<em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Iris-Online/">Iris Online</a></em> players are in for a treat today because it's patch day. And not just the small sort of patch with a bunch of bugfixes, either -- this is the big kind, the kind that opens up new areas and expands the level cap. In fact, it's <em>exactly</em> that kind, as today's update opens four new zones and the Lost Temple of Atlantis for player exploration. The temple is meant as the most challenging dungeon in the game and contains a variety of treasures for players braving its depths.<br />
<br />
Beyond the temple, the new zones give players new chances to strike back and liberate the land from the Sahar, complete with new quests to enjoy. Those new quests will also help as players head for the new level cap of 75, but if that alone isn't enough, the development team is doubling all EXP and SXP rates until April 29th. Players can also earn special treasure boxes for a limited time, a little extra boost for enjoying the game's new content.<br />

I've tried to be patient. I really have. I even avoided any wayward glances at <em><a href="http://na.aiononline.com/">Aion's</a></em> Korean <a href="http://gameguide.na.aiononline.com/aion/Korean+PTS%3A+Initial+3.0+Patch+Notes">patch notes</a> (translated, of course) for 3.0. That way, I could contain my excitement a little better. I mean, we already know I am dying for housing, and I also know mounts are involved. But there is always so much more, and I was trying to make the wait more bearable. I stood firm in my resolve.<br />
<br />
Then I broke down. I peeked. And oh how the many-tendriled beast of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/07/wings-over-atreia-anticipaaaaaaaaaaaation/">anticipation</a> took hold of me once again! Of course there is always the requisite "fixed this bug" and "changed that appearance" filler, but when mining deeper, you also find some definite valuable nuggets. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion">Aion's</a></em> next patch has some "how cool," some "oh wow, that's really unexpected," and some "about time!" thrown in as well. From new zones to new <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/06/wings-over-atreia-the-top-19-ways-to-get-your-dungeon-crawl-on/">instances</a> to new features, there is plenty coming our way. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lineage-2/"><em>Lineage II's</em></a> latest expansion has been in the works for a looooong while, or at least it seems that way. Every time we see a new post about the game, we get our hopes up and then wonder when we'll actually get to play <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/goddess-of-destruction">Goddess of Destruction</a></em> instead of read about it.<br />
<br />
Alas, <a href="http://www.lineage2.com/archive/2011/09/sace_says_a_god_4.html">today's news</a> isn't a release date, but at least the official <em>Lineage II</em> website has updated with some interesting tidbits about the new content. The <em>GoD</em> expansion is finally bringing an auction house to the seven-year-old fantasy title, and consequently players will no longer need to clutter up various town squares with their AFK store bots. There's also a bit of insight into the new awakening process that level 85 players will experience prior to their journey toward the new level cap. In a game like <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Wurm-Online/">Wurm Online</a></em>, fresh lands are important. After all, the game places so much emphasis on setting up your own homestead in the untamed wilderness that you find yourself a bit out in the cold if the land is already developed. This was part of what led to the opening of the game's first new server, Deliverance, but the response of the playerbase has been so overwhelming that the development team is doing the time warp again.<br />
<br />
According to the development team, a new land named Exodus is being added just south of Deliverance. It's intended to give players a new chance to get involved with building in fertile lands untouched by human expansion, and it's set to go live on Thursday at 1 p.m. EDT. For those of you recalling the issues with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/30/wurm-online-to-open-new-pve-server-deliverance-commence-lan/">the earlier server opening</a>, the team hopes that the new region will open without problem. So get ready to go... well, south, young man, because the lands there are ripe for the taking.<br />

It's patch day for <a href="http://allods.gpotato.com/"><em>Allods Online</em></a>, and <a href="http://gpotato.com/">gPotato's</a> free-to-play fantasy epic is sporting quite a few revisions. The <a href="http://allods.gpotato.com/news/2011/07/01/patch-2-0-04-49/"><em>Rise of the Gods</em></a> release (version 2.0.04.49 if you're counting at home) includes new high-level zones, increased challenge via the third Astral layer (as well as some ship navigation tweaks), more vanity items, and a new reincarnation system.<br />

This last bit caught our interest as it allows high-level <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/allods-online"><em>Allods</em></a> players to create a second character that shares all of the original character's item shop goodies. Both toons also have access to the same Astral ships, gold, and a few other trinkets according to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gpotato">gPotato's</a> latest press release, and the mechanic offers a new spin on the traditional alt-creation pastime. In nine agonizing days, the lands will despair as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/chapter-4/">Chapter 4</a> hits <a href="http://us.runesofmagic.com/us/index.html"><em>Runes of Magic</em></a> with all the force of a horde of zombies unleashed upon the TED conference. There'll be zombies, there'll be Dwarves, and oh yeah, there'll be world battlefields. I'm not sure what that last one will entail, but it sounds cool, doesn't it?<br />
<br />
There's going to be some changes a comin' in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/runes-of-magic/"><em>RoM</em></a> when the level cap is raised and new loot is dispersed among high-level players. MMOs can develop ecosystems that only the most in-tune players will be intimately familiar with. While you might be new to the game and happy enough to just quest or dabble in the many features <em>RoM</em> has to offer, there's a posh, red, velvety lounge filled with high-rollers keeping tabs on how new items and stats will trickle down to affect the game.<br />
<br />
A new level cap means new armor, which means current top gear will be obsolete for said high rollers. Welfare epics will be unleashed on the market, prices will change, and the race for better gear will commence. This week on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lost-pages-of-taborea/">Lost Pages of Taborea</a>, I want to look at how new content and items will affect the game. How will all the new items affect the economy? How will new dungeons affect pick-up-groups? <a href="http://tera-online.com"><em>TERA's</em></a> Korean client is getting a big update, and the game's European publisher has issued a press release that details quite a few changes coming to the action fantasy MMORPG. <a href="http://www.frogster.de/en/index.html">Frogster's</a> press release doesn't mention a date, nor does it mention why the EU publisher is reporting on the Korean client of a title that has yet to launch in Europe (nor why <a href="http://enmasse.com">En Masse</a>, the North American publisher, is silent).<br />
<br />
In terms of the update itself, it boasts a level cap increase from 50 to 58, 10 new zones, a large new city, and four new dungeons. Guildmasters may declare war on opposing guilds and ignite no-holds barred conflicts that last for seven days, and there's also an interesting new skill customization feature that allows players to choose which abilities to connect via combos. Speculation and excitement are the order of the day on both the <a href="http://forums-eu.ageofconan.com/showthread.php?t=166446">European</a> and <a href="http://forums-us.ageofconan.com/showthread.php?t=233192">American</a> forums for <a href="http://ageofconan.com"><em>Age of Conan</em></a>. What's all the hubbub about? Two new lands are purportedly in the works, and this jibes with a cryptic comment by <a href="http://funcom.com">Funcom</a> game director Craig "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/craig-morrison">Silirrion</a>" Morrison in last month's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/29/monthly-update-lays-out-age-of-conan-development-roadmap/">development update</a>.<br />

"<em>This is where we get to the stuff we can't quite talk about just yet... yes, a little teasing I know, but trust us, it is far more frustrating not being able to talk about what is coming just yet. These will be important updates, with two new and important elements incoming</em>," Morrison wrote.<br />

Fans are speculating that the two new and important elements are in fact two Hyborian provinces filled with a multitude of new zones, specifically Turan and Ardashir. Massively has confirmed that bringing up the in-game player search tab and filtering by region shows two new headings labeled Turan and Ardashir alongside the pre-existing countries of Aquilonia, Cimmeria, Stygia, and Khitai. There is also a bit of conjecture on the official boards regarding <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom">Funcom's</a> annual report, which <a href="http://forums-eu.ageofconan.com/showthread.php?t=166321">says in part</a> that 2011 will bring "<em>significant content and story tie-ins with the [new Conan] <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/08/the-anvil-of-crom-can-funcom-capitalize-on-the-conan-film-reboo/">movie</a></em>." We'll keep you updated as this story develops and as we get official word from the devs.<br />

<a href="http://www.perpetuum-online.com/"><em>Perpetuum</em></a> has been stomping its way along after its fairly recent launch, doing its level best to prove that everything really is better with giant robots. While the development team has been a bit quiet the past few weeks, the <a href="http://blog.perpetuum-online.com/posts/2011-03-03-the-sweet-sound-of-development/">newest devblog entry</a> explains some of the reasons behind the silence. A lot of the team's focus has been on adding new zones to the game for players to explore, with six new zones in development -- three of them remaining safe and three allowing for the unrepentant robot warfare that drives the core game.<br />
<br />
The game's artifact scanning minigame is also nearing completion, and while the blog entry states outright that the mechanics will be fairly similar, it sounds like a good way to pass some time while there's nothing for your robot to shoot at. It's almost time for a new stanza in the ongoing saga that is <a href="http://runesofmagic.com"><em>Runes of Magic</em></a>, and <a href="http://www.frogster.de/en/index.html">Frogster</a> and <a href="http://www.runewaker.com/en/index.php">Runewaker Entertainment</a> are putting the finishing touches on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/chapter-iv-lands-of-despair"><em>Chapter IV: Lands of Despair</em></a> while eyeing an early April release window.<br />
<br />
The update will bump the level cap to 70 and introduce several new explorable zones, all in service to a storyline that boasts a mighty demon bent on driving the lands of Taborea into chaos. New locales include contaminated forests, poisonous rivers, and more castles than you can shake a stick at. One such battlement belongs to Lord Grafu, and his dungeon boasts a plethora of challenging puzzles and altercations that stand between intrepid adventurers and the plunder contained within.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/frogster">Frogster</a> is also hosting a new in-game event beginning February 25th. Dubbed <a href="http://www.runesofmagic.com/en/news,id4844,mini_event_ancient_dreamland.html"><em>The Ancient Dreamland</em></a>, the festivities feature double TP and EP and runs through March 1st.<br />

Sector 4 isn't available for players of <a href="http://www.fallenearth.com"><em>Fallen Earth</em></a> just yet, but it's impossible not to know that it's out there, the fourth piece of a building world. As it turns out, however, Sector 4 is more than just the next zone -- it's a look into what the game's world was like before everything went to hell. In <a href="http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/02/18/fallen-earth-dev-diary-when-plants-rule-the-earth/">a new diary from Chris "Devo" Deavellar</a>, the aesthetics of the new zone are discussed, and he mentions that Sector 4 is the first branch away from the fairly realistic environments seen in the game up to this point.<br />

Deavellar mentions that just throwing a bunch of plant life around would have felt unsuitable for the game, but considering the newest sector highlights the insane experiments of the Globaltech company, the place needed an alien feel. Using several real-world plants such as kudzu for inspiration, the result is a world that still feels true to life in many ways... but also is filled with alien plants weeping amber fluid. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Fallen-Earth/">Fallen Earth</a></em> players should take a look at <a href="http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/02/18/fallen-earth-dev-diary-when-plants-rule-the-earth/">the full diary</a> to get the smallest hint of what this newest zone will look like, a reminder of what would have been the future... before the end of the world.<br />

If you've been <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/26/zentia-offers-lots-of-goodies-in-upcoming-patch-1-2/#">looking forward to the big expansion patch</a> for <a href="http://z.us.changyou.com/"><em>Zentia</em></a>, you're in luck. The patch <a href="http://us.changyou.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11050">has recently gone live</a>, giving players a chance to enjoy a plethora of content -- including the marriage system, a rather apropos addition that allows players to have both a ceremony and a reception to commemorate the happiest in-game day of their characters' lives. And if you're not quite feeling in the spirit of Valentine's Day, the newly increased level cap should still offer you plenty to work toward.<br />

East Island, a level 70-80 zone, has also been added to the game, complete with mounts and pets to locate. There's also a new Discipline system in place to allow players to focus on new class-based combat skills, helping to distinguish characters and focus specialization. The world of <a href="http://aika.gpotato.com/"><em>Aika Online</em></a> just got a bit bigger, as <a href="http://www.gala-net.com/">Gala-Net</a> and <a href="http://www.gpotato.com/">gPotato</a> have announced that the game's second expansion is now live. The update, titled <em>The Last Bastion</em>, increases the level cap from 60 to 70 and allows players to explore the creature-covered swamplands of Termiz.<br />

<em>The Last Bastion</em> also features over 100 new quests through which players will uncover the story of Termiz and assist in preventing the Dark Legion from further damaging the region. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aika-online"><em>Aika</em></a> boasts six player classes, five nations fighting for territorial control via castle sieges, relic thefts, and custom battlegrounds, as well as considerable PvE options. <div style="text-align: left;">The free-to-play developer <a href="http://en.gpotato.eu/">gPotato</a> has announced a third volume for its popular F2P fantasy title <a href="http://en.allods.gpotato.eu/"><em>Allods Online</em></a>. <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/the-fury-of-war">The Fury of War</a> follows in the footsteps of the second volume, <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/rise-of-gorluxor">Rise of Gorluxor</a>, by offering more free options, items, and content. However, this volume will focus more on guilds and high-level content. Two completely new zones will open up for players: the level 40 PvP areas (Melting Isle and the Junes Catacombs) and a level 40 allod called the Lost Isle.<br />
<br />
The Melting Isle is a faction-forgotten free-for-all PvP arena with a greater chest guaranteed to spawn if there are more than 20 participants. The Junes Catacombs also ignores factional alignments in this PvP maze, but as an added challenge, there are three bosses, including an ultimate boss, that groups must defeat in order to claim the instance rewards. Each time you enter this maze, it changes.<br />
<br />
After the launch of Volume 3, guilds in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/allods-online/"><em>Allods</em></a> can claim ownership of specific allods or entire astral sectors by a new guild-leveling mechanic. This new addition will pit guild against guild for control -- if you claim ownership, you must be able to defend it. Other guilds will want what you have.<br />

<a href="http://universe.lego.com/"><em>LEGO Universe</em></a> hasn't been out that long (it launched on October 26th to be exact), but <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/NetDevil/">NetDevil</a> and the <a href="http://www.lego.com/en-us/Default.aspx">LEGO Group</a> are already expanding the family-friendly MMO with three new zones developed by the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/world-build-league">World Build League</a>. The WBL, formerly known as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lego-universe"><em>LEGO Universe</em></a> Partners, is a group of LEGO fans from around the world who have partnered with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/netdevil">NetDevil</a> to create professional-quality player content. To access the new content, travel to Starbase 3001, jump on the launch pad, and select the new area of your choice. DeepFreeze, MoonBase, and Portabello await.<br />
<br />
As you might expect, DeepFreeze is a winter-themed zone where you can build a snowman or ride a Zamboni. MoonBase is designed to delight your inner sci-fi geek, as the low gravity atmosphere lets you high-jump to your heart's content while you're keeping a wary eye out for alien encounters. Portabello brings a fantasy feel to the game complete with dragon quest-givers and other genre staples.<br />

So, I had planned to go back to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/14/the-mog-log-experiment-rhio/">my soloing experiment</a> from <a href="http://www.playonline.com"><em>Final Fantasy XI</em></a> this week, but two things got in the way. The first is named <a href="http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a>'s open beta, and I'm not going to start talking about that because I won't <em>stop</em>. The second, however, is the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/September-version-update/">September version update</a> and the fast-approaching end of that timeline we saw <a href="http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/event/vanafes2010/">back at VanaFest</a>. While I'm not wholly qualified to talk about everything in the version update at the moment, I can certainly talk about what comes after.<br />
<br />
And here's why: This is a significant update for the game. It's the last update before the release of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Final-Fantasy-XIV/">Final Fantasy XIV</a></em> later this month, it's the second stage in the level cap increase, and it's the second-to-last additional content that we know we're getting. Fans of <a href="http://www.ncsoft.com">NCsoft's</a> long-running <a href="http://www.lineage2.com"><em>Lineage II</em></a> title are no doubt aware of the game's free (and extensive) expansions, and the latest, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/freya"><em>Freya</em></a>, is coming to a server near you today.  The titular Ice Queen is now handing out presents to players who visit her in towns, including vitality maintenance potions designed to give your character a temporary kick.  Additionally, heart-warming gifts found while hunting may be presented to Freya in exchange for gift boxes bearing a number of scrolls, potions, and gemstones.  These <a href="http://www.lineage2.com/archive/2010/08/freya_celebrati.html">Freya Celebration Items</a> will only last through September 7th, so don't delay.<br />

As for the expansion proper, it adds a number of features to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lineage-2"><em>Lineage II's</em></a> expansive game world, including new weapons, armor, abilities, and several new adventure areas including overland zones and dungeons. You're in luck, as today finds the new content live on the Public Test Server, a couple weeks ahead of its September 7th release date. Pre-existing PTS players will find that their characters have been wiped, which is a small price to pay for the chance to test the new content with accelerated XP and loot drop rates.<br />

We've got a treat for <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> players today, one that should provide more than a few smiles -- a video flyover of two more zones from <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com/goingrogue"><em>Going Rogue</em></a>. Where <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/02/video-guide-to-nova-praetoria-and-the-underground-for-city-of-he/">the first video</a> previewed the core of the capital and the (ideally invisible) underground, this one focuses on the Imperial City and Neutropolis. The former is the region where the vast majority of Praetorian citizens live and work every day, while the latter highlights the almost-otherworldly (pun intended) technology under development.<br />
<br />
While cityscapes are nothing new for the game's environs, the Imperial City is a cut above anything that's previously been featured. The billboards stand out, the architecture is unique, and at times the game almost looks like something other than <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/City-of-Heroes/"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> entirely. <a href="http://www.frogster.de">Frogster</a> and <a href="http://www.runewaker.com">Runewaker Entertainment</a> have announced that <a href="http://www.runesofmagic.com"><em>Runes of Magic</em></a> is adding even more content to its recent Chapter III publish, in the form of tomorrow's 3.0.3 update. The patch boasts an entirely new zone, the Northern Janost Forest, which also adds over 100 new quests to the free-to-play fantasy title. In addition to the new high-level content, the player level cap is being raised to 60.<br />
<br />
The patch is also introducing a new relationship system whereby players can bind themselves as lovers, friends, or as a master and an apprentice. Each pairing grants buffs to players when grouped with their significant others, and marriage is also possible via a wedding ring and a special chapel in the city of Varanas.<br />
<br />
Finally, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/frogster">Frogster</a> is implementing a new beginner pet to ease the newbie transition into the world of Taborea. It was <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franklin_Delano_Roosevelt">President Franklin Delano Roosevelt</a> who said, "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_only_thing_we_have_to_fear_is_fear_itself"><em>The only thing we have to fear is fear itself</em></a>." While it would be more than three-quarters of a century after that when <a href="http://allods.gpotato.com"><em>Allods Online</em></a> was released, he certainly could have been referring to the Fear of Death penalty that caused quite a bit of fear and rage among players. But that tortured analogy no longer applies, as today sees the release of the newest patch for the game, <a href="http://allods.gpotato.com/news/2010/07/07/revelations-of-gipat-now-live/">Revelations of Gipat</a>, which removes Fear of Death for good and puts <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/24/allods-online-will-replace-harsh-death-penalty/">a new death penalty into place</a>. <br />

For many of the game's players, removing the unnecessarily cash-shop-based penalty would be enough to make the patch laudable. But as was revealed when the team <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/02/allods-online-previews-the-next-big-patch/">released the patch notes last week</a>, the update also sees the addition of a new zone, a raise in level cap, and new content for everyone to enjoy. After the <a href="http://allods.gpotato.com/news/2010/07/06/reminder-allods-down-for-approximately-12-hours-tonight/">marathon maintenance session</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Allods-Online/"><em>Allods Online</em></a> is live again and ready for play -- it's worth checking out, even if the size of the patch might scare you off. This newest update called <a href="http://latale.ogplanet.com/intro/intro.htm"><em>Time Traveler</em></a> will offer players not only these three distinct new areas -- and a time machine to travel to them in -- but also adds in the new Guild Crops system. <br /> <br />What's a Guild Crop? Well, the idea is this: <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/LaTale/">La Tale</a></em> players will be able to grow plants with their guild mates in special guild rooms.
