If you or your children are fond of Nickelodeon's Monkey Quest, you may have run into the unavoidable problem that the game requires you to be home. Like many other games, however, Monkey Quest is hopping on the mobile bandwagon with Monkey Quest: Thunderbow. Available now for the iPhone and iPad, the game stars a specific monkey from the world of Ook, the eponymous Thunderbow, as he seeks to dethrone the evil cat king Zotan.

Gameplay is managed in a similar style as the popular Angry Birds games, with the caveat being that Angry Birds doesn't allow you to earn special items and equipment for use in the main Monkey Quest game. Regular updates are planned for the game to help keep players engaged and interested as Thunderbow continues his quest. So if you've got one of the portable devices and your child can't get enough monkey business, it's worth a look.
Nickelodeon's recent kid-oriented MMO Monkey Quest -- which Massively has covered before -- announced today that in its first live month, two million registered users have joined the fray. To celebrate this milestone, Nickelodeon is adding a brand-new storyline known as The Return of the Guardian Knights. This storyline "follows the mystery of the Guardian Knights, a lost patrol of ancient warriors who emerge from the Forgotten Temple after centuries of imprisonment."

Along with a new narrative, the storyline expansion also introduces a brand-new area with "epic quests, ferocious monsters, weapons, abilities, and unique crafting recipes" in addition to adding daily quests. Community events, during which players can receive various gifts, are also on the menu. Players who choose to shell out a bit of cash will also be able to access more challenging areas and be able to "train to become a Guardian Knight." If this sounds like something you'd like to get in on, head on over to the Monkey Quest official site to sign up.

Monkey Quest hits two million registered users in first month originally appeared on Massively on Mon, 16 May 2011 21:30:00 EST. With family-themed MMOs attracting an ever-growing number of players, it's little surprise that Nickelodeon has tossed its hat into the ring with the launch of Monkey Quest. It's a browser-based, light-hearted MMO that combines the action style of console games with the virtual world and questing that's traditional to MMOs. It's free-to-play, but it also offers several different subscription plans to suit practically every playstyle.

Massively was happy to talk with Nickelodeon Senior Vice President Kyra Reppen about Monkey Quest, the challenges of creating a kid-themed MMO, and trends for the genre overall. If you've ever felt like picking through your friends' hair for bugs to eat, or if you've ever found yourself throwing questionable things at strangers, then you might be excited to hear that Nickelodeon is developing an MMO just for you! That's right, in the up-and-coming Monkey Quest, you and your friends can team up to find adventure in a world that is ruled by monkeys and filled with danger!

Nickelodeon is no stranger to fun and games, so it will be interesting to see its take on an MMO. Although the game seems made for kids -- as you'd expect -- its cooperative gameplay looks like it will be fun for monkeys at all stages of evolution. The game boasts a free-to-play hybrid payment model for players who might like an "enhanced" player experience. Does that mean cash shop? Does that mean monkey hats and monkey pants? We hope so!

If it sounds interesting, click past the jump and check out the trailer. Just watch out for any... flinging.
Continue reading Nickelodeon evolves a new monkey MMO

Nickelodeon evolves a new monkey MMO originally appeared on Massively on Fri, 01 Apr 2011 20:00:00 EST. Ah, another week of playing in the Spiral of Wizard101. It's been a lot of fun so far, and I've learned more than I thought I would. Of course, the game continues to run smoothly without almost any issues, and the combat is really starting to ramp up. I've barely dipped my toes into crafting and gathering, only going so far as to take on the first quest in a line that seems to explain it. I even dabbled in pet-raising and games, as well, probably the main area in which I can see the need for more improvement.

Other than that, I mostly enjoyed jumping into open groups with other players. Solo play is a blast, for sure, but having three other wizards at your side as you battle a gaggle of baddies is a sight to be seen. I'll have to get much better, though, in spite of finding it easy to mow down my enemies. I've started to notice chinks in the armor of my deck and have begun to wonder what it is I am doing wrong. I have an idea, but more testing is needed.

Click past the cut to read the details of my adventure, and maybe you can give me some advice, too!

Continue reading Choose My Adventure: There's no crying in the Spiral edition

Choose My Adventure: There's no crying in the Spiral edition originally appeared on Massively on Wed, 02 Feb 2011 18:00:00 EST. Hero:108 is a popular kids show on Cartoon Network, and the MMO that has spun off of the series will be making its presence known on Nickelodeon pretty soon.

The new Hero:108 Online commercial will take viewers on a quick, raucous trip through the free-to-play game, through the eyes of a fairly enthusiastic young player.

In "news we didn't see coming" we have a new IP that's going to be joining the MMO landscape -- SpongeBob SquarePants. That's right, soon players everywhere will have a chance to wander around Bikini Bottom, perhaps even grabbing their own Krabby Patty to nosh on, as MTV and GigaMedia Limited are partnering up to produce the first MMO based on one of Nickelodeon's titles.

Now, as to the bad news: The game is being developed primarily for the Asian markets first. It will launch in 2011 to players in China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Southeast Asia and India. That's right -- no Western client, despite SpongeBob being popular over here. However, with as fast as things are seemingly localized for our market from the Asian side of the MMO house, one could expect a fairly quick port if one of the Western outlets picks it up and gets the ball rolling.

As to details on how the game itself will play, there's no real news on that beyond the statement that it will be a free-to-play game. The release states that they will be utilizing "a wide range of video and simple Flash-based games allowing users of all skill-levels and ages to interact and share their SpongeBob SquarePants experiences online." Whether it will wind up more a Facebook-type MMO, a web-embedded suite of games with a thin virtual world veneer, or a true Western-styled client, we'll have to wait and see. Still, it might be worth playing just to smack Squidward, or cruise around on David Hasselhoff.

SpongeBob SquarePants to head for MMO waters originally appeared on Massively on Wed, 09 Jun 2010 18:00:00 EST. The 2008 Virtual Worlds conference has come and gone, and the aftermath is gracing news sites all over the web. In a particularly in-depth article at Virtual World News, we get a first hand account of what went on. It's a no-brainer that the majority of business attendees focused on how to make money in virtual worlds. The Wall Street Journal calls this "virtual business 2.0", which is basically a few buzz words thrown together in an attempt to look hip and cool. We're certainly not saying that business has no place in a VW, but it can become a scary thought, ultimately.

Another prominent avenue explored at this event is that of children's virtual worlds, which are becoming increasingly popular. Neopets, Nickelodeon, Barbie and Dinokids were all on-hand to make sure their piece of the pie was well-represented.
Virtual Worlds 2008 overview originally appeared on Massively on Thu, 10 Apr 2008 10:00:00 EST. Obviously not all of those are MMOs (if you've ever spent any time around a kid in a browser, you'll have seen all the crazy flash games there are out there for them), but Nickelodeon's stable does include Neopets and Nicktropolis, both of which are super-casual virtual worlds.

Basically, online gaming for the youngster set is huge, and only growing bigger. And while what they're playing now isn't too exciting (most of it is all clones of each other, with not much more social interaction than chatting between minigames), today's AddictingGames.com players are the MMO players of tomorrow.

Think 10 million players is a big number for WoW to hit? That's nothing compared to the flood of young online gamers coming up right now. To them, there's no difference between online or offline games -- games are online and social, and Nickelodeon's big order only means there are going to be more and more of them.
Nickelodeon's 1600 games and what it means for MMOs originally appeared on Massively on Wed, 19 Mar 2008 15:30:00 EST. Onling gaming sites Club Penguin and Webkinz have apparently been doing so well that Disney has decided to invest in a deluge of cute, adorable virtual worlds. They plan on creating up to ten (yeah that's right, we said ten) virtual worlds that will tie into different properties. We already know about the as-of-yet unnamed Cars game Disney is making, that's just the first of many. The brand new virtual world is Pixie's Hollow and this one is based on Tinker Bell. The game is being developed with creative input by the same people responsible for Disney's theme park rides. The game is scheduled for debut this summer, just in time to help build buzz for the upcoming Tinker Bell feature film in the fall. Considering that Disney is a $35.5 billion dollar company, these virtual worlds are definitely a small investment overall at $5 to $10 million each; at least in comparison to a big-budget MMO.

All in all, it would seem that Disney is rather serious about this method of entertainment and rightfully so. With plans to make ten games, an easy prediction is that we'll see plenty of new releases over the coming years. What isn't an easy prediction is guessing just how well this endeavor of theirs will work. Disney is only the latest company to join the likes of Mattel, Nickelodeon and Lego -- just to name a few -- looking for some of that pie. It should be interesting to see how this market expands over the next couple of years, now that it's starting to get crowded.

[Via Virtual Worlds News]
Disney investing a cool $100M in virtual worlds originally appeared on Massively on Thu, 03 Jan 2008 10:00:00 EST.
