If you've never made the trip to level 40 in <a href="http://champions-online.com"><em>Champions Online</em></a>, the endgame is somewhat of a mystery. I remember prior to getting my first level 40 that people would talk about things like "Nemcon" and "dailies." I found it kind of strange that a level 35 character couldn't sidekick or otherwise experience anything similar to these things. That all changed for me when I journeyed into the UNITY building for the first time.<br />

It was a little confusing -- there were no easy guides telling me where to start NemCon or what the "Qliphothic research" was for. Fortunately, you guys don't have to feel as much like a noob as I did.<br />

One of the common statements made among the newer MMO generation is the idea that a game "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/22/attacking-the-holy-trinity-of-mmos/">abolishes the holy trinity</a>." It's the idea that their game has evolved to the point where labels like "tank," healer," and "damage dealer" aren't as relevant when talking about a character. This idea isn't particularly new -- the first big RPG with mass online support to break this trend was probably <a href="http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/games/d2/"><em>Diablo 2</em></a>, which actually predates most of the mass-market MMORPGs available today.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://champions-online.com"><em>Champions Online</em></a> definitely takes a step in this direction. In fact, it was <a href="http://forums.champions-online.com/showthread.php?t=102883">a suggestion on the forums</a> and the overwhelming player response against the holy trinity that gave me the idea to write this in the first place. <a href="http://massively.com/tag/champions-online"><em>Champions</em></a> is very solo-friendly, and a character can build to be pretty self-sufficient -- one can build for tanking, damage dealing, and self-healing all in the same package. This lends some pretty big weights to the idea that the holy trinity is a thing of the past.<br />
<br />
But <em>Champions Online</em> has a few things in its design that maintain the "Holy Trinity" design concept. <a href="http://www.champions-online.com/"><em>Champions Online</em></a> has a brand new dev blog out from lead GM <a href="http://twitter.com/cryptic_destra">Noel Holmes</a>: "I wanted to take some time to let the community know what we were up to, and what's been keeping us busy for the last few weeks."<br />
<br />
The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/champions-online"><em>Champions Online</em></a> dev team has found plenty to keep themselves busy lately, working out the bugs and updates that are part of rolling out a new game. Things like restoring deleted characters and rolling characters back are no longer just wishful thinking. <br />
<br />
Of course, dealing with the problem of an unresponsive <a href="http://www.champions-online.com/nemesis_confrontation">Nemesis</a> was a big issue on the table. Fixing the issue obviously isn't just a matter of a few keystrokes in such an involved scenario, and Holmes takes some time to explain how they went about taking care of this. <br />
<br />
It's not all bug fixes and putting out fires, though. The dev team has been paying close attention to player feedback in these first few months, using it as a guide to future improvements.<br />

This ain't no ordinary free weekend. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic/">Cryptic</a> is <a href="http://www.champions-online.com/node/594738">offering a full four days worth</a> of free time in <a href="http://www.champions-online.com"><em>Champions Online</em></a> starting Thanksgiving day at 10am PST -- or Thursday, November 26th to the American holiday challenged. The free time will go on until the following Monday and end at precisely 10am PST. The timing isn't too surprising, as returning players will be able to check out the <a href="http://www.champions-online.com/nemesis_confrontation">recent Nemesis Confrontation update</a> that went live just yesterday. <br />
<br />
Hopefully things go much more smoothly than the last time there was a free weekend. Although, we're curious as to who'll be watching the servers on Thursday. We expect a vast majority of people to be lined with food and edging on the precipice of nap time. Maybe Cryptic is employing robots or Canadians to run their servers for a day. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic/">Cryptic</a> has <a href="http://www.champions-online.com/novembercostumes">revealed the free costume pieces</a> in next week's <a href="http://www.champions-online.com/nemesis_confrontation">Nemesis Confrontation update</a>, which come in addition to two unlockable costume sets. Among the new free costume items are some exceptionally sweet capes, although we're sure many players will be filled with glee to see new weapons being added to the costume creator.<br />

While these are only cosmetic costume options, they're important to players who wield specific guns or swords. It may seem like a minor issue to some, but having an outfit that makes sense -- and looks cool at the same time -- is surprisingly important to players who revel in a game like <a href="http://www.champions-online.com"><em>Champions Online</em></a>.<br />

You can also now put guitars on the back of your characters; something that immediately reeks of potential. We have to wonder if guitars are going to be added as visual replacements for sword based powers, enabling us to whack enemies with our musical axes. What's more dangerous than an interdimensional prison in which malevolent creatures of immense power plot the destruction of the entire <a href="http://www.champions-online.com"><em>Champions Online</em></a> world? That same prison being taken over and used as a lair by your hero's Nemesis and the dangerous Shadow Destroyer. After <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/17/bill-roper-talks-about-champions-online-successes-and-failures/">hints</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/17/champions-online-has-a-secret/">the surprise playtest event</a>, the official site has unveiled <a href="http://www.champions-online.com/nemesis_confrontation">a preview of the upcoming Nemesis Confrontation</a>, which looks like an interesting jump forward in the content offered by the game.<br />

Obviously, the Lair in question is the highlight of the update, which features combat against alien gladiators as well as a collection of powerful villains. There are other rewards to be earned as well, however -- ranging from a number of different hero enhancements to costume pieces in the vein of the enemies fought within the lair. If you can't wait to run the lair in order to get the costume pieces (perhaps you have a perfect character concept to start with), <a href="http://www.champions-online.com/nemesis_confrontation">the preview</a> promises that they will also be available in the C-Store. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Champions-Online/">Champions Online</a></em> isn't going to make players wait long for the event, either, as it's launching on the 24th.
