortunately, this past week has been rather touch-and-go for the servers on City of Heroes, making it much harder to escape into the game whether or not you're walled in by frozen water. So the development team is offering an olive branch to players: the ski chalet just outside of Pocket D is being re-opened for the weekend.

Running until noon PST on February 8th, the ski chalet will be open to all characters to enjoy, something usually reserved for the winter holiday event. It'll also segue nicely into the start of the Spring Fling event, giving players their annual shot at earning valentine's-themed costume parts and badges. If you're one of the City of Heroes players who has been locked out by the server outages, you'll no doubt be happy for the opportunity to get in some winter fun -- unless, of course, you're still stuck in the midst of the winter's omnipresent snowdrifts.
City of Heroes a ski destination for the weekend originally appeared on Massively on Fri, 04 Feb 2011 21:00:00 EST. When we first sat down to write this post, the European server Centaurus was down as well, but has since come back online. We're hoping that this is just a freak incidence of somebody tripping over a power cord or something, and not a debilitating outage. The Bane can't be trusted on a server by themselves all weekend.

No word from Destination Games yet, but we'd expect an update soon. In the meantime, I'll be... I don't know, reading a book or something?

[Update: As of 10:37 EST, the servers all appear to be online and in working order. Back to battle with you, soldiers!]
Tabula Rasa servers down, rabble rabble rabble!
