They were part of the force behind many MMOs you've known and loved, including <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jumpgate/">Jumpgate</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/auto-assault/">Auto Assault</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/lego-universe/">LEGO Universe</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/rift">RIFT</a></em>, and<em> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/league-of-legends/">League of Legends</a></em>, and now they're banding together for a new cause funded by crowdsourcing. They're the developers at <a href="http://www.endgames.net/">END Games</a>, and they hope to raise <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1065318294/squad-wars">a quarter of a million dollars</a> to create a multiplayer space combat game.<br />
<br />
Despite the team's legacy, however, this new title will not be an MMO. Titled <em>Squad Wars</em>, the proposed project will blossom into a frantic starfighter game that will pit squads of players against each other in the deadly vacuum of space. Instead of focusing on a persistent world, <em>Squad Wars </em>will offer packaged scenarios that will "ensure the most fun every time you login."<br />
<br />
END Games is also notable in that two of its members were founders of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/netdevil/">NetDevil</a>: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/scott-brown">Scott Brown</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ryan-seabury/">Ryan Seabury</a>. As of the time of this writing, END Games has $1,430 toward its goal, which must be attained by May 19th for the project to proceed.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/19/ex-mmo-devs-attempt-to-fund-space-combat-game-via-kickstarter/">Ex-MMO devs aim to fund space combat game via Kickstarter</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 19 Apr 2012 16:00:00 EST. For pen-and-paper RPG players, Pathfinder remains a perennial favorite game setting. Those players may find themselves excited to know, then, that <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/goblinworks">Goblinworks</a> has announced <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/pathfinder-online"><em>Pathfinder Online</em></a>. This MMORPG adaptation of the extremely popular system will be a "hybrid sandbox/theme park-style MMO roleplaying game." The title will feature a "robust trading system [that] puts players in control of the world's economy," which should be wonderful for players who like to work the market. Characters can also establish settlements and expand them into full kingdoms while raising an army to help defend their turf.<br />
	<br />
	The announcement boasts randomly generated events, as well, stating that "as settlements develop, the surrounding wilderness develops more complex and challenging features." The goal appears to be not just to create a game, but in fact to bring to life a real, evolving world. Pathfinder fans should keep their eyes on Goblinworks' official site, where further development updates will be posted.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/22/goblinworks-announces-pathfinder-online/">Goblinworks announces Pathfinder Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 22 Nov 2011 19:00:00 EST. Launch day, whether it's for a new game or just a new expansion, is usually a pretty crazy time. Everything is new and untested, which means that some builds and classes will be overpowered, some elements of the game aren't working as intended, and there are going to be bugs. But even with all of that, there's something that only can be found in that rush toward the new classes, new level cap, new areas, or even just to see the most of the world in a short span of time. The game is <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_car_smell">never new again</a>, after all.<br />
<br />
With our current amount of knowledge about every facet of a game's release schedule, not to mention plenty of open and closed betas to get pre-launch information, we're generally able to be there for any game we want on the ground floor. Still, there are probably games from yesterday that you missed for whatever reason, or games that you didn't play then that you <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-matrix-online/">can't</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/tabula-rasa/">play</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/asherons-call-2/">now</a>. What game do you wish you had been involved with from the beginning? Is it a game whose <a href="http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/players/index.vm">updates massively changed how it worked</a>, a game <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/auto-assault">that didn't last as long as you'd like</a>, or one that's still going but <a href="http://www.lotro.com">just wasn't on your list back then</a>?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/10/the-daily-grind-i-would-like-to-have-been-there/">The Daily Grind: I would like to have been there</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 10 Mar 2010 08:00:00 EST. <span style="float: left; margin-right: 10px; margin-top: 7px;"><script> digg_url = 'http://digg.com/pc_games/Aion_is_the_single_most_pre_ordered_MMO_this_year'; </script> <script src=" http://digg.com/api/diggthis.js"></script></span> In a piece of news that we're betting surprises precisely nobody at all, <a href="http://www.aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a> has just broken the 400,000 pre-order mark. What's notable about this number is that it's enough to make <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Aion/">Aion</a></em> the largest number of pre-orders on an MMO for 2009. As <em>Aion</em> is also <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/29/aion-collectors-edition-pre-orders-top-steam-weekly-sales?icid=sphere_blogsmith_inpage_massively">holding</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/27/fallen-earth-beats-out-aion-in-d2d-sales-last-week/">strong</a> in the Steam and Direct2Drive sales charts, we wonder how many more we'll see added to that number before the official launch next Tuesday. <br />
<br />
With highly polished graphics, over two million words of quest text, and a series of tweaks to make <em>Aion</em> more Western-friendly, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/NCsoft/">NCsoft</a> seems to have finally hit the right stride with Western MMO gamers. That said, as we've learned from all the other games that have come before it, the real numbers that count are the <em>retention</em> numbers after the initial launch. Whether or not <em>Aion</em> is the goose that lays the golden egg - at least in terms of the Western markets - we'll have to wait and see.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/17/aion-is-the-single-most-pre-ordered-mmo-this-year/">Aion is the single most pre-ordered MMO this year</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 17 Sep 2009 20:00:00 EST. <div align="center"><a href="http://www.huxleygame.com/huxley_screenshots.php"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/huxley_052908_425.jpg" alt="" /></a> </div>
<div align="left" style="text-align: left;">It is a curious thing to hear of a game being themed after a classic speculative fiction novel. It's even more curious because the novel in question, <em><a href="http://www.huxley.net/bnw/index.html">Brave New World</a></em>, has little in common with <em><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120201/">Starship Troopers</a></em> (as the game's images suggest) and a whole lot in common with <em><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387808/">Idiocracy</a> </em>(did they have sex hormone gum in that movie?). <span style="font-style: italic;">Brave New World </span>itself was <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aldous_Huxley">Aldous Huxley</a>'s take on American excessive trust in technology, the future, manufacturing, science, and hedonism, culminating in images such as babies being processed in factories instead of born, people being altered to meet almost cookie cutter standards of beauty, and sex being so casual as to almost require assigned seating. One can only imagine what Aldous Huxley would think of the United States in 2008.<br /></div>
</div>
<br /><a href="http://www.huxleygame.com/">Huxley</a> promises to be a great game combining the MMO and FPS genres in a new and entertaining fashion, and I am all for creativity and license. But that's just the problem. When I heard about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/huxley/">Huxley</a> the game, my mind immediately leaped to the possibilities of some other first person shooter games derived from the other works of Aldous Huxley, and frankly, that boggles the mind.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/29/huxley-a-brave-new-world/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Huxley: a Brave New World?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/29/huxley-a-brave-new-world/">Huxley: a Brave New World?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 29 May 2008 14:30:00 EST. Epic told <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com">Gamasutra</a> that the new game is an online title for the PC. There are lots of different kinds of online titles, but AcroGames is partly comprised of former <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lineage-2"><em>Lineage II</em></a> team members, so it's a good, educated guess to suggest that the new title is an MMO. Also, <em>Lineage II</em> was developed using the previous Unreal Engine iteration. <br /><br />Epic VP Jay Wilbur was <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=16430">quoted in Gamasutra,</a> saying: "AcroGames is a promising team comprised of top talent and we look forward to working with them. We are committed to supporting the Asian game market with best of breed development tools, and our agreement with AcroGames marks a significant achievement in this effort."<br /><br />In an <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/2556/the_unreal_man_mark_rein_speaks.php">interview</a> published just yesterday, Epic's Mark Rein described the language-barrier-related challenges Epic is having with supporting its engine in non-English speaking countries (specifically Japan, in that article). One wonders if they'll run into the same troubles when working with a Korean studio.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/29/acrogames-using-unreal-engine-in-new-online-game/">AcroGames using Unreal Engine in new online game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 29 Nov 2007 18:30:00 EST.
