What better place to learn more about a game based on comic books than a comic book convention? <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/marvel-heroes/">Marvel Heroes</a></em> had its own panel earlier today at the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/nycc">New York Comic Con</a>, where devs not only shared a new trailer but announced three new playable heroes. And luckily for folks who missed the chance to see the panel live, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Gazillion-Entertainment/">Gazillion Entertainment</a> has been sharing the announcements via <a href="https://twitter.com/MMMSociety">Twitter</a>! Along with such iconic heroes as The Hulk, Wolverine, and the Human Torch, players will also have the choice to play as Phoenix (Jean Grey), Luke Cage, and NOVA.<br />
<br />
Although fairly brief, the new features trailer shows off different abilities, a variety of costumes, a quick peek at some multiplayer zones, and a glimpse of a few iconic villains. Check it all out after the break.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/13/nycc-2012-new-marvel-heroes-characters-and-trailer-debut/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>NYCC 2012: New Marvel Heroes characters and trailer debut</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/13/nycc-2012-new-marvel-heroes-characters-and-trailer-debut/">NYCC 2012: New Marvel Heroes characters and trailer debut</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 13 Oct 2012 18:00:00 EST. Last weekend's big convention, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/New-York-Comic-Con-2011/">New York Comic Con</a>, hosted another panel on <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Wars--The-Old-Republic/">Star Wars: The Old Republic</a></em>. And perhaps to the surprise of the fans, this panel was all about numbers. Specifically, it was all about the numbers for upcoming content in the game, such as Flashpoints, Operations, and Warzones. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Stephen-Reid/">Stephen Reid</a> took his time to lay out <a href="http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/367/feature/5704/Star-Wars-The-Old-Repub%20lic-NYCC-11-Main-Panel-Recap.html">what players can expect from this content</a> and how many different areas players can expect, starting with 15 different Flashpoints at launch.<br />
<br />
The Flashpoints will not all be story-focused, according to Reid, with some focused more heavily on the puzzle or gameplay aspects. All of them, however, can be replayed at higher difficulties in the endgame. In addition, Reid showed off the upcoming fleet hubs for the game, the central gathering areas for players that feature vendors, auction systems, and a special "VIP Lounge" for people who purchased the Collector's Edition. With only a little over two months remaining until the game's launch, there's not much more time before <a href="http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/367/feature/5704/Star-Wars-The-Old-Repub%20lic-NYCC-11-Main-Panel-Recap.html">these promised features become a reality</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/17/star-wars-the-old-republic-talks-instanced-regions-and-hubs-at/">Star Wars: The Old Republic talks instanced regions and hubs at NYCC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 17 Oct 2011 11:00:00 EST. "Peace between Republic and Empire is crumbling. Every world, signs of war."<br />
<br />
Thus begins a two-minute journey through <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic's</em></a> setting, as the narrator takes us to a half-dozen worlds where conflict is brewing, people are being stabbed in the back, Bantha raiders are waving sticks above their heads, and players' mouths are salivating.<br />
<br />
This new trailer, <a href="http://www.swtor.com/news/news-article/20111014">Signs of War</a>, is being shown this weekend at the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/New-York-Comic-Con/">New York Comic Con</a>. While it might not be packed with new information, it's certainly a pulse-pounding buildup to this December's launch. From Jedi to Agents, every class gets its little moment to shine in it, packaged between explosions and large-scale conflict.<br />
<br />

For all of you European <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Wars-The-Old-Republic/">Star Wars: The Old Republic</a></em> fans out there who were planning to be sick from work on December 22nd for the game's launch, you'll now be doing it two days earlier. That's right -- if you plan to play the game at retail launch, you'll be doing it on the same day as the Yanks in North America: December 20th.<br />
<br />
The announcement was made today during <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/BioWare/">BioWare</a>'s New York Comic-Con panel, where our sister site Joystiq <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/14/star-wars-the-old-republic-launch-moved-up-to-dec-20-in-europe/">grabbed the news</a>. Mark October 13th through the 16th on your calendars, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> faithful, especially if you'll be anywhere in the vicinity of New York City.<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bioware">BioWare's</a> Hutt-sized Star Wars MMO will be hogging the spotlight at this year's New York Comic Con, and you'll have a couple of opportunities to get some hands-on time with the highly anticipated sci-fi title. The Alderaan and Huttball warzones will be playable at <em>SWTOR's</em> booth, while a few of the developers will be featured on three separate panels over the course of the event.<br />
<br />
If you like a little alcohol with your Star Wars, you'll also want to make note of a dev-hosted meet-and-greet at District 36 on Wednesday, October 12th. All the details are available at the official site, so what are you waiting for?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/07/the-old-republic-playable-at-new-york-comic-con/">The Old Republic playable at New York Comic Con</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 07 Oct 2011 19:30:00 EST. MMO fans traveling out to the Big Apple for the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/New-York-Comic-Con/">New York Comic Con</a> next weekend have another potential "must see" on their event list: <a href="http://www.thesecretworld.com/news/check_out_the_secret_world_at_new_york_comiccon">an exclusive panel</a> of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-secret-world"><em>The Secret World</em></a> with the devs.<br />
<br />
The panel will take place on Friday, October 14th at 4:00 p.m. EDT in room 1A24. It's here that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom/">Funcom</a> devs <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Ragnar-Tornquist/">Ragnar T&oslash;rnquist</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dag-scheve/">Dag Scheve</a> will not only present an all-new live demo of the upcoming conspiracy MMO but field questions from the audience in as candid a manner as possible.<br />
<br />
Of course, considering the game in question, we note that this could be a trap by the Old Gods to swallow the souls of all those attending and turn them into husks to do the Old Gods' bidding, but that's just the chance you'll have to take.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/07/the-panel-is-true-the-secret-world-preps-a-nycc-appearance/">The panel is true: The Secret World preps a NYCC appearance</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 07 Oct 2011 11:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Trion-Worlds/">Trion Worlds</a> has <em>three</em> gaming worlds up its sleeve right now, and it aims to talk about all of them at this year's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/New-York-Comic-Con/">New York Comic Con</a>. In fact, the company has announced that several of its developers will participate in a panel "to discuss the future of [its] online gaming portfolio."<br />
<br />
<em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/RIFT/">RIFT</a></em> junkies can look forward to a chat with Design Producer Hal Hanlin and Lore Lead Morgan Lockhart about the studio's upcoming plans for the fantasy MMO, while MMORTS fans will get their PvE and PvP on with Senior Producer Chris Lena from <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/End-of-Nations/">End of Nations</a></em>. And attendees looking for their shooter fix won't be left out: Rob Hill, Senior Producer for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Defiance/">Defiance</a></em>, will be on hand to cover the MMOFPS and its integration with the Syfy show.<br />
<br />
The panel takes places on Friday, October 14th, from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. EDT in room 1A24. Tickets for the con are still available on the <a href="http://www.newyorkcomiccon.com/">official NYCC website</a>.<br />

If you were one of the lucky fans who attended the <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> panel at <a href="http://www.newyorkcomiccon.com/">New York Comic Con</a>, you were treated to a slideshow of typically beautiful concept art.<br />
<br />
Those of us who did not attend get to share that privilege now, thanks to <a href="http://www.arena.net">ArenaNet</a>. The developers have set the slideshow to music and released it as an HD video. The slideshow encompasses art from all five playable races, and the variety of images shown may well make an extra viewing or two worthwhile. <br />
<br />

<a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> was all over <a href="http://www.newyorkcomiccon.com/">New York Comic Con</a>. The folks at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Sony-Online-Entertainment/">Sony Online Entertainment</a> presented a playable demo on the show floor, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/11/nycc-2010-dcuos-qanda-panel-and-fan-event-page-1/">an info-laden panel</a> highlighting character creation and a super-exclusive fan event with 500 of <em>DCUO's</em> biggest fans. Before the fan event got popping, Massively enjoyed the opportunity to sit down with comics legend <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jim-lee/">Jim Lee</a> and <em>DCUO</em> Art Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mark-anderson/">Mark Anderson</a>. <br />
<br />
Lee, co-publisher of DC Comics and executive creative director of <em>DCUO</em>, and Anderson shared some special insights into the game's development. Conversation ranged from <em>DCUO's</em> similarity to <em>Grand Theft Auto</em> to Lee's introduction to the MMO genre.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/13/nycc-2010-interview-with-dcuos-jim-lee-and-mark-anderson/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>NYCC 2010: Interview with DCUO's Jim Lee and Mark Anderson</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/13/nycc-2010-interview-with-dcuos-jim-lee-and-mark-anderson/">NYCC 2010: Interview with DCUO's Jim Lee and Mark Anderson</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 13 Oct 2010 11:30:00 EST. The gods of <a href="http://www.newyorkcomiccon.com/">New York Comic Con</a> smiled upon Detective Comics fans and MMO junkies alike this weekend, as <a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> kicked butt and took questions at not one, but a senses-shattering <em>two</em> Q&amp;A sessions on Saturday. Conventioneers enjoyed a glimpse into the character-creation process at the "Creating the Next Legend Panel," and then <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Sony-Online-Entertainment/">Sony Online Entertainment</a> invited fans to a special Q&amp;A event afterward. And I would not be exaggerating if I said the audience reaction was riotously positive.<br />
<br />
Executive Creative Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jim-lee/">Jim Lee</a>, Creative Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Chris-Cao/">Chris Cao</a> and Art Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mark-anderson/">Mark Anderson</a> shared details and fielded dozens of questions about the DC-based MMO at both events. Discussion ranged from costume creation to endgame content to the game's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/04/dc-universe-online-delayed-until-early-2011/">recent delay to early 2011</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/12/nycc-2010-dcuos-qanda-panel-and-fan-event/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>NYCC 2010: DCUO's Q&amp;A panel and fan event</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/12/nycc-2010-dcuos-qanda-panel-and-fan-event/">NYCC 2010: DCUO's Q&amp;A panel and fan event</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 12 Oct 2010 15:00:00 EST. If there were an award for the most controversial game on Massively, that award would probably have to go to <a href="http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a>. It's a game with a very different approach to many of the elements that are considered de rigueur for MMOs, which has produced a great deal of affection from some players, a great deal of enmity from others, and a flamewar that burgeons in nearly any thread about even the most innocuous news.<br />
<br />
I had a chance to sit down at <a href="http://www.newyorkcomiccon.com/">New York Comic Con</a> with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Sage-Sundi/">Sage Sundi</a>, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/final-fantasy-xiv">FFXIV's</a></em> global online producer, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Yasu-Kurosawa/">Yasu Kurosawa</a>, <em>FFXIV's</em> North American online producer. It was certainly an interesting experience to chat with two of the people responsible in no small part for one of my personal favorite games, but both gentlemen were very polite to discuss the game, its worldwide community, and what lessons had been learned already from launch.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/11/nycc-2010-our-interview-with-ffxivs-sage-sundi-and-yasu-kurosa/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>NYCC 2010: Our interview with FFXIV's Sage Sundi and Yasu Kurosawa</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/11/nycc-2010-our-interview-with-ffxivs-sage-sundi-and-yasu-kurosa/">NYCC 2010: Our interview with FFXIV's Sage Sundi and Yasu Kurosawa</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 11 Oct 2010 11:00:00 EST. It's the end of the convention season, and <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> fans on the East Coast managed to get one last treat -- another chance with the development team that had long been anchored firmly on the other side of the country. The team's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/28/pax-east-2010-city-of-heroes-panel-reveals-many-things/">panel in March</a> at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/PAX-East-2010/">PAX East</a> saw the revelation of several new facts about the game, including the first announcement of Kinetic Melee and Electric Control, and the panel that closes out the year at <a href="http://www.newyorkcomiccon.com/">New York Comic Con</a> contained several interesting new facts as well.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Melissa-Bianco/">Melissa Bianco</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/David-Nakayama/">David Nakayama</a>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Jesse-Caceres/">Jesse Caceres</a> were all in attendance, with the panel overseen by community representative <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Tia-Parurahi/">Tia Parurahi</a>. With <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com/goingrogue"><em>Going Rogue</em></a> having been out for nearly two months, this panel focused on the upcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Issue-19/">Issue 19</a> and what the changes mean for the game, as well as how much the development team is ramping up production to improve the game all around.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/10/nycc-2010-the-city-of-heroes-issue-19-panel/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>NYCC 2010: The City of Heroes Issue 19 panel</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/10/nycc-2010-the-city-of-heroes-issue-19-panel/">NYCC 2010: The City of Heroes Issue 19 panel</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 10 Oct 2010 17:00:00 EST. So the <a href="http://www.newyorkcomiccon.com/">New York Comic Con</a> is in full swing, and the fact that it's here already reminds us of just how many game-related cons there are scattered throughout the calendar year. Whether it's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/new-york-comic-con">NYCC</a>, <a href="http://www.dragoncon.org/">Dragon Con</a>, <a href="http://www.e3expo.com/">E3</a>, <a href="http://www.gdconf.com/">GDC</a>, or the various flavors of <a href="http://www.paxsite.com/paxeast/index.php">PAX</a>, there always seems to be something just around the corner that calls for hotel reservations and airline tickets. More often than not, the next convention on the circuit sneaks right up on us before we manage to shake the jet lag from the last one.<br />

While we'd like nothing better than to shirk responsibilities and tour the world of gaming and pop culture conventions for a year, work must occasionally intrude, and most of us have to pick and choose our events. What about you Massively readers? Did you attend NYCC this weekend, and are you a regular on the gaming convention circuit?<br />

If <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/14/arenanet-preparing-for-gamescom-and-pax/">Germany and Seattle</a> were just too far away, you may be disappointed that you haven't gotten to experience the <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> demo yet. <br />
<br />
You can cheer up, because <a href="http://www.arena.net">ArenaNet</a> announced last night that it's taking its show on the road and heading for the east coast. <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/party-with-arenanet-at-new-york-city-comic-con">ArenaNet will be at New York Comic Con</a>, hosting a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> panel titled Building a Better MMO. Even better, the developers will be hosting a meet-and-greet that includes a few <em>GW2</em> demo stations. Massively will be there to bring you all the latest MMO news, and we're sure you are just as excited as we are for the next demo of <em>Guild Wars 2</em>.<br />
<br />
More details are still to come regarding the time and location of Friday night's meet-and-greet, so keep your eye on the <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/">ArenaNet blog</a> for the next announcement.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/18/guild-wars-2-making-an-appearance-at-new-york-comic-con/">Guild Wars 2 making an appearance at New York Comic Con</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 18 Sep 2010 13:00:00 EST. However, it seems like <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic</a> is not against the idea of dropping console and PC players into the same server. While no revelations were given about which (both?) console would see the game, apparently both Sony and Microsoft are excited at the prospect. ZInkievich stressed that ultimately their choice will have a lot to do with how certification for patches is handled.<br /><br />It's certainly a touchy subject, but <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Final-Fantasy-XI/">Final Fantasy XI</a></em> seems to have handled itself well on the Xbox 360. If we had to throw down a guess, it would be that we're likely to see the game his Microsoft's console at the very least. But until Cryptic makes an announcement, everyone will just have to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/11/grouping-procedural-content-and-pvp-in-star-trek-online/">assume they'll be boldly clicking</a>, etc, etc.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/13/star-trek-online-not-getting-that-quirky-captain-kirk-smirk/">Star Trek Online not getting that quirky Captain Kirk smirk</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 13 Feb 2009 11:00:00 EST. All right, so maybe the 200 mundane weapons available in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Champions-Online/">Champions Online</a></em> won't fit into a vehicle -- but it makes for some startling imagery. Unfortunately, <a href="http://www.newsarama.com/games/020910-NYCC-Cryptic.html">according to the panel which took place</a> last weekend at the New York Comic-con, <em>Champions Online</em> is unlikely to launch with drivable <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHj2Da-gEeI">wheels of steel</a> or any other form of bodacious transportation. But don't feel like all is lost, because Cryptic was quick mention that situation would be remedied soon after CO-day.<br /><br />(Everyone calls launch day CO-day, right?)<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/13/vehicles-200-weapons-and-hospitalized-writers-in-champions-onli/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Vehicles, 200 weapons and hospitalized writers in Champions Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/13/vehicles-200-weapons-and-hospitalized-writers-in-champions-onli/">Vehicles, 200 weapons and hospitalized writers in Champions Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 13 Feb 2009 10:00:00 EST. <em><a href="http://www.startrekonline.com">Star Trek Online's</a></em> attendance of the New York Comic-con <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/08/watch-this-strinkingly-good-star-trek-online-character-customization-video/">has happily resulted in some new information</a> finding it's way to the internet. As such, <a href="http://www.allakhazam.com/story.html?story=16886">Allakhazam has a good write-up</a> of their time spent with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic">Cryptic's</a> Craig Zinkievich, and we've concentrated it down into the newest puzzle pieces of information.<br /><br /> Firstly, players will always play planet content in groups of five, either with four NPCs or four friendly players. NPCs fill any gaps, so three friends could play together with two NPC allies trotting alongside them. Additionally, Cryptic says their goal is to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/09/ships-npcs-and-art-direction-in-newest-star-trek-online-ask-cry/">truly encapsulate the spirit of Star Trek</a> by allowing players to be the first to discover locations and planets. To that end, procedurally generated space content will compliment the manually created variety.<br /><br />The final new gameplay-related information is that PvP functionality <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/25/first-starfleet-ship-detailed-for-star-trek-online/">already exists in the game</a> now -- which is a promising piece of news considering the amount of balancing time required to make such a feature work properly.<br /> <br /> Lastly, it seems like a late 2009 or early 2010 launch date isn't entirely out of the question. While Zinkievich didn't give any actual dates, he did say the game could be coming sooner than expected, albeit sometime after Champions Online hits retail shelves.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/11/grouping-procedural-content-and-pvp-in-star-trek-online/">Grouping, procedural content and PvP in Star Trek Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 11 Feb 2009 19:00:00 EST. While taking down the bad guys in a game is fun, sometimes it's good to be bad, as the newest gameplay footage we've seen of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online"><em>DCUO</em></a> from New York Comic Con shows us.<br /><br />We were pretty excited when we noticed this over at <a href="http://www.yellowspandex.com">Limited Edition</a> today and it's certainly worth a look if you're into the superhero games genre. The <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/45242.html">GameTrailers video</a> is a walkthrough of an open PvP area, from the perspective of a psychotic clown with psi-blasts, blazing speed, and freakish strength. Their studio's site announced that they'll be using Twitter at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/new-york-comic-con ">NYCC</a>, so those of you out there who can't make the trip to New York (or simply aren't willing to deal with the East Coast winter) can follow what they're doing or announcing at their booth, and of course during the panels. The main twitters coming from <a href="http://www.crypticstudios.com">Cryptic Studios</a> are through <a href="http://twitter.com/CrypticStudios">http://twitter.com/CrypticStudios</a>, but other members of the studio's team can be obsessively monitored as well:<br /><br />

If you're planning on heading to the <a href="http://www.nycomiccon.com/App/homepage.cfm?moduleid=2577&amp;appname=100453">New York Comic-Con</a> this year then be prepared to see <em><a href="http://dcuo.station.sony.com/">DC Universe Online</a></em> in full force. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE/">SOE</a> is pulling out all the stops this time around, including the first-ever villain play via a new playable demo at the SOE booth on the show floor. Something else attendees won't want to miss will be the panel on Saturday, February 7th where a mysterious new creative team member <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/25/killer-croc-comes-to-dc-universe-online/">will be revealed and opened</a> to questions along with Jim Lee, Geoff Johns, SOE developers Wes Yanagi, Jens Andersen and Jared Carr.<br /><br />Immediately after the Saturday panel, SOE will be holding a fan event where the new villain-focused demo will be available for further play. Plus, Jim Lee and Geoff Johns will be on hand to speak about the game some more -- as if they won't have been pelted by fervent fan questions already. Still, the whole thing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/27/comparing-and-contrasting-champions-online-and-dc-universe-onlin/">sounds like a ton of fun</a> for anyone looking forward to <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/DC-Universe-Online/">DC Universe Online</a></em> and the new superhero MMOs in general.<br /><br />Find full details after the cut.<hr />

Cryptic Studios will be showing off <em><a href="http://www.champions-online.com">Champions Online</a> </em>at <a href="http://www.nycomiccon.com/App/homepage.cfm?moduleid=2577&amp;appname=100453">New York Comic Con</a> (which takes place in February from the 6th to the 8th) and <a href="http://www.champions-online.com/node/3137">they want you to know</a> that you will be handsomely rewarded if you are able to pay them a visit. Not only will there be new playable demos to explore, but fans will also be treated to swag, and the possibility of beta keys. The beta keys will be awarded to contest winners, but we've got no idea what the contests might be, so you'd best brush up on your feats of strength, eye-laser marksmanship, and flight dexterity, just to be safe. <a href="http://ccpgames.com">CCP</a> character artist Ben Mathis gave a 30 minute presentation <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/24/ambulation-project-closer-to-reality/">at the New York Comic Con</a> last month. He talked mostly about the forthcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ambulation">Ambulation expansion,</a> which will allow <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> players to leave their cockpits and walk around the interiors of space stations with customizable, 3D avatars. <a href="http://www.tentonhammer.com">Ten Ton Hammer</a> has a <a href="http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/32542">Flash video of the entire session.</a><br /><br />We saw some of the presented content <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/20/gdc08-eve-onlines-space-stations/">at GDC earlier this year,</a> but there's some new stuff in this video, too. As we've noted before, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP</a> isn't holding back; <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ambulation">Ambulation</a> is very technically impressive. It's ironic that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> -- a game focused almost entirely on spaceships instead of face-to-face interactions -- might soon carry the most advanced avatar creation tools on the market.<br /><br />Players will be able to customize every thing from body fat to the materials from which their clothes are made. Female avatars will have makeup customization options so powerful that the differentiation between lip gloss and lip stick will be noticeable. New animation blending technology will enable realistic transitions between disparate facial expressions. Infinite morph points will be available when faces are molded, thanks to creative use of shaders. CCP's ambition is astonishing -- let's hope the reality lives up to the promise in the end.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/15/video-of-ccp-artists-ambulation-presentation-available/">Video of CCP artist's Ambulation presentation available</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 15 May 2008 20:00:00 EST. Over at <em><a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em>'s</a> </em>pavilion at <a href="http://www.nycomiccon.com/">New York Comic Con</a>, one man would add to the hopes and dreams of thousands. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/matt-woodward">Matt Woodward</a> took a few moments of his time to talk to TenTonHammer on a subject close to the heart of many capsuleers. The subject? <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> of course, but most importantly, the expansion <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/empyrean-age"><em>Empyrean Age</em></a>. Take a few moments to put aside those evil schemes, dock, grab a Quafe, and tune in because the interview is packed with exciting hints at what is to come. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/31039">Matt explains in the interview</a> that <em>Empyrean Age</em> will have fighting, glory, new missions and reputation, and plenty of fleet battles. One of the points made by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/25/eve-online-braces-for-total-war-in-the-expansion-empryian-age/">Matt is that "the big fight that is coming"</a> will allow everyone to be involved in one way or another. Rewards will be given, the front will shift, and the design is being hashed out to bring empire, lowsec, and 0.0 players together to duke it out. The expansion is going to pack one hell of a punch and is long overdue in the minds of many <em>EVE</em> pilots. When the expansion finally does arrive, players will rejoice as new ways to destroy one another are introduced. To us, that smells like victory.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/02/matt-woodward-interview-gives-us-a-glimpse-at-empyrean-age/">Matt Woodward interview gives us a glimpse at Empyrean Age</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 02 May 2008 21:00:00 EST. The motto of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios/">38 Studios</a> is quite ironic: "World Domination Through Gaming". This from the company that employs Curt Schilling, Todd McFarlane, R.A. Salvatore and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/17/ex-everquest-lead-designer-to-join-38-studios/">every SOE employee they can get their hands on</a>. We think they're getting the hang of the whole <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5TU8o6TvNk">world-domination thing</a>, but what about the direction of the company and their MMO project itself?<br /><br />In a <a href="http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/31104">recent interview</a> at <a href="http://www.nycomiccon.com/App/homepage.cfm?moduleid=2577&amp;appname=100453">New York Comic Con</a>, Scott Cuthbertson, Jeff Murchie, Steve Danuser and Rich Gallup described themselves as "right on track". They discuss some recent developments, such as their licensing of the Unreal and Big World Engines for use in their game. They also mention the fact that with McFarlane and Salvatore on board, it would be no surprise to see toys, comics, and novels about the world and its characters. As we stated in the most recent episode of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/24/massively-speaking-podcast-episode-2/"><em>Massively Speaking</em> podcast</a>, let's hope all this hype behind the company and game can really hit it out of the park. Yes, I went there.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/25/38-studios-continues-its-world-domination/">38 Studios continues its world domination</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 25 Apr 2008 07:00:00 EST.
