Video game streaming software and systems is a hot topic. I've mentioned more than once that I think browser-based gaming (specifically MMOs) will be the main way we get our MMO fix within five years. Browser-based gaming is <em>already</em> responsible for a massive chunk of our MMO gaming. All it takes is one look at the number of players of games like <a href="http://www.runescape.com/"><em>RuneScape</em></a>, <a href="http://www.clubpenguin.com/"><em>Club Penguin</em></a>, <a href="http://travian.us/"><i>Travian</i></a>, <a href="http://www.spacetimestudios.com/">Spacetime Studio</a>'s collection, <a href="http://warofdragons.com/"><em>War of Dragons</em></a>, <a href="http://www.glitch.com/"><em>Glitch</em></a>, <a href="http://www.evonytwo.com/"><em>Evony</em></a> (and its "<a href="http://www.evony.net/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=56&amp;Itemid=49">nearly 30 million customers worldwide</a>"), <em><a href="http://en.grepolis.com/">Grepolis</a></em>, <a href="http://www.bigpoint.com/">Bigpoint's stable</a>, and many, many others to see that the number of us who play MMOs through our browsers is pretty staggering.<br />
<br />
Streaming content is next. <a href="http://tera.enmasse.com/"><em>TERA</em></a> recently invited players to try out the game using a streaming client that is hosted by <a href="http://www.gaikai.com/">Gaikai</a>, a streaming service that was recently bought out by Sony <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/07/02/sony-invests-in-cloud-streaming-with-purchase-of-gaikai/">for a cool $380 million</a>. While it does not yet stream MMOs, <a href="http://www.onlive.com/">OnLive</a> has been adding games to its collection for quite a while, embedding itself into televisions, tablets, and PCs and <a href="http://desktop.onlive.com/">now offering a mobile desktop</a> that gives iPad users access to a virtual PC desktop. I have successfully played many browser-based MMOs through that virtual desktop's browser. <a href="http://www.bigfishgames.com/">Big Fish</a> games, a non-MMO developer that produces "a new game ever day," announced that it too <a href="http://www.bigfishgames.com/blog/sneak-peek-universal-cloud-gaming-service/">will offer a streaming service this summer</a>. I squealed out loud when I heard that one.<br />
<br />
Does this mean streaming content is closer to mainstream than I previously thought?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/07/06/mmobility-developments-in-gaikai-onlive-shine-light-on-streami/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>MMObility: Developments in Gaikai, OnLive shine light on streaming future</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/07/06/mmobility-developments-in-gaikai-onlive-shine-light-on-streami/">MMObility: Developments in Gaikai, OnLive shine light on streaming future</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 06 Jul 2012 12:00:00 EST. The life expectancy of subscriptions -- and the enormous discussion swirling around it -- is at the forefront of Gamebreaker.TV's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/This-Week-In-MMO/">This Week in MMO</a>. Massively's own Rubi Bayer joins the crew as they analyze <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/11/mark-jacobs-ive-never-been-against-f2p/">Mark Jacobs' comments</a> on subscriptions vs. free-to-play. Jacobs' blunt labeling that most F2P games are "crap" is incendiary, although it's hard to deny there are a lot of shoddy titles out there.<br />
<br />
The roundtable goes on to talk about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/05/ccp-games-ceo-issues-letter-of-apology-to-eve-online-players/">CCP's apology to <em>EVE Online</em> players</a> and what's being done to repair faith, trust, and ship-spinning in the game. It seems that frank apologies from higher-ups to customers is en vogue these days, from <a href="http://blog.netflix.com/2011/09/explanation-and-some-reflections.html">Netflix</a> to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/27/square-enix-says-ffxiv-greatly-damaged-final-fantasy-brand/">Square-Enix</a>, although it's debatable how much face is saved from such actions.<br />

As we already know, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Sony/">Sony</a>'s <a href="http://ps.joystiq.com/">PSN</a> servers have been offline for well over two weeks at this point, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Sony-Online-Entertainment/">Sony Online Entertainment</a>'s PC networks followed suit earlier this week <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/04/soe-games-reportedly-down-until-friday-at-the-earliest-class-ac/">due to the same hack</a>. We also know that all <a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> players will be receiving a month's free subscription time plus one additional day for every day the network is down in addition to a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/04/dc-universe-online-players-getting-a-new-mask-as-a-consolation-p/">funky-looking Batman-inspired mask</a>. The topic of the overall network breach is so big that it's crossed from gaming news to mainstream media -- the U.S. government has <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/04/sony-responds-to-congress-with-open-letter-suggests-anonymous/">called Sony on the carpet about the loss of personal data</a>, and Australia is <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/34452/PSN_Attacks_Prompt_New_Australian_Privacy_Laws.php">planning to add new privacy laws due to the breach</a>.<br />
<br />
As a long-time SOE gamer, I understand the frustration, trust me. I am concerned about my personal data being out there, have signed up for credit monitoring, and filed fraud alerts with the three major bureaus just to be safe. Still, rather than devoting yet another post here on Massively to the security breach, I thought it would be better to instead borrow a page from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/karen-bryan">Karen</a>'s great <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/05/the-guild-counsel-dealing-with-the-downtime/">Guild Counsel posting from earlier this week</a> so I can offer up some different DC Comics-related things to do while the game is offline. At least one of the suggestions is both free and time-sensitive, so be sure to join me after the break as soon as you can!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/07/alter-ego-ways-to-get-your-dc-comics-fill-free/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Alter-Ego: Ways to get your DC Comics fill -- free!</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/07/alter-ego-ways-to-get-your-dc-comics-fill-free/">Alter-Ego: Ways to get your DC Comics fill -- free!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 07 May 2011 14:00:00 EST.
