I pretty much went all Norn for the stress test last week. Alone (like a true Norn), I ventured to the highest, loneliest peaks of Snowden Drifts, swam in the darkest ice caves, and faced the largest metric crap-ton of <a href="http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Sons_of_Svanir">Sons of Svanir</a> imaginable.<br />
<br />
As my Necromancer slid what felt like the nine hundredth Son off of her dagger blades, I took the time to look around soak up the view; there's nothing quite like rallying three times in a fight against a whole passel of renegade Norn to make a girl really appreciate the scenery.<br />
<br />
Say what you will (and this being the Internet, many folks do) about whether or not having to zone between maps is, like, the <em>ultimate </em>sign that the game isn't truly "massively multiplayer," but each and every map we've seen so far in <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com/en/"><em>Guild Wars 2 </em></a>is packed to the brim with excitement.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/22/flameseeker-chronicles-touring-the-snowden-drifts/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Flameseeker Chronicles: Touring the Snowden Drifts</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/22/flameseeker-chronicles-touring-the-snowden-drifts/">Flameseeker Chronicles: Touring the Snowden Drifts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 22 May 2012 18:00:00 EST. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, or in this case, 460,000 likes on Facebook. Reacting to the growing popularity of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> in its social media, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> has released a brand-new piece of gorgeous concept art for you to gawk at.<br />
<br />
The piece shows Norn Eir Stegalkin finding something hidden deep underwater. Eir is one of the five key heroes of Destiny's Edge, the retired adventuring group that plays a huge part in the game. As <em>Guild Wars 2</em> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/24/guild-wars-2-dives-head-first-into-underwater-combat/">will have a significant underwater portion</a>, this art is a good reminder that not all of the game's exploration and landmarks will take place out in the open air.<br />
<br />
The concept art is by ArenaNet's <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=22575901&amp;authType=NAME_SEARCH&amp;authToken=IwA2&amp;locale=en_US&amp;srchid=844975fa-b80d-425e-87f3-337b2239ab57-0&amp;srchindex=3&amp;srchtotal=17&amp;goback=.fps_PBCK_*1_Jamie_Ro_*1_*1_*1_*1_*2_*1_Y_*1_*1_*1_false_1_R_*1_*51_*1_*51_true_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2&amp;pvs=ps&amp;trk=pp_profile_name_link">Jamie Ro</a> and can be viewed in high resolution on <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/arenanet/7092056785/">Flickr</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/19/guild-wars-2-releases-underwater-concept-art/">Guild Wars 2 releases underwater concept art</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 19 Apr 2012 15:30:00 EST. <em>The second </em><a href="http://www.guildwars2.com">Guild Wars 2</a><em> press beta weekend has come and gone, and Massively was there every step of the way. Stay tuned throughout the day today for even more <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/guild-wars-2-beta">guides, impressions, videos, and Q&amp;As</a> to get you ready for the highly anticipated sequel to </em><a href="http://www.guildwars.com">Guild Wars</a><em>.</em><br />
<br />
In just the few minutes that it takes to traverse the 10 screens of <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com/en/"><em>Guild Wars 2's</em></a> character creation process, I'm left with one overriding thought: This game looks ridiculously good. Ludicrously so, even. And I didn't even enter the game world yet!<br />
<br />
I always love a good, in-depth character creation system, as there's a joy in spending a good amount of time making exactly the sort of character you want to play. Unfortunately, most MMOs have stripped this process down to the bare basics, which is why I'm pleased to announce that it's actually a mini-journey in and of itself in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>.<br />
<br />
The point of this process isn't just to make a character but help you grow attached to this person and get to know him or her through it. What are this character's motivations? What branch of his or her profession is the most appealing? How did you become a hero? What obstacles do you have to overcome?<br />
<br />
Instead of playing the game itself, I took some time over this beta testing weekend to dissect every step of the character creation system and bring my findings back to those of you who want to start building your character in your mind.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/26/breaking-down-guild-wars-2s-character-creator/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Breaking down Guild Wars 2's character creator</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/26/breaking-down-guild-wars-2s-character-creator/">Breaking down Guild Wars 2's character creator</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 26 Mar 2012 12:00:00 EST. If you're a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> fan who couldn't make the trip to London for this weekend's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eurogamer-expo">Eurogamer Expo</a>, <a href="http://www.cynicalbrit.com/">Cynical Brit's Total Biscuit</a> has the next best thing.<br />
<br />
The site sent a gaggle of its community members to the event, and their impressions are collected in an ever-expanding <a href="http://www.guildwars2guru.com/forum/eurogamer-expo-attendees-impressions-t18959.html">threadnaught</a> sure to put a smile on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> fan faces. The news post also features a series of gameplay videos shot live at the event, and all told the three clips clock in at just under an hour of footage. The videos feature both Norn Thief PvP and high-level Sylvari Necromancer shenanigans.<br />
<br />
Check them out after the break and head to Cynical Brit for more info.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/25/guild-wars-2-necromancer-thief-gameplay-videos-captured-at-euro/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Guild Wars 2 Necromancer, Thief gameplay videos captured at Eurogamer Expo</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/25/guild-wars-2-necromancer-thief-gameplay-videos-captured-at-euro/">Guild Wars 2 Necromancer, Thief gameplay videos captured at Eurogamer Expo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 25 Sep 2011 22:00:00 EST. We're not sure whether he was inspired by the recent Oscars or other recent <a href="http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/710799/Charlie-Sheen-Worlds-Greatest-Video-Game-Designer--.html">winning</a> theatrics, but this week <a href="http://www.g4tv.com/videos/51570/The-MMO-Report-Thursday-March-3rd/?quality=hd">we're treated to a breathtaking performance</a> from the MMO Report's very own <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Casey-Schreiner/">Casey Schreiner</a>. Admittedly, he likely won't be picking up any golden statuettes from the Academy -- this is internet video, after all. However, we feel relatively certain that he will likely find his bag quite swollen over owing to this week's subtle combination of stellar performance and particularly well-groomed facial hair. Well, that and because this week's episode is <em>really</em> short.<br />
<br />
Starting off running, Casey touches on the February game update in <a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> while simultaneously saving us from having to look at cherubs from the game's holiday event. After that, it's a quick jump to <a href="http://www.runesofmagic.com"><em>Runes of Magic</em></a>, which is determined to make it even easier to spend tons of time wandering aimlessly in the game while telling your Facebook friends all about it. Next, it's a nod to our <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-2011/">GDC 2011</a> coverage with our <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ArenaNet/">ArenaNet</a> localization panel writeup and an aside about the large amount of <a href="http://www.guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> hardcore <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Norn/">Norn</a> we got to enjoy last week. Finally, the bag returns to equally rapidly disappear once again.<br />
<br />

Last week, <a href="http://www.arena.net">ArenaNet</a> treated eager fans to an in-depth look at the Norn race of <em><a href="http://www.guildwars2.com">Guild Wars 2</a></em>. The new details -- the release of which was similar to Human week's release -- gave us a deeper look at who the Norn are, how they see the world around them, and what's important to them.<br />
<br />
I've enjoyed it as much as anyone, and I spent the week indulging in repeated viewings of the video, poring over the new art, and reading the write-ups for every scrap of information.<br />
<br />
Before we continue, however, I want to give a quick update on what <a href="http://guildwars.incgamers.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=221">[MVOP]</a> has been up to. We began <em><a href="http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Guild_Wars_Nightfall">Nightfall</a></em> a few weeks ago and continued our new practice of making progress in our regular campaign then switching to other content for the second half of the evening. Last Thursday night's choice was Sorrow's Furnace, one of the most visually impressive areas of the game. We ran through the quest <a href="http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Unspeakable,_Unknowable">Unspeakable, Unknowable</a>, both for the chance to enjoy the view of the zone and to do a quest involving the Great Destroyer. If you missed our Livestream of the evening, make sure you find time to <a href="http://www.livestream.com/massivelytv/video?clipId=flv_7d4ecf7b-9c19-4191-bef5-7c6a9c12c11b&amp;utm_source=lslibrary&amp;utm_medium=ui-thumb">check it out on our on-demand channel</a>.<br />
<br />
For now, follow along after the jump for my analysis of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/norn-week">Norn week</a>!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/28/flameseeker-chronicles-norn-week/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Flameseeker Chronicles: Norn week</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/28/flameseeker-chronicles-norn-week/">Flameseeker Chronicles: Norn week</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 28 Feb 2011 12:00:00 EST. The world of Tyria has long been possessed of deep and engaging lore, and the official <a href="http://arena.net">ArenaNet</a> blog has just updated with a bit more of the backstory that fans will be soaking up with the eventual release of <a href="http://guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arena-net">ANet's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ree-soesbee">Ree Soesbee</a> has penned a Norn-centric piece that offers a revealing look at the warrior race's affinity for the Spirits of the Wild.<br />
<br />
Soesbee's update focuses on four of the more important Spirits -- bear, snow leopard, raven, and wolf -- and features three story vignettes to go along with a bit of intro exposition in each case. Head to the official ANet blog for the <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/a-spirit-of-legend">latest update</a> as Norn week comes to a close.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/25/guild-wars-2-blog-updates-with-norn-lore-entry/">Guild Wars 2 blog updates with Norn lore entry</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 25 Feb 2011 16:30:00 EST. In what might well be the highlight of Norn week, <a href="http://www.arena.net">ArenaNet</a> has released a wealth of information to <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> fans this morning. A new video, screenshots and art, and an interview with the developers combine to tell players all about what they can expect if they choose to play a Norn character.<br />
<br />
Where and how will you live? What are your surroundings like? <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/jeff-grubb">Jeff Grubb</a>, <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/ree-soesbee">Ree Soesbee</a>, <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum">Eric Flannum</a>, and <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/bobby-stein">Bobby Stein</a> gathered to deliver some insight on the Norn and gave us some exciting new details in the bargain. For example, the Norn trait of being in sympathy with nature isn't limited to the animal forms we're familiar with so far. For example, Eric Flannum explained that Norn players can use that affinity to call upon the wurm spirit and summon a temporary wurm pet to assist in battle. While we're not sure you'd <a href="http://wiki.guildwars.com/images/7/7d/Frost_Wurm.jpg">want one sticking around</a> and following you home, they make for handy companions to call on in a pinch.<br />
<br />
The new video, set to <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/jeremy-soule">Jeremy Soule's</a> instantly recognizable background score, offers sweeping views of some of the Norn home areas. The video, which is a combination of familiar and new footage, deserves at least two viewings to allow you to take it all in -- thanks both to the sheer size of it all and the intricate detail. From the shields mounted high above to the weapons on the fences below, there's more to see than can be parsed in one viewing.<br />
<br />
The screenshots are a combination of new and old too, but even the familiar ones have new bits of information here and there. The Norn female we saw way back when is now clearly identified as a Ranger in the image title, for example.<br />
<br />

Norn Week continues for <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>, and while that may sound a bit like Shark Week, it's not quite the same deal. The Norn are a bit more personable, for one. They're also the center of <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/norn-week-designing-and-redesigning-events">a new piece on designing and redesigning events on the official blog</a>, penned by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Jeffrey-Vaughn/">Jeffrey Vaughn</a>. Focusing on the event design of the Wayfarer Hills (the starting area for Norn characters), the article covers both the general design procedure as well as the specifics for new Norn.<br />
<br />
As Vaughn puts it, one of the centerpieces of the area's design is the four shrines to the Norn totem animals -- Bear, Raven, Wolf, and Snow Leopard. Originally all four were slated to be attacked by the Dragon-worshipping Sons of Svanir, but those events felt mechanically identical, resulting in changes being made to each shrine's event. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Guild-Wars-2/">Guild Wars 2</a></em> players can enjoy a slice of the Norn's Nordic flavor and lore with <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/norn-week-designing-and-redesigning-events">the latest installment of the week</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/23/a-look-at-the-norn-events-of-guild-wars-2/">A look at the Norn events of Guild Wars 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 23 Feb 2011 18:30:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/legend-and-legacy-of-the-norn">second installment of Norn week</a> has arrived to the <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet-blog">ArenaNet blog</a>, and it seems to be following the pattern of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/human-week">last week's human focus</a> in this <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> series. <br />
<br />
As with last week, day two brings us a series of voice clips to augment the short paragraphs about the Norn outlook on their surroundings. Both the text and audio both included some interesting new insights into lore that we're already familiar with. Each <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> race seems to have its own "dark" or "rebellious" faction -- the <a href="http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Sons_of_Svanir">Sons of Svanir</a> in this case. <br />
<br />
There are a few mentions of this faction highlighting how the other Norn reluctantly accept its members in day to day life. "It is a good day to hunt."<br />
<br />
So say the Norn in <a href="http://www.guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> -- they're cheerful and eager to meet challenges, and today's <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/norn-week-begins">Norn week kickoff</a> tells us that it's a typical attitude that will carry on in <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>. They've been through various challenges including being driven from their homeland, but the Norn truly "<em>project a positive attitude</em>," according to lore and continuity designer <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/jeff-grubb">Jeff Grubb</a>.<br />
<br />
This new blog entry offers a brief introduction to the Wayfarer Foothills area of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> and gives a deeper look into the culture of the Norn. Players familiar with <a href="http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Eye_of_the_North"><em>Eye of the North</em></a> will recognize traits of the current race of Norn, while those unfamiliar with the game as it is now will enjoy a thorough introduction to how the race thinks and feels. <br />

You know you've got a surefire hit MMORPG on your hands when you're confident enough to put out a press release about a press release. <a href="http://ncsoft.com">NCsoft</a> and <a href="http://arena.net">ArenaNet</a> have done just that by announcing that the Norn-flavored followup to the wildly successful <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/07/a-week-of-humanity-for-guild-wars-2/">Human Week</a> is on its way. <br />
<br />
It doesn't start until Monday, though, so the best we can tell you at this point is that Norn Week is the second in an ongoing series of race reveals for <a href="http://guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>, and the focus will be moving away from humans and toward the shape-shifting half-giants called Norn in short order. Norn Week will bring new dev insights regarding the game's lore, new art assets, and a new video.<br />
<br />
That's a lot of new, but unfortunately you'll have to wait a few more days. In the meantime, head to the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/">blog</a> for the latest official news and views from the world of Tyria.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/18/guild-wars-2s-norn-week-starts-monday/">Guild Wars 2's Norn week starts Monday</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 18 Feb 2011 17:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> still seems achingly far away if you're one of the many players hotly anticipating the game, but we can take comfort in the fact that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ArenaNet/">ArenaNet</a> has continued to share more of the lore of the world via regular blog entries. The Kodan, previously known in only the barest terms, have been <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/the-wisdom-and-power-of-the-kodan">revealed in full with the latest writeup</a>. A mighty and proud race from the northern lands, these powerful ursine warriors have begun moving south, at once seeking refuge and judging the other races of Tyria.<br />
<br />
"Judging" is to put it mildly, really -- the kodan view themselves as the arbiters of spiritual purity within the world, even as they flee from the elder ice dragon Jormag. Some norn and kodan alike believe that the norn are descended from the bear-men, which the kodan view as a great failing of the norn, hence why the other race has been stripped of its natural form. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> has a very early, very wonderful holiday gift for <a href="http://www.guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> fans this morning: a brand new <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> trailer. (Take a moment to cheer, then we'll move on.) The trailer is amazingly beautiful, something we've come to expect from <a href="http://www.arena.net">ArenaNet</a> and particularly <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>. But if you don't let yourself get distracted by the eye candy -- something that is admittedly hard to do -- there is a lot of new information here, including more details on people and places we've already heard of, and some fascinating possibilities to explore.<br />
<br />
Take a look at the video here, then follow along with us as we explore this new information from ArenaNet. If you're unfamiliar with <em>Guild Wars 2</em>, this will help you get acquainted, but we also have some deep lore speculation for current <em>Guild Wars</em> fans. (The video can also be found at the <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com/en/">official <em>Guild Wars 2</em> site</a>.)<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/04/analyzing-the-newest-guild-wars-2-trailer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Analyzing the newest Guild Wars 2 trailer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/04/analyzing-the-newest-guild-wars-2-trailer/">Analyzing the newest Guild Wars 2 trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 04 Dec 2009 11:00:00 EST.
