Two weeks ago, the escalating drama in <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> saw me <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/26/eve-evolved-the-day-that-eve-online-died/">drained of my normal enthusiasm</a> as I contemplated the very real possibility that my time in the game I love was coming to an end. While the forums were filled with the most vocal and angry players, discussions with veteran players featured mainly disappointment and a distinct sadness. For <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/26/ccp-issues-brief-mea-culpa-eve-csm-to-meet-with-devs/">those few days spent in limbo waiting for the results</a> of the emergency CSM meeting, I and many of my in-game friends remained a hair's breadth from giving up on <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/">EVE</a></em> entirely.<br />
<br />
It was a delicate situation based more on perception and poor communication than intent or fact, and I think CCP pulled things back well with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/02/ccp-responds-to-monoclegate-reaches-consensus-with-players/">formal statements from both itself and the CSM</a> in addition to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/06/eve-online-press-conference-answers-vital-questions-transcript/">an in-depth follow-up press conference</a>. One of the big points to come out of the press conference was that while CCP and the CSM are both confident that none of the future microtransaction plans are game-breaking, the company did not restrict itself to vanity goods such as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/incarna/"><em>Incarna</em></a> clothing.<br />
<br />
While the CSM <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=935">was convinced that CCP planned</a> only to produce pure vanity goods, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-zulu/">CCP Zulu</a> was careful not to rule out gameplay-affecting microtransactions altogether. Both CCP and the CSM also talked about "game-breaking" sales rather than using a clearer term like "gameplay-affecting" or "non-vanity." It's reasonable then to assume that in the future we might eventually get non-vanity goods that do interact with gameplay but aren't game-breaking in terms of balance, mechanics or interaction with the in-game economy.<br />
<br />
In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-evolved/">EVE Evolved</a>, I show exactly why options like selling ships would be game-breaking and then let my imagination run wild as I speculate on possible non-vanity microtransactions for the far future that shouldn't disrupt gameplay.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/10/eve-evolved-the-evolution-of-microtransactions/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: The evolution of microtransactions</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/10/eve-evolved-the-evolution-of-microtransactions/">EVE Evolved: The evolution of microtransactions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 10 Jul 2011 18:00:00 EST. Having progressed from being a small independent studio in Iceland to a successful multinational industry leader, <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>'s developer <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a> has always had a reputation for being very close to the game's playerbase. Back in July, this view was soured when information from devblogs and the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/30/eve-csm-delegates-voice-disapproval-of-ccps-attitude-to-council/">June CSM summit</a> seemed to suggest that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> would receive <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/01/eve-evolved-dissent-in-the-eve-community/">no bug-fixes or iterations on old gameplay features</a> for at least 18 months. Players were in an uproar, and a growing perception began to spread that CCP was selling current <em>EVE</em> players short in order to focus on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/incarna/"><em>Incarna</em></a>.<br />
<br />
In the past six months, things at CCP have take a complete 180-degree turn. Planetary Interaction has received the iteration players were promised, with gameplay tweaks and user interface fixes being deployed at a rapid pace. CCP also instituted team GridLock, whose purpose was <a href="http://www.massively.com/2010/08/22/eve-evolved-the-war-on-lag/">to wage an all-out war on lag</a> and fleet issues. In a refreshing and extremely welcome turn of affairs, CCP has been making a gargantuan effort lately to communicate with the players about upcoming changes and collect feedback. Though <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp">regular technical devblogs</a> and pre-released test-server patches, players have been kept more informed than ever about what's going on behind the scenes at CCP HQ.<br />
<br />
Most recently, a series of 18 developer videos was released leading up to the <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/incursion">Incursion</a></em> expansion's final release today. Topics covered include battle reports from the ongoing war on lag, information on server optimisations that have been made recently, updates to planetary interaction, and other interesting topics. Skip past the cut for a detailed roundup of all 18 videos, all hosted on <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/CCPGAMES">CCP's official YouTube page</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/18/massivelys-eve-online-incursion-video-devblog-roundup/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively's EVE Online Incursion video devblog roundup</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/18/massivelys-eve-online-incursion-video-devblog-roundup/">Massively's EVE Online Incursion video devblog roundup</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 18 Jan 2011 15:30:00 EST. Sometimes it seems as though the entire MMO industry is moving toward microtransaction-based pricing schemes. With <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/free-to-play/">the success of free-to-play</a> titles like <a href="http://www.runesofmagic.com"><em>Runes of Magic</em></a> and <a href="http://www.freerealms.com"><em>Free Realms</em></a>, it's clear that microtransactions are becoming a popular alternative to the standard subscription model. Famously, <a href="http://www.ddo.com"><em>Dungeons and Dragons Online</em></a> also proved that a hybrid model with both subscription and microtransaction options could be a great success. Even <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> has hopped on the microtransaction bandwagon with its <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/04/16/anti-aliased-shut-up-people-come-buy-my-horse/">infamous sparkle pony</a> and cosmetic pets.<br />
<br />
With the industry moving firmly in one direction, questions have been raised over whether <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> will ever implement any kind of microtransactions. Believe it or not, the first steps toward doing just that have already been taken. It was discovered some time ago that the <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/incursion/"><em>Incursion</em></a> expansion <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/04/pax-2010-ccp-unveils-eve-onlines-latest-expansion/">this winter</a> would give players the ability to buy extra neural remaps with PLEX. <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Neural_remapping">Neural remapping allows players to re-assign</a> a character's attributes using a points-based system. As attributes are only used to determine the speed with which skills train, remaps allow players to max out the stats required to train a particular branch of skills.<br />
<br />
In this opinion piece, I look at the microtransaction debate currently raging in the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> community and weigh in with my opinions on this controversial issue.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/10/eve-evolved-eve-players-debate-microtransactions/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: EVE players debate microtransactions</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/10/eve-evolved-eve-players-debate-microtransactions/">EVE Evolved: EVE players debate microtransactions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 10 Oct 2010 18:00:00 EST. That is, until the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/apocrypha"><em>Apocrypha</em> expansion</a> launched, bringing <em>EVE</em>'s <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/new-player-experience">New Player Experience</a> (NPE) with it. CCP Games aims to slowly ease new players into what is a rather complex game, giving them a feel for what they can already do and what they want to do in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/eve-visual-guide-the-birth-of-new-eden/">New Eden</a> over time. <br /><br />So how well does the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/06/massivelys-eve-online-apocrypha-expansion-hands-on/">New Player Experience for <em>EVE Online</em></a> tackle the difficulties of learning how to play one of the most complex MMOs on the market? Writing for Eurogamer, both <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jim-rossignol">Jim Rossignol</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/oli-welsh">Oli Welsh</a> write about the New Player Experience. Rossignol, from the viewpoint of a veteran player, and Welsh from the fresh perspective of a rookie. The end result is an overview of how <em>EVE</em> has changed, including a revamped tutorial and Neural Remapping (attribute respecs), as well as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/epic-mission-arcs">Epic Mission Arcs</a> that allow players to make choices in how <em>EVE</em>'s mission storylines progress.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/17/varying-perspectives-on-eve-onlines-new-player-experience/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Varying perspectives on EVE Online's new player experience</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/17/varying-perspectives-on-eve-onlines-new-player-experience/">Varying perspectives on EVE Online's new player experience</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 17 Mar 2009 13:00:00 EST. We jumped at the chance to find out more about the <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/apocrypha/index.html"><em>Apocrypha </em>expansion</a>, and Ward was kind enough to give us our own hands-on demo while answering our questions about where <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> is heading. We were pleasantly surprised to find that <em>EVE</em>'s lead writer Tony Gonzales was on hand as well. Fans of the game's backstory will know him for writing <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Eve-Empyrean-GollanczF-Tony-Gonzales/dp/0575080353">The Empyrean Age novel</a>, which chronicled the events leading up to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/eve-visual-guide-the-birth-of-new-eden/">New Eden's factional warfare</a>. <br /><br /><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/apocrypha"><span style="font-style: italic;">Apocrypha</span></a> will be the most significant expansion in <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span>'s history to date, introducing new -- and some controversial -- features while revamping existing aspects of the game. Ultimately the aim of <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a> with <span style="font-style: italic;">Apocrypha</span> is to make <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span> accessible to more gamers while adding depth for the existing playerbase. The <span style="font-style: italic;">Apocrypha</span> expansion launch will coincide with <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span> <span style="font-style: italic;">Online</span>'s retail release on March 10th. Leading up to that date, a number of the CCP developers have dropped info about what's on the way through dev blogs and the occasional interview, but the expansion seen as a whole is mind-blowing. What we have for you here is the most complete look at the <span style="font-style: italic;">Apocrypha</span> expansion offered to date, in one place, and much of it from the developers themselves. We've tackled <em>Apocrypha</em> in four parts: the New Player Experience, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/06/massivelys-apocrypha-expansion-hands-on-epic-mission-arcs-and/">Epic Mission Arcs &amp; Tech III</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/06/massivelys-apocrypha-expansion-hands-on-true-exploration/">True Exploration</a>, and the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/06/massivelys-apocrypha-expansion-hands-on-the-sleepers/">Sleepers</a>.<br /><br />Strap yourself in and get ready for Massively's exclusive hands-on with the <span style="font-style: italic;">Apocrypha</span> expansion for <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span> <span style="font-style: italic;">Online</span>.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-online-apocrypha-expansion/">EVE Online Apocrypha expansion</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-online-apocrypha-expansion/#1413058"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/03/1920x1200_minmatar_t3_wip_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-online-apocrypha-expansion/#1413059"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/03/caldari_v3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-online-apocrypha-expansion/#1413057"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/03/1920x1200_caldari_t3_wip_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-online-apocrypha-expansion/#1413169"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/03/picture-3_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-online-apocrypha-expansion/#1413167"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/03/picture-6_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/06/massivelys-eve-online-apocrypha-expansion-hands-on/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively's EVE Online Apocrypha expansion hands-on</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/06/massivelys-eve-online-apocrypha-expansion-hands-on/">Massively's EVE Online Apocrypha expansion hands-on</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 06 Mar 2009 17:00:00 EST.
